Now that we are in the peak of winter’s grip, darkness and grayness are the hallmarks of the season.  So, I thought it might be a good time to remember the wonderful colours of autumn in Ontario.  At least the days are now getting a bit longer and it won’t be long before talk of spring becomes less hopeful and more realistic.  This image is part of Skywatch Friday.

I took these photos a while back during my night outing. I posted a couple of similar photos but these two are of a different store front window. I thought tonight would be an appropriate time to post them (if not now, when?).

Tomorrow I’m having Dad over for Christmas dinner. Actually breaking out the BBQ for this one – a nice pork roast. Typically, on Christmas day I go for a long walk along the boardwalk and enjoy the peace and quiet. Tomorrow’s supposed to rain, but I’ll probably venture out anyway, with camera in tow, of course.

Where I live, in Edmonton, Alberta, the North Saskatchewan River passes through our city. It’s a large, meandering prairie river by the time it reaches us from Banff National Park.

This is our source of drinking water in the throes of winter. The snow melt has almost completely stopped and only a few springs feed it at this time of year.

I hopped across it quite easily and it’s not as if there was more water hidden under the ice here. On the opposite side of the open water there was dry, frozen ground under a half meter of snow.

This photo was taken around 2:00 in the afternoon, close to winter solstice when our days are at their shortest. The light for most of the day is sunset or sunrise like. There is a touch of magenta during mid-day and close to the ends of daylight it turns more golden.

While I was tramping around in the snow, the temperature was around -12 C and a funny thing happened that I had never seen before. From the northwest, the direction of the Columbia Icefields, I could see a low fog rolling in over Graveyard Flats. Such a fitting name. Usually you see driftwood lying over the flood plain here giving the impression of a graveyard. I am guessing that is where the name came from. Perhaps someone could clue me in on that?

The days are now getting longer but not noticeably at least for a few weeks. Come late winter, the days get longer, quicker. Right now, I am enjoying the long shadows of mid-day.

I was never happy with this photo, mostly because it seemed rather orange to my eye and the lighting wasn’t working. So I played around with it this evening and I think I like it a lot better now. I dialled back on the saturation and adjusted the hue and make it a tad darker. Hope you like it.
