On Thursday, November 19th and Friday, November 20th at The Avalon in Hollywood, The Deftones performed two impassioned and unforgettable shows to benefit their friend and band mate, Chi Cheng. The band performed in a bid to raise money for the mounting medical costs incurred by Chi’s car accident.

Over the past month or so I went to some real neato deato smeato concerts. (Are we still calling them concerts? What are the hipster losers calling them these days? Rawk shows? Gigs? Smegma?)
First up was Thursday and Far at Bowery Ballroom. Oh yeah and the terrible opening band, Midnight Masses. Some of the most boring music I’ve heard in a long time and their performance was even more boring. This is exactly the kind of crap that Pitchfork is going to tell you is so hip right now. It was kind of sad actually because all six members sang but they did the most boring harmonies and background lines possible. It’s really a waste to have that many people in a band that can sing and just have them doing “ahhhhhhhh” on one note for a whole song. So I’m sure this time next year this band will be huge and having Carrie Underwood open for them.
Far was amazing as expected. I’ve been listening to them for over ten years and it was great to finally see them live. They didn’t play any new material from their upcoming which was good idea I believe. I was surprised that at least half of the audience seemed to know the songs and that some mini pits broke out. It’s too bad that the only shirts they had were youth small since I clock in at over 500 pounds.
Thursday played their “breakthrough” album, Full Collapse, from front to back. Personally, I would have preferred to hear War All The Time instead but Full Collapse translates better live than the recording. Geoff, the singer from Thursday, had also joined Midnight Masses and Far each for a song so that was something that happened. After playing Full Collapse Thursday played about six more songs including Jet Black New Year, which is scientifically their best song for sure. I’ll be seeing them again in December and hopefully they’ll play some of the better songs off of Common Existence. Also playing that show will be Dillinger Escape Plan(!), Glassjaw(!!!!!!) and United Nations(?!). When we got flyers for this while waiting in line we thought it was a joke because the lineup is almost too good to be true.

Sorry ladies, take your tampon napkin somewhere else!

The next night I saw Far at the Mercury Lounge. The two opening were both crap in their own way. The first band was trying to do some Elvis Costello nerd pop nonsense and the second listened to way too much of Finch’s What It Is To Burn. Luckily Far destroyed everyone’s face. They got to pull out some more songs than the night before and even did a little of a bit new song, which was pretty chill and about Chi from the Deftones who has been in a coma for over a year now. I hope the new album isn’t junk and that they stop by to visit me again.
The last show I went to was Pinback at the Irving Plaza. I saw them there before and for a bigger venue it’s pretty cool. Pinback seemed kind of tired this time around. I’ve seen them about 10 times at this point and I’ve never heard them play the songs at the actual tempo that’s on the album before. Maybe they’re getting too comfortable on their new rock star tour bus. It was still a good show and Rob Crow can do no wrong in my eyes. Speaking of Rob Crow, he did some karaoke before the opening band and invited people from the audience to come up and sing a song as well. I thought it was a much better way to kill time before the opening band than staring at an empty stage for an hour. Once again, the opening band was junk. I really didn’t need to hear some more indie garage rock that Pitchfork probably loves. Pinback didn’t even have a new tour ep this time around. I mean if you’re going to tour behind the same album again you might as well take some more of my money.

Cockaoke.

I’m seeing Cave In this week. It should be a good show but I’ll be missing at least the first opening band since I’m playing a show in the city earlier in the evening. I probably won’t be missing much but you never know. I like to at least give the opening bands a chance even if their recorded material is crap. Some bands are just much better live and aren’t very good at capturing that on a cd. I’m looking at you One Minute Silence and Filter (besides Short Bus).
I’ll probably be seeing Melt-Banana again too. They always put on a great show and I feel a certain kinship with them. Wink…

They’ve been labelled innovators, sell-outs and even “the Radiohead of metalcore”. DILLINGER ESCAPE

They’ve been labelled innovators, sell-outs and even “the Radiohead of metalcore”. DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN bassist LIAM WILSON catches up with TOM HERSEY to talk about the band’s philosophy on maturing and how live shows can benefit from amateur pyrotechnics.

It’s hard to imagine reading press about the Dillinger Escape Plan without the subject of change being at the forefront. Since collaborating with Mr. Bungle/Faith No More/Peeping Tom’s Mike Patton in 2002, change, along with guitarist Ben Weinman, seems to be the only constant in a band that more and more people outside the metal and hardcore underground are starting to notice. Maybe it was the influence of collaborating with Patton, something of an alternative music forefather, but after the Irony is a Dead Scene EP, subsequent releases have challenged the dubious labels (math metalcore, does that even make sense?) fans and critics assigned the band.

Despite whatever criticisms have been levelled at the band, last year’s Ire Works album saw the Dillinger Escape Plan reach new levels of popularity. The album moved 11,000 copies in the first week and was a critically praised by the alternative music media. The world over, people started taking notice of what the Dillinger Escape Plan were doing, much to the surprise of even the band members. “When we were on tour in Europe this February I remember Greg turning to me between songs at a concert and saying ‘at what point did we become a real band over here?’”

Closer to home, the album’s first single, Black Bubblegum, was placed on a fairly regular rotation on Triple J. Keeping listeners in touch with the heavy metal underground… through a pop song that makes liberal use of Greg Puciato’s falsetto vocals.

The doors that Black Bubblegum has opened for the Dillinger Escape Plan have been almost unimaginable considering their humble beginnings as a math metal band from New Jersey. They’ve even performed the song on Conan! But for all the attention Black Bubblegum has brought the band, Liam reiterates that the Dillinger Escape Plan still know what they do best. “Black Bubblegum and songs like it serve as a dynamic contrast in our catalogue. We’re trying to make songs like Lurch pop out as more aggressive and the only way to do that is to pair it next to a Black Bubblegum.”

Although it might piss off a fan or two, Liam says that Black Bubblegum will be played when Dillinger tour Australia. It almost seems like an anomaly, playing pop songs during the infamously intense DEP shows, which in the past have been violent, crazy and just down-right dangerous.

“A lot of it is to make the whole thing unforgettable. I think too many shows these days are too safe. There’s really a lack of a danger element. I remember going to shows when I was younger and not wanting to tell my parents where I was going or who I was going to see. Coming home with a bruise or something worse was a rite of passage and we’re just trying to keep that going… that danger element, the idea that things aren’t always choreographed. We just don’t want people to watch us like we’re on TV. We want them to feel that they’re really there and that we could hurt ourselves or they could hurt themselves. It’s about letting a crowd know that we’re not safe and that our shows aren’t totally rehearsed to the point of antiseptic performance.”

However, as the five-piece career continues in quantum leaps, the recklessness of their past dissipates in a sea of logistics. Now even the spontaneous on-stage fire breathing of Greg Puciato is scrutinised and the subject of careful risk assessment.

“There was a time when it was totally unrehearsed and there would be days when it would even surprise me. All of a sudden I’d turn around on stage and be like ‘oh shit, I’m going to stand over here’. However unfortunately, in this day and age where people have been killed in nightclub fires a lot of the clubs we play will hire fire marshals that we have to pay for because of the fact that it could happen. It’s a lot harder for us to pull it off now without discussing it first. We’re playing bigger rooms and it’s gotten to the stage where we can’t always have the small show intimacy when we’re playing larger venues. So there are times when we’ve got to prepare for it and get certificates from fire marshals to make sure everyone’s safe. It takes an element out of it because it’s not as spontaneous but it still happens and when it happens it’s no less safe then when it was a surprise.”

As for the kind of stage shows Australian cities will get, Liam is tight-lipped. “I’m not sure what Australia’s going to get. It’s not like we can throw a torch on a plane with the rest of the gear, so it’s a matter of figuring out whether we can piecemeal that together when we get there.”

Irrespective of what bells and whistles Aussie DEP fans will be treated to, it’s apparent that there’s going to be a series of killer high-energy shows in the spirit of underground legends who never made it to our shores.

“I remember going to see bands like the Bad Luck 13 Riot Extravaganza and A.C. and it wasn’t JUST about the music for these bands. There was so much more going on, there was an attitude that was like a fire. In this day and age there are so many bands who are getting a little bit sucked up into treating playing a concert like a day-job.”

Listening to the bands Liam mentions you get a sense of alienating punk rock aggression (so abrasive, in fact, A.C. even have a song ironically entitled ‘Anyone who likes the Dillenger Escape Plan is a Faggot’). It’s this kind of confronting aggression that the Dillinger Escape Plan has cleverly and subtly harnessed to write music that continue to challenge and even piss off fans. In this context, you get the sense that Black Bubblegum and Sick on Sunday were the Dillinger Escape Plan’s way of writing songs like the A.C. classic, All Our Fans are Gay.

Artist: Horse The Band Album: Desperate Living Label: Vagrant Records Website: http://www.vagrant.co

Artist: Horse The Band
Album: Desperate Living
Label: Vagrant Records

Horse The Band in completely unclassifiable! Not to mention inaccessible to the masses. From where I sit, that is the beauty of this band. In a world where bands like Papa Roach put out an album every 3 years and change their sound to the chic sound at the moment, it is nice to see other bands writing progressive music that is different. To say “Desperate Living” doesn’t fit any classification is a breath of fresh air for this reviewer.

HTB has been classified as Nintendocore, post rock, hardcore and post-hardcore. This album you just need to listen to it all the way through. I have listened to it 4 times over the last few days and I am going to write down the 11 points I jotted down, because these notes pretty much sum up this album:

1) Shai Hulud, Converge, Dillinger Escape Plan noise core/hardcore vocals and music patterns

2) 80’s synth

3) Faith No More like tangents and experimentations

4) Super Mario Bro’s (if you have a USB joystick, you can play for free online- click the link) loops and samples

5) Bruising thrash

6) Moving mood music via synth with a 80’s movie dramatic flare

7) Songs are a patchwork of different parts, no consistency!

8) Nothing remotely accessible to radio

9) Grooving one second, woodpecker loops the next. Techno dance, metal then piano symphony. How odd and all fun!

10) The collision of New Age, Noisecore and 80’s syth with some thrash elements

11) “Arrive” is a radio song, but still too far removed from the mainstream for the feeble American mind to wrap its head around. HaHa! Playing this track live would be a hoot!

I will leave you with this. “Desperate Living” takes incredible amount of talent and vision to pull off. The production work is fantastic and the seamless blending of sounds is perfectly executed. For many, the Nintendo samples will annoy them, but for me there was just enough to keep it interesting. In the end, Horse The Band is the epitome of progressive and “Desperate Living” is a refreshing variety of sound in a world of imitation for the almighty dollar. My suggestion is to listen to this album as one song, give it three listens and I guarantee you will really dig a vast majority of it.

Rating: 9 out of 10
Suggested Tracks:

Track Listing:

1) Cloudwalker
2) Desperate Living
3) The Failure Of All Things
4) HORSE the song (featuring K-SLAX)
5) Science Police
6) Shapeshift (featuring Jaime Stewart)
7) Between The Trees
8) Golden Mummy Golden Bird
9) Lord Gold Wand of Unyielding (featuring Lord Gold and His Purple Majesty)
10) Big Business (featuring Ed Edge)
11) Rape Escape (featuring Valentina Lisitsa)
12) Arrive

I had to include this video from Erik in the band promoting the record. So funny- not exactly marketing genius! But wicked funny!

A bit of proggy metal today by Canadians Protest The Hero. This 2008 release, Fortress, has elements of metalcore, math and even a wee bit of death every now and again. For some reason all I can think of when I hear this is a modern Iron Maiden, I think its the slightly operatic vocal style.

Best song is the lead single and first song on the album Bloodmeat, the music (but definitely not the singing) reminds me of a Converge/Dillinger crossover

And just to show how good his voice actually is, this is Bloodmeat live

Sequoia Throne is worth a mention as well, even if it is just because in the video the singer is rocking an awesome ‘tache. The song also moves through so many styles its unreal.

Have you seen the ridiculous setlist for the final NIN show? This is the way a band is supposed to go out. 3+ hours. 37 songs. Guest musicians like The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gary Numan, Dave Navarro, Mike Garson, and Atticus Ross. Just incredible. I wish I could have been there.

Thankfully, Mr. Reznor has instituted a “relaxed” recording policy for as many shows as he’s been able to this summer. This means that as long as you don’t have big professional equipment, you can record whatever you want at these shows. This also means that we get to see pretty high quality fan-filmed footage and feel like we were kinda there. So, here’s the show:

1. Home

2. Somewhat Damaged

NIN

There’s not much to say. Last night marked the final performance for Nine Inch Nails for the foreseeable future and I was standing 5 feet from the stage. It doesn’t get much better than that. In fact, it might not get any better than that. Unless, of course, NIN says “just kidding” and start touring again next year.

The thing is – it didn’t seem to matter where you were standing for this show – everybody who was there was just happy to be there. I saw a post from a woman who was in the furthest seat back in the balcony and she sounds as moved and excited as me.

It hasn’t really hit me yet that this is the last time we’ll be seeing this band perform live, especially since I got used to seeing them almost every-other day during these final four shows. I even ran out of black t-shirts to wear. I’ll post some videos, pictures, and the setlist below, but let’s start at the beginning.

Enough said

Any Nine Inch Nails show is an experience, but the experience of this show began with fans trying to get tickets during the original on-sale and people traveling in from around the world to be at what was actually supposed to be the second-to-last show ever. As evidenced on the tour posters and shirts, the schedule changed last-minute when Trent became too sick to perform following the initial show at The Palladium. This meant the Henry Fonda (2nd) and Wiltern (3rd) shows had to be rescheduled. The Echoplex show, which was originally billed as the final show, went on as scheduled last Sunday, making it the 2nd show instead of the last show. Confused? Imagine how the bosses, family members, spouses and friends of all the people who took time off work, traveled across the country (or from other countries), and camped outside days before each show felt! I met people who couldn’t tell their family they were in town from Chicago because they surely wouldn’t understand why they popped over to LA for a day to see Nine Inch Nails, but haven’t visited the family in a year. But in the end it all worked out. Trent was well enough to perform the shows the way Nine Inch Nails is known and will be remembered for, and some fans who couldn’t previously get tickets were able to get into the rescheduled shows (although others who originally planned to be there had to return home to their jobs and families).

Speaking of family – Nine Inch Nails fans are family in a way that I haven’t experienced with any other band. There are definitely communities of fans that become friends through their shared love of a band. And jam band fans in particular run into each other while following their favorite band around the country. But Nine Inch Nails fans might as well be blood relatives. They look out for each other and NIN in a way that only a protective family member would. And the band does the same for their fans. In a fairly successful attempt to eliminate the scalping of tickets for these shows, Nine Inch Nails controlled all ticket sales, limited 2 tickets per person, printed the buyer’s name on the tickets, required ID of the buyer for ticket pick up, both the buyer and the buyer’s guest had to be present to pick up the tickets and then a wristband was placed on both people for entrance into the show. When the band found out that somebody was purchasing large quantities of event shirts and selling them on eBay (causing shirts to sell out at the venue before the fans who were there could purchase one), they limited people to one t-shirt per customer. And although they announced their Summer tour would be their last, Nine Inch Nails realized the impact this would have on their fans and added these final intimate club dates as a proper send-off. And then they played their souls out.

A small section of the line that spanned for blocks

Driving up to The Wiltern was quite a sight. I passed by the venue Wednesday at midnight and there were already a good 15 – 20 people camping outside. Dave Navarro also stopped by, brought water and snacks for the fans, and hung out for a bit. Then, by 2:00pm Thursday, the line wrapped around the block so that you could look through the alley and wave to the people waiting on the next street over.

The funniest thing to see were these huge straw patio umbrellas that several people seemed to have. It was HOT outside and once people discovered that Ralph’s sold patio furniture, they cleaned them out. Straw patio umbrellas were only $8 and they sold out in a flash. This was also one of the few places where the line for the men’s restroom was longer than the women’s. At one point, a guy drove by, blasting Lady GaGa. If you drive by hundreds of Nine Inch Nails fans, with Lady GaGa as your soundtrack, you deserve the ridicule you receive. There was a fan who walked up and down the line, giving everybody candy. “I’ve stood in this line 3 times (for the previous shows). I know how it is,” she said. Somebody asked me, “is there a show happening here?” I answered, “no” – you’ve got to be at least one step ahead of that for me to respond to you seriously. Somebody asked a guy next to me “who’s playing?” and the guy, who had been answering that question since he arrived at 7:30am said, “Michael Jackson.” Now, you might not think that’s funny. But the person’s response was, “oh – cool!” and that’s either funny or scary. Then, there’s the “t-shirt douche” – the guy who bought NIN event shirts en mass and tried to sell them on eBay for more than $200 each. As soon as fans figured out who this guy was they took a picture of him and posted it online (along with some additional descriptive graphics added in Photoshop). They shared it on Twitter and in the NIN forums and told everybody to be on the lookout for the “t-shirt douche.” But what was even better than that is that people passed out fliers with the guy’s picture on it while everybody was waiting in line. So now you have a line of several hundred people, holding these fliers that look like an R-rated version of an “America’s Most Wanted” poster and what happens? The “douche” walks by, head down, as fans call him out and require him to leave. Do not f*ck with Nine Inch Nails fans.

Once inside, there were the celebrity sightings: Tony Hawk, Ron Jeremy (for whom the crowd chanted and cheered), Rick Rubin, Tony Kanal (No Doubt), and Penn Jillette. But mostly there was the anticipation, excitement, and a bit of sadness that loomed in the air as everybody waited for Nine Inch Nails to take the stage for the last time. The show was amazing. All of these shows have been. I’m actually afraid to see live music for a little while because it’s going to take a lot to move me after this.

There are Artists, Musicians, Singers, Composers, Performers, and Songwriters. Some people are only one of those; Trent Reznor is all of them. He writes some of the most beautifully composed music you’ll hear. His music constricts and expands, extremely intense at times and then giving you space to breathe and expand with the notes. He has the ability to take all those sounds he hears in his head, and to articulate and translate them into something I can hear, process, and that moves my soul. His voice is exquisite – speaking and singing – I could listen to him for days. He’s honest and raw and 100% who he is – whether you (or he) like it or not – which makes his performances as real and authentic as they get. He’s given us 20 years of exceptional music and outstanding live performances. Even if you don’t like him, you gotta love him.

The set list was 3-4 pages in length and they played for over 3 hours. Dave Navarro joined for a couple songs, as did The Dillinger Escape Plan, Mike Garson (Bowie), and Gary Numan. When they came out for the second encore Trent asked the crowd, “Are you guys tired?” Of course the crowd screamed “no!” and cheered. “No? Ok, I’m gonna test you.”

Although I don’t typically post set lists, I’m doing it for these shows because they’re the last shows and you can tell that a lot went into constructing a set in-line with such an event. So here it is:

After listening to the Atreyu cover of Bon Jovi earlier I have just been listening to cover versions

After listening to the Atreyu cover of Bon Jovi earlier I have just been listening to cover versions all day, I remember back when you could find a punk version of anything (usually by Me First And The Gimme Gimmes). They all followed the exact same format and were generally a bit crap after the comedy of the first listen wore off. Now everything seems to be hardcore covers, but then again everything seems to be ‘hardcore’ nowadays.

Anyway have my top 5 cover versions, in no particular order.

First up A Static Lullaby doing Toxic by Britney Spears. This is just brilliant because they actually made a music video for it!

Goldfingers cover of 99 Red Ballons is probably the most well known punk cover, I swear I used to think this was the original!

Now for something a bit different have the most savage band in the world covering (very accurately) the most savage electronic artist in the world

How about a rap cover? This is cool because the band went out of there comfort zone and did it in the original style. Hot Rod Circuit covering Gin and Juice.

And finally just because I love the original so much and because Attack Attack! sound exactly like Enter Shikari, have some I Kissed A Girl originally by the lovely Katy Perry.

Hmm five is not enough have some more as well!

Dillinger Escape Plan did a cover of NIN’s wish and then they played it onstage with them in Perth which looked awesome! so have that video

Have them doing Hot For Teacher as well

Have another rap cover as well, this time Notorious Thugs followed by Men In Black

I have loads more I want to do but i think i’ll give you all a rest now!

DEP just posted up a 12 second snippet on youtube of a song from there new album, which I cannot wait for! if its half as good as Ire Works it will shit on everything else in music.

No, not a news post, just a post dedicated to one song.

After Johnny Cash’s stunningly moving cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” it seems as if it’s being taken over by the alt.country scene. Here’s a video of Over the Rhine (Karin Bergquist on vocals) with Kim Taylor singing background vocals:

[source: Bill Ivester, 3rd & Lindsley/Nashville, TN on 7/20/09]

I wonder if Trent even does this song anymore? Seems like a rare occasion where a cover song trumps the original, and I think the Cash version will actually live on longer.

Here’s Johnny’s video of “Hurt”:

And, if you’re not tired of the song, here’s Georgia metal band Sevendust doing the Cash version:

Pahoittelen muuten kuvien keskinkertaista laatua.

Kuten sanottua, nykyartistit eivät ainakaan Suomessa rohkene avoimesti ottaa poliittisesti kantaa asioihin.

Jostain syystä oma kiinnostukseni Rubikia kohtaan on viime aikoina vähentynyt. Ensimmäinen levy koostui mielestäni lähinnä City and the Streetsista ja joukosta täytebiisejä, toiseen täyspitkään en ole edes tutustunut. Livenä Rubik on ihan kohtuullinen.

Tiukka keikkatahti jatkui Orffin ja Dalcrozen jälkeenkin, sillä Kolmoslavalla esiintyi heti seuraavaksi ennakkoon yksi festarin kiinnostavimmista kiinnityksistä, venäläinen Everything Is Made In China.

Postrockahtelevaa venäläisindietä olikin saapunut seuraamaan ilahduttavan suuri joukko ihmisiä. Moni oli varmasti tutustunut bändiin Ilosaarirockin verkkosivujen kautta, mutta toiset saattoivat tuntea bändin jo entuudestaan, sillä se on piipahtanut Suomessa ainakin kerran aikaisemminkin, muistelisin että Tampereen Monsters of Pop -tapahtumassa.

Everything Is Made in Chinan musiikki oli ilahduttavan kekseliäästi post-rockin ja indien parhaita puolia yhdistelevää, paikoin eteeristä, paikoin hyvinkin rokkailevaa tavaraa.
