While 2009 saw some positivity with many urban artists breaking through into the charts, it also saw

While 2009 saw some positivity with many urban artists breaking through into the charts, it also saw the negative with many artists being blackballed, Giggs prevailed and recently signed a contract with XL recordings, so there is hope and nobody deserves some mainstream recognition than of the elite emcees in the Grime scene..Ghetts.

Here is the new video for Skadoosh ft. Maxsta & Dolla Da Dustman:

As a fan of Ghetts, you beleive in his talent and you cannot help but to expect nothing but the best, so at first instance this track deceives those expectations, however this strangely allows you to focus more on Ghetts and his flow really provides the track with much needed depth, Ghetts reaches out to up and coming emcee Maxsta (also from East London) as well as long time collaborator and friend Dolla, both features deliver, Maxsta (who is one of the artists I tipped last year after hearing one of his sets) has progressed well since, now working with some of the best in the scene, this track is an obvious example of his development thus far, with Dolla stepping up to lay down his opinions to those who feel he has fallen off. The video is a light hearted portrayal of the artists within a dark themed set, featuring a host of cameos including appearances from Mz Bratt, Devlin and Griminal, the video is directed by Digital Dan, who uses his abilities to capture the right vibe and offer the track a matching visual.

Skadoosh is taken from the forthcoming mixtape ‘Calm Before The Storm’, which will then set you up for the new album, ‘Rebel With A Cause’, so look out for more from Ghetts (aka Ghetto) as he looks set to start the year off his way.

Without trying to sound like rebore Wu Tang, Wiley has fathered many lyrical and musical styles. How

Without trying to sound like rebore Wu Tang, Wiley has fathered many lyrical and musical styles. However, his recent commercial successes, whilst broadening his rapping vocabulary (or narrowing it, depending on how you look at it), have caused a bit of a dry spell on the production front.

But now, it looks like he’s back to his button-bashing best. Over the past couple of months, a few Wiley productions have surfaced that have really caught my attention. Showcasing frenetic drum patterns, little or no melody and sharp interjections of vocal snippets, they contain a hint of the old school, whilst also being totally current and banging.

They are:

Wiley feat. The England 10 – She Likes To

The drums on this kill it. With two kicks battling against skittish hihats and percussive ‘Yelps!’ this is sure to smash it in the clubs. It’s big, brash and dramatic.

Wiley & Shifty vs. Ghetts & Devlin – 1,2,3, GO

This is oestensibly a rap battle track, fully updated and pumped full of adreniline for 2009. The drums are similar to She Likes To but the repeated ‘1,2,3′ refrain adds a nice lead into each verse.

The third example is Fumin’s ‘Out Of The Game’ featuring Wiley, Ice Kid, Jookie Mundo and Diesle, but I couldn’t find a video for it Sick new style for the Godfather, proving there’s plenty of life in him yet.

If i understand things correctly, General Tank has started a production team, consisting of himself T-Dot and Ic3, calling themselves Heavytrackerz. Ive never actually heard of them except for General Tanks “General Conquest” beat, on Dollar Da Dustman Return of the Jedi Mixtape, and the remix on Revolvers “Grimes Son”. That was great though and now Heavytrackerz has given us, as a free download 1 cd of instrumentals and 1 with features. And those features alone makes this a must have. Try and take it in; Rage, Lexxman, Chipmunk, Cookie, Black the ripper, Dan, Prez T, Bossman, Jammin, Tempa T, Earz, Random Impulse, Rinse, Revolver, Deeperman, Devlin, Dollar Da Dustman, and loads of other, less known names. I count 42, all in all.

Of course this means that downloading is a must, but it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a good download. In theory i love this kind of mixtape, countless mc’s, countless verses from constantly hard barring mc’s on constantly hard grime beats. Back when i was15-16 and could afford 2 cd’s a month i would have learned every verse from this. Now times have changed though, every day i have new mixes, new sets and new tunes i feel i have to listen to. I can’t give a cd the same time i could when i was younger, unless it’s very very good. Unfortunately this isn’t that good. Not bad by any means, but it’s not the cd I’m gonna be playing again and again. The problem is not the features, which have their ups and down, but that the beats of General Tank (whose made all but two if i understand things correctly) at times aren’t really that banging and get a bit monotonous. Sure there are few grime releases these days i can play without skipping tracks, but they usually have a variety of producers that keep things from getting boring. On this the features are supposed to that work, but they aren’t enough “General conquest” is obviously hes’ biggest beat, and it is also featured three times. Still there are a few tracks that really stand out; ”You ain’t gully” with Dan, Bossman, Prez T and Jammin is a big beat and a great tune, “Action man” with Rage and Lex is banging and “Worse come to worse” with Lex lets the Lexxman shine.

Although i don’t think i’m gonna be listening to this all the way through more than a few times more, theres really no proper excuse for not downloading. It’s a free release, it has some of your favourite mc’s on it. I’m guessing you’ll find a few tracks you’ll really like, or perhaps i’m wrong and you will like all of it. Anyway, click the links:

Moving things forward with a local chapter of Steve Aoki’s notorious Dim Mak parties – on the fly presents Pase Rock, as first cab off the rank, Friday 16 October at OAF. As Spank Rock’s right-hand man, Brooklyn producer/DJ/rapper Pase Rock needed little introduction. Now as an integral part of Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, roster and Hollywood party posse, Pase is shakin’ and bakin’ in the US hipster scene and playing shows non-stop all around the world while still finding time to produce his own brand of slap-happy, potty-mouthed party music.

As a celebrity DJ of choice, Pase Rock has DJ’ed private parties for Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake, Playboy and Lindsay Lohan. As a producer he is published on over 20 different labels as Five Deez, a member of Spank Rock and Fully Fitted (with (XXXchange and Tyler Pope from !!!) and under the Pase Rock moniker with releases such as his 2003 album Bullsh!t as Usual, the 2007 blow-up ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge‘… Put your paaaanties on, put that pussy away, Pase is on his way! Support from Dangerous Dan, Mik Menace, Cassette and that foppish dilettante Tha Fizz.

New York based artist PASE ROCK is a renaissance man in demand. Since teaching himself how to scratch on his Grandmothers direct drive turntable at 9 years old, Pase has been utterly fascinated with the infinite rotation of the vinyl platter. He started his DJ career in the early to mid nineties playing house parties with friends around Ohio and Atlanta spinning club-ready Hip Hop, House, Old Soul and R&B, Rock and whatever gets the people moving.Pase is a celebrity DJ of choice, having DJ’d private parties for Snoop Dogg, The Black Eyed Peas, Justin Timberlake, Playboy, Lindsay Lohan, Larry Flynt and Hustler Enterprises, Adidas, Diesel Jeans, Urb magazine, Vibe magazine and scores more. He has toured around the world as both a DJ and MC with the hip hop groups Five Deez and Spankrock since 2001 visiting Japan, France, UK, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Austria, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, The United States, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the Czech Republic. Recently hes also been seen collaborating with Prefuse 73 , Diplo, Tortoise, Japanese superproducer Nujabes, XXXChange and more. After numerous twelve inch releases on over 20 different record labels he released his first solo album, Bullshit as Usual, exclusively in Japan on Dimid Recordings in 2003.It was met with both critical and commercial success. Five Deez has released three international studio albums, 2001’s Koolmotor on Counterflow Recordings , 2003’s Kinkynasti, and 2006s Kommunicator on Rapster/ K7 records. His most recent 12 Lindsay Lohans Revenge has been causing a frenzy in clubland since it was leaked on the internet right before the New Year in 2006.It can regularly be heard in regular rotation of the DJ sets of DJs like DJ AM , Steve Aoki, Stretch Armstrong, Mark Ronson and even Lindsay Lohan herself! Maybe its the infectious hook about celebutantes penchant for showing their nether regions, Put your paaaanties on, put that pu**y away! Pase also likes to play a lot of golf.

What is a DJ if he can’t scratch? What is a MC if he can’t rap? What is a beat without a live clap? Well I can do it all baby, just like that! Trading off Egyptian Lover’s classic rap, Pase Rock has built a career as an exponent of the four elements of hip hop. As an MC and producer he is published on over twenty labels worldwide, as a DJ he plays non-stop all around the world and is in tight with both the Hollywood hipster scene and NY Mafioso, as a dancer he’s a natural (check the youtube on the Fuzzy boat cruise a few years back) – and you need only ask the management at Kings Cross club Melt if he writes graffiti (sorry, Walter). But Pase Rock is not just about doing these things, but rather progressing them, building a career and having a good time doing it under KRS-One’s mantra, that “the essence of hip hop is in transformation”!For starters, Pase Rock’s work with the Spank Rock fraternity released the global dance scene from its impoverished electro-house infatuation in the mid-2000s; his work with rap group Five Deez speaks to the old school but moves beat production to the next level; his Fully Fitted project with XXXchange, Devlin and Darko and Tyler Pope from !!! breathed new life into an old suite of samples and helped resuscitate belief in the ‘club’ sound last year; while his own brand of slap-happy, potty-mouthed party music continues this legacy with original collaborations alongside today’s stars – Santogold and Amanda Blank. And we don’t stop! His debut artist album, Bullsh!t as Usual, has since been complemented by last year’s blow-up, ‘Lindsay Lohan’s Revenge’, and two new cuts on Steve Aoki’s Dim Mak label, ‘Get Money Kids’ and ‘So Fuckin Disco’. “I’ll be releasing a new 12”, ‘Nights’, on Dim Mak next month, then an album Spring time [in the US] next year,” he tells me, but is reticent to say where. “I don’t know what label that will be on; I can’t commit to an answer there.”That said, there’s no denying he’s in tight with Dim Mak and the rest of the West Coast party massive, “I decided to move out here, to LA, a few months back. I was working out here a lot, there was the Dim Mak connection and you might say I wanted a change of pace, hehe… there’s a bit more action here anyway, New York has been a bit quiet lately and is especially susceptible to bad weather – people refuse to go out in the cold.”But of course you can’t discuss the West Coast Party scene without discussing DJ AM, America’s #1 DJ who was found dead in his NY apartment last month. “We’re all just trying to deal with it still,” he sighs, “AM was such an important part of nightlife here, I mean it’s surreal to think that I’ll never get to see him DJ again or hang out with him; he was such a permanent fixture in everybody’s life. What’s worse is I just found out the MTV series that he made just before his death will screen next week.”There’s a real sense of sadness with Pase personally and from what I can gather across the whole scene in LA. With this he tells me how keen he is to “get out” for a bit and head down to Australia. The show must go on, with this trip dovetailing with a recent three-month tour that took in South America, North America and North and South East Asia. It will be his fifth trip to Oz, having travelled here thrice before with Spank Rock to play Big Day Out and the Sydney Festival. I have grand memories of these previous trips when I have had the pleasure to DJ and hang out with Pase and all the Spank Rock guys. On the last trip in particular, the chemistry between the two MCs, Pase Rock and Spank Rock, was electric – they were on fire, a soulful rap attack that peaked with a cover of Jimmy Bo Horne’s ‘Spank’ that nodded to Michael Jackson circa ‘Smooth Criminal’.

Around that time though Spank Rock himself, Naeem Juwan, made a decision that ‘Spank Rock’ was now a one man band – an MC with producers and collaborators, rather than a band or collective. It was a move that surprised me at the time, but one that doesn’t seem to have adversely impacted on the dynamics between the wider group or Spank and Pase, the MCs, themselves.

“I’m down with those guys til the day I die,” he tells me in reference to the Spank Rock troupe. “ I mean XXXchange has produced half my album, Chris, Ron, Alex and I still have the Fully Fitted label, Naeem, Santogold and Amanda are all on my upcoming record. That’s just the way it is.”

It’s comforting to hear and at this juncture I recall a conversation I had with Naeem when we discussed his persistent and evolving schedule of collaborations (within Spank Rock and beyond with the likes of Bjork, Coldcut, Teki Latex and Lady Sovereign). “There’s a bunch of people out there that like what I do, likewise there’s people making awesome jamms that I’m into,” he told me. “We’re all members of the indie music scene or fraternity or whatever you want call it.”

Pase Rock clearly holds the same view – an all singing, all dancing party machine who is about music and moving it forward: Put your paaaanties on, put that pussy away. Pase is on his way!

Marco Belinelli: From zero to hero (I hope, at least) I apologize, Raptors. For all the time I spent

Marco Belinelli: From zero to hero (I hope, at least)

I apologize, Raptors. For all the time I spent hyping the preseason opener, I was too hooked on the Twins-Tigers to catch much of it. I did, however, see most of the first half, and here’s what I took note of:

- Reggie Evans is a beast, and would likely win if he ran for mayor of London, Ontario. Luckily for the Sixers, he didn’t get hold of anyone’s scrotum. Wonder if Chris Kaman has recovered from that yet…

- DeMar DeRozan actually reminds me more of a young T-Mac than Vince Carter, both because of his frame and his game. McGrady was much rawer and wirey as a rookie than Vince, like DeRozan now. That, of course, had to do with T-Mac coming out of high school and Carter spending four years at North Carolina. Check out baby McGrady here. (Also, have a look at this, which I found while looking for a picture of T-Mac as a rookie. I love it.)

- Question: Is Sonny Weems a long-lost Graham triplet? The dude looks exactly like former-Raptor Joey and his twin Stephen. He even plays a game similar to Joey, at least from what I’ve seen so far…

- Lastly, a Sixer note: Why is Jason Kapono wearing number 72? Matt Devlin said Marco Belinelli chose to wear 0 for Toronto because he felt he didn’t get a chance in Golden State and is starting over. Is Kapono wearing 72 because he had that many chances in Toronto and blew it? Anyway, I can’t stand it when NBA players wear tacky numbers like that.

Toronto, by the way, lost 107-98 to Philly tonight. The teams meet again tomorrow night at the ACC.

I’ve had this one a while now on CDQ and hadn’t seen too many people bumping it so thought i’d be kind as i am an share with you. In my opinion Kano’s second verse is retarded while Dev’s is average. Chipmunk holds it down and i think he’s going in at Kano with some bars there…

Umbrella Productions presents Blood Feast at View Night Club in Cleveland, Ohio on Halloween, October 31st, 2009. This should be an interesting party, as are all parties thrown by Umbrella Productions. This event will be hosted by Kat the Midget Entertainer and have lots of bloody, ghoulish contests, performances, and prizes. This was a half page flyer, done in a quantity of 5000. There was also a poster and web banner designed, however they are very similar to the flyer and I don’t feel the need to post.

Chapter 1 – BAD NIGHT AT BITTER LAKE

I WAS TRAPPED at the top of a roller coaster with a yellow-eyed witch and a drunken maniac was taking potshots at us from the Playland midway below.

Call me crazy.

Shivering eighty-five feet in the air in my slippery, size-12 Florsheims on a coaster rail while gravity, high wind and hard rain tag-teamed with two idiots who wanted me dead was a better gig than another night swimming in grief and Bushmills Irish.

Except for the dying part. There’s nothing like imminent death to shock you into thinking that maybe you’ve been taking this breathing gig for granted.

****

Just two hours before, I’d been shuffling out of the Paramount Theatre on 9th and Pine and into the chilly November air, after two lonely showings of The Awful Truth.

It was exactly the kind of screwball comedy that my ex-wife Sophie had loved. Sophie was mad for Cary Grant and in the days before her death, madly in love with me, once again.

I stretched and sampled the amber inside the flask my best pal Godfrey Daniels had given me. I lit up a Lucky and pointed myself westward toward the Rosie, my nickname for the Roosevelt Hotel at 7th and Pine. I stopped at the light, exhaled, and my sore eyes laid hold of Miss Fortuna Soriano alongside me.

“Murder!”

She was beautiful.

I must’ve said it out loud, because she smiled and in Italian said: “Com’è?”

We feasted on warm champagne and cold roast beef in the Rosie’s kitchen. A bottle and a half later, guiding Fortuna Soriano upstairs to sweat under satin sheets seemed the only logical option.

Then she mentioned a dipper and a coaster.

It took awhile, but I finally figured out that Fortuna was talking about the Giant Dipper, the pride of Playland Amusement Park on the south shore of Bitter Lake.

She was requesting a coaster ride on a November night unusually cold even by Seattle standards, and I was drunk enough to say: “Why not?”

With Franco Devlin, a lady could always get what she wanted, until she wasn’t wanted anymore.

Thirty minutes later we were stuck at the Dipper’s highest point above the midway. Our high speed November night’s ride was over.

I was a bit uneasy about the stalling, but Fortuna seemed ecstatic, as if she was in love with the night and the coaster and enchanted by the shy moon, which kept peeking at us from between the clouds and then hiding in them.

She gesticulated wildly, her hands everywhere as she spoke incessantly in Italian and broken English. Her accent was like aural velvet, musical, passionate, and while I didn’t catch every nuance, I understood her red lips and full figure perfectly.

“That sweet man…Signore Eli…velli? I kiss him for stopping the coaster-roller so, um, so close to the sky!”

“Who? Oh, Elavari, I paid him to stop the… coaster-roller right here, where we’re closest to the moon, how you say it, la luna?”

She giggled. “You pay?”

“Absolutely,” I said.

My old friend, night watchman Henry Elavari would have agreed to the private ride even if I hadn’t slipped a few bucks in his shirt pocket. He knew my mother, Querida Devlin. Henry’s like family.

I’d paid only for the ride, not the stall, but I didn’t want Fortuna to know that.

****

The November wind was kicking up a bit and I watched as the first droplet of rain hit just under her right eye and roll down her cheek like a tear. I caressed that check and it warmed to my touch.

“Are you scared?”

“Che?”

“Afraid. Are you afraid?”

She giggled.

“Of you, Franco Devlin?”

From her lips, Devlin sounded like Devil-Inn.

” No, no, Devil-Inn. I fear no thing. I am, how you say, less fear.”

“Me too, Fortuna. I fear no man or no thing.”

She kissed me back, and said:

“Maybe you speak too soon, eh?”

***

FORTUNA LAUGHED and then I laughed and then we laughed, and then I stopped laughing and she didn’t. I opened a flask and took a long drink of amber. By the time I’d finished she was still laughing.

“I have a-something … for you…”

She reached down for something on the floor, offering a pleasant hint of cleavage as she bent forward.

She bent down further, then looked up from between my legs.

I grinned.

She grinned mischievously. Then I could have sworn that I saw her eyes flash from chocolate brown to yellow and back to brown.

Suddenly the lights on the coaster and the few lights on the Midway faded out and then lit up again.

“WHAT THE–”

My “gift” turned out to be a stiletto knife! Its long, deadly blade jumped out of its black handle before I knew what it was, and Fortuna intended to filet me with it.

The lady launched her midnight attack faster than Johnny Weissmuller wrestling a crocodile in Tarzan and His Mate.

I jumped out of the car, which was exactly the wrong thing to do, and slid along the coaster rail in precisely the wrong direction, too far away from the car to take hold of even the edge of it. I stood briefly on the rail, vainly attempting to balance myself when a sudden gust of wind talked me out of it. I quickly genuflected.

The disdainful sky spat rain at me, the spittle multiplied into an angry rain storm, unusually hard, even for Rain City. Each drop the wind blew into my face felt like a well-aimed needle.

And Fortuna was lunging after me, her insults and her dagger stabbing wildly at me.

****

I’M STILL YOUNG, 27, strong. When the quarter century mark hit me like a sucker punch to a glass chin, I recouped by increasing my workouts at Padre Al’s Gym.

Then last Summer, when the car crash killed my Sophie and left my body feeling like a North Coast Limited train wreck, I had to sweat like a madman in the gym to regain my strength. The Padre says I’ve made great progress. I’m a strong guy, tough, tall and heavy with muscles, but let’s face the music: this chassis ain’t exactly built for slip-slide gymnastics high above the Midway in high wind and bitter rain!

Fortuna, on the other hand was younger, smaller, and apparently, a gymnast. She moved easily from the coaster car onto the rail, defying wind, rain and apparently, gravity, as she stabbed at me again, and again, spitting epithets at me in English, Italian and Spanish between knife thrusts, as I twisted left and right in the wind. I was a busy guy just then, dodging a knife, startled by every bullet that hit the railing, and trying to keep from falling.

I scrambled away from her, but made it just far enough away to notice that the track was about to take a decidedly precipitous drop.

She threw the knife toward me and I barely dodged it. I heard it ding against the metal of a lower rail before it fell to terra firma. She cursed even louder than before. It was hard to tell because of the near-darkness but she seemed to be scrambling back toward the coaster car. I couldn’t help musing that either our fearless Fortuna wasn’t so fearless after all, or that she had another weapon in the car, if not a shiv, then maybe a bolt of lightning.

I irrationally prayed that before her first shiv hit the Midway, it would pierce the skull of the twit with the rifle. Then I thought about Henry, and hoped that he’d forgotten us and stumble-bummed his way back to his hiding place.

If Fortuna’s shiv or one of Stroheim’s stray bullets found Henry, he’d leave a widow with six hungry children as well a few spinsters and widows he visited on the sly. Henry is quite a character.

Fortuna had lost her stiletto and I wasn’t dead. Fortuna was not happy. In the wink of an eye the beauty had turned from a warm Italian maiden into one of those murderous Spanish vixen right out of the Sephardi stories my mother used to tell my brother Danny and me. In Spanish, she screamed at me through the howling wind:

“I SHOULD HAVE CUT OFF YOUR TESTÍCULOS WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE!”

“DOES THIS MEAN THAT THE WEDDING IS OFF?”

****
FOLKS SAY THAT Bitter Lake gets its name from its water. For decades an old sawmill that used to stand nearby had dumped logs into the lake. The logs had emitted tannic acid, giving the water a foul taste, but if the water had tickled my palette like champagne, my memories of the lake and the town surrounding it were reason enough to name it “bitter.”

She pretends to be her own city, but Bitter Lake is really a part of northwest Seattle. There is no discernible transition between the two towns. You’re driving your 1936 Ford Roadster on Aurora Avenue in a more or less northerly direction and you’re in Seattle one second and in the next you’re in Bitter Lake. It’s all the same.

As a lad I had a lot of girls from Bitter Lake, but none as pretty as Sophie Madison. We met in January, 1931. I was doing double duty at a dance marathon at the Playland Ballroom, attacking my saxophone with the dance band when I wasn’t on the floor with the Husky Hooligans, a dance relay team comprised of my pals from the University of Washington. Sophie had a delightful wiggle and a smoky voice twice as intoxicating as the bootleg booze we were drinking. Our team came in a distant third, but we didn’t care. We were thrilled not to be dancing anymore and delighted with each other. In a heated fit of drunken confusion, Sophie and I had drafted the Bitter Lake Justice of the Peace into blessing our dirty weekend.

Sixteen months later, on a cool summer’s evening, I was rowing and Sophie was looking back at me through the saddest shutters I’d ever seen. The Seattle sun was sinking into Bitter Lake, and our marriage was going down with it.

Sophie told me that I treated women the way I boxed in the gym. She said that I was all charm and flashy foot work in round one and scored a few hard and sweaty hits in the clenches, but by round two I was out of one ring and into another.

I didn’t argue. She was mostly right.

She tossed her wedding band into the water. It was an expensive baptism. I baptized mine there too, and as I rowed the boat to shore there were no more words between us. No more verbal sparring matches, no more battles of wits, no more jealous fits, no more hits. Not that I ever hit Sophie, but her little fists had stung my chest and face a well-deserved time or two.

I don’t hit women. I inspire them.

Fortuna Soriano, for example, was inspired to creative violence. She was more than willing to gut me like a salmon and happily watch as my innards followed my carcass down to the main drag. She leaned forward from the rail, bending so far downward that I was sure she was going to fall. I couldn’t figure out whether she was defying or collaborating with the phony Jerry on the midway.

SHOOT HIM! SHOOT ME! SHOOT SOMEBODY, YOU FOOL!”

“HE CAN’T HEAR YOU! WE’RE UP TOO HIGH, FORTUNA, AND IT’S TOO RAINY AND WINDY!”

“YOU KILLED MY SISTER!”

Maybe it was the booze, but I couldn’t help laughing. In my jaded past I’d earnestly offered that weak excuse a time or two.

“I DIDN’T KNOW YOU HAD A SISTER!”

This time, finally, it was true. I didn’t know her sister, and if her sister had Fortuna’s disposition, I didn’t want to know her sister. Then again, if she was built like Fortuna, I might.

“Did you laugh, IRISH BASTARD, when you killed her?”

I growled. I considered myself legitimately Irish.

“YOU SHOULD HAVE STABBED THAT SHIV IN MY FEMORAL WHILE YOU HAD THE CHANCE.”

“CHĖ?”

I started sliding and slipping in her general direction.

“YOU’D BETTER HAVE ANOTHER KNIFE, YOU YELLOW-EYED LA BRUJA! , BECAUSE I’M–”

I lost my grip momentarily and my heart was beating in my throat, I forced my arm upward and around the bar.

“–COMING–”

It took nearly all the strength I had left to drag my carcass upward and back onto the rail.

“–AFTER YOU!”

She scrambled back to her coaster car.

Far below us, the baritone with the slurred speech and the exaggerated accent announced his intentions to us. We could barely hear him. We were high above the midway, in the wind and rain, but his voice was amplified as if he was using a megaphone.

“YOU VILL DIE NOW…YAH, YOU VILL DIE!”

Whether he was talking to me or to Fortuna, I didn’t know, but I was presently delighted that the aspiring Erich Von Stroheim’s aim was as awful as his accent. I was thinking it was a good thing that we were so high in the air, and that the wind and rain and the semi-darkness, despite their siding with my enemies, had at least managed to provide me with some protection.

Then, sometime after Fortuna’s attack and at least a dozen of Stroheim’s misspent bullets, I decided that Stroheim would have needed a lucky shot to nail us if we were five feet away. An armless, legless alcoholic with astigmatism in his right eye and a cats-eye marble in his left socket would have had better aim than this jerk.

I was slipping and sliding toward the coaster car, nearly falling twice, but couldn’t shake my desire.

What does it say about me that I was still hoping to nuzzle Fortuna Soriano between satin sheets at the Rosie?

What had my womanizing ever gained for me? Brief. intense pleasures, and blissful, temporary anonymity, to be sure, but also divorce and indirectly, the killing of my sweet Sophie. Not much else, unless you count a knife wound, a gun shot wound, a recent head injury, and over the years, the loss of a gunboat load of dough.

Yet there I was, angling on the slippery edge of a coaster rail, jumping out of my argyles with fright, and still, I was more than willing to help Fortuna escape from her clothing.

I was interested and afraid and irritated as hell that I was still interested and so afraid.

After all, I have a reputation for being an Irish tough guy, despite Hershey chocolate hair and eyes bequeathed by my Spanish mother. My face resembles my Da’s baby face more than my mothers, but I’m tough enough. Jesuit priests at St. John’s had taught me how to box, but the streets of Seattle had taught me how to fight.

I’m six four and two hundred pounds soaking wet. I’ve won more fights than I’ve lost, but the roughest bum this side of Idaho would shudder if his date’s eyes changed color and she suddenly turned from being a willing woman into a murderous wretch.

That kind of stuff isn’t supposed to happen until AFTER the honeymoon.

My right hand felt like it was filled with lead as I grabbed the edge of the coaster car. I could barely make out the image, but Fortuna seemed to be cowering on the floor, mumbling something in Italian, her palms pressed together and pointed upward. Whether she was praying to the Blessed Virgin or to the devil I couldn’t say. It was disconcerting to see my would-be assailant praying at all.

I might have scratched my my rain-soaked head in bewilderment, but I needed both hands to pull the rest of me up, over and into the coaster car to overtake Fortuna.

The girl radiated so much heat that I was sure I could have warmed my ice cold hands over her. Instead I knelt before her.

Even in the midst of angry rain and wind, I couldn’t keep from grinning. Fortuna Soriano, the beautiful and insane was more intoxicating to me than the whiskey had been. She looked up at me, recognized me and smiled sweetly. She started to speak.

As I knelt, her visage faded. Soon she was as transparent as a ghost. And then she was gone. A few seconds later, so was I.

Everything had faded into blackness and then the blackness was nothingness.

The last words I remember hearing were like echoes inside my head.

“I have a-something … for you…”
