“Twenty thousand people enjoyed the music of Dave Brubeck, Cannonball Adderly, Herbie Mann, Dizzy Gillespie and Gerry Mulligan. On the night of July 3, 1971, as Dionne Warwick sang ”What the World Needs Now is Love, Sweet Love,” a mob of young gate crashers broke through a fence and stormed the stage.”

“They also drove the Newport Jazz Festival out of town: George Wein, the festival’s impresario, took his event, which had clearly outgrown the seaport, to New York City.”

above text courtesy of The New York Times

I was there that evening, on Miantomoni Hill, and watched in dismay as a spirit of uncontrollable drunkenness and anxiety overwhelmed a large group of students, 20 or so, who thought it their absolute duty to crash the fence for a closer look, despite having not paid for the privilege.

Dionne was singing, a virtuoso performance, an ironic choice of song, and the Allman Brothers Band were due up next, who couldn’t have been hotter, following the release of the 2 LP set of Live At The Fillmore East. The feeling of anticipation was palpable, thick like molasses, and sharp as Vermont cheddar.

As the fence started to go, and drunks crossed over onto Festival Field, we peaceniks yelled at the hooligans to be cool (chill out) but a momentum began that sucked in at least a hundred or so, at which point numerous scuffles began to break out, congeal, and move, like a tidal wave, toward the stage. There was smoke and gas, and we were awoke from a hazy stupor around 7 AM the following morning by police in riot gear, suggesting, through bullhorns, that we collect our things, quickly, and vacate the area. Half hour later, our thumbs were pointed towards Hampton Beach.

I was content to sit, and camp on the hillside that evening, 38+ years ago, having hitch hiked from CT that summer day with a couple of high school friends, and all of us, from all over the world, woven together on that hillside, were tolerated nicely by parks management, until the fracas. Quite far from stage left, we could still hear beautifully, thanks to the PA system graciously provided by our hosts, and the natural acoustics of the lawn & hillside.

Having arrived in the mid afternoon a few hours earlier, we setup a few lean-tos and tents and a well tended campfire, over which we cooked wieners, & toasted marshmallows, & joints…drank’ wine, spo dee o dee, and awaited the arrival of the Allman Brothers Band, which sadly, would have been one of Duane’s final performances, before his untimely death a few months later. There was a feeling of community, before the unruly crowd appeared, as we set up sites that afternoon, and shared commodities with strangers. A festival that began in Newport R.I. the year I was born, and crashed in Newport 17 years later… the only time I attended. No, I don’t take it personally.

It rose from the ashes, however, and lives on today…back home where it belongs.

Has anyone from that original group of 20 or so ever thought about the far reaching consequences of their actions that night?

If so, we hope they also considered social recompense.

Having shared that experience with you, let’s now listen in on an earlier time at Newport, 1959, to some of the most stunning jazz performances of the century by Dakota Staton, Count Basie, Joe Williams, Lambert Hendricks & Ross & Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers with Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan

"What’s it all about, Alfie?"

" "Alfie" is a song written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David.

It was the theme from the 1966 film Alfie. It was performed in the film during the end credits by Cher in an arrangement by Sonny Bono.

In 1966, Cher released her version (also the original version of this song) as a single. Released on the Imperial label, this version became a top forty hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Also in 1966, Cilla Black released her version of "Alfie" as a single. It became a top ten hit on the UK Singles Chart, where it peaked at number nine. It was also a minor hit for her on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the Billboard adult contemporary chart, two further versions competed in 1966. While Carmen McRae took her version to number 29 on that chart, the version by Joanie Sommers enjoyed greater success, peaking at number nine.

In 1967, Dionne Warwick released her cover version as a single. This version outperformed both Black’s and Cher’s in the United States, going all the way to number 15 on the Hot 100 and number five on the Billboard R&B chart.

In 1968, Stevie Wonder released a harmonica instrumental version. This version also made the Hot 100, peaking at number 66. It was also a top twenty adult contemporary hit. Wonder released the single for Gordy Records under the pseudonym Eivets Rednow (Stevie Wonder).

Other artists to record versions of "Alfie" include several versions by Burt Bacharach himself, Vikki Carr, The Delfonics, Bill Evans, Percy Faith, Blossom Dearie, Maynard Ferguson, Stan Getz, Dick Hyman, Jack Jones, The Anita Kerr Singers, Johnny Mathis, Brad Mehldau, Matt Monro, Mina Mazzini, Olivia Newton-John, Elaine Paige, Buddy Rich, Joss Stone (for the 2004 remake of Alfie), Barbra Streisand, The Sweet Inspirations, McCoy Tyner, Patricia Barber, Midge Ure, Sarah Vaughan, Nancy Wilson and Vanessa L.
In a deleted scene from the movie Austin Powers in Goldmember, they parody the song, replacing Alfie with Austin. The song is sung by most of the main characters. Michael Caine, who plays Austin Powers father, also played "Alfie" in the original movie. Scenes from the 1966 film Alfie can be seen in the background while he is singing.

Oh Dionne Warwick… she had first access to Burt Bacharach songs… but… as great a v

Oh Dionne Warwick… she had first access to Burt Bacharach songs… but… as great a vocalist she is: Delicate, technically proficient, and soulful enough… there are certain times where she was outdone by someone else on her own songs… not only chartwise… but… well, on a gut level

1) Make It Easy On Yourself
Jerry Butler (1962)

Granted Dionne Warwick’s first cut version of this song was a piano/drum/guitar demo, in contrast to the epic Opera Soul masterpiece that Jerry Butler made it out to be with an Oscar worthy plea for honesty and angelic, crystalline background vocals over that shimmering arrangement. Her 1970 “live” top 40 hit version is nothing to really write home about either. Her original demo is, what will be a constant problem that I will highlight with each other song I present… is that it’s too “nice.” The irony of this being that in songs with similar subject matters she could tap into a aching vulnerability and provide layers to what on the surface was her cool aloofness (see why her original takes on “Anyone Who Had A Heart” and “Walk On By” work so effortlessly). Then again… had her version not sucked… we would have never gotten “Don’t Make Me Over”

2) “Wishin’ & Hopin”
Dusty Springfield (1964)

(Here with OMG Martha & The Vandellas!)

2nd case of “too nice.” While Dusty starts out as neat and dignified as Dionne, verse by verse she gets less “patient” about sharing her advice, either out of the fact that she “knows” how to really conquer a prize, versus Dionne Warwick sounding like she’s reciting advice from Ladies Home Journal over tea and cookies. The difference is really obvious by the time Dusty does what I can only equate to a James Brown “Take it To The Bridge” on the bridge, which is just a gleeful slap in the face of 1950s prudishness about waiting to have a guy make the move. This is the moment that Dusty Springfield became enshrined as a Gay Icon, giving her West End Drag Queen friends a little faith for a better tomorrow, and getting the guy, while… well… Dionne kept the advice to a few sorority sisters.

3)Message To Michael
The Marvelettes (1966)

I’ll admit that Dionne Warwick could tear this song up in a live performance, but something about the top 10 hit she had with it….
…. I really fault the backing track produced in France, which was also Dionne first production of herself, as the main fault. This is one of the few times that Motown did a cover song that worked superior to the original. The fuller backgrounds, the warmer bass and the extra grit of Gladys Horton’s plea, pours over smoother, and at the same time more mournful.

4) (There’s) Always Something There To Remind Me
Patti LaBelle & The BlueBelles (1966)

Dionne’s cover of the Lou Johnson/Sandi Shaw split hit is ok, soulful enough, but is produced in that stereotypical “Bacharach” way. I love the way Patti and the girls bend and twist this standard, in a lot of ways making it a follow up to their stop and go shimmering “All or Nothing” until it is a let your hair down workout…. which brings me to the ultimate smack down…

…5) I Say A Little Prayer
Aretha Franklin (1968)

Burt Bacharach himself said that Dionne’s original was too quick, tense and nervous (and plotted against it’s release for a year, finally being veto’d in 1967), But Aretha opens it up and lets the song breathe… and makes it a more personal conversation between her and the man she wants blessings for. One of those moments on record that Dionne Warwick seemed narcissistic and holier-than-thou (see! I’m praying for you! I’m an awesome girlfriend!) is made more of a shared thing by ReRe… and that interplay between her and The Sweet Inspirations (I Believe) is priceless….

Judge for yourself….

有必要因想著過去而喪失將來嗎？

Joan Osborne

JOAN OSBORNE
Today I had a nice chat with singer Joan Osborne, known for her huge hit, “One of Us.” This got me thinking about all the famous musicians, producers and singers I’ve met, spent time with, interviewed, and written articles about over the years. So, I decided to post this blog of excerpts from my interviews, a kind of “best-of” Mark Weber’s celebrity interviews blog, part one. Here goes:

Tyrese

TYRESE
I asked Tyrese, “When you’re singing a song, what matters more- the rhythm or the lyrics?” He said, “The lyrics, cuz sometimes you get off rhythm. As long as you’re into the song, it doesn’t matter if you’re on beat or not.” When I asked him what his fans were like at concerts, he replied, “Fans are like skin.” I said, “They’re all over you?” He replied, “Fans love skin. Give ‘em skin and you don’t even have to sing no more.”

Mary J. Blige

MARY J. BLIGE
I asked Mary J. Blige if she goes to church. She told me she went to her aunt’s funeral and, “it was so messed up how people asked me for autographs.” She also told me, “I grew up in church. I stopped going when I was 16. I kind of ‘went to hell’ for a minute. (Laughs) But, you know, right now I can’t do anything without Him. He’s the reason why I walk, talk, and He’s the reason why everything’s going so well. No man gets the glory for that.”

Dionne Warwick

DIONNE WARWICK
For someone who started her singing career way back in 1962, I asked Dionne if I could call her a legend. She replied, “I feel l always have a lot more to do. I’m a legend-in-the-making.” In today’s world, she sees herself as “a strong example of longevity and character.” Did you know she spends much of her time in Brazil? She told me, “I call it my stress-free country. Its got the values I grew up with. They put God first, love their families and adore their country.”

Jack Douglas with Aerosmith

PRODUCER JACK DOUGLAS
Producer Jack Douglas worked with rock band Aerosmith on their “Somewhere South of Sanity” release. He told me, “I started out as a folky guy, kind of like a beatnik, back in the early 1960s. I ended up writing campaign songs for Robert Kennedy when he was running for the New York State Senate. I ended up writing for Lyndon Johnson.” Jack went on to work with The Beatles and other famous groups. About John Lennon and Yoko Ono, he told me, “John was psychic and Yoko wasn’t. Yoko tried to portray herself as the psychic and John was like ‘this working class guy.’ John was totally psychic. He had the ability to relax anyone in the room. You felt this vibe coming off of him.” Jack won a Grammy for producing John & Yoko’s “Double Fantasy” album. With regards to Aerosmith, for whom he produced “Toys In The Attic,” “Rocks,” “Greatest Hits” and other albums, he said, “They still have the same energy they had back in the early 1970s, and that’s why their career is long. They are serious about making their music, which is fun stuff. After all these years, these guys are still having fun. That’s one of the big secrets to their longevity.”

Mutabaruka

MUTABARUKA
Jamaica’s dub poet and I had a great interview. His name means “one who is always victorious.” I asked him to define “dub.” He replied, “It originated in Jamaica. Dub is when you have the bass and drums in reggae music up front; it’s almost like they’re using the drum and bass as lead. That’s the basis of reggae- it’s what you identify reggae with.” Mutabaruka is known for his poetry set to music. About his career, he said, “My goal is to awaken the people with the poetry to make them wake their conscience and their consciousness so they can be motivated to do something about their situation that they find themselves in. So we try to make poetry work for the people rather than just as an artform- more of a working form of art.”

Scott Marshall's book

SCOTT MARSHALL ON BOB DYLAN
Scott Marshall wrote the book, “Restless Pilgrim: The Spiritual Journey of Bob Dylan.” I had the privilege of being a classmate of his while at Regent University. And I interviewed him about Dylan. I asked him, “Is Bob Dylan a Christian now?” He replied, “Some of the strongest arguments for the fact that Dylan is a believer is that he continues to express his faith through some of the songs he chooses to sing on stage. For example, between 1999 and 2002, he sang old Christian hymns like ‘Rock of Ages’ and ‘Pass Me Not, O Gentle Savior,’ as well as traditional songs with overt lyrics about Jesus- ‘Hallelujah, I’m Ready To Go’ and ‘Somebody Touched Me.’ Additionally, he has continued to sing songs from his two overt Christian albums, Slow Train Coming (1979) and Saved (1980), songs like ‘Gotta Serve Somebody,’ ‘I Believe In You,’ ‘Solid Rock,’ and ‘In The Garden.’”

Inner Circle

INNER CIRCLE
For some reason, I’ve always loved reggae music, so when I had a chance to interview the band Inner Circle, I was happy to do so. They’re the band known for the song, “Bad Boys,” the theme song for Fox’s long-running TV series, “Cops.” About their song ‘24-7-365,’ off their Reggae Dancer release, drummer Lancelot Hall told me, “It’s like a theme song for us.” Group co-founder Ian Lewis said the song, “depicts the whole thing of people telling us reggae won’t make it; we’ve been working 24-7-365 to keep reggae alive. If you listen to the words, ‘In our quest to reach our goal/Many a story we’ve been told,’ the basic meaning is that we really didn’t listen to all the negatives and stereotypes that people told us. We kept doing what we believed in.”

Arif Mardin

ARIF MARDIN
The Turkish-born producer/arranger, whose first name means “one who knows” in Arabic, was the mastermind behind countless hit singles from the likes of the Bee Gees, Chaka Khan, Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Phil Collins, and more. He got his start at Atlantic Records in 1963 and first hit it big with The Rascals’ “Good Lovin’” back in 1965. Here’s what he had to say about divas he has worked with…Bette Midler? “She has a great sense of humor; you look forward to working with her.” Aretha Franklin? “She knows exactly what she wants. How can you forget Aretha singing opera at 1998’s Grammy Awards in Pavarotti’s key– a man’s key? What a magnificent experience it was!” Barbra Streisand? “They say she’s difficult, but we hit it off. I mixed 5 songs for her in 7 days.” Patti LaBelle? “Patti’s patter between songs takes you to a place where you choke up emotionally.”

Darlene Love

DARLENE LOVE
Known for “He’s A Rebel” (1962) and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home),” among other hit songs, singer Darlene Love, who once had an affair with Bill Medley of the Righteous Brothers and appeared in the Lethal Weapon movies as Danny Glover’s character’s wife, told me she always wanted to do Gospel music, “especially because my father was a minister, and I have two brothers who are ministers.” She penned an auto-biography called “My Name Is Love,” about which she said, “Fans cried with me, they laughed with me, and they got mad with me. Most women say they’re so happy to read my book because it gives them faith to go on, no matter what.”
When my article on the toe picker from Texas (who plays his guitar with his feet since he was born without arms) made it into the National Enquirer, it was the most I ever got paid for writing an article: $1,100! Though many kids taunted the armless musician, he told me, “I became determined to show that I could learn to do everything with my toes that a normal child could do with his fingers.” Pope John Paul II hugged the musician in 1987, and told him “continue giving hope to all the people.” Tony’s been doing that ever since, touring churches and schools worldwide. “I wave to the little kids with my toes. They laugh and smile.”

Londa Larmond

LONDA LARMOND
Canadian Gospel singer Londa Larmond told me about her sexual abuse and its effect on her for an article I wrote that was published in Gospel Today magazine. She said, “One night, I sat on the bed in the darkness and told God that I was going to kill myself. I didn’t want to live anymore. There was no point, as far as I was concerned. I didn’t feel like anyone cared about me. I told God that if He did not step in, I was about to overdose on some pills. I told Him that I knew He was the King of kings and the Lion of Judah and sovereign and all of that, but I needed Him to be my ‘Daddy’ at that point in time. I told Him that I wanted Him to come and hold me and give me that peace that passes all my understanding.” And God did just that. Londa said she “felt a peace in my room like never before. I was delivered from my past, my low self-esteem and all my emotional issues. God’s presence filled my room and I cannot explain how awesome it felt. I put the pills away and worshiped all over my house.”

I just stumbled across a great site that reviews EVERY lush soap product EVER. Lushie.com! While many of the reviews are for now discontinued products, lots of the perennial stand-bys are there, and it’s a bit of a heartbreaking trip down Lush-memory lane. It seems Lush has discontinued more amazing products than most lines will ever have. I mean, Sparkle Bars? Come on! (The Glitterbug is all we have left, it seems, of a once proud Sparkle Bar tradition…) The site also offers interesting tidbits that novice Lush fans like myself might not know; the Mange Too massage bar is edible!? that black stuff on Demon In The Dark is not soap?!

In addition to that little morsel, I’m also gonna chuck a quick review of the EOS lip balm egg into this entry.

I’ve been seeing this balm around the blogs for awhile now and finally picked it up, but, I gotta say, it’s not worth all the hype it’s getting. The round packaging is interesting but a waste of space, and the rubberized exterior (rather like NARS’s packaging) is a dust and grit magnet. The rounded balm inside is very imprecise to apply so it’s all too easy to end up with “greasy mouth,” and as my roommate pointed out, some people might feel that the inner dome of balm “grosses them out.” In the plus column the scent is amazing (I got Summer Fruit) and lingers for, literally, 15 minutes. Surprisingly, it has no flavor, but that’s good becaues sweet balms just encourage you to lick your lips more and get in the vicious cycle of dryness. Is it worth it? Well, since I bought it I have been applying it obsessively for the delicious smell, but if you’re covered in the balm department (which I more than am) you should just walk on by.

especially when your big sister is international star Dionne Warwick. Hell, even the French call her the black pearl!

enter Delia Mae “Dee Dee” Warwick

I thought of her today since it’s been slightly over a year since this member of the Drinkard Music dynasty that gave us her, her sister Dionne, her aunt Cissy Houston and her cousin, Whitney Houston (*CRACK IS WHACK* sorry, you can’t help yourself with that now can you) passed away at age 63… and also how much it really sucks to be a very very talented person… in the shadow of your big sister, possibly because she’s thinner or more attractive.. or by the realities of birth order, just got to grab the brass ring first.

But Dee Dee also had the misfortune of recording great songs, for what I assume are labels with no idea how to promote them. Betty Everett can’t claim Linda Ronstandt stole “You’re No Good” from her (despite the extremely familiar arrangement) cause Dee Dee did the grinding original. Nor can Madeline Bell get all butthurt that The Supremes/Temptations version of “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” totally eclipsed her top 40 version a short 7 months later… since her version eclisped poor Dee Dee’s sweet original.

It’s enough to think a great soul sister should give up trying… but… then there were still stellar moments like her fantastic song about being totally embarassed by your husbands mistress, who has no clue he’s actually married, at a dinner party in “She Didn’t Know (She Kept on Talking).” I love how despite how angry and hurt Dee Dee sings the song, she seems most upset that her husband is fucking this brainless idiot.

The odd thing is, if you were to listen to Dee Dee not knowing who she was related to, you’d probably think she sounded familiar. Despite having a more deeply rooted alto than her older sister and her aunt, there is a similarity in tonality and phrasing between all 3 relatives that to me shows, “oh here’s a group of people that grew up singing together.”

Also, if you give her Mercury years a good listen you’ll get to see where early 1960s New York Uptown soul found it’s way up the Hudson River to Albany and basically died trying to absorb every trend in R&B within it’s smooth nonchalant gait, from Phil Spector pulverizing drumming (“You Don’t Know What You Do To Me” you can barely hear Dee Dee, a strong singer, in the center of the mono mix, a lot like the way he drowned out The Cystals) and weird Vandellas/Aretha hybrids (“Worth Ev’ry Tear I Cry”).

Long as she’s not the forgotten lil sis.. I’m totally ok with that.

(after the Gene McDaniels Phil Spector alike, Dee Dee sings her first two real chart successes, “I Want To Be With You” and “We’re Doing Fine.” We’re Doing Fine is one of my favorites)

By Nickie Wang American singer Dionne Warwick’s concert at the Araneta Coliseum pushed through last

By Nickie Wang

American singer Dionne Warwick’s concert at the Araneta Coliseum pushed through last Friday, Oct. 2, despite inclement weather, but only 17 percent of the tickets were sold.

Songstress Dionne Warwick

The concert, dubbed A Memorable Evening with Dionne, which was fronted by local R&B singer Jay-R and a band called Flow, was delayed for an hour because of poor attendance. It was scheduled to start at 8 p.m.

The concert came in the wake of storm Ondoy’s wrath, which left hundreds dead and thousands homeless. President Gloria Arroyo had already declared the entire country in a state of calamity, in anticipation of yet another typhoon, Peping, which was expected to hit landfall during the weekend.

According to the organizers, text messages circulating before the concert claimed that Peping had been upgraded to Category 5 and that power would be cut by 9 p.m. (later refuted by Pagasa) had already affected the ticket sales.

Around 400 people showed up to watch the 68-year-old songstress perform in a venue with a maximum seating capacity of 15,000. And just like her previous concerts, Warwick did not do an encore. She opened the concert with her classic hit “Walk On By.”

According to some members of entertainment press who attended the concert, people were asked to move forward and occupy the empty seats in the VIP and patron areas.

“The concert was okay, she’s Dionne Warwick and we already know how she performs. The only thing that we didn’t like was when the time she spoke with the crowd, her voice was very soft. We could hardly hear her,” said one of the concert attendees.

Warwick, who is the aunt of Whitney Houston, is popular for hits like “I Say A Little Prayer,” “A House Is Not A Home,” “Always Something There To Remind Me,” to name a few.

When Warwick arrived on Oct. 1, she said that the proceeds of the event will be donated to the victims of storm Ondoy.

Australian duo Air Supply

Meanwhile, sales from Air Supply’s Now & Forever concert the following day were respectable enough to consider the show a success. According to Oscar San Pedro, the concert’s publicist, more than 4,000 people attended the event, which was also held at the Araneta Coliseum a day after Dionne Warwick’s concert.

“For this type of event, the number of people who attended [the concert] is enough for us to say that it’s very successful. Despite the bad weather condition, people still went out to watch the band’s sixth concert here in the Philippines. And the concert started right on time,” San Pedro said.

The publicist furthered that the income of the Air Supply’s concert will also be donated to the victims of floods caused by the recent storm.

Benefit concert

Considering the weather condition in Metro Manila, also brought by the super typhoon Peping, producers of Katy Perry’s concert decided to postpone the show. The Katy Perry Live in Manila one-night concert was scheduled Oct. 3 at the SM Mall of Asia Concert Grounds.

The “Waking Up In Vegas” singer was saddened by the recent disaster that wreaked havoc in Metro Manila and to the surrounding areas and promised to make the show bigger and more relevant. The producers of the Katy Perry gig announced that they are going to transform the concert into a fund-raising event for the benefit of storm Ondoy victims.

Rumors that American Idol runner-up David Archuleta would be joining Perry at the concert, which is now tentatively scheduled on Nov. 14, also circulated around the metro. Archuleta is a recent visitor to the Philippines and performed in a sold-out concert at the MOA Concert Grounds together with AI winner David Cook. The historical concert was attended by more than a hundred thousand people.

Another concert was also postponed due to rough weather. Rising Fil-Am star Stephanie Reese, whose show was initially slated on Oct. 2 at the Music Museum, moved her pre-Carnegie Hall concert on Oct. 12. At a press conference for the concert, Reese announced that she is raising funds to build a village for some 30 poor families in Bicol. Afetr the devastation, the Miss Saigon star has pledged to donate part of the concert’s proceeds to the victims of the calamity.

Legendary singer Joe Longthorne is all set to sign with one of the UK’s fastest growing book publishers within the next fortnight. His autobiography is scheduled for release in Spring 2010 – just prior to his 50-date UK tour, followed by his US and Worldwide tour taking in Las Vegas.

Joe is presently lined up to appear on the same bill as Joan Rivers or Dionne Warwick. He is also set to receive a silver heart in March, the top award from the Variety Club of Great Britain, who have already honoured him previously. Writer and performer Chris Berry is working closely with Joe and is delighted with the news. ‘We have worked very hard to ensure that we have the right publisher, one that understands and is fully committed to Joe. We see the autobiography as being a potential chart topper and the whole of Joe’s tour next year will be The Book Tour.’

Here’s a story about Dionne Warwick…from Joel Tabor (@thepetfoodguy).

Dionne Warwick stopped in my pet food store one day when she was moving from California to NJ.
No one recognized her, she had a cap pulled down wearing jeans, etc. I offered to help her once. Then I offered another time about a 1/2 hour later.
She said as a going away present, someone gave her 2 dogs. So she had nothing… just stocking up. I ended up helping her.
The bill came to about $ 300 and all she had was a $1000 American express Money order. I had no change. I looked at her, asked her if she was indeed Dionne Warwick.
I said once she settles down, she can come in to pay me, so I let her take everything home.
She came in the next day!!! All dressed up up like she was going to a concert and she had her 2 dogs!
She wanted to show them to me and said that “no one ever did that for her” She paid me and gave me a big hug.

1. That’s What Friends Are For , Dionne Warwick, Elton John, and Gladys Knight

Although it was first recorded in 85′, it was the No. 1 hit of 1986. The song was originally released by Rod Steward in 82′ but this cover version was put out to raise money for America Foundation of AIDS Research. And raise it did … $3 million to be precise.

2. Whitney Houston – How will I know.

Claimed the No.1 place on Billboard Charts in February 1986 – bumping my number 1 pick out of first place.
