Bottin comes across as that disco man with an electric jazz flavour. His sound is real effin smooth! Guglielm Bottin is a producer, dj and sound designer based in Venice, Italy. 2009 is looking to be a no easy year as he’s releasing a 14-track album titled Horror Disco (Bear Funk UK) as well as two 12″ singles. Horror Disco is out this month! so keep an ear out and a watchful eye for it’s release here.  Bottin’s sound is real unique. It’s self-described as, “an impredictable journey into space disco, italo rarities, & deep funk. A reckless blend of retro-futuristic sounds and contemporary electronica that always sets the dancefloor on fire.” And well, that just about sums it up.

Biografie:

Aşa cum statisticile stau mărturie, ABBA este formaţia provenită din afara spaţiului anglo-american cu cel mai mare succes pe plan mondial în întreaga istorie a muzicii pop. Melodii simple şi captivante, orchestrate cu pricepere şi  bun gust, armonii vocale perfecte şi două soliste pline de farmec. Cam acestea ar fi argumentele primordiale care au stat la baza popularităţii imense de care s-au bucurat cei patru suedezi. Popularitatea lor nu a durat doar pe perioada existenţei grupului, ci s-a prelungit pe parcursul celor mai mult de două decenii care s-au scurs de la desfiinţarea sa.  ABBA a reuşit să cucerească toate pieţele muzicale importante din Europa, inclusiv pe cea britanică, de obicei foarte reticentă la orice vine din afară. Nu şi cu ABBA, care a realizat o serie de numai puţin de 17 hit-uri de Top 5 între 1974 şi 1982, dintre care nouă au fost no. 1. La acestea se mai adaugă şi nouă albume clasate deasemenea pe prima poziţie. În Statele Unite situaţia diferă în bună măsură, cu doar patru intrări în Top 10, între care un singur no. 1 (“Dancing Queen”, în ‘76), însă şi aceasta este o performanţă rar întâlnită în cazul artiştilor proveniţi din Europa continentală.

Istoria ABBA îşi are originile în 1966, când Benny Anderson (keyboardist în grupul beat Hep Stars) şi Björn Ulvaeus (chitarist şi vocalist în grupul folk-rock Hootenanny Singers), devin cuplul de compozitori ai companiei Polar Music/Union Songs. Patronul acesteia era Stig Anderson (1931-1997), un renumit compozitor pop suedez al anilor ‘50 – ‘60, ajuns mai târziu manager al celor de la ABBA. Din 1969 Benny şi Björn au început să colaboreze cu două vocaliste, Frida (pe numele real Anni-Frid Lyngstad) şi Agnetha Fältskog. Cele două le-au devenit mai târziu partenere de viaţă (Björn şi Agnetha s-au căsătorit primii în 1971). În 1972 cei patru au realizat împreună single-ul “People Need Love”, folosind o titulatura complicată: Björn And Benny, Agnetha And Anni-Frid. Succesul obţinut în Suedia de acest single i-a determinat să continue în formula respectivă, dar la sugestia lui Stig Anderson au adoptat  denumirea ABBA, acronimul prenumelor celor patru. În ‘73 ei au fost desemnaţi să reprezinte Suedia la festivalul Eurovision cu cântecul intitulat “Ring Ring”. Acesta s-a clasat atunci doar pe locul 3, dar a devenit hit în câteva ţări europene. A urmat un albumul de debut, intitulat tot Ring Ring, bine primit în Suedia si Norvegia. În 1974 cvartetul s-a calificat din nou la Eurovision, prezentând piesa “Waterloo”. De această dată ABBA a câştigat clar concursul, iar “Waterloo” a ajuns  no. 1 în Marea Britanie şi a intrat chiar în Top 10 în Statele Unite. Mulţi au ezitat să-i ia în serios pe ABBA după acest succes, prevestind că sunt doar “one hit wonder”, dar după aproape un an şi jumătate formaţia a obţinut încă un hit major pe plan internaţional, cu single-ul “S.O.S.”. Apoi la finele lui ‘75, “Mamma Mia” a devenit cel de al doilea no. 1 britanic din cariera celor de la ABBA. Anul următor i-a consacrat definitiv pe suedezi ca star-uri mondiale, cu hit-uri ca “Fernando”, “Dancing Queen” (aşa cum spuneam unicul no. 1 american) şi “Money, Money, Money” şi cu o primă compilaţie  Greatest Hits, ce a cucerit în premieră prima treaptă a topului britanic de albume. La finele anului a apărut şi cel de al patrulea album de studio al formaţiei, Arrival, ajuns deasemenea no. 1. În perioada respectivă ABBA a asimilat elemente disco pentru a-şi putea menţine sound-ul cât mai actual, iar seria succeselor a continuat cu piese ca “Knowing Me, Knowing You” şi “The Name Of The Game”, în ‘77, sau “Take A Chance On Me” şi “Summer Night City”, în ‘78, precum şi cu încă un LP, botezat ABBA: The Album. Tot în ‘78 este prezentat în lumea întreagă documentarul “ABBA: The Movie”, iar Benny şi Frida se căsătoresc în sfârşit, relaţia lor durând după cum se ştia, de mai mulţi ani. La numai câteva luni însă, celălalt cuplu, Björn şi Agnetha, a divorţat.

Cvartetul lasă deoparte pentru moment problemele intime şi în 1979 lansează un al şaselea album, Voulez-Vous, şi o a doua compilaţie Greatest Hits, în timp ce alte cinci single-uri intrau în Top 5 din Marea Britanie: “Chiquitita”, “Does Your Mother Know”, “Angeleyes/Voulez-Vous”, “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” şi “I Have A Dream”. Şi LP-ul următor, Super Trouper, a avut un impact favorabil, aducând alte două hit-uri no. 1 în Regatul Unit, “The Winners Takes It All” şi piesa de titlu a albumului, dar a marcat totodată şi sfârşitul succesului american al trupei.

În 1981 Benny şi Frida au divorţat şi ei la rândul lor, în această situaţie destrămarea grupului fiind iminentă. La finele anului a apărut ultimul album din discografia ABBA, The Visitors, acompaniat de single-ul “One Of Us”, la rândul său ultimul hit major pentru cvartetul suedez. Determinaţi poate şi de primirea mai puţin entuziastă de care a avut parte The Visitors, cei de la ABBA şi-au anunţat oficial despărţirea la începutul lui 1983. Deşi în mai multe prilejuri au existat zvonuri legate de reunirea formaţiei, aceasta nu s-a mai înfăptuit niciodată până în prezent.

Benny şi Björn au continuat să activeze împreună în calitate de compozitori profesionişti. Cea mai importantă realizare a lor de după desfiinţarea ABBA a fost musical-ul  Chess, în 1984. Rezultat al colaborării cu celebrul libretist Tim Rice, Chess a fost reprezentat cu succes pe Brodway şi a generat hit-ul “One Night In Bangkok”, interpretat de cântăreţului şi actorului scoţian Murray Head.

Frida a înregistrat sporadic albume solo, cel mai important fiind Something’s Going On, din 1982, realizat cu Phil Collins în postura de producător. În ceea ce o priveşte pe Agnetha, aceasta a avut şi ea câteva hit-uri minore în anii ‘80, pentru ca în 2004 să realizeze un bine venit come-back cu albumul My Colouring Book, cel mai bine vândut din cariera sa solo.

În vara lui 2008 a avut loc premiera filmului “Mamma Mia”, bazat pe musical-ul cu acelaşi titlu scris cu câţiva ani mai înainte de Anderson şi Ulvaeus, având în distribuţie actori ca Meryl Streep şi Pierce Brosnan.

-There is barely any info on the dude, but his full name is Ishmael Ledesma. He’s had a great great musical history, touring with the likes of Kool and the Gang, Natalie Cole, Rick James, and more. He was a part of many disco bands in the seventies and eighties. When I first heard this song, I was addicted. It had the Anita Bell-esque disco feel to it. It took me a while to realise that it’s actually a man singing this song. Awesome. Put on your platforms!

-All I know is that they’re dutch. I guess that says enough. A.K.A. they know How To Party. They have so much knowledge that they christened their recent album with the title, The Art of Partying. The album is Italo-disco meets house. It’s alright…it’s an album that you’d definitely need more help with the first time, like maybe a few beers…shots of Jack’s…some wine perhaps? It doesn’t have the air of say, Modeselektor or Junior Boys, where you can chill out to it at home or dance to it at a house party too! It definitely has tracks that stand out but not many. Enjoy this one, my fave off the album =)

-Six piece band of Indonesian awesomeness. Seven years of playing together produced two eclectic albums, Centralismo and Ports of Lima. You can tell they are influenced very very much by the West yet there is still the Pacific feel behind their tones. Centralismo is apparently one of the TOP FIVE Asian albums worth buying (according to The Times Asia). Plus, the Rolling Stones Indonesia praised PoL as the best album in 2008. And they really really do deserve it. Their music is genius and almost impossible to put into a genre. I felt such a release listening to Sore. Finally something away from all the Stereogum and Pitchfork hyped bands. This is super fresh. Get a glass of wine.

-AAAAH yes. Another electro-pop duo from Montréal. Haven’t really heard much of their stuff…and I think Omnikrom’s alright, but their collaboration on this is pretty solid.

-Vapours is easily one of my top albums of the year. UGH, Nick Thorburn and crew have done it again. the Islands, based out of Montréal (WHAT WHAAAAAAAAAAAT!) create the catchiest indie rock with lyrics to match. I recently saw them at Théâtre Plaza and their magic on stage is no short of one feels while listening to the album. Dressed all in white, armored with silver vests and gold collars, they rocked out in style. I got there a bit late, unfortunately, and I guess they must have played my favorite song of theirs (ahem, below!) in the first fifteen minutes because I didn’t get to hear it. My heart ached a bit because of this…but I think it’s OK. This song, is defs on my top list for the year end and was my soundtrack song for New York while I was there.

What will kumabear bring to the table this time? I can’t say, but I’m sure it’ll be sweet and of course it will be live.

Yes, back when I wasn’t even five months old, this travesty of televisual variety programming was terrorising children and adults alike with its bizarre sketches, incomprehensible Wookiee dialogue and a very wooden Harrison Ford. But what else was hot at the time?

• “MacArthur Park” by Donna Summer was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with Summer’s own Live and More album topping the Billboard 200
• Ralph Bakshi’s animated version of The Lord of the Rings was tops at the box office
• Laverne & Shirley was the highest-rating TV show during the 1978-9 period

Yes, in 1978, Tolkien, dance music and spin-off TV shows dominated pop culture. The late ’70s sure were wacky! Thank God those days are over!

Divine – Native Love (Step By Step)

Finns egentligen hur mycket som helst att skriva om den här. Det omisskännliga Bobby Orlando-soundet mutade in ett eget litet hörn på dansmusikkartan i början på 80-talet och Divine var en artist som fick ta del av den kakan.

Annars går det lite på halvfart här just nu, därav att det inte är så mycket aktivitet på bloggen som jag skulle önska. Jag har en nacke som bråkar just nu så då är det lite jobbigt att sitta och skriva alltför långa stunder. Men det kommer bättre tider, det brukar det göra och då blir det mer liv här på Mayday Club igen. Under tiden så får ni stå ut med att det blir lite spridda skurar.

La Flavour – Mandolay (1980)
La Flavour began humbly in Massillon, Ohio in 1967. Twin brothers Pete and Steve Nervo (guitar and drums) joined with schoolmates Craig DeBock (guitar and sax) and Gino Milchak (bass guitar) to form the core of what would actually become several bands. Instead of following the path set by the British Invasion, the boys began playing soul tunes and early Motown, eventually getting gigs at local dances and sockhops. This early version of the band first called themselves “The Noblemen”, then “The Blues Soul”.
By the mid-1970s, the boys had progressed into one of the hottest dance bands in the area, and eventually began traveling as the show band “Ragweed”. Eventually, they came to the attention of top entertainment booking agent John Sansone from Buffalo, NY, who took over the booking for the band and decided to re-name them “Flavour”. The boys became “LaFlavour” with the release of the album “Mandolay” in 1980, which was mostly written and produced by Mark Avsec (of Donnie Iris and Wild Cherry fame). Two singles from the album made the Billboard charts, with Mandolay reaching #7. With a certified success under their belts, La Flavour was signed to MCA records, who thought it wise to separate their “show” image from their “recording” image.
MCA changed the band’s name to “Fair Warning”, and the boys and Mark Avsec recorded a second album, this time of catchy pop/rock tunes. “Fair Warning” included a sure-fire hit single written by Avsec titled “She Don’t Know Me”. However, an upcoming band from Jersey called Bon Jovi were recording their first album at this time, and the song was selected for them. This move more or less ruined the chances of the song being pushed as a single for Fair Warning, and since the success of “Mandolay” had come on the heels of the disco/dance craze, Fair Warning was not as well received, and MCA eventually shelved the album and the project.
Meanwhile, the show group LaFlavour was taking the country by storm in the big showrooms – the nightclubs and hotels across the country using live entertainment to do big business in the ’80s. Since dance music was essential to the atmosphere in these rooms, La Flavour proved to be the perfect act to insure a full house. Since they were now internationally famous for their hit Mandolay, having LaFlavour on the bill was even a bigger draw. Plus, by this time the boys had developed to perfection a novelty in their act which proved to be their crowning jewel: the comedy-oriented floor shows featuring two simple muppet-style puppets, Franklin and Nick. Además del disco hoy unos cuantos afortunados podrán verlo en directo en Madrid. Lately, I’ve been noticing a lot of the disco era influence on this Fall’s fashion trends. Some of the most popular stores like Forever21, H&M, even Urban Outfitters have created their own collection  implementing sequins and sparkles.

I love love the fashion from the disco days so I’m not complaining! It brings me back to the moment I first found a picture of my parents in parachute pants and shiny surplice jumpers. We have to make the disco-themed birthday party next yr!  =)

Sunday, I was a bit depressed.  I’m sad I am leaving in a mere three weeks (and must give up what can best be described as an alternative time-line) and returning to the “real world.”  I’m also quite wracked with guilt.  I really like my students a lot.  As for the men, not only Michele, but nearly everyone thinks I’m only leaving for the Christmas holidays and then promptly returning.  That may still be the case, but it will be very difficult to make a reality, and I’m still not sure I want to…  But at least in theory, I have a plan for the upcoming year…

So, I ate a whole bag of potato chips and two coca-colas (bless you baby jesus! and your 55 cent colas…) in one sitting, which of course added to my guilt even more, as it was a return to some past unfortunate habits.  And I then I was even more stupid, and listened to the latest Bat for Lashes over and over again.  And THEN, I sat in bed for hours watching bad gay movies thanks to surfthechannel.com.  Angela had three friends over for dinner, so I was more or less relegated to my room by their loud Italian cackles.   Oh yes, we were having a ridiculous pity party of one.  *sigh*

But then Maurizio called.

I KNOW, I should hate myself….   but in 10 minutes flat I had “showered,” shaved, dessed in my cutest shirt, and was walking well on my way to Queever.   All because a boy had called.  I know I’m just a bar friend, but it still feels good.  I certainly didn’t mind when he pulled me close at one point with that pesky ‘hand on the small of the back’ gesture.  I didn’t even mind when it dawned on me later that he did it to make the other guy in the group stop hitting on him.  I can’t help it.  It feels good to “belong” and to dance with abandon and to be surrounded by ridiculously attractive Italians.

As usual, Maurizio insisted on driving me home, and we in theory are going dancing again on Wednesday….I won’t be counting any chickens of course…

Sentiram minha falta? Bem, eu estava viajando fazendo vestibular em outra cidade e acho que nem passo. Jornalismo é concorrido, hein! Enfim… Aqui trago uma bela surpresa para vocês: A Famigerada III Compilação Mágica! Haha, saudades também? Era mucha la expectación que la llegada de Rise Against había generado entre los aficionados al punk rock en España.

La última vez que visitaron nuestro país fue en el 2003 junto a Mad Caddies, antes de sacar discos como “Siren Song of the Counter Culture” o “The Sufferer and the Witness” y, por supuesto, su recién estrenado “Appel to Reason”, el cual venían a promocionar. Es por esto que había tantas ganas entre el público español de ver a una banda que se ha convertido en referencia en el género y ha conseguido ir aumentando vertiginosamente su número de seguidores hasta llegar a las 26 millones de visitas que tienen actualmente en su Myspace.

Repartieron su estancia entre Barcelona y Madrid y en ninguno de los dos escenarios defraudaron a nadie, incluyendo en su repertorio mezcla de canciones antiguas y nuevas, pero sobre todo, plasmando la fuerza que les caracteriza. Bastante significativo sobre el interés que generaron cuando anunciaron la inclusión de España en su gira europea es el hecho de que en Mayo se agotaran las entradas para el concierto en Madrid, programado para el 14 de Noviembre. Un día antes visitaban Barcelona y hasta allí nos fuimos para tener incluso la oportunidad de mantener una breve conversación con el cantante y guitarrista Tim McIlrath, en la que nos transmitió la preocupación por cuestiones sociales y medioambientales que recogen sus letras así como la convicción del “saludable” estilo de vida que les caracteriza alejados del alcohol y las drogas y con un fuerte compromiso con la sostenibilidad y el respeto a los animales.

Sin duda un buen ejemplo para todos aquellos jóvenes aficionados a este estilo musical y un contrapunto para todos aquellos prejuicios que rodean al punk rock.
Es gratificante encontrar tantas características positivas en las cotas más altas de calidad musical dentro del género. En definitiva, un buen sabor de boca a la espera de su próxima visita.

Un joven aficionado al rock español como soy yo va ha hacer un pequeño hincapié en el nuevo disco de los BARRICADA “La tierra esta sorda ” desde mi punto de vista es uno de los mejores y mas polémicos discos de los pamplonicas ya que tratan sobre un tema muy duro en la historia de nuestro país: la guerra civil española y del sufrimiento de sus familias. Desde mi punto de vista es un disco bastante bueno (el mejor de Barricada en unos 10 años) bastante disfrutable y que tiene 18 canciones.

Destacaría canciones como Por la libertad, Pétalos, 22 de Mayo, Casas Viejas, Sotanas, etc. todos ellos muy buenos temas de un nivel parecido.

El disco salió el día 3 de noviembre, lunes.
