I hung out 3 loads of washing to dry this morning before 8am.

Am rather over the whole night time bed wetting thing.

Heidi was waking up dry every morning in her pull ups, so after a few months of this I decided it was foolish to spend money on more pull ups and Heidi could sleep in underpants. Things went well for a couple of weeks with more dry nights than wet. But now it is wet every night. Partially it is that she starts to wet, wakes up and goes to the toilet, those times we just have to change the mat that goes over her bottom sheet. But it is partially because Heidi is so exhausted & overwhelmed by the festive season that she is sleeping very deeply and those nights everything gets soaked.

I had an ‘Ah Ha’ moment when I remembered the cloth pull ups that we’d purchased when the girls are toilet training they have waterproof outside layer and absorbent fabric inside layer. Makes a big difference on the nights when Heidi just starts to wet and wakes up.

Annie is still in pull ups and will be for a while yet I suspect. We have been able to get assistance from the local Continence Nurse and she has provided mattress and pillow protectors and also showed us how to access funding for pull ups. I’d like to try the bed wetting alarm system but that is no longer recommended for children on the Autism Spectrum and also they wouldn’t do it until Annie was at least 7yo anyway. Even with the pull ups Annie’s bed is often wet in the morning…. the continence nurse provided booster pads to put inside the pull ups, but that was too bulky and uncomfortable for Annie.

So we soldier on with interrupted sleep to wake up and change bedding, mountains of stinky bedding to wash, not to mention all the regular laundry that still needs doing. I’m hoping that January brings a change, at least for Heidi as we get back into a more regular routine. Until then, thank god it is just pee’d on bedding and not anything worse.

Here’s a question for the ages: What do Halloween costume execs sniff before making their deci

Here’s a question for the ages: What do Halloween costume execs sniff before making their decisions as to what costumes will be available for toddlers in any given year? I’m only asking because – well, let me tell you the story, and you decide.

So no shit, there we were, (credit to our Art Teacher for the catchy introductory phrase) my husband and I and our darling, cherubic (most of the time!) blonde haired, blue-eyed oldest daughter, who at the time was two, scouring the aisles of the local Wal Mart for a Halloween costume for the Daughter Unit. And I mean scouring the aisles. There wasn’t much to work with.

DH: “What size does she wear, again?”

Me: “Ummm…3T.”

DH: “Yep, no, these are all for newborns. Wait, here’s one! No, it’s a Spider Man costume.”

Me: (hopefully) “Well, she could be Spider Man.”

DH: “It’s too big for her. Wait! 3T? Here are the 3Ts. Let’s see…they’ve got fairy princess” (holds up flimsy, diaphanous outfit complete with wings.)

Me: “Umm…Hon? Yeah. Halloween. It’s going to be cold outside. I’m going to go with “no” on the short, see-through gown thing.”

DH: ” Well, here’s Pirate Queen in 3T…”

Me: “How are we supposed to explain to Anna what she is for Halloween? She’s too young to understand Johnny Depp!” (Of course, she takes off her shirt for Leonardo Da Vinci at Renaissance Fairs, but that’s a whole ‘nother story…) To DD: “No, Anna! Put DOWN the skeleton outfit, that’s for grownups.”

DH: ” Um – Melle?” (Holds up long, white thing.) “This is the only other one I can find in 3T.”

Me: (looking at mounds of white stuff in DH’s hands) “What is it, a ghost?”

DH: ” No. It’s a bride costume.”

Me: (incredulous) “It’s a WHAT?!”

DH: ” A bride costume. See? It even has a little veil, a bouquet…”

Me: ” NO. NO! What crazy, glue sniffing, brown-cracksmoking Halloween executive decided that it would be cool to dress a toddler – a TODDLER – up as a BRIDE?! I mean, who would ever even think of that?!” D

H: ” Umm… pedophiles?”

Me: (withering glance) ” That’s not even close to being funny. No! This is Halloween, for God’s sake, not a Middle Ages meeting between parents trying to marry off their underaged daughters to the highest bidder! Where are the pumpkin outfits, the ghost outfits, the cute, furry little full-length animal costumes? They had those last year, remember, and Anna was a tiger, and it was so cute? Where are the witch costumes, even, for God’s sake?”

DH: (helpfully) ” Well, there is the Pirate Queen.”

Me: ” NO! No pirate queen. Honestly! Who comes up with this stuff? Seriously. I mean – fairy princess, pirate queen, or BRIDE?! And that’s IT, that’s all the choice we have? They have seventeen different kinds of ORANGE JUICE in this store, and they can’t come up with more than three kinds of Halloween outfits for little 2-year old girls?”

We did NOT get a costume that evening. Instead, we decided to head down to North Carolina over the weekend. They have a Burlington Coat Factory – we were pretty sure we could do better than “pirate queen.” Unfortunately, there were no costumes at the BCF – but there WERE adorable little confections of Christmas dresses on sale. We decided to get a Christmas dress. I loaded up a dressing room with about seven of them and Anna started trying them on. Not, however, before she got a chance to see how things worked in a dressing room. There were several men there with their daughters – older than Anna, probably around 8,9,10 years old or so – so, naturally, said fathers were not accompanying their daughters into the dressing rooms.

Anna picked up on this right away. With a withering glance and the imperiousness only a 2-year old who’s got it all figured out can muster, she pointed to the dressing room door and said authoritatively: “Daddy, you get OUT, right NOW.”

Daddy did NOT join us in the dressing room. He browsed in the men’s section instead. Anna tried on pretty, frilly dress after pretty, frilly dress. After each was safely on and fastened up, she pranced up and down the aisle and did a few spins, reveling in long “swooshy” skirts. But I guess she got bored – or really got into the moment. Because around dress number four, as I was undoing the zipper and trying to get the thing off the hanger, I heard a rustling sound behind me. Turning, I saw my darling daughter’s pull-up lying on the floor at my feet, and her bare little tushie and spiderlike legs crawling under the dressing room door.

OMIGOD.

The next thing you know, I hear the thud-thud-thud sound that is Anna’s feet when she is running, and an ungodly, high-pitched noise that after a moment revealed itself to be her little voice, continuously exclaiming, rapturously and at its highest pitch:

“ANNA’S A NAKED BABY! ANNA’S A NAKED BABY!”

I opened the dressing room in time to see my darling daughter in her birthday suit, running her little stiff-legged run, waving her arms wildly in the air, screaming her new catchphrase over and over again – and heading onto the next aisle. I probably should have run right after her and covered her with something. Instead, I did what any mildly insane mother would do in such circumstances. I sat on the dressing room floor and laughed until I almost peed my pants.

Yeah, you know. You remember the first time your child did something like that.

Eventually, things righted themselves. Anna put her diaper back on, we found a dress – we even found an adorable Halloween costume, courtesy of K-Mart, of all places. If you ask my daughter what she’s going to be for Halloween, she proudly announces to the entire room, “I’m a widdle ftinker.” Which, translated into grownup talk, means a nice, furry, warm, full-body skunk costume complete with pull-over head and wavy little tail. But I confess – I’m still not sure who’s running the show. I just hope it’s not those glue-sniffing Halloween execs.

Author’s disclaimer – this was posted on an earlier blog I wrote several years ago, but since this blog actually has some traffic, I thought you’d enjoy the story. )

Welcome to AdvertEye – a blog for people who enjoy the entertainment of ads. If you don’t get up to use the bathroom during the ad breaks, or if you’ve come close to crashing your car because a billboard caught your eye, then this blog is for you.

BabyLove Nappies

To start things off with a bang (literally), I’d like to thank BabyLove Nappies and agency DDB Melbourne for not only creating a nappy/diaper ad that actually shows baby poo, but for being the first I’ve seen to show explosive diarrhoea or “number 3’s” (you do the math).

Well done.

To draw in its target, you’re shown the familiar cute baby faces, happy mother and calming music… but in a surprise twist, rather than blue liquid, we’re given a SUV-sized dose of baby reality (albeit exaggerated for comedic effect). And in describing the product, where competitors have coined scientific-sounding euphemisms like “absorbent core” and “dryness layer”, BabyLove cuts the crap by offering a “poo poo pouch [to] handle a poo explosion”.

Tonight was the night! We knew it was coming. We knew it would be BIG! We just didn’t know exactly when it would come. After 6 very long days, baby G finally pooped her brains out tonight — an epic bowel movement by all accounts. As expected, it took a tag team effort to change this diaper and believe me, it was not for the faint of heart.

I think mommy and daddy were more relieved than baby G in the end. I mean seriously, can you imagine what that must have felt like…post-explosion? She must feel like a brand new baby girl — “all cleaned out,” as Grampie would say.

The question still remains…why? We might never know the answer, but if it happens again, we’ll make sure to have all hands on deck for that diaper change. And yes, we have a lot to be thankful for this Thanksgiving…a whoooooole lot!

Don’t be alarmed. I hadn’t either. I came across them by chance one day and just HAD to give them a try! They were so much cheaper than anything I’d ever seen! ($12.95 a diaper!) These are one size pocket diapers that are cheap! For $12.95 I got the black diaper seen above, a Tweedle Bugs insert, and a doubler.

The interior is a fleece. It reminds me of Fuzzi Bunz fleece interior. They have a pocket opening in the front and back, so like Smartipants, you don’t have to unstuff them. They unstuff in the wash. (Which is a great feature!) The Tweedle Bugs insert is almost identical to a bumGenius insert. The exterior is more nylon feeling and looking. It has no stretch to it as some PULs do. They only come in a snap version, which you all know is a-okay with me!

Shown above with a Blueberry Deluxe to show size. The Tweedle Bug is a similar style to the Blueberry Deluxe and Econappi, but is slightly smaller. This means that this diaper fits smaller than the Blueberry. Realistically, it would fit an 8 lb. baby up to a 35 lb. toddler. (These do fit Imogene, 38 lbs., on the largest setting.) These diapers have some awesome elastic in them. It is super springy, but gentle. So, you can get a good fit without irritating fat thighs.

These are made a bit wider than other diapers. The rise is shorter than a Blueberry, but the width is the same. If your babies are long things, then this may not be a good choice. (Try Haute Pockets or WAHMies.) If you have round babies like I do, you may find the wider top makes it fit those chunky thighs so much better.

The pocket openings do gape a bit. It isn’t a use issue, just a visual one. You also have to make sure the insert isn’t sticking out the front on the smaller sizes. I have never had the insert work its way out while in use.

Do I recommend these diapers? Absolutely! If you want a cheap one size pocket diaper that works, you’ll love this diaper. It does have a limited size/shape range, so if you’ve got an oddly shaped or proportioned little one, you may want to take that into consideration. But overall, I would recommend these over their pricey counterparts any day! I am very happy with these and would happily buy more!

Like the price but need more of a size range? Try Smartipants. Looking for another fleece interior diaper with snaps?

I have several Blueberry Deluxe One Size Pocket diapers. I like them. I don’t love them. You can see my Swaddlebees Econappi Review, since the Econappi and the Blueberry Deluxe are essentially the same diaper. The difference is in the interior and insert materials. The Blueberry Deluxe has a fleece interior and a microfiber/hemp insert. Over time, the interior fabric does pill quite a bit, but it is still very soft.

I have both aplix and snap Blueberry Deluxe diapers. (Thanks to Melissa!) I prefer the snaps. Big surprise, right? The aplix on the Blueberry is very, very strong. It hold up quite well, but I still have my usual aplix issues. On a brand new Blueberry, the aplix is so strong, it takes quite a bit of effort to get it unattached.

I have tried this diaper as an all in two, as the maker of Blueberry and Swaddlebees says you can. It didn’t work out for me. The interior fabric always got wet. I wouldn’t recommend buying these if you are wanting an all in two.

These diapers are on the larger end of one size diapers. Realistically, they fit from about 10 lbs. (if you’ve got a longer, leaner built child- you’re probably not going to get a good fit until 12 lbs.) and max out around 40lbs. Imogene wears them on the largest settings and she is 38 lbs. They have the smallest range of any of our one size diapers.

I have leak issues with these all the time. They are not good night diapers except on the smallest size. The insert gets all bunched up and moved around when the older ones are running around. You cannot put this on a kid and then go play on the playground. The running and climbing always leads to leaks. They work fine when they kids are still, like in their car seat, or just not overly playful. The insert seems just a little too narrow for the diaper.

These diapers are also kind of a pain when you’ve got multiple kids wearing one diaper stash (which is why I use one size diapers to begin with). The inserts snap together, so you have to determine what size you’re using when you put the diaper together. I assemble all my diapers out of the wash. So, with the Blueberry and Econappi, I must decide ahead of time which child will wear the diaper and then set the diaper accordingly. I also have to set those diapers aside for whichever size they are set to. That kind of annoys me. With other diapers, I can stuff them all and leave them all unsnapped, snapping them as I need them snapped. With these, I can’t exactly do that.

The velcro version of this diaper rubs poor Emery’s tummy. He is a rather round boy and the diaper top rolls in a bit on him. The rough Velcro tabs then rub his little tummy. I can readjust the tabs and unroll the top when I notice, but it rolls back as he moves and rubs again.

(Shown above with Econappi.) So, do I recommend the Blueberry Deluxe One Size Pocket diaper? Well, it really isn’t worth the money. If you’ve got money you just want to spend to have that little Blueberry tag on your child’s bum, then go ahead and buy some if you want. Just make sure you buy something else to use at night. Do they work? Yeah, they work for the most part. But you can pay half the price for a diaper that will work twice as well and fit much longer! I know I won’t buy anymore of these. In fact, I wouldn’t have more than one if several more were not given to me. These would work better if you bought different inserts for them. (Something wide, like a Happy Heiney Insert or Haute Pocket Insert would be perfect!)

Went out yesterday with the baby to run errands and other stuff. All was well, but then on the way home we decided to make one more stop to the Korean supermarket. Pulled into the parking lot and the baby started to cry because she was hungry. Thats okay, so we sat around a bit while I fed her her bottle. All done time to go!

Oh, not yet!…time to change the diaper! Thats okay the back seat of the car makes a great changing table. I cleaned her up and just as I was putting the diaper on, she decides that she is not done and lets loose a load in the diaper I was putting on her. Not a problem change the diaper…easy.

Nope, not so easy. I did through the diaper bag and find that I forgot to add more diapers and I only had the one! Nooo problem, just go into the store and buy some. It is a specialty store, but hey…they should have diapers! Into the store I go and look for diapers. I don’t find diapers, but I do find sanitary napkins…its a thought since the server kind of the same purpose, right? Noo, too thin so if she goes again it won’t hold everything in to keep her clean. Lets check again…no still no diapers.

Then I spot them…paper towels. Hmmm…seems like the best bet…plus they are Bounty! Super absorbent! So, that is what I bought. A little folding and tucking and Voila!…paper towel diaper! It worked…not so sure the baby was pleased, but it worked.
