best beauty advice from a beauty queen/make-up artist: waterproof mascara!

when in last night’s miss south pacific interview portion, one of my favorite candidates, tonga’s paea williams, said that her best make-up advice to ladies is “waterproof mascara”, i knew she was my kind of beauty queen. and you have to trust her on that: she is a make-up artist by profession in hawaii.

my friends all know i never leave the house without mascara. it’s my thing. while most pinays and, as i found out here, fijians never miss swiping on lip color, i frequently go bare-lipped but perfectly fine as long as my lashes are covered.

with that, off i went to one of my most-trusted make-up sites, total beauty, to see what they think are the best waterproof mascaras in the market today. and i was happy to see a good mix of drugstore, bridge and luxury brands in their list of 12 best waterproof mascaras:

a good waterproof mascara doesn’t flake, stays put the whole day, won’t give you raccoon eyes. best for tropical climates because it withstands heat and sweat, you can even take a dip and it doesn’t run on you. if you’re attending a wedding where you expect hours of tears, dancing and general partying, your waterproof mascara will not ruin your face in photos.

so how do you remove it? waterproof make-up used to only respond well to oil or chemical make-up removers. but thanks to science, now waterproof mascara can be removed with ordinary soap and water. isn’t technology swell?

Détrôné par Dubaï au fil des ans, Beyrouth compte redevenir une destination privilégiée pour le luxe au Moyen-Orient, avec l’implantation de grands noms tel Dior ou Louis Vuitton, et des “souks” modernes qui offriront le nec plus ultra du shopping.

“Le luxe grignote davantage d’espace et s’étend comme une tâche d’huile”, dit Guillaume Boudisseau, de la société de conseil immobilier Ramco à Beyrouth. Le centre-ville inaugurera prochainement ce qui était, il y a 20 ans, un champ de bataille en pleine guerre civile: ses anciens souks populaires, reconstruits par le géant immobilier Solidere dans une version plus sophistiquée pour plus de 100 millions de dollars. Aux côtés de marques grand public, ces souks –400 projets de magasins, dont 49 de bijoux–, compteront des enseignes tel Yves Saint Laurent, Chloé, Burberry ou Vivienne Westwood. Ils jouxtent les rues Foch et Allenby, sortes d’avenue Montaigne ou de Sloane Street, qui accueilleront également de nouvelles marques de luxe. “Le centre-ville est le passage obligé pour le luxe au Liban”, constate M. Boudisseau, en référence aux marques déjà implantées telles Armani, Berluti, aux maisons de célèbres couturiers libanais comme Elie Saab et Zuhair Murad, et aux appartements à plus d’un million de dollars du front de mer, où se dressent les hôtels les plus chers du Liban. “Beyrouth va devenir une destination de choix jusqu’à récupérer sa place d’ici à deux ans”, avance Tony Salamé, PDG d’Aïshti, le groupe libanais qui a le plus de contrats de franchise dans le luxe. Selon lui, le marché à Beyrouth augmente à près de 15% en rythme annuel, avec des clients n’hésitant pas à dépenser jusqu’à 200.000 dollars par saison.

Surnommé le “Paris du Moyen-Orient” dans les années 1950-60, Beyrouth s’est imposé de nouveau comme la vitrine du luxe dans les années 90, malgré le marasme économique. Mais avec l’assassinat du dirigeant Rafic Hariri en 2005, qui a plongé le pays dans une période d’instabilité, Dubaï a nettement pris le dessus grâce à des investissements qui ont fait exploser le nombre de boutiques de luxe. Aujourd’hui, la crise mondiale qui a frappé de plein fouet les pays du Golfe pourrait changer la donne. “Nous avons une chance de reconquérir la première place car Dubaï a souffert énormément, même s’il reste numéro un en termes de volume et de pouvoir d’achat”, souligne M. Salamé. “Sa clientèle, des millionnaires russes qui faisaient entre 60 et 65% des chiffres d’affaires, a disparu”. Mais, rappelle M. Boudisseau, atteindre cet objectif nécessite une stabilité dans le pays en vue d’attirer les investissements et développer un marché capable de rivaliser avec celui de Dubaï. Et la capitale libanaise a un atout de taille, celui de l’image. “Pour les Arabes, notre capitale reste la fenêtre sur tout ce qui est branché”, dit M. Salamé, dont le groupe a investi 15 millions de dollars dans une quinzaine de nouvelles boutiques. Les magasins de luxe se situent dans des ruelles piétonnes élégantes avec une architecture qui date du mandat français (1923-1943). “C’est de l’ancien rénové qui donne un charme particulier, un cachet qu’on ne retrouve pas dans le Golfe, où c’est plus aseptisé”, souligne M. Boudisseau. “C’est très moderne et intime en même temps”, affirme Wafa al Ayouti, une riche touriste égyptienne, en sortant d’un magasin de luxe. “C’est comme Paris!”, s’écrie sa mère, les bras chargés de paquets. Pour Fadwa, une Emiratie, les souks aux arcades en bois sont “le New Dubaï, en plus beau”. Mais certains ont la nostalgie des temps révolus. “Ce ne sont plus les souks populaires de ma jeunesse”, dit Randa abi Rjaili, mi-triste, mi-admirative. “Ils ont gardé les noms des ruelles, mais je ne m’y retrouve plus. Je me sens plus en Europe qu’à Beyrouth”, lâche-t-elle.

Señores, señoras, por fin podemos rendirnos a la elegancia, un término que muy pocos pueden abanderar. Y muchos menos, pueden abanderar en el deporte (no hay un gran número de deportistas a los que podamos otorgar este calificativo). Y menos aún, en entrenadores de fútbol, porque sólo hay uno que lo sea: Pep Guardiola.

El técnico del Barça (amén de sus logros futbolísticos) ha conseguido imprimir al fútbol una estética alejada de los cánones del chándal, los mismos trajes de siempre, las camisas sudadas y el abuso del estilo “cani” hortera. Se decanta por trajes de Dior, Prada, Armani, Dsquared2 o de Toni Miró (para quien desfiló en Gaudí).

Le aconsejamos fervientemente imitar su estilo milanés si desea estar a la moda y ser elegante sin estridencias. Las claves son bastante sencillas: trajes estilizados, con pantalón ligeramente apitillado y corbata estrecha, normalmente del mismo color de traje, combinando colores sólidos con rayados. Resulta especialmente interesante su idea de combinar jerseys y rebecas con trajes y levitas. Guardiola además suele darle especial importancia al cinturón y al pañuelo como complementos. Es clásico a la vez que moderno, elegante sin ser rancio, actual y sofisticado, una imagen pulcra e impecable.

No obstante, parte del merecido éxito se debe a su esposa, que fue quien despertó en el entrenador el interés por el mundo de la moda…

No se trata de dinero. Cristianos Ronaldos y Beckhams del mundo, apartaos, esto es un hombre elegante.

While others prefer the high-profile title of “Fashion Cities” such as Milan, Paris and London. Le Look keeps their eyes on the plazas, alleys and bars of Barcelona’s 5 different barrios which make up the mix and match fabric of the city’s street fashion scene. LE LOOK’s cameras capture hunt down real people- nonconformists that happily mix H&M with Dior and can rock Alexander McQueen with the same ease of toting a 2 euro purse from one of the many vintage stores on Calle Carme.

This past Thursday Le Look invaded Vintage Bar in the Borne, and turned the space into it’s very own urban fashion incubator. The venue which is a great space for parties is divided into several rooms and gives the feeling of stepping into a posh living room rather than a cramped Barcelona bar. Hosted by LELOOK and the folks at Fashionfreax this event was the launch party for the latest collection of fashion designer and muse ANNA K. Normally a party like this would be filled with pretentious fashionistas but the party was incredibly laid back with more people talking face to face rather than into their cell phones.** Special Thanks to our man Martin Hesbert, for documenting the night’s vibe.

DJ Mustache had the sounds in check while VJ Sacha provided the eye candy in the background.However, the cameras were turned on the crowds at this particular party- the dress code on the invite was in bold. The simple instructions printed in 24 font EXTRAVA K.

LE LOOK staffers mingled around the room, picking out the most interesting looks and inviting the guests to strike a pose in front of their impromptu photo studio in the bars foyer. At midnight, those looks that had managed to raise eyebrows (I am talking about you bearded man in a blue dress) were invited to hit the catwalk and strut their lelook for cava sipping crowds.

Barcelona’s cool hunters, fashion editors, and stylist were out supporting LE LOOK in full force.

LE LOOK’s last event back in April made headlines and this seasons party was no different. Michael Mueller from Barcelona’s MINIGUIDE* , summed it up best… ” It’s nice to see Barcelona finally coming into its own and setting trends rather than following them ”.

I don’t know how most people do it, but I’ve developed this elaborate and fussy system for organizing my (stupid-large) makeup collection. It revolves around a first, second, and third string drawer/bag concept. First string items are stuff I go for everyday, new things I’ve just bought, things I like to wear on the infrequent night out, and things I don’t use much but want to try to work into my routine. Second string definitely has some overlap, with back-up going out looks, quality lip products that I just need a break from, and my out of season favorites that get bumped back up to first string when it’s their time to shine. Third string is, well, basically everything else. It’s the low quality, drugstore stuff that I’ve stopped using, gifts of stuff I never liked, nail polish since I only reach for it once in a blue moon, and generally stuff I don’t use but can’t get rid of. Exempted from this system of course are the products I keep with me in my school bag and the stuff that is dedicated to a certain purse. For example, each purse has its dedicated travel size hand cream, a balm or gloss, and sometimes some small brushes and/or an eyeliner that always stays in a given purse. This way I can just grab one or two key items for my look while everything else is on hand without any thought. Further deviations include my magnetic palettes, which I use whenever I know I’m gonna be out and about for 24 hrs+, and I have one of those for day-to-day and one for special occasions.

Jeg har vært i Oslo i vel et døgn igjen, og kom nettopp hjem. Denne gangen hadde jeg tid til å kikke meg rundt og shoppe litt også, og hadde med kollega som var svært støttende hver gang jeg mente at jeg trengte noe. Gode greier Høyest prioritet denne gangen var Standard-butikken, siden man har en nevø som så inderlig ønsker seg latebæsj til jul. Slike ønsker må selvsagt oppfylles, og det ble med litt forskjellig annet fra den butikken også

Jeg begynte forresten raidet hos MAC på Glassmagasinet, så nå er mitt behov for øyeskygger atter en gang tilfredsstilt for lang tid framover. Gull, bronse og sølv. Jeg sier ikke mer. Lekkert!

Så var vi innom Steen & Strøm og ble swept away av en svensk parfymeselger av Guds nåde. Han kapret oss ved Chanelprøvene, snakket og dusjet og forklarte og holdt på så vi ble aldeles svimle og begeistret. Jeg fikk med meg en prøve på Cristalle eau verte, som blir omtalt separat ved første høve. I tillegg ligger her papirprøver på Chance og Cristalle, som begge er nydelige dufter. Chanel er i det hele tatt nydelig. Sukk

Svensken avsluttet, da han hørte at jeg er en Dune-dame, med å svisje oss bortom Diors prøveflasker, hvor han holdt et lengre og sterkt engasjert innlegg m/ekstatiske håndbevegelser som akkompagnement, om Midnight Poison, og overrakte en godt sprayet prøvestripe. Jeg har aldri en gang overveid disse poison-parfymene, aner ikke hvorfor, men denne virker skikkelig vidunderlig, så den kommer på lista over de jeg skal anskaffe prøve på.

Hos la Prairie fikk jeg tigget til meg en prøve på den nye Platinum, omtalt hos Alt Godt, og tok med prøvelapper derfra også, men de “taler” ikke til meg sånn umiddelbart. Vi får se når jeg har sniffet litt.

Det er nydelig å være hjemme igjen. Her skal sofakrølles i kveld, og så er det hjemmekontor med bærbar på kjøkkenbordet og utsikt til ivrige småpipper i morgen.

My fashion crush began with the Rachel Zoe episode where Rach and Brad go to Paris. The John Galliano fashion show, remember it? With the snow, and the models emerging from the light tunnel created with laser lights?

And those wicked shoes?

(Which he’s kinda known for).

Ok, here’s my attempt to be studious and informative: He was born in Gibraltar in 1960, his father is Spanish, but he moved to London and is considered a British designer. He’s noted for his avant garde designs which translate into street-saavy pieces to be worn by normal people too. He’s been awarded all kinds of accolades from the industry.

He’s been criticized for his designs being too antiquated, but I love his mix of history and modernity.

In 1995, he was lead designer at Givenchy. And in ‘97, when Dior was bought by LVMH, Bernard Arnault offered Galliano the House of Dior, giving the phrase “Dior’s New Look” an entirely new meaning.

He considers Charlize Theron as his muse. (But that’s only because he’s never met me).

History meets absurdity, meets luxury, meets theatricality. Love love love!

Esmaltes, eis uma coisa que mulher adoooora né? Também temos uma infinidade de cores liiindas pra escolher a cada semana!

A Colorama tá com uma coleção liiinda, tem vários tons diferentes de rosa, roxo, azul, amarelo, laranja.. e também ela lançou essa linha de única camada que é ótima mesmo.. além disso, tem cores q eu tô tentada em passar!

Nesse verão a Arezzo foi que estreiou nessa linha de cosméticos, lançando uma coleção de esmaltes (R$9,90 cada)! As cores tão bem bonitas.. eu gostei!

Agora, o queridinho da estação é o Rosa.. assim como no desfile de Johan Galliano

Katsui graduated from Central Saint Martins College after studying at Parsons The New School for Design. Yagi graduated from Doshisha University and Central Saint Martins College.
The brand, mintdesigns was launched in 2001. They have been in Tokyo Collection since ‘03 S/S. The awards they won include the Moet et Chandon New Designer’s Award in 2005. In 2007, mintdesigns garage store opened in Shibuya PARCO. They presented their collection in the 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT THIS PLAY! show. In 2008, they presented the opening show at São Paulo Fashion Week for ‘09 S/S. Both designers currently hold positions as guest professors at the Faculty of Art and Design at Osaka Seikei University. In 2009 they presented their collection at the Milano Salone TOKYO FIBER ‘09.Mint Designs turned out a dainty crop of dresses featuring details such as shimmery stripes, textured fabric and quirky graphics. One frock featured a darling print of tiny Charlie Chaplins, while another showcased circular cutouts along the sides.

Weihnachten rückt unaufhörlich näher und Christian Dior überrascht uns wieder mit einem Special. Ein mit dem Aurora Borealis Kristall (aus dem Hause Swarowski) geschmücktes Medaillon lässt unsere Augen glänzen. In den 50er Jahren bat Dior das Haus Swarowski um einen Kristall, der an die reflektierenden Sonnenstrahlen im Versailler Spiegelsaal erinnern sollte. Das Ergebnis war eben jener Aurora Borealis Kristall, der diesen Winter nicht nur unser Outfit verschönert, sonder auch unsere Lippen mit seinem Inhalt verwöhnt. Im Innern befindet sich ein Lipgloss, welches unsere Lippen pflegt und verführerisch schimmern lässt.

P.S. Aurora borealis bedeutet übrigens “Polarlicht” und wenn man Bilder des Himmels während einer solchen Erscheinung beobachtet, dann ist der Name Programm!

Today is one of those days where I am obsessed with the internal creation of an outfit, colors, and the general appearance of people. Image is almost everything.

This is a shoe that I have been drooling over since 2007, from Dior:

YES, that is green python skin. Yes, it is a huge platform. And yes, I love it. I think its around $3K. Jessica Stam is gorgeous.

This next shoe is Yves Saint-Laurent, another one of my favorite designers.

This shoe is amazing, sexy, and reminiscent of 70’s plush and platform. I would probably die if I had this shoe. I especially love YSL’s continuity and mystery and how amazingly classic the designs will always be.

I have finally invested in the important things needed in a wardrobe: a nice leather purse, a watch, and skinny jeans. Needless to say, I am obsessed. I will have to show you what I have purchased.Which means, photo shoot time!

So notice the following: White Leather Boyfriend Watch from Fossil, Red Leather Convertible Purse from Latico, skinny jeans from Macy’s, Vintage houndstooth scarf, Blazer.

I love what I have bought recently. I totally needed them. I don’t care what any of you say. I really did need a new watch and new jeans, I could’ve lived without the purse but my coworker talked me into it. Its the first leather purse in years!!! I really love it. And red is a total staple color in anyone’s closet. I definitely love the red, black, and white color scheme. It works well for me.

I have been watching The Rachel Zoe Project lately. I really love her, she has amazing taste and style, and I sort of aspire to be like her one day.

Sigh. Fashion. How I love ya.

Oh, I discovered www.pandora.com. It is like a radio station that plays your favorite genres of music. I’m sure A LOT of people know about Pandora, but I didn’t, and it is AMAZING. And I love it. I discovered some good bands: Editors, The Sea and Cake, and Band of Horses.

Life is wonderful, things are great, I couldn’t be happier.
