Here’s an article that addresses the problems of the families of mentally ill people. Many of us live our lives quietly dealing with a relative or loved one who suffers and struggles daily. This article shows that finally the world is starting to take note and there are successful people willing to open up and talk about mental health issues in their lives.

Glen Close was the most recent example I can think of when she openly and candidly spoke of the plight of her bipolar sister and the effect the illness has had, not only on her sister, but on the entire family.

It’s really great to see a publication as well read and Women’s Day addressing mental health issues and the family. I applaud them for their willingness to address such a subject.

Please read the article and listen to the interview. Read all the pertinent articles and let me know how you feel about this recent change in the media. Is it for the good or is it bad?

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Caring for a sick family member is never easy, but when the disease at hand is a mental illness, coping can be especially difficult. That’s because many people are still embarrassed or afraid to discuss mental health with friends and even doctors. As a result the stigma isn’t just painful; it can delay proper diagnosis and treatment, making it hard on both the patient and their close family members who want to help but don’t know how.

Fortunately, a number of well-known people are speaking up and spreading the word about these issues in an effort to get you talking about them, too. Recently, actress Debi Mazar (of Entourage and Dancing With the Stars fame), has joined this group, by partnering with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca’s campaing, Speak and Be Heard… Living With Bipolar Depression. A close relative of Debi’s suffered for years before getting the right diagnosis for bipolar disorder. Today, thankfully, he’s being treated and doing really well—but she doesn’t want anyone else to struggle the way her family did. You can learn more about this campaign at facingbipolar.com

about a month ago (31 October) i started to write a new post publicly committing to join in NaNoWriM

about a month ago (31 October) i started to write a new post publicly committing to join in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) for the month of November. After a paragraph was finished I got distracted by who knows what and never finished the post. I also never participated in the month long novel writing challenge, wherein the challenge is to write a 50,000 word novel in 30 days. do i regret this? yes-and-no. i think this would have been good for me, i have wanted to write a novel, but have a hard time committing to things and had a lot of school work during November. but now, i am going to publicly announce my prospective commitment.

i know i have mentioned giving up meat before, becoming a vegetarian, reducing our negative impact on this place we call home. the reasons for which i advocate these things is not because i believe humans are the enemy, it’s because i believe we could live our lives in a wholistic way and they could be better: mentally, physically, psychologically, socially (etc.) and this is why i (and hopefully my parents) am/are doing the “go dairy free” challenge. the challenge is 10 days with no dairy-no cheese, no yogurt, no milk, no ice cream, no chocolate, etc.-unless it has some sort of dairy substitute.

for me this is not an animal rights issue, it is a health issue. milk is one of the most common food allergens in the western world. lactose intolerance is very common, and some people may not even realize that milk is the problem for digestive problems. we are the only species to continue to drink milk after weaning. there are greater chances to having diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and ironically osteoporosis, which all but osteoporosis runs in my family. milk is not the only place you can find calcium, to name a few you can get calcium from soy milk, asparagus, baked beans, green beans, sesame seeds, almond butter, oranges, etc. the milk we drink from the stores is from a cow no longer with a calf that needs milk. in most scenarios the cows are given rBGH(recombinant Bovine Growth Hormone) which stimulates the production of the IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor) hormone which helps produce milk. (the science of it.)

really, who knows what will happen if i give up milk. maybe my allergies will get better, or maybe i won’t have heartburn anymore. maybe nothing will happen, but with all of the potential side effects and the knowledge of the prospective health benefits, why not try it.

i haven’t decided when i’m going to start, but i want to do it with my family, so whenever they are on the same page-hopefully before christmas.

“I need more drugs because I had a heart attack yesterday and in my monumental pain I flushed my Percocet down the toilet.”

I stare.

AWwww, MAN, I don't know WHAT happened, man.

“No really. I’m serious. I don’t know what’s going on with my heart and I accidentally flushed my drugs down the toilet when it was causing me, like, serious pain. I REALLY need some more. I’m in like 24/10 pain.”

“That’s a pretty strange fraction.”

“Well, that’s how bad it is.”

I hope my eyes are at least a little more than half-closed, “Dude. That’s your excuse? Really? That’s the best you have for me? Flushed?” My ever-blindingly cheerful mood deflates a bit.

“Well, it was the case manager who told me to come to you for more Percocet. I tode her Dr. SW101 isn’t cool with narcs, so I figured you wouldn’t go for it, but she told me to try.”

“So, the NURSE made you do it?”

“No…well (looks hopefully at me), uh, maybe?”

Dr. SW101 set me UP!

He did utter one truth, I’m not cool with writing for unfathomable doses of highly-addictive, mind-altering substances that have outrageous street value and regularly cause the utter destruction of families, careers and lives.

He’s right. I’m not cool with that.

Sometimes it feels like I’m just sitting in my clinic handing out bullets…each one stamped with “If this causes a disaster of any kind, please blame Dr. SW101. His bank account number is 7749220485, and you can find his children at 13 XX street, usually after 6pm. Punish him accordingly for making such a mockery of his Doctor’s Oath, society, God, the memory of Elvis, Stonehenge, Hello Kitty, Gooeyducks..and everything else even remotely sacred to humanity.”

But I’m used to that. I’m used to being the candy man. What I’m NOT used to, is being taken for so dimwitted that the medical equivalent of ‘the dog ate my homework’ excuse might work on me.

“You’re really using THAT one on me?”

“Look man,” (whips out his Blackberry Smartphone, provided free of charge by the Army to help with his healing), “I got pictures of the pills in the toilet.”

I decline the visual. Don’t even need it.

“You’d need to pin my face to a cork-board with something in the range of 34,000 thumbtacks to talk me into giving you more narcotics with that lame excuse.” I say. What I DON’T say is that aside from fighting the good fight against blatant drug addicts (I do take care of true heroes; he’s not one of them), I’m just flat-out annoyed at the excuse.

“Frankly, you’re story is miserable. Put in a little work, and you might score a few hits out of me for creativity. I’ve been known to drop a few Vikes on someone just to tribute their impeccible style alone.”

“Style?”

“Yeah, you know, do some deep-thinking before you try get me to double your daily horse-halting, blue whale-euthanizing, brontosaurus-stupefying doses of addictive opiates.”

“Liiike, a better story?”

“Yep. I loovvve fiction.”

“Um, like what?”

“The doc I’m replacing was partial to “I washed ‘em in my uniform”, so I’d say that’s a little, uh faded haha no pun intended *aHEM*, sorry, not making light of your “pain” or whatever, just a little side-joke for this glorious Army morning. Anyway, where was I?”

“You were helping me come up with a story to score more narcs out of you.”

“Oh YEAH. Thanks! Let’s see, maybe I can help you….next time, try something along the lines of:

They're real. Seriously.

After a valiant but ultimately tragic battle, a saber-tooth tiger ripped your friend’s head off. In desperation, you heroically dispatched said wildcat with your bare hands (careful with the back). Then, without pausing to consider yourself, you gave him your ENTIRE BOTTLE of pills strong enough to drive the entire population of Gambia into rehab.

Unfortunately, when he swallowed them – since his head was removed from his body – your pills just dropped out on the ground, all slimy and spit-covered and quickly dissolved. Thinking fastly, you propped his body up and then held his head over what you figured was the esophagus part of your life-long friend’s neck so the remaining few pills – “Damn you, Johnny, swallow! – dropped out and settled into one of his neck-tubes, hopefully not the trachea. Then you got him to a local ER, where they skillfully re-attached his head.

ONLY THEN, after your friend was recovering (he just might pull through, snif), did you think of yourself, realizing that you were, in fact, out of drugs for your endless back pain and heart attacks which you’ve been suffering from since you were born, 20 years ago.”

“That would work?”

“No. But honestly, that story has more credibility than, ‘I flushed ‘em, brah, gimme some more.”

The next 4 entries in this blog will contain links to recent stories about macular disease. So many items have come through that I will be dividing them into 4 sections, each as a separate entry.

The subject matter of these will be…

Charles Bonnet Syndrome, the condition where people with sight loss experience visual hallucinations

Living with Macular Degeneration, including currently available treatments, supplements, techniques for getting through your day

Research – including treatments that are not yet available generally to the public

Stem Cells – this subject is so prominent, it really had to be in its own blog entry. While some sorts of stem cell research worry some people ethically, they will be with us as viable treatments sooner or later. I have included material that explores different points of view.

<pOn, then, with something of a macular degeneration bonanza!

Millions of people die every year due to
Cancer is one of the most common diseases of each
one is exposed to one of us. In general, a cancer
is a group of diseases characterized by an alarming rate
The growth of abnormal cells in the body. The disease can
almost all parts of the body and
Commonaffects the lungs. Carcinogens
Chemicals are everywhere, especially in air,
we breathe, so that the lungs are vulnerable to fatal for some
Diseases. A rare form of cancer that affects the lungs, is
Mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma has become famous only for their
Related to exposure to asbestos, a fibrous mineral form
Magnesium fire, the chemistry of silicates
Filters, electrical insulation and others. Most
Patientsbeen diagnosed with mesothelioma
often exposed to asbestos. These are the people who work
construction sites, shipyards, insulators, and policy makers
similar places. Typically, the fibers that breathe impure
asbestos in the air.

It should be noted that about 30-50 per cent of
Mesothelioma patients who have no exposure to
Asbestos, which led to the hypothesis that asbestos
It may not be the sole cause ofMesothelioma. N.
Mesothelioma some patients, this small
Exposure to asbestos, but had contracted the disease.
Activities such as washing the clothes of a person
been exposed to asbestos to put another person at high
The risk of cancer mesothelioma. The disease takes years
develop, so a person can be exposed to asbestos
Mesothelioma is diagnosed only after 20-50 years
exposure.

Asother forms of cancer, mesothelioma, is called
after the party is affected by the disease. In
In mesothelioma, malignant cells are found in
the mesothelium, a protective bag, cover different
internal organs. This function produces a protective pouch fluid
that lubricates the organs that allow them to move. They
let the beating heart and the expanding and
Contracting lung cancer, for example. In particular,
Mesotheliomaaffects the lining of the lungs and chest
Cavity. There are also some cases of food
Abdomen (peritoneum) is a concern. Both
The types of cancer called pleural mesothelioma
Mesothelioma (affecting the lungs) and peritoneal dialysis
Mesothelioma (stomach).

Pleural mesothelioma symptoms, including wheezing,
Persistent cough, weight loss, fever and chest
Pain. Moreover,Peritoneal mesothelioma in May
inflammation and abdominal pain and weight
Loss. In the early stages of mesothelioma,
The symptoms are nonspecific, this is not a disease
immediately detected. The symptoms are often
Confused as a sign of pneumonia. There are cases of
the patient shows no signs of this deadly
Cancer.

If a patient has any of the symptoms above, will
immediately consult a doctor for help. Normally, a
X-ray is necessary for changes in the clear
the lungs (if any) of pleural mesothelioma.
Analysis of mesothelioma cancer among construction
fluid between the pleura covering the chest wall
and diaphragm. Under normal conditions, the
Mesothelial cells produce a liquid
sufficient to lubricate the area between the chest wall
andLung.

The possibility of treating a patient mesothelioma
depends on the degree or stage of disease and
Disease situation. Also, the person's age
and how it reacts to treatment and drugs may
say if you can survive cancer or not.
In general, the choice for the treatment of the patient are:
Surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy and cancer
Drugs.

With only a few weeks to go for the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change, PM Manmohan Singh gave

With only a few weeks to go for the Copenhagen Conference on Climate Change, PM Manmohan Singh gave the assurance: “We are committed to ambitious and time-bound outcomes that will increase energy efficiency of our economy, the share of clean energy including nuclear power in our energy mix, and our forest cover.” But he added, “We will do more if there is global support in terms of financial resources and technology transfer.” This is the bone of contention in the case of developing countries meeting emission standards. Hunger, poverty and disease are more urgent problems for developing countries like India to tackle than emission norms. Therefore, India’s stand has been to do more on climate change if developed nations lend a helping hand by way of financial support and technology.

India-US agree on Climate Change

The reason that climate change effects arise from the global stock of carbon, the distribution across countries of their contributions to that stock, including the initial stock, is totally irrelevant from the perspective of efficiency. Again since only total emissions of each country and hence of all countries together add to the global stock of carbon, whether the same total emissions of a country is the result of low per capita emission multiplied by a large population or vice versa is again irrelevant from the perspective of efficiency.

Population policy choices do affect the welfare of the current and future populations. Any trade-off between larger population and lower emissions or vice-versa would naturally fall under considerations of inter-generational equity within nations and deep philosophical issues are involved in doing so. National welfare becomes the focus of all national policy choices, including population policies, which are reflected through their effects on national welfare in any international agreement that reflects equity consideration across countries appropriately. Thus, from the perspective of international agreement, only aggregate and not per capita emissions are relevant.

China and India are sitting on vast stocks of coal, which push the amount of their emissions above those of older polluters in the west. Forests offer untold wealth to millions in poverty in Indonesia and Brazil, if only trees can be chopped down, and at the very top of the carbon food chain sit western consumers unwilling to part with easy luxuries like cheap weekend flights and two cars. When they stop buying cars or other durables, our economies grind to a halt. The developed world has become accustomed to ever-increasing levels of material consumption. Cutting carbon emissions is therefore inextricably linked with wider questions of the pressure on all natural resources, land and water.

This is a task that only governments can undertake and it is not as if they have not already had enough time to do it. The meeting that created the Kyoto protocol has convened in 10 other countries and cities since. The immensity of the task ahead is probably more apparent to world leaders than it was a decade ago. But time is running out. To prevent the global average temperature from increasing by more than 2C, there will need to be a global cut in emissions within the next five years or so.

Therefore, to reach these reduced levels a country like India needs to use green technology on substantial scale. This is not possible unless the developed countries share their know-how and technology so that India can work towards a cleaner, greener country. However, the need for proactive action from the national and state governments is needed to tackle the problem of climate change. In cities like Kolkata, where auto rickshaws blatantly violate pollution norms and the government dithers on bringing them to book, the road ahead seems treacherous. There should also be a consensus among nations at Copenhagen that developing countries receive the transfer of ‘green technology’ at reduced prices so that they can manage their emissions more efficiently. The more time the world takes to reach a legally binding target the more it will become difficult to meet the target of 2020. Thus, the clarion call is to act fast and act decisively.

However, the argument that the per capita emission levels as the basis for binding emission cuts is of no use is apparently rational but politically loaded. In that sense, the pragmatic approach will still involve a significant cost to developed nations, but will help make some headway in saving the earth from global warming.

However, the disparities in levels of per capita consumption and therefore, emissions, will not go away – unless the entire world commits itself to an unequal international order forever which does not look likely in near future.

If a Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolf has a daily to-do list, it may look like this:1.) Avoid hunters, 2.) Maintain territory, 3.) Find prey, 4.) Get de-wormed.

Yes, de-wormed.

According to a new study out in the October issue of the Journal of Wildlife Diseases, three-millimeter-long tapeworms known as Echinococcus granulosus, are documented for the first time in gray wolves in Idaho and Montana. And the authors didn’t just find a few tapeworms here and there… turns out that of 123 wolf intestines sampled, 62 percent of the Idaho gray wolves and 63 percent of the Montana gray wolves were positive. (Ew!) The researchers wrote: “The detection of thousands of tapeworms per wolf was a common finding.” (Again… Ew!!) This leads to the interpretation that the E. granulosus parasite rate is fairly widespread and established in the Northern Rocky Mountain wolves.

The tapeworms themselves are not new. Gray wolves in Canada and Alaska are known to be infected with them. In fact, previous studies indicate that a 14 to 72 percent infection rate is normal. But the study authors report that this is the first time that a specific biotype of E. granulosus has been detected in not only wolves of Idaho and Montana, but also wild herbivores. The parasite needs both types of animals to complete its life cycle.

Global distribution of E. granulosus, shown in black. (Click to visit the source site, Stanford Univ.)

The two biotypes of North American E. granulosus are known as “northern” and “domestic.” And up till now, the northern biotype has not been reported in any wild species in Idaho or Montana — but this is the type they found in the Yellowstone gray wolves. The northern biotype needs wild cervids as an intermediate host (deer, elk, moose and caribou), but wolves are it’s main squeeze. The domestic biotype also uses wild ungulates as an intermediate host (it prefers sheep), but dogs are it’s main squeeze.

It is fair to ask whether the reintroduced canids picked them up from dining on already-infected wild prey in the lower 48 states. It’s truly unclear where the worms came from — were they already here, but not documented? Here is what they do know: 1.) the tapeworm biotype matches what is known to occur in northern latitudes of N. America ; 2.) the percentage of the infected population appears, upon the first sample, to match the known infection rate in Canada and Alaska for gray wolves.

Interestingly, the researchers also document finding E. granulosus in elk and mule deer in the study states, two of the top menu items for any self-respecting gray wolf. The authors concede it is nearly impossible to pin point the worm’s origins:

“It is unknown whether the parasite was introduced into Idaho, USA, and southwestern Montana, USA, with the importation of wolves from Alberta, Canada, or British Columbia, Canada, into Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA, and central Idaho, USA, in 1995 and 1996, or whether the parasite has always been present in other carnivore hosts, and wolves became a new definitive host.”

Is this a simple case of an absence of data, or is this an emerging pathogen in the lower 48? The fact that our reintroduced wolves have the northern biotype would appear to lean toward an interpretation that the Yellowstone wolves arrived with the tapeworms. But part of the reintroduction management measures included de-worming the candidate wolves. The authors suggest that gray wolves which naturally recolonized parts of Montana from British Columbia could have brought the tapeworms with them, and supplanted them in to the wild herbivores which then passed them on to the reintroduced wolves.

The good news is that the northern biotype poses a low threat to humans, if they were to ingest the worms. But it may pose a threat to domestic dogs, which can serve as the host. Something to be on the lookout for if you are a dog owner living near known wolf territories in these two study states.

Bottom line, if you are a tapeworm, wolves just may be your mother lode of a sugar mama… Think about it, they bring you plenty of nutritiously dense food, plus they travel long distances and are biological dispersers so they can deposit you in a wide range of new environments. Not a bad lifestyle for a three-millimeter long wriggly bit of tissue that can’t do these things on its own.

Congenital heart disease is a risk factor in scuba diving, but this shouldn’t stop prospective

Congenital heart disease is a risk factor in scuba diving, but this shouldn’t stop prospective divers from pursuing heart-pounding underwater action. If you were to live life once, would you allow a medical condition to get in the way of extreme adventure? Nevertheless, a sufferer will have to take the necessary precautions should he decide to get into the extreme sport despite the risk profile of a congenital heart disease. The article will briefly discuss pertinent risks and the mitigating factors necessary to contend with the physical limits of this cardiovascular condition.

Physical Strain. Congenital heart disease patients are often advised to limit the pursuit of physically-straining activities and avert stressful circumstances as well. Since scuba diving is a strenuous sport, a sufferer will likely be advised to undergo extensive physical training weeks (or preferably months) before the scheduled dive in order to be in tip-top shape for the activity. But for your safety, be sure to get your health care provider involved in every step of the way.

History of Surgical Procedure. If you’ve had undergone surgery before, you might want to think twice before engaging in a dive. Some chest surgery scars can restrict air flow, which will prove to be fatal when scuba diving. Consult your doctor for the likelihood of surgical scars to heighten related risks (as if having heart ailments isn’t risky enough), should you decide to pursue scuba diving nonetheless.

Use of Artificial Pacemaker. Recreational diving depths can extend to as much as 40 meters. However, pacemakers could only sustain around 10 to 30 meters of underwater pressure. Therefore as a precautionary measure, confirm pertinent details with the manufacturer and determine exactly how much pressure your pacemaker can tolerate before proceeding with the dive.

Heeding Doctor’s Advice. You can choose to conform with physician’s advice or just follow your heart’s desire and go scuba diving despite the looming risk of injury or even death. Be rest assured that your attending physician only wants what’s best for you. But if you happen to be dissatisfied with the medical practitioner’s recommendations, then seek for a second and then third opinion. And if these happen to convey similar recommendations, for your sake, please take heed and do not jeopardize your health or put your life on the line.

Nothing should ever stop you from living life to the fullest. And if you (and your doctor-LISTEN TO HIM, OK?) are unanimously convinced that you are physically fit to engage in any scuba diving activity, then go for it. And when you do, you might want to be geared up with top of the line scuba equipment such as an Aeris Coral Buoyancy Compensator with Air Link and a pair of Aeris Mako Open Heel Fins [http://www.scubasuppliers.com/site/1408308/product/50.30XX] to make your scuba diving trip much easier, safer and even more comfortable.
