Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, most known for his role as David in the HBO drama Six Feet Under. Michael C Hall plays Dexter Morgan, a blood spatter specialist working in Miami for the police.

A lot has changed for Dexter this season. He’s married with a new house and he’s got a new baby in the world. It’s taking a toll on our favorite serial killer. He’s messing up at his job because of his lack of sleep.

Season 4 is pretty incredible. Dexter just keeps getting better. It’s been a while since I wrote this and I just didn’t have time to post these, so I decided to do so this week. Here you go!

Warning: Spoilers ahead and strong language.

* * * * *

LaGuerta tells the brass about her relationship with Angel. This won’t be pretty. Deb was shot in the last episode. She’s still alive, but Lundy was killed. Trinity outplayed Lundy easily, because he wasn’t astute enough.

* * * * *

Dexter arrives on scene. Some idiot uniform tries to stop him from seeing Deb. Deb is still alive. Lundy is dead. The MO smells like the Vacation Murderer. LaGuerta and Angel send him to the hospital. Lundy was shot twice. Deb was left alive. It sounds like the MO.

Christine arrives to see Quinn. Dex checks Lundy’s hotel room. He made his life to search for Trinity. Dex takes his evidence.

Rita answers Dex’s phone and learns that Dex still has his apartment. Deb wakes up. She didn’t need surgery, just a couple of stitches. Anton arrives, as well as Rita. Rita tells him about the pipe bursting at his apartment. Rita wants to talk about it later. Deb tells Anton that she slept with Lundy. She wants to break up with him.

LaGuerta told the brass that she made disclosure about their relationship. The Deputy Chief is waiting and hovering around. Baptista planted a story about Johnny Rhodes in the papers, using Christine. It may pit Nikki against Johnny.

Dex is at his place. It’s no more his sanctuary. He needs it for his Dark Passenger. Deb calls him. She needs him to pick her up. She also needs a place to stay. Dex is starting to listen to Lundy’s tapes. Dex figures out that Lundy was killed by Trinity because he go too close. Lundy couldn’t put together the pieces.

Trinity is shopping for hammers. Dex is staking out Trinity’s next murder place. He realizes that he doesn’t have all of Lundy’s tapes. The last one must be in his recorder, which is locked into evidence.

Quinn is giving Christine some head. They start their relationship back up. Deb stays at Dex’s place. She senses some tension between Dex and Rita. Dex manages to stall her.

Angel and LaGuerta have made up. Dex manages to swipe the tape easily enough. Trinity gets the skinny on the office building. He gets a tour and a lot of info on how to get in.

Rita asks Deb if she knew about Dex’s apartment. Deb is punishing herself by not taking her pain pills. Dex listens to the tape. Lundy ID his encounter with Trinity. There is a shooting at a motel. It’s Johnny Rhodes. Matsuka works the scene. He was shot 3 times. Nikki is cornered behind a liquor store. Quinn tasers her.

Quinn phones Deb that they got Nikki and Rhodes. Deputy Chief Matthews wants a word with LaGuerta. Matthews says that Angel will have to be transferred out of homicide. He will get a promotion included in the transfer.

Deb talks with Dex. She’s freaking out. She tells him that she is broken. He replies that he is. He comes to his apartment and finds Rita waiting for him. She went through his stuff and didn’t find anything. He opens his trunk and there is a gun in there. He says that he wasn’t comfortable bringing it home. Rita says that she is seeing how good he is at lying. He should sleep here tonight. When he comes home, they’ll have a lot of work in order to make their marriage work.

Dex arrives at the building. He’s too late. Trinity is already killing the sandwich guy by bludgeoning him to death. The security guard is fine. Dex goes to the security desk and sees Trinity doing his dirty work. He follows him in his van. He leaves the city. He goes to a home in the suburbs. He’s got a wife and a family.

All'età di 6 anni.

http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica?query=omeopatia&view=archivio

Pseudoscienza?

Truffa?

Fantamedicina?

Medicina voodoo?

o semplicemente incommensurabile stronzata baggianata?

http://www.brainmindlife.org/benveniste.htm

No.

When I was much younger, most if not all of the product labels read “Made in America”. Not so today. We have labels from all over the globe. Embarrassingly, on some items I don’t even recognize the country on its label. Countries such as Liechtenstein and the Grenadines.

My family likes to visit various dollar stores. Last month I searched a dollar store in hopes of finding a product or two with “Made in America” on its label. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.

That’s okay. I still bought a few dollar items, but that got me thinking. What does my “label” read and how about your “label”? Made in America? Made in Africa? Made in Asia? Where?

If you really think about it, we weren’t made in America, Africa, Asia or elsewhere. We were made by God with heavenly hands and placed here on earth. The Bible says in Genesis 1…..”He created us in His image.” That’s our “label”.

I have heard and read that some claim to be self made. Sort of a Clint Eastwood attitude. You almost can hear Dirty Harry in his own words saying that he got up early, pulled up his boots, dusted off his hat, worked the land, did things his way on his terms, no need for help, don’t depend on anyone, just “git r done”.

Honestly, that couldn’t be farther from the truth for my “label”. My “label” has many people’s influence, impartation, teaching and guiding, opportunities, smiles and words of encouragement, times and places where they chased me down and were instrumental in turning me back on the right track, loved me, graced me, mercied me, and – well you get the picture.

I am not self made. Very far from it. If I had a “label”, it would read: Made by God. Developed and improved by many others from around the globe.

What does your “label” read?

Την ίδια δεκαετία με τον “Τhe Night that panicked America” το Hollywood πλάσαρε τον Dirty Harry, το σκληρο αστυνομικό του εκφυλισμένου και παραδομένου σε κάθε λογής έγκλημα Σαν Φραντζίσκο.

Catching up on the long overdue tale of a summer trip… To review: Picture it. San Francisco. A

Catching up on the long overdue tale of a summer trip… To review: Picture it. San Francisco. August 2009. A hotel. A business meeting. Name tags. Number 2 pencils. And newcomers exploring the city in the down time.

During the weekend, Matt and Tom had been wandering the streets of San Francisco while I working at the meeting in the afternoon. One of the neighborhoods they passed through was Japantown. We had hopped a crowded bus out there one afternoon so they could return to the annual street festival spread along the main road. “Street festival” usually meaning local, canopied merchants selling pop art t-shirts and pottery and beaded things, food vendors selling messy barbecue on Styrofoam plates, and a cover band. Fairly standard things, although the band outlasted the dismantling of the vending tables and we took seats near the stage to watch the cover band in amusement. The cover band that featured one male and one female singer played through a string of disco and new wave hits that compelled most of the middle age people out of their seats and into the aisles to dance. Even two ladies who must have been in their 70s didn’t seemed bothered by the boom of the stacked speakers as they stood in the corner near the stage to dance.

Being in Japantown is a lot different than Chinatown. The distinctions may well be a microcosm of the real differences between Japan and China. Japantown, like the larger Pacific Heights neighborhood where it sits, is pure, pristine urban-suburbia; a small section of the city with clean streets and perfectly trimmed hedges. There’s a mix of gyms and condos and cafes and Japanese cultural institutions and symbolism (a 5-towered Peace Pagoda, for example, marks the neighborhood’s center as a memorial to victims of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). It is white collared. And it’s also rather unique – Japantown San Francisco is only one of two official Japantowns in the country.

On the other hand, Chinatown in San Francisco is the oldest Chinatown in the country, and it’s age is very apparent. It’s very blue-collar, like what you seen in Big Trouble in Little China (which was filmed in San Francisco’s Chinatown). The streets are grimy and crowded with tourists browsing cheap souvenirs. Walking around late at night, we saw frazzled old women dragging out huge garbage bins from the stores, passed by dark gated doors to clubs or loud people speaking Chinese behind them, and even saw drunks pissing in the street. In the afternoon, clothes were strung out from apartments above the stores and it looked like old photos of tenement housing. Though I’m not pointing this out to criticize Chinatown, but merely point out what a contrast it is to Japantown.

We’d taken a less crowded bus over the North Beach neighborhood for dinner, which is just beyond Chinatown, its own boundary being an intersection lined with buildings covered with 60’s-era illustration that made the strip joints advertised within them seem rather comical. (Many of the clubs were used in Dirty Harry). While sandwiched between Chinatown and Fisherman’s Wharf, North Beach actually was at one time a beach. The main drag along the North Beach neighborhood is something of a Little Italy, except that the strip is almost entirely filled with nothing but restaurants. The busy street and the elegant towers of a Catholic Church nearby create a facade to an otherwise indistinct section, which may say a lot about more than San Francisco, with commercial sections being a neighborhood’s defining characteristic.

By this point everyone was exhausted and we slowly made our way through the weekend crowds and aromatic sirens. Tom had heard about a place called Pasta Pomodoro, mentioning that it was a chain, but a relatively affordable place that got rave reviews in one of the travel blogs he’d come across. Perhaps evident of how busy the resturants get on the main streets of North Beach during the summer weekends, the waitress politely cautioned us that they were nearly out of everything on the menu. Even beer. Tom had enjoyed the bread so much that, before the main course was served, she offered to bring more, but then remembered that they too were out of that now. I’d never been in a resturant where they had run out of food before. Like the Cinecita, a pizza place two doors down where Phil and I had lunch one afternoon (he would arrive in town later in the week), there was a common decoration scheme: posters and photographs from Italian movies. And, thankfully, not from the limited repertoire of gangster films like the pizza place has back home, but actual Italian cinema, and especially (what I presume is) the nation’s most iconic film, La Dolce Vita.

“Dirty Harry”

October 25th, 2009

When “Dirty Harry” begins, the problems start before the episode even does. After the exciting finale to “Dex Takes a Holiday,” which was a strong episode which really connected with the qualities that make the show work and which ended on that cliffhanger of Deb and Lundy bleeding on the pavement, things seemed exciting in a way that the show was struggling with early on.

However, the lengthy “Previously on Dexter” sequence reminded us that the things that made that episode great were an exclusion (of Rita and the kids) and a shock (that won’t be recreated in the next episode), which means that “Dirty Harry” is immediately handicapped. And while there are some stories that seem legitimately compelling, those seem to be at a standstill while the “drama” comes from conflicts that are either entirely uninteresting or which feel like the sort of simple “Dexter meets Suburbia” type stories the show has been dealing with this season.

It proves once and for all that Dexter is a series best watched in extended bursts on DVD, because the hype is going to create expectations that this season isn’t able to live up to.

I want to make clear that Jennifer Carpenter does some amazing work in this episode as she rushes her way through an emotional breakdown following Frank Lundy’s death at the hands of an unknown individual. If this were a show that wanted to move at a slower pace, then Deb’s breakup with Anton would have been a single episode, and her breakdown at the site of the shooting would have been saved for a later episode. But there was something to be said in the sheer speed at which Deb broke down, refusing her pain meds and recovering physically while her emotional state fails in turn. Carpenter has been through similar arcs before, but her breakdown at the parking lot was powerful enough for me to look past the similarity to past storylines and acknowledge her pain.

However, that’s the only real note that really did much for me in this one. I actually felt that this week’s twist, that Trinity has a family of his own and lives in the suburbs, was the kind of plotting that I despise on this show. The idea that he and Dexter are “OMG TOTALLY THE SAME” is convenient to the point of contrivance, driving home just how much this season (not unlike last season) feels choreographed rather than unfolding in any sort of natural fashion. Michael C. Hall remains compelling, but I was kind of just looking forward to seeing Dexter try to get inside the head of a different serial killer, as opposed to realizing that the head he was getting inside was really his own. It’s one of those storylines that probably sounds really great on paper, but in practice it seems blindly philosophical in a way that does nothing for me no matter how well Michael C. Hall can sell it.

The episode also suffers through the overuse of Harry’s ghost, a tool that was intriguing when it made sense but that now seems kind of creepy. It’s one thing to have Dexter’s Dark Defender take physical form, and it’s one thing for Harry’s code to become part of his self-conscience to the point of visual representation. However, the ghost is neither a direct extension of the Dark Defender or a pure defender of the code, being used however an individual scene requires. It’s basically a constant foil so that the show isn’t just Michael C. Hall talking to himself, but the solution to that potential problem is relying less on expository dialogue, not just dividing it between two characters. Harry’s ghost might have proven a convenient excuse for Dexter keeping his apartment, but his value to the current storyline is not nearly as clear. I like James Remar, but the device already seems tired.

We’ve known ever since we found out Dexter kept the apartment that Rita would eventually find out, but I thought the episode did nothing with it. It was the kind of thing where it’s just played as a distraction from Dexter’s real work, and the episode’s efforts to connect it with Deb’s emotional moment was forced at best. I think Rita’s naivete about Dexter is starting to wear thin, which makes sense when we think about it logically, but dramatically I don’t think it improves the show in any way. In fact, Rita’s paranoia is actually by design a hindrance to the parts of the show that “Dex Takes a Holiday” represents, which actually makes it even more frustrating for us as viewers. The game of cat and mouse between two serial killers is hindered when there’s other games of cat and mouse which we know are far less important and yet which by design need to FEEL more important to create barriers for the interesting stuff.

The beginning of this episode implies that there will be chaos, but then the episode throws that all away: by having Lundy’s death quickly become a vacation murder in the eyes of the police, and then by having the Vacation murderer conveniently die, all of that chaos is gone by the time the hour ends. The chaos seems like it could have brought out some interesting shades in even the dullest of supporting storylines, but only Deb really felt the tension involved, and everyone else’s problems (like Batista’s imminent transfer, or Quinn’s sex with the reporter) were just as boring as they were before. They both felt like storylines out of an episode of 24, storylines that seem like pointless diversions that are only there to remind us that these people are human beings. However, what would have made them seem human is if they had been part of the chaos as opposed to cleaning it up so the season can keep cycling between cliffhangers.

“Dex Takes a Holiday” was about more than a cliffhanger, and the ending didn’t hurt; “Dirty Harry,” meanwhile, is a weak episode of the show to begin with, not only due to these problems but also because it was only repeating what we’ve seen before. Dexter didn’t discover anything new in Lundy’s notes that we didn’t already know, so we were sitting around waiting for him to discover what we already knew. The buzz about the final moment might be relevant, but all it does is reinforce story elements that to be honest I’ve felt have been overly present already this season, which makes me less than excited about what’s to come.

Cultural Observations

I’m curious to know if the scene of Trinity buying a hammer for the bludgeoning was, in fact, an intended homage to the opening scene of The Wire’s fourth season, an absolutely amazing sequence wherein Snoop purchases a powder-actuated nail gun. Just the other day my parents were researching tools and came on the term powder-actuated, and I was transported back to that hardware store. The comparison really took me out of the scene, which was probably creepier for those who didn’t see how much more subtle (and thus, more creepy) the Wire scene was in the end.

The Batista/LaGuerta stuff is reaching a breaking point for me. It has officially become a 24 storyline, especially with the edict that he needs the transfer order by Monday – in the world of 24, that would mean that it wouldn’t actually be dealt with during this season, but at least in this case something will have to happen with it (albeit with a 99% chance of being uninteresting).

Quinn’s reporter girlfriend is literally only there for her boobs, so forgive me if I don’t offer indepth analysis of her orgasm.

S04E06 “If I Had a Hammer”

S04E09 “Hungry Man”

“. . . you’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do

“. . . you’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’ Well, do ya, punk?”

—“Dirty” Harry Callahan

That quote is from my all time favorite movie — Dirty Harry. In that famous scene Det. Harry Callahan has just thwarted an armed robbery and stands posed over the wounded perpetrator wielding a six-shot .44 Magnum revolver. The prone robber stares up in fear, sizing up whether to make a last desperate grab for his shotgun lying beside him. Right then Callahan says: “I know what you’re thinking. Did he fire six shots or only five?” The subtext is: if there is one bullet left in Callahan’s gun he will use it to blow the robber’s head “clean off.” That’s when he asks the crook whether he’s feeling lucky enough to take the risk. The man decides he isn’t that lucky and surrenders.

Psychologist and luck researcher Richard Weismen might point to this as an example of why luck has nothing to do with superstition. In Weismen’s view, “luck” is more about paying attention to what’s going on around you. In the Dirty Harry scenario, a “lucky” person would count the number of shots fired, then seize the chance to get away. Not that anybody with good luck would need to rob a bank in the first place.

Weisman has spent more than a decade exploring the basis of luck. He’s convinced that skill and attitude are the only two things that separate the lucky from the unlucky. In his book, The Luck Factor, after interviewing thousands of self-identified “lucky” people and doing numerous experiments, Weismen was able to identify four basic features or traits that all fortunate people share:

1) They look for and exploit opportunity

2) They trust their own hunches

3) They expect good fortune

4) They have resilient attitudes that transform bad luck into good

By contrast, the self-described “unlucky” subjects in Weisman’s study viewed themselves as unfortunate and many reported suffering from anxiety. According to Weisman, their anxiety diminished their capacity to recognize unexpected circumstances: their bad luck consisted in missing out on opportunities because they were too focused on looking for something else.

These “unlucky” people go to parties intent on finding the perfect partner and bypass the chance to make form new friendships. Or they scan the newspapers intent on finding a tailor-made job advertisement and ignore or overlook other types of employment for which they may actually be well suited.

But the good news that emerges from Weisman’s research is that luck in not inherent. It’s a both a skill that can be learned and an attitude that can be cultivated. And lucky you, it’s a technique that’s well within your reach.

Set the stage for luck to enter your life by trusting your instincts (they’re usually right), being open to new experiences and looking for ways to break out of established routines. Plus, if you visualize good things coming your way, you’re more likely to notice them when they do.

Perhaps the place to start is to ask yourself one question . . . “Do I feel lucky?”

Well do you?
