We love Pete Cashmore’s insight into the future landscape of social media.

Next year’s Twitter? It’s Foursquare

By Pete Cashmore, Special to CNN, November 19, 2009 1:18 p.m. EST

Editor’s note: Pete Cashmore is founder and CEO of Mashable, a popular blog about social media. He is writing a weekly column about social networking and tech for CNN.com.

London, England (CNN) – As 2009 draws to a close, with Twitter undoubtedly this year’s media darling and Facebook continuing on its path to global domination, you may wonder which social-media service will become tech’s poster boy in 2010.

Among the Web’s early adopter set, the answer is nearly unanimous: Foursquare.

While the technology landscape is ever-changing, I’d argue that Foursquare already has aligned itself to become next year’s mainstream hit.

The Twitter connection

Birthed by the team that brought us the mobile social network Dodgeball (acquired by Google in 2005 and later shuttered), the location-based mobile startup serves a simple purpose: It lets an individual share his or her location with a group of friends.

Foursquare ventures beyond utility, however: It’s a virtual game in which participants earn badges for checking in at various locations; those that check in most become a venue’s “mayor.” By all accounts, this mechanism is as addictive as Twitter, Facebook or checking your e-mail on a BlackBerry.

Originally launched as an iPhone application and seeded by the young early-adopter set in cities such as New York and San Francisco, the site’s founders were able to leap from a ready-made springboard: Twitter.

With users’ “check-ins” being posted to the messaging service, Foursquare was able to gain a foothold in much the same way YouTube built its lead from videos embedded in MySpace pages.

The parallels with Twitter are numerous. As technology early adopter and popular blogger Robert Scoble wrote in September: “Go back three years ago. Twitter was being used by the same crowd that is playing with Foursquare today.”

The similarities don’t stop there: Twitter first took hold at Austin’s South By Southwest festival in 2007; Foursquare made its debut at SXSW 2009. Members of both founding teams have previously built successful social startups; both those startups were sold to Google.

The two companies share investors, too: Union Square Ventures is a backer, while Twitter inventor Jack Dorsey made an angel investment in Foursquare. Other notable investors include the founders of Digg and Delicious, and famed angel investor Ron Conway. Union Square Ventures’ Fred Wilson observed that Foursquare’s first round financing was “among the most competitive early round financings I’ve seen in a long time.”

Foursquare’s power play: Platform for developers, retailers

This week Foursquare debuted the singular piece that launched Twitter into the stratosphere: an API. This application programming interface allows third-party developers to build anything they desire on top of Foursquare’s location-based social network.

It’s been shown time and again that once these ecosystems gain momentum, potential competitors face an arduous task. From Flickr to Google Maps to Twitter and beyond, it’s clear that early critical mass — having enough users and applications to make a service invaluable — sets the stage for a landslide victory.

Google’s Android, entering the mobile platform wars long after the iPhone App Store had served up a veritable smorgasbord of apps to its army of users, is evidence of the chicken-and-egg problem that arises for new competitors: What’s the incentive for users and developers to switch to a smaller, less visible platform once a leader has emerged?

With the launch of its API, Foursquare looks set to capitalize on this “rich get richer” phenomenon before others can make a play. Foursquare is doing more than wooing users and developers, however: It’s also courting local bars and restaurants.

“Foursquare for Businesses” is a platform for retailers wishing to offer special deals to Foursquare users: Check in to frozen desert maker Tasti D-Lite at two venues in New York, for instance, and you’re eligible for a discount.

Competitors abound

Nonetheless, multiple players are vying for victory in the location-based services market. Between Gowalla, Loopt, Brightkite and Google’s Latitude, Foursquare will by no means have an easy ride. While Gowalla debuted an early version at SXSW 2009 alongside Foursquare, both Loopt and Brightkite have a head start.

All of these services, I’d argue, lack the highly addictive game play that appears to have Foursquare users hooked.

Google is undoubtedly the 800-pound gorilla, but the fastidiously numbers-driven search engine has proven time and again that it cannot grasp social-networking dynamics — from Orkut to Friend Connect (its Facebook Connect competitor) to its failure to turn Google Video into a YouTube competitor.

One company may unwittingly squash Foursquare in its infancy: Twitter itself. The very service that propelled Foursquare to prominence is rapidly building out its location-based features, with a location API that directly challenges Foursquare. Twitter already has the critical mass of users and ecosystem of eager developers. If it executes correctly, the service could leave Foursquare in the dust.

In Foursquare’s favor: Young, fast-growing startups such as Twitter often find their engineering teams overstretched simply trying to achieve scale. Twitter has added less than a dozen new features since launch as preventing frequent downtime has become its greatest challenge.

Meanwhile, the overlap in investors means the Twitter-Foursquare relationship is unlikely to turn sour. Foursquare may network its way to the top in 2010 or find itself lost in an increasingly competitive landscape. Early adopters are betting on the former.

Nebraska's jobless rate remained stable at 4.9 percent during October. That is less than half that of the national rate, which continued to climb, reaching 10.2 percent.

Omaha, despite adding 1,346 jobs during the month, saw its unemployment improve slightly to 4.8 percent from 4.9 percent in September. Compared to last year, there are almost 10,000 fewer jobs in the Omaha metropolitan area, which includes Council Bluffs.

There were 483 jobs added statewide, and private education and health services continued to be the only sector to experience job growth, according to the Nebraska Department of Labor.

"Nebraska's economy appears to be starting on the road to recovery," said Catherine Lang, Nebraska labor commissioner. "We continue to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country, and the numbers of layoffs and business closures have started to slow down as well."

Mark Grieb’s business suffered when consumers cut their spending, grew slowly despite the recession and scored a sizable gain among consumers trying to save money.

All three trends during 2009.

Grieb is regional president for AAA Nebraska. The motor club’s three lines of business in many ways reflect the economic journey of the past year: Its travel business was depressed, auto insurance grew slowly and membership sales gained 10 percent as more people sought discounts and bought towing protection rather than new cars.

//

That’s why it’s noteworthy that Grieb, like many other business operators in Omaha, expects 2010 to show some improvement but still to lag behind the city’s best years, economy-wise.

A poll of 490 members of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, being presented today at the chamber’s annual economic outlook luncheon, shows that most of those responding expect that Omaha will at least be stable in employment, capital spending and overall economic growth in 2010.

Grieb, who is a chamber director, agrees, and he’s even adding a few jobs after cutting some positions in the past year.

“I think we’re going to have a decent 2010, but it’s a recovery year, without a doubt,” he said. “I would say we’re going to see cautious spending into 2010. We will not see spending similar to some of our better years.”

The chamber asks its members the same questions each year. Compared with the 2008 poll, this year’s responses, between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15, are tempered with a dose of recession-based reality.

Last year 35 percent of the chamber members in the poll said they planned to add employees in 2009, but only 19 percent actually have added people. While only 9 percent said last year they expected to cut jobs in 2009, so far this year 40 percent have made personnel cuts.

Only 11 percent expected decreased sales in 2009, but so far this year sales are down for 50 percent of them. Last year 32 percent said they would increase their capital spending in 2009, but only 22 percent actually did it.

As a result, their projections for 2010 are somewhat tempered: 28 percent expect to add employees, and 27 percent expect to increase capital spending.

Yet 54 percent expect Omaha’s economy to be stronger in 2010 than it has been this year, and 58 percent expect higher sales in 2010. And nearly half expect the economy to strengthen next year in Nebraska and nationwide, too.

Among business operators, said Eric Thompson, an economist with the University of Nebraska at Omaha, “I think there’s a natural tendency to be optimistic. They weren’t fooling themselves. They were maybe hoping for the best, and this year maybe with a little more reason.”

As the economy bottoms out, Thompson said, you get conflicting signals: a good inflation report, a weak jobs report; growth in one industry, a decline in another. But there’s reason for some optimism for Omaha and Nebraska, he said.

“Nebraska may have entered the current recession late, but the state should exit the recession on time or even earlier than other states,” he said. Agriculture and manufacturing tied to agriculture delayed the state’s downturn and will help its rebound, he said.

Jason Henderson, economist at the Omaha branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Mo., expects growth in 2010 but said it “may not be strong enough to spur robust job gains or income growth.”

Consumer spending will be dampened by high debt, increased savings and unemployment, he said. On the positive side, that means “relatively subdued” inflationary pressures, Henderson said.

Some businesses don’t depend directly on consumers but nonetheless are subject to economic pressures.

Bob Hinson, vice president for government programs at Northrop Grumman’s Bellevue location, said his company’s employment gains next year will depend on winning competitive contracts with Department of Defense agencies, and the agencies’ spending depends on federal budgets.

“We have made adjustments to become and remain competitive,” he said. About 600 people work at the Bellevue location, a number reduced slightly this year by some retirements and cuts to fit the work available.

Adding jobs will depend on winning and keeping contracts with the Air Force and other agencies, most of them at Offutt Air Force Base and some in other locations nationally, Hinson said. “We just have to position ourselves to try to win those contracts.”

The chamber’s outlook report says the city is “primed for growth” after this year’s declines of 2.6 percent in retail sales, 1.8 percent in employment and 8.5 percent in residential housing construction permits. Yet more than 130 businesses announced new locations or expansions this year, the chamber said.

Overall, Thompson said, business owners may not add many jobs until at least the second quarter of 2010. “I’m not saying it’s going to be their greatest year, but at least better at mid-2010 than in 2009.”

Questions: Hello brother , thank you for the timely answer. This is the text I wanted you to translate into English if you can please:

I was also wondering if you might know the text comes from hadith or Quran, and if you might be able to explain definition of taqqia to me a littl.

Thank you again , God Bless you and your family.

The answer:

Thank you for your important question.

First: you have to know that the existing interpretations of the Qoran includes two types . The first type is some non-Muslim interpretations of the Koran. Those interpretations are wrong Because they relied on the Arabic language and Islam which distorted and by clerics ( imams ). The second type, it is interpretations of imams and all incorrect . The imams have been manipulating the meanings of the Qoran for several reasons such as :

To prove that there was a Saudi Prophet named Mohammed .Of course, the real Prophet Muhammad, was from the Holy Land and was united with the Christians and the Jews against the majority of Arabs being infidels and hypocrites and against civilization, and they can not live without wars. This subject will be detailed in a special article

To be the removal of women from society and public life , possible

To fight each other

To prove , for example, that who does not believe in the doctrine of imams, which they invented the name of God, is a ” Kafi ” Infidel

To encourage their blind followers to fight Christians and Jews and the confiscation of their property, rape and enslavement of their women

Therefore, the world must prevent all their interpretations and writings of the threat posed to people and global security.

Second: concerning the verses:

The vers which says

According to all imams translations, its :

004.015
YUSUFALI: If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way.
PICKTHAL: As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).
SHAKIR: And as for those who are guilty of an indecency from among your women, call to witnesses against them four (witnesses) from among you; then if they bear witness confine them to the houses until death takes them away or Allah opens some way for them.
KHALIFA: Those who commit adultery among your women, you must have four witnesses against them, from among you. If they do bear witness, then you shall keep such women in their homes until they die, or until GOD creates an exit for them.

The The Noble Quran
Published by Dar-us-Salam Publications

15. And those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse, take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them (i.e. women) to houses until death comes to them or Allh ordains for them some (other) way.

         Clarification

Of course, the foregoing interpretations are wrong and barbaric and God can not be barbaric. However, The imams distorted the meanings of the vers by forgering the meaning of the following s words in verse:

(nisaikum – نِّسَآئِكُمْ) which they translated to ” Women ” . Its not true because women in the Quran named (Untha - انثى – Famale ) . Also the word (nisaikum - نِّسَآئِكُمْ) is plural and has no singular. While (Untha - انثى – Famale ) has plural ( Inath - اناث – females(

So, the real meaning of (nisaikum - نِّسَآئِكُمْ) is the females and males .

( فَأَمْسِكُوهُنَّ فِي الْبُيُوتِ حَتَّىٰ يَتَوَفَّاهُنَّ الْمَوْتُ - faamsikoohunna fee albuyooti hatta yatawaffahunna almawtu) which they translated to (confine them to the houses until death take them ) ! Of course, that interpretation and manipulation in verse reflects the obsession with sexuality, and unfairness to women’s. The original Quran asserts that (albuyooti) does not means houses. But it means the systems. For example the economic system and judicial system .

Unreasonable and illogical:

First, If we have several millions of women who do lewdness , can we prison each one in her house and put a guard on it throughout the life? Though those who do not have houses and sleep in the streets, Where she or they would be imprisoned? What if her parents! dies ! Will she remain a prisoner in the house alone? How could any sane person believe in such ideology or in the imams stupid explanations !

Secondly, that God is just and can not be unjust and racist. God is equated in the penalty between women and men. For example , murderer killer, whether a woman or a man the penalty is the same. Therefore, it is not reasonable to order the imprisonment of women to die, and to forgive the man that the act of lewdness. Because according to the imams interpretations, the second verse says:

(4:16 The two who commit it from amongst you, then you shall reprimand them. If they repent and amend, then leave them alone. God is Redeemer, Compassionate )

As well as women into place to stop doing bad things. shall we reject her repentance?

The real meaning

The real translation of the verse is:

4:15 If any man or wopmen or a group of women and men spread sexual immorality or lewdness in the society, it is required that the appropriate court takes four honorable and reliable witnesses. if they testify ( their testimony must corroborates with other evidence (12:26)) , confine them according to the judicial systems . This confinement would be for an indefinite period, unless such person seek the Way of Allah, such as repentance and amendment, or the singles among them get honorably married. )

Then , another verse, which came immediately after the verse above, explained what to do with the person who repents. It asserts :

(16) If a couple spreads such immorality or lewdness in the society, both of them shall be punished by the appropriate court of law. If they repent and amend, leave them alone. Allah is the Acceptor of repentance, Merciful.)

Interpretation of another verse

17:32 Do not come near to adultery, for, it is an abomination and an evil way

This verse shows that adultery is very serious and so, keep away from adultery and adulterers. That everything in it. For example, you advice your son and says , this person is a bad and very dangerous and criminal. Do not deal with him because it will lead to your loss

The meaning of “taqqia”

To “ Tataqqi “ someone or something, means to protect yourself . For example :

( “faittaqoo alnnara ” Then guard yourselves against the Fire… ) . Thus, you eat so as not to die of hunger or sick, and maintenance car so as not to hamper. Another example, fear of the plane crash, it must be checked and maintained constantly and even before to take-off. And they used to say “ Prevention is better than cure “ . More , let us ask the following question:

How is the prevention of terrorism?

The Koran confirms that the real terrorist is a human being an infidel. His or her ideology is the refusal of peace and enslaved and cuts the hands of thieves, and wants to apply the imams sharia which they created in the name of Allah. So, according to Allah, the only way to prevention of the imams and mousques terrorism is to eliminate the imams official ideology , Prevention and destruction of their books, shut down Islamic centers, to prevent them from supervising the teaching of children….

Thank you for your question and God bless you

Every things nice with a little sugar and spice. Isn’t it? Ohhh yes, it is. Cowgirl Chocolates

Every things nice with a little sugar and spice. Isn’t it? Ohhh yes, it is. Cowgirl Chocolates can prove it.

When the package arrived from Cowgirl Chocolates, and I opened the box and saw the gorgeous red box inside, I didn’t want to open it! It was so pretty, wrapped in ribbon, adorned with the sweet little star on top. Being the country girl I am, I was in love. Marilyn, the head cowgirl over there, has great taste!

This is chocolate with a kick. Whatever your chocolate need be. Ladies, we all have a need for chocolate at one time or another. How many occasions can you think of? Cowgirl Chocolates creates a “just because” chocolate occasion, sporting the spiced up flavors that’s sure to make your toes curl!

After I finally opened my pretty little red box, my husband walked by and nabbed a piece of candy. He just happened to pick up Buckin’ Hot Habanero Caramel, HA! He ran with it. Straight to the sink for water. That’ll surely teach him to nab my goodies again. Now the mix of chocolate and spices are good, really good! But not all will set you on a running trip to the waterin’ hole. My daughter and I got to taste some of the Cowgirl Chocolates that didn’t have a kick. One of our favorites were Raspberry lemonade dark chocolate, an old cowgirl recipe blended to perfection with raspberry, lemon and deep dark chocolate. And on my “to get” list is Sarsaparilla Milk Chocolate, milk chocolate swirled with sarsaparilla (root beer) from the good ol’ days.

Why don’t you wander on over to the Flavor Guide, and see what you can find that you’ll like. With or without a kick.

This has nothing in particular to do with Apple (AAPL), but it’s very 2.0.

We spent much of last week at a conference in New York City called Web 2.0 Expo — a celebration of the “next generation Web” where one of the centers of attention was the giant Twitter screen set directly behind the keynote speakers that showed what the audience was tweeting about whomever was onstage.

The speakers included a typical mix of Web celebrities, including O’Reilly Media’s Tim O’Reilly, Digg’s Kevin Rose and Jay Adelson, author Douglas Rushkoff, Flikr co-founder Caterina Fake and White House chief technology officer Beth Noveck.

But the hit of the conference — judging from the laughter, the applause and the tweets — was Baratunde Thurston, Web & Politics editor at The Onion.

His talk was entitled “There’s a #Hashtag for That” and I’ve discovered that it’s a kind of Twitter touchstone. The audience at the Javits Center thought it was knee-slapping hilarious. People who don’t quite get what Twitter is for — like my wife — are even more mystified than they were before they watched it.

The video is posted below the fold. We’d love to hear what you think.

Thurston tweets as @baratunde. The hashtag for Web 2.0 Expo is #w2e.

Have you ever got a chance to drive a supercar? If yes you have had one of the best experiences you

Have you ever got a chance to drive a supercar? If yes you have had one of the best experiences you will ever have in your life.

Now imagine and co-relate what is the most common thing between social media and a supercar, See most of these dazzling cars have 2 seats same goes with Social media as here no matter what you are a brand or an offline/online influencer when you engage with people you have to do it individually so you are the driver of this supercar and the other guy is the co-seater.

Its simple if you are a good driver and don’t give bumps in the ride, you will get recognized for your skills very soon as your partners would spread the word for you, This is the nature of social media as well as if you are adding value by what you share, your personal brand has to spread further.

Hey we are talking about supercars right, am sure most of you have your own favorites so before going for a ride you need to make sure that you have chosen the car which suits you the best, here a few suggestions Porsche aka Twitter, Lamborghini aka LinkedIn, Ferrari aka Facebook, Bugatti aka Digg, Aston Martin aka StumbleUpon and the list goes on and if you have super rich knowledge you can drive more than 1 car.

Its very important to understand which social media channel would work out the best for your brand and that can be decided your approach towards people if you prefer a traditional way of talking LinkedIn makes it for you,if you have an attitude of a blogger its a major possibility that you choose twitter.

Whatever you drive make sure you understand this -

“It takes 8,460 bolts to assemble an automobile, and one nut to scatter it all over the road.” ~Author Unknown

Just one important lesson out of this no big deal, you have to be consistent in your performance.

So we got into the social media supercar and we are listening an awesome sound of the viral buzz created around it, lets get on with the gears and cruise through.

• 1st Gear »

This has to be one of the best things in social media in the first gear it gives you a chance to trace your niche as what is that you really want to do with it, do you want to measure social analytics thus your influence, do you want to make friends, do you want to become a social media rock star or you just want to be a student of a particular subject and gather and share information on that.

The first gear is noisy as you would receive advice from a lot of people on what to do with social media but you need to follow your heart and then listen to people who really make sense.

• 2nd Gear »

Now as you have chosen what do to try your best to get yourself fully loaded with knowledge from sources which you feel trustworthy from your heart,Read blogs not specifically from your niche but of your mindset as in if you are a marketing guy you can get great ideas from a Food or a wine blog.

• 3rd Gear »

In the third gear you are at a stage where in you have all the knowledge required to create stuff for your community here am talking about things like blogs, podcasts, presentations which can easily add value to your relationship with the people you are networking.

• 4th Gear »

Now you are well aware of what you are doing and its fun driving now, But whats the most important thing to get this fun going? its consistency in everything which you do in the world of social media yes everything, the things which you learn, share and create should be consistent and representing your personality as you established it from the starting.

When we have talked about the acceleration here we have to understand the fact that there will be circumstances where you have to slow down a bit and thus get back to second or third gear and its almost the same for social media as well because you have to go back to learn and to understand what other people in your community are talking about no matter how good you are at creating stuff.

So for most of you who still have not tasted a supercar drive try social media and you would love it once you try to relate them.

” muslim undkomma denna ruttna miljön (i icke islamiska skolor )

- By Eden Phoenix, Nov. 20th, 2009

There is so much to write about today! Where to begin…

I’ll just go in the order suggested by the headline.

1) New Additions

There are going to be some pretty exciting new additions to The MagaBlog in coming weeks. Truly!

First of all, as you know, we are expecting a contribution from a News21 journalist any day now. I know we keep teasing with the promise of this article, and (on behalf of The MagaBlog), I apologize for the long wait. The lesson learned by us here is that we shouldn’t post information on specific contributors until we’ve finalized all the dates involved.

Second, we are extremely excited to announce a new permanent contributor will be joining us within the next month or so! We’ll share more news as it arises.

3) Streamlining

We are still experimenting with finding the sweet spot between efficient journalistic convention and the informality of a blog. Bear with us. We are striving to develop a system of tagging, posting, citing, and linking. Some aspects of this are easier than others.

We also have some ultimate “streamlining” goals that we know it will take a while to achieve.

Allow you to begin following us on twitter from our homepage

Provide tabs that will take you to specific posts, sorted by category. We want to do this in the same way that the homepage would, not like pages would. Think sections of a newspaper.

Create our own “Theme.” I know: that was vague.

Set up a system that would allow temporary contributors to contribute an article, without having the same level and permanence of access to The MagaBlog as the permanent contributors.

Purchase a domain name that would allow us to remove the ” .wordpress” from our URL.

(Our most fun, and difficult goal) Be able to @reply people from within the text of a post. How fun would that be!?

3) Expanding Our Range

We definitely want to add more types of posts to The MagaBlog. We would love to be able to post critiques, political analysis, etc. without losing our focus as a blog about social media.

I know we’ve written a lot about Twitter, but we have been studying up on many other social media-related topics. We’re looking into Digg, YouTube, Facebook Video, LinkedIn, various blog sites (WordPress, Blogspot, etc.), The Huffington Post, Del.icio.us, and more. While we have been aware, we are observing and analyzing tradition and innovation regarding the qualities they posses and how they are used. The reason these posts take so long is due to the wide array of topics we can explore rather than a lack of suitable topics.

4) Information

The “Broadway (R)evolution” article will be up just as soon as we can possibly get it up. It may take a week or so.

As a side note: Please don’t think we’re being prissy if you see that we’ve typed “theatre,” and please don’t think we’re poorly edited if you see the words “theatre” and “theater” within the same post. “Theatre” signifies the dramatic arts while “theater” denotes the physical structure that serves as a venue for the dramatic arts. Theatre is probably going to become a large sub-focus of The MagaBlog in some way. You learn something new every day, I suppose. Kudos to those who knew already!

Popular social media destination Digg is no stranger to video production. In fact, they have five different video shows that go out mostly on a weekly basis, best known of which is Diggnation, where Digg founder Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht discuss the most popular stories on Digg.

Now, at DiggTV, you can follow all five shows at one place. It’s nothing groundbreaking, but for Digg fans it’s a nice one-stop shop for all their Digg video needs.

Besides Diggnation, the shows include the Digg Reel, in which Andrew Bancroft covers top videos on the web, Diggcetera, which is a mashup of various Digg videos, Digg Townhall, in which Kevin Rose and Digg CEO Jay Adelson answer questions from the Digg community. Finally, perhaps the most interesting show is Digg Dialogg, which features interviews with stars such as Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and Tony Hawk.

If you’re reading this article, it’s likely that you spend a fair amount of time online. However, considering how much of an influence the Internet has in our daily lives, how many of us actually know the story of how it got its start?

Here’s a brief history of the Internet, including important dates, people, projects, sites, and other information that should give you at least a partial picture of what this thing we call the Internet really is, and where it came from.

While the complete history of the Internet could easily fill a few books, this article should familiarize you with key milestones and events related to the growth and evolution of the Internet between 1969 to 2009.

1969: Arpanet

Arpanet was the first real network to run on packet switching technology (new at the time). On the October 29, 1969, computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time. In effect, they were the first hosts on what would one day become the Internet.

The first message sent across the network was supposed to be “Login”, but reportedly, the link between the two colleges crashed on the letter “g”.

1969: Unix

Another major milestone during the 60’s was the inception of Unix: the operating system whose design heavily influenced that of Linux and FreeBSD (the operating systems most popular in today’s web servers/web hosting services).

1970: Arpanet network

An Arpanet network was established between Harvard, MIT, and BBN (the company that created the “interface message processor” computers used to connect to the network) in 1970.

1971: Email

Email was first developed in 1971 by Ray Tomlinson, who also made the decision to use the “@” symbol to separate the user name from the computer name (which later on became the domain name).

1971: Project Gutenberg and eBooks

One of the most impressive developments of 1971 was the start of Project Gutenberg. Project Gutenberg, for those unfamiliar with the site, is a global effort to make books and documents in the public domain available electronically–for free–in a variety of eBook and electronic formats.

It began when Michael Hart gained access to a large block of computing time and came to the realization that the future of computers wasn’t in computing itself, but in the storage, retrieval and searching of information that, at the time, was only contained in libraries. He manually typed (no OCR at the time) the “Declaration of Independence” and launched Project Gutenberg to make information contained in books widely available in electronic form. In effect, this was the birth of the eBook.

1972: CYCLADES

France began its own Arpanet-like project in 1972, called CYCLADES. While Cyclades was eventually shut down, it did pioneer a key idea: the host computer should be responsible for data transmission rather than the network itself.

1973: The first trans-Atlantic connection and the popularity of emailing

Arpanet made its first trans-Atlantic connection in 1973, with the University College of London. During the same year, email accounted for 75% of all Arpanet network activity.

1974: The beginning of TCP/IP

1974 was a breakthrough year. A proposal was published to link Arpa-like networks together into a so-called “inter-network”, which would have no central control and would work around a transmission control protocol (which eventually became TCP/IP).

1975: The email client

With the popularity of emailing, the first modern email program was developed by John Vittal, a programmer at the University of Southern California in 1975. The biggest technological advance this program (called MSG) made was the addition of “Reply” and “Forward” functionality.

1977: The PC modem

1977 was a big year for the development of the Internet as we know it today. It’s the year the first PC modem, developed by Dennis Hayes and Dale Heatherington, was introduced and initially sold to computer hobbyists.

1978: The Bulletin Board System (BBS)

The first bulletin board system (BBS) was developed during a blizzard in Chicago in 1978.

1978: Spam is born

1978 is also the year that brought the first unsolicited commercial email message (later known as spam), sent out to 600 California Arpanet users by Gary Thuerk.

1979: MUD – The earliest form of multiplayer games

The precursor to World of Warcraft and Second Life was developed in 1979, and was called MUD (short for MultiUser Dungeon). MUDs were entirely text-based virtual worlds, combining elements of role-playing games, interactive, fiction, and online chat.

1979: Usenet

1979 also ushered into the scene: Usenet, created by two graduate students. Usenet was an internet-based discussion system, allowing people from around the globe to converse about the same topics by posting public messages categorized by newsgroups.

1980: ENQUIRE software

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (better known as CERN) launched ENQUIRE (written by Tim Berners-Lee), a hypertext program that allowed scientists at the particle physics lab to keep track of people, software, and projects using hypertext (hyperlinks).

1982: The first emoticon

While many people credit Kevin MacKenzie with the invention of the emoticon in 1979, it was Scott Fahlman in 1982 who proposed using after a joke, rather than the original -) proposed by MacKenzie. The modern emoticon was born.

1983: Arpanet computers switch over to TCP/IP

January 1, 1983 was the deadline for Arpanet computers to switch over to the TCP/IP protocols developed by Vinton Cerf. A few hundred computers were affected by the switch. The name server was also developed in ‘83.

1984: Domain Name System (DNS)

The domain name system was created in 1984 along with the first Domain Name Servers (DNS). The domain name system was important in that it made addresses on the Internet more human-friendly compared to its numerical IP address counterparts. DNS servers allowed Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember domain name and then converted it to the IP address automatically.

1985: Virtual communities

1985 brought the development of The WELL (short for Whole Earth ‘Lectronic Link), one of the oldest virtual communities still in operation. It was developed by Stewart Brand and Larry Brilliant in February of ‘85. It started out as a community of the readers and writers of the Whole Earth Review and was an open but “remarkably literate and uninhibited intellectual gathering”. Wired Magazine once called The Well “The most influential online community in the world.“

1986: Protocol wars

The so-called Protocol wars began in 1986. European countries at that time were pursuing the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI), while the United States was using the Internet/Arpanet protocol, which eventually won out.

1987: The Internet grows

By 1987, there were nearly 30,000 hosts on the Internet. The original Arpanet protocol had been limited to 1,000 hosts, but the adoption of the TCP/IP standard made larger numbers of hosts possible.

1988: IRC – Internet Relay Chat

Also in 1988, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) was first deployed, paving the way for real-time chat and the instant messaging programs we use today.

1988: First major malicious internet-based attack

One of the first major Internet worms was released in 1988. Referred to as “The Morris Worm”, it was written by Robert Tappan Morris and caused major interruptions across large parts of the Internet.

1989: AOL is launched

When Apple pulled out of the AppleLink program in 1989, the project was renamed and America Online was born. AOL, still in existence today, later on made the Internet popular amongst the average internet users.

1989: The proposal for the World Wide Web

1989 also brought about the proposal for the World Wide Web, written by Tim Berners-Lee. It was originally published in the March issue of MacWorld, and then redistributed in May 1990. It was written to persuade CERN that a global hypertext system was in CERN’s best interest. It was originally called “Mesh”; the term “World Wide Web” was coined while Berners-Lee was writing the code in 1990.

1990: First commercial dial-up ISP

1990 also brought about the first commercial dial-up Internet provider, The World. The same year, Arpanet ceased to exist.

1990: World Wide Web protocols finished

The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs.

1991: First web page created

1991 brought some major innovations to the world of the Internet. The first web page was created and, much like the first email explained what email was, its purpose was to explain what the World Wide Web was.

1991: First content-based search protocol

Also in the same year, the first search protocol that examined file contents instead of just file names was launched, called Gopher.

1991: MP3 becomes a standard

Also, the MP3 file format was accepted as a standard in 1991. MP3 files, being highly compressed, later become a popular file format to share songs and entire albums via the internet.

1991: The first webcam

One of the more interesting developments of this era, though, was the first webcam. It was deployed at a Cambridge University computer lab, and its sole purpose was to monitor a particular coffee maker so that lab users could avoid wasted trips to an empty coffee pot.

1993: Mosaic – first graphical web browser for the general public

The first widely downloaded Internet browser, Mosaic, was released in 1993. While Mosaic wasn’t the first web browser, it is considered the first browser to make the Internet easily accessible to non-techies.

1993: Governments join in on the fun

In 1993, both the White House and the United Nations came online, marking the beginning of the .gov and .org domain names.

1994: Netscape Navigator

Mosaic’s first big competitor, Netscape Navigator, was released the year following (1994).

1995: Commercialization of the internet

1995 is often considered the first year the web became commercialized. While there were commercial enterprises online prior to ‘95, there were a few key developments that happened that year. First, SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption was developed by Netscape, making it safer to conduct financial transactions (like credit card payments) online.

In addition, two major online businesses got their start the same year. The first sale on “Echo Bay” was made that year. Echo Bay later became eBay. Amazon.com also started in 1995, though it didn’t turn a profit for six years, until 2001.

1995: Geocities, the Vatican goes online, and JavaScript

Other major developments that year included the launch of Geocities (which officially closed down on October 26, 2009).

The Vatican also went online for the first time.

Java and JavaScript (originally called LiveScript by its creator, Brendan Eich, and deployed as part of the Netscape Navigator browser – see comments for explanation) was first introduced to the public in 1995. ActiveX was launched by Microsoft the following year.

1996: First web-based (webmail) service

In 1996, HoTMaiL (the capitalized letters are an homage to HTML), the first webmail service, was launched.

1997: The term “weblog” is coined

While the first blogs had been around for a few years in one form or another, 1997 was the first year the term “weblog” was used.

1998: First new story to be broken online instead of traditional media

In 1998, the first major news story to be broken online was the Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinsky scandal (also referred to as “Monicagate” among other nicknames), which was posted on The Drudge Report after Newsweek killed the story.

1998: Google!

Google went live in 1998, revolutionizing the way in which people find information online.

1998: Internet-based file-sharing gets its roots

In 1998 as well, Napster launched, opening up the gates to mainstream file-sharing of audio files over the internet.

1999: SETI@home project

1999 is the year when one of the more interesting projects ever brought online: the SETI@home project, launched. The project has created the equivalent of a giant supercomputer by harnessing the computing power of more than 3 million computers worldwide, using their processors whenever the screensaver comes on, indicating that the computer is idle. The program analyzes radio telescope data to look for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence.

2000: The bubble bursts

2000 was the year of the dotcom collapse, resulting in huge losses for legions of investors. Hundreds of companies closed, some of which had never turned a profit for their investors. The NASDAQ, which listed a large number of tech companies affected by the bubble, peaked at over 5,000, then lost 10% of its value in a single day, and finally hit bottom in October of 2002.

2001: Wikipedia is launched

With the dotcom collapse still going strong, Wikipedia launched in 2001, one of the websites that paved the way for collective web content generation/social media.

2003: VoIP goes mainstream

In 2003: Skype is released to the public, giving a user-friendly interface to Voice over IP calling.

2003: MySpace becomes the most popular social network

Also in 2003, MySpace opens up its doors. It later grew to be the most popular social network at one time (thought it has since been overtaken by Facebook).

2003: CAN-SPAM Act puts a lid on unsolicited emails

Another major advance in 2003 was the signing of the Controlling the Assault of Non-Solicited Pornography and Marketing Act of 2003, better known as the CAN-SPAM Act.

2004: Web 2.0

Though coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci, the term “Web 2.0″, referring to websites and Rich Internet Applications (RIA) that are highly interactive and user-driven became popular around 2004. During the first Web 2.0 conference, John Batelle and Tim O’Reilly described the concept of “the Web as a Platform“: software applications built to take advantage of internet connectivity, moving away from the desktop (which has downsides such as operating system dependency and lack of interoperability).

2004: Social Media and Digg

The term “social media”, believed to be first used by Chris Sharpley, was coined in the same year that “Web 2.0″ became a mainstream concept. Social media–sites and web applications that allow its users to create and share content and to connect with one another–started around this period.

Digg, a social news site, launched on November of 2004, paving the way for sites such as Reddit, Mixx, and Yahoo! Buzz. Digg revolutionized traditional means of generating and finding web content, democratically promoting news and web links that are reviewed and voted on by a community.

2004: “The” Facebook open to college students

Facebook launched in 2004, though at the time it was only open to college students and was called “The Facebook”; later on, “The” was dropped from the name, though the URL http://www.thefacebook.com still works.

2005: YouTube – streaming video for the masses

YouTube launched in 2005, bringing free online video hosting and sharing to the masses.

2006: Twitter gets twittering

Twitter launched in 2006. It was originally going to be called twittr (inspired by Flickr); the first Twitter message was “just setting up my twttr”.

2007: Major move to place TV shows online

Hulu was first launched in 2007, a joint venture between ABC, NBC, and Fox to make popular TV shows available to watch online.

2007: The iPhone and the Mobile Web

The biggest innovation of 2007 was almost certainly the iPhone, which was almost wholly responsible for renewed interest in mobile web applications and design.

2008: “Internet Election”

The first “Internet election” took place in 2008 with the U.S. Presidential election. It was the first year that national candidates took full advantage of all the Internet had to offer. Hillary Clinton jumped on board early with YouTube campaign videos. Virtually every candidate had a Facebook page or a Twitter feed, or both.

Ron Paul set a new fundraising record by raising $4.3 million in a single day through online donations, and then beat his own record only weeks later by raising $4.4 million in a single day.

The 2008 elections placed the Internet squarely at the forefront of politics and campaigning, a trend that is unlikely to change any time in the near future.

2009: ICANN policy changes

2009 brought about one of the biggest changes to come to the Internet in a long time when the U.S. relaxed its control over ICANN, the official naming body of the Internet (they’re the organization in charge of registering domain names).

you’re reading this article, it’s likely that you spend a fair amount of time online.

Puzzled about it all?!?!

Which brings me back to social media sites. When you’re giving the masses the ability to submit, vote on and promote any sort of content from across the entire web, what do you think they’ll do?

Sure, some people will want to know about the latest news in the Middle East while others are interested in Obama, and lots of people are are paying attention to Jerry O’Connell’s ‘Life in a SPEEDO’ wtf, howabout the economy, and other relevant or non-valuable information.

And yeah, niche social media and social news sites will have a focus (Digg leans towards technology, BallHype is sports-oriented, and Linkswarm focuses on Pop Culture & bizarre news).

But when you sift through the crap most of the general social media site that allows anyone to participate, you’re gonna see a lot of mainstream, general crowd pleasing stuff. Pictures you can easily glance at and laugh about stupid rants that have no discernible point and won’t make any sort of positive impact other than the fact that they made you smile or laugh for five minutes out of your busy, hectic Facebook day.

Similarly, great content still exists on the web just as it’s always existed, and it’s easy to find it if you know where to look.

Don’t take a cursory look at social media and reduce a vast, entire Internet’s worth of content to the stuff you see being featured on LinkedIn, Stumbleupon, Facebook, and MySpace profiles, etc.

Just because the “crappy” stuff now has a magnifying glass being held over it doesn’t mean it didn’t exist before or that the “good” stuff is drastically declining. That’s the beauty of the Internet–it’s a comprehensive resource created by humans, for humans. And it’s for every and all kinds of people–freaks, snobs, dummies, juveniles, women, men, geeks, liberals, conservatives, and porn stars.

Today, I’m wondering why you engage in social media marketing - is it personal, on behalf of your company (or clients), or some combination of the two?

Why do you have social media accounts?

What do you use them for?

Agreed, there are a great deal of social news sites on the internet, sometimes too many. Most of them are dormant and no longer active or you forget about them and the usernames and passwords, perhaps it’s largely because they are poorly marketed and hence, never had an active community of users in the first place!

Just my opinion but most of them are a waste of your time: they are riddled with spam and possibly will never attract a critical mass of viewers and participants so know your sites and don’t bother. hmmmm

YOU don’t have alot of time on your hands.

YOU want a community that gives you fresh news on topics that appeal to you.

YOU want somthing that sends prospects and traffic while ‘branding‘ your website or business.

YOU want a social news site with a long term return on your investment!

Here’s my TOP 5 General Social News Websites in no particular order..

1. Reddit-popular social news website with a large user base. Covers a wide range of news. Includes several topical sections called subreddits, which focus on specific topics like programming, science, politics and business.

2. Digg - the largest and most popular social news website on the internet. Covers all topics including politics, entertainment, technology and general news. Includes a separate video and image section.

3. Propeller – A social news site that covers all topics from technology to politics and entertainment. Operates in a similar fashion to Digg.

4. Fark – A community news site which allows users to comment on news articles. User submitted links will be posted on the main page once they are approved by the administrators.

5. Slashdot – primarily a tech news site, Slashdot also covers topics like books, games, politics and entertainment. Users can submit stories and they may be published after editors approve it. A popular site that can send a large amount of traffic.

But don’t take my word for it try them yourself!

Morgan harrington has been missing for close to a month since she was last seen at a Metallica show. Since then, Find Morgan.com has been created. It is a web site devoted to search efforts. Please view the site and photo’s. There is a person missed by her parents and family. Metallica has offered rewards for her safe return. The site contains updates, a blog by the family, press releases and more.

This incident as well as the case of Theresa Marie Meadows has she a new light on social media. It used to be missing people ended up on milk cartons but Facebook, Twitter, Digg and other tools show they have potential to be a real resource in missing persons cases.

This blog's WordPress Dashboard statistics One of the most enjoyable aspects of virtual events b

This blog's WordPress Dashboard statistics

One of the most enjoyable aspects of virtual events blogging (for me) is the ability to observe which postings “work” and which postings don’t work. I’ve come to learn that my intuition is often off – postings that I think will generate a lot of traffic don’t, while postings that I thought were marginal become very popular.

For instance, I wrote a posting on the concept of applying Web 2.0 to webinars – it was one of my better pieces of work, but the blogosphere voted with their mouse clicks and (unless we had an issue with counting / undercounting of votes) it didn’t even scratch the Top 10 list of posts [over the past 3 months].

With social media sharing these days, I found that the biggest factor in which posts receive traffic (relative to others) is how and where a given posting is shared. All it takes is a few retweets from prominent Twitter users (i.e. with 20,000 followers each) to drive a lot of page views to a particular blog posting. Or, someone posts your blog entry to a sharing site, such as StumbleUpon or digg - you’ll see traffic spike when that occurs.

Another factor is search engine optimization (SEO) – with some of my blog postings, I referenced people, places, certain virtual worlds, etc. – and received search engine traffic from users searching on those terms.

Examples include: Gregory House, My Little Pony (they have a virtual world), Online Dating, Club Penguin. Some of those blog postings were marginal at best – but they continue to draw traffic to this day – by virtue of having common search engine terms in their content.

Here’s a listing of the Top 5 blog postings (on this blog) over the past 3 months – as measured by the number of page views:

How To Promote Your Virtual Event On Twitter – the key point in this posting – to be able to best leverage Twitter, you need to work hard to build the right “following” first. This posting received top billing (of traffic) by virtue of tweets/retweets, along with some postings to digg.

Virtual Tradeshow Best Practices: Top 10 Exhibitor Tactics – written back in May, this is always a popular one – it has a fair number of in-bound links and also gets a lot of search engine traffic.

The Advantages Of Virtual Meetings – I provided commentary around a Forbes Insights piece that presented the case for face-to-face meetings. This gets a lot of its traffic via inbound links.

Virtual Worlds: Where We Were, Where We’re Going, What Does It Mean to YOU? – a guest post by Linda Holroyd, CEO of FountainBlue. Linda may not have known it at the time, but her posting is an SEO hotbed – it contains lots of relevant terms related to virtual worlds – and, lists the names of many industry executives and entrepreneurs (and their companies). So this blog posting receives traffic when users search for those individuals’ names or company names.

Hey Kids! I’ve Got a Virtual World For You – it’s like a boomerang (it keeps coming back) – I wrote this back in January and the posting can still make this Top 5 list of the past 3 months. The reason? It’s rich in search-friendly terms (Club Penguin, Webkinz, My Little Pony, Cabbage Patch, Beanie Babies, etc.) – I suppose I’ve managed to extend the reach of this blog to parents, who are performing searches on children’s toys!

So there you have it. I’d love to hear from you – what’s been your favorite blog posting?
