Die “Aimat” besitzt absichtlich eine Pistolenform. Das erleichtere den Hobbyfotografen, per Point-and-Shoot ganz schnell gezielte Schnappschüsse zu machen. Witzige Idee, aber nicht ganz ungefährlich. Gestern sehr spontan, bei herrlichem Sonnenschein durch mein Städtchen spaziert. Ach ja die Digicam hatte ich glücklicherweise auch dabei. Das da kam bei raus:

Birken sind ja in Farbe schon sehr kontrastreich und diese Hier in S/W mit noch ganz viel Blätter erst recht.

Bei dieser Aufnahme gefällt mir das Licht sehr gut!

Diese Trauerweide ist einfach riesengroß und wunderschön anzusehen. Bei voller Blätterpracht und im Dämmerlicht bekommt man fast schon Angst …

As I was returning from my mini shopping spree from Fab India in KalaGhoda (No I didn’t get clothes – I kept contemplating over a sexy piece of patiala and kurta for Rs 1660/- ended up buying tangy pickle and chaat masala instead) I was passing by Campion School and YWCA as I saw her marching away wearing a gorgeous green dress over a pair of sassy leggings and a jacket of sorts and a quirky pair of sunglasses. I gotta tell you – this girls’ got style. And that bob she sported! It put my poodle hair to shame. Gosh I better rethink my bangs now! Hello Ms. Electric or should we say Ms. Eclectic !

Jaja, der Markt für Digicams wird täglich enger, und da müssen neue Ideen her, wenn man sein Zeug unters Volk bringen will.

Zum Beispiel die Integration einer Funktion, die  Golfspielern hilft, ihre Haltung beim Abschlag zu verbessern.Die hat Casio in die Exilim Hi-Speed EX-FS-100 integriert: Mit bis zu 1.000 Bildern in der Sekunde wird die Abschlagbewegung als Video aufgezeichnet und analysiert.

Auf das Bild werden dann LInien gezeichnet, die zeigen, wie man sich tatsächlich hätte bewegen müssen, um irgendwann als Golf-Profi zu enden und endlich die Zahnarztpraxis aufgeben zu können.

Das Ganze kann man sich außerdem auch via AV-Kabel auf dem Fernseher bis zum Erbrechen ansehen und in superlangsamer Zeitlupe auch noch das geringste Zucken der Gesäßmuskeln kommentieren.

An der Entwicklung des Systems sollen führende japanische Golfspieler und -trainer  und Zahnärzte beteiligt gewesen sein; auf den Markt kommt die Kamera vorerst nur in Japan und zwar für umgerechnet etwa 250 Euro. [dieter]

Die Japaner sind bekannt für sagen wir mal abstruse Einfälle. Panasonic hatte gerade so einen und glaubt, das eine große Monstertaube mit blutunterlaufenen Augen die ideale Werbung sei. Wofür? Für eine Kamera.

In einem Londoner Park ließ sich die unheimliche Werbeskulptur nieder: 3,2 Meter Scheitelhöhe, 200 kg Lebendgewicht. Zwei Wochen lang soll die Kunsttaube in der Themsestadt an wechselnden Standorten für Aufsehen sorgen, bevor sie sich eine nächste Stadt als Opfer sucht.
Da fragt man sich natürlich, was hat eine Taube mit der Lumix DMC-ZX1 zu tun, für die sie laut Panasonic die Werbeflügel schlägt? Adler oder Falke hätte man wegen der berühmten Scharfsichtigkeit noch verstanden. Aber eine fliegende Ratte? Mit fiesen roten Augen?
Das passt irgendwie nicht zur 25 mm dünnen Kompaktkamera mit 8fach-Zoom, ordentlichem Weitwinkel, hoher Auflösung und überdurchschnittlicher Bildqualität. Im ColorFoto-Vergleichstest erreichte die ZX1 gerade auf Anhieb Platz zwei. [Ralf]

Panasonic ZR1 zoomt sich ordentlich heran

Sekilas melihat, Kodak Easyshare Z1015 tampak tidak stylish. Namun, untuk hitungan kamera berlensa zoom optis besar dan layar LCD 3 inci, perangkat ini masih tergolong ringkas karena dapat digenggam dengan kokoh dan bisa dioperasikan hanya dengan satu tangan. Lensa Schneider Kreuznach jenis Variogon menjadi nilai lebih dari kamera ini. Diameter lensanya pun cukup besar sehingga mampu menghimpun cahaya secara optimal.

Sistem navigasi dan kontrol yang dimiliki kodak Easyshare Z1015 tergolong sederhana. Menu-menu pengaturan dirancang tidak melibatkan banyak langkah sehingga membuatnya mudah dan cepat dioperasikan. Di bagian atas badan kamera terdapat 3 tombol untuk mengatur modus lampu kilat, modus pemfokusan, serta jumlah pemotretan. Juga terdapat tombol putar (dial) untuk memilih modus pemotretan (lihat tabel Spesifikasi), perekam video, perekam objek dinamis (Sport), perekam ISO tinggi, serta pemotretan khusus atau Scene (Lihat tabel Spesifikasi).

Pada panel belakang kamera, layar LCD dibingkai dengan tiga buah tombol untuk review hasil rekaman, menghapus file foto, serta tombol Menu. Di sebelahnya lagi, terdapat tombol empat arah untuk navigasi. Di sebelah kiri layar LCD terdapat tombol putar-tekan yang merupakan navigasi utama dalam pengaturan modus pemotretan manual dan semi-manual.

Untuk mengetahui kinerja Kodak Easyshare Z1015 IS, kami menyiapkan tiga teknik pengujian, yaitu: uji distorsi dan ketajaman lensa, uji dynamic range dan noise pada sensor cahaya, serta uji kemurnian kanal warna pada sensor cahaya.

Untuk menguji distorsi lensa, kami memotret cetakan pola grid. Pemotretan kami lakukan pada titik api lensa (zoom) optis terendah dan yang tertinggi. Sementara potret cetakan file bergambar bujur sangkar miring berformat vektor kami jadikan bahan uji ketajaman lensa. Bahan uji dynamic range kami buat dengan memotret cetakan menyerupai greycard yang berisi rentang nada abu-abu dari putih murni sampai dengan hitam murni. Terakhir, bahan uji kemurnian warna kami buat dengan memotret sampel warna Red (R=255, G=0, B=0 atau C=0, M=100, Y=100, K=0), Green (R=0, G=255, B=0 atau C=100, M=0, Y=100, K=0), Blue (R=0, G=0, B=255 atau C=100, M=100, Y=0, K=0) dari color guide.

Semua file hasil pemotretan kami proses ke dalam software pengujian. Hasilnya, pada pengujian distorsi lensa, Kodak Easyshare menunjukkan angka k1 yang cukup kecil, yaitu  0,00125 pada titik zoom optis paling kecil dan -0,0105 pada titik zoom optis tertinggi. Angka k1=0 menunjukkan tidak adanya distorsi. Angka k1 negatif menunjukkan distorsi jenis pinchusion (melengkung ke dalam), sedangkan angka k1 positif menunjukkan distorsi jenis barrel (melengkung ke  luar).

Saat menguji ketajaman lensa, grafik SFR (Spatial Frequency Response) atau MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) menunjukkan capaian angka 0,121 Cycles/Pixel pada titik zoom optis terkecil dan angka 0,357 Cycles/Pixel pada titik zoom optis terbesar. Sebagai gambaran, capaian angka MTF 0,33 Cycles/Pixel merupakan nilai yang lumayan bagus pada kebanyakan kamera digital kelas kompak. Pada grafik Chromatic Abberation (CA) titik zoom optis terkecil terlihat penyimpangan yang lebih besar (1,69 piksel) jika dibanding dengan yang ada pada titik zoom optis tertinggi (0,355 piksel)

Pengujian dynamic range untuk mengetahui banyaknya tingkatan nada (zone) abu-abu atau gelap-terang yang dapat direkam oleh kamera. Hal ini berpengaruh kepada kehalusan perpindahan kontras dan perpindahan warna pada foto. Grafik Density Response pada hasil pengujian menunjukkan, Kodak Easyshare Z1015 mampu merekam 54 tingkatan (zone) nada gelap-terang dari 62 zone yang ada pada foto greycard bahan uji.

Pengujian kemurnian warna diterapkan pada ketiga kanal warna (Red, Green, serta Blue). Rentang nilainya adalah dari angka 0 sampai 255 (256 nilai). Pengujian ini juga menghasilkan nilai standar deviasi yang menunjukkan besarnya penyimpangan warna. Grafik Color Mapper pada hasil uji menunjukkan bahwa pada kanal warna Red, capaian kemurnian warna adalah 142,55 dan deviasinya adalah 73,49. Pada kanal warna Green, capaian kemurnian warna adalah 142,85 dan deviasinya adalah 72,60. Sementara itu, pada kanal warna Blue, capaian kemurnian warna adalah 139,63 dan deviasinya adalah 73,38.

Kodak Easyshare Z1015 IS menampilkan kinerja yang bagus pada lensa (ketajaman dan distorsi). Kinerja sensor cahaya (dynamic range dan kemurnian kanal warna) berada sedikit di atas rata-rata kemampuan sensor cahaya kamera digital kompak lainnya. Ini membuatnya cukup bagus untuk merekam objek yang tidak terlalu dinamis. Perangkat ini bisa memenuhi kebutuhan penggemar fotografi yang ingin mulai memelajari teknik fotografi.

Canon’s $1,900 EOS 7D DSLR just started shipping a month ago to pros and those who’d like to be, and already the thing is causing all sorts of fits when shooting continuously. In a service notice posted today on the outfit’s website, we’re told that images “captured by continuous shooting and under certain conditions [can exhibit] barely noticeable traces of the immediately preceding frame.” The phenomenon isn’t apt to be noticeable with optimal exposure, but apparently a number of Photoshoppers have been irked by the additional (and unwelcome) elements added to their shots. Canon assures us that a firmware fix is on the way, and you can bet we’ll point you to a download link as soon as it hits.

Video editing is considered my artwork and my artwork is started to feel like real work, a demand. It used to be fun, matter of fact making videos is still fun, but now I feel like I have to record everything. Which I don’t have a problem with but I do have a problem with not having proper equipment. I want a better camera, my digicam is not good enough, it needs to be HD, and WWM isn’t good enough either. I have a SONY notebook, I should be using Sony Vegas Pro. These things would definitely bring a bigger audience………..

Canon Powershot SX120IS

Akhirnyaaaa… kesampean juga beli digicam, setelah bingang bingung milih antara mau beli Panasonic Lumix FZ18, Panasonic Lumix TZ15, Canon  Powershot D10 sama Canon Powershot SX120IS, akhirnya gw memutuskan untuk beli yang murmer aja, dengan 10x Optical zoom yaitu Canon Powershot SX120IS. Kemarin pulang kantor gw pergi ke pasar baru dianter bokap, abis mutar muter di gedung sebrang Metro Atom Plaza, kaga ada yang jual Canon SX120IS, meanwhile tadi sore temen kantor gw ada yang bilang tadi dia abis dari toko digicam langganannya anekafoto untuk beli batere dan dia liat Canon SX120IS available, disitu harganya Rp2.640.000, lebih mahal dari harga yang tertera di situs tokocamzone yang cuma Rp2.500.000. Yaah berhubung gw butuh tu digicam immediately buat konsinyering ke Lembang besok, akhirnya gw ambil deh dengan harga Rp2.615.000.

Estimasi gw sendiri untuk harga digicam, charger + 4 battery, SD Card sama case nya Rp3.190.000, tapi gw berhasil membawa pulang Canon SX120IS, Memory Card Sandisk Extreme III 4GB, Charger Sanyo yang Quick Refresh (pas nge-charge dia kosongin dulu tu batere, baru di isi ulang, karena batere AA bagusnya di charge dalam kondisi kosong), 4 Battery Sanyo 2700 MAh (2 udah include di charger nya), LCD Screen Guide & digicam case dengan total harga Rp3.178.000 beda tipiiiisss sama estimasi gw. Emang sih kameranya lebih mahal dari harga di tokocamzone, tapi harga charger, battery sama memory card di Aneka Foto lebih murah, bisa terpaut Rp30ribuan sampe Rp60ribuan dari tokocamzone, ujung2nya equal juga sih, secarrra gw juga udah dapet charger dan memory card yang lebih bagus dari estimasi gw yang semula ditambah udah pake LCD Screen Guard, hanya saja beli casenya bukan yang merk lowepro karena Canon SX120IS terlalu besar untuk stock lowepro yang tersedia, tapi hard case yang gw beli cukup elekhan walopun harganya murmer.

Tapi puwash lah dengan semua barang yang gw beli di sana. I’ll take pasar baru as one of my favorite shopping center, terutama di Metro Atom Plaza nya. Gw beli pas udah injury time tu toko mo tutup, the store supposed to be closed at 17:30.

Pulang dengan suka hati dong gw, cuma ada yang ga ngenakin pas pulang dari pasar baru di lampu merah deket Gajah Mada Plaza, muacet abiss… bokap gw dengan lihainya nyelap nyelip diantara kendaraan2 yang padet banget, nah pas ngelewatin jalan yang geradakan motornya dibawa miring ke kiri banget, alhasil gw yang duduk nyamping dengan manis karena pake rok, melorot dan gw turun aja dari motor, tapi gw belum sempet naek, babe guwe maen jalan aja, gw udah manggil2 “Ayah! Ayah!!” gw kira bokap mau menepi, ternyata belio malah jalan terooosss… huff untung masih lampu merah, sambil mengambil langkah seribu gw coba kerjar lah tu babe guwe, yaakk… tinggal beberapa langkah lagi… and then lampunya berubah ijo, damn! Dan akhirnya saudara saudara… gw ditinggal di lampu merah itu sambil nenteng2 helm pink menatapi bokap gw yang dengan santainya pergi meninggalkan diriku yang malang ini.

Sambil ngarep belio balik jemput gw, gw celingukan mencoba mengenali daerah asing tempat gw berdiri, sambil mikir ‘duh kayanya bokap ga bakal balik untuk jemput gw deh secarrra lampu merah tempat gw berdiri jalannya satu arah, dan klo muter balik jauh + muacet pula, udah hopeless lah pokoknya’. Tiba2 babe gw nelpon juga pas belio udah sampe rumah, Gosh! Napa nyadarnya lama bener yak? He said, “kamu dimana?” sambil full kesel + ditambah lebay dikit gw jawab “sari lagi di lampu merah entah dimana nih, tadi sari jatoh dari motor eh ayah malah jalan aja bla bla bla” tapi walaupun kesel, ujung2nya gw ama bokap malah keketawaan, abiiisss lucunya kejadian itu ngalahin kekeselan kami berdua, sebenernya bokap juga jengkel karena gw ga pegangan dan ternyata daritadi belio ngobrol ngalor ngidul sendirian, pas nengok kebelakang he was kinda ‘lha? Mana anak gue?’ ujung2nya gw nek ojeg dweh pulang ke rumah. But eniwey, thanks dad udah mo nemenin

Mal wieder ein Foto das ich in Heidelberg geknipst habe. Ich finde es wirkt ziemlich surreal, als ob an dieser Wand zwei Bilder hängen. Die Rahmen erscheinen von der Fotoschärfe her klarer. Mir gefällt das Foto ziemlich gut.

Fujifilm today announced the launch of its new imaging technology, the FinePix REAL 3D System. It is, in fact, the world’s first 3D (three dimensional) digital imaging system that lets users enjoy 3D images with naked eye without the need for wearing special 3D glasses, Fujifilm claims. The revolutionary 3D system consists of FinePix REAL 3D W1, the 3D camera; FinePix REAL 3D V1, an 8 inch viewer on which spectacular 3D images can be displayed; and 3D Print, Fujifilm’s high precision production technology that enables users to print 3D images.

According to Mr. Kenichi Tanaka, Managing Director, Fujifilm India, “Fujifilm believes in bringing the latest of its technological innovations to the discerning buyers in India. In accordance with our strategy to become one of the top digital camera brands in India and acquire 15% market share in three years, we shall continue to introduce digital camera models that are either world’s first in some aspect, are award winning or based on an innovative technology that’s exclusive to FUJIFILM owing to our incessant research & development.”

To achieve a 3D image, it is necessary to flawlessly layer together two images, so two Fujinon lenses, renowned for their high resolution & exquisite rendering, are installed. A 3x optical zoom, deemed difficult to achieve in 3D photography because of the precision required to align two lenses, has also been achieved. Moreover, the engine of the camera – RP (Real Photo) Processor 3D, another photo technology marvel developed by FUJIFILM over the years – synchronizes data passed to it by the two lenses and two CCD sensors, to determine shooting conditions such as focus, brightness and tonality to instantaneously blend this information into a single symmetrical image. The 2.8” 3D/2D LCD monitor features FUJIFILM’s own LCD panel.

In the ‘Individual Shutter 3D Shooting’ mode, the camera takes two shots, one after the other, and saves a single 3D image in the camera manually. The 3D image generated can be edited and this is particularly useful for landscape photography where a 3D image is difficult to achieve, or conversely, macro shots, where the 3D effect can be too strong. In the ‘Interval 3D Shooting’ mode, it is possible to take two shots from different viewpoints continuously while the photographer is moving, for example by train, airplane, or car, etc., to achieve 3D images of long-distance views. By using the ‘Parallax Control (3D Tuning Function)’, the 3D images can be manually adjusted for a clear and sharper 3D view. Adjustable in both live images on LCD panel while shooting and recorded images, this simplicity-of-use lets users really get creative.

Users can simply insert the SD memory card, in which 3D images (or videos) have been saved, into the 3D viewer and enjoy a 3D slideshow. They can be in complete control using the intuitive remote control. If the ‘Parallax Control’ is used, users can adjust the 3D effect on the viewer manually. The 3D viewer has easy-to-use features like Micro Thumbnail View and ‘Image Search’. It can also receive image data via high-speed IR (infrared) communication. Users can also directly connect it to their PC via USB and transfer stored images to the viewer for display.

The FinePix REAL 3D W1 camera is available at a special price of Rs 39,999 at all authorised FUJIFILM retail and channel partners across the country.

Samsung India has launched the company’s two new dual-screen compact digital cameras, ST550 and ST500, which boast the ‘world first’ of front and back LCD display technology.

WHAT’S INSIDE?

The front of the camera has a 1.5-inch LCD screen, while a 3.5-inch touchscreen LCD sits at the back of the ST550 and a 3-inch on the back of the ST500.

Complementing this, the 12.2-megapixel cameras also use the perfect combination of a 27mm wide angle Schneider-Kreuznach lens with 4.6x optical zoom. This gives the photographer a wider shooting range from a shorter distance, producing clear, clean images with even resolution from the centre of the picture right to the edges.

The devices can record high-definition video, crank up the sensitivity to ISO 3200 if needed, and come with all the usual lot of advanced photography technologies such as smile shutter, face recognition, image stabilisation, autofocus, etc. Both cameras come with HDMI out, as well as a microSD card slot, which allows you to store up to 1,200 images at full 12-megapixel resolution on a 4GB card.

DUAL LCD DISPLAYS

With the Dual LCD on front and back, ST550 and ST500 provide the easiest way to take the perfect self portrait, either by yourself or with friends or family, every time. On the front of the camera is a 1.5-inch LCD that shows you exactly what the picture will look like, so you can now be a subject of the picture, as well as the photographer.

When you tap the front LCD, it turns on and automatically goes into Self-Portrait mode, ensuring that the user will always be framed exactly the way they want. You can also turn on the front LCD with a simple selection through the intuitive interface. As soon as you smile, the camera automatically takes the picture. But the Dual LCDs do more.

In Children mode, the front LCD plays a fun animation to capture a child’s attention while taking their photo.

Shutter Info ensures you take a photo of your subject while they’re smiling, the front LCD will display a “smiley face” when the shutter is pushed halfway thus signalling to the subject they should smile.

Function Info helps you to know the features of every function, with the front LCD providing a visual readout of key camera settings, including whether or not the flash is engaged or if macro focus is in use.

With Self-Timer, when taking a group photo using the self-timer, the front LCD will show a preview of the shot as well as a visual countdown timer so that everyone knows exactly when the photo will be snapped.

SMART GESTURE UI

When it comes to smart, user-friendly features, the ST550 and ST500 are leading the way. Take, for example, their innovative Smart Gesture UI with built-in orientation sensor, which lets you quickly access and use the key features with either a simple tap or a hand gesture. To turn on the smaller LCD located on the front, simply tap the screen and activates automatically and immediately.

Using other advanced features is just as simple. With the Smart Gesture UI you can quickly scroll through your photos by slightly tilting the device in either direction or by selecting the appropriate photos for a slide show. You can also easily delete photos from your library using Gesture UI by marking a cross (X) on the screen using your finger or you can simply save your favourite photos into a separate folder.

If you want to rotate the images draw a circle (O) on the screen; if you want to see the next image you can drag it on to the screen with a sweep of your finger or by simply tilting the device.

Both the cameras are available now in the Indian market, with the 3.5-inch higher-end ST550 retailing at Rs. 24,990, while the smaller ST500 is priced at Rs. 20,990.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm F1.8 G – Ревю

Nikkor AF-S 35/1.8 е “твърд” обектив, разработен специално за собствениците на камери Nikon с размер на матрицата 24 х 16 мм или както е популярно да се казва “кропка” с кроп фактор 1.5.

Обективът е сравнително лек, тъй като е изработен от пластмасови материали, но байонетът му е метален. Няма външен пръстен за механично управление на бленда, както старите 35/2.0 или 50/1.8, но и едва ли ще му е необходим, тъй като не е предвидено да се използва на по-стари механични филмови камери Никон. Всъщност това е един дългоочакван обектив от Никон, тъй като с появата на камери без мотор в тялото, беше наложително да се появят и твърди обективи с вграден мотор. В противен случай собствениците на новите базови модели Никон трябваше да се задоволят само с тъмни вариообективи. Няма как да си купиш тяло за под 1000лв и да дадеш още два пъти по толкова за качествен светлосилен варио обектив. 35/1.8 е чудесна възможност за всички собственици на базови модели камери Никон, да “прогледнат” и да започнат да правят снимки при естествена светлина, дори и при по-лоши светлинни условия.

Според зрителния си ъгъл Nikkor 35/1.8 може да бъде определен като “нормален” обектив. Поставен на “кропка”, “вижда” приблизително както 50мм обектив на 24х36мм камера. Мога да го определя като универсален обектив, който може да се използва за различни задачи. Определено не е за портрети по-крупен план, но върши работа и като портретен, когато се снима в по-далечен план или от по-особен ъгъл. Челният оптичен елемент не се върти, което е предпоставка за лесно ползване на поляризационни филтри.

Използвах обектива с камери Fuji S5 (Nikon D200) и Nikon D5000 . Мога да кажа, че обективът е почти задължителен за всеки собственик на камера Nikon с APS матрица. Автофокусът е бърз и безшумен. Рязкостта е чудесна по цялото поле на кадъра. Дори и на бленда 1.8 снимката е 100% използваема до печат 60х40, както в центъра, така и в края. Особено съм доволен от резултатите при ниска осветеност, когато е наложително да се запази естествената атмосфера на мястото. Фокусирането по всички странични зони с двете камери се оказа точно и безпроблемно, а бракът минимален.

Единствените ми забележки са към хроматичните аберации. Те са видими, особено в контрастните зони и не изчезват дори при затваряне на блендата, но реално не са чак толкова много, за да са голям проблем.

Nikon is justly renowned for its impressive range of entry level Digital SLR cameras that bring the world of serious digital imaging into the reach of, well, most of us. However, not everyone wants to carry a bulky black camera around with them, no matter how impressive the images it produces are. So Nikon also focuses on producing an attractive range of highly desirable, incredibly compact cameras, of which the Nikon Coolpix S52 is the latest installment.

The Camera
It’s actually part of a double bill of S52 cameras, the other being the Coolpix S52C, where, we assume, the C stands for ‘connectivity’. This is because the other, more expensive, camera offers pretty much the same specification but adds Wi-Fi connectivity into the mix. Which is nice, but if instantly sharing images over a network isn’t your thing, this camera is a much better bet, especially as it’s a tad slimmer.

And slim it is. The Nikon Coolpix S52 is one of the nicest looking cameras we’ve seen from the company, with a smart silver front piece benefiting from a subtle curve, and a polished black back end, most of which is taken up by the large three-inch LCD screen. As is often the case on compacts now, there’s no room for an optical viewfinder, so all this visual acreage will come in handy.

All the menus and options are accessed via the closely-grouped but easily accessible collection of controls that sit to the right of the screen. The only other button of note is the smiley face icon on the top lip of the Nikon Coolpix S52. This provides you instant access to ‘portrait’ mode, which lets the camera know you are about to take a picture of a person’s face, and brace itself accordingly.

The face recognition is capable of recognizing 12 people – so it’s great for family portraits, with bags of detail on show and a real ability to grab people’s expressions. The fact that the Nikon Coolpix S52 is also pretty nippy helps. Reaction times seem smart in the extreme, and the portrait mode here continues that trend.

This nice feature displays the depth of thought that Nikon has put into this camera, and the menu system continues that theme because it’s simple to use, but also deep enough so that more experienced snappers will find it useful. The controls themselves are a little bit on the unresponsive side at times, but in general the Nikon Coolpix S52 is a very neat little camera to use, and has just the right blend of style and features to appeal.

Talking of features, beyond the face recognition, the other feature of note is its ultra high ISO setting, obviously designed for shooting in low light with the need to resort to the rather weedy flash. Nikon makes a big deal of this camera’s high ISO setting, and at 3200 it’s pretty much as high as you currently get in a compact camera.

However, as is often the case, the usefulness of this feature is sometimes debatable. Yes, it gets you an image in an unfriendly situation, but unless you are a private eye we’re not entirely sure we would want to print it!

A look at the images here, all taken on a foggy Cornish morning, is a case in point. Yes, there’s more light in the images taken with higher ISOs, but the noise quickly becomes unworkable, and certainly unprintable. In more clement circumstances though, the Nikon Coolpix S52 seems to love the sunshine, and is capable of delivering bright and natural hues that really grab your attention. It also delivers bags of detail, with nice crisp edges that are really appealing.

It also steers pretty clear of those compact camera bugbears of barrel distortion and chromatic aberration. Yes, theirs is a little bit of distortion right at the edges of the image when shooting in wide angle lens, but it tends to be on a par with the competition, and certainly no worse.

Conclusion
So, the Nikon Coolpix S52 turns out to be a very neat little camera, even without the new-fangled addition of wireless communication. It’s easy to use, and capable of some very clear, crisp images, particularly if you are the kind of person who is constantly shooting friends and family.

Sony’s CyberShot DSC-T2 is a very unusual camera, indeed. Normally, we talk about cameras with a pointless amount of internal memory, kind of like 26mb, which is enough for only a handful of photos from the latest multi-megapixel cameras, such as the eight megapixels on offer here. But, the T2 breaks the mould, offering a whopping dirty great big 4GB of storage space – which is enough for over 1200 pictures shot at the highest quality!

It’s also a little odd looking. Our sample was bright green, which is unusual enough, but the box-like rectangular shape is also rather different, with its distinct lack of protrusions giving it the appearance of a pack of slightly under-sized playing cards. Also, the slip down lens cover doubles as an on-switch, which means the Sony DSC-T2 is ready and willing within seconds.

Small and compact the Sony DSC-T2 may be, but Sony has managed to pack it with excellent features, even with all that storage crammed in there! One of the best features immediately catches your eye: a glorious 2.7inch LCD screen that takes up pretty much all of the back panel. It’s a touch-sensitive screen as well, cutting down on the number of buttons on the back of unit, which makes things even neater.

The only controls on the back are a rocker switch for the 3x optical zoom lens and some buttons that provide access to the pictures in memory. With this lack of physical controls the touchscreen display needs to be responsive, and the menu systems intuitive: both of these are handled with the usual Sony panache, which makes day-to-day handling a breeze.

So, all the elements are in place for either a cracking camera or a massive disappointment depending on whether you are a glass half full or empty kind of person. Well, it’s the optimists that are proved right in this case, because in most respects this classy little Sony lives up to the hype created by its excellent feature set.

The thing we like first off is just how fast it acts. Compared to the likes of the FujiFilm Z100 this is a drug-fueled Olympic sprinter; from the fast start up to the quick response time you are less likely to miss the killer shot with the Sony DSC-T2 in your pocket than with pretty much any other stylish compact we’ve come across.

And it’s not just at the moment of impact that you’ll love this beauty, because back in front of your computer the quality of the images it produces will keep you smiling. The way it handles colours is first rate, with deep blues backed up by a whole range natural and realistic hues. The sunset shot of Bournemouth beach shows how good the Sony DSC-T2 is at bringing together the wonderful British climate, with natural greens and a selection of natural, red-tinged blues.

Okay, so there’s a hint of barrel distortion when the lens is set at its widest angle, but show us a compact camera that doesn’t suffer from a touch of that and we’ll show you the only model anybody would ever buy!

The other thing we love about this camera is the way it’s capable of taking images in near darkness, and still getting some kind of result. In this picture from row Q of a Neil young concert the detail may be lacking, but at ISO 400 it picked up enough information from the stage to jog our memory while not ending up with unsightly swatches of grain and retaining a real sense of deep dark blacks around the stage.

Elsewhere, there’s a slight softness to sharp edges when blown up to full pixel on pixel size, but apart from that the Sony DSC-T2 is spot on in all regards. It offers bags of detail, the face detection technology works, and even the small flash is capable of some decent results – although it’s better at providing a little bit of fill rather than lighting up a whole room of smiling partygoers.

While the Sony DSC-T2 could have quite easily been a sad case of style over substance, it proves itself to be a more than capable camera. It’s easy to use, fast and responsive, has bags of excellent features and takes a damn fine photo most of the time. What’s not to like!
