I’ve seen Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, starring Jimmy Stewert, a half-dozen times, but only this weekend did I realize that it also stars…an Armenian.

Photo still from Rear Window Credit: Alfred Hitchcock

You might remember the piano-playing composer with the slanted floor to ceiling windows? Turns out that this actor is not only a Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter, but he is also Armenian. Rostom Sipan ”Ross” Bagdasarian was born in 1919 in Fresno, California and is the cousin of that other Armenian Fresno native, William Saroyan.

The cousin connection launched Bagdasarian into the limelight – first with a role in Saroyan’s broadway debut, The Time of Your Life, and later with a cowritten song, Come on-a My House. Throughout the 1950s, Bagdasarian released songs and played minor roles on the silver screen before landing a number one hit with Witch Doctor in 1958.

Bagdasarian solidified his success with The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) which spun off into the animated, anthropomorphic musical group, Alvin and the Chipmunks. Since Bagdasarian recorded all of the chipmunk’s voices, it is not too much of a stretch to claim Alvin, Simon, and Theodore as Armenians themselves – nationalism knows no bounds.

Not Maghreb related per se, but one can’t just let this pass without comment: Frankfurt

Not Maghreb related per se, but one can’t just let this pass without comment:

Frankfurt – In what many see as a major setback to Europe’s effort to integrate its booming Muslim population – and a potential boost to right-wing parties throughout the continent – Swiss voters Sunday approved a move to ban the construction of new minarets in the country.

The Swiss government had urged voters to reject the ban, saying that it would violate religious freedom and human rights and intensify Islamic radicalism. But in Sunday’s referendum, which was organized by a right-wing political party, more than 57 percent of Swiss residents – a majority in 22 out of the country’s 26’s cantons – approved the proposal.

On the other hand, there’s not really a lot you can say about it either, except that this shouldn’t be taken as some minor aberration. For several years, parts of the Europen political landscape (not to mention the US Republican fringe, which is even loonier, but there are stronger constitutional safeguards there) has been sliding into clear-cut Islamophobic territory. Jew-bashing and other classic gimmicks are now a thing of the past: most far-right populists embrace Israel as a “Western outpost”, claim to have no racial prejudices, and now spend their days almost exclusively targeting Muslims, not on account of their religion, but because of what they call “Islam’s ideology”.

Of course it’s nonsense — they’re bigots, and that’s that. We’ve seen these people before, and apparently didn’t deal firmly enough with them in 1945, so here they are again. The new rhetoric seems to work like a charm, too, no matter how irrational their arguments (“‘Muslims don’t just practice religion, they increasingly make political and legal demands,’ said Walter Wobmann, who heads the initiative behind the referendum“), certainly helped along by their similarly bigoted counterparts in the Muslim world, and even more, I’m sure, by the social tensions raised by the economic crisis .

Conditions vary from country to country, of course — there’s no such thing as a “European debate”, whatever the EU may accomplish in the future — but the general trend is quite clear. Until recently, there was much beating around the bush, and talk about how it’s not really about hating Muslims, it’s just about fighting terrorism and supporting womens’ rights, and adopting a responsible immigration policy. Again, nonsense.

Now, the stage has been set, and here we go: Switzerland has actually voted for a law specifically and openly aimed at Muslims as a religious minority. The gloves are coming off, and this could get considerably worse in years to come.

As for me, I now count myself among the backers of Col. Qadhafi’s Great Popular De-Swissification Plan.

Biserica isi facuse din existenta ei scop in sine.

Dumnezeu are un plan de a utiliza diversitatea in scopul unitatii.

Come dobbiamo regolarci?

Since 2000, I’ve visited London four times, and each time, whether I’m exploring a new part of the city or not, I feel like I’m experiencing the city anew, fresh, exciting, diverse. During my last visit in 2007, I spent time in new parts of the city that I hadn’t spent time in before: the Victoria Albert Museum (yawn, except for the fashion exhibit), Chelsea, walking the streets, eating at overpriced restaurants and peeking into boutiques and pattiseries (where I tasted the local sweet fare), and St Paul’s, which was beautiful, and like most ancient or aged structures in European cities, felt out of place amongst the more modernist buildings and coffee shops dotting the streets around it.

My fondest memories are of staying in Islington in 2005 with my friend Aman and her mausi. The little restaurants, antique shops (where I picked up an aging copy of a Bronte book that I still have to read), the night I ate what I thought was good traditional British fare, bangers and mash, which tasted as bad as it sounds, and the thriving nightclubs, with the 2 we visited being divided by race, and accordingly, music. It was hot, muggy and the perfect start to 2 months of backpacking across Western Europe.

So all this reminiscing brings me to the most current reason of why I love London: 360 Degrees – a three-year programme of cultural explorations that “crosses geographical, linguistic, racial and religious divides to explore notions of ‘home and beyond’.” The project brings 60, 60-second videos on diasporic identity together to bring new visualizations that go beyond “the rhetoric and the headlines.” Be still, my heart. Am loving Moti Roti, the arts organization behind this project, for their vision, and for their ridiculous name. Watch the videos.

Joshua Neustein: Margins Contemporary art unraveling the Dead Sea Scrolls Until January 17, 2010 Now

Joshua Neustein: Margins
Contemporary art unraveling the Dead Sea Scrolls

Until January 17, 2010

Now that the dust has settled upon the Dead Sea Scrolls at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto and the controversy is over, I had the pleasure to see the Margins Exhibit created by Joshua Neustein. Funny how the time between the testaments is sometimes referred to as the ‘silent’ years (c. 433-5 B.C.); as they were anything but silent. The Dead Sea Scrolls were written during this period. They were discovered in 1947 in a cave in the hills overlooking the Dead Sea.

Neustein’s project incorporates the words of poet Edmond Jabès whose works complement the scrolls by referencing lost words, silence, God and the Book. The installation connects with the poetry from The Book of Resemblances and The Book of Margins.

The words appear on acrylic slates seemingly strewn and forgotten on the floor. They are difficult to read as their metallic surface reflects the light of the chandelier that is half hidden in the wall. Mona Filip, Curator, says Margins explores apparent and concealed ideas of the Dead Sea Scrolls, exposing them to the light of our times.

The scrolls and the artists represent the social forces that shaped the intertestamental period – a world of Diaspora. Jews outside of the Holy Land used their Greek translation of the Old Testament as a focus of worship. This theme is found in the words by Jabès:

To speak the language of others, but in the interrogative mode. “Always in a foreign country, the poet uses poetry as an interpreter.”

The recurring theme of the chandelier by Neustein plays a central role in Margins, establishing a luminous presence; although the lights are not fully functional. Imperfections in the appearance of the words and the chandelier speak to us, but there’s a crack in everything – that’s how the light gets in.¹

I just read a neat article: “Vietnam’s Diaspora Urged to Return Home”

I have been thinking about what it would take to change Vietnam and I am growing more and more convinced that Viet Kieu Christians (Vietnamese Diaspora Christians) need to start thinking long-term about how we can be a positive influence in the development of our mother country.

My mother church, the Vietnamese-speaking congregation, is always in a hoopla about how the younger generation does nothing for the Vietnamese people around the world – however I have yet to see them actually do anything for the Vietnamese IN Vietnam.

I’ve challenged a few people that if they are so persistent on serving only the Vietnamese community – they need to return to Vietnam and be a positive influence on the people there and society there.

Maybe it is about time that we as Vietnamese Diaspora Christians start this dialogue about returning home. It is no secret that Christians tend to be in the upper echelon of the financially wealthy in Western society – the numbers are there. If we can transfer our economic prowess and positive and ethical business practices in a society that does not have a clear idea of what business ethics really are – we CAN make an impact!

Maybe it is time to go home.

In Uniunea Europeana partidele liberale sunt partide de coalitii.

In finalul acestui proces Romania poate deveni o democratie consolidata, o democratie consensuala.
