With something you thought you haven’t watched yet and with something you know you’re familiar with it and eventually when you watch it you’d say to yourself, I knew I saw this when I was still young, is still a pleasant thing to say especially if you find out that what you’ve seen is a film worth watching.

John Hughes is a genius. With films such as The Breakfast Club and Pretty In Pink, you wouldn’t wonder that a film like this could still make it a hit despite the boyish persona of the female “lead”. I think there is certain spunk with Hughes style of putting the female specie in the lead, but not so obvious, role. Except maybe for Pretty In Pink where you’ll see Molly Ringwald’s character running on a lead role.

It was also a nice touch for adding the supporting roles with the likes of the guy at the detention or even the supposedly dream girl of the guy protagonist.

I just find it quite refreshing despite the concept being used over and over through the years, which the girl falls for the guy and the guy is just dumb enough to even sense the feeling from the girl. It was just right for the portrayal of a guy being insensitive and we all know that this still is happening even today.

The music is also a factor for the film’s success. The March Violets playing Turn To The Sky quickens the pace of the film or even the upbeat Miss Amanda Jones.

Some were saying that the film was unrealistic. That given a chance that we turn the tables for the lead roles it would still be unrealistic. But given the formula and the generation, we still want to watch something that is light and something that would feel us good.

I mean it wouldn’t harm us if we get a happily ever after ending, don’t we?

Seven former directors of the Central Intelligence Agency urged President Barack Obama in a letter to end an investigation into CIA interrogations of terror suspects conducted during the Bush administration. The directors, who served under Democratic and Republican presidents, said agency officials revealed “fewer than 20 instances” of alleged abuse when Justice Department prosecutors looked into the program four years ago. That probe resulted in the prosecution of one CIA contractor. Attorney General Eric Holder’s decision on Aug. 24 “to reopen the criminal investigation creates an atmosphere of continuous jeopardy for those whose cases the Department of Justice previously declined to prosecute,” they wrote today. Signing the letter were Michael Hayden, Porter Goss, George Tenet, John Deutch, James Woolsey, William Webster and James Schlesinger.

White House spokesman Ben LaBolt said the White House “doesn’t make decisions about investigations” and declined to comment further.

Holder’s appointment of John Durham, an assistant U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to review whether prosecutions should be sought has been criticized by some former CIA officials as demoralizing and distracting to agency employees.

My Response
Cell phones and smartphones are still an infant technology. It wasn’t long ago that cell phones were as big as a brick and offered limited usability. Nowadays, it seems like every person has a cell phone and there are scores of companies producing them.

With the exception of the iPhone, cell phones and smartphones have become parity products. Marketers simply present them as useful tools in today’s world and that’s that. It will be interesting to see if Deutch, an agency that’s done a good job differentiating marketers over the years, will be able to do the same with a relative unknown like HTC. Will they take advantage of a culture that uses cell phones and smartphones more than others?

For instance, African American and Hispanic men dominate cell phone use (cellular-news.com/story/15627.php) but I’ve yet to see a campaign take full advantage of that fact. In many ways, African Americans and Hispanic lead cultural trends. Perhaps Deutch will make an effort with this audience and that effort will result in their consumers leading many other people to HTC.

Ich hab ein Kind in mein Keller versteckt, ein kleines Kind das drei Tage lang geschrien hat, aber jetzt schweigt es endlich. Jedes Tag Koch ich für das Kind, und jedes Tag isst es garnichts. Nein, mein kleiner Gast ist nicht verzogen, bloß ist es besser wenn er nicht isst, sondern nur zu essen möchte. Dieses letzte Tag hat mir das Kind geflüstert, “Bitte, es tut weh, bitte schiebe das Teller nur ein klein bisschien näher zu mir” und ich musste lachen. Wie naiv so ein Kindchen doch sein kann! Und dann habe ich ihn erklärt das es doch alles umsonst gewesen wäre, wenn ich ihn jetzt das Teller vorsetzen wurde. Das kleine Kind hat schon wieder mit dem weinen begonnen, nur ohne tränen jetzt. Wie sinnlos, und doch ist das seine einzige Antwort für mich. Macht nicht. Nur noch neun tage und die Nacht der Killer-Blumen wird meine Rache Himmelswert schießen. In ein paar tagen wird das Kind auch schon schweigen, aber bis dann muss ich noch kochen, damit er niemals aufhört zu wünschen und zu begehren. Sein Hertz, um als Bezahlung würdig zu sein, muss von Lust und Hass und Pein jenseits des Lebens erfüllt sein.

Obama’s DNI reminds Obama that “enhanced interrogation” worked

Barack Obama’s top man in the intelligence community sent the President a memo defending the use of enhanced interrogation techniques, which the White House edited before releasing to the press de-emphasizing that defense.  Dennis Blair, the Director of National Intelligence, pointed out that most of what we know about al-Qaeda came from using those techniques on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Abu Zubaydah, countering leaks last week from the Obama administration that claimed the methods produced no data:

President Obama’s national intelligence director told colleagues in a private memo last week that the harsh interrogation techniques banned by the White House did produce significant information that helped the nation in its struggle with terrorists.

“High value information came from interrogations in which those methods were used and provided a deeper understanding of the al Qa’ida organization that was attacking this country,” Adm. Dennis C. Blair, the intelligence director, wrote in a memo to his staff last Thursday.

Admiral Blair sent his memo on the same day the administration publicly released secret Bush administration legal memos authorizing the use of interrogation methods that the Obama White House has deemed to be illegal torture. Among other things, the Bush administration memos revealed that two captured Qaeda operatives were subjected to a form of near-drowning known as waterboarding a total of 266 times.

The New York Times, which got a copy of the memo, also notices some odd redactions from the version released by the White House:

Admiral Blair’s assessment that the interrogation methods did produce important information was deleted from a condensed version of his memo released to the media last Thursday. Also deleted was a line in which he empathized with his predecessors who originally approved some of the harsh tactics after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

“I like to think I would not have approved those methods in the past,” he wrote, “but I do not fault those who made the decisions at that time, and I will absolutely defend those who carried out the interrogations within the orders they were given.”

In other words, the Obama administration covered up the fact that even their own DNI acknowledges that the interrogations produced actionable and critical information.  When Dick Cheney demanded the release of the rest of the memos relating that information, he wasn’t just going on a fishing expedition.  Cheney filed a request to declassify those memos in March, and the CIA has yet to decide on his request, but we can no longer doubt that records exist showing the success of those interrogations.

Obama has occasionally suggested a truth-and-reconciliation approach to probing the use of torture by the Bush administration, but this establishes that Obama isn’t terribly interested in “truth”.  Withholding the truth that waterboarding produced information that saved hundreds of American lives, perhaps thousands, shows that Obama values public relations more than he does the truth.  He wants to argue that none of this was necessary to secure the nation against terrorist attacks.  In order to make that argument, he redacted Blair’s memo, including his defense of his predecessors, whom Blair acknowledges had to face some tough decisions to uncover plots against America.

Former CIA chiefs Michael Hayden, Porter Goss, George Tenet and John Deutch all called the White House in March warning that release of the so-called “torture memos” would compromise intelligence operations, current and former officials say. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in order to detail internal government discussions.

Even Obama’s OWN CURRENT CIA director pulled back from releasing the memos, said administration needed to consider the possibility that the memos’ release might expose CIA officers to lawsuits on allegations of torture and abuse, and urged more censorship.

Obama now has a proven track record of releasing – in the name of “openness and accountability” – only that information which harms his opposition, while refusing to release and even censoring any mitigating information.

Wow.  The most radically liberal Senator in Congress is breaking his promise to be bipartisan and above the political divide as a “new politician,” which was at the heart of his campaign.  He is turning out to be the most divisive president in modern history.  What can I say?  I’m speechless with shock – that there were enough fools in the country who thought he’d turn out any differently to get this leftwing ideologue elected.

And let’s be clear: the buck stops at Obama.  He’s the one responsible for this partisan witch hunt, this criminalizing of political differences.  If the radical left is driving the agenda, Barack Obama is still the man serving as their tool.

Update, April 27: Porter Goss – CIA director from September 2004 to May 2006, chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence from 1997 to 2004 – described himself as being “slack-jawed” over the Democrats blatantly obvious lies and demagoguery over this issue.

An article from Atlas Shrugs entitled “Obama Crossed the Line” raises the legitimate anger that should result from Obama’s actions:

If Obama commits treason, is it legal? Obama was not brought up in the USA and lacks American DNA. The fact that he was raised in the largest Muslim country in the world and that his mother was a communist and his Kenyan father was no lover of America tells us a lot about where Obama’s sympathies lie. It tells me that for Obama, it’s payback time, and payback is a bitch.

The problem with starting a process of partisan witch hunting is that it won’t stop.  You can hunt conservatives down now, Obama; but just realize that you’ll be the witch next.

La famiglia Berlusconi diventa socia d’affari di Rupert Murdoch in Germania. Fininvest, l’impero finanziario del premier e dei suoi figli, detiene il 3% di Premiere, la pay-tv tedesca di proprietà del magnate australiano dei media (che ne detiene il 25%). Il pacchetto è stato acquistato in numerose tranche nel corso degli ultimi 13 mesi: le intenzioni della holding guidata da Pasquale Cannatelli sono di arrotondare al massimo fino al 5% e di non puntare a entrare nel board dell’emittente. «Mi sembra una operazione finanziaria di Fininvest» ha commentato a caldo il presidente di Mediaset Fedele Confalonieri.
 
La Germania è però un mercato a cui la famiglia Berlusconi ha sempre guardato con interesse; due anni fa Mediaset, controllata di Fininvest, si era fatta avanti per ProSiebenSat 1, la principale emittente tedesca un tempo di proprietà dell’imprenditore televisivo Leo Kirch, messa in vendita dal tycoon americano Haim Saban. Il gruppo televisivo italiano si trovò però di fronte a forti resistenze politiche. E ancor prima, nel 2002-2003, al momento del crack del gruppo bavarese Kirch Media, Mediaset aveva tentato un affondo, ma analogamente l’ipotesi era stata accolta da riserve non secondarie: quelle dell’allora cancelliere Gerhard Schroder.
 
Ora è la stessa Fininvest a muoversi, ma con dimensioni e un peso molto diversi: quello in Premiere, si apprende da fonti vicine alla holding, è un investimento da alcune decine di milioni di euro, mentre ProSiebenSat valeva 30 volte tanto (ai primi del 2007 è stata comprata dai fondi Kkr e Permira per 3 miliardi di euro).
 
Il 2008 non sarà un anno da incorniciare per la holding creata da Silvio Berlusconi circa 30 anni fa e oggi presieduta dalla figlia Marina, perché i tre principali asset (Mediaset, Mondadori e Mediolanum) chiuderanno con risultati inferiori all’anno scorso (e già nei primi sei mesi gli utili della holding sono caduti del 20% a 161 milioni, con ricavi in lieve crescita, +3%). Ma in Fininvest, forti di 900 milioni di liquidità, hanno deciso di non giocare in difesa ma anzi di rilanciare e così da mesi hanno accumulato posizioni nell’emittente televisiva, approfittando poi, nell’ultimo periodo, anche dei crolli di Borsa (Premiere ha bruciato il 70% negli ultimi tre mesi). Con gli ultimi acquisti fatti a metà Novembre, Fininvest ha superato la soglia rilevante per le società quotate in Germania e così è scattata la comunicazione obbligatoria al mercato.
 
Dopo alcuni anni di focus sul mercato interno, tutta la galassia Fininvest ha iniziato a muoversi nel mercato internazionale delle tv: Mediaset nel giro di un anno e mezzo è entrata con forza nel settore dei contenuti, comprando la casa di produzione internazionale Endemol (in tandem con Telecinco) e TaoDue, ha ampliato il suo bacino di broadcasting con l’ingresso nell’americana Caribevision, la principale emittente etnica per i «latinos», e nella pubblicità con la join-venture in Cina con un operatore locale per raccogliere la pubblicità per un nuovo canale spartivo lanciato nel Paese l’anno scorso, un bacino di 400 milioni di telespettatori. Risale alla scorsa primavera, poi, il progetto di sbarco nel mercato emergente del Nord Africa con l’investimentco, a fianco del finanziere franco-tunisino Tarak Ben Ammar, in Nessma Tv, canale satellitare tunisino che trasmette in tutta l’area del Maghreb di cultura araba.
 
Abbastanza logico quindi che, nell’apprendere la notizia, ieri il mercato si sia lasciato suggestionare da scenari strategici di ampio orizzonte: quello tedesco è uno dei mercati principali in Europa e la quota potrebbe aprire possibili intese industriali tra Mediaset e Premiere. Non a caso il titolo dellla società tedesca si è impennando del 32% alla Borsa di Francoforte, salendo a 3,7 euro.
 
C’è di più: Murdoch con Sky Italia è il leader nella pay-tv nel nostro Paese e Mediaset Premium, il pacchetto di canali a pagamento sul digitale terrestre lanciato l’anno scorso è stato visto come un concorrente di Sky. Ora però, alla luce degli interessi in comune, il quadro potrebbe ammorbidirsi.
 
Nel quartier generale di Fininvest però frenano ogni lettura in prospettiva trasversale dell’operazione: fonti di via Paleocapa hanno fatto intendere che l’investimento nella pay-tv tedesca è stato fatto come se fosse una qualsiasi altra azienda e se ci fosse stato un interesse industriale o strategico sarebbe stata Mediaset ad acquistare azioni.
