Web Project Management Lessons from Darth Vader

The other night a middle-aged man came up to us asking for some money. He said he had been kicked out of his house by his lady and had nowhere to go. Regardless off the truth of this account, he had such a smooth voice and reassuring presence that I happily reached into my pocket.

His great voice lead us to ask if he was a singer.  Yes he was he said. He offered to demonstrate. But our white guilt kicked in and we politely declined. However, as the man left, he offered us some musical knowledge. He said one of the greatest artists of all time in his eyes was a man called George Duke. Remember the name, he said. I made a note in my phone (the 21st century’s moleskine) certain I would otherwise forget.

Today I looked up Mr. Duke. The above image alone was enough to warm me to him. I was interested to read that he is widely considered to be one of the founding fathers of funk. His first song I played was “I Love You More”, and I was surprised to hear the sample from Daft Punk’s “Digital Love” in the introduction. But I probably shouldn’t be so surprised. After all, all things are connected.

So, allow me to pass on the man’s recommendation, and extend the chain towards you…

A friend of mine, no stranger to all things viral, is getting ready for the release of his first album and he has given me an advanced copy for review. So below you’ll find some of his viral videos from youtube, followed by a review of his new album!

This first video is one of Joey’s that went viral within the UConn community – his music video and song about Spring Weekend starring several other UConn celebs.

This next video is pretty long for normal TVV standards, but it pretty much tells the story of how Joey got into music and it’s a great lead-in for the album, considering the events of this video are what prompted him to move on to other methods of breaking in to the music industry.

So there you go. Now I don’t have to tell you.

The fruits of the labor that followed all of that come to us in the form of “More Famous Than You,” Joey’s first studio album. You can’t get your hands on it until July 6th, but here’s the scoop on my favorites off the ten-track album.

The second song, The Young & The Ruckus, is a much better intro to the album and to Joey himself. “The first name Joey and the last name Ruckus and I’m free for all… down for whatever.” The songs has a faster and poppier beat than the first and has an overall very “young” vibe to it. With some very quotable bits like “it’s a natural disaster when I’m gettin’ plastered” and “young is how we live,” it’s not hard to image this song being one of the more popular ones off the album.

Digitalove, the third track, has a very electric feel to it, with some borderline dubstep beats in the beginning.The feel fits the message, and the message is sex in the digital era. ”My tease is textual. I’m robosexual. You want a piece of it, you gonna get it all.” It’s all about those late night texting rendezvous – if you’ve got a digital lover than this is definitely your soundtrack.

Sweet Millions, number 5, is one of the catchier songs and definitely shows off the high end of Joey’s vocal range. Its a bit of an anthem for the self-made stars, the ones who just seem to have that magic it. “I never strut, no I sashay, cause the sidewalk is my runway.” The next song on the album, A List, is understandably paired with its predecessor, as it talks about the drive and love of living life on the A List. Two different takes on the same theme, but it’s Sweet Millions that I found myself humming more after I played the album through.

The next track that really pulled me in was number 9, called RSVP. It’s sort of a robotic take on Katy Perry’s “ET” – the ups and downs (or ins and outs?) of a robo-lover. ”It was hard to miss you. I never had a humanoid before and I couldn’t resist you.”  RSVP, as it turns out, stands for “robotronic, supersonic, volatonic, poison” but this shiny electro-lover is also “a frantic, steel romantic, chip-implanted person.” The lyrics move fast, but once you get them down its hard not to sing along.

The last song of the album, Glitter and Coal, is one of the slower songs on the album, for sure, but it shows how Joey’s voice works in a ballad as well as the poppy electric style song that dominates the album. And work it does. It’s a great way to end the album and I hope it s a sign of what’s to come from Joey Ruckus.

This guy absolutely kills the solo on ‘Digital Love’ by Daft Punk by using a Roland JX-3P.  I’ve never heard anyone else do this sound on their synth, and he just about has it perfect.  Not to mention, he can play that solo really well.  This is such a treat.  Don’t count out your cheaper gear just yet!
