Quand on a réparé mon ordi, on a été obligé de changer le disque dur. Heureusement, on a réussi à récupérer toutes mes photos  de l’ancien. Hier en farfouillant dans l’ordi, j’ai retrouvé une photo de Diabolo que j’ai trouvé toute mimi. J’adore le regarder dormir, il est mignon et marrant (avec ses petites pattes repliées). Je suppose que toutes les mamans (de vrais bébés hein?!) aiment aussi regarder leurs enfants dormir…ben moi c’est pareil. Ah ouais ça peut paraitre con à certains, mais moi mon chat c’est mon bébé…

The horror and frustration has finally passed. I no longer have to commit myself to such insanity. Well, for the next few days. NaNoWriMo starts on Sunday. Damn

Anyway, this is the Ice Cracker. It actually took me several days to learn, but I haven’t been diabolo-ing much this last week, so it’s kinda a let down finale. But try to enjoy it!

Sunday marks the beginning of November, and the beginning of the biggest story-writing-marathon of my life … so far. I’ll post more on it some time tomorrow or tonight.

Slap on the wrists! ‘Tis true, I am one day late with this video. For shame!

Je voulais faire cette note hier, mais après la note consacrée à Pedro faite par Mimnor, me suis dis que ça allait faire trop copié. Puis après reflexion, me suis dis, que cette photo était marrante et que j’avais envie de vous la montrer. La qualité n’est pas top, parce qu’elle a été prise avec mon téléphone. The next trick, completed, learnt and uploaded well within the second week. Hooray!

This is called the Tomicide. Now, I know what you’re thinking: ‘Tom, you’re a creative genius! Making up a trick of your own is brilliant! And naming it after yourself – superb!’

Well, you’re wrong. I’m not vain enough to name a trick after myself. And I’m no creative genius either.

The next trick should be coming up by next Wednesday. Hopefully in the meantime there’ll be some other interesting stuff coming up. *Cough* Pete *Cough*.

So, the first new trick of the month is completed, marking a quarter of my October Challenge completed.

This is called the Inverse Slap Suicide. The next mighty achievement is on the way, hopefully by the 14th.

I know it’s late, both month-wise and time-wise, and I’m wearing little more than God intended, but I want to get this post done before I forget…

I’ve been diaboling a LOT of late, and am constantly trying to do new tricks, in preparation for the November festival I’m doing. So, I promised myself that I’d learn a new trick every week, and that evolved into a … Challenge of the Month!

I’ve already learnt one simple one, which I’ll film and upload soon, probably tomorrow, and I’m also working on my second, hopefully to be completed and learnt by the 14th. Hay veces que la ilustración, un buen comic tiene el poder de hipnotizarme. Es como si escuchara, mientras paso las hojas, huelo el papel y me dejo impactar por colores, formas y facturas… “esto de producir belleza también lo podemos hacer los humanos y ahora mismo te lo estoy regalando”.

No recordaba la precisa y bonita reseña de Álvaro Pons en su “carcel de papel” (A veces me resulta un poco absurdo escribir sobre comic existiendo este Sr. y su blog. Supomgo que aporto subjetividad absoluta y menos cantidad de recomendaciones y en el mundo de la sobreinformación se suele agradecer).

Buscaba un libro de fotografia para el cumpleaños de mi hermano y me llamo la atención ese “verde hospital” (es un color clavado a aquel que le gustaba tanto a Karra por el que caí en la tentación de comer el chocolate amargo con sales de Ibiza…) de la portada.

Cuando lo abres no tienes muy claro como será la historia pero percibes que se desarrolla por completo en una pisicina, que algo tiene que ver con un personajes central e intuyes algun encuentro o desencuentro.

La historia es sencilla, la factura perfecta; las imagenes, el tiempo, las secuencias, las bocas abiertas cogiendo aire, los colores de “bajoelagua” y “sobreelagua”, los juegos buceando, el techo cuando nadas de espaldas,…

No recordaba yo a esta editorial: Diabolo. Ya me ha enganchado y les seguire de cerca a pesar de usar la “comicsans” en su web.

Quizás me enganche especialmente por este mes de cursillo de la pequeña dónde yo he aprovechado para nadar un poco más de lo habitual. También lo leí con ella y disfrutó. Era ver imagenes y puntos de vista reconocibles. Realmente parece que huelas a cloro. Je.

Comparto un par de hojas interiores. Muy recomendable!!

Unfortunately, I’m losing track of how many diabolo videos I’ve posted here. Although it’s my second to YT, it might be my third here, so I remain unsure…

Anyway, I realised I haven’t done anything interesting blog-wise lately, and so decided to share with you a few tricks I’ve been working on. I sort of wanted to test out my new strings – longer and smoother than previously – and so decided to combine this with some new tricks.

I’m hoping to perform at a festival in November with another diaboloist and several jugglers. I will of course capture it on video and show it here. Not many details have been given to me as of yet, though. It was pretty much a case of my friend approaching me and saying ‘We’ve been asked to do a diabolo routine at a little festival in October… No, wait… November.’ For all I know, the date will continue to fall back.

I’d better get working on some routines.

Remember “new math?” Wasn’t it just old math - with a twist?

I can’t recall what the twist was (natch), but I can think of plenty of other twists and twisters… tongue twisters, Twister the movie, and Twister the floor game that’s been around since, uh… when I was a kid!  But my latest “twist” is new parenting. Or is it just old parenting – with a twist?

New parenting

Is there really ever anything new about parenting, other than new twists on old problems? Do the basics stay the same, but shift position? Left foot red, right hand blue?

Now laughter, a tangle, a tumble – and time to get back up again and start over?

Distance learning

These days, I’m relearning issues of “teen space” from my 16-year old son. It’s new territory, a kind of distance learning, as I adjust to his changing needs.

With my college-age kid – this is also new territory. He’s been gone for a month; I’ve communicated little, only responding to his calls and texts. I’m purposely giving him distance. I want to be available without intruding, so while I miss him dreadfully I have left him alone.

He called last week, a few days before his birthday, dancing around the subject of missing home. We talked for awhile, the first real talk since he left. He made a point of saying that I could call or email him anytime. That was an important moment. He still wanted and needed me in his world. 

Technology trade-offs

We have so many ways to communicate now – cell, computer, text, twitter, Facebook, email, web cam. At times, all these tools are terribly interruptive, and I worry that we, as parents, are setting poor examples with our own use of these technologies.

But they also provide extraordinary advantages for:

• keeping in touch
• dealing with emergencies
• learning almost anything, from almost anywhere
• meetings, mailings, networking
• and maintaining long distance relationships, including parenting college kids.

Physical and emotional contact

Last I heard, parenting included real engagement, not just “showing up.” Easier said than done. And particularly tough with teens – on both sides. Kids are stressed and deal with so much going on inside; adults are frazzled, and often, worn out.

We all do our best. We can probably do better.

I tell myself that every day, with my younger son. And doing better includes walking away from my laptop and cell phone when we’re talking. Occasionally, it includes a hug – if he seems in the mood.

Twist and shout!

Last evening my older son spontaneously “skyped” me from his tiny cinder block dorm room, and we enjoyed a meandering 45-minute conversation via laptop. He described his birthday celebration on his hall, his German class, his calculus professor, and the apple tart I had delivered to him with the help of a friendly pastry shop in Boston’s Italian North End. All the while, he was showing me new tricks on his diabolos (Chinese yoyo juggling). I could see him, hear him, and share his contentment. Real engagement, even from 900 miles away.

The new twist in my parenting? My new math?

Skype + Webcam = long distance parenting.

And I will continue to take my cues from both my sons. Today may be left foot red, right hand blue, and tomorrow may bring some other tie-up, tumble, and restart. But for now – we’re still us, with a twist.

Big Little Wolf’s Daily Plate of Crazy

Vergangene Woche hatte ich das Glück, Freikarten für Zirkus Flic Flac zu gewinnen. Gestern war es dann so weit. Die Vorfreude war groß, denn so weit ich mich erinnern kann, muss mein letzter Zirkus-Besuch schon mindestens 10 Jahre zurückliegen. Umso mehr freute ich mich, dass die Freikarten zur Kategorie 1 gehörten – optimale Sicht. Wie der Name vermuten lässt, dreht sich bei Flic Flac alles ausschließlich um Akrobatik und andere Spielereien. D.h., keine gequälten oder misshandelten Tiere.

Punkt 19.30 Uhr begann die Show. Ich hätte jedoch erwartet, dass das Innere des Zeltes größer ist. Jedenfalls hatte es von außen den Anschein. Aber das nur als Randbemerkung. Ich könnte jetzt über jeden Programmpunkt schwelgen und beschreiben, wie toll er war. Würde aber keinen Sinn machen. Das, was da geboten wird, muss man selbst erleben. In zweimal einer Stunde, getrennt durch eine 15 Minütige Pause, bekommt das Publikum eine Show der Spitzenklasse geboten! Es gab wirklich keine Minute, in der ich nicht absolut gefesselt war. (Das ist bei mir nicht einfach) Das Programm war ein Mix aus Akrobatik, Comedy, Jonglage, Flugtrapez, Todesrad, Trampolin und vielen weiteren faszinierenden Darbietungen.

Ich erwischte mich immer wieder dabei, wie ich mit offenem Mund da saß und dem Spektakel gebannt zusah. Die Akteure wussten zu fesseln und immer, wenn man dachte, das gibt’s doch nicht, setzten sie noch einen drauf. Bestes Beispiel ist z.B. der ‘Globe of Speed’ mit einem Durchmesser von lediglich 5,80 m, in dem zum Schluss 8 (!) Motorradfahrer mit 60 Sachen durchrasen. Auch die erst unscheinbar wirkende Diabolo-Show entwickelte sich schnell zum Publikumsliebling, als Xelo z.B. seine 3 Leuchtdiabolos aus fast 20 m auffing und schier unmögliche Kunststücke vollführte.

Musikalisch werden fast alle Programmpunkte mit Live Gesang von Frank Fabry begleitet. Passend zum Thema “Underground”, ist er eine Mischung aus Udo Lindenberg und Rammstein. Der einzige Programmpunkt, der mir negativ aufgefallen ist, war die Billard-Jonglage. Entweder hatte die Dame einen wirklich schlechten Tag oder war eine Aushilfe. Nichts wollte so wirklich klappen und wirkte teilweise sogar etwas lustlos, schade. Nichts desto trotz fällt es mir nicht schwer, die Show mit superlativen zu beschreiben.

Abschließend kann man sagen, dass nur Gutes zu berichten ist. Einen Besuch kann ich jedem nur wärmstens ans Herz legen. Ich ging mit Bauchschmerzen vor Lachen und nass geschwitzt, und das nicht nur wegen den gefühlten 50°, aus dem Zelt. Hätte ich die 43 Euro pro Karte zahlen müssen, hätte ich es definitiv nicht bereut. Wer die Show besuchen möchte, kann das noch bis 06. September in der Gummersbacher Straße in Köln tun. Danach zieht das Ensemble weiter nach Pforzheim.

Dagen i dag startet med at jeg blei vekt av klokka 0630. Rett etter at telefonen (med alarmen) føk i veggen sovna jeg fredlig videre. Sto opp ikke lenge etter fordi den jævla telefonen telefonen ringte igjen. (Denne gangen fordi noen ringte, rakk den ikke så hvis du ringte, og du ser dette: sorry:P)

Etter en kort tur på byen og litt div. lok bar det rett på jobb. Jobb er kult. VI har endelig fått diabolo! SÅnn rar dings som alle barna bare MÅ fordi en eller annen dude gjorde noe fancy med den i norske talenter. Så løp og kjøp…

Tenkte forresten at jeg ksulle legge til en sak til, siden alle spør:
Ja, seff skal jeg fortsette på Katta til neste år. Tror du klassen min ville klart seg uten meg eller:P Bæ azz..
