Let me say this. I have been Blogging non-stop this past week. I have A LOT of personal stuff going on and this has been the most perfect mental distraction for me. I like to write and wish I would have had the opportunity to do it for a living. Please do not get spoiled though, because in the near future, my postings will become sparse and in-between.

Baby # 2 insists that I cannot propel our readers’ years ahead to the ‘dirt bike accident.’ I must give my readers some sort of history, explaining how I ended up being a Motocross Mamma in the 1st place. Fair enough.

As a child, I liked to play with anything that moved. It started with the break-my-neck tire incident at age 3, then there was the tricycle incident at age 4, (the neighbors used cooking oil to remove my leg from the spokes,) I fell off a horse at age 5, crashed my 12-speed bike at age 8, crashed my go-cart at age 9, rolled the ATV down a hill at age 10 (ouch,) the skateboard ramp we built so I could catch big air at age 11, went over my brother’s handlebars at age 12 (on the dirt bike he was ‘giving me a ride’ on,) sank a boat in Lake Tahoe and swam back around age 13, crashed my moped scooter at age 14 (no I wasn’t legally allowed to have one,) flew off the jet ski into the harbor at age 15 (again, ouch,) crashed trying extreme roller skating at age 16, and then moved onto crashing bigger and better things…like our family car. None of this deterred me from the next toy I could find.

My brother, (Bro#1,) and my ex-boyfriend, (UTBH,) had this great idea, let’s buy this ‘80s dirt bike from a garage sale and teach Mon Cherie how to ride it, hee hee hee. Now in order to provide full disclosure, Bro#1 was a professional test-rider for Kawasaki for almost 10 years. He tested the prototypes of everything from quads and jet skis, to working on the Pit Crew for a famous Super Bike Rider. My Bro#1 has built sand rails, race trucks and car engines from scratch in our garage my whole life. He is that guy. For a case of beer, he would change my break pads, or teach me how to do it myself. Also, I was on the Pit Crew of two different Off-Road race teams in high school. I had previously gone out into the middle of nowhere, in the Mexican desert, many times for the Baja 1000, (among many other locales we visited.) There was no doubt I wouldn’t have a problem sitting on a dirt bike and making it go forward…but what this little riding excursion morphed into, those boys never imagined.

We drove out to Beaumont and I hopped on what we all fondly referred to as “the Crapper.” A blue Honda. Looked like something out of an old Elvis Presley flick. And we were off. I spent the whole day listening to Bro #1 and UTBH shout, “stop crying,” “no, no the other brake,” “look out for the truck!” “again, motocross riders don’t cry!” and “stop, that bike is not made for those hills!” I was hooked, I didn’t fall once that entire day ~ the crying was mainly from getting screamed at repeatedly by two men for flooding the engine and blowing a few spark plugs. Oh yea, and one minor dent/ scratch in Bro #1’s paint job on his brand new truck. Are we having fun yet?!?

A century before about 1902 almost the roads were dirt! By the 1920’s off road events and trails were popular in Britain, Asia, and Europe. Most bikes were modified street models. And these modified high speed bikes are called “Dirt bikes”

Nowadays these dirt bikes are fully equipped with modern technologies such that it can be used on high speed, uneven muddy roads, pits etc.

These Dirt bikes are less weight, off road motorcycles built with a rugged construction, strong suspension and special tires to navigate hilly, rough terrain in all types of weather. Adverse conditions require these Dirt bikes to be specially constructed, with many highly modernized components incorporated into motorcycles, including sports bike and cruisers. The recent development in this dirt bike is pit bike which is the miniature form of it.

Now the latest craze in adult racing is on miniature (60-125cc) motorcycles called mini bikes or pit bikes. These bikes could easily navigate the pits, the area designated for parking, and setting up prior to an event. The pit bikes are usually manufactured for children and these can be transformed for adults in the following ways by adding handle bars, increasing the suspension, exhaust plastics. Other incentives which give hope for the adults are the larger, bored 80cc-147cc engines and reinforced frames. According to norms, the normal requirement for this kind of miniature dirt bike is14 inch front wheel and 12 inch rear. But the problem is none of the big manufacturers of bikes producing pit bike or miniature dirt bike. Till now we obtain these kinds of dirt bikes only by upgrading the children specific dirt bike. Upgraded bike with latest technology inspires the youngsters to show their hidden talents in dirt bike racing. So let we hope the manufacturers to start produce the first class dirt bikes so that this kind of awesome bike races lives for ever.

It’s a gorgeous day! Thank you God! November 8th and beautiful and warm. I think I’ll

It’s a gorgeous day! Thank you God! November 8th and beautiful and warm. I think I’ll do something I don’t normally do. It’s a great day for it.

I’m going on a bike ride!

Sure, you’re thinking she ALWAYS rides her bike. I ride “a” bike every day. Or close to every day. Close enough it would be hard to do the stats.

But today I’m going to get out the mountain bikes and ride some dirt. Mostly because I want to ride, but I don’t want to pack up and leave home and spend two hours driving. So I’ll do what I can from here, home. And home is neighbor to my siblings property which due to a recent over haul is now mostly tree free and new paths abound. So why not? It’s dirt. It’s dry. It’s not going to kill my knees. And I don’t have to pack up and drive somewhere.

I use to ride the roads right from my house. I would get on my bike and go out one direction five miles, turn around and come back for a quick and hilly ten miler. But when the dogs became more populous than people, and the dogs weren’t properly restrained, and the one little bugger knocked me head first to the pavement at 20 miles an hour resulting in a three day hospital stay I stopped that route. So I had another route that took me to the other end where the state route started. I could get almost ten miles in, and ride around a little to get my ten. But the people honking and not caring that I was on a 17 pound bike versus their two thousand pound vehicle got me a little jittery. Not to mention the idiot in the truck who told David and I if he caught us on the road when he came back through he would hit us and kill us, the other idiot who thought it funny to open her car door on me and nearly give David a heart attack, and the moron who thought it funny to hurl a bottle at me as he flew by me at fifty miles an hour. These things got me too nervous to ride from my house. It also makes me wonder about the sadistic nature of my fellow human.

So I stick to the bike trails. Which are incredible. Though also not risk free. That’s another blog.

This makes me sad. It’s a beautiful area. The rides were beautiful and a great workout. This county is not flat by any means. I could not go half a mile in ANY direction without hitting some rollers. But to do that I have to take risks. And the risk is not in the activity. It’s the people. People who don’t have patience for someone on a bike. People who don’t quite understand that I am TOTALLY AWARE that their car can kill me, out run me, over power me and that I respect that. I respect that vehicle if not always the person controlling it.

But it’s a beautiful day and I want to do something out there that I enjoy. It’s a simple joy. And it’s a shame that our simple joys are restricted by thoughtless and unhappy people. You must be very unhappy to want to hurt someone out riding a bike. Or taking a jog. Or whatever it is someone else is doing for fun that angers you but is not hurting you in any way.

I hope I don’t come across any unhappy dogs or angst ridden deer today.

But I’m going to ride my bike.

I just ran across an article by Apple that said iPhones have a lifetime carbon footprint of 121 pounds of CO2. (Apple). Also, it turns out that iPhones are made with a number of toxic chemicals including BFR’s and PVC’s. (Greenpeace). Consumers use cell phones for an average of 18 months before switching to a new one, but given that the iPhone is a killer app, let’s extend the life expectancy to a nice round 2 years. This means the iPhone’s footprint is about 60 pounds of CO2 per year.

In the other corner, we have the much-maligned dirt bike. Dirt bikes have a product life of about 15 years. (Berkeley – Table 1). They also are held to emissions standards of 25g CO2 / km = 0.0887 lb CO2 / mile. (EPA). Also, the life-cycle carbon costs for a motorcycle (production, insurance, etc, but not actual driving) are 332 pounds of CO2 (22 pounds per year). (Berkeley – Table 11, Adding all fixed costs but not vehicle operation). With these considerations in mind, the average dirt bike rider, riding about 300 miles per year (20 trips at 15 miles / trip), nets only 49 pounds of CO2 per year. A smaller impact than that of the iPhone.

Interesting.

This past weekend, my man Dan was gone to a so-called Bachelor’s party. Not your regular boob

This past weekend, my man Dan was gone to a so-called Bachelor’s party. Not your regular boobs in your face-girls grinding on your crotch-kind of bachelor party, but a mudding party. The guys brought their 4-wheelers and bikes and hit the trails. Sounds like a good time to me…and I’m sure this guy’s soon-to-be-wife was happy to hear about his rather tame bachelor party. Other men out there should follow suit.

Anyway, Dan took his dirt bike and had a great time. I don’t know much about it other than that it’s a 1996 Honda and it’s a 250cc. A 250cc is a pretty big bike-I think it’s the biggest dirt bike engine you can get (correct me if I’m wrong, because I in fact know very little about bikes). Dan returned home on Sunday and posed the question which I had been dieing to hear: “Babe, do you want to go ride?”

OF COURSE I DO!

I have a bad habit of needing to try anything and everything…especially this “guy” stuff (hunting, shooting, driving big trucks, etc.). I know that I’m still a women and that women will never be able to do everything that a real man can do-but dang it I’m going to try cuz it looks like fun! This isn’t a new development in the world of Julie-I’ve always been like this. I will try anything at least once, and get really frustrated if I can’t do it, and try and try and try again until I can or I injure myself to the point where I can’t possibly try again. I guess I’m hard headed like that.

I wasn’t scared about riding the dirt bike. Dan made it look so easy, it couldn’t be that hard. I’ve seen plenty of girls ride dirt bikes and not die. I knew I could do it. Dan gave me a brief tutorial which consisted mainly of teaching me about the gears. For some reason I have brain block when it comes to shifting things-he also tried to teach me how to drive a stick a while back and it didn’t go so well. There’s just something about having to press something with your foot and hand simultaneously that makes my brain turn off. I decided that I just wanted to cruise around in first gear. No shifting to second this time around. Successfully shifting to second would be far too difficult for me and I didn’t want to try to do it all at once. So I got on the bike, kick started it, gave it some gas, pulled in the clutch, shifted from Neutral to First and was ready to go. Just like with a stick shift vehicle-you have to slowly let out the clutch while at the same time giving it a bit of gas. I do believe that I stalled the bike out about 10 times before my first successfull take off.

But I did it! I took off (and I use the term “took-off” very loosely as I was cruising in 1st gear at a snail like pace). I went around the pasture a couple times then decided to stop to reconvene with Dan and act all snobby about it-like it was no big deal that I had just ridden a huge dirt bike without killing myself.-like I had been riding my whole life-like I wasn’t scared that I was going to flip over the handle bars and get my precious face ran over by the bike. He was semi-impressed I think and I decided to give it another go. I was confident about starting the bike, steering and controlling the bike, and stopping (sort of). So I started it up again…and stalled out again and again and again. But finally I “took off” again. This time I was feeling much more confident. Maybe I should give it a little gas? Yeah-sounds like a good idea. Dan will be really impressed then. Did I mention that I’m still only in first gear?

So I pulled the throttle and before I knew it my front tire was in the air and I was headed directly for a fence. I saw my life flash before my eyes (not much to be seen), realized that I may possibly die, thought about Dan and wished I could see the look of terror on his face as I was doing a wheelie and heading towards a fence, and finally I let the throttle down. Just as the front tire hit the ground and I managed to slow down a bit-I hit the fence. I heard bones crushing-saw blood in my eyes-felt three teeth fly out of my mouth-and felt the bike run over my precious face.

Ok…totally kidding.

But I did run into the fence. Luckily I was going slow (I honestly felt like I was going 80 mph) and the fence had lots of brush on it so it was pretty cushy. The bike stalled out and I turned around to see Dan rushing up on the 4-wheeler. I hopped off the bike and said “Shit!” about ten times. I was mad at myself for not being able to react to the bike the way I should have. All I had to do was release the throttle, squeeze the clutch and hit the brake. Apparently my brain can’t think about doing three things at once when said brain thinks it may soon cease to exist. Dan said in his deep, calm voice, “Baby-I don’t think it’s anything worth swearing about.”

Oh jeez…way to drop me from a building back to reality. He does that to me sometimes when I get all worked up about things that don’t really matter. And he was totally right. It wasn’t worth swearing about. I didn’t die. Didn’t even get a scratch. Didn’t harm the fence or the bike; which was of course my main concern. And didn’t get my precious face run over. All was good and well with me and the world.

I took a few deep breaths, collected my thoughts, thought about the bike and what I did or didn’t do to cause my little accident, and started it back up.

By the end of the afternoon-I was doing pretty well. Feeling more confident on the bike-without being cocky, and having more fun. I even shifted to second to get some more speed (a huge milestone for someone who’s brain refuses to comprehend the idea of shifting/clutching). And didn’t do another wheelie again that afternoon. Success!

Here’s a pic of me on Dan’s bike. Don’t I look like I kinda-sorta know what I’m doing?

And here’s a picture of Dan on the bike. Ladies be warned….

Hope yall have a great day! And do something dangerous!

I have wanted a dirt bike since I was a little kid. I don’t recall now how or why exactly I fell in love with them, I just know that I obsessed over every Dirt Bike magazine I could get my hands on. Growing up on a farm in somewhat rural central New York state, you would think that I had a little dirt bike on the farm then. No. No I had a bmx bike that I rode and made revving “brrraaap! brrraaaaaaap!!” noises on, but I never had a dirt bike. Today, I took a step back into my childhood.

I still have gear to get (helmet, goggles, gloves, pants, jersey, knee and elbow pads, roost deflector, boots), but with the money I saved buying a used bike I’m feeling pretty damn good about it overall. I secretly hope to get enough gear tonight and tomorrow to take a quick ride this weekend! Stay tuned.

If you are looking into getting a neck roll/collar this might help you decide on which one to buy. Even if you aren’t in the market for one I suggest you keep reading because it could save a neck or collar bone, and that is the most common injury I hear about in motocross. I have been wearing the EVS RC2 Race Collar for the past season, and I will say that I’m glad that I bought it. First of all, I like the fitment and I hardly ever notice it when I ride or race; hardly any restriction. I make sure I wear it every time I ride a dirt bike because it doesn’t bother me. The RC2 is great protection when you get in an crash and slam your head against your chest or shoulders. I fortunately haven’t had any bad accidents with it, but I did flat land a jump and my chin would have hit my chest but the race collar prevented that from happening. I ended up having a bruise there, but who knows what it could have been if I wasn’t wearing the collar. All in all I think it should be a necessity for all riders that go somewhat fast because you honestly don’t know what will happen. It’s cheap enough that it will easily pay for itself and probably one hundred more after your first big crash that could break your collar bone. Go buy one now if you don’t have a neck collar already. Remember to have fun and stay safe. Thanks for viewing.

Are you thinking about buying a dirt bike for your kid but don’t know which bike to choose or

Are you thinking about buying a dirt bike for your kid but don’t know which bike to choose or look for? Well, this will give you info about the name brand bikes for kids and help you make a decision. Choosing the right bike for your young rider can be very important, especially if they’ve never ridden before. Kids start riding as young as three years old, so basically once they are able to ride a bicycle without training wheels they should be capable of riding a dirt bike. And please don’t put training wheels on a little dirt bike, that just defeats the purpose. There are a few factors that come in to play when finding the right dirt bike for a kid. Age, experience, size, and where you are going to ride all come in to play when looking for a bike. There are 50, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 125, and 150cc four-stroke dirt bikes that are mostly meant for off-road and trail riding. For the smaller two-stroke dirt bikes, there are a couple different 50s, 65s, and 85cc bikes. These are used for motocross racing.

Off-Road Bikes

50cc
There are a few different 50cc dirt bikes, but the most common is the Honda CRF50F/XR50R. This is where dirt biking starts for every little kid that has never ridden before. These things are almost bullet proof if you maintain it properly. If you are looking for a first bike for a kid that is under 7 then this is probably the best choice, unless they are bigger/taller than the norm. There is also the Suzuki JR50, Kawasaki KDX50 and Yamaha PW50; all of which are oil-injected 2-strokes that are very light and perfect for the smallest of riders, and the Yamaha TTR-50 which is about the same as the CRF, so it just depends what color you like best.

70 & 80cc
Honda made the CRF/XR70 and 80cc bikes for kids that are just starting, but a little too big for a 50cc. The 70 has a taller seat height with a little more power than the 50, but the 80 has a clutch which is perfect for training the little ones without letting them ride on a fast bike.

100/110/125/150cc
Honda has been known for their XR/CRF100 which reaches to a variety of riders. It has a clutch and is just right for the older kids to learn on if they are too big for the CRF80F. The 100 is a great trail bike because it has just enough power, and it’s also big enough for an adult, so this bike should be easy to find used, and cheap I might add. Kawasaki and Suzuki decided to make the ultimate pit bike for kids and adults. The KLX110/DRZ110 (Parts are interchangeable) has become popular because of how much power it has, or is able to put out, for its size. The 110 is an automatic, so it’s great for smaller riders that want more power than a 70 without going to a clutch yet. Yamaha also has a bigger off-road bike for kids, the TTR-125. The TTR-125 is a popular model for bigger kids just starting out. It has a clutch with enough power to haul riders around, young or old. Honda also has the CRF150F for riders that want more power and a taller ride height than the 100. Although the set-back for the 150 is that it weighs about as much as a full-size motocross bike. These mid-sized off-road bikes are popular for a reason, and this means that they have usually been ridden a lot and probably abused. So if you’re looking at buying a used one then make sure it is clean, it has somewhat low hours, and has been well maintained.

Motocross Bikes

50cc
There are a couple different name-brand 50cc motocross bikes for kids, and they are both KTM two-strokes. KTM has the 50 SX Mini, which is for the smallest beginning racers. There is also the 50 SX which is bigger and suits a little taller beginning racer. These bikes both have a one-speed automatic transmission and are liquid-cooled. KTM 50s are expensive, but they are perfect race bikes for your little kids that are ready to tear up the tracks. There are also Chinese companies with 50cc motocross bikes, such as LEM, Cobra, and others.

65cc
KTM and Kawasaki are the only name brand companies that still make a 65cc two-stroke motocross bike. KTM has the 65 SX which is more expensive and usually the racers that are serious buy them. Right from the factory KTM puts aftermarket parts on their bikes, such as VForce reeds on the two-strokes, handlebars, and Brembo brakes. The Kawasaki KX65 is what riders that just want to race buy because they are so cheap. That does not mean that they aren’t fast, they just aren’t always as reliable and don’t have a very high re-sale value. Both are great race bikes for intermediate younger riders in around the age 7-10 that have been riding for some time. These bikes are usually not used for trail riding because they are not as easy to ride and lug around as a four-stroke is.

85/105/150cc
85cc motocross bikes are the start for a young teen aged racer. They have more power than most any kid could use, which makes these
bikes a blast for adults or adrenaline-junkies as well. KTM, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha all make an 85cc two-stroke mx bike. Honda put a stop to their two-stroke inventory after 2007, but people still buy their late model bikes. Instead, Honda wanted to start a revolution for mini-bikes with their all new 150cc four-stroke motocross bike. It was well talked about, but once it came out it died slowly. They are powerful bikes and are easier to ride than an 85, but the weight and cost lost it for them. Usually these CRF150R’s (Big and small wheel) were bought by racers with money because they also needed quite a bit of maintenance. If you have money and your kid loves the easy ride-ability of a four-stroke then this would be a good race bike to buy. If you don’t have a deep pocket, then an 85 or 100/105cc two-stroke stroke is a great choice. Your kid will love you for getting them one of these bikes; before they flip it at least once, that is. If you find someone selling a used 85 that hasn’t been flipped, then you’re either lucky or they’re lying. 85s are pretty much race-only bikes. I’ve trail-ridden with one, and it was not very fun because of the lack of power down low. The Honda CR85R and Yamaha YZ85 hit harder and are more snappy than the others because they don’t have a power valve. KTM’s 85 SX comes with aftermarket goodies from the factory like all of their other bikes, so it’s probably the fastest out of the lot. Kawasaki’s KX85 and Suzuki’s RM85 are very similar and are used by many riders that are on a budget because of how cheap they can be. Honda and Suzuki both have a larger wheel 85, which helps those taller kids that quite aren’t ready for a 125 or 250f. Kawasaki and KTM have a big-bore 85 to compete in the supermini class (86-112cc). Kawasaki’s KX100 is a big wheel and has plenty of power for any young racer. KTM has a 105 SX which is one of the best power-to-weight ratio bikes you can buy, and also has larger wheels. When it comes down to choosing an 85,100/105, or a 150cc four-stroke motocross bike for your kid, it depends how big your pocketbook is, what fits your kid, and what color you like best. Thanks for reading, and good luck buying the right bike for your kid.

Our youngest doesn’t see being 3 as a handicap, but truth be told, at his young age he has already experienced age discrimination.

I know. The Law Offices of Sam Bernstein are about to be put on speed dial, trust me.

I can’t blame the big kids–they’re faster [barely], they’re stronger [on most days], and they have a much larger vocabulary [no denying that one.] M does what he can to keep up with them. He braves the bike ramps. He jumps the sidewalks on his two-wheeler. He yells and screams with the best of them. And arguably, he can ride our electric dirt bike as well as any kid who’s ever mounted the steel horse plastic pony.

Still, when you’re 7 or 8 or 9, chillin’ with the preschoolers isn’t on your list of “must-do” after school. The kids that are slightly closer to him in age are girls, and while better than nothing, generally aren’t the thrill seekers that he innately is. I mean, giving your American Girl a new hair-do might be cutting edge, true, but…can she ride a quad no-handed is really the question.

Even though my M can ride a quad “going no handlebars”, as he says, he often finds himself wandering alone. Just this afternoon I caught him sitting by himself pounding some boards together for pretend–designing a half-pipe for Tony Hawk no doubt. He’s a nomad on paved sidewalks. A restless wanderer, longing for a friend.

Anywho, last week he started preschool, and I probably don’t have to tell you–he loves it. It’s just a couple of hours a week, but it has given him the opportunity to hang out with other super-cool 3 year-olds who also enjoy the art of jumping, singing, drawing, and playing with trucks. Even though I nearly lost my mascara to TurboTears round 4 at the thought of my baby going to school, it has warmed the cockles of my heart [as my hubby would say] to see him in the company of so many tender souls.

Which makes today so great.

On the way home from his school I looked in the rear view mirror and asked him, “M, what was the best part of your day today?”

You wanna know what he said?

He said, “Having friends.”

Awwww! [sniff sniff]

A moment of silence, please. Show a little respect for the poor kid.

This conjures up two points I wish to make:

1. That he does, obviously, feel terribly left out when the big kids take off [again, I can't blame them, but he does feel it].

2. It also reminds me to verbalize my thankfulness for my own friends. There are many times when I sit at home and think “What would I do without her in my life? What would I do without her to call, to talk me through it, to make me put down the chocolate. For ten seconds.” When I think of all the people I call friend, I feel so. grateful.

So to all my dear, dear friends out there who have walked beside me long after doll days and bike rides ['cause some of you have been around that long!], thank you for being there, for loving me, for filling my life with blessings overflowing.

Today I join my little boy in being thankful for YOU.

Here are some more pics from the Capel motocross.

I love this sequence. The first thing the guy said when he landed was ‘did you get that on film?’

I practically had to lie down on the track to get this shot

This guy landed right at my feet. Was pretty scarey at first but it was ok when I jumped behind the tree!

This guy took one look at the log jump and said “No Way”.

My favourite shot of the day. The guy in the background had wimped out and didn’t want to do the jump. The guy going over the jump got some of the highest air of the day.

I had a great time catching the guys (and girls) in action and scared the crap out of myself a couple of times as the guys came off the bikes at my feet.

All the bikes lined up in the Parc Ferme.

The de-brief before the 64km ride begins.

First stack (that I saw anyway) only about 500m into the course!

This poor guy got stuck behind someone else trying to get out of the bog. As you can see he got bogged himself and thought he’d spray the guy behind him too.

I know its not a ‘perfect’ photo but I just love the movement in this one.

The guys certainly weren’t in it to win it. They stopped to help the other dude out of the bog and stayed for a chat too!

2004 Kawasaki & Suzuki 250F

If you’re looking at getting an older 250f, and possibly a Kawasaki or Suzuki, then you should probably consider some of this info. When these companies made their 250f, it was more like a Kawazuki 250f, because Kawasaki and Suzuki had partnered up. So most of the parts on these bikes are interchangeable. This was their first year making the 250f, so just by that you should be a little worried. As some might expect, these bikes were not the greatest reliability-wise in 2004. Although they were fast bikes, they had an overheating problem caused by a bad/weak water-pump. Another defect these bikes had was in the valve-train that caused the valves to burn-up more quickly. These problems can get bad and scared me away from buying one of these bikes. This is not to say that these bikes do not perform. They have plenty of power, and if you really want to get one then I suggest you get a newer style complete cyclinder head and get and aftermarket water-pump and impeller to fix the overheating problem. If you do that then the bike should be fine, but by the time you spend all that money on parts you could have bought a newer bike more than likely. Good luck, and remember that no matter what you ride, have fun and stay safe! Thanks

2002 Honda CR125R

For those of you dirt bikers that would like to know a little bit about the Honda CR125, tune in to this post as I will give you a review of the bike. Although it is a 2002, not much changed since 2007 except that the motor was modified a little bit in 2005. So this should be pretty accurate to the newer models as well because Honda pretty gave up on their two-strokes once they unleashed the thumpers.

Comfort

First off, I wanted to mention the comfort level on this bike is excellent. It’s probably the tallest bike I’ve ridden, seat height-wise, but it’s also one of the most comfortable motocross bikes I’ve ridden. It’s a little bit high for shorter riders like me(5′6”), but once you get on it it’s fine.

Suspension

For being stock suspension, I thought that it was great. Although I did not ride it extremely hard, it worked out very well for me. It soaked up all the bad landings, the braking bumps did not throw me around, and in the corners it wasn’t wanting to stand up. Since I am a lighter rider I thought the stock set-up would be a little on the stiff side, but I turned the compression and rebound clickers on the forks and shock all the way in and it was fine.

Motor

Now you may have heard that the Honda two-stroke engines suck, they have no power, and they are the worst two-stroke ever. If you did not hear that, then disregard what I just said. Now, some of that is partly true. They don’t have the most powerful engine that’s for sure. But that’s not to say that they are slow. After all, it’s mainly the rider and not the bike, but we’re not here to talk about that. As for the power, yes the bottom-end is very weak. In fact, it’s so weak that it’s surprising that it even goes. Once you get it into the mid-range then it wakes up a little bit with okay power. The top-end hit isn’t the most powerful in it’s class either, but it’s nothing to be ashamed of. The motor also has the “Rattle of Death,” I have heard, and my CR had a rattle too, but you shouldn’t need to worry about that because pretty much all of them have it.

Handling

Handling on this bike is probably number one in it’s class. It can go through corners faster than you are able to! Wait, does that make sense?? Anyway, the handling is great much like the stock suspension. This is probably the biggest reason why people buy Honda’s, and I agree with them; it’s great!

Jetting

The jetting on Honda’s is one thing that scares people away. The two-strokes tend to eat up spark plugs quickly if the bike isn’t jetted for the correct temperature and altitude. I didn’t have any problems with mine because I bought it with it correctly jetted for where I ride. I am not an expert with carburetors, so I suggest bring it to a trusted mechanic and get it properly jetted. If you want to do it yourself then buy a manual for the bike if you don’t have one already and read it carefully. Don’t let the Honda jetting or rumors about it always being hungry scare you away. It’s a great bike. You just have to fix the carburetor right way.

What I Think of It…..

Overall this is a great package for new riders. It looks great, it rides great, and two-strokes are easier/cheaper on maintenance. This is a perfect bike for a new racer that doesn’t need much power and wants a good handling, stock bike. After the the jetting is fixed, you got a great bike in your hands. Make sure you maintain it, have fun, and keep those two-smokes rollin’!!
