In a comment piece on marketing to the young, Mike Skapinker in the Financial Times quotes Carol Phillips, a marketing academic, who has done research  on how people respond  when reading Vogue.  The findings showed that younger people concentrated on the design, colour and font, whereas older readers focused on the content.

The way youngsters now take in information is so different that  the English lord chief justice said recently that lawyers might have to provide evidence on screens so that jurors could take it in better because they eree no longer used to sitting and listening.

We were given a photo in my Digital Illustration class and we had to recreate it with the pen tool, and gradients.  We then created graffiti  and have to free transform it onto one of the blank walls.  This is my finished piece.  I opted to take out the dining room table and chairs, as well as the couch for now so I can make the basics of the room look as real as possible.  I want to continue to work on it adding back in the furniture to make it look complete.  I’m pretty please so far.  I haven’t used gradients before this and it was a little tricky to get hte hang of, but I think it looks pretty realistic thus far.  Feel free to leave some feedback!

Es ist schon wieder vorbei, das geht immer viel zu schnell. Das YOUKI – das internationale Jugend Medien Festival – ist letzte Woche von 17. bis 21. November in Wels passiert, und wer nicht dort war, hat wieder mächtig was verpasst.

Unter komplett neuer Führung, heuer mit Peter Schernhuber als Chef überhaupt, wurde das Festival jünger, internationaler und sowieso über-drüber. Heuer hatte ich auch das erste Mal das Gefühl, dass das Internet während des Festivals selbst nicht ignoriert wurde, es gab also einen YouTube-Channel, einen Flickr-Stream und einen Festival-Blog. Die letzten beiden liefen über die Leute von subtext, die das recht fleißig betrieben. Nur der Flickr-Stream starb irgendwie nach dem ersten Tag, weil man keinen bezahlten Account hatte…

Gestartet wurde mit der Eröffnung am Dienstag Abend im MKH. Mit dem genialen Film 12 Explosionen von Johann Lurf wurde begonnen, und nach den obligatorischen Reden wurden noch zwei Ehrungen der Stadt Wels für zwei ehemalige Mitarbeiterinnen des Youki-Festivals vergeben, die Sponsoren (recht spaßig heuer) vorgestellt und dann noch mit den Filmen Höhenrausch von Siegfried A Frühauf und Foodfilm von Viktoria Schmid. Foodfilm war ein Film, der nur aus Fotogrammen bestand und so die Aneinanderreihung der Zutaten für Buchstabensuppe, Gulasch, Kaiserschmarren und Kaffee war. Und eben das Kochte der Shorty (“Herr Short, so viel Zeit muss sein!”) dann auch, während auch live-Visuals davon gemacht wurden. Aber ich habe vergessen, von wem. System Jacqeline vielleicht? Von denen ist jedenfalls auch der ziemlich feine heurige Festival-Trailer.

Eine der offiziellen Festival-Paparazza von System Jaqueline, und diese Dame hat auch mein Lieblingsfoto von dieser YOUKI geschossen.

Am Mittwoch startete dann das richtige Festivalprogramm, mitsamt den Wettbewerbsfilmen und dem anderen Programm, das heuer aus einer FM4-Filmreihe “Alternative Approach To Youth Culture”, aus den Film-Sofas, Media Meeting, und natürlich Parties bestand. Irgendwie hab ichs aber geschafft, jedes Filmsofa zu verpassen…

Der hier heißt Alexis Dos Santos, und ist ein ganz ein Lieber. Der argentinische Jungregisseur hielt heuer den Regie-Workshop, gewann mit seinem Film Unmade Beds 2009 völlig zu Recht den Crossing Europe-Publikumspreis und zeigte diesen und Glue heuer auf der Youki, noch Monate vor der regulären Veröffentlichung in Österreich. Unmade Beds kommt im Sommer in unsere Kinos und den sollte echt jeder sehen…

Am Donnerstag beschallte B Fleischmann mit Marilies Jagsch und Sweet Williams van Ghost den alten Schl8hof und sorgte damit bei den Youki-Besuchern für melancholische Träume. Das Trio könnt ihr so, nur mit weniger Gitarren, hier sehen.

Danach war natürlich noch längere Party im Schl8hof, es gab ja aucg genug Leute kennenzulernen. Den Freitag mit dem tollen Kleinstadtkonzert musste ich leider, leider sausen lassen.

Am Samstag war es dann soweit. Die Youki-Gala, der fulminante Abschluss und die Preisverleihung dieses Festivals, war da!

Den heurigen Sackerl-Award bekam Makka. Naja…

Den Special Award gewann, für mich berechtigt, doch nachher heiß diskutiert, der Schweizer Augustin Rebetez mit seiner Post-Party-Dokumentation Carnaval, in der er mit emotionsgeladenen Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen die beinahe melancholische Stimmung nach einer Party einfing. Scheinbar war es nur ein Teil einer zehnteiligen Serie, die ich irgendwann einmal gerne ganz sehen würde…

Die vier Würdigungspreise gingen an Bolzplatz von Lucas Drobek, The Third World War von Simon Sommer und Jakob Grasböck, an King Harry von der Wiener Gruppe „Freitagsrunde“ und an Asmus von Moritz Walter.

Gewonnen hat, noch viel umstrittener und heißer diskutiert, Railrunner von Fabian Uitz, der nur mit der Handy-Kamera gedreht wurde und mit zwei Fingern, die am Zugfenster “auf” den Gleisen dahinschlittern, die Musik- und Actionfilmgeschichte aufs Korn nimmt. Hier wurde vor allem die Idee ausgezeichnet, was allerdings auch zu Recht in Frage gestellt wurde. Mir persönlich gefiel die Idee, auch wenn mein persönlicher Favorit 21221 von Sebastian Kientl war, der allerdings gar nicht ausgezeichnet wurde, genauso wie mein Platz 2, Pastforward von Xenia Bluhm und Martin Kucera.

Die Youki-Kantine hat den ganzen Betrieb immer mit Essen und Trinken versorgt, und das sogar ziemlich vorzüglich. Für die Gala bereiteten sie eine Landkarte aus belegten Broten vor, das sich sowohl sehen als auch mit Genuss essen lies.

Zum Abschluss gabs noch Party mit DJ Robert Buchschwenter, der schon letztes Jahr recht tanzbar war, und heuer ziemlich aufdrehte.

Als Abschluss bleibts mir eigentlich nur zu sagen, dass ab Februar die Filme für Youki 11 eingereicht werden können, und ich noch auf die Bilder aus meiner Lomo gespannt bin.

Si bien esta nueva tecnología es de tener en cuenta, no se ve grandes efectos en el mercado de libro impresos en el corto plazo. Como menciona el artículo, los lectores digitales cuestan U$ 300-, lo cual es una alta inversión para la mayoría del público que lee entre tres o seis libros. Estamos hablando de U$ 50 por libro leído en un año y con el alto riesgo de obsolescencia en un período de desarrollo de esta tecnología.

Además es interesante analizar la costumbre del lector, al menos del argentino. Parte de la experiencia placentera de la lectura pasa por la relación con el elemento, libro papel. Aún en cuestiones laborales, mucha gente le cuesta leer textos largos en la pantalla de su PC y opta por imprimirlo.

También está la costumbre de prestar o pedir prestado un libro, algo difícil con el texto magnético, mientras no se popularicen los equipos. Además a la gente le gusta guarda los libros en sus bibliotecas, aun cuando las probabilidades de leerlo nuevamente sean bajas. Ellos pasan a ser parte del ambiente.

Quizás las generaciones más jóvenes, que nacieron con la internet y los mensajes de textos cambien esas costumbres, pero por ahora, difícilmente el mercado editorial se vea muy afectado por la nueva tecnología. Y llegado el momento, si se puede proteger el libro magnético, serán los sectores gráficos los que vean afectada su actividad, los editores seguirán siendo necesarios para realzar el trabajo del autor, darle fluidez a su obra y publicar los libros digitales.

I have realised recently that, although I take quite a few photos, I very rarely look at them once they are downloaded.

This is a result really of digital photgraphy.  With old ‘prints’, whether they were left in the little cardboard wallets or arranged in albums, it was easy to pick them up, have a quick perusal through them, and reminisce.

The only time I find myself going through digital photos on the computer is if I am looking for something specific, and then don’t really take the time to really studt them.  As a result, I have decided to print off some of my favourites through the www.snapfish.co.uk website.

In a funny way this has resulted in me having a good look through them to establish which are worth printing.  I am also going to get a few printed off to a larger size to hang up.

pokoknya skill-skill temen-temen gue di Intermedia bener-bener WAH deh, ada yang jago membuat website, ada yang jago digital drawing, ada yang jago skill gambarnya, ada yang mengambil gambar… dan jago-jago lainnya…

Today’s post is for beginners and it’s about scripting and storyboards. It will also provide links to a free scripting tool and free lesson plans. Want more than the basics? No worries. There will be plenty in the coming weeks for intermediate and advanced filmmaking! Even interviews with our professional judges! So come often and participate in the conversation.

I’ve got a nifty tool you can use to get started right away with a very fundamental part of filmmaking: the concept idea and scripting. Getting the idea/creative vision/inspiration for your film, video or one-shot wonder down on paper first is a good thing and this is much easier to do if you use a process called storyboarding. You have flexibility with a variety of ways you can get your ideas captured so do what works best for you. It’s more important to have a tight, all-inclusive and coherent roadmap for the process of completing your film that keeps you on track rather than worrying about which process to use.

For example, I frequently use Post-It Notes for my general outlining process so I can move them around on the wall easier as I hone my idea. I’ve used dry-erase boards, recycled paper, napkins, cardboard, anything I can draw on and tape to the wall — I’m kinda “old school” — that way, I can sketch little rough visual pictures of things like captions, props needed, camera angels, look and feel references, stuff like that. It almost looks like a crude comic strip. It’s not meant to be perfect at this initial stage — just capturing thoughts and ideas down.

I also jot down any little odd thing through this part of the concept brainstorming process. Items that may seem irrelevant or too detailed in the early stages still get their little notations and then go into a grouping we call the “parking lot” for later. You can do that too. This Post-It Note process also allows for my team members to add their thoughts and ideas as well. I prefer to collaborate with a team of diverse skill sets and thinking to get the best ideas flowing.

Then I grab my computer and take all of the little Post-It Notes info and dump them into a more polished electronic scripting formatting tool similar to Kids’ Vid Storyboarding Tool — it’s free and easy to use. It’s a fantastic way for beginners to jump right in. I know plenty of creative people who storyboard right on their computer. It doesn’t matter what you prefer so I’ll repeat this again — don’t let the process stop your creativity. Go with the flow that fits your comfort zone and then loop back around and put it into a process to keep you focused, on track, on time and on budget! Storyboarding tools are a great way to help with this process.

Additionally, on Kids’ Vid, you’ll see a variety of good fundamental information important to getting you started with a solid foundation if you’re a fledgling young filmmaker. For educators, this site is simple to understand and provides resources to incorporate video production into your classroom curriculum. With 2010 fast approaching, it’s definitely time for another OpenMusicMedia Toronto meetup. Building on the success of our inaugural meet in September, we are going to cover the ongoing discussion about access vs. ownership and what it means to the music fan, the artist, and of course the industry as a whole.

With music services such as Spotify, MOG, Last.fm, and Grooveshark (only to name a few) increasing in popularity due to their ease in delivering music content as a seamless experience across both desktop and mobile devices – does this spell the end for iTunes and the whole notion of actually needing to own content?

The Globe and Mail recently took a look at Spotify and what it means for both the traditional and new players within the music industry. We are experiencing a transformative change in business models and the way music is consumed. Will subscription streaming services be a sustainable model? Will consumers pay for a bundling deal (ISPs, telcos) that gives them access on their computers and more importantly, on their mobile devices? Are there times when ownership is important? What are main benefits of the streaming model? Without a doubt, music streaming is here to stay and will likely co-exist with download service for the foreseeable future.

We are proud to have Greg Nisbet (founder of Toronto music startup Mediazoic) join us. Greg’s experience developing a real-time broadcast streaming platform and his work with various people in radio, the labels and technology will offer us a unique perspective as he kicks off the discussion for the evening.

Over the last few months there’s been lots of talk about Augmented Reality. John Mayer launched an augmented reality enhanced music video and dozens of apps popped up for the smartphones utilising this technology. So it’s no surprise that with print in a slow decline, Esquire have jumped on the bandwagon.

This month sees Decembers issue of Esquire come to life when you log on to their website.

The front cover boasts celebrity content with Robert Downey Jr introducing the issue, whilst throwing in a quick plug of his new movie Sherlock Holmes. The rest of the AR features all supplement content in the print magazine. In one of the fashion features, tilting your magazine in different directions controls the weather, and the model adjusts clothing appropriately. There’s also a time-based joke – check out the AR component after midnight and the content changes.

There’s already been quite a buzz about this campaign and whilst I wouldn’t expect it to become the norm, it’s definitely been a great way of generating word of mouth marketing as well as encouraging new readers to the magazine.

I hav a dream. And that dream is to cre8 my vry own facebook appy. It will be called FUCKVILLE, and its appeal is quite logical y’all. Basically, various small, lonely animals will wonder in and out of your fbook profile, and you will be offered the chance 2 ‘fuck them’.
