I don’t really listen to that much american hip-hop/rap anymore. The big names all release far too much inconsistent material and are far to eager to please a mainstream audience. Trends, musical or lyrical, dominate the scene, and make most artist sound alike. Smaller, younger hungrier talents look up to the big dogs, and do little more than copy their idols. Where the undergrounds gone i don’t even know, lost in left-field experimentation, stuck in crossword type lyrical exercises or loosing all political and intellectual credibility by talking about the threat of illuminati and melting lizards in the center of the earth. At times there is promise, when the dirty south had its breakthrough a couple years ago there was some sparkingly fresh music released, but the market soon ate that scene up and turned it into T-Pain and Flo-Rida. I’m not saying i have looked hard enough, i can probably find some white boys who make interesting electronica they rap over, or some trappers who don’t have enough money to sell out. But I’m not really sure it’s worth the effort. With the exception of the twisted genius of Rza there is really only one rap artist left that i keep coming back to, that i always have in safe distance so i can reach out and at any time play it at ridiculous volumes.

Killer Mike is Hip Hop. Son of a dope lady, built like a brick, raised in the streets of Atlanta with the hustlers and the junkies. He could have been any Gucci Mane or Young jeezy. But he is also savvy, perceptive,  political, outspoken. He don’t care about a Kanye but Cornell West. He is Niggaz With Attitude, he is Krs-One and Ice Cube. He is the embodiment of the dichotomy  that is Hip-Hop, street-raised and angry but intelligent and fueled by the fire of injustice. No one else right now have the just fury of Killer Mike, no one have his lyrics, no one have his ferocious flow, now one has the intelligence, now one else has the balls.  As proven many times but perhaps most easily with this:

“They say I dissed Oprah, I’m like “so what?”
I never get to jump up and down on a sofa
Now watch me as I Cruise like Tom through the slums
Where the education’s poor and the children growing dumb
In the section of the city where Sir Diddys don’t come
Where Mr. Cosby and Mrs. Winfrey won’t come
Unless it’s a hurricane, then FEMA don’t come

He also has great love for his city, for the people and surroundings he grew up with. Which is probably why he chose to take the risk of releasing this cd. These cd’s are generally never a good idea, especially not making it a double, and i’m guessing a part of Killer Mike knows it. Atlanta isn’t full of Killer Mikes, few cities has a underground scene that can entertain for a two whole cd’s. perhaps this should be seen more as a favor to rappers who would never otherwise see this kind of exposure. Across the ocean at least i am listening to it.

Unfortunately though, there aren’t really that many rappers on these two cd’s that makes you want to listen to their tunes more than once. The beats are rarely more than the usual sound of dirty south, and unless they stand out by being unusually bad you don’t really notice them. Most of the lyrics are, put mildly, extremely cliché. There are perhaps a few tracks that stand out, Trillville comes with quite interesting and hype screaming flows on  “I Be Off”. B.O.B stand out with his “Generation Lost” which kinda sounds like old ATCQ, or Skee-Loo’s classic “I wish” even. Goodie Mob’s Khujo is ok on “Comin true”, but that should come as no suprise, and  Pastor Troy flows ok on the horrible synth guitar production of “I want war”.

But that doesnt really matter. Killer Mike is featured on a third of the tracks, and every time he touches the mic the mediocre turns to stupendous. This release is worth the price for those verses alone. But if you haven’t already gotten “I pledge allegiance to the grind” 1 and 2 i suggest you do that first.

Hello there,

this week we played a couple of gigs. The first was in Spitalfields at a place called The Luxe. Twas an adventure in itself just getting to the gig! We were picked up from Camberwell by our friend Dave Ashby from Rum Shebeen (great band) after a quick rehearsal at Mahood’s flat. Then we drove to Dave’s to pick up a guitar amp, then onwards to Penge to collect a bass amp for Alfie. The van kept pulling over to the left but we thought nothing of it until we arrived in Penge, only to be told by a local man in beige and graduated tint glasses that we had a catastrophic puncture. So once more into the breach, we all piled into Dave’s Mum’s Fiat and off we set for Spitalfields. The gig itself was okay and it was good to see a few familiar faces, thanks guys!

The next day was much more straightforward. We were playing with Babyshambles at the Dirty South in Lewisham. It was an excellent gig, we played well and I managed to give away all of the Gaoler’s Daughter Badges I’d taken with me. If you want one yourself, get yourself to a gig and pester us! Had to un-invite people though as the gig was completely sold out the day before, so sorry if you didn’t get in. The guys in Babyshambles played a blinder, as did The Thirst, who we’ve always thought were excellent. Afterwards I had to drive back to Brighton for Uni the next day with my Sister, and so felt it only fair to buy chicken from my favourite chicken shop; Amir’s Fried Chicken in New Cross (once i only had 75p, i was drunk and tired and hungry and gave him the ‘I need chicken’ eyes, and he gave me chips and 5 hot wings! This is one of my best chicken based anecdotes)

Anyways, E.P is only a couple of weeks away from release so that’s very exciting. The second E.P is in the pipeline, having already been recorded, and yesterday sent away for mastering. So it’s all moving along nicely!

My my Monday morning…Spent yesterday hungover like a horse. We had yet another awesome show @ The Dirty South, thanks to Joe and all the bar staff for a great night hiding from the storm. I then went to a party underneath some arches near London Bridge via going to Old Street, to then find out the party was actually from where I originally was at London Bridge. Great!

While Yung Breeze’s lyrics and the vehemence of his delivery are part in parcel of who he has become, his aura and essence are more of a product and statement of that which he has personally witnessed within his community and the back alleys of Sharpstown, as well as the peril he’s bourne on his shoulders rather than a radical call for violence, rebellion, and disobedience. When he cries out for justice and equality, his words ring with crystal clarity as those of an individual whose lived the life against which he protests with endurance, contempt, and integrity, and simultaneously maintains the roots of who he’s developed into as a man of pride and consequence.

If you wish to know how the other side of the tracks has lived and survived without personally endangering yourself and your future, take a quick listen to the furious tales of the dark side as portrayed on the microphone and in the studio by the genuine article, Houston’s Yung Breeze.

In spite of the anger and resentment one might expect from such an individual, Yung Breeze has developed into a rather charitable individual, donating his time and talent to Joe Stern-McGovern and Universal Artists, International’s struggle against the spread of HIV and the devastating consequences of AIDS.

Look for future production of Yung Breeze through the likes of Shaka Productions, as well at  H-Town’s legendary recording hot spot, In the Jar Studios, run by the studios owner and operator, Al Loya, techincal afficianado and savvy engineer to some of hip hop’s fastest rising legends.

“When I first met Yung Breeze, he was a struggling youth who had a great sense of pride, an enormous gift of expression, and a knack for conveying his particular genius through the local street venacular of the areas hoods and ruffians. Originally recording at one of the illest and most infamous studios in the shadier side of town, Psyche Ward, Yung Breeze was picked up and developed by the genius of the wonder twins, Boss and Ripp.” Collectively, these forces of the city’s darker and far more dangerous neighborhood known as Southwest Houston, Soufwest to the locals, have come to the forefront in recent days.”

Joe Stern-McGovern can personally vouch for the validity of the young anti-hero as through his entrancing telling of the first photo shoot the act was to experience as the entity which would come to be known as the Soufwest Brigade, or simply, The Brigade, led by street veteran and surprising genius given his circumstances, DTA, “Don’t Trust Anyone”, a meeting in which the photographer was so terrified, he insisted the photo shoot take place in broad daylight in a local downtown Houston city park.

True to his name, DTA came to generally distrust those who held the strings to his future as well as his cohorts, and the split was made as DTA went MIA and Yung Breeze continued the journey on the road to stardom solo. For those dedicated and loyal fans of DTA, fear not, he is yet in his prime and will surely rise back to the surface given the timing, motive, and opportunity, as his tales are of equal importance to those of any and must be expressed through the venue known widely as hip hop.

Currently holed up in Al’s “In the Jar Studios”, Yung Breeze is deliberating the path of his next turn towards truth and the betterment of society and the world around him through analysis of the streets and the general feeling of the times.

“Youths such as Yung Breeze sadden me in a way,” states Joe Stern-McGovern. “He’s just about the age my son would’ve been had he lived, and upon reflection it fills me with a sense that somehow I, as a part of society,  have failed our younger generations, leaving them to inherit a world abandoned to greed and the mismanagement of our leaders and botched policies of the government, an entity whose best intentions are questionable.” Those who have chosen such selfish ends will now come to face the fury and ambitions towards societal justice and self-correction from the likes of DTA, Yung Breeze, two halves of the Brigade.
