Tammy Donahugh is a US freeride/dirtjumper who has been busting out big tricks for years, and we featured a video of her riding back when Martha Hucker first started, called Girls Rock (see it here). She’s just put together a sequel, and we caught up with her to talk about her riding.

Hey Tammy! How long have you been riding, and how did you get into it?
I’m pretty sure I’ve been riding long enough that I could be eligible to receive a lifetime achievement award ! Back when I was a rebel teenager my boyfriend and his buddies started getting into mountain biking and mtb racing, so I wanted to tag along. I got addicted to everything about it, and before I knew it riding bikes was a major part of my life.

Who do you ride with normally, and where do you ride? Any other girls that shred in your area?
I ride with my talented hubby mostly. It’s hard to find girls that want to ride dirt jumps and skate parks, so it ends up just being myself & my music a lot of the time. There are a ton of talented riders in the area, so unless there’s a competition going on, there’s generally a rider or 10 at any given DJ spot. We did have a strong girl posse for a short while here in CO, but a few of them moved out to California for the year round warmth. The OG crew is Lisa Myklak, Emily Johnston, Nadia Steinbrecher, and myself. Hopefully we can all meet up for a much needed reunion soon!

What motivates you the most to go out and push your riding to the next level?
Anytime I get to ride with my friends and see them learning and pushing their limits gets me pumped to try new things. Progression is always happening out there and it continually amazes me how deep the sea of learning is. I don’t want to end up an old maid either, so that’s some motivation!!

How do you psych yourself up to try new tricks?
I think I need to work on my psyching up methods. Being in my thirties with a career & a mortgage has possibly created some type of wussie cell in my brain.
Although any time someone in the crew nails a new trick I instantly want to try it! Once you get a few that you can throw comfortably it’s like an addiction and you want to get more tricks in your bag. I definitely had a dry spell recently where I was not learning any new specific tricks, but there is SO much more to jumping and riding than throwing a trick.

What’s your worst injury, and what do you when you can’t ride?
Last year I had a pretty bad experience by breaking both my elbows at the same time. One was pretty smashed up as well as the ligaments torn off and needed some hardware to fix it. Obviously not being able to use both of your arms for some time is somewhat traumatic, but an injury I experienced early in my racing days I would count as my worst. I crashed on a DH Nationals course and ended up putting a hole in my face with a rock. It tore off my left nostril and you could see my teeth through my cheek (imagine a pumpkin being impaled). When you cut through the nerves in your face, that area does not work for quite some time. For about 3 months it looked like I had suffered a stroke because one side of my face would not function. I don’t think it could have been fixed & healed much better than it did, but changing the look of your face definitely leaves more of a mental scar.
Somehow I’ve managed to only injure my upper extremities to date, so during my time off the bike I can usually hike, run, spin, etc., to keep me from turning into a professional slack-a-sauras!

What’s your favorite event of the year, and why?
Aside from the annual Jump Jam we host in our backyard (the raddest most awesome event ehverr! Aka the J’ammy Jam) I wouldn’t say I’ve got one favorite specific event, but definitely a type of event. The slopestyle events that offer pro & amateur classes/courses with a fun festival atmosphere are the ones I will rally to get to. It’s great when they’ve got more than just the main attraction going on too. For example – best trick comps, dual slalom races, clinics, ramps to session, etc. Out of all the events I did in 2009 I would vote the Ranch Jam “most fun”!

Tell us your raddest riding story…
It seems like I could tell a rad story for almost every road trip, race, jump jam, or fun day of DH riding with friends, but I think the raddest story is how riding a bike has made me into the person I am today. I know it sounds cheesy, but bikes have taken me to so many parts of the world I would have never seen, which in turn has created so many experiences. Experiences are what life is all about in my opinion. On top of that, I am pretty sure that I would have never turned into the confident, strong minded person that I’ve become which helps me get through day by day.

Morning!

Boot camp is going well.  Last week was multiple days of long threshold intervals.  The last one of those was yesterday and consisted of 8 minute hill repeats, five times on Trail Creek Road.   It was brutal but better than the intervals a couple days before. I already feel like my form is coming back a little and my body is being reminded of what it is supposed to do.  I did enjoy the casual schedule for the last month, but now it does feel good to get back into some work and feel my legs and lungs responding appropriately.  This week will consist of intervals again every other day, but way shorter and way harder.  After this week, it tapers down until Cotopaxi.  This has been a super compressed training peak, but I’m sure I still have residual fitness from the whole year of racing.  I also trust my coach, Matthew.  He has never steered me wrong and he’s way smarter than I am.  The weather has cooperated really well for the training schedule too.  It has been cold, but clear.  It’s the time of year where each day, I look outside and hope that I won’t have to do a workout in the rain or snow.  So far, so good!  I’ve also been able to rally a few training partners to join me on some of the workouts, so it keeps me honest.  Yesterday, the Ipod was the motivating training partner.  A friend of mine plays in a disco band called Sparkle Motion.  He made me a disco playlist and I must say, I was ripping up those hill repeats to Shake Your Booty, Disco Inferno, It’s Raining Men, etc.  You KNOW you remember those lyrics!

Pictures here are Greg and I playing on the new pump track a block from our house.  It’s so much fun and now makes me realize, I need another bike!!!  A friend of ours won this Specialized P3 in a raffle and he’s been kind enough to “store” it at our house.  We’re just making sure it gets a good workout.  The track is awesome.  I just usually have to wait for all the kids to go home for dinner before I drop in, so I don’t embarrass myself.

So jetzt kommt ein wenig verspätet endlich unser Erlebnisbericht von letztem Wochenende! Aber besser spät als nie!

Wie der Michi im letzten Beitrag schon erwähnt hat waren wir am Freitag in Schorndorf und haben für den Laden “Bikes n Boards” auf dem Schorndorfer Marktplatz gerockt während neben uns die Jungs mit ihren Bikes sich über die Hügel katapultiert haben. Da blieb einem teilweise schon der Mund offen stehn! Mit dem Wetter hatten wir auch Glück, da die Bühnenüberadachung ein wenig undicht war mussten wir unser Schlagzeug in eine Folie einpacken. Pünkltlich zum Gig aber hat es wieder aufgehört zu regnen und wir haben losgelegt. Es waren jede Menge leute da und wir hatten mega Spaß! Obwohl Chris an dem Tag Geburtstag hatte, konnten wir nicht lange feiern weil es am nächsten Tag schon wieder um 9 Uhr “Abfahrt” hieß.  Diesmal in Richtung Westerwald auf das MACH1 Festival. Dort angekommen wurden wir erstmal etwas erschöpft begrüßt, weil die Jungs von der Bloodhoundgang noch bis 5 Uhr morgens gefeiert und das MACH1 Team wohl ordentlich auf Trab gehalten haben.

Aber nach einer kleinen Stärkung im Catering Bereich gings dann auch schon los mit Aufbauen, Soundcheck, warten bis Freddy Furber fertig ist und dann BAAAAM Rock n Roll Explosion!:D wir waren auf jeden Fall mega motiviert, vor allem weil die Bühne auch so riesig war! Das hat mega Fun gemacht! Leider konnten wir das Publikum um die Uhrzeit noch nicht so richtig motivieren und so saßen die meißten noch auf den Boden während sie uns zugeschaut haben. Vielleicht lag es auch daran das wir ein wenig herausgestochen sind auf dem von Hardcore Bands dominierten Festival aber es gab dann doch noch ein paar Leute die sich bis nach ganz vorne gewagt und mit uns gefeiert haben! Vielen Dank!

Der Ausblick beim Aufbauen:

Den restlichen Tag haben wir dann damit verbracht uns den Magen immer und immer wieder mit einem “fucking Schnitzel” vollzuschlagen und die anderen Bands anzuschauen!

Besonders gefallen haben uns “Kenai” die Jungs von der Insel waren nicht nur auf sondern auch hinter der Bühne super drauf und haben für ihr alter ein ordentliches Brett rausgehauen! Als letzte Band haben dann noch Millencollin gespielt, sozusagen unsere Helden der Jugend als wir noch kleine Skaterboys waren;) Danach gings dann gemütlich mit Anhänger und Tempo 99 nach Hause.

Hello Zusammen!

Heute war unser alter Kumpel Michi zu Besuch im Poberaum und durfte die Jerksblog-News verkünden!!!

Wir freuen uns schon wie Sau aufs Wochenende wir spielen schließlich am Freitag in Schorndorf auf dem Dirt Jump Contest von Bikes’n'Boards direkt auf dem Marktplatz um 21:00 Uhr..

Am Samstag gehts dann ab nach Montabaur aufs Mach1 Festival..Dort spielen wir um 16:00 Uhr!

Es wird für uns ein hammer Wochenende und wir freuen uns euch alle zu sehen!!

Este fim-de-semana passado realizou-se a primeira etapa do campeonato nacional de Dirt-Jumping, com 50 riders a alinharem, penso que foi o máximo que já vi em Portugal!

A vitória foi para o Sandro Silva, campeão nacional em titulo, com o resto do top 5 ocupado por riders “normais” nestas posições, entre eles Ruy Silva e Pedro”Gralha”Dias.
