The largest ever hoard of Anglo Saxon treasure has been valued. The gold, which was found on 5th July this year in Staffordshire, was discovered by Terry Herbert while he was out practicing metal detecting on farmland belonging to Fred Johnson. It has now been valued at £3.28 million by the independant Treasure Valuation Committee. The money will be split equally between the two men. The treasure consists of more than 1,500 individual pieces. The collection includes pommel caps and hilt plates. All in all there is 5kg of gold. The significance of the find is being compared to being, at least equal to, the Sutton Hoo discovery of 1939. Highlights of the collection can currently be seen at the British Museum in London. Thanks for reading.

At my school we, like, talked about what we are thankful for. I said I was, like, thankful for my T.V. and, um, my iPod. My stupid teacher said I would have to, like dig a little deeper. I don’t even know what it’s, like, supposed to mean. What am I, like, supposed to dig? Does she, like, want me to, like, go to an archeological dig or whatever? Like, what am I supposed to dig? I’m like looking around my, like, room and it, like, totally describes me. I have a postcard from, like, my best friend from, like, Bolivia. I have all the Harry Potter books ’cause, like, I like to read and stuff. I have my walls painted fuchsia and Chartreuse ’cause those are, like, my favorite colors like I said in the first blog thing. I know it’s, like, really late and stuff but my mom doesn’t even know I’m, like, up. I’m really proud of my, like, sneakiness and stuff. Oh Emfrea Kingjee!

The Department of Energy has just released this week’s oil inventories data. While there are gains almost on all counts, this may not be enough. The key ETFs around the news are the Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH), the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG), the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) reactions based upon the supply data. NYMEX WTI Crude is up $0.06 per barrel at $76.08 10:34 AM EST after the news, which is a far lower price than what has been seen into weekly inventory data in recent weeks.

Crude oil inventories rose 1.019 million barrels to 337.808 million barrels; Dow Jones had estimates at +1.5 million barrels, but we were happy with anything over about 800,000 barrels.

Gasoline inventories rose 1.003 million barrels to 210.085 million barrels; Dow Jones was at +500,000 which is very close to what traders had said they were looking to.

Distillates was the one soft spot with a draw down of 529,000 barrels to 166.868 million barrels. The good news is that refining capacity came right in-line with estimates at 80.25%. Frankly, we were getting anxious as we never like seeing that under the 80.0% threshold we saw last week.

The Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) is down 0.7% at $118.72, the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG) is down 0.7% at $35.45, the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF is down 0.35% at $38.45, and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) is down 0.4% at $25.40.

At least this week had gains on the three top components. It’s better than what we had been seeing…

Lykkelig …

The Department of Energy has just released its weekly oil inventories data and those wanting stable prices from oil data may be disappointed. We are watching the key ETFs around the news via the Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH), the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG), the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) reactions based upon the supply data. NYMEX WTI Crude is up $0.89 per barrel at $80.03 at 10:38 AM EST after the news.

Crude stockpiles fell by 887,000 barrels (to 336.789 million barrels) versus a Dow Jones target of -600,000. Frankly, anything negative was going to be a disappointment for us. And it only gets worse from there…

Gasoline stockpiles fell by 1.755 million barrels (to 209.08 million barrels) versus a Dow Jones target of +100,000 barrels. We would have been disappointed by anything negative on that figure. Distillates fell by 328,000 barrels to about 167.4 million barrels.

The big problem in the equation is refineries. The refining capacity run rate over the last week was 79.44%. The reading the week before was 79.93% and Dow Jones had a target of 79.8%. We were looking for the reading to get back above 80%.

The wild card in the last week was Hurricane Ida, which landed as Tropical Storm Ida. That may account for much of this, but all in all this data is heading in the wrong direction of you want to see stable oil and gas prices.

Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) is down 0.55% at $124.76, the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG) is down 1.4% at $36.39, the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF is up 0.74% at $40.78 and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) is up 0.8% at $26.95.

Archaeology has always been associated with adventure and grand tales of who’s been where and

Archaeology has always been associated with adventure and grand tales of who’s been where and collected what. Indiana Jones inevitably comes to mind as do other treasure hunters or the materials they might find. The exotic and the childhood dreams of glory draw us all. And yet, in reality, there is a lot more dirt and a few more mosquitoes than the films were willing to grant their audience.

I have to say that I absolutely love my job. I have never seen an ounce of gold nor have I been to the jungle (yet) but I do love digging in the dirt (whether I recover anything or not). And for a secret bit of archaeological insight, you don’t find artifacts, you recover them. In order to ‘ find’ something, it had to have been lost.

Most artifacts recovered in my line of work are nails. I have currently cataloged well over three hundred nails from a site that I worked at for a mere three days this summer. If you love nails, you might consider archaeology as a career path. They are measured from head to tip and the length of their shank indicates their pennyweight or the amount that was paid per nail. They were sold in bulk prior to the current sell-by-number mode and the average weight was used to determine about how much would be paid.

But enough of that. Data is only so interesting to the passerby.

You want dirt?

I had plenty of that this summer.

Our first forays into the area that we were looking at were fairly uneventful. We began with foot surveys and then, once we’d figured out the scope of the area we were going to try and excavate, we started to bring in our gear by mule. Not old fashion mules mind you, but fourwheelers designed to carry up to four people plus gear. Trust me, that’s all the mule you want to deal with. Sites have their own problems.

Just so you have an idea of what kind of things we drag up bear infested mountains and through woods swarming with mosquitoes…

Right, and that doesn’t include the buckets, the actionpackers, the paperwork, or the copious amounts of dope (for the bugs) that we hauled. Where the mules couldn’t go, we carried it by hand.

The glory is for those of us who revel in hard work and getting our hands deep into soil that hasn’t been touched in thousands of years. There’s danger, sure, if you’re out in the middle of nowhere which, in Alaska, there’s a fairly good chance you will be. But if cautionary steps are taken, the danger is avoidable. Bears are easily scared by loud noise, most moose are fairly easily spooked, and caribou (while fairly unintelligent creatures) are pretty easily convinced to vacate the area.

Sites aren’t always easily identifiable. For instance, this:

Doesn’t really look like a site does it? Well it’s not actually, but it could be… The fact of the matter is that determining whether there’s a site here would involve test pits, local tales, or aerial photographs along with good old fashioned ground surveying. I’m just making a point, I suppose, that not all sites look like Machu Picchu. Sometimes the hints are a lot more subtle.

So my first excavation of the summer was a burned cabin from the early forties that was associated with early Alaskan mining. You might wonder why archaeologists were involved. Or maybe not. We were asked to do the work both as a teaching tool for high school students (through the Alaska Summer Research Academy) and for one of the archaeological databases that most states maintain through various land programs. The National Park Service and the Bureau of Land Management are the major two. Our purpose was to primarily not for recovery but to determine the state of the site itself. The site was comprised of several cabins, some of which were still standing and others of which were only foundation impressions covered in chin high fireweed.

As you might imagine we didn’t have to dig very deep to hit rock bottom (so to speak). The majority of the data lay within the top 15cm of soil.

This was one of the more interesting shots, where on the right you can see some of the burned planks that may have made up a small porch. Generally, the pits varied depending on what area of the cabin we were in. Window glass, roofing nails, and bottle glass were among the more popular recoveries while others hit pay dirt with a hatchet (sans shaft), a pennyweight for measuring gold, a bit of beadwork that was melted together beautifully or a key that one can only assume was for a chest, the only remains of which were a few hinges and a handful of zippers and buttons.

For the most part, this is a decent representation of what we gathered:

I was overwhelmed with the number of nails that I would be required to measure and catalog. There’s a lot you can tell about a nail. Has it been used or is it straight at the head and along the shank? Was it bent and used as a hook? What kind of nail is it? Roofing, finishing? Was it hand cut, machine cut? Is it wire? Goodness, there’s just so much to know. People write academic papers on such things as few people even think about when they apply hammer to nail. I have certainly never thought about who would come after me to dig up all the remnants of my short existence, but one day they might and who knows what they’ll find out about me.

For my second excursion of the summer, I and a coworker of mine were flown up into the Brooks Range to relocate sites that were mapped out in the seventies. Needless to say, they didn’t have GPS units and their mapping techniques don’t always match up to ours. The topographic maps of the time were accurate enough as were their triangulations, however, when transferring these to satellite imagery our GPS often times told us that we had just walked across a lake or over a mountain. Due to this, we were as much trying to locate a site as we were any specific site.

But with scenery as gorgeous as this:

We didn’t mind walking around too much. Just for the record though, that haze isn’t mist or fog, it’s smoke. Interior Alaska gets it every summer from the mass of forest fires we get. It delayed a lot of flights this summer and cut a quite a few trips short.

Much of what we did was survey, we didn’t dig test pits (we didn’t need to because it was primarily on the surface) or collect any artifacts, this was merely a search and report excursion. We wanted to know how accurate the data from thirty-some-odd years ago was and if there was anything that they might have missed. All those flags were to help locate where artifact scatters were which might lead us to conclude that we had in fact found our site. We would then record anything we saw (what kind of artifact, what the vegetation looked like, was the ground disturbed by animals, etc) , take photographs of the area for relocation purposes, and input our data into the GPS. What we found stayed where it was and we moved on to the next site.

Sometimes it’s easy and sites find you.

The ‘rock’ in the foreground is a simple Inuksuq which were used to indicate areas of plenty for hunting or in this case caribou. One close encounter led to my coworker growing antlers and a very confused yearling. He ran off once he decided that we were too weird to be his relatives.

That giant black ridge in the background is chert, the primary rock type used for tool making in this (or any) area. Chert is plentiful in most of Alaska and can be used to make any number of tools from scrapers the size of your hand to microblades that are sharp enough (after several thousand years) to slice your finger open. Personally my favorites are made from obsidian though, of which there are only about 8 known sources.

A lot of what we located looked like this:

There aren’t any obvious tools and to most this looks a bit like a pile of rocks, which it is, but there are a few modified if you know what you’re looking for. The darker rocks are all chert flakes, some of them have lighter edges or striations. These are all the product of human modification and discard. These aren’t tools for the most part, they are simply what was left after the tool was finished. Obviously these are fairly large chunks and if the source of the rock weren’t so hugely visible, one might deduct from this that there is a source nearby.

More obvious tools we found are these:

.

.

A utilized flake and a partial biface.

These are more typically thought of when discussing archaeology but are still not the first thought. More often then not the most commonly found tools are arrowheads dug up in the farmer’s fields. My grandfather had a pretty nice collection of them. Here in Alaska, the more common kind are likewise deeply embedded generally requiring up to a meters digging to retrieve. But with high mountain winds, 9 solid months of snow cover, and a bountiful source right next door, these sites have remained uncovered and virtually untouched for thousands of years.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Well, except by little fellows like this one

Who’s den was right underneath one of our sites.

We finally got snowed out (in August) on our third day after locating 37 sites. Only about 20 of which were originally documented. Despite having to leave early, the trip was successful and we returned to the lab with much paperwork to complete.

When we’re not out gallivanting around the state, we work here:

At the weirdest looking building I’ve ever encountered, The Museum of the North in Fairbanks. I just have to say that the low tonight is supposed to be negative 47 degrees Fahrenheit. And man, I’m already shivering.

Jeraldo wanted nothing more than to be an armadillo. He had seen them on their family’s trip from Mexico, through Texas to Oklahoma where their mother’s brother, Papillo, lived with his four dogs, two wives, Eline and Enerva, and three shotguns. Jeraldo’s mother had stopped at the first sighting between Austin and Round Rock and they all sat there, amazed at the armored creature as it used its extended claws to dig a hole ten times its size near the side of the road. His sister, Adalia, at only three years old, sat perplexed at the two foot long alien gracing their presence and not being able to hold it in any longer, screamed at the top of her lungs with roll upon roll of gleeful laughter.

“Look at how it moves,” his mother had said. “It knows that it is safe with us so it keeps digging as if we are not even here. But if it is scared, do you know what it does?” She had asked this with an upward cadence at the end of her question, turned completely around in the front seat to see her children’s faces. Seeing that her children did not know the answer, she quietly told them. “You see, if it gets too scared and it can’t run away, the little armadillo tucks its head and its legs into its shell, places its tail next to its head and pulls itself into the tightest ball you can imagine. That way, no one can get in and hurt it, you see?” Adalia had squealed with excitement. “Mami, I want to see the ball animal. Can we make it ball?” Her mother had said no, but not accepting that as a viable answer, Adalia had rolled down the window and thrown a plastic cube at it, smacking it right on the back of the shell. “Dios mio, Adalia!” her mother had yelled but the creature simply looked up, smelled the cube that had fallen to its side and continued digging. Jeraldo just shook his head, looked at the creature. Sensing something, the armadillo had paused, looked up from its ever-expanding hole, its nose covered in dirt and torn roots. For a full minute, it met Jeraldo’s eyes and they sat, watching each other, communicating child to creature, the kind of communication that adults have more often than not lost in the ridiculous toil of taxes and 8-5 workdays. Through eons of time they traveled, creature leading child through the phantasms of moments when man lived in unison with his surroundings, through the soil burrows of the armadillo past and present, across dens where their children lay awaiting their meals, into the depths of the Earth where only silence reigns and the warm bodies of armadillo mothers wrap themselves tightly around their babies. Safety, warmth, history, love. Jeraldo had sensed all of it, caught it and sent it coursing through his veins. The armadillo had lifted its head higher, curled its lips into a tender smile and all the days when Jeraldo felt alone as if no one understood him were gone, all the days of crying in the back of the school yard because the other boys were teasing him melted away, all the moments at home when he hated his father for leaving him, for leaving them, disappeared. He had put his palms to the window, pressed them tightly against the glass, wished that it would burst, that he could leave and live with his newly found friend and just get away. The armadillo had shaken its head and begun digging again.

Their mother had started the car again and Adalia had fallen fast asleep. “Are you okay, hijo?” she had asked, looking in the rearview mirror. “Si,” Jeraldo had curtly answered but he hadn’t been. He had watched the armadillo one last time, taken in the claws, the pink snout, the furry belly. Most of all, he had studied the shell, the nine lines across the top, the dark grooves.

As they had driven away towards Round Rock, he had begun constructing his own armor and had looked back to his friend one last time who had stopped digging to watch them drive away.

Do we care more about the popularity of our content than the advancement of our industry?

In order to appeal to as many people as possible, professional bloggers have to make sure that their content can be consumed by readers of different levels of experience. The beginners have to be able understand what they’re talking about.

The issue is then, what about the more experienced readers? When the “thought leaders” limit the depth of their thoughts and advice, experienced readers get to a point where they can’t learn any more from reading blogs.

The growth of the industry is halted.

I think that blogging is slowly becoming the heart and voice of so many industries as more and more professionals are turning to blogging to learn, share and grow. If we don’t help them grow beyong the “beginner” level, the advancement of the industry will suffer.

It’s not just blogging. Look at conferences. Same speakers, same topics, same shit every time. Makes sense…if a conference wanted to dig deeper, “beginners” wouldn’t find it valuable. Less money to be made.

Will this problem become even greater as blogs grow in popularity and influence? Could young and upcoming professionals become so used to learning and researching with blogs and social networks, that they’ll forgot how to conduct research using other methods?

For contrast, look at the science world. My friend Jon just started a blog that focuses on bridging the gap between the ivory tower and the common man. This is because when scientists and academics write about their work, they don’t write to get more readers, they write to be acknowledged for their innovations within their industry. They don’t dumb it down at all. Sure it created a disconnect with the common man, but science continues to grow and innovate as a result.

If you’re used to information always being brought to you, it’s very hard to go back to seeking it out. When there’s nothing left to learn from blogs, where do they go to continue to learn?

Help me out here…share your thoughts.

It’s apparently all I’m capable of anymore. I had all weekend (except for when I saw The Good Body, John Krasinski, went to church, and watch the Patriots kick some Dolphin ass), and yet I did no homework.

Now I have to post for some online discussion for my Rhetorical Tradition class and I have to copy out my Spanish vocab from last week (although it could have been much worse, and I don’t have to do the online work till this afternoon). But the kicker is that I have to write a short story. Now, I have known about this story for over a week and that it had to be workshopped in Tuesday’s class and was supposed to be posted by noon on Sunday. But I put it off. I mean, I tried to tell my professor I knew it wouldn’t be up by then, but then I went so far as to come up with an elaborate lie by posting a dead attachment online os no one could read my blank page and I could just blame my computer. But rather than actually writing the story to have ready to post “when I realized it was wrong before,” I didn’t.

Instead I perused Perez Hilton, played that Harry Potter game on Facebook, organized some of my room, watched Keeping Up With The Kardashians (which I never watch because I have this lukewarm hate towards them), and then watch Hitch.

But now, like 2 people posted after me saying my link didn’t work, and I have class from 10 till 1, and I’m going to have to have a kickass story when I post it with a ton of apologies right after that.

UGH. Why do I always dig these holes for myself?

We are here specifically for VOLLEYBALL players. We are here to not only increase explosive power and verticals, but to help athletes address the specific physical demands of volleyball jumping.

There are many unique aspects to the volleyball vertical. For example, how many other sports require you to jump your highest perform an explosive upper body movement and then completely stop your body and forward momentum before you run into a net?

We are not claiming that other sports do not have physical demands, but rather pointing out that volleyball has extreme demands with regards to jumping (explosiveness), landing (force absorption), rotational torque (production and deceleration) and many other demanding movements.

As a small company, our goal is not to help everyone. We are here to establish our program as the standard of excellence in volleyball jumping improvement and prove it by the results of our athletes. While anyone can argue about methodoligies and training protocols, a 6 inch increase in vertical jump can’t be argued. We will be posting case studies of various Arizona volleyball athletes throughout the valley and will let teh results speak for themselves.

If you would like to participate in one of our case studies, let us know. (Acceptance as a case study participant will be based upon an initial assessment)

The latest weekly inventories data from Department of Energy in crude and oil products is adding more support and adding fuel to a fire in the commodity rally today. It looks like we are back to larger draw-downs that expected. We are watching the Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH), the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG), the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) reactions based upon the supply data. NYMEX WTI Crude is now up $1.13 at $80.73 as of 10:36 AM EST.

The Department of Energy showed that crude oil inventories fell by 3.93 million barrels to 335.9 million barrels. Dow Jones had a build expected by 1.4 million barrels, and all we were looking for was anything above flat.

Gasoline inventories fell by 287,000 barrels to 208.27 million barrels. Dow Jones had estimates at -100,000 yet we were looking for a reading of flat or thereabouts.

Distillates fell by 378,000 barrels.

Refinery capacity went south again, another disappointment. That was 80.6%, down from 81.76% a week ago and under a Dow Jones estimate of 81.7%. We were looking for anything flat or above last week.

The Oil Services HOLDRs (NYSE: OIH) is up 0.9% at $121.96, the Ultra Oil & Gas ProShares (NYSE: DIG) is up 1.7% at $34.83, the United States Oil (NYSE: USO) ETF is up 0.9% at $40.98 and the iPath S&P GSCI Crude Oil Total Return Index ETN (NYSE: OIL) is up 0.85% at $27.10.

Sept. 22, 2009 the lake house

           Jimmy Wright

Today, I would like for you to spend time Reading My Word and being in My Word. I have things I would like to Share with you and Show you, some things that are contained there, in the Written Word – Expressions of Me – Word Pictures.

Just as it’s easy for Me to talk to you each morning, it’s that easy for Me to show and teach you things in My Word, Things that need to be taught to My people, Things that need to be Enlightened and Clarified. Some things have confused people because of the way they were taught. Other things lie hidden, there for anyone to see, yet hidden until I allow it to be Revealed.

I know in times past you liked to dig around in My Word, looking for these Nuggets, looking for the Truth and Understandings contained therein.

Well my son, it’s time you do that again. You have seen things written and heard things spoken and taught, that you knew by My Word, that there was a slight misunderstanding.

I’ve Shown you things many years past, that you Studied by the Leading of My Spirit, and the people didn’t understand the relevance of the teaching, even though you were following My Lead, Yet in recent days even years you have heard and seen those same teachings and revelations being taught or in books and now being accepted.

Don’t be discouraged, Learn from what I’m Showing you. Follow Me, Listen to Me and Do what I Say, thus you’ll be prepared to Do the Things that I ask you to do.

Learn from what I have Spoken to you This Day, for there are many Lessons to be Learned from this, Lessons to know in your knower, too many to be penned down at this time, on this Paper! Page turn:

The answer is No! I don’t stop talking to you just because we come to the end of a page, for there are more pages and I could Fill volumes of pages with the Things I would like to Share with you………..And I Will !!!

I planted my first vegetables today. Before planting I dug three wheelbarrow loads of manure into my five square metre patch. It’s so full of shit now that I have to move the surface bits aside as I plant. No more nasty maggot incidences, but I did find a lot of worms. It reminded me of the annual races we used to have at my primary school in Trentham. Worm races. The idea is to take along your biggest and fastest worm. At each heat, the worms are lined up on a wooden board behind the starting line, painted on at one end. They are sprayed with water and everyone crowds around and cheers as they slide over each other towards nowhere in particular. You can’t train worms to race. Their sense of timing and direction is terrible and their only asset is their distaste for water. Occasionally, one or two will go straight ahead and reach the finish line, these are rare and sought after animals. The winner goes into the next round.

One of the worms I found today would have been a perfect racing worm. She was half-way out of a cow pat, waving her head around like a woman with a pet peeve. She was a goer.

I bought some silver beet seedlings yesterday after (ruefully) betting on the Melbourne Cup and I have planted them in one long row. There are eight seedlings in all. They have been flattened by the wind and the stress of replantation, but if the weather is good and the slugs or rabbits don’t get to them they’ll be standing straight soon enough, their roots digging downwards into the soil.
