Laminates and Veneers

A few years ago when I was making my entertainment unit using pine veneered onto MDF (at the time it was what I could afford, and meant I didn’t have to do massive amounts of joinery to get the large panels I needed). At that stage, the company I used (Australian Wood Panels) had an impressive array of veneered panels you could choose from – jarrah, blackwood, walnut, pine etc etc – about 10-15 different timbers.

It seems in recent times they are now primarily limited to raw MDF and ply (and melamine), and you have to order in the veneered panels (I’m talking about 1200×2400 veneers, not something you can do in the shed with a vacuum bag, or an iron!)

If anyone knows where a decent range of veneered panels on different cores can still be sourced, I’m sure there will be people interested in knowing.

Entertainment Unit

An old photo of the entertainment unit from years ago – at least 6 years ago, if not more. The unit wasn’t completed in this photo – still had the doors to go (all raised panel for the 4 lower ones, and glass for the 2 display cabinets) (and I don’t think I ever took a photo of the unit completed). It is now scattered around the house – the two side modules are still there, but the TV when upgraded to a plasma no longer fitted, so the central module is now in a different room, and the TV itself is now in the shed! (Even the digital camera used is ancient – 0.3MP)

Boy, some of these photos go back! Back to the old shed days when I still had plenty of room in it! Triton Workcentre there in the foreground, GMC lathe in the background.

Assembly and finishing

Back in the days before I had grass – the back yard was sand, and that’s my dingo asleep beside the blue rubbish bin. As you can see from this photo, I finished as I went, so areas that were going to be hard to get a decent finish on after assembly were pre-done. All finished with a jarrah stain and Ubeaut traditional wax. The sides, and shelves are pine veneered MDF, the fronts are solid pine (so I could rout detail into them, and for added strength for hinges etc. I mush have done a pretty good job of the build as the cabinets are still going strong.

Wolf-like? Wild? Those words definitely point to trouble. But, being vertically-challenged, I was just walking along the show grounds when I inadvertently found myself under the shadow of… yep… you guessed it… a DINGO!!!!

A strange Sunday

Sunday was one of those days when all I could seem to do was lounge on the sofa and read, in that semi-dream state where words mingle with reality. In the morning I took a sojourn among The Sea Kings of Mars thanks to Leigh Brackett. I have had the Fantasy Masterworks volume of her stories for some years, and was two thirds of the way through the titular story when I realised I had read it before. Later that afternoon, having had a nice chat with Garth Nix at World Fantasy, I returned to Sabriel and as with all good books, found a little more than I had the last time I lost myself in its pages.

I’ve been listening to audio and video recordings of Australian aboriginal speakers for the story I am researching. I would love to find a phonetic transcription so I can see the dialect represented on the page. If anyone knows of such a thing, please let me know. I’ve also been reading about the Stolen Generations. I’m wary of touching on a subject like this without any personal connection to it, but the story has taken me there so I think I have to trust it.

Learning new words and phrases in another language is such a novelty. It is even more interesting for Australians living on a giant english speaking Island who would use subtitles in live conversations if they could.

I always try to learn Hello and Thank you when I am new to a country. I find that people open up so much more and are so appreciative that you made even the slightest effort.

So here are 5 of myfavourites that I have picked up along the way. Please feel free to use them at your leisure. (Sorry, they are spelt phonetically to a degree.)

1. DAS IST MEINE HAMBURGER
Germany

We learnt this in year 7 German class from a hilarious text book and now whenever I meet someone from Germany I feel it my duty to say it. It means THIS IS MY HAMBURGER. It is particularly funny when used out of context!

2. ESTOY PEDA, BESAME
Mexico

A hilarious car ride in Mexico City with some random new friends and an impromptu language lesson has firmly imprinted this saying in my mind. My english speaking friend actually taught me this one, only to ask me what it meant a few days later when I repeated it to her.
It means – I’M DRUNK, KISS ME. You will have Mexicans rolling on the ground laughing when you murmur these words.

3. NO ME MOLESTES!
Spain

In 2006, I was a fresh faced traveller on my first trip to Spain staying in my first ever hostel. A lovely lady from Argentina and a girl learning Spanish from England decided to help me in my naivety and protect me from some of the more passionate Spanish men. They said ” You are blonde with blue eyes and you must learn this phrase- NO ME MOLESTES” What does it mean?
DO NOT TOUCH ME or GET AWAY FROM ME!! I loved it!

This phrase came in particularly handy at the La Tomatina Festival in Bunol, Spain. At this festival there is a goal of ripping off as many people’s t-shirts as possible, so when my friend was wrestling with a feisty young man I simply said “No me molestes” and he said…. Lo siento…Sorry and left! VIVA ESPANIA!

4. JELDI CHELLO
India

I was in India in 2005 with my father for a business trip and on a rare day off we went out into the desserts of Rajasthan to see some incredible Forts and temples. For some unknown reason Dad and his friend wanted to stop on the side of the road to look at some shiny metal nestled in some of the rocks. It was 45 degrees celsius and we were in the middle of no-where…. so I asked our guide how do you say HURRY UP!

JELDI CHELO.
I now love using this when around my Indian friends as they just love to see the young blonde girl shouting at everyone to hurry up… and in Hindi none the less.

5. I’M DRY AS A DEAD DINGO’S DONGER
Australia

I know this is one from my homeland but it is too good to pass up and the look you get when you say it to a foreigner is just priceless. It’s not a phrase I would use in my daily repertoire but it is a well know old Aussie saying. My Dad, being an expat from the UK, just loved it when he first heard it when they arrived here back in the 80’s and he loves to use it occasionally in front of visitors.

Simply means I’M THIRSTY. But the imagery associated with it is probably the true magic in the saying.

Enjoy these phrases next time you visit these countries or meet someone of that country. I hope you at least get a laugh…. preferably not a slap in the face

Airline kicked ma and baby off

The young’un was restless and disrupting the take off procedures so they kicked them off the plane, then the airline spokesman apologized, refunded their tickets and granted them with a 300 bucks coupon.

Story solved, you’d say, but I again cannot help but wonder… Thing is, ever since people became so, well, liberal (i.e., breastfeeding in public and bringing their kids to movies only to read to them out loud), everybody’s hurting.

Now I don’t have anything against mothers, babies, families, whatever… But this is just wrong. Bloody admit it. Takin’ yer bay-bee on the plane, or to a restaurant and such, and letting them cry out till all the passengers/clients kill themselves is just plain wrong. Maybe someone should invent a safe capsule to put on the baby’s head so they could talk and scream to themselves, with a pair of earphones the mother can connect to the capsule so only she can hear the bay-bee (just in case the young’un needs food or something).

Now I can’t help but think of the famous Elaine quote: “Maybe dah DINGO ate yo’ bay-bee.”

Bygone.

Maybe #KyleWellwood Ate Your T-shirt

As we noted earlier this week, Kyle Wellwood and his now epic faux-besity is the toast of Twitter. We commemorate the triumph with SHB’s debut t-shirt, which can be found at SHB’s new t-shirt shop, Short Handed Schwag.

Mr. Wellwood was the unfortunate victim of a Mike Komisarek slap shot in Saturday’s fan-hyped Leafs-Canucks game – an injury that couldn’t have possibly come at a worse time as his internet popularity was, ahem, “trending” upwards. We wish the best for K-dub and hope he’s back on his feet again soon devouring small children and planets alike.

If you don’t get the “dingo” reference, A) god help you and your Seinfeld-less existence, and 2) jump on the video clip from Season 3’s episode “The Stranded” that follows. And thank me later.

Anyway, I am currently learning German. In a class. Yes, I do believe in a classless society, but this is the cool type. My pinko friend Elena wanted me to mention this.

Catchy song auf Deutsch, anyone?

One of the things I like to do to put what I know of German in context is to write comics in it. Quite fun to do, and this is the first time that doodling stick figures has actually HELPED my edumakashun. Sooner or later I will scan these gems, and maybe post a few.

I have also realised how close German and Yiddish are. You see, Yiddish is a mixture of Hebrew and German, you know, before that mix equaled bad things (Not saying all Germans are Nazis or anything). Unlike my knowledge of Yiddish, the German that Ich kenne so far is mostly conversational, when the conversation isn’t towards the vending machine that ate my dollar.

German is fun to learn, though. Especially because of all the AWESOME PEOPLE IN MY CLASS, and the AWESOME PEOPLE TEACHING MY CLASS.

Altın saçlı Niche; Lag'ın Dingosu...

Sonunda Niche’yi de animede, gayet güzel bir seslendirme ve görsellikle görebildik. Niche’yi animede görebilmeyi en çok isteyen bendim sanırım. Onun tren istasyonunun duvarındaki oyukta (!) Lag tarafından bulunmasını ve oldukça duygusal bir arka plan, hatıralar ve sözler eşliğinde hedefine giden yoldan ufakta olsa bir sapma yaparak teslim edilmek üzere götürülmesini büyük bir zevkle izledim animede.

Niche’nin Lag’ı ilk gördüğünde bakışlarında ki o değişim, Lag’ın onunla olan ilk sevgi dolu dialogları ve Niche’nin Lag’ın kendisine verdiği donu ve Niche ismini kabul ediş şekli…

Lag bir tane Dingo ararken iki tane birden bulacak gibi. Biftek (Steak)’de sonraki bölümde Niche’nin kafasındaki yerini alacak…

Sonraki bölümün özetinde bölümün adı “Lag’ın Dingosu” yazarken Niche’nin götürülüşünü göstermeside oldukça güzeldi.

Bölüm isimleri animede mangadaki ile bire bir işleniyor. Genellikle bir manga bölümünü iki anime bölümünde, hiç eksiksiz ve gereksiz sahnelerle doldurmadan yayınlıyorlar. Bu bölümün ismi olan “Gözüyaşlı Çocuk ve Mektup Kız”, sonraki bölümün ismi olan “Lag’ın Dingosu”… Hepsi aynen manga sayılarından alıntı…

Mangada okurken hissettiğim tüm duyguları animede de hissediyorum. Manga ile bire bir, çok güzel bir anlatımla, müthiş bir görsellikle ilerliyor hikâye.

Tegami Bachi dünyasının, Akatsuki, Yuusari ve Yodaka’yı kapsayan ilginç dünya Ambergraund’un tasarımına anime girişinde kısaca değinildi. Şimdilik tek korkum mangadaki detaylı temayı animeye nasıl oturtacakları, animeyide mangadaki haritalarla süsleyip süslemeyecekleri ve Dr. Thunderland’ın en azından anime sonlarında da olsa çıkıp dünya hakkında bilgiler verip vermeyeceği… Mangada bile oldukça işlevli ve gerekli bilgilerken bunlar animede nasıl verilecekler merak ediyorum doğrusu… En azından haritaları bölümlerde görebilmeyi umuyorum.

Connor Culh’u da bu bölümde gördük. Tegami Bachi’de çok önemli yeri olan karakterlerden birisi de Connor… Hakkında fazla şey söylemeye niyetli değilim bu yazımda; ileride kendisi üzerine özel bir yazı hazırlayabilirim. Yine de bölümde Lag, Gauche’den bahsederken Connor’ın surat ifadesine ve Connor’ın Lag’a sorduğu derin sorulara dikkat edin. Karakter şimdi daha fazla ilginizi çekecektir.

Kısacası Tegami Bachi 3. bölümü oldukça güzeldi. Niche’nin ilk defa don giymesi ve dingo’lar hakkında bilgi, Lag’ı büyümüş halde ilk defa görüşümüz ve yolculuğun Kyrie’ye doğru olan ilk etabında yolu uzatan böyle bir etken sonucu olayların nasıl gelişeceği…

Tegami Bachi hakkında daha çok bahsedeceğimi biliyorsunuz, hem animesi hem de mangasını takip edenler benden ayrılmayınız…

Brian Kelley:I am joined today with the current LWA Champion KC Karrington. In less than a year KC has transformed himself from one half of the top tag team in St Louis, The Ego Express with his tag team partner Steven Kennedy to reigning LWA Champion.
KC thank you for joining us today.

KC Karrington Any time, thanks for having me.

1) How did you get into the sport?

KC Karrington: I’ve got to admit, I got into the business through sheer dumb luck. More or less, being in the right place at the right time. I was attending a Gateway Championship Wrestling show, merely as a fan. During intermission, I got to talking to the woman sitting next to me, and she started telling me that her son was a year younger than I was, sixteen at the time, and that he was training at a new promotion called Mid America Xtreme in Alton, IL. I was living in Edwardsville at the time, which is about thirty minutes from Alton. My main issues that kept me from really pursuing training were my age and the fact that to train with Gateway I would have to drive to Missouri every week. Not having a job and being in school five days of the week, it really wasn’t an option. So, even though my main goal was to get to GCW, I decided that getting trained at MAX would have to do for the time being. She talked to me for a while, introduced me to the trainer, and I started attending regularly. I would say that I learned the bare basics at MAX. I wrestled under a different name, copied my idol, Ric Flair, verbatim, and really stunk up the place. On a brighter note, MAX was where I first teamed with Steven Kennedy, and we really became good friends. Long story short, the company folded, and after a lot of prodding and nudging, Kennedy got me to come to the GCW school. I basically had to be re-programmed, because I was put in the ring WAY too early at MAX. I may have learned my basics from the MAX trainer, but Dingo taught me how to be a professional wrestler.

2) In a very young age you have been able top make an impact, what have been the keys to your success?

KC Karrington: I credit the success I do have to the people that have trained me, and have helped me become confident in my wrestling. I honestly owe everything I’ve done professionally to Dingo, SSK, Sadie Blaze, Evil Jim, Shorty Biggs. They have all helped me, encouraged me, and told me when something flat out sucked. I respect everyone of them more than they’ll ever know. On a personal note, I have a younger brother and sister who are everything to me. The feeling I get when they come to the shows and I see them sitting in the crowd cheering me on……that’s what it’s all about. They are my biggest fans, and they are what keep me going.

3) Lets start out with your time with tag team partner and good friend Steven Kennedy, collectively the two of you are the Ego Express. I have to say that you are one of the most exciting and entertaining tag teams that I have seen in the MWR coverage area. How did that tag team come to be?

KC Karrington: “He’s making a peak hour call!!!”……..Sorry, kind of an inside joke. It all started at MAX. As I mentioned, I was nowhere near ready to be in the ring, and they more or less told me to go to the ring and be Ric Flair. I didn’t know how to be me when I was in the ring. Then, I was put into a faction with SSK and the rest is history. Through working with him, I really got comfortable in front of a crowd, and we just really went out and did what we wanted to do. The best part was, it was fun and it got over. After MAX went under, I really had no interest in wrestling anywhere else, because I knew that I didn’t know what I was doing. God, it seemed like at least once a week SSK would call me and say, “So, are you gonna come train at Gateway or what?”. I put it off for a while, but, as anybody that knows him can attest to, Kennedy can be very persuasive. When they really felt I was properly trained, I made my GCW debut and SSK and I tagged with each other regularly. We won the GCW Tag Team Championships together twice, and that is one of my top achievements. We were the bad guys at the time, and we just went to the ring and did as much as we possibly could to piss everybody off. The crowd hated us….but they loved to hate us. That’s why it was so easy for us to be more fan friendly. Something that The Ego Express has in it’s favor that not a lot of tag teams in the area have, is that we interact with each other the exact same way inside the ring as we do outside the ring. We play off of each other and make each other crack up constantly. Not many tag teams on the indy scene that I know of go get “wingy” and then catch a movie. I think of the guy like the big brother I never had, and I really do look up to him.

4) The Ego Express have went up with some of the top tag teams in the Midwest, if MWR were to put out a BEST OF THE EGO EXPRESS. What would some of the match listing look like?

KC Karrington: Very first match on that list would be the TLC match we had in LWA with Dingo and Davey Vega for the LWA Tag Titles. Being out there with two men that I hold in the highest regard, and absolutely tearing the house down is something that I really enjoyed. Our soap opera saga that we went through with Vega and Johnny Vinyl would be right behind that. Our two matches in NWA : Dynamo Pro with The LONR’s (Mark Sterling & Darrien Sanders) as well. I learn more wrestling with Sterling than just about anybody else that I’ve ever stepped into the ring with. When we first started in Gateway, we had some really good matches with Sean Vincent and Rebecca Raze that I enjoyed very much. Of course, working with the North Star Express was a feather in our collective cap. Those two have been all over, and are one of the best teams in the country. I feel like we were able to hang well with them. Recently, we had a match with Mark Sterling and Jeremy Wyatt that I was very proud of. Like Sterling, I feel like I grow as a wrestler everytime I get to step into the ring with Wyatt. Of course, I can’t chew for a few days, but I enjoy it for some reason.

5) I have to admit that I am a big fan of good tag team wrestling. I would love to see the Ego Express travel to 3XW to take on the tag team The Gentleman’s Club of Mark Sterling and Gage Octane or go head to head Barrio Boys Domino Rivera and Angel Medina in Kansas. Is there any tag team that you would like to test your skills against?

KC Karrington: The Bario Boys are definitely on that list. I’ve only gotten to see them a few times, but I’ve got to say that I was impressed. The Hooligans are another tag team that I have seen a few times, and I’d like to see how Kennedy and I would do against them. Plus, they seem to enjoy beating the snot out of the Submission Squad, which I am always a fan of.

6) When one talks about the history of the Ego Express and KC Karrington we can not have a conversation without talking about your former manager, as conniving as she is beautiful Tiffany LeFane. In one of the most shocking moments that I can recall she turned on you at the 2008 Circus Maximus, by throwing a fireball and taking the side of the Submission Squad. I feel that she is one of the top managers in the Midwest but one could argue that you have found more success without her in your corner. Would you say it would be fair to say that you were able to use her turn on you as motivation?

KC Karrington: Her turning on me is something that made me step up my game. After eveything that she and Vega did to me at Circus Maximus, (the blood, the fire, the betrayal), I feel like I had to evolve. But at the same time, I feel like the fans began to take me a lot more seriously. They recognized that I wasn’t the young kid that I started out as. I had grown, and I had been through a damn war and made it out alive. As far as Tiffany goes…….let’s face it, there is not a person that she has managed that hasn’t been successful. Let’s look at the list here. Ego Express : Multi-time GCW Tag Champs, LWA Tag Champs, SSK is the Medallion of Whatchimacallit (I can never remember) holder, and I currently hold the LWA Championship. Davey Vega : Medallion of Bandanas holder, somebody whom I have NEVER beaten in an LWA ring, and soon faces Dingo for the NWA Missouri State Championship. Gary the Nightowl has a shot at my LWA Championship soon. Tiffany knows what she is doing out there. As much as she has put me through, I believe she IS the top manager in the mid-west.

7) Lets turn our focus to singles action. Looking back, Jeremy Wyatt had been the Kingpin and the 2008 MWR Wrestler of the year throughout the Midwest by beating top notch talent in Tyler Black, “The Future” Donovan Ruddick, Abu Colussus, Davey Richards and Jordan Lacey. How were you able to overcome the intensity of Wyatt where so many others have failed?

KC Karrington: You know, I’ve asked myself the same question. I don’t think that I would be holding the LWA Championship without the fans on my side. The night I won the title, the thing I remember most was the reaction that the fans gave me when I stepped through the curtain. That still gives me goosebumps. When Wyatt gave me repeated forearms to the jaw, chops to the chest, and those stiff kicks he can throw, hearing the fans rallying behind me gave me that will to fight on. I would love to say that I won that belt because I am better than Wyatt, but I’m not going to say that. Jeremy Wyatt may not be a fan favorite to put it lightly, but he is probably the best in the mid-west. I respect him more than almost anybody else in the locker room.

On June 20th, 2009 you shocked wrestling fans by becoming the man to end Wyatt’ title reign. Your good friend Steven Kennedy came into the ring to congratulate you while the LWA locker room came ringside for a standing ovation. Explain to the fans in words what that moment was like.

KC Karrington: Accomplished. I felt like I had really proved all the doubters wrong. All the people when I first started telling me that I could never be anything because of my size…..I had always let that sit in the back of my head. I’ve been trying to prove them wrong for the last five years. Hearing the LWA fans in O’Fallon, seeing my family in the crowd, and having Kennedy, Shorty Biggs, Adam Rich, people I think of like brothers, in the ring with me to share that moment. I don’t think that that moment could have been any better.

9) One competitor who has quietly making waves is your former partner Kennedy. He is the current LWA Medallion of Brutality holder by defeating Gary J who was accompanied by Tiffany Lefane the same night that you won the LWA Title and has been impressive in the past few months including a big match Jeremy Wyatt, Brandon Espinosa & Dash Rando in a four-way no-DQ match. It may not be soon but how would you feel if Kennedy was granted a shot?

KC Karrington: You know, that’s something that’s crossed my mind quite a bit. Kennedy and I joke all the time about who is the Shawn Michaels of our tag team and who is the Marty Jannetty. Luckily, we’ve never been inside of a barber shop. Seriously, though, I would give SSK a title shot any time and any where. He is ridiculously talented, and he and I think so much alike, it would probably be as close as I could get to wrestling myself.

10) Who do you feel in the coming months present your biggest challenge for the LWA title going forward?

KC Karrington: As far as people who have yet to make that big splash, Davey Vega is somebody that everybody in the mid-west should keep their eyes on. I have known him since he first started, and he is an all around great wrestler. Personality, psychology, general ring presence….he has it all. We’ve wrestled more times than I can remember. He and I have been in some wars, and have tried to literally destroy each other. Hell, he tried to set me on fire! Personal feelings aside though, getting in the ring with him always brings out the best in me, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him come after my LWA Title in the near future. Mike Sydal is somebody that has come a long way in a short time. I’ve gotten to step into the ring with him in tag and singles matches, and he’s beyond talented. Brandon Aarons is another guy I’m very impressed with, and another guy that I have known since he first started training. Another person that takes pride in what he does, and I think he can make some major waves soon. Of course, the guys that have been in the game for a while are a threat and ready to strike. Kennedy, Dingo, Sterling. Any one of them coming after the championship would not surprise me. Unfortunately for me, they’re some of the best at what they do. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t looking forward to it.

That's So JOLLY!

So, my sister read in a blog somewhere (she doesn’t remember which one), that suggested instead of calling something “gay” when it is stupid, calling it “jolly”. She began saying this after accidently calling something “gay” in that context to her gay hairdresser, and we have used it ever since. The reasons I bring this up are;

1) Today is National Coming Out Day

2) I splatter-painted a car rainbow on Friday and it was FUN!

It was with the owner's permission, of course. We were going to drive it in a parade, but it rained on our parade and it was cancelled.

I am (for all I know), a straight woman who just wears flannel shirts and rainbow alot. I understand that it can seem like I’m gay, but I really don’t mind. I’m not insulted by it, and I think the reason that guys aren’t lining up at my doorstep has less to do with them thinking I’m a lesbian but more the fact that I’m a bit of a whackjob. Still, I am very much for LGBTQ rights, because not only do I think everybody should be treated equally, but with the amount of times I may have been discriminated against because it seems like I’m gay it almost feels like I’m fighting for my own rights. Maybe you could say that I’m like a metrosexual, but a chick version?

What really makes me want to beat conservative, Christian, anti-homo types with a rainbow flag is that supposedly Jesus loved EVERYBODY! This includes gay people! Maybe he really looovvveeed everybody. Hehe, that may give those jerks with the “god hates fags” signs heart attacks. You know, someone who was a genuine “patriotic American” and “Christian” would probably be extremely accepting of everyone and so far to the left of the aisle that they would not even be in the building, but in fact standing outside with a sign, a megaphone, a dream, and according to the suspicions of some Secret Service guys, a pipe bomb. Why? America was founded by change and revolution, and Karl Marx even appreciated Jefferson’s writings. Also, Jesus was a cool, radical dude who helped and loved everybody. I personally am not religious in any way, but I think if Jesus or any other majour deity was real they would be cool with gays and everybody else. So, Americans who flip or burn the flag because they want something better are the most patriotic of all of us, while those who put it on their car and think that there is no progress to be made are the truly anti-American ones. People who don’t believe others shouldn’t be helped aren’t Christians.

Now, I don’t care who you are, say it with me;

What a dingo is

Now, what I am about to mention is something now widely considered in the discussion about dogs and wolves.

The common assertion is that dogs are not wolves because when dogs go feral, they don’t become the large, big game hunting wolves that we all know from nature documentaries and zoos. I’ve always found this argument to be rather faulty for reasons I shall explain.

I submit that the reason why dogs don’t become wolves is because it is far easier to scavenge off of people than return to their ancestral lupine form in terms of phenotype and behavior.

We do, however, have an example of a domesticated dog reverting back to a wolf form. However, the form it returned to is more of one of the subtropical races of wolf, rather than moose and elk-hunting wolves from the northern reaches of the Northern Hemisphere. No dog has ever returned to that particular form, simply because in all cultures in the northern part of Northern Hemisphere there are both garbage dumps and a cultural tradition of dog keeping (and I use that term very loosely). Both of these features make it easier for dogs to remain dogs.

The dog I am talking about is the dingo. The dingo is sometimes considered its own subspecies of wolf (Canis lupus dingo). However, it actually descends from East Asian pariah dogs that came to Australia 3,500 to 4,000 years ago.

4,000 years ago, pariah dogs in Southern Asia looked a lot like pariah dogs do now. They probably had floppy ears and curled tails. They were like the pariah dogs we find throughout the Third World. They are the pot lickers and primitive sanitation engineers of these societies. A few are used as hunters, especially in New Guinea, and a few are used as livestock guardian dogs (like the ones in the Ethiopian wolf video I posted yesterday).

The pariah dogs arrived in Australia through trade from Indonesia.

The native peoples of Australia did keep the dingoes as pets, but every account I’ve read of them, the dingoes were not fed. They had to go hunting on their own. Not all bands of Australian natives were interested in them, and as the dogs spread through the continent, they became more and more wolf-like.

In fact, I’ll submit that a dingo is a domestic dog that became a wolf.

They do form packs and hunt on their own. They pair bond, and the males help their mates care for their young. Most feral domestic dogs don’t do these things. However, there have been cases of some pariah dog males helping bitches rear their litters.

For generations, Indonesian dogs arrived in Australia, where they were absorbed into the dingo population.

I find it very interesting that the original theory about the dingoes derived from the Indian wolf (Canis lupus pallipes). However, we know that Indian wolves are rather unique genetically, and they probably had no role in the development of the domestic dog.

It is also a bit bigger than the typical dingo, weighing as much as 70 pounds. Most dingoes are around the 30 to 40 pound range. (The given weights on US dog sites insanely over-estimate the dingo’s size).

However, there is a wolf subspecies that does aproach this size and conformation, and what’s more is that it evolved for a similar arid environment.

This subspecies is, of course, the Arabian wolf (Canis lupus arabs). It stands about three inches taller at the shoulder than the tallest dingoes, but in terms of head and body size, it is very similar to the dingo of Australia.

It is because of the similarities between dingoes and Arabian wolves that I think we can make that the case that this is a good example of a pariah dog evolving back to a wolfish form.

It punches a large hole in the argument that feral dogs never become like wolves. They become like wolves when they are forced to hunt for a living.

I have never understood why we assume that all wolves are like the ones from Northern Eurasia and Northern North America. Those may be the most numerous wolves, and they may have played a role in the development of the domestic dog through the ages.

But not all wolves are of this type. The subspecies that are subtropical in origin, like the red wolf, the Indian wolf, and the Arabian wolf are all smaller animals, with slighter bodies and smaller heads. (The red wolf may be a separate species, but no one has convinced me yet.)

The only way to test my hypothesis is to get rid of humans. If humans were to disappear from the Northern Hemisphere, I think we could see the gradual evolution of domestic dogs toward a big game hunting wolf phenotype and behavior. Just like the Asian pariah dogs in Australia had to become wolves to survive in the bush, domestic dogs would have to become wolves to live without us.

The old saying is that “Dogs make us human.”

Well, the corollary is that humans keep dogs in their dog-like form. Without our waste or our dog-keeping cultures, dogs have no reason to remain as dogs. Without us, the niche that dogs fill no longer exists, and the organism is better off becoming a wolf.

And the dingo is a dog that became wolf for precisely that reason. Hunter-gatherers may have liked them, but they didn’t have the conditions that allowed them to live as dogs. Those dogs had to hunt for a living.

And that’s why I still consider the dog to be subspecies of Canis lupus, which is in keeping with the tradition of classifying domestic animals with their wild forebears.
