You name them, we follow them. Whether it’s the self-imposed muses at Kingdom of Style, or the king of street stalking Sartorialist, fashion bloggers are the future.

We’ve shown our admiration for the Susie Style Bubbles, Bryan Boys and Tommy Tons, and Journalists from industry fashion bibles continue praise the mantras of those already on top. But fashion leaders must always be on the lookout for what’s new – what’s hot. Especially when a majority of the fashion bloggers shop at the same places.

The creme de la creme of High street retailers: American Apparel, Urban Outfitters, H&M, and Topshop are forever indebted to the fashionistas who consistently create looks on their blogs that inspire a growing batch of followers. Without this new school of “unofficial” spokespeople, fashion retailer’s net profits would plummet at jet speed.

This post is an ode the new generation of bloggers. They’re young, fashion-forward, and proudly Canadian.

Regardless of how different they are in content, the selected fashionistas have three things in common: high street style, thrift shops and character.

So here we go.(And by the way, all images are properties of the blog owners.)

The Dreamer: Rachel, 16, Serva Me, Servabo Te.

This young blogger loves pretty floral print dresses and far away places. In July 2008, Rachel founded Save me, And I Will Save You. With piercing green eyes, fiery red hair, and a direct sense of fashion, Rachel updates her followers about fashion finds at Toronto’s vintage shops, and has a knack for binding art, fantasy books and music into her fashion entries. Though she has a passion for fashion, it’s easy to see her cultivating a career in the literary world, maybe with Penguin Books.

The Fashion Creator: Katia, 17, Blinding Bright Lights.

Whether Katia’s venturing european countries or strolling NYC, this Montrealer/Student is a self-proclaimed “fashion-obsessed vegetarian with extremely high hopes for the future.” Fashion through her eyes is a cluttered barrage of colour, and putting looks together is much like changing underwear – she does it often. Her posts garner a legion of responses, which means she’s becoming a prominent voice within Canada’s fashion blogsphere. Maybe she’ll launch her own line, land a job at Colette or French Elle.

The Fashion Editor: Lea, 13, Lea Likes Fashion.

Don’t be fooled by the pouty demure in this picture; there’s nothing emo about Lea’s blog. In fact, it’s along the lines of UK’s Grazia. At just 13-years-old, Lea’s one of the most underrated yet promising personalities in Canadian fashion – literally. She’s a woman of little words but high on visual content. Noting Alexander McQueen as one of her favorite designers, she’s quick to post pre-season haute couture collections and one-on-one guides of her own daily looks. She’s got the look that will land her in front row of fashion weeks, and she’s got lifestyle flair; she posts food recipes and tips making her a well-rounded blogger. Word to the wise Lea, have you seen MCQ’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection of to die for bags?

The Society Girl: Olivia, 21, Stylestruck.ca.

She’s got a cute cropped cut and kick ass heels. And when she’s not giving the low down of what’s in her closet, Fashion Blogger Olivia does her own rendition of street stalking. She’s all about who’s who in the Vancouver’s (and abroad) fashion scene. She’s got a positive attitude and wears a bright smile to match. She’s definitely one of those fashionistas you’ll see working the PR circuit for a well-renowned fashion house, maybe Diane Von Furstenberg?

The Glam Girl: Abbey, 16, Abbey Karson Blog.

Abbey’s got enough style to be apart of the team behind über-fashion mags like Pop, or Katie Grand’s Love. Note the british mags mentioned; that’s because she’s cool, maybe too cool to be in Canada. With her doll-like features and semi-beehive hairstyle, Abbey is essentially Britpop to-the-max. The quality of the images on her blog are stunning and the fashion-girl-against-rural-backdrop (except when she is in front of her magazine poster plastered wall) is fresh and exciting.

The Indie Fashion Maven: Siân, 23, Good Stuff Here.

Out of all the bloggers, Siân would probably be the most anti-mainstream, though she genuinely is the most avant-garde. This Makeup Artist from Toronto’s style resonates throughout her blog; she’s one of those personalities you can see getting in with weekly indies like Toronto’s Now! Magazine, or working her magic through commissions from Creative Agencies. She’s an unapologetic blogger, not afraid to voice her dislikes which gives her platform a niche following. And, considering a lot of the fluff bloggers tend to do (myself included), that’s not such a bad thing. If all else fails, she can always become a spokes model for Carri Mundane’s Cassette Playa collection.

I’ve been inspired by a few different things lately… among them, Karen O (as always), a little dip back into Cabaret, skeletons, deer, sequins, studs, faux fur, and Bauhaus.

As the nights get colder and the days begin to gray, I find myself aesthetically drawn to dark themes, motifs from nature and how wolves can be juxtaposed with deer… stylistically and metaphorically.

Obviously the CFDA Fashion Awards are going to bring out some of the best dressed people in the industry. With models and muses in head to toe designer labels, it’s no surprise that last nights award show was total couture eye candy. Here are some of my favorite looks:

Harley Viera-Newton (second from right) in Ohne Titel

Olivia was seen at the Audi TDI Clean Diesel Dinner last night at The Standard hotel. Looks like Liv isn’t letting her new job at ELLE keep her from maintaining her socialite status.

it’s not only for cougars, you know. It’s a firey, confidence booster, and you’ll love how it emphasizes your curvaceous – or lack there of – figure.

While the animal print wasn’t a major trend on the runway, the designers that did it (Dian Van Furstenberg, Giambattista Valli, L.A.M.B respectively) held a consistent theme: The Safari adventure.

Wrapping your silhouette in animal print is much like a venture in the dangerous Congo; beware of the predator. For, when he sets his eye on you, he’ll want to do more than just buy you dinner (wink).

It’s deadly. Deadly sexy… indeed.

So, on the Rachel Zoe Project season 2 (that I ended up watching like half of before I threw up my hands and gave up because it just contained too many bananas and frustrating manager skills and moodiness), there was one episode when Rachel went to visit Diane von Furstenberg and we were introduced to the Fall 2009 Nomad collection. Honestly, my first reaction was “OMG…” And that wasn’t a happy or ecstatic OMG – that was an oh dear OMG. It was just very hairy and overwhelming and too Mongolian-ish for me, but I guess it had to be like that for runway and creative reasons.

[style.com]

Anyways, that crazy hat that’s available now for non-models and normal folks, is actually pretty cute and unique and fun. I would actually consider getting it and at $150, it isn’t that expensive (relatively speaking). I’ve never ever been a hat person – like EVER. I think the last time I wore a hat in public was when I went skiing in Whistler, Canada in ninth grade. And I only did that because my mother made me since it was so cold. I digress. It’s not like I hate hats or have anything against them; in fact, if I thought I actually looked half-decent in hats, I would wear them. I’m probably a little jealous of people who look simply ravishing(?!) in cool headgear. An example would be Sibling. I would say I am wanting a hat now because of this really amazing handmade, cozy hat she got on a recent trip to Argentina:

Awesome, isn’t it? Do you like my makeshift hat stand? haha But I told Sibling that I would never go out and wear this. If I sport this only at home, I’m okay with that. But I really do like DVF Jasmina pom pom hat… but knowing the lame me, I’d probably buy it and display it in my room, and prance around my house with it, and never step out my front door.

In a world where an actor can get paid up to $20 million dollars for one movie, it’s good to see Hollywood’s major league giving back to an amazing cause – like Women In Need. For the past 25 years, WIN has been helping out women, children, and families who are homeless and disadvantaged.

WIN has come together with big names like Diane Von Furstenberg, P. Diddy, Oscar de la Renta, the Beckhman family, Mary J. Blige, and many others to create amazing, truly individual homes to be auctioned for charity. The “Homes for the Holiday” houses will be available via CharityBuzz.com now til November 30th.

My personal favorite? Casa de la DVF!

Yes, you can afford to wear this dress! The basement of my parents’ house is a graveyard of dresses

Yes, you can afford to wear this dress!

The basement of my parents’ house is a graveyard of dresses from years gone by. Prom dresses, formal dresses, dresses worn to weddings – you name it, and you can find it down there. Seriously, I put Katherine Heigl’s 27 dresses to shame. And the worst part of it all is that these precious and costly dresses only saw the light of day once in their entire existence. They got all prettied up, made their debut, and then got stuffed back in the closet never to be seen again. Honestly, it’s a little heart-breaking.

In this day and age of recession and cutbacks on my wardrobe, I simply can’t afford to keep on living this way. Which is why RentTheRunway.com is saving my life. Their slogan is “Love. Wear. Return.” and one look at their website will have you fashion-orgasming, I promise.

This mail-order service allows women to rent high-end fashions for one-tenth of the retail price. Running from $50 to $200 for a four-night loan, that Diane Von Furstenberg dress you’ve been eyeing will be delivered to your doorstep, in TWO SIZES just in case. After you’ve had your fun, you simply mail it back to the company, and they take care of the dry-cleaning. It’s so effortless I may slip into a fashion coma.

Do you know what this means? Never spending a fortune on a dress you’ll probably wear once before it goes out of style. Always looking better than everyone else at the party because you’re in the latest Christian Siriano design. And finally, the end of outfit-repeating. I’m literally hyperventilating at the thought.

Praise be couture, Rent the Runway is mecca. Now I just need somewhere to go. If only it were acceptable to wear Chanel to a frat party.

Just like any other fashionista, I want clothes that are right off the runway and want to look great

Just like any other fashionista, I want clothes that are right off the runway and want to look great. This kind of lifestyle comes with a cost for those of us who don’t have the income to drop hundreds or thousands of dollars on haute couture clothes.

Now there’s an answer that will make every woman jump for joy: Rent the Runway.

This new site’s idea is simple: “Love. Wear. Return.”

Rent the Runway is an online website that makes high-end fashion affordable. Their concept is very simple.

1. Apply for a membership.

2. Once approved, browse the pages for a dress you lust over.

3. Give your dress size and dates when you want it (The dress can be rented for 4 or 8 days).

4. Pay 10 percent of the retail price.

5. Have it delivered to your address (It will arrive in 2-3 days).

6. Return it when finished.

It’s really that simple, according to the site. I just applied for membership a few days ago, so I haven’t experienced this first hand. But the concept seems really amazing.

RTR buys clothes at retail prices and offers it much less to the customer. For example, this Helmut Lang dress retails for $415, but you can rent it for $50.

Each dress comes another size of the same dress just in case it doesn’t fit properly. There is also a Fit Kit included containing double-sided tape, deodorant wipe outs and a Magic Clip bra converter. What’s not to love about this already?

Some of the designers RTR features are Diane Von Furstenberg, Herve Leger, Proenza Schouler, Christian Siriano and Christina Colta.

Taylor Swift wearing a Tracy Reese dress that is now available at RTR.

Rent the Runway began with Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss coming up with the idea after a friend was having a wardrobe crisis. The two had a meeting with Diane Von Furstenberg and the site was started. The site is always updating their clothes and wardrobes.

When I become a member, I’ll post an update with what I thought of the experience. Would any of you use this? What would be your dream dress to wear for an evening?

Quoted from Style.com

“Going Gaga

At last night’s 13th Annual ACE Awards, the Accessories Council honored a fashion icon who’s made of plastic (Barbie) and a performer (Lady Gaga) who showed up in headwear that resembled an oversized cotton ball. Those trendsetting blondes were a couple of the more unconventional stars of an event devoted to recognizing the most influential forces in the world of handbags, hats, sunglasses, and—in the words of Accessory Visionary Award winner Diane von Furstenberg—other “friends you can carry with you and they make you feel better.”

Agyness Deyn took the stage in arresting feather eyelashes and Lucite bracelets to accept Burberry’s Brand of the Year award on behalf of Christopher Bailey. (“He’s in Asia, opening a new Burberry store,” she explained.) TOMS Shoes founder Blake Mycoskie waltzed in with Erin Wasson on his arm and a pair of exotic slip-ons on his feet. “They are absolutely, 100 percent fake zebra,” he assured us. Accepting the Humanitarian Award, Mycoskie struck the evening’s most sincere note: “Shoes, for 40 percent of the world, are not an accessory. They’re a necessity.”

Notably, both retail awards went to Web sites: Gilt Groupe and Zappos.com, the latter of which Betsey Johnson introduced by way of (what else?) a cheerleader routine. Tomas Maier’s acceptance speech for Designer of the Year was over almost before it began, while Gaga used her time at the dais to thank Marc Jacobs, Hedi Slimane, Stephen Gan, David LaChapelle, Araki (“for photographing my soul, not my image”), and Nasir Mazhar, designer of the Orbit hat the pop star wore on Ellen and “which has now become an experience.” Gaga made a vow on behalf of her style team—”We will never do a line; we are not an economy”—and closed the proceedings with an unexpected fashion tip: “The most important fashion accessory is the condom.” Advice that doesn’t apply to Barbie, of course.

Cheryl Cole is not known on the northern hemisphere of the planet (at least not enough to have an impact), but in the UK she’s beyond media darling. She’s somewhat of a quasi-God to the slebrity-obsessed and fashion press a like.

She is beautiful, that’s for sure. And her story is relatable. She grew up on the rough side of England on an estate ( over there, the estates are not-so-good). She won a reality TV competition landing a spot in group Girls Aloud (basically, a contemporary, modernized version of Spice Girls). Surprisingly, the group hasn’t crossed over as their predecessors did. But her life is a fairy tale – with a lot of loopholes. She married mega-rich Soccer Pro Ashley Cole (He plays for Chelsea), and over a short course of time her look has gone from chav, to WAG, to a woman all her own. However, she still has a bit of that Chav mentality complementing her history of bar fights and potty mouth square offs with other celebrities. But as they say, you can take the ghetto out the hood, but you can’t take the hood out the ghetto. Regardless of her raucous ways, she’s graced countless magazine covers and has been placed at the top of almost all of UK’s best dressed lists. While I do definitely question all the hype, I have to salute the fact that she made the cover of British Vogue.

I’ve never seen Ms. Cole look as good as she did within those pages. And I don’t think I ever will again. I do believe it’s a good idea for her to revel in her fame while it’s around. Her style counsel is steering her in the right direction; I sure hope that she’ll settle into her look and become a true fashion icon.

Get The Look

The Top – Chale Pussy-Bow Blouse by Diane von Furstenberg. $261 (CAD).

I do prefer a long-sleeve with sequin leggings – especially with sequin leggings. I also prefer if the blouse covers the bum and it doesn’t look like this one does, but chances are you may have a coat on top anyway.

The Pant - Dégradé Sequin Leggings by Stella McCartney. $837.20 (USD).

Apparently they’re sold out. You’ve got to be kidding me. These are the most gorgeous sequin leggings I’ve ever seen. The dégradé effect adds elegance and in a way, it tells you how to wear them. Start light as a top and make sure the shoes are dark – but not brown or black, please.

The Shoe - Taupe Moos pump by Aldo. $90(USD).

The Broach – I found this Cream Pearl and Crystal Cluster Brooch for $14.99 (USD) by White Aisle.

The bracelet – Silver-tone Swarovski Crystal-Embellished Bracelet by Roberto Cavalli. $1,415 (USD).

The said theater buff, Bee Shaffer was rumored to be desperate for a job (aren’t we all) until news hit today via Guest of a Guest that she would be sweating the subways and fetching coffee for none other than College Humor’s co-founder Ricky Van Veen, who is mentored by Barry Diller, husband of Diane von Furstenberg. That was a mouthful. Preferential treatment was not given to the daughter of Anna Wintour. It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there and even socialites can not boast an advantage over the common citizens. If you were running a multimillion dollar business, would you hire Lindsay Lohan to be your creative director? I would hope not. Come to think of it, what ever happened to Bee Shaffer pursuing a law degree?

As I skimmed through an issue of SELF magazine, I stumbled on the profiles of the women who were awarded Most Inspiring Women of 2009. Each of them were asked the same question, What was your most valuable lesson? Here’s what two of them had to say. Their answers are both encouraging and challenging at the same time.

Nancy Brinker, Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and Race for the Cure said, “My mother always told us that when we grew up, it was our job to fix the world. Every weekend she had a project for us, whether it was the Red Cross or taking food to people.” Nancy took that lesson to heart after she lost her sister to breast cancer. Her own personal devastation and grief motivated her to start a foundation that has now become a global movement. October is coming to an end and with it the end of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but the foundation that Nancy Brinker started is committed to this cause year-round and saving the lives of thousands of women.

Diane Von Furstenberg, Fashion Design Icon said, “Fear is not an option. My mother, a Holocaust survivor, taught me that – it was her gift to me.” Being a woman in business can be brutal at times and the fashion industry is certainly not known for its compassion. Diane Von Furstenberg achieved the success she enjoys today because she never allowed fear to dictate her decisions. I think fear is probably the one thing that most commonly stops us from realizing our dreams and goals in life.

Two very different women, with two very different answers. The common ground for both was their moms.

For all you young moms out there, and those of you who hope to one day join the ranks of motherhood… never underestimate the power of influence you have in your child’s life. We can learn so much from what these two successful women have done with their mother’s advice, but don’t forget the moms behind them.
