False advertising from Dion Wired?

As I’m going to an air show on Saturday I ordered a larger memory card for my camera from an online retailer last week. It should have been delivered today but instead I received a phone call apologising for a supplier delay. As I will only receive the card next week I started looking around at local stores to buy a card before the show.

There’s a new Dion Wired store in Somerset Mall so I took a look at their web site and spotted a 4GB SanDisk Ultra II card for R399 and decided that’s what I would buy.

Knowing they close at 6pm I left work at five and stopped off at the mall. I was disappointed at first as there were only SanDisk Extreme III and Extreme IV cards on display; I wasn’t going to buy those as their extra speed is wasted in my camera and they are much more expensive. Luckily it turned out that there were some of the Ultra II cards under the counter. However they were marked at R419.95 and not the R399 I had been expecting. When I mentioned this to the person assisting me he said he would check, which involved him taking the card to a cashier and having her scan the barcode. When the scan confirmed the R419.95 price he simply said “That’s the price”. I thought that he might offer to give me the card at the price reflected on the web site, but no such offer was made. Even when I declined to buy the card at the inflated price he simply shrugged, as if to say “We don’t need your business anyway.”

I understand that mistakes can be made and web sites may get out of debt but in cases such as this I would at the very least expect to be offered the product at the lower, advertised price. Their failure to make such an offer smacks of false advertising, intended simply to get you into the store where you may be willing to capitulate and pay the higher price. I am not prepared to do so and would rather take my business to a smaller store where I may have to pay that little more but where I can expect good service and will know that I am not being cheated. I will certainly think twice before considering Dion Wired as a potential shopping venue in the future.

The news just in that Celine Dion is no longer pregnant. The singer suffered from a miscarriage. InTouch Weekly explains: “In unfortunate news for Celine Dion and her husband Rene Angelil, the singer is no longer pregnant, a source close to the family tells In Touch. “While she and Rene are actively trying for a baby, she is not currently expecting,” the friend says. In August, a rep for the “My Heart Will Go On” star confirmed her pregnancy, while reports surfaced that she used fertility treatments to expand her family. Celine and Rene have an 8-year-old son, Rene-Charles.”

This weekend I also went to Bellahouston Park on the south side of Glasgow. Its home to many a wonderful things, but first and foremost House for an Art Lover, which is the modern day creation of one of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s designs that was not realized in Charlie Mac’s day. HAL completed the project in the mid nineties, and the result is a stunning multi purpose building, but more over, a foundation dedicated to mounting ambitious art projects throughout the park. My favorite was the glass house installation designed by Gross Max architects as part of HAL’s Speculative Architecture competition. Its based on the premis of a fictious plant collector who is interested in exotic plant life – ferns (apparently one of the most ancient) and carnivorous plants (just plane strange). But mostly I think I’m just attracted to shiney things – large amounts of glass encasing warm plant life – another interest of mine. The one weird thing about the glass house though is how its situated. Right across from it is this large hill in the park which is home to dry ski slopes. Yes that’s dry ski slopes – no snow, just some sort of weird material that allows you to “ski” down the mountain so to say. Parts of Bellahouston feel like a theme park – a pervasive feeling that does not escape the atmosphere around the artworks. In this particular case though, you can catch one perspective where the glass house fights back. See here how the snowless, fearless skiers soar to their death into the carnivorous pitcher plants of the glass house.

But glass house felt familiar too – it reminded me of the artwork Mark Dion did in the Seattle Art Museum – “Neukon Vivarium”. Dion removed a fallen hemlock tree from a watershed area in the Seattle region, and literally preserved the ecosystem that had begun to develop in and on it by building a huge glass house / green house around it.There’s interesting interview on the project here.

There seems to be such a trend these days for artists working with plants, plant life, ecosystems, hot houses, organics etc. I guess both the global food crisis and climate change make the issues absolutely imperative and at the forefront of all of our minds. We need more artists to address issues of sustainable practices concerning food and the environment in their work. Also of interest are some folks right here in Glasgow Justin Carter, and Olga Schulz . I could list projects for hours, but don’t want to go overboard here. Any other local artists or just interesting projects you can share?

If you’re into Hip Hop then a listen of the En’Rico Dion aka ESQ single is definitely worthy. ESQ has been working hard on his music, from live performances, to studio recordings and it’s time for him to be heard. ‘Get Fly’ is more of a club track (DJ’s get a hold of it!) revolving around a strip club theme. Bam Bam is on the hook giving it a catchy style and ESQ’s lyrics hit hard… no pun intended (lol). There is also a clean version of this for the sensitive ears out there! ‘Knock ‘em Out’ is my favorite of the two, I find it quite catchy and I like the punchlines within it. On datpiff there’s two extra bonus tracks: ‘Stop & Go’ has a different feel about it, I find it quite fresh, the beat is very different and overall the song is quite chilled out… to me. ‘Big Deal’ is a freestyle to the infamous beat… if you don’t know which one I’m talking about shame on you lol. Who knew that singing about a cheap, loose girl could be such fun? Dion did. Runaround Sue, this classic doo wop song, was written by Dion DiMucci and Ernie Maresca in 1961. Runaround Sue is the tale of a girl that, well, as Dion sings it:

“Here’s my story, its sad but true
It’s about a girl that I once knew
She took my love, then ran around
With every single guy in town.”

(then enters my favorite part: “hey! hey! wo-ah-oh-oh-oh!”)

Contrary to popular belief, Dion did not record this song with the Belmonts. After joining the Belmonts in 1957 (and jointly becoming Dion and the Belmonts), he left the group in 1960 to start his solo career, which was clearly successful, as Runaround Sue became a #1 hit.

Even today, 48 years later, Runaround Sue is a song still as much fun as it was when Dion first sang it. Hey! hey! wo-ah-oh-oh-oh!

Para variarle un poco a las Crónicas, esta semana he decidido, después de unos cates y otros tantos empujones, hacer el segundo podcast de Las Crónicas Vicino. Este, como bien lo dice el nombre, habla sobre cine, pero que mejor aspecto del cine para un podcast, que las mismas ondas sonoras musicales que acompañan a toda película. Es por eso que el tema que uso como escusa en esta ocasión, es la música del cine, mejor conocida como banda sonora, score o sountrack. Cabe destacar que este post, está hecho una vez más en colaboración con Liana Ylonen, a quien agradezco por su (casi) infinita paciencia!

Tan ta ra ran, Tan ta ra ran... uno de los temas más conocidos del cine!

¿Qué es un soundtrack?

Para acabar de entender que es, y porqué se llama así, tenemos que irnos a un punto básico del proceso de creación de cine; al filmar una película, la cinta que captura la imagen, solo captura eso, por ende, no tiene sonido.

Generalmente el sonido se captura aparte en otro tipo de cinta y en el proceso de post-producción, estos son unidos para dar la ilusión de que el sonido proviene de la cinta que vemos (además de un intrincado proceso de re-creación del sonido de la película casi en su totalidad, de este tema, pueden saber MUCHO más en este programa de Floppy Radio!). Del mismo modo, la música, es integrada mucho después en el proceso de postproducción de la película. Teniendo su propia pista, además de la de sonido, y la de video. Por ende, siendo el “track” que contiene el “sonido”. Al ser mucho más que simple sonido, algunos prefieren nombrarlo “Score” o también conocido en lenguas de habla hispana como “Banda Sonora”.

Así es, esto es pura imagen, nada de audio.

¿A quién le interesa eso?

Sobra decir que en poco tiempo, Hollywood encontró la forma de sacar provecho a estas composiciones, creando un mercado pequeño, pero en algunas ocasiones millonario, donde se vende por separado, la pura música de la película. Razón gracias a la cual, de pronto los soundtracks de películas diversas, se han visto poblados (y en ocasiones sobre-poblados) por autores de “moda” y cantantes de “nombre” para ayudar tanto a las ventas de la película, como del disco. Ejemplo que queda claramente ilustrado cuando la mercadotecnia y las modas se juntan y crean soundtracks como el de “Titanic”, que en 1997 vendiera más de 30 millones de copias a nivel mundial gracias a una sobre-exposición mediática. Algunos de los soundtracks más cercanos en esta categoría son el de “The Bodyguard” con más de 16 millones de copias vendidas en 1992, gracias a la ahora decadente Whitney Houston (que pasa con las canciones melosas y las películas aún peores?!), seguidos de cerca por el sountrack de “Purple Rain” con ni más ni menos que Prince encabezando el disco en 1984.

3 héroes, 3 épocas, 3 películas... demasiada cursileria...

Esto hace que surja la pregunta inevitable que más de una vez me hizo comprar un “soundtrack” que no quería:

¿Cómo se si estoy comprando o consiguiendo la música de la película, o un montón de rolas insípidas que no tienen nada que ver con lo que yo escuché en el cine?

Esto puede ser engañoso y una vez más, producto de la mercadotecnia que como siempre, tiende a arruinar más de una situación cuando se mete donde no le corresponde.

Por ende, he aquí la lista oficial de tipos de soundtracks que existen y que pueden ser el próximo que compres:

1. Soundtracks Musicales

Generalmente enfocados a películas de género musical, conteniendo todas la composiciones cantadas durante la película como es el caso de “Little Shop of Horrors” ó “Grease”.

Cursi + Cine = Ventas

2. Soundtracks conocidos como “Original Score”.

Estos son los que contienen únicamente la música de “fondo” o composición original utilizada durante toda la película (y el enfoque principal de esta Crónica). Algunos ejemplos son los soundtracks de “Star Wars” ó “The Godfather”.

3. Soundtracks conocidos como “Albums” inspirados o basados en la película.

Estos son los que quieres evitar si las “modas” no son lo tuyo. Generalmente contienen música de las “estrellas pop” del momento que para aprovechar el tren, ponen su rola más “conocida” en el Álbum, para hacerse promoción y apoyar a la película dándole “renombre”, casos de esto abundan y por desgracia el primero que me viene a la mente es “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – The Album” con éxitos como los de “Linkin Park”… *suspiro*…

Medida de supervivencia

Por lo tanto, la próxima vez que compres (o bajes) un soundtrack, primero, asegúrate de SABER que tipo de soundtrack quieres, ya que muchas veces, se lanzan tanto los “Scores” como los “Álbums” de una misma película, y puedes llevarte una decepcionate sorpresa si buscabas el contrario. ¿La forma más fácil de identificarlo? – Checa el tracklist que viene en la parte trasera del disco, si en este abundan nombres “conocidos” de “estrellas”, ten por seguro que estás viendo el Álbum, en cambio, si ves títulos de situaciones sin nombres de autores conocidos, seguramente estarás viendo los nombres de las diferentes composiciones utilizadas en la película.

Uno dice ALBUM y tiene un montón de artistas "conocidos", el otro, solo dice SCORE

Aunque ese dato puede salvarte de una mala compra (o descarga), no en todos los casos existen los dos tipos de soundtrack, y de hecho, en muchas ocasiones, solo salen o los álbumes, o los scores, o ninguno de los dos, así que la próxima vez que quieras hacerte de un soundtrack, primero decide que quieres, luego asegúrate de que lo que obtengas, sea justo eso! Y para cerrar con broche de oro, te recomiendo el podcast que viene justo a continuación!

Banda oriunda de la capital de EE.UU, Washington, que luego de nutrirse de la movida Grunge de la mano de Nirvana y pasearse por el circuito independiente de Seattle entre el 90 y el 93 lanzan su disco Homonimo con el cual venden 4 millones de copias y se hacen conocidos en todo el mundo con sus hits “”Change”, “You”, “Far Behind”. Where has the time gone? It seems like in one blink of an eye the summer months have passed and we are rushing into the holiday months. I suppose its my own fault having worked on Halloween T-shirts all of last month, and now I’m in the midst of setting up my Christmas store which will be ready to go, somewhere around October 20. (So stop by and check back in).

While I was working on a New Years Eve shirt I had an odd feeling when I put down the type face announcing the forthcoming year of “2010.” It most certainly didn’t feel right. Had we already been through a decade in this new millennium? It just seem like yesterday when we marveled the turning of a century and laughed that we were no where near as technologically advanced as Hollywood and science-fiction of yesteryear had predicted we would be. And though, in the last ten years, we have made strides in personal electronics with HDTVs and IPODs and are producing more fuel efficient cars, does it still feel like we have reached the dawn of tomorrow as predicted by utopians like Walt Disney? In deed, Walt Disney was so committed to his dream of the future (controlled climate, robot servants, etc…) it became the source for several rides in his theme parks in Orlando.

2010: According to MGM and Arthur C. Clark we'd be traveling the cosmos on flying naval frigates.

We have not even traveled beyond the moon, instead we are talking about revisiting the moon, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 1970’s. (In comparison to the age of exploration, the space age is sadly lagging.) However, to be fair, as of this morning NASA has bombed the moon to see if its possible to get “Water from the Moon“(an ideal I believe made mildly-popular in the 1990’s by Celine Dion). Though I shake my head at the absurdity or the smallness of our modern advances in science I’m not surprised, really, as there has always seem to be a spacious divide between humanism’s bold predictions and the more subtle reality that always replaces such idealism.

Its just laughable at what was predicted and what we got instead. By 2015, the movie Back to the Future 2, predicted flying cars would be the norm and that a device called “Mr. Fusion” would take any garbage and turn it into rocket fuel; instead we’re getting government mandated green cars, that may be fuel efficient but, in terms of sex appeal or style, caters to the somewhat effeminate or metrosexual crowds. But hey who am I to scold anyone on machismo as I just referenced a Celine Dion song in my blog. I just want my future car to be more like a space ship and a little less like a motorized carriage. Heck I’d just settle for a giant IPOD on wheels at this point. Oh well.

Now I’m not trying to sound like the killjoy or being one who takes for granted all the advancements that technology like the internet has brought us (online shopping, video phones, music and media downloads). I’m simply pointing out the humor in the wide chasm between the reality of 2010 and the fantasy we’ve created about life beyond the year 2000. After forty five years since the Jetson’s debuted on television, it is still a dream that one day our lives will be like George Jetson’s; complaining about the 15 hour/three day work week, while flying back home to his apartment above the clouds. More than likely those ideas will always be fantasies. I mean 3 day work week? I’ll believe it when I’ve achieved it.

Well, on that note, enjoy your life and have a good future…regardless of flying cars.

This is a great list of songs that debuted on the Hot 100 during the month of October. There are some interesting songs on this list of number one songs. The shortest #1 in history is here; Stay by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs. It is only 1:39 long. Notice the Supremes had a number one from October for every year from 1964 to 1969, except for 1967. They did have 2 number ones in 1967, but both came out early that year.

For me, I did not have a favorite from this list. Mr. Lonely by Bobby Vinton is as close as I could come to picking just one but there were about 5 that were close. I am an oldie fan but I would not have been able to tell you that a group named Steam sang Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye. But it was 1969 and, for me, that was not a good year in music.

Coderre Bringing Iggy Trouble

The resignation of Denis Coderre from major posts within the Liberal Party today wasn’t really a surprise considering the drama going on between him and Ignatieff. On the other hand, when combined with news reports and the Liberals also hinting earlier today at another potential election call, this makes one wonder if Mike is trying to see how much lower in the polls his party can go. It will be a bit of a rude awakening for the Liberals if he turns out to be better than Dion at trying to guarantee a Conservative majority.

Dion & Ben from Ajaxian going to Palm

The two founders of Ajaxian, Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer (used to work at Mozilla Labs) finally were hired by Palm. At Dion’s blog we learn that with their new role as Director’s of the Palm Developer Relations team they will have the responsibility of the developer experience with Palm, and will be trying to create a rich connective tissue between the company and the Web developer community…
Dion just linked a previous article about his feel on Apple’s AppStore validation policy. However Ben was very harsh on his blog statements, (subtely ?) targeted towards Apple :

my enthusiasm for this amazing new world is tempered by some unfortunate decisions made by some of the players in this space. It seems that some view this revolution as a chance to seize power in downright Orwellian ways by constraining what we as developers can say, dictating what kinds of apps we can create, controlling how we distribute our apps, and placing all kinds of limits on what can do to our computing devices.

We all know that Palm Pre’s director, John Rubinstein, worked as Hardware Director at Apple before he left when the transition to Intel was announced (on a technical view – that is non commercial – I agree that the G5 from 2003 is still superior to latest Intel chips architecure wise – in these 6 years only manufacturing process did improved – soon 20nm), however all this doesn’t look completely FairPlay Moreover this is bad, as the iPhone still uses non Intel processors (Samsung ARMs), and Apple buyed later PA Semi’s PPC derived processors company, that is likely to see the light in an upcoming Apple’s tablet mac.

We could find some interesting reactions to Ben’s post (I agree that Palm will have to change its mind when it will have to manage validating of thousands of applications – it is easier for them for now) :

What a bunch of bs. Will palm have no approval process for it’s apps? And where were you when iPhone had no SDK? Why didn’t you develop for iPhone safari then.
You are perfect socialistic idelogues. Apple innovates and you don’t like it. You would be more happier if moto razr were the market leader.

Sanctimony anyone?
I should point out that Apple allows anyone to create powerful web apps with guaranteed distribution. And with HTML 5 and offline storage you can pretty much do anything.
Talk to me when you guys have a real SDK.

I also agree with this other comment :

This technology advancement empowers people, which is great but it also gives more opportunity for a company/s to control what data, what applications etc. the user can access – this is simply wrong and something as advocates of an open web, we should also be against in platforms.

However I’m far more worried for now by Google’s power (see articles about Google automatically scanning all books without having requested the authors/editors agreement, and trying later to provide money in order to not being pursued). And if you don’t agree, nobody will ever have a chance to read you, as your article could likely be unreferenced in their search engine. Hopefully Microsoft is coming back, better ?

Congrats to both finally, and we can hope that their new job will help also for other communities. Moreover, as Palm is also using WebKit, all that is good.

Kathy Dion Obit/death notice link

For Kathy’s family I am passing on the link to her death notice/obit in the Chicago Tribune. Her lifelong friend Bill Paige wrote it and he is struggling with her passing, but taking one day at a time. He did a fine job on it and we all thank you Bill.
