I received 30STM’s third album for Christmas. I cannot get enough of it. In a previous post I raved about the two new singles ‘This is War’ and ‘Kings and Queens.’ While those two songs are really good, the later half of the album is much stronger and closer to 30 Seconds to Mars roots (think debut album). For a three-man band, 30STM is pretty damn talented.

‘This is War’ is definitely a concept album, going back to their first CD. Jared Leto has created another universe, another alternate dimension on ‘This is War’ focusing heavily on some sort of revolution. There’s a lot of imagery of violence and fighting, hunting, a rebirth and a new beginning. The single that matches the album title captures this revolutionary theme Leto sings of. What’s cool is that ‘This is War’ blends into the song ‘100 Suns’ which is similar to their acoustic-like tracks from ‘A Beautiful Lie.’

I like the mash-up, diverse feel of the album. There’s a heavy use of synthesizers and screaming, again harkening back to their debut album. Then there is the introduction of string instruments, piano and a singing choir. While the choir has an interesting effect on some songs, it’s overused. Backing up Jared’s vocals, fine. Opening a song, fine. But there are some parts where the choir just sings “oh” pointlessly, and it detracts from the track rather than adds to it.

The song ‘Alibi’ was actually quite surprising. It can be said that it is one of the softer songs on the new album. It is completely different from any song they’ve ever written before. The use of piano is lovely and I really like how all the other instruments are slowly introduced into the song. There’s this wonderful swelling of music and vocals. I find it epic. What’s great about this track is that it picks up yet still retains its wistful and sad tone.

Leto’s vocals are pretty much the same, which is good. He’s got a more mainstream sound. The lyrics have evolved. There is more of a personal, human and shared connection to them. “I’m no Jesus, neither are you my friend,” Leto sings on ‘Search and Destroy.’ Pain, love, inspiration, camraderie–a wide range of experiences are covered.

Besides the singles, I think the strongest tracks are ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Stranger in a Strange Land.’ “Stranger’ harkens back to the debut album–it can almost be a part two to the song Echelon. It contains that otherworldy sound they first debuted with.

I just really like this band, and I like the direction they’ve gone in. For me, it’s refreshing to hear 30STM’s progressive music. I think Jared and his team always bring something unique to the table, which is why they have such a fresh, distinct sound. They really deserve more air time and popularity. For this band, it’s not just about the fame. It’s about the art of music and culture blended together, about creativity and artistic expression, while also providing entertainment. It’s appreciated–why else is there the Mars Army?

Overall, I think 30STM did really well with this album. The experimentation has served them well, and I hope their fanbase keeps growing. Prohevito in Altum.

Defenders of the Faith (1984)

For six years, Judas Priest release a new album annually, managing to change things just enough to mostly be interesting and successful enough.  After the overall excellence of Screaming For Vengeance, the band had a good bit to live up to with Defenders of the Faith, an album that landed the band in hot water with “Eat Me Alive” appearing on the infamous Filthy Fifteen list.  Regardless, the album was out to be listened to and now evaluated.  On a positive note, this release proved to be a very competent one, showcasing a sound familiar and fresh to the band.  Other than the relatively worthless closing tracks, there really aren’t any “weak” songs to be found here.  However, after a few listens the tracks begin to feel less remarkable and this becomes a seeming superb album that shows its cracks after a couple revisits.  Overall, this is a solid effort that has some very memorable moments such as “Freewheel Burning,” “The Sentinel” and “Some Heads Are Gonna Roll.”

Turbo (1986)

With the then-recent craze over hair/glam metal, established and renowned bands were often pressured into giving their own take of such a style.  It was at this time that Judas Priest got the concept for the Twin Turbo records, which would become scratched after the bittersweet response to the first part, Turbo.  While the band once again managed to open themselves up to a broader audience, the overall response to Turbo was a resounding “eh.”  Although I absolutely despise hair/glam metal, I wouldn’t say this release as all bad since tracks like “Turbo Lover” and “Reckless” are worthy of returning to.  However, this album is a complete and utter synthesizer overload whose messages are quite cliché and absurd.  What’s odd is that this album, one of the band’s weakest, came out the same year as Slayer’s Reign In Blood, Megadeth’s Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying? and Metallica’s deemed magnum opus, Master of Puppets.  Look at the album on its own, and it’s at least tolerable.  Compare it to other releases that year, and it belongs in the trash.

Ram It Down (1988)

The second part of the original Twin Turbo double-record release, Ram It Down sought to balance rectifying the mistakes of Turbo while still keeping a bit of the core sound.  What we got is an album that’s overall a better package than its predecessor, but just barely.  Indications of a speed metal sound are definitely present, which would become a key reason for long-time drummer Dave Holland’s departure from the band.  At points, the style works wonders, with the title track and “Blood Red Skies” being the immediate standouts.  However, these points are matched by dull moments such as closing track “Monsters of Rock” and embarrassing, joyless cover of “Johnny Be Goode.”  As a result, Ram It Down proved to be little more than a fair improvement over Turbo.  But of course, Priest fans know that this wouldn’t be a proper sign of what would follow two years later.

Painkiller (1990)

Right from the drum intro the title track leading to the frantic guitar riffs, it’s clear that this isn’t the same Judas Priest fans had known for the past 20 years.  Painkiller is universally considered the Priest’s best effort to date, myself included.  One of the most immediate differences here is the welcome addition of drummer Scott Travis, filling in Dave Holland’s position.  His frantic drum work really helped to sell the speed and intensity that fueled the album with Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing providing arguably their best guitar playing ever.  For the entire first half of the album, nothing lets up.  As for the second half, Judas Priest slow things down just enough to let the listener gradually catch their breath before closing with “One Shot at Glory.”  Unfortunately, after the Painkiller tour, the band would find themselves taken to court over their cover of “Better By You, Better Than Me” on Stained Class and then see vocalist Rob Halford leave the band.

Pusha T and Malice form to make the hip-hop group Clipse.  Hailing from Virginia Beach, Virginia the duo began making a name for themselves during the 1990’s and eventually linked up with Pharrell Williams of The Neptunes production fame.

Finally my semester has ended and now I’m free to write here again, well… at least until January, haha, but I still have one month ¬¬. So, let’s get to the point. I’ve been passing these last few days writing things for school, and as you may think, I love to do my stuff while listening to the music. So just as a hobbie I checked some songs of one of my favorite groups and bands from all times: the Spanish group Mecano.

Mecano has been one of the most famous groups in Spain and it started during the 80’s. Its members were: Ana Torroja, and the brother José Maria Cano and Ignacio Cano. The band disbanded in 1998, after a compilation release, and since then, they just have released the same kind of material. A new compilation, called Siglo XXI came out on last November. Mecano is well-known for its exotic topics and their musical style, which started in the electronic pop area, and ended in the alternative/pop genre. Some of their songs are really complex, and they achieved a great success with songs that are considered as classics by now, like: Hijo De La Luna (Son Of The Moon), Mujer Contra Mujer (Woman Against Woman), La Fuerza Del Destino (The Power Of Faith) ó Barco A Venus (Boat To Venus).

Nevertheless, what attracts me from Mecano it’s not their deep lyrical work, but their songs recorded in other languages. Mecano recorded some of their most famous songs in Italian and in French, and they even recorded some music in English. Thanks to this, they achieved a worldwide recognition no other Spanish group has ever got. So, what I did during my anxious period of school, was finding some of their songs in the languages that I didn’t have (and now I have (: ) and I have to say some of them sound even better in Italian or French than in Spanish. One of this songs, is the one I’ve posted here.

El 7 De Septiembre (September 7) it’s a complex world/ballad written by Ignacio Cano, who dedicated the song to his then girlfriend Coloma Fernández Armero. It’s talks about the couple’s anniversary, which is remember by both of them, although they are not together anymore. It has a beautiful musical arrangement with violins and combined with Torroja’s voice. The song won the award for Best Song Of The Year in Spain in 1991. It is included in the 1991 album entitled Aidalai (meaning something like “Oh, Dalai”, because it refers to the Dalai Lama) and was recorded in Italian as Il 7 Di Settembre and in French as Le 7 Septembre. The three versions of this song are amazing and elegant, beautiful and poetic, so I highly recommend you to listen all of them.
