Here a few selected pieces of mine from the recent Good Times Spring Food & Wine magazine:

Brining Wine to Life:
Brew Dream and the wondrous new world of kombucha wine

Brew Dream pegs its unique wines as “kombucha-style,” but when speaking to people for whom the trendy term “kombucha” holds little meaning, owners Chase Fortner and Laura Bradford use descriptions like “sparkling fruit wine,” “probiotic wine spritzer,” and “a fresh take on sangria.”

Seated under a large oak tree at Brew Dream’s idyllic Ben Lomond winery, the pair cracks open a bottle of Apple White. Pale brown and lightly effervescent, the wine evokes the flavors of fresh apple cider with a subtle, yet noticeable, alcohol presence. Sweet and crisp, the drink has very little of the vinegary aftertaste normally associated with kombucha, which—for Santa Cruzans not in the know—is a popular health tonic made from tea and fermented yeast and bacteria.

The Grappleberry is rich and fruity, and more like a red wine than the Apple White is like a white. Brew Dream, which officially launched in January, strives to source only local and organic ingredients, and the owners are currently experimenting with a variety of fruits and flavors. A blackberry red, blueberry red, peach white and blueberry ginger are all in store when the season is right. All Brew Dream wines are crafted by hand in small five-gallon batches.

“Our whole philosophy now is to keep it local, with seasonal flavors depending on what fruit is available,” says Fortner, who began brewing kombucha wine as a hobby five years ago. Although the winemakers are tightlipped when it comes to their process—they are, as far as they know, the first kombucha winery in the country—they explain that it involves combining winemaking and kombucha brewing methods.

“It’s a fermentation of kombucha tea, fruit, and wine, which, when fermented together, provides all the probiotic benefits of kombucha with the added flavors of local fruits and wines,” Fortner says.

Brew Dream is truly a product all its own: part fruit wine and part live probiotic health drink, it comes in a champagne bottle with a cider cap and is caffeinated, thanks to the green tea base in the kombucha. Even its alcohol content is unique at around 7.4 percent—much higher than regular kombucha (which is typically .5 percent), and less than most wine. Unlike many wines, it’s best to drink Brew Dream fresh or soon after purchasing—although it won’t go bad if kept longer, its taste and makeup will change as the yeast continue to feed off of the sugars in the wine.

The concept was so new that the government agency in charge of wine labeling, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, wasn’t sure what to do with it. “The wine people in the labeling division didn’t know what kombucha was,” says Fortner. Brew Dream eventually got the word “kombucha” on its labels, and hope to someday also get approval for “probiotic.” Many of the purported health claims associated with kombucha are not scientifically backed, but Fortner and Bradford are looking to produce evidence for the theories they hold about their product.

“It’s probiotic, so while it gives you a buzz, it settles your stomach and aids in digestion, and it detoxifies your liver while you’re drinking,” says Fortner. “We are going to start working with a lab in Petaluma [Calif.] to back up some of the probiotic and health claims we have.”

Reactions to the wine have been positive so far, says Bradford. It’s a hit on the festival circuit, as well as in local health food stores like Staff of Life.

“If you don’t feel like drinking sometimes, and you’re at a social scene, it’s a nice alternative to having a full liquor drink or a beer,” says Bradford. “It is lighter and seems easier to digest and handle.”

So far, the duo says Brew Dream is proving to straddle the line between kombucha and wine gracefully, attracting fans from both sides of the spectrum.

“One of the most common things we hear back,” says Fortner, “is that people who don’t like kombucha, and sometimes people who don’t like wine, like it.” | Elizabeth Limbach

————————————————————————————————–

An Online Kitchen
: A day in the life of local vegan blogger Amey Mathews

In her 13 years of veganism, Amey Mathews has received the question (often with raised eyebrows and an incredulous tone) “What do you eat?” a few too many times.

After years as a self-professed “unhealthy vegetarian” whose diet consisted mainly of bread and cheese, going vegan forced Mathews to reassess her kitchen routine. “Now I go to the farmers’ market twice a week and [my diet] totally revolves around veggies,” says Mathews, a local yoga teacher. “That’s absolutely one of my favorite things about being vegan—how much it expanded my tastes.”

Eager to show the world what a vegan eats (and perhaps put that repetitive question to rest once and for all) Mathews started the blog “Vegan Eats and Treats” (veganeatsandtreats.blogspot.com) in August 2006.

“When I first got interested in vegan cooking, I looked online and there were maybe three or four vegan blogs, total—which is hilarious because now there are, like, three or four thousand vegan blogs,” she laughs. But her original intent—that the blog be a form of activism—quickly evolved.

“I realized that on the Internet no one looks up opinions they find challenging just to read about them,” she says. “You go to the Internet for what you already want. So I have a lot of people who aren’t vegan who read my blog, but they are at least interested in cooking and eating vegan food. The majority of people who do read it are vegan. The blog turned out to be more like a community of friends, and about sharing successes, and sometimes failures, in the kitchen.”

She picked up a few key lessons in blogging early on that helped shape the site: No. 1, she says, is that “plenty of meals are unremarkable and don’t need to go down in history.” This means blogging less often, but with a higher quality of posts. “I wait until I have something more interesting to post about,” she says.

The second most important thing to know as a food blogger, says Mathews, is that readers want to see big, eye-catching photos. Now armed with an SLR camera, Mathews has upped the ante on “Vegan Eats and Treats” images, but says she doesn’t take it as seriously as some other online foodies.

“The best bloggers are people who eat cold meals, which I’m not quite willing to do,” she says. “They take a lot of time, a lot of staging, and they have light tables and backdrops. I’ll do my best to take a good picture, but after five or six snaps, I’m ready to eat.”

On a recent sunny afternoon, Mathews set the table at her Soquel home with a home-cooked meal certainly worthy of a post: potato salad with peas, sorrel and shallot vinaigrette, and open-face sandwiches with avocado and lime spread on homemade “Green Monster Bread” (from the cookbook “Vegan Sandwiches Save the Day!”), topped with grilled herb tofu (crusted with fresh parsley, dill, basil, garlic and marinade) and New Native sprouts. For dessert, she served up “Grandaddies Cookies”—a recipe she based on her late grandfather’s favorite dessert of mocha almond fudge ice cream doused with Disaronno. (See page 60 for the recipe.)

She describes the blog as “lighthearted,” and says that, at its core, it’s simply about tasty food.

“I certainly have strong feelings [about veganism], and I’m so committed to it,” she says, “but I think you can win a lot more people over with a good attitude and good food.” | Elizabeth Limbach

————————————————————————————————–

Taste the Love
: Wonderfully Raw’s Coco-Roons make a splash far beyond Santa Cruz County

The Wonderfully Raw headquarters off of Hangar Way, in Watsonville, is perhaps the sweetest smelling warehouse around.

As home to the company’s flagship product, Coco-Roons, the space is filled with the aromas of vanilla, maple, lemon, strawberry and other all-natural flavors that make their way into the popular raw treats.

At the mouth of the warehouse, workers busily stack and shrink-wrap pallets of Coco-Roons that are destined for more than 1,000 stores across the country. Surveying the fortress of boxes of fresh product, thousands of pounds of almond flour in sacks, and an arsenal of 55-gallon drums of unfiltered maple syrup, CEO and “Macaroon Maven” Sequoia Cheney chuckles. “When I first started, I was buying the ingredients at Nob Hill. Now we’re doing contracts with thousands of pounds,” she says.

In the back, past a clean commercial kitchen filled with employees in crisp white lab coats and hair caps, lies the heart of the operation: a custom-made, walk-in dehydrator. Inside, the air is warm and even thicker with the smell of cookies. Cheney raises her voice over the machine’s loud whirring to explain that 800 cases of Coco-Roons are made in eight hours in the dehydrator.

As a raw product, Cheney explains, “this cookie is dehydrated at 118 degrees so that all of the vitamins, enzymes and minerals are still intact.”

At 58 years old, Cheney never expected to be running a new business. “We’ve been doing this for two years now, and we’re still in shock,” says Cheney, who formed the company with her gourmet chef son Eric Hara. “It feels like a dream.”

The determined seed for Wonderfully Raw was planted when Cheney was diagnosed with diabetes six years ago. After years of running art therapy programs in a Southern California hospital and then in prisons, Cheney and her husband, Jack, opened an alternative healing center in Watsonville called Three Trees. The diabetes diagnosis came as a big surprise.

“After having had such a healthy lifestyle, and doing all of this alternative healing, I thought ‘how can I get diabetes?’ But it was really a gift because it put me on a journey to find out even better ways to eat,” Cheney says. Intent on healing herself, she trained at a raw chef school in Mendocino and was off all medication and had reversed her diabetes within a year of the diagnosis. In the process, she’d caught the raw food bug, and was teaching raw cooking classes and selling raw items at Three Trees. The online grocery store Santa Cruz Local Foods soon began selling her goods, and, not long after, New Leaf Community Markets showed interest in the Coco-Roons. “They loved it and said ‘We want ’em, how quickly can we get them for all eight stores?’” Cheney recalls, “I said, ‘Wow, can you give me 30 days? I don’t have a bag or a label.’”

The Coco-Roon was designed as a tasty treat for those with dietary restrictions: in addition to being raw, they are gluten-free, dairy-free, low in sugar (unfiltered maple syrup is the sweetener), low carb, and organic. “Food is medicine” is the company’s guiding philosophy. Wonderfully Raw recently launched a new product—raw veggie snacks called Brussel Bites and Snip Chips that are similar to kale chips.

Seated in the office, sounds of the industrious warehouse streaming in, Cheney pulls a piece of paper off of a bulletin board. It’s a letter from a 10-year-old boy in Yuba City, Calif. that came in the mail a few days earlier. Attached to the thank you letter is a photo of him with a wide smile on his face and a bag of Coco-Roons in his hand.

“I get these daily,” Cheney says. “That makes it all worth it, when you know you’re changing someone’s life. When a kid takes the time to write you—c’mon. That’s the best thing in the whole world.” | Elizabeth Limbach

Discretion Brewing
: ‘Wisdom, wit, kindness and beer’ is the motto at Santa Cruz County’s new brewpub, Discretion Brewing

There was nothing very discrete about Discretion Brewing’s March opening—the county’s new brewery has been generating buzz for months.

“Since we put our sign up on 41st Avenue, every day we had people coming in saying ‘We’re so glad to have something on this side of town’ or ‘I live just down the street,’” says Dustin Vereker, the brewery’s Chief Beer Ambassador and son-in-law of owners Kathleen and Rob Genco. “Folks seem really excited that we are opening.”

After a few years of planning, the Discretion team, themselves, are also excited to be up and running. “We’d been talking about starting a family business of some sort for years,” says Kathleen, who quit her job at a private school two and a half years ago to make this family-owned organic brewery a reality.

While the brewery’s reception has been anything but, the “discretion” moniker translates into its overall mission and vibe: from the off-the-beaten path location, tucked away just off of 41st Avenue, to its desire to be more of a mellow place for community gathering than a rowdy watering hole or sports bar. (To foster that, they close at 8 p.m. and don’t have any televisions.)

“We wanted something that implied subtlety and thoughtfulness and kind of a safe place, a sanctuary,” says Kathleen.

For the most part, the beers—all organic—will also stick to that theme.

“We don’t necessarily want to have huge, in-your-face, high-alcohol beers all the time, which is sort of a trend,” says brewer Michael Demers, who has been brewing professionally since 1995, most recently at Boulder Creek Brewery. “We want to offer more sessionable beers that people can come and enjoy a few and still be able to leave and be safe.”

The opening lineup includes a German-style pilsner, a mild brown ale, a “nice and hoppy” American IPA, and a strong ale that embodies both the bold and slightly sweet style of a traditional English old ale with that of a West Coast American ale. “It won’t be big and hoppy like an IPA, but it will have some bitterness to the backbone,” explains Demers.

Discretion expects that its lagers—the pilsner, and others in the works—will be what set it apart. “That is a niche that is not filled in Santa Cruz County—no one is really doing lagers except for maybe once in a while as a specialty,” he says. This is because they are more difficult and time-consuming to brew, which Demers says is worth it. “They’re our personal favorite—we all love them,” he says.

The space is designed so that patrons can see the beer making. “You can smell the process, you can see the process, you get the whole experience,” says Vereker. Demers will be on hand to answer questions and will provide tours to those interested in a firsthand look at where the magic happens.

The brewery’s unique take on pub food is also sure to make it stand out. Discretion has paired with Main Street Garden & Café for its taproom fare, which is inspired by, meant to pair with, and often made using Discretion’s own beer. Main Street will operate as a pop-up at Discretion, serving up seasonal, sustainably minded dishes like pilsner-braised Brussels sprouts with breadcrumbs and chili made with Discretion beer and sausages from Fog Line Farm pigs (which, as it happens, feed on Discretion’s spent grain).

But for all of its distinctiveness, the Discretion team considers itself one part of a larger whole. They were regulars at Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing before deciding to open their own brewery, and say they have received continued support from that Westside beer hub and many others. “It’s very much a community,” says Kathleen. Discretion is one of three microbreweries to open in the county this year, bringing the total number of local breweries to around 10—making the Santa Cruz craft beer scene officially a force to be reckoned with, says Demers.

“Santa Cruz is now getting to the point where it can be considered a beer destination,” he says. “Each brewery is different and produces different tasting beers. There is room for more.” | Elizabeth Limbach

————————————————————————————————–

So begins the story of Taylor Peck’s rise to artisan soda maestro. The journey began in an apartment at UC Santa Cruz’s Kresge College, where, in 1995, Peck and some roommates put on events on campus, and then in town, under the name Nub Circus. The real adventure began during summer break in 1996, when Peck and future part owner of his business Nate Brogan traveled across the country selling raw-food burritos and chai tea, “which, in 1996, despite its hundreds of years of infiltrating other cultures, was more or less new to ours,” says Peck.

The road trip culminated with a stop at Burning Man, where they set up a booth and served free chai. “That was when I realized it was a big thing, and it was there I had my epiphany that I wasn’t going back to school,” he says. He took a leave of absence from college to pursue a beverage career, and never looked back. “I’m sure they expire, but for all I know I’m still on a leave of absence from UCSC,” he jokes.

The chai-focused company took an unexpected turn around four years ago, when it got stuck with a large amount of a unique chai concentrate they had made for a client. “We were sitting on enough inventory of this concentrate that it could have toppled the company if we hadn’t found an outlet for it,” says Peck, who decided to test it out in a chai soda concept he had been contemplating. “It was an immediate perfect fit. It was meant to be.”

Now 16 years old, the company has morphed into a craft brewer of all-natural sodas, including the flagship Chai Cola, that hearken back to the early days of botanically rich soft drinks. “It comes form a period of time when sodas were first coming into vogue medicinally,” explains Peck, adding that Taylor’s Tonics are made in small batches by hand using distinct, mostly organic ingredients. “There’s a certain amount of magic and witchy-ness to everything we do.”

The small company now has sodas in 700 retail locations across 40 states, and recently opened a store, The Fizzary, in San Francisco’s Mission District, where they carry 900 varieties of soft drinks from craft soda companies, of which Peck says 25 percent are natural and 10 percent are organic or “earth-based.” While most of its operations now take place in San Francisco, Taylor’s Tonics still has roots (and a Watsonville facility) in the Santa Cruz area. “Santa Cruz established our company ethos,” Peck says.

“We’ve cycled through 16 to 20 product concepts, looking for ‘the one,’” he adds. “Taylor’s Tonics is the first one we genuinely think has national legs.”

Although, while they are certainly better for you than a soda of the conventional, high-fructose corn syrup variety, Peck is quick to point out that Taylor’s Tonics are still a treat.

“We are trying to enrich our product with the original botanicals [found in sodas],” says Peck, “But when someone asks, ‘Is this good for me?’ I say that we have one guarantee—we guarantee it will make you not thirsty.” | Elizabeth Limbach

————————————————————————————————–

REBBL With a Cause
: New beverage combines taste and quality with a humanitarian mission

Five years into its existence, Half Moon Bay-based nonprofit Not For Sale took stock of its work combating global human trafficking and decided it needed a new approach.

“We looked at everything and said ‘we are going to be doing the same work forever unless we start addressing the root problems,’” says Allison Trowbridge, Santa Cruz native and NFS’s vice president of strategic partnerships. “[We asked] ‘What would it look like to go to the source of the issue?’”

The organization decided to focus on the Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon, where they already had long-term relationships with the indigenous tribes and boots on the ground working to protect them from trafficking.

The idea was born to create a separate, for-profit beverage company that would source ingredients from the region, creating a sustainable enterprise. The end result is REBBL, a line of health tonics that hit stores—beginning with New Leaf Community Markets in Santa Cruz County—this spring. In addition to coordinating the procurement of the herbs REBBL uses, NFS will be a benefactor of the new company.

“The funds that come back allow us to reinvest in the region,” says Trowbridge, explaining that NFS’s work in Peru includes job training, putting children in school, artisan training, and community development.

REBBL CEO Palo Hawken was brought on to develop the tonics, which come in Hibiscus Mint, Ginger Citrus, and Forest Berry. His vision was to craft good-tasting drinks using legendary, therapeutic-strength medicinal herbs in levels that “have biological relevance” and aren’t just “marketing gimmicks.”

“We are taking the culmination of thousands of years of work and knowledge and reverence for a few culturally important herbs from around the world and giving them a place in the modern North American supermarket,” Hawken says.

It was important to him that the products stand on their own two legs as desirable drinks—a distinction that will ultimately make the tonics an even more powerful agent of change, he says. “Most efforts like this, to me, are not destined for success,” says Hawken. “Usually the quality of the product takes a backseat to the focus on the message, and the assumption that the message is enough to exist in the marketplace. Well, the marketplace is ruthless. It buys what it wants and rejects what it doesn’t. What we have here is a product that completely justifies its own existence, which is ultimately to Not For Sale’s benefit.” | Elizabeth Limbach

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. – Proverbs 14:12 NLT “I

There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death. – Proverbs 14:12 NLT

“I know where I’m going! I don’t need to ask for directions!”

Yes, as a red-blooded American male, I have uttered those exact words on more than one occasion, and lived to regret them. I have rejected the loving counsel of my well-meaning wife. I have ignored her pleas for me to stop and ask for directions at the nearest convenience store or gas station. I have stubbornly stuck to my ill-chosen path, even long after I have determined that the current direction in which we were headed would never get us to our original destination. I would rather arrive late than admit defeat. You can chalk it up to pride, arrogance, or an over-active sin nature, but the bottom line is that most of us as men hate to admit we’re lost or wrong. And that proclivity can tend to leave us off course and out of sorts with those who find themselves innocent passengers on our sometimes aimless journey through life.

My dislike for directional assistance has never resulted in our family being so lost that we were in danger of losing our lives. We’ve never ended up in the Mojave Desert, out of gas, rationing the last Diet Pepsi before succumbing to dehydration and heat stroke. But that same prideful streak that would cause a man to arrogantly drive in the wrong direction rather than confess his mistake and turn around, can show up in other areas of our lives. All throughout the Book of Proverbs, life is referred to as a journey. It speaks of paths and ways, streets and roads. Walking is regularly mentioned throughout the book. There is an unavoidable sense of destination and determination to end up in the right place by avoiding wrong turns. We are encouraged to seek wisdom in order that we might live our lives wisely. We are commanded to fear God and follow His ways. To put it simply, we are called to follow His directions because He’s God and He knows best. We are told that following His directions will result in disciplined, successful lives and an understanding of what is right, just, and fair (Proverbs 1:3). We are promised insight, knowledge and discernment – for life – so we’ll know the right way to go in life (Proverbs 2:9). Proverbs is all about living life on God’s terms, following His directions, and trusting that He knows how to get us where we need to go.

The God-Directed Life.

Those who say they are following Christ have essentially agreed to allow God to lead their lives. To say I am following someone sounds like it was my decision and I am the one determining my own way. But when I follow Christ, I am walking the way of God, the path He has chosen for a righteous, godly life. It’s the same path that Christ took and, when I follow Him, I go the same way. Only He knows the direction, so I must follow closely. If I choose to wander off the path and go my own way, it will not go well for me. The godly life is a God-directed life. It is learning to allow Him to direct my steps, determine my way, and then empower me as I take each step. Solomon seems to have known this truth, because it permeates the Proverbs. He realizes that the godly person is one who recognizes that God directs his life. But Solomon knows that, as human beings, we struggle with the seeming loss of control. In Proverbs 20 he asks us “the Lord directs our steps, so why try to understand everything along the way?” (Proverbs 20:24 NLT). We want to know where we are going and we want to know why we have to go there. At times we find ourselves going through a rough patch of life and we demand that God explain how He got us there. But God is not obligated to explain Himself to us. A prerequisite for following anyone is TRUST. Especially if we don’t know where they are taking us. Along the way, we may encounter difficulties, but we have to trust that God knows what is best. But not only do we have to trust God for the direction of our lives, we have to trust him for strength for the journey. All along the way, we will have countless opportunities to stray and take the path of the drunkard, the fighter, the swindler, the sluggard, and the fool. Solomon deals with these individuals repeatedly. They illustrate the life of the person who has decided to follow their own path rather than God’s. We can easily become self-deceived when we live self-directed lives. We can even think we are doing well, but Solomon warns us, “Who can say, ‘I have cleansed my heart; I am pure and free from sin?’” (Proverbs 20:9 NLT). This is obviously a rhetorical question and the answer is “no one.” Only God knows our heart and only God can cleanse it. Only God can direct our lives so that we end up living lives of integrity and wholeness. Only God’s way will result in a life marked by godly behavior. “The Lord’s light penetrates the human spirit, exposing every hidden motive” (Proverbs 20:27 NLT). As God directs our lives, He will use the activity of the journey to expose what is going on inside of us. He will reveal weaknesses and sinful habits that need to be repented of and removed from our lives. He will change our hearts and alter our behavior, and it is our God-directed behavior that will reveal to others that we are His. “Even children are known by the way they act, whether their conduct is pure, and whether it is right” (Proverbs 20:11 NLT). When we follow God, others will see our walk and know by our behavior and the direction of our lives that we are indeed godly.

Living Life in 4D

Life can be hard. Decisions have to be made. Difficulties must be dealt with. Sometimes it is hard to know what to do or how to respond. We are bombarded by bad advice and the well-meaning counsel of friends who are just as lost and confused as we are. So what are we to do? Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, encourages us to “cry out for insight, and ask for understanding. Search for them as you would for silver; seek them like hidden treasures” (Proverbs 2:4 NLT). It would appear that Solomon expected us to put in a fair amount of effort into the process. He seems to believe that we must want insight and understanding bad enough that we would expend some energy in order to get them. Cry out! Ask! Search! Seek! How badly do we want these things? How hard are we willing to pursue them until we find them?

As we go through life we encounter our desperate need for insight, understanding, wisdom, and knowledge. This world can be a confusing place. We don’t always know what to do. So the first step seems to be a recognition of our deficiencies. We have to come to an understanding of our lack of understanding. We are not the brightest bulbs in the box. But the sad truth seems to be that we don’t usually reach this point of awareness until something difficult happens in our lives that leaves us at a loss. It is in those times of desperation that we tend to turn to God, and that is the key – we have to turn to the source. Solomon makes it clear that insight and understanding are only available from one source and that is God. When we cry out, ask, search and seek from Him, we are told that we will “understand what it means to fear the Lord” and we “will gain knowledge of God” (Proverbs 2:5 NLT). God gives us discernment, direction, discipline and discretion – the four Ds. He provides us with all we need to live life on this planet wisely, safely, and righteously. Rather than live according to the standards of this world, we learn to live God’s way. We learn to think like He thinks, love what He loves, hate what He hates, and view life from His perspective. This life can be hard, but God has given us everything we need to not only survive, but thrive. We can live wise lives, marked by discernment, direction, discipline and discretion. He will keep us on the right path. He will help us make wise decisions. He will protect us from the temptation of this world. He will give us the ability to see life from His perspective. But first we must come to the realization that we need what He has. We must desire His understanding, knowledge, insight and wisdom more than anything else in the world. Then we must seek after it diligently, eagerly, and regularly.

When it comes to living life, all of us have a terrible sense of direction. But God has made the path clear. His own Son has walked on ahead of us blazing an unmistakable trail to follow. We have the Word of God to light our way and the Spirit of God to empower us for the journey. We have the testimonies of countless saints who have gone before us, assuring us of that God’s way is indeed the only way. We have the warnings of Proverbs to remind us that the world’s way is the wrong way. It may look promising, even pleasurable, but it’s a dead end – literally. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take” (Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT).

I was browsing the shelves of a used book store yesterday, when I ran into an old college boyfriend. A handsome guy even now; tall, dark, rough around the edges…We did the regular catching up on the time we hadn’t seen one another, ‘where are you living now, are you married, kids…’ I was listening to the words trickling from his mouth, until a memory flashed through my mind. I recalled an afternoon spent in his room and my breasts began to tingle in response… Quickly I shook myself back into the present and tried to focus on his story…

He was indeed married, with two young ones. Things had started off wonderfully and he was convinced he’d met the woman of his dreams. In time the dream had faded and real life had set in. Happiness had dwindled, and so had their intimacy. I looked at him then, and tried to imagine a woman denying him her touch… of a woman not wanting to be touched by him…

I could feel his gaze, hot and intense on my almost sheer dress. He was caressing me with his eyes, no doubt holding himself back from gripping me tight and pulling me to him. I scanned the bookcases for any people nearby and took his hand, gently pulling him toward the dark corner of the store. The little bell above the door had not chimed someone’s entrance for quite some time, and the owner was tinkering in the back room, likely searching for a few interesting relics to display on the dusty shelves. I pushed him, backed into the corner and lowered myself to his waist, where I unzipped his trousers. They fell to his knees and I remembered the beautiful…

I was browsing the shelves of a used book store yesterday, when I ran into an old college boyfriend.

Call me, so we can create our own ending…

Elizabeth (your sweet Canadian/Swede)

The Spanish government is looking at introducing a compulsory language and culture “exam

The Spanish government is looking at introducing a compulsory language and culture “exam” for future citizens of the country as part of a package of immigration reforms which would also make it easier for Spanish authorities to strip new citizens of their passports.

If the draft bill will be accepted those people wanting to become Spanish citizens will have to prove they have a “sufficient” level of Castilian and that they have integrated into Spanish society.

The draft act also would also pave the way for the Spanish government to strip people of their Spanish citizenship for reasons of national security or public order.

Europa Press reported also that: “New citizens of Spain could also lose their citizenship if they voluntarily join “the army of another country or take up political office in a foreign state”.

Under the present regime, this is only the case if the Spanish government has expressly prohibited these acts.

New citizens of Spain who fraudulently use the nationality they have renounced to become Spanish could also see their Spanish citizenship revoked.

Spain’s civil code only allows people from Hispanic countries, Portugal, the Philippines, Andorra and Equatorial Guinea to keep their citizenship.

Citizens of all other countries have to give up their original passport when they are granted Spanish nationality.

The new draft bill of the Reforma Integral de los Registros (Comprehensive Reform of Registration) also outlines key changes to the citizenship application process.

If the law gets approved, candidates will have to front up to a notary to have their documents certified.

That notary would then be required to certify that the candidate had passed the citizenship exam.

Notaries would also have to confirm that the candidate had given the obligatory oath declaring obedience to the king and the constitution.

In October 2012, was confirmed that 430,000 applications for Spanish citizenship remained outstanding, and that this number was growing by 10,000 a month.

Peak immigration group the Madrid Immigrants Platform (PIM) responded on Thursday by telling Europa Press that the draft law was “a new attempt to restrict the rights of foreigners”.

PIM said proposed changes that could see people stripped of their citizenship if they posed a threat to national security or public disorder were a way of frightening people into not participating in politics or social movements: “They want to create a second legal category of Spaniards, with full civil rights and those who are limited in exercising those rights because they run the risk that the government will look badly on their action and withdraw their nationality at their own discretion”.

PIM also responded negatively to proposed changes that would mean would be citizens have to obtain certification from a notary to show that they had passed the official citizenship exam.

The group said: “This change is something that will “benefit” notaries at the expense of foreigners, we call on society at large and the relevant authorities to stop this new attempt to limit the rights of foreigners”.

“Prime Minister Rajoy and (Justice Minister) Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón need to know that we will continue to denounce these abuses” the group said in a statement.

Many citizens of European Union countries living in Spain would not be directly affected by the proposed changes as these people can live in Spain on their own passports.

I was particularly struck by a poem posted by ivonprefontaine.com (Teacher As Transformer) yesterday

I was particularly struck by a poem posted by ivonprefontaine.com (Teacher As Transformer) yesterday. As with most things evocative, we considered Derek Walcott’s words differently – which is why I didn’t reblog his words.

Once again, I am motivated by friends, for whom this will resonate individually. Yet I hope above all, among the takeaways is a feeling of the tremendous value you have, the wonder that you offer up everyday and the love you deserve – from yourself first and foremost.

The time will come

when, with elation,

you will greet yourself arriving

at your own door, in your mirror,

and each will smile at the other’s welcome

and say, sit here. Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was your self.

Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart

to itself, to the stranger who has loved you

all your life, whom you ignored

for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,

the photographs, the desperate notes,

peel your own image from the mirror.

Sit. Feast on your life.

I’m really going to try to work on this…I need to. You need to. Let’s do it together, ok? Happy Saturday all.

“Child, child, do you not see? For each of us comes a time when we must be more than we are

“Child, child, do you not see? For each of us comes a time when we must be more than we are” — Lloyd Alexander

Well the last few weeks have brought with them a frenetic level of activity reminiscent of earlier chapters in my life. Facilitating training sessions at two law firms; attending a national convention where I will be moderating a panel on effective communication between leaders in practice offices and their counterparts at ‘headquarters’; discussions on employee engagement at another company and then back to another professional services firm to chair forums on a number of issues all rolling up under the header of ‘organizational dynamics’. Ok, stop yawning – I find this stuff pretty fascinating, and the people I meet as a result, even more interesting and engaging. It’s the people – I’m just so damn drawn to the people.

So somewhere around the end of May or June, things may slow down a bit once more. Some things haven’t changed – the more I have to do, the less I sleep and the more I perseverate. For those of you who have not been ‘gifted’ with this talent, I’ll describe it quickly. It starts with a benign thought, like “I hope I can pull all this together in time”, and from there it blossoms into a profusion of peripatetic petals (it is spring and Cherry Blossom time here in DC after all) that fall all over my mind, covering the synapses, neurons and pathways with layer upon layer of resistant ground cover. Thought loses all rhyme or reason, and I spend an inordinate amount of time getting in my own way. Do I know that I really should get out the leaf blower? Of course I do – I’m just too busy looking at the magnificent mess I have created.

Now this talent of mine exists in direct counterpoint with another ability that I really do have about many, many issues. When my sons were younger, they maintained their rooms as temples to the God Of Who Cares. Somehow the word ‘messy’ really doesn’t do their efforts justice – neither does ‘unhygienic’. Once a week, I would expect them to make some effort to return their rooms into something livable, for I really didn’t want them contracting some weird bacteria that is only found in the Amazon and the soles of filthy socks. Their disregard drove Andy crazy – he’s the kind of guy who feels that everything has a place and there’s a place for everything – and if not, toss it out. So as he would get increasingly exorcised, I would become calmer. And my mantra through those years was “If this is going to bother you in five years honey, then I will invest in this issue with all the emotional energy I can summon. But if this isn’t going to matter five years hence, then I’m letting it go”.

Hypocrite – thy name is Mimi.

You see I really believe that little mantra – I do. I just don’t apply it with as much conviction when it comes to my own efforts. So in short – I become my own pain in the butt. Somebody needs something from me – ok, let’s jump into hyper-drive, over-think it and deliver with everything I’ve got. And then collapse and chastise myself for all that excess worry and emotional self-flagellation. Oh, and then start the whole process again…because after all, this is different. It’s about someone else’s needs. I have to be better this time, right?

Last night though – somewhere between Carson Daly and the 2:30AM news on ABC – a memory came to the fore and I think as a result, I am going to try to teach my foolish self what I already know.

Years ago, after one back surgery or another, I lost the use of my arms. Truly. I could raise one arm high enough to bring a utensil to my lips, the other only far enough to scratch an inch near my waist. The surgeon wasn’t alarmed (of course, they weren’t his arms) – neurological effrontery can make for some pretty lousy retribution. I was petrified. All of a sudden elements of daily self-care were elusive to me. Andy would wash and dry my hair (with enormous affection and limited expertise – we will not conjure any thoughts of how I looked during this time), I drank coffee through a straw, modifications were made. The doctor was sure my range of motion would return – he had no doubt, so I believed him. My anxiety became more reflective of the ‘when’ not the ‘if’, and immediately became more manageable. In five years, this would not be an issue for me – I knew that. My thoughts became less frantic, I began to clear away the disorderly mess that had become my thought process. And yes, the doctor knew what he was talking about.

Which brings me back to this moment. In five years it will matter to me that I gave my best to others – period. I won’t get there by letting my worry trump my determination. Let me re-phrase – I may get there, but I will be have depleted essential elements of the thoughts I need to be happy. Today, I’m going to follow the advice of Steve Martin – “I’ve got to keep breathing. It’ll be the worst business mistake if I don’t”.

I hope this makes you smile – and if by chance you identify with any of this – I hope it helps you breathe.

The following methods are applicable to Bach Flower Remedy, Gem Remedy or any remedy for the matter.

The following methods are applicable to Bach Flower Remedy, Gem Remedy or any remedy for the matter.

How to take the pills orally?

Take the remedies two to three pills of each one by one. More pills will not increase the impact.

Leave a gap of 5 minutes between taking different remedies.

Take it for two to four times a day, depending on the intensity of the problem and whether you need to take some other remedies as well.

Don’t touch the pills by hands. Use the cap of the container to take the pills.

Where can I get Remedies?

Bach Flower Remedies are available in all homeopathy shops as well as well as in the centre.

Any brand is ok.

Other remedies including special combinations (packs like study pack, harmony pack etc.) are available only in the centre.

Can I chant as I don’t get Bach Flower Remedies in my place?

Bach Flower remedies are available all over the world.

They contain no chemicals. So don’t be apprehensive about taking them.

They are inexpensive too. The cost of the pill for a day will be less than the cost of cup of coffee.

When you are remedies advised to take remedies, please do take them, as the answer has come from the divine.

If you still insist in chanting go ahead. Don’t put the question back to us. However, It might still work for you.

When we take a remedy, can we also chant the names of the remedies?

These flower names or remedy names are switch words only.

Chant them, write them or keep their pictures.

Instead of taking the remedies only, can you give me switch words, angel numbers or mantras instead? Will chanting be enough?

If you are suggested to take the remedies, please don’t ask these questions.

You may do as per your discretion.

For chronic situations, if a problem has persisted for a long time, then it would be good if you take them orally.

Can I take the remedies while taking other medications?

Yes you can!

No side-effects it taking the pills. Either it will work or it won’t – especially when the remedies are not prescribed correctly.

The Bach Flower Kit

The Kit has all the thirty-eight remedies.

Each container has 100 pills and it is around rupees 100 (2 dollars) plus courier charges.

Taking the remedies orally will always help. It is better than chanting. Don’t you think we have other concerns to attend too?

Buy all of them as they are not expensive. You don’t know when you will need them.

How long the pills will be effective?

There is no end-date.

As long as it is kept in a proper condition, you may keep it forever.

The remedies in liquid form will evaporate if you keep them outside for a longer period. So, keep them in the fridge.

How long I need to take the remedy?

For specific life situations like getting married, take it for at least six months.

Say for an interview, you might take the pills the day before and just before the interview. In addition, keep the pills in the pocket, so that you will be inside the energy field of the healing flowers.

For other situations, take it for three to four weeks.

If there is not much improvement (definitely there will be some) then report whatever that has changed and ask for the new set of remedies. Your mental state would have changed then. So you will need a different combination.

Don’t think the remedies, you have bought has gone waste, for they may be required in the future too and they don’t have an expiry date, as long you keep them in good condition.

However, understand nobody knows when you need to stop. Only divine knows. Until then, have patience, faith and trust in the remedies.

Remedies in liquid form

VANDANA

I got the remedies. How many drops of each one in the bottle of water?

Naran

Put two drops of each in the water.

Taking Pills (continued…)

If you are taking the pills, take two pills of each remedy mentioned, twice or thrice a day, depending on the severity.

If you are using the water method, put five pills of each in a bottle of water and drink them. If you don’t like the taste of the pills, especially when you don’t want your kids to know you are giving them remedies put the pills in glass of hot water.

You can also write or chant them as switch words.

Ideally, if the problem is persisting for long, physical intake is better.

Day 97: I awoke this morning craving the word, feeling as though I needed to ingest it as if it were

Day 97:

I awoke this morning craving the word, feeling as though I needed to ingest it as if it were manna for my physical body. I was drawn to the book of Proverbs… the book of practicality where wisdom, explicit examples, and instruction collide. It was there that I received the impression to move forward linking destiny, our “why,” to guidance and wisdom, our “how”.

So, here we go…

Proverbs Chapter 1

Do any of the following words look familiar?

Wisdom and Discipline
Understanding Words of Insight
Acquiring Discipline
Instruction
Knowledge and Discretion
Listen and Add to Their Learning

These are all words we have touched on in some way, shape, or form while on our quest to discovering and pursuing destiny. “Ironically”, all of these words can be found in the first 7 verses of Proverbs. Let’s keep our eyes open for wisdom connected to destiny as we read.

1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:

2 for gaining wisdom and instruction;
for understanding words of insight;
3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior,
doing what is right and just and fair;
4 for giving prudence to those who are simple,
knowledge and discretion to the young—
5 let the wise listen and add to their learning,
and let the discerning get guidance—
6 for understanding proverbs and parables,
the sayings and riddles of the wise.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,
but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Warning Against the Invitation of Sinful Men

8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.

Wisdom’s Rebuke

20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall[d] she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:
22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?
23 Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.
24 But since you refuse to listen when I call
and no one pays attention when I stretch out my hand,
25 since you disregard all my advice
and do not accept my rebuke,
26 I in turn will laugh when disaster strikes you;
I will mock when calamity overtakes you—
27 when calamity overtakes you like a storm,
when disaster sweeps over you like a whirlwind,
when distress and trouble overwhelm you.
28 “Then they will call to me but I will not answer;
they will look for me but will not find me,
29 since they hated knowledge
and did not choose to fear the Lord.
30 Since they would not accept my advice
and spurned my rebuke,
31 they will eat the fruit of their ways
and be filled with the fruit of their schemes.
32 For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them;
33 but whoever listens to me will live in safety
and be at ease, without fear of harm.”

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his

For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God. (John 3:20-21)

These words we hear the Lord Jesus say to Nicodemus at Mass today echo what He said about “nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.” (Luke 12:2-3)

I.e. No one keeps secrets from God.

While I was trying to nurse my poor back I had the chance to watch the recent movie version of Anna Karenina. When Anna and the Count are beginning their affair, they picnic together in a secluded spot. But Anna nonetheless worries about being overheard. The Count says, “There’s no one around.” Then she looks up through the trees to the sky.

There is always Someone around.

Does that mean that the Lord Jesus invented the idea of “transparency?”

Well, not exactly… He also counseled—and practiced—discretion. He spoke openly in parables, but only explained them in private to His chosen ones. He ordered His disciples never to cast pearls before swine. He knew all along Who He was and what the Father willed for Him, but He was mighty cagey about spelling it all out. He told the people He cured to keep quiet about it. When demons recognized Him as the Messiah, He commanded them to be silent. He ordered us, when we pray, to go to our inner rooms to do so.

We certainly want “transparent” organizations, as opposed to shady, corrupt ones. The Lord Himself declared, more or less, something that we all know: Honest people welcome investigators. Honest people have nothing to hide. In fact, honesty gives us the luxury to forget the things that we tell people today. If all the things we say today are true, then they’ll be true tomorrow, too, whether or not we remember. Liars have to lay awake nights remembering all their lies.

The light of truth will reveal all in the end. The truth will vindicate the honest and will condemn the dishonest.

But, until then, not every moment calls for “full disclosure.” I had a girlfriend in college, and we agreed that our relationship had to be based on “100% honesty, all the time.” You can see how that worked out.

Being genuinely trustworthy has two sides: 1. Always speaking truth. 2. Keeping silent a lot of the time. We just heard the consummate example of this two weeks ago: During His Passion, the Lord—Who did not shy away from speaking the truth at the proper time—went from quiet to absolutely silent. People asked Him questions, to which He certainly knew the answers. But He opened not His mouth. It was not the time. Speaking would have served no purpose.

The truth is always bigger than what we mortals can know or express. May we seek it always, live in it always, testify to it when we should, and spend the rest of the time listening for it.

THE PANTY SHACK IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

Hold onto your panties, boys! Literally. Somebody said there’s a panty bandit running around the neighborhood stealing panties off ladies’ clotheslines and balconies. The braver ones have even been seen sneaking into ladies’ apartments at night to steal from the slumpering beauties’ hampers! Mofos are scaling 4-story buildings, I hear, just to get themselves a pair of sweet smelling, fresh worn panties!

I think that’s just a shame. Nobody should ever have to risk life and limb just to get a whiff of some pretty lady’s panties. So, I emailed admin (or some stuffy uppity up) who said she talked to some of the girls in the neighborhood about MY IDEA of having a panty drive to support charity.

Turns out, our girls are quite a charitable bunch. I’ve got about 20 different pairs of panties to share. Some are new, some are old, some are borrowed, some are blue. And some are just plain nasty! If you don’t see anything that strikes your fancy, send me an email and I’ll check around with the girls to see if we can find what you’re looking for. If you’re in a hurry, or If you’re looking for a particular favourite lady’s panties, let me know and we’ll get her done…

I like guys. I’m not a man basher. I know nobody is perfect, and I don’t pretend to be.

I like guys. I’m not a man basher. I know nobody is perfect, and I don’t pretend to be. But I have myself a big ol’ pet peeve. I’m not sure if there is a more sophisticated term for it but for my purposes I’m just going to call it, “Stupid”.

I have a problem with people who whine about the results they get from a specific action, but then keep performing that action. Diets are a great example of this. ”I ate 2 bacon cheese burgers and my pants don’t fit!!?? WHAH!! I’m going to go eat a cake now!” Which is all fine and well if you don’t mind being morbidly obese, but don’t cry about it to me. I don’t care and I will poke you in the stomach like you’re a dough boy.

This hypocritical behavior is sometimes excusable if you are young and naive, or at least trying to better yourself-mistakes are allowed, but when it appears to the observer that you are just blatantly stupid, I take no pity.

I have a male friend on Facebook. (One of many, imagine that!) He is always putting up quotes about love. How trust is so important in a relationship, how he’s looking for a wonderful woman to share his life with, how he’s longing for that special someone, and how he’s such a great man…blah, blah, blah… It makes me feel bad for him, I wish I could be that woman for him, but I’m just not attracted to him. And he reminds me of why I’m not into him when he put’s up posts similar to the one he did today. It’s a picture of a woman in a thong, just an ass shot. She’s got her hands on said ass, and is pulling the cheeks apart? Some sort of attempt at demonstrating how bootyliscious she is. It’s on his FB page. Clear as day. It was an Instagram pic he liked on some girls profile that he follows. I don’t mean to pass judgement on him. Humans are, by nature, sexual creatures. We have needs and desires. I myself, may or may not have, watched “Magic Mike”…and then watched it again, fastforwarding to the dance parts. So yea, hypocrisy. BUT I’m not crying about finding a meaningful relationship….on FB at least…

The differential here, to me-cuz I’m special!- he is trying to recruit women on FB, myself included, and then he posts that. Does he not know his 2 accounts are linked? I just wonder, do guys not realize the message that sends to a good woman? I hope that includes me. It says, you’re sleezy. It says, while I’m home cleaning up the dinner dishes or putting the baby to bed, you’ll be out at the strip club with your boys. I get it, you’re single, have fun while you’re not tied down. But it isn’t doing your reputation any favors and any “Poor guy, hope he finds someone special!” goes right out the window. Don’t be stupid.

A little while back, Twitter quietly enabled a feature to download your own archives, every tweet yo

A little while back, Twitter quietly enabled a feature to download your own archives, every tweet you have ever sent there at your disposal. Now I’m an admitted Twitter lover, I’ve had mines for over 4 years, about 30,000 tweets to my credit. It also serves as a snapshot of my life, my words, my thoughts as I grew and mature. Some of it, I look back and laugh, others merely shake my head. Notably a very public spat with “Her” that wasn’t a good look for either of us. As time progressed and Twitter itself became more popular, more people I knew in real life started logging on and naturally I dialed back a little. Not that I was essentially being someone that I was not, but rather there were traits I rather not have highlighted. When I started this blog, I was going to make an accompanying twitter account but I thought better of it. Like Facebook and Twitter before it, I didn’t want to once again have to worry about censorship or saying things here I would have to explain later. I feel we are all entitled to some sort of privacy, something that’s is all but lost in a social media era.

So there’s a girl, let’s call her “Special”, wait actually I have brought her up before (Flirting), but she wasn’t special then. Anyway, now me and special are talking, she mentions something on instagram,

“Are you on instagram”
“Yeah”
“What’s your name”
“Tristan”

I mean she could’ve been more specific, but seriously there is a method to my madness. Any person I’m considering seriously dating, complete social media blackout, don’t friend, follow, poke, like, tag, me. I don’t have anything to hide but there’s nothing for you to see. This was an easier sell than I even thought, perhaps because by now we all know somebody who has or personally have had a relationship end because of social media. People are flirts, keyboard gangsters, their profiles are able to be access but hundreds or even thousands *fixes tie* of people, no one wants to embarrassed, that high road looks a little too high for my taste. Ultimately she agreed. It was too easy….maybe she has something to hide.

That’s what makes this a double edged sword. Who knows what she posts? Who knows if she just gonna just be Googling me anyway? If she finds something she doesn’t like can I get off per the 4th amendment? To answer my own questions, I don’t care. I don’t need to see thirsty negroes posting “damn ma” on her pictures (okay I might’ve snuck a peek and it wasn’t me it was a friend who wanted to see who she was). I don’t say anything on my social networks that would get me in trouble and everyone knows women don’t believe in illegal search and seizure, will break in your house, steal your tablet and then have something to say about a Facebook message she saw.

Perhaps privacy should’ve always been the alternative, “She” was on all my sites and every tweet felt like I was on the first episode of “Martin”, I told “Miss” about the blog as my friend, now she’s a jilted lover who loves to hate to love to hate reading. Exes before that had the passwords and everything. Social media blackout….this might could work.

Privacy no longer exists according to one of my professors. I think that he is mostly true. The concept of privacy still exists but privacy itself doesn’t any longer. Think about it, at one time many personal details were kept a secret amongst one person and those they trusted. Now, the same information is available to anyone who desires to know it. The Internet, and cell phones have erased the lines of what is private and what is public in society’s eyes.

The Internet has become the way that people chronicle their lives. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other social networking websites allow people to upload their life to the web and share the information with anyone who cares to look. Specifically, the current generation of middle school and high school students has grown up knowing only this virtual world. For these teenagers anything that happens in their life is Facebook worthy despite the fact that the same life event may have once been considered private. They’re a generation that has grown up without privacy. Not only has the Internet allowed people to share every aspect of their lives with the world, but it has also allowed for people to be able to find whatever information they want to about a person. There is no way to pick and choose who sees personal information on the Internet. The information is private if it’s not online and it’s public if it is online. There are no other choices with the Internet.

A friend pointed out to me recently that now when people say they’re going to a separate room to gain privacy from people, they really gain no privacy at all. They go into that separate room and go on Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, etc. They text and e-mail with people. There really is no way to escape communication at this point unless you make the decision to turn off your cell phone and all access to social media and e-mail. To gain privacy now almost means shutting yourself off from the world.

Cell phones have altered personal communication. People no longer have personal conversations only face to face. People now use text messaging to have all sorts of conversations with people. By taking the personal aspect of face-to-face conversations out of the equation people oftentimes are more inclined to ask questions that invade someone else’s privacy. Without the instant physical repercussions to invading another person’s privacy people feel that there is less risk to get involved in other people’s business and ask overly personal questions.

I think the biggest problem with privacy is not how much of it has been lost, but how its being lost and how many people don’t understand the repercussions of putting information out there on the web. Private information can be leaked instantly and never again can it be recalled. Think of Beyonce and the pictures from her Superbowl performance; when she asked that they be removed form the Internet people instead photoshopped them in different weird ways. People have thrown caution a bit too much to the wind and damage themselves permanently by putting overly personal and oftentimes inappropriate information on the web. Do you really want to be like the people that Ellen Degeneres called out on her shows for the strange pictures they posted online. Think of the embarassment.

It’s ok to use social media as a way to chronicle and share good memories but discretion is something that should be kept in mind. When putting something online think to yourself ‘Will this at any time become something that I either find incredibly embarrassing and or could negatively affect someone’s opinion of me?’ If the answer is yes then don’t post it.

My son, be attentive to my Wisdom [godly Wisdom learned by actual and costly experience], and incline your ear to my understanding [of what is becoming and prudent for you], That you may exercise proper discrimination and discretion and your lips may guard and keep knowledge and the wise answer [to temptation]. ~Proverbs 5:1-2 AMP

“Experience is the best teacher. As long as it’s someone else’s experience.” ~Anonymous

Someone meant that quip to be a joke, but it’s actually a Biblical concept. In Proverbs 5, the Holy Spirit writes through Solomon that you can, and should, learn from someone else’s “actual and costly experience.” But whose?

The four gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — tell some of the story of Jesus’ life. Little is recorded about his years before public ministry. But the scriptures make it clear that although he faced every temptation possible, he lived without once disobeying God. You’ll never be completely without sin, as Jesus is. But can you learn from his example?

This passage in Proverbs 5 encourages you to pay careful attention to God’s interpretation of how you should live. What does your heavenly father say is appropriate for you? What are your boundaries? The answers to these important questions are found in the Bible.

The goal of learning from the experience of others, according to verse two? Two things:

A life characterized by discretion. The word “discretion” can be defined as the ability to decide responsibly or judge on your own. Practicing discretion, you will establish a track record of godly choices.

A mind ready to defeat temptation. Everyone faces temptation to disobey God. As you acquire knowledge of godly attitudes and learn from the examples of others, you will be prepared in advance with the wise, godly, appropriate answer to the next temptation you face.

Jesus Christ modeled these two life behaviors perfectly. Consider how he responded to temptation in Matthew 4:1-11:

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.’”

Then the devil took Him into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written,

‘He will command His angels concerning You’;

and

‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took Him to a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only.’” Then the devil left Him; and behold, angels came and began to minister to Him.

Are you prepared to face temptation today? Keep studying the living, active word of God. It’s the sword of the Spirit, and your best weapon against temptation.
