A man who calls himself SAL9000 is set to marry his virtual girlfriend from a video game called Love Plus this weekend.

The above is stolen straight from a Dallas headline. Apparently our love-struck gamer decided to take his love – the in game avatar Nene Anegasaki – on a honeymoon to Guam. Now, sadly, ‘Love Plus’ does not actually have a Guam in game. Thus, SAL9000 did the next logical thing and took his Nintendo DS with him to Guam, where he undoubtedly held hands with her through his stylus and attempted to advance the sex life of the relationship by getting the DS up the cartridge slot.

The man now plans to hold a public wedding reception in Tokyo this weekend which will also be livecast on Nico Nico Douga.

Ah, yes. Japan. The one country in the world that will embrace this match made in digital heaven. I will not be surprised if the company that produced ‘Love Plus’ uses this as a positive press moment and attempts to capitalize by actually programming the game to allow such a ceremony on this grand scale.

But all will not be love and roses in this relationship. In fact, it can  actually be quite short lived. Unfortunately for SAL9000, mistreating his so-to-be bride will cause her to leave him within the next 100 days!

The player can increase their abilities by studying, working out and solving problems of their virtual girlfriend, but if they fail to make their girlfriend happy, the game will restart after 100 days.

This is a great time to instead invest in World of Warcraft. There, your digital half-elf paladin bombshell will even do a dancing striptease for you.

Why Don’t You Play The Game?

Het laatste jaar is er in het buitenland een interessante beweging begonnen. Een beweging die meer openheid wil van de overheid (zoals de Open Government Working Group), die meer vrije toegang wil tot allerhande data(-sets) van de overheid. In de VS is er, op initiatief van Barack Obama, Data.gov. In Nederland heb je onder andere Hack de Overheid en bij uitbreiding ook Ambtenaar 2.0. In het Verenigd Koninkrijk is men ook bezig aan het open maken van data. Men maakt er blijkbaar gebruik van het internationale Comprehensive Knowledge Archive Network (CKAN), een project van de Open Knowledge Foundation.

Op vlak van de Europese Unie is er The Open Declaration, een tekst geschreven door enkele Europeanen die aandringen op een vernieuwing van de “public sector”:

The needs of today’s society are too complex to be met by government alone. While traditional government policies sought to automate public services and encourage self-service, the biggest impact of the web will be in improving services through collaboration, transparency and knowledge-sharing.

Europe should grasp this opportunity and rebuild the relationship between citizens and the state by opening up public institutions and by empowering citizens to take a more active role in public services.

As citizens, we want full insight into all the activities undertaken on our behalf. We want to be able to contribute to public policies as they are developed, implemented, and reviewed. We want to be actively involved in designing and providing public services with extensive scope to contribute our views and with more and more decisions in our hands. We want the whole spectrum of government information from draft legislation to budget data to be easy for citizens to access, understand, reuse, and remix. This is not because we want to reduce government’s role, but because open collaboration will make public services better and improve the quality of decision-making.

Deze tekst werd geschreven in het kader van de Raad Van Europa die in november bij elkaar komt, en het beleid op vlak van e-government voor de komende drie jaar zal bepalen. Uw taak: de declaratie lezen en goedkeuren!

In België is deze beweging minder aanwezig. Op CKAN vindt je voor “belgium” maar enkele data-sets, in PDF (dus niet zozeer machine-readable). En niet alle data-sets hebben een open licentie. Het waarom daarvan ontgaat me toch een beetje.

Er is hier ook een Open Source User Group for Public Servants, maar die heeft mijn inziens een verkeerde URL gekozen. De site gaat niet zozeer over een open overheid, maar wel over het gebruik van Free/Libre Open Source Software binnen die overheid. Dit is ook aan te moedigen, maar men zal snel vervallen in een religieuze discussie.

Maar waarom zou men open informatie willen van zijn overheid? Bijvoorbeeld om ons eigen leven makkelijker te maken! Recent werd nog een iPhone applicatie die toeliet om treinritten met de NMBS te plannen verwijderd uit de Apple App Store. In Londen is er bijvoorbeeld Nearest Tube, een iPhone applicatie die met behulp van augmented reality de dichtstbijzijnde metro-stations toont.

Een voorbeeldje dat we kunnen catalogeren onder de noemer “nice try” is de mobile mapping data en de verkeersbordendatabank. Als je die mobile mapping data dan wil bekijken in de Google Maps mash-up, dan krijg je geen verkeersbord te zien… Oplossing: maak die mobile mapping data toegankelijk in JSON of XML-formaat, en laat “het volk” betere (of überhaupt werkende) interfaces maken.

Besluit: onze overheid stelt wel data beschikbaar, maar

1. niet altijd in machine-readable form (FFS, een PDF?) en
2. niet altijd in een geschikte licentie (dikwijls ligt dit aan het feit dat privé-firma’s meegewerkt hebben aan projecten, en de overheid zich heeft laten ringeloren in het contract met die firma’s).

PPS: liefste Agentschap voor Geografische Informatie Vlaanderen (check it out, gewestplannen en al!), hou in godsnaam op met dode links (alhier gevonden)!

PPPS: openheid hoeft niet alleen bij de overheid, ook bij privé-firma’s kan dit handig zijn. Bijvoorbeeld coördinaten van bankautomaten. Handig als je in een vreemde stad of gemeente bent!

he is the best ever!

After a seemingly dreamless sleep I woke up once, looked at my clock (8:31! It said, 8:31!) and flopped my face back into my pillow.  Insert a vivid half-ass dream featuring people I had met last night.  I woke up and decided, “You know what?  It’s a Digital Love kind of day.”

So rock that song during my morning routine I did.

Is he married?” Someone my age, and yes, I was attracted to him, which means I did it on purpose.  Weird.  Just odd. Don’t know how I feel about that.

• Naar het Filmfestival van Oostende mogen gaan. Ne keer met Knijntje (Turks Fruit op een zondagnamiddag om 17u, wij twee en een koppel van 70 jaar ) en ne keer met de Jeronimo (Bathory, over een oldskool Hongaarse gravin die zogezegd maagdenbloed nodig heeft om jong te blijven. Goede film, zeker gaan loeren!).

• Een avondje doorbrengen met the one and only lovely miss Imke Dielen. Begin alvast uit te kijken naar de release van haar boek!
• Gaan karten met the Brussels Connection (ft dM3 & one third of the Revlon Spaz Queens) in Groot-Bijgaarden. Plezant parcours (binnen én buiten)!

This is in response to Mr. Polat’s comment about how it’s not very interesting to watch people sitting in front of their screens.  This comment was in relation to a post in the “contribute” section about writing a “new age romance”.  The reply ran a little long so Ms. Chang decided to put it on the main page of the blog.  Enjoy.

Before the advent of digital media and the interwebs, people used personals on the newspapers to meet people. there are stories about people meeting people on personals and they were either conned or murdered. Then there’s stories like Miss Lonelyheart (a novel by Nathanael West), where a columnist may become involved with people who write in to a newspaper love advice column (and this novel is not merely about people writing letters or sitting in front of a type-writer). I am sure there are plenty of sappy romance novels about how one find true love in a personal by accident, etc, etc. In other words, I think these are stories are about experiences/emotions that are derived from interacting with people they’ve never really met. But in the story that I want to write, it’s a newer, updated version that involves technologies or social networking tools and people’s new frame of mind that using a personal (or in our case, social networking sites) to find friends/dates has become less of a taboo, and it’s no longer just for the sad and the lonely.

To be more explicit, I guess I am thinking about all the people I have met so far online over the last year or so. As I mention in a different comment, fiction is always sort of a reflection, a fragment or an interpretation of reality. So I am reflecting on my own personal experience for this idea- I’ve met my last boyfriend online and I’ve made lots of awesome friends online since then as well. Some of these people I’ve met in person, some I haven’t.  For the ones I haven’t, I sincerely hope I will someday.  But most people that I keep in regular contact with now are people that I feel a connection with, romantically or otherwise. And if I were to write about my experience with these various people and it won’t involve the keyboard or staring at the screen at all.

I really like the notion of “digital” or “new age” romance. The media talks about virtual wars, but I don’t hear them talking about virtual love or friendship very much. Make love not war!!  If they have War 2.0 with UAVs, why can’t we have Love 2.0 with social networking tools?  Does this make any sense?   Mr. Polat, do you reckon there’s some potential?
