When it comes to international shipping, consumers and businesses must be aware of the cost, further

When it comes to international shipping, consumers and businesses must be aware of the cost, further more they need to have the how to knowledge to deal with International export requirement.

Shipping is easy, doing it right can be a challenge, when it comes to international shipping, you can leave it to the professionals to do for a fee or do it yourself and take all the risk.

First you need to know that equation behind shipping cost calculation:
The equation depends on three factors: Zone, weigh and dimensions. This is usually called Dimm weight where if you ship a feather of 1 OZ in large box, you will pay for equivalent 10+ pounds of weight.

You are paying for space in aircraft! So always keep this in mind when packaging. Also be aware that depending on destinations, some countries may refuse the contents, so always check with carriers. Example, Muslim countries prohibit shipment of anything offensive to religion, so sending a Penthouse Magazine to Kuwait will be confiscated.

Here are few tips on packaging:
1. Choose the Right Box
Use a box that is strong enough to protect the contents and large enough to leave space for adequate cushioning. You can also buy various sizes of boxes, as well as padded mailers, mailing tubes, and other packing materials at the store. If you choose a previously-used box, make sure you remove or cross out any old shipping labels, and make sure the box is in good shape, with no weak spots or cracks. Old or new, make sure the box is made of heavy, corrugated cardboard. Thinner boxes, such as most shoe boxes or gift boxes are not strong enough for shipping.

2. Protect and Pack
Don’t skimp on cushioning material. You can use shredded or crumpled newspaper, bubble wrap, or Styrofoam™ peanuts, or even plain air-popped popcorn. Pack items tightly to avoid shifting, and make sure the cushioning material covers all sides of the object.
If you’re shipping several items together, wrap each one separately and provide enough cushioning to prevent movement.

Fragile items need extra protection:

For extra identification, place a return address label inside the package. After packing, gently shake the box. If nothing moves, it’s ready to be sealed.

3. Seal Carefully
A strong seal is essential, so always use tape that is designed for shipping, such as pressure-sensitive tape, nylon-reinforced Kraft paper tape, or glass-reinforced pressure-sensitive tape. These items can be purchased at the store. We recommend you do not use wrapping paper, string, masking tape, or cellophane tape.

Make sure you seal the center seams at both the top and the bottom of the box securely. Cover all other seams with tape, and be sure not to leave any open areas which could snag on machinery.

You must be familiar with FedEx and UPS website and their constant reminders to open an account and save a whopping 10% on your next shipment. To open an account, all you need is a credit card! They do not perform any credit checks, there only concern is to be able to get authorizations from your credit card. They let you to believe that you are getting a great deal instead of using independent shippers, do you ever wonder why?

FedEx and UPS made shipping into a science! They have third party firms that research ways to maximize profits, so they bill for everything! here is what they do not want you to know:

1- 10% OFF is a discount of their highest Book rate! Using an independent shop may offer you a better discount!
2-Pick Up Fees from $4 to $15.00 per pick up
3- Address correction fee:$10 per package.
4- Dim weights
5- Residential Delivery surcharges of $2.50 to $3.00
6- Fuel surcharges from 3 to 31%
7- Signature Service surcharges from $10.50 too $24.50
8- Extra Delivery Reattempt charge of $25.00 per shipment.
9- International Document Prep fee: $20.00 to $40.00
10-Brokerage fees, most carriers will ad their fees to brokerage / customs fee!

The best part of their act is do not have to tell you or get your permission on hit your credit card! These charges will show up in your credit card statement and they are not detailed, all you see is one line item with tracking info. A shipment that was quoted to be $50.00 when you printed the label is now showing at $215.00 or more! When you sign up for the online account, you gave the carrier the right to bill your credit card for anything and everything pertaining to the shipment.

Now what? Shop around! Be careful not to use carrier’s stores like Kinkos, UPS stores, they offer book rates (think of them as MSRP) Use local shops that are independently owned and operated. They do not pay loyalty fees and support your local community.

If you are lucky to live in Metro Boston, look us up! We hear hundreds of horror stories from consumers that get burned by the Dot com accounts. Our system will offer you a real time quote and displays all carrier rates in front of you, in one screen shot! It will compile quotes from DHL – UPS – FEDEX and USPS and displayed them on monitor in front of you, the display will show Estimated time of deliveries, costs, and carriers. What You See Is What You Pay, no hidden fees, no Bills later!

Neighborhood Parcel can help you deflect these rate hikes! Simply open a business account and get up to 10% + off your shipping cost!

The USPS selected January 18th for the price change to the shipping services classes to be consistent with industry-wide practices. With the higher rates and additional surcharges of both the UPS and FedEx, which are effective in early January, the USPS price change will be competitive in the shipping services sector. With this price change, the USPS will still be positioned as the most cost-effective carrier for small packages.

Price changes for mailing services, including stamp prices, will be announced in February and will be effective in May 2009.

Price Change Overview

Prices will change on Sunday, January 18th, for Express Mail, Priority Mail, Parcel Select, Parcel Return Service, and some international shipping products. Overall, shipping services prices will increase an average of 5 percent. The complete list of new prices is available at www.usps.com/prices.

Customers using PC postage will save even more over retail with increased Commercial Base discounts. Commercial Base savings over retail will increase from 3% to 5% for Express Mail and from an average of 3.5% to an average of 4.7% for Priority Mail.

The USPS has announced that they will offer three pricing platforms-Retail (Retail Price is the standard counter price for postage at the Post Office)

The USPS is introducing a Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box, priced at $4.80, for domestic delivery. The box is the same price as the Priority Mail Flat Rate envelope, and at $4.80, they are the least expensive flat-rate package options. The box measures 8 5/8″ x 5 3/8″ x 1 5/8″, about the size of a video cassette. The box will also be available for international delivery, with a maximum weight of 4 pounds. It will cost $10.40 for delivery to Canada and Mexico and $12.30 for delivery to all other countries. As with all USPS flat-rate packaging, the new box is free to customers.

Commercial volume rebates will be eliminated on January 18, 2009. Any rebate earned from January 1st – 17th will be credited to the qualifying mail owner’s account at the end of the quarter. Commercial Plus pricing and the increase in Commercial Base discounts are replacing the commercial volume rebate program.

The average retail price increases per service are as follows:

Priority Mail: 3.9%

Express Mail: 5.7%

Parcel Select: 5.9%

Parcel Return Service: 5.3%

International Shipping: 8.5%

Resisting the urge to follow UPS and FedEx, the USPS has announced that they will not add a fuel surcharge for 2009, which is a tremendous advantage for shippers using the USPS.

Shipping Changes

Priority Mail Pricing

On average, Priority Mail retail prices will increase by 3.9 percent, while Priority Mail Commercial Base prices will average 4.7 percent less than retail prices. Priority Mail Commercial Plus customers will save, on average, 7 percent from retail prices.
