Another year over… and a new one just begun. Probably the only John Lennon quote you’ll ever get from me.

But alas, 2009 has came and gone and done it’s damage.

I think that sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is take a look over our shoulder, and this time of year is probably the occasion that’s done most often. I’m no exception to that.

In my case, it’s a time when I try to critique my walk with God. My failures, my near misses, and my rare wins. Sadly, all-too-often, the failures are ones repeated from previous years. Proof that we’re never as strong as we think, and even greater proof that when we live for ourselves rather than for God,… we’re destined to fail.

2009 marked some of my greatest moments in regarding my Christian faith… but as is always the case, when the peaks are HIGH, the valleys are LOW.

Not one for New Year’s resolutions, I’m going to make an exception this year. I’m going to strive to become much, much more DISCERNING. Not just of others, or those things around me, but specifically, of myself.

We, as humans, are so often our own worst enemy. Giving over to sin and vice, poor decision and moral weakness… The devil probably spends more time standing back and watching us implode that actually forcing sin upon us.

So, this year, I hope and pray for wisdom, for protection, and for DISCERNMENT.

The Nobel so-called “Peace Prize” awarded to US President Obama is an insult to all us Muslims. Why?

1) Because Obama presides over the continued occupation of a Muslim land, Afghanistan – where his armed forces routinely kill Muslims, every day, day after day, week after bloody week, month after month, year after bloody year.

2) Because Obama continues to support the brutal murderous Zionist occupation of Filistine and continues to support what is now the Amerikan puppet government of Pakistan whose armed forces are now Amerikan mercenaries in all but name and who glory in the killing, torture and imprisonment of Muslims opposed to the kaffir-domination of their land.

3) Because Obama continues to support the puppet administration in another Muslim land – Iraq – which puppet administration there was manufactured by the kuffar after their brutal invasion and their occupation which killed hundreds of thousands of our brothers and sisters.

4) Because the so-called “peace” that this so-called “prize” celebrates is the “peace” that arises when bullies get their own way, by the threat of violence, by murder, by force.

Honolulu, HI. Rush Limbaugh was rushed to the emergency room at HanaLiki-liki Memorial Hospital yesterday complaining of severe chest pain. Coincidentally, the AMABO and his spawn were in Honolulu on vacation from destroying the world. They were spotted on the beach and the AMABO was holding a straw doll that had a huge pin sticking out of it’s chest. Then he threw the doll into the surf, laughed hysterically and screamed “Beck, you’re next.”

Rush’s condition is still unknown at this time. Doctors can find no physical reason for his excruciating stabbing chest pain. Good thing for Rush that the AMABO’s health care package has not been implemented or he would be dead.

Since the AMABO like dolls, hey America, let’s send the AMABO some belated Xmas gifts: Kachina dolls! Buy them here. It is a known fact that Kachinas can hold evil spirits/disease and will pass it on to whomever possesses the doll.

Your life is slowly draining from your veins.  The gunshots you hear are only people downing shots of their favorite booze.  BEWARE of people who say  the end of the world is near.  Their eyes are glistening while they parade around in the room wearing funny hats with streamers which dangle  like fireworks falling from the skies.  They seem so happy in an 80 Proof world, as lights flash, flash and swirl.

The DEVIL is sitting on a chair in Hell, patiently writing out a document that says he needs your support;  Sign here!  All it says is this: “if anything is true, it has already happened.  The life you believe in is nothing, nothing but a fleeting shell.   The odor you will leave is the smell of rotting shells.”

A man walks slowly as the confetti and streamers fall on a woman he barely knows.  He grabs her once, he grabs her twice, then it comes to blows.  She says, “your nothing but an asshole.  All of you claim to be lawyers, doctors, men of God, and priests!

Dark scoundrels unwrapped in the cold. Staggering about with smiles on their faces.  DAMN THE LOUTS!

The bartender screams, “get out! get out!  You Mother F%*kers.”

A black man, as dark as coal, rests his elbows on an old stained bar full of liquids and fluids.  As he turned to see the clock, he said with a sigh, “even the Sun shines on a Dog’s ass.  Damn these assholes, Damn them all!”   And now the singing begins:  A song so old it could gather dust,  sentiment so fake it feels like rust.

Today, I am pleased to be interviewing Chris Bauer. His debut novel, Scars on the Face of God: The Devil’s Bible has drawn attention from the National Writers Association and other media since its publication in November, 2009. He wrote this one with passion, addressing the mysteries of faith and fear, creating a plot that sizzles with suspense and tension. His work has earned 5-star reviews on Amazon asking for more, and he has made finalist for a 2009 Eppie award. So let’s hear what Chris has to say about the marketing process and future work.

BARBARA: I heard Scars on the Face of God: The Devil’s Bible made you a finalist for the 2010 EPIC award. Could you tell the readers a little about SCARS and how the publishing process went for you?

CHRIS: Yes, Scars is a finalist for the aforementioned award (awards were formerly known as “Eppies”) as best eBook horror novel of 2009. Winners will be announced in March 2010 at the EPICon Convention in New Orleans.

The elevator speech: Church caretaker Wump Hozer, 65, survived a knockabout childhood as an orphan and a stint in prison (nickname is from the sound a crowbar makes when it hits a man’s head) with the help of his beloved wife Viola. He’s lost his faith and has given up on one front, the Catholic Church, the Church having ignored the local monsignor’s salacious behavior. On a second front he’s taking matters into his own hands, looking for satisfaction against a tannery that is dumping waste into the local water supply, something Wump is sure has caused his son’s leukemia. What he doesn’t count on is resurrecting a nineteenth century hysteria that leads to confronting what may or may not be the anti-Christ. It’s old-school horror, suspense and mystery set in 1964 in the fictitious town of Three Bridges, PA, just outside Philadelphia.

The novel took three years to complete—think ‘day job’—then over a year to interest a publisher in it. Publisher Drollerie Press is an engine-that-could small press that delivers stories steeped in legend and fairy tale. Inspired by The Devil’s Bible, a thirteenth century religious artifact that according to legend was written in one night with the help of the Devil, the novel was a natural fit for the publisher. Available first as an eBook, Scars was also released as a trade paperback on 12/1/2009.

BARBARA: I read your excerpt and was intrigued, enough to want a print copy when I next visit Doylestown. What motivated the title?

CHRIS: Religious instruction during my formative years included talk of God’s perfect face. Hell, that sounds so sanitized. The grade school nuns and their discipline around having us learn our catechism drilled this and other teachings into our fertile young minds. But common sectarian sense (such a thing?) might say that if the anti-Christ expects to confront the Almighty, it’s only natural he’d want to scar his face up a bit, know what I’m saying? But I honestly can’t remember exactly how/when the title popped into my head. Best guess is it came from one early-morning Dunkin’ Donuts coffee-fueled epiphany or another.

BARBARA: I suspect Scars required a fair amount of research. How did you go about it? 

CHRIS: The novel took shape in three areas. First, I began questioning what I recalled to be an abnormal cluster of impaired children I knew during my northeast Philadelphia childhood. Couple that with having just read Jonathan Harr’s non-fiction A Civil Action which chronicled the alleged effects of dumping carcinogens into the environment by corporations with leather tannery operations in the small town of Woburn, MA. Subsequent research taught me that there was a proliferation of leather tanneries around the Philadelphia region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. (Be advised here that the tannery waste dumping issues and the impact they have on the novel’s Philadelphia setting is strictly fictitious.) When I learned through a writer friend of mine that tanning leather was hastened by the introduction of dog feces into the process, I endowed my protagonist’s childhood with a neighborhood doggie-dung-for-dollars (actually pennies) business.

Second, my social worker wife Terry told me that in the mid to late nineteenth century there weren’t enough U. S. laws to protect children from abuse by their parents. [Alert! Graphic image coming!] Child protection groups cite anecdotally that orphanages were built in some urban environments simply because the local sewer systems couldn’t handle the volume of infant bodies being discarded into them by poor families with too many mouths to feed. Plus, since there weren’t enough laws to stop such barbarism, it wasn’t uncommon for some of the citizenry to resort to invoking local animal rights/abuse statutes and penalties in attempts to stem this and other child mistreatment when it was discovered.

Third, the movie The Devil’s Advocate (Al Pacino, Keanu Reeves) produced an ‘aha’ moment when Pacino’s Satan talks of rewriting history. It made me ask if religious history had ever been recorded from Satan’s viewpoint. A quick internet search produced The Devil’s Bible (aka Codex Gigas aka The Giant Book) mentioned earlier. This legendary tome became a plot anchor.

BARBARA: How did your signings go at Doylestown and Claymont? What are the advantages of working with an independent bookstore?

CHRIS: Had a great time at both. My post-signings Facebook entry: “Sign this, eat that, smile here, no, smile here, is there a real Devil’s Bible, can my eight-year-old read this (no), it cost what?!!, can I get the recipe for the cookies, you look mean in your picture, you’re shorter than I thought, nice poster..” Thanks to all who were able to stop by. I ENJOYED EVERY BIT OF IT. 

Working with the independents is a more personal experience for both the author and the customer. Independent owners are in it more for their love of the literature itself, much as authors are. They’re readers and writers and community organizers and charity-givers and neighbors. And authors love the independents for the same reason actors like to do stage work: it’s more of an up-close and personal venue for serious, dedicated readers to interact with the authors they follow.

BARBARA: What suggestion would you give authors trying to market their first novel?

CHRIS: They need to realize that it won’t sell itself. That there’s a reason why agents and publishers are so damn picky: NOBODY KNOWS YOU. That even those of you with major publishing deals will still end up doing most of the work. That there’s a direct relationship between face time (internet based or other) and reader interest. The standards: you need a website; you need to blog, which I do woefully little of; you need to join Facebook, MySpace, Goodreads, Librarything, Shelfari, any place where readers and writers will friend each other because they, ah, read and/or write. If your book lends itself to identification with a group or a community organization or hometown, exploit the connection. Case in point: writer friend of mine author Marie Lamba (What I Meant…, an excellent YA title from Random House with a bi-ethnic teenage protagonist) does talks for Girl Scout troops. This has produced mucho publicity for her. I’m still looking for this type of plank for my platform. My novel has too much explicit language, violence and fright material for me to consider a marketing venue like the Scouts, however. Even knowing there are some less impressionable Scouts out there who no doubt already read graphic comics, pulp fiction and the like with their Scout-issue penlights at night, I of course can’t market directly to them. But you get the idea; these types of venues are of interest. I am accepting suggestions.

BARBARA: Like me, you’ve had the benefit of The Writers’ Coffeehouse meetings and forum. Have you taken any of Jonathan Maberry’s nine-month writing courses? How has Jonathan and other well-published authors influenced your writing?

CHRIS: My Jonathan Maberry exposure has been limited to the wonderfully interactive Writers’ Coffeehouse meetings plus one very nice gesture Jonathan made to me. A few years back he went out of his way to deliver on the spoils of winning a horror contest, this after the group hosting the contest had closed its doors due to financial issues. FYI my winning entry for this contest was the first chapter of Scars.

One other horror author I’m enamored with is Dean Koontz, this because of his Odd Thomas series and the terrific voice he’s given this twenty-something I-see-dead-people fry-cook protagonist. Great storytelling on Odd’s part. And this character’s first person POV delivery forced Mr. Koontz into more of a minimalistic approach with his prose, keeping the storylines on task and less literary, something I found refreshing.

BARBARA: Where may someone get information on the Devil’s Bible, other than the Library at Sweden?

CHRIS: Plenty of info on the internet. Pictures, background, real and legendary history. When Googling the topic you’ll also find it returned to the country of its origin, the Czech Republic, in early 2008 to be displayed for a short time. And the National Geographic Channel did a documentary on it which they occasionally repeat. I’ve never seen the show since my cable company doesn’t carry the channel and Blockbuster didn’t have it on disk the last time I checked, but I’m on the lookout for it.

BARBARA: Do you have any sequels in the works? 

CHRIS: Pardon the pun, but it’s a long story. The short answer is maybe. I loved doing Wump Hozer’s voice so much that I feel I need to bring him back. My first novel The Rabbit, Stilled, unpublished as so many first novels are, actually begins where Scars left off (yes, this potential sequel in large measure had been written before the original) but with no Wump. And it’s a mainstream novel, not horror. Acknowledging that these are two formidable challenges to overcome in making The Rabbit, Stilled a sequel to Scars, I can only say “We’ll see.”

BARBARA: I notice you have a WIP: Hop Skip Jump. How is that work going for you?

CHRIS: I love the story but the writing’s not moving along as fast as I’d like. It’s a paranormal mystery about reincarnation and what might happen if a person returns to a place and time where she’s needed the most. I’m about midway through the first draft. Haven’t really tried to market it on spec. I’d much rather it be finished so I can deliver on any interest it might generate.

BARBARA: What do you think the future holds for horror / dark fantasy / SF and other genre fiction sales?

CHRIS: The future’s plenty bright for the dark arts for sure. Just look at the popularity of zombies and vampires and wizards. I do have a short story I’m just starting to shop called Zombie Chimps from Mars. Yep, we’re covering a few bases with this one: the walking dead; monkeys (they like to throw their own, ahem, excrement; how cool is that?); and a hint of fantasy/sci-fi. And while these topics are all worked into this 2000-word piece, I feel the story is about something else entirely.

There was a Linkedin post by Richard Palmer titled, “What have you brought from the Marines to Business? Also, what did you take for granted in the Marines that non-Marines in Business just don’t get?”  With this posting , it brought back many ideals and values I learned serving in the United States Marine Corps.  When I mentor my colleagues, I always give examples of a similar situation I encountered during my service. I want to share you what I brought from the Marines into business world.  

First, the Marine Corps values, “Honor, Courage, and Commitment.“  It exemplifies every Marine.  Being a Marine has helped me become a better person, son, worker, student, professional, and American.  Being honorable is to have quality, trust, integrity, and respect.  Having courage is to have the moral and physical strength to overcome many obstacles. Every citizen should always have commitment to excellence.   Marines understand having commitment to the Corps (organization) and his/her brothers (colleagues) around you.  

I live by the mantra, “Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome.”  It is the ability to accomplish tasks in unfamiliar situations.  There will be times in your life where you lack the resources, the ability, or even basic knowledge, but if you apply, “improvise, adapt, and overcome.”  You will have mental strength and fortitude to accomplish any goal.  You will improvise by seeking ways to accomplish your task by thinking out of the box.  You will adapt by being self-reliant and learning as you go along. Finally, when you achieve it yourself or embrace teamwork with your colleagues you accomplished your mission and you overcame what is unfamiliar to you.  

The physical fitness demands of the Marine Corps not only helped improve my health and well-being but, it has kept my mind keep and sharp.  I will never forget the demanding combat conditioning sessions where we will be running around in full combat gear carrying water jugs, ammo cans, or another Marine on your back.  Why do Marines train in such rigorous, stressful, and demanding environment?  It’s simple, you are conditioning and developing the habit to work efficiently under stress.  Why do Marines (and other service members) do physical fitness before the sun rises?  Not because it’s the best time to train, but it’s developing the habit of getting up when you don’t want to get up.  It’s harder to get out of bed in the morning to go for combat conditioning or 10 mile run, when it’s much easier to accomplish that in the afternoon.  The outcome is, Marines develop the ability to accomplish stressful and demanding tasks that is necessary even though the Marine (still a human being) doesn’t want to do so.  

I apply the five paragraph order (SMEAC)  in almost every project I am tasked too.  For those who doesn’t know what the 5 paragraph order here it is: 

Situation – Description
Mission – What needs to get accomplished
Execution – How will you accomplish it
Admin. & Logistics – What equipment, supplies, who will do what.
Command and Signals – the chain of command- who takes ownership of various tasks. 

No matter how small the job your tasked too, the Marines have taught me every little job or as Marines would say sh*t detail contributes to the big picture.  When I got promoted to NCO, I told my Marines, things need to get done not matter how much we may hate to do it.  A dreaded tasks such as field day or digging up sand bags is vital and important to the mission at hand.  My squad leader stated, “one day this sandbag could save a Marine’s life.”  Every sandbag you dig will contribute to vehicle hardening (at the time in OIF 2003 we did not have MRAPs) and provide cover for a Marine.    

  As a Marine, Mission accomplishment is our number one priority, but TROOP WELFARE is very close to second.  Take care your Marines and they will enable you to be successful as their leader.   In business, your people are much greater than an asset.   Human capital management and HR can learn a lot about how Marines boost morale.  It’s the little things that matter most.  NCO’s and officer’s rewards their Marines if the job gets done.  We always had incentives and it can be as something simple such as  beer in the field.  Remember the warriors breakfast, extended libo, certificate of appreciations, and most importantly recognition for the Marines who deserve it most.  Ribbons and medals were never given, they were earned. 

Finally, we often take discipline for granted.  As the Marines in Paris Island sound off, “D-I-S-C-I-P-L-I-N-E- DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE, DISCIPLINE! Sir, Discipline is the instant willing and obedience to all orders, respect for authority, self-reliance, TEAMWORK.”  Having discipline will give you the edge above all others, it takes a physical and mentally strong individual to be successful.  As a private, you are taught learn and listen to those who outrank you.  Being discipline will be rewarding.  Not only, you will be respected by your leaders, but it will carry on with you in all aspects of life.  

In conclusion, I would finally add that a Marine will be valuable to any organization.  I had the opportunity to watch the movie “Avatar,” and there is a line that stood out.  Jake Sully said, “I may be out of the Marines, but the attitude never left me.”  Once a Marine, Always a Marine… never forget that!

15. Horse Feathers – House With No Home [2008]

The soft voice, calm compositions, I love it. His voice, violins and a guitar melting together to one sweet folk song. To me, this album shows the essentials of folk music.It’s a really pure album. It’s simple but nice. It got wonderful melodies. It’s a perfect for a breezy autumn afternoon or a sunny winter day. Favourites: ‘Rude to Rile’, ‘Working Poor’, ‘A Burden’, ‘This Is What’ and ‘Heathen’s Kiss’.

14. Beirut – the Flying Club Cup [2007]

I still find Beirut annoying at moments, especially when he sounds like a drunk sailor. In someway, it’s really adorable too. I’m not always in the mood for this album, but it’s pretty nice. Beirut floats easily between different ‘european’ styles; gypsy, jazz, Balkan, folk, french chansons, classical music to pop. It’s at moments, to me, a bit too much and I wish he would keep it ’easier’ at times. But it’s still a fabulous album anyway. I love ‘Nantes’, it’s one of my favourite songs.

13. A.A. Bondy – When the Devil’s Loose [2009]

Writing about this album, I wonder why the other one is so much lower. This album isn’t so much better than the other. It got the same, wonderful, vibe around it. Though, on this record Bondy uses more diversity in his instruments. We hear a piano, violin, percussion and more electric guitar work. Songs like ‘I Can See the Pines are Dancing’ and ‘When the Devil’s Loose’ are more upbeat and have richer arrangements. A.A. Bondy nails them anyway. Another fabulous record by this man. Bondy quickly became one of my favourite artists this year. Favourite songs: ‘Mightiest of Guns’, ’Oh the Vampyre’ and ‘When the Devil’s Loose’.

12. St. Vincent – Actor [2009]

Annie Clark delivered one of the strongest records this year with her sophomore album ‘Actor’. It got a really ’strange’ vibe around it. It’s sweet and ‘evil’ at the same time. Described various times as ‘A saw cutting through the Disneyforest’ and similar, I can only agree. Annie got a really nice voice that floats above all the instrumental chaos all the time. Instrumental she’s pretty unique, there aren’t much artists like her, or more, who can pull it off like her. It got bumping beats, sweet violins, crazy synthesisers and unusual guitar lines. I love it! Favourite tracks: ‘Laughing with a Mouth of Blood’ and ‘Actor Out of Work’

11. Andrew Bird – Noble Beast/Useless Creatures [2009]

Andrew Bird is one of my heroes, though his latest album didn’t make my top 10. Actually, this album is saved by his instrumental partner ‘Useless Creatures’, which I might listened more to than the ‘Noble Beast’ album itself. Noble Beast is a brilliant piece of music and I enjoy it a lot, but it misses that slight bit of awkwardness. It does have some highlights, but also some songs that I’m not a huge fan of. I love ‘Anonanimal’, it does have that piece of awkward and craziness, and it’s, instrumental, lyrically and vocally, fantastically made. You can find the same vibe on ‘Masterswarm’ and slightly on ‘Not a Robot, but a Ghost’. But songs like ‘Nomenclature’ and ‘Effigy’ don’t really work for me. And another thing I have to comment on here, is that some of the live versions are so much better than the album versions. For example ‘Fitz and the Dizzyspells’ and maybe a bit on ‘Natural Disaster’(but the simplicity works on this one). That makes me believe that this album could have been so much better, which is sad. Luckily, I fell in love with ‘Useless Creatures’, the instrumental half of this record. It is a very interesting album. The humming, the crazy violins, I adore it a lot and it’s my favourite instrumental album. Again bonus points for the great art work. Favourites (of both records): ‘Anonanimal’, ‘Masterswarm’, ‘Nyatiti’ and ’You Woke Me Up!’.

         It may be dangerous to do this with someone else’s work, but as writers it is key to our uncovering greater depths in our own. In time, anyone can become a good writer; but to become a great writer, you must learn to become a great reader of your own work.  

         My making Orson Welles central to a poem about my marriage shows me that I want to “direct” my relationship with women. Not that this is a conscious process. As one writer says: “I try never to think about where a story will go. This is as hard as writing, maybe harder because I want to know what the story will do and how it will end and whether or not I can write it. But I must not know or I will kill the story by controlling it. I work to surrender“

BOB: Part Four ,  THE WRITER AS DEVIL

JOHN:    QUESTION: Are writers visible in mirrors?

         This goes back to the Christian notion that any creature lacking a soul would not produce a reflection in a mirror. But, actually, with a few exceptions (and I think we all know who they are), writers are visible in mirrors, although interestingly enough, they are often quite discomforted by their own reflection.

John returns to the laptop again…almost trance-like.

         In his 1966 movie, Persona, Ingmar Bergman explored the symbiotic relationship that evolves between an actress suffering a breakdown and the nurse in charge of her as the actress recuperates on an isolated, island cottage.      

          As I watch it now, its implications begin to haunt my life.     

         An actress—played by Liv Ullman—freezes up in the middle of a theatrical performance of Electra, thereafter refusing to speak. We aren’t told why. She watches as the nurse, Bibi Andersson, chatters away about her troubled sex life. Then comes the weird moment on the screen in which the two women physically merge into one.

John puts on the woman’s wig.

          Bergman said that making the movie saved his life. Most of its significance, I believe, centers around the photographic combinations of their faces while at the same time in a way transferring personalities between the mental patient and her lonely nurse.

          For a while the two women really seem to become intermingled. Suddenly, through the silence of the other woman, the nurse is able to put herself in that actress’s place and understand the world with its senseless violence through the other woman’s eyes. 

           That sounds much like something a writer would do, doesn’t it?

           I now live in the country with my second wife who one day meets a younger woman, Liviana, who resembles Liv Ullman a little. She is walking to town, a mile and a half away. At first she seems mildly retarded to Talia, my wife, but in reality she has a severe hearing problem. Liviana’s speech is garbled and she consequently says very little. For some reason my wife thinks this is profound.

           What I don’t understand is that when my wife spends time with Liviana, she comes to believe that the silent young woman may have a spirituality she has been searching for in herself. 

          All of her life, ever since my wife was a little girl, she has had a deep and profound love for God. She sees this as about changing consciousness in our lives and unhinging and unlimiting ourselves so that we can be all we can. She believes that ultimately that is the reality of God awakening in human form.”

John shrugs his shoulders. He is oblivious to where Talia is going with her words.

In any case…what I really want is to learn something about Bergman and Persona or, even better, gain some insight into the creative process.

           Bibi Andersson had been Bergman’s mistress, now Liv Ullman was assuming that role. The plot of the movie makes no sense in itself. Movie critics have been arguing over its meaning for nearly 50 years. But as a symbolic representation of Bergman’s evolving relationship with the two women, it is as sharp and clear as a writer’s image in a mirror. What we in the audience are seeing is not the characters played by Bibi and Liv but the artist’s projection of his own feelings onto them.

Somewhat pointedly.

 …Is this just another case of a male projecting his feelings onto females?

          Maybe, but maybe it’s more, and even goes beyond this film. What if a soul must navigate this world of suffering before reaching its ultimate destination? What if a person must embrace pain as intimately as someone would a lover? Meet pain and be annihilated by it? Make pain, illness, sickness and the diseases of humanity their own?

         …To recognize this passage is necessary to the divine process by which all things are born, all things die, and all things are once more made new.

         So for me, Liv, or should I say Liviana, came to represent…

         …One who steps forward, not to console, but to complete the devastation—to destroy all vestiges of false hope. I’m not talking about Liv or Liviana now, I am talking about something beyond them. What I have in mind is a female with fiery eyes, pointed teeth and a sharp, lolling red tongue.

Grabs the sword.

         She carries a sword in one hand which she wields with abandon. She lops off the heads of both angels and demons. She drinks the blood of the vanquished. All things are transformed in her and returned to the earth. They are rendered harmless in her…in time. She is time. She is Kali, destroyer of false hope.

         She is the Hindu figure named for kala, which means “time”?

         She was first born from the forehead of the goddess Durga during a battle in which this, the Great Mother, was called upon by the male gods— Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva—to protect the earth and all its inhabitants from the forces of evil.

        Kali steps forward, not to console, but to complete the devastation that has already started.

        Follow her into the mouth of the wolf. Through its enormous jaw. Past its razor teeth is a tunnel that leads down into darkness.

         She is naked because she is ultimately pure and unashamed. And, she has three eyes in order to see past, present and future in one glance…to pierce through illusions. She is dark because she is not separate from the ultimate void out of which all things are born and into which all things die. Her tongue is extended because she desires blood and the life force of sex

With animation.

          She wears a skirt of severed arms because they are instruments of power. And her hair is untamed, because each hair represents one of her followers, all of whom will run wildly in different directions trying to find their way back to her. We must chop off the head of illusion.  Through art we must know that life and death are one.

John as if he is reading an historic account. 

          In that original battle, Kali had not stopped with slaughtering demons. She continued her rampage, threatening to devour everything on earth. That’s when the gods sent down Shiva himself—the lover to the Divine Mother in her many forms. Shiva laid himself down on the battlefield in Kali’s path. She stepped on him. She felt his power under her feet. She stopped, looked down, smiled. The balance of the primordial Feminine with the primordial Masculine had been restored.

In the beginning God created the heaven and the Earth. And the Earth was without form, and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Devil said, “It doesn’t get any better than this.”

And God said, “Let there be light” and there was light. And God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit,” and God saw that it was good. And the Devil said, “There goes the neighborhood.”

And God said, “Let us make Man in our image, after our likeness, and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air and over the cattle, and over all the Earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the Earth.” And so God created Man in his own image; male and female did He create.

And God looked upon Man and Woman and saw that they were lean and fit.

And the Devil said, “I know how I can get back in this game.”

And God populated the earth with broccoli and cauliflower and spinach, green and yellow vegetables of all kinds, so Man and Woman would live long and healthy lives.

And the Devil created McDonald’s. And McDonald’s brought forth the 79-cent double cheeseburger. And the Devil said to Man: “You want fries with that?” And Man said: “Supersize them.” And Man gained 5 pounds.

And God created the healthful yogurt, that woman might keep her figure that man found so fair. And the Devil brought forth chocolate. And Woman gained 5 pounds.

And God said, “Try my crispy fresh salad.”

And the Devil brought forth Ben and Jerry’s. And Woman gained 10 pounds.

And God said, “I have sent thee heart-healthy vegetables and olive oil with which to cook them.”

And the Devil brought forth chicken-fried steak so big it needed its own platter. And Man gained 10 pounds and his bad cholesterol went through the roof.

And God brought forth running shoes and Man resolved to lose those extra pounds.

And the Devil brought forth cable TV with remote control so Man would not have to toil to change channels between ESPN and ESPN2. And Man gained another 20 pounds.

And God said, “You’re running up the score, Devil.”

And God brought forth the potato, a vegetable naturally low in fat and brimming with nutrition.

And the Devil peeled off the healthful skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep-fat fried them. And the Devil created sour cream dip.

And Man clutched his remote control and ate the potato chips swaddled in cholesterol. And the Devil saw and said, “It is good.” And Man went into cardiac arrest.

And God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery.

And the Devil canceled Man’s health insurance.

Then God showed Woman how to peel the skin off chicken and cook the nourishing whole grain brown rice.

And the Devil created light beer so Man could poison his body with alcohol while feeling righteous because he had to drink twice as much of the now-insipid brew to get the same buzz. And Man gained another ten pounds.

And God created the life-giving tofu.

And Woman ventured forth into the land of Godiva Chocolate and upon returning asked Man: “Do I look fat?”

And the Devil said, “Always tell the truth.” And Man did.

And Woman went out from the presence of man and dwelt in the land of the divorce lawyer, east of the marriage counselor.

And Woman put aside the seeds of the earth and took unto herself comfort food. And God brought forth Weight-watchers. It didn’t help.

And God created exercise machines with easy payments. And man brought forth his Visa at 21 percent. And the exercise machine went to dwell in the closet of Nod, east of the polyester leisure suit.

And in the fullness of time, Woman received the exercise machine from Man in the property settlement. It didn’t help her, either.

I know that in my latest post I wrote that I would not write anything more on the 2012 circus until next year, but I saw this on Bast’s forum this morning and it perfectly illustrates the ethnocentrism and nonsense these people are willing to spread. In the future I will expose more of these people’s ideas (not just Bast himself, but also ideas of people like Acolyte, Wirelessguru, etc.).

Maranatha refers to an article where a Chinese woman has killed an unusual snake. It had a foot emerging from its body. Maranatha goes on and says: “Is has begun…as the creation falls more out of harmony with the Creator…we will notice more rapid mutations. ‘And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the  whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.’ Revelation 12:9. 2012 is the Chinese year of the Dragon, 2012 is supposed to be the return of Quezacoatl, the dragon or flying winged serpent of the Mayans. Satan’s power is in ascendency…”

This person hence equates Quetzalcoatl with Satan. There are some minor mistakes such as that Quetzalcoatl is an Aztec deity (the Maya called it Kukulkan or Ququmatz) and it did not have wings (the deity was feathered, not winged). More problematic is the idea that 2012 is the year when Quetzalcoatl will return. The Aztecs never had the Long Count and 2012 would therefore be of no importance to them. 2027 on the other hand… (watch out for that date, in 2013 we will probably begin to see 2027 forums).

Neither is this an example of mutation. It is an anomaly probably caused by the snake’s morphogenesis (the biological process when the individual snake developed). This process controls the distribution of cells during the embryonic development. Hence, since snakes once evolved from lizards they do share some genetic materials with snakes. During the process of embryonic development something went wrong and a lizard-like leg emerged. It is not the case that we soon will have one-legged snakes everywhere. These religious people always ground their nonsense in anomalies as if that proof there is a god to account for it. Maranatha goes on:

“Who is Quetzacoatl? He is none other than the Fallen Lucifer. Quetzacoatl: “Sometimes he appears as an aged bearded man with fair or black hair, large eyes and a high forehead.” -Quetzacoatl, The Dictionary of Ancient Deities, p. 395, Turner and Coulter. The Feathered Serpent is a symbolism unquestionably for Satan. According to the Dictionary of Ancient Deities, Quetzalcoatl is ‘supreme deity and God of air, clouds and the wind.” This is curious because this is exactly how the Bible describes Satan: “according to the Prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience.” Ephesians 2:2.

OK, look at this Aztec representation of Quetzalcoatl above. Does it appear to be “an aged bearded man with fair or black hair, large eyes and a high forehead”? There is no beard and the eyes are not notably large and neither is the forehead. Why does not the Bible mention a beak-like mask of Satan (Quetzalcoatl wears such a mask to cover his bearded face I assume…)? Queztalcoatl is a complicated deity and comes in many different forms but never as a Biblical Satan. If there are some similarities it does not mean that they are the same but that these deities have emerged from people’s involvement in the world where certain entities and phenomena come along (such as air, clouds and wind). Maranatha continues:

I suggest the bearded-white man that appeared to the indigenous Indians in Central America was Satan just as he has appeared according to many in the ancient pagan mysteries proclaiming himself to be a god. The motif of Quetzalcoatl follows that of every other fertility, pagan sun-god that came before him. He is a Psychopomp like Osiris. He is lord of the Underworld as is Pluto. He is intoxicated like Bacchus and has illicit sex with a witch. Quetzacoatl’s heart is in the Sun like the Egyptian Thoth. He is the Sun god like Apollo. He has the broad forehead, and huge eyes indicative of every alien encounter ever reported. He is the patron god of gold and metal as is Hermes, and like Hermes and Mercury, he is the messenger of the gods. The word Angel is translated from the word Angellos which means “Messenger.” Now who was the messenger of God, other than he who once covered the throne of the Most High God- Lucifer? Ezekiel 28. […] Lucifer name means “the light bearer” as does the title “Venus” the Sun of the Morning, the androgynous being who, as Hermes, was revered as the bearer of knowledge to mankind. What knowledge? “The knowledge of good and evil” or higher enlightenment is referred to here which the winged- serpent introduced to man in the Garden of Eden. The curse of God on the serpent was the lost of wings and feet, “Upon thy belly shall thy go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.” Genesis 3:14, 15

Here we encounter yet another mish mash of deities from different areas and period subsumed under the master-signifying Lucifer/Satan/Devil/God/Bible. Quetzalcoatl is related to Osiris and Thoth from ancient Egypt, Apollo, Hermes and Mercury from Greek mythology and of course Lucifer from the Bible. Only if you have a hopelessly generalized and reductive view of religions can you boil all these different traditions to be the expression of a master-signifier. Everything is traced back to the Bible. This is ethnocentrism at the core. Maranatha continues:

What am I saying? Satan’s power is building toward the climax of 2012 when he will make himself known for the 1000 year rule envisioned by Satanist- 2012: The Transit of Venus across the Sun, the Chinese year of the Dragon, the return of UFO’s, the return of a being appearing in the Earth as Christ, the appearance of the Maitreya, the Return of the Feathered-serpent Quetzalcoatl, global enlightenment movement where everybody suddenly realizes they are a god […]. The veil between the physical world and the spiritual world of demons and angels will be torn. Perhaps we should connect the dots…”

Alright, here we find further connections to Chinese dragons (mentioned in the beginning), Maitreya Buddha, UFOs, etc. Apparently, there is a global enlightenment movement that will make us all realize we are all gods. I love the last sentence. The problem is only that Maranatha already has connected the dots back to a personally chosen master-signifier. The Bible teaches us nothing of how Quetzalcoatl was worshipped. Once again we have an example of how the 2012circus just is a Christian apocalyptic creation that has nothing to do with either the Maya or the Aztecs.
