Wellity wellity.

Hard to put into words how well Saturday’s gig at Odessa went.

A real party atmosphere with some great friends and some new faces.

Mozzy Green were awesome, and a big thanks goes to James Batsford from Stroll On. His DJ set kept them people on their feet!

Bit of a whirlwind for me, but our little swaree back at RW Towers was made all the more sweet by the Krakatoa boys popping over from their final gig supporting Alabama 3.

We were all just happy that Josh got his watch back.

As you can imagine, yesterday was a complete write off.

So today finds us starting to ease back on the accelerator and wrap up warm for Christmas.

There’s just the small matter of finishing the best album of 2010….

November 20th, 2009

One day to go!

Then we wrap up a great couple of weeks since the EP release with a homecoming celebration in Dublin.

In case you’ve not heard, it’s at the Odessa Club this Saturday. Music kicks off at 8pm with support form fellow 360′ers Mozzy Green.

Come early – they’re ace!

We’ve also got Stroll On providing a DJ set after we tear the roof off the fucker, so stick around for a bop too!

It’s only €5.

Which means that the worst that could happen is you might have to skip that pointless 3am kebab on the way home.

And without wanting to sound conceited, I think we’re a little more fulfilling and enjoyable than Grade Z dog meat and a morning after spent pebble dashing the toilet.

No?

Good.

See you Saturday then.

Hey guys!

Firstly, some housekeeping…

The iTunes issue has been resolved – so pop over to the iTunes Store and pick up the Secrecy & Sex EP!

New Band Downstairs is up too! See us listen (and react!) to our session for The Paul McLoone Show on Today FM – and Chris & Niall discuss guitars (amongst other things..!).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYn4DQQ95g8

In addition you can catch an exclusive performance of Advertising Heroin for the very good people at Tuntribe in London (http://www.tunetribe.com) – interview on the way too, so be sure to check back!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPDd8gOy_6g

Meanwhile over at Indie Bands Blog, we are the Buzz Aldrin to (good friends and label mates) Mono Stereo’s Neil Armstrong!

http://www.indiebandsblog.com/european-bands/swedish-bands/band-of-the-week-14th-november-2009

Now…

Wanna here about London…..??!!

I’m writing a little late after the fact, as I took a little longer than the boys to get back to Dublin (Alice In Chains. Kentish Town Forum. ‘Nuff said.).

We touched ground in Gatwick on Thursday morning in jovial mood. The fruition of the last couple of month’s hard work was merely a couple of hours away.

With the Secrecy & Sex EP cast out into the ether, we had the small matter of a hat trick of shows in London town.

First up, Peter Parker’s Rock & Roll Club for an intimate little gig in the company of friends, fans and various interested industry parties. Muchas Kudos to Dimitri our sound engineer. A true professional who wrangled the best sound we could have ever wished for from a PA system that, in all honesty, seemed like an afterthought.

First night jitters were unarticulated – but I definitely had a butterfly or two rattling around in me.

This wasn’t aided by a last minute substitution of my rig’s (ahem) “compromised” amplifier.

These thing are sent to try us….

With adrenelin pumping, we kicked the gig out of the park. The current set feels unbelievably strong at the moment.

After much back patting, we began our cross town commute to dump our bags / guitars at my girlfriend’s place and leg it over to Proud Galleries in Camden to catch the tail end of Mono Stereo’s set.

We succeeded in one of those endevours (sorry Monos..!!).

Friday began with us having a couple of meetings during the day, and our little sit down with Tunetribe. All lovely and lovable people.

Then onto our show at The Fly on New Oxford Street…

Unfortunately this cool, little venue is facing the chop.

Something to do with trains and the 2012 Olympics.

I wasn’t really paying attention, to be honest.

The set was great and, strangely enough, Niall breaking a string second song in was the best thing that could have happened.

The line up was fairly tight, so we couldn’t afford to take time out to re-string Niall’s white Mexican Strat.

So we appealed to our fellow musicians for a dig out.

“Anyone got a spare guitar…?”

“Yeah, sure, mate.”

Cue a quick rummage in a gig bag to produce….

A white Mexican Strat.

Fucking hilarious.

The night got better, as the owner of this doppelganger was part of what became Our New Favourite Band.

The Meat Eating Orchids (http://www.myspace.com/themeateatingorchids)

The most fun I’ve seen on stage in years.

Don’t drink your lava lamp.

Sound advice.

Cheers boys. You are kings among (topless) men.

Post gig we boogied on over to meet our Mono Stereo pals who had invited us to a birthday party across town.

It was an amazingly funky apartment and everyone made us feel very welcome – they even stroked our egos enough for us to perform an impromtu acousitc set.

Great night of unexpected highlights. Roll on Saturday.

Saturday.

Ireland V France.

Future London Underground (FLU) night at Tommy Flynn’s.

Ridiculously extended post gig party.

You already know what Saturday is.

You know what happened at the match.

You may not have been at the gig, but all that needs to be said is that it was (for the four of us, at the very least) our best ever (seems to be habit forming at Tommy Flynn’s).

The post gig party is indiscribable and, to be honest, a little patchy memory wise…

All that remains is to thank all of those who went above the call of duty over the weekend.

Naomi (who’s getting metioned more than the band in this blog it seems) for duvets, blankets, party space and all round cheerleader coralling.

Tom for similar bed providing skills, uncompromising political (and Juliet..!) debate and keeping the Trad flame alive.

Ben Carrigan for cymbals and perfect timimg that only a drummer of his great skill can provide.

Dimitri for engineering services described above…!

Guy for his impromtu roadie services.

Sam from The Meat Eating Orchids for exactly-the-same-guitar belly laugh.

Mono Stereo for being the hosts with most-ness.

Dan Fatel (FLU) for an amazing night at Flynn’s.

Dan, Adam, Mark for all the help with the last minute Fly gig.

Gillian Baxter for the bullshit extraction.

James Batsford for the cross into the box on Thursday night.

Danny (#2) Payne for all round geezer-ness and PR mastery.

Danny (#1) Sperling our manager, who’s contribution is so endless, legion, universal and all encompassing that this is, ironically, the only sentence he’s getting.

And finally, Bon Jovi for waking up Shavoune Mills.

Disko.

Diezgan ātri izstaigāju parku, tomēr, tesla coils a.k.a “Zibens gaisma” pievērsa manu uzmanību, pie tā pavadīju kādas 15 minūtes, pēc tam tesla coils nobeidzās.

We made it LOL!

November 3rd, 2009

Hi all.

Had a bit of an oul’ larf on Sunday night.

We were the guests of the very cool Rob and Kev, who present the excellent Watergate Tapes show on Dublin’s NEAR 90.3 FM

Rob and Kev had been very hospitible in providing some conversation lubrication and I had, in kind, brought two massive bags of sugary delights (the great post-Halloween sell off had begun in ernest at my local Spar). All that remained was to let the airwaves chime with the incredibly articulate and thought provoking views of Dublin’s wittiest musical rogues.

There were a couple of factors, however, that meant our collective reservoir of intellect wasn’t quite waist deep that night.

It was Doug’s birthday the night before and the b-day boy was feeling more than a little fragile, for obvious reasons. Niall was battling a particularly prolonged head cold and Chris was still to catch up on his sleep after a weekend jaunt to Berlin.

This left only one person to be deferred to and take the reigns as the mouthy opinionated one.

As if I needed ANY of the above circumstances to assume that role.

The on-air banter was fairly tame to begin with :

“Why did you pick this tune?” “When’s the EP coming out?”

All very standard and proper radio show discourse.

Then the Alcohol / Sugar Speed Ball kicked in and by the end of it we (by which I mean me) had covered such wide ranging topics as Boy George’s method of rent boy imprisonment, the Roman Polanski “Oscar Win vs. Pedo Dilemma” and how fantasitc our sleepy, bed time masturbation would be when we all got home after the show.

I may have also intimated that I would commit infanitcide, unless we got the number of people watching us on the station’s webcam up from four to five.

You will be delighted to know (as am I) that we’ll have a recording of the show to present for posterity (and ridicule) in the coming weeks.

I’m also sure that our new fly-on-the-wall Balcony TV person, Ciara (she’s great!) will have some choice video cuts before then.

So thanks agian Rob and Kev! You’re legends!

Check out their show online, peeps….!

Hello all.

Realised the other day that I’ve been really slack (whoops!) on posting the latest episodes of The Band Downstairs.

For the uninitiated, The Band Downstairs comes from the good people at BALCONY TV who are following us around like love sick puppies as we record the new album. They also feature whatever strange and beautiful Wives related weirdness pops up.

October 10th, 2009

Good eve to you Ladies and Germs.

After another all too brief visit from She-Who-Is-Known-As-Pleasure-In-Hebrew, I’m now alone and talking to you lot.

Naomi went this morning, but the Ireland v Italy World Cup qualifier is on in an hour, so that will prove a nail biting distraction until the slightly sozzled Skype call later.

Had a cool couple of days. It was an anniversary of sorts on Thursday; a year ago since we clapped eyes on each other. The Wives were on a via-London commute from an In The City gig in Manchester to Popkomm in Berlin, when Cupid decided to steal my hand luggage. This led to a series of events that culminated in a twenty minute first meeting/exchange of email/phone numbers at a bar in Camden.

I bought her a drink.

This may have gone a long way.

I say it was an anniversary of sorts, because I didn’t drunkenly say “D’ya wanner go <hic> steady, sugar..?” until about a month later.

In a basement.

In Belgium.

As luck would have it, this year, Cupid’s Kleptomania Day fell on the same night that, former Guns ‘N’ Roses bassplayer, Duff McKagan’s new band Loaded were playing at The Academy in Dublin. As both of us are massive G’N’R fans, it was a rockin’ serendipity.

Things got a little more exciting when we deciced to avail of getting “meet and greet” passes from the merchandise stand. It wasn’t extortionate but that was irrelevant anyway, as capping off a killer gig with meeting one of your heroes isn’t a bad way to spend a chilly night in Dublin.

I know in my last blog I warned of the dangers of hero meetings. Simply put, Duff balanced the karmic scales in one friendly, firm handshake.

It could have been Jon Snow a couple of weeks ago.

But that’s how the cosmos operates, I guess.

Duff was really cool; and, to his credit, gave everyone as much time as he could given the volume of folks vying for his attention.

The rest of the band were great too and it was little easier to have a bit of a chinwag as their fearless leader was love-mobbed. Even got to exchange picks with Jeff Rouse, the bass player, which was cool.

I’m gonna use his at a gig tomorrow at X Music’s first birthday.

I’m pretty sure mine’s on the floor of the Birmingham Academy at the moment.

Great night.

Great band.

Great little lady.

Uh oh, kick off’s in about twenty minutes…

Must dash.

Ninety minutes of a love / hate relationship with the Irish back four awaits…

September 30th, 2009 They say you should never meet your heroes. Sound advice. Unless they happen to

September 30th, 2009

They say you should never meet your heroes.

Sound advice.

Unless they happen to be firemen.

To be honest, I never actually thought it was a given. And anyway I know from experience it’s not; because <brag alert> Joe Strummer was the perfect gent.

Anyway, last weekend I found myself at a gig I’d been looking forward to all year – Gang Of Four at The Forum in KentishTown. The reason it was so anticipated was that I had been promised to be put on the door months ago, as my girlfriend is mates with the manager / promoter there (thanks Dan, I owe you several beers at this stage).

Dan had already sorted me and Naomi with a couple of really cool festival tickets over the summer, but I’d not yet been to The Forum this year (I did see Living Color there about eight years ago).

I had been eyeballing the Gang Of Four show since about March; and the fact it was the 30th anniversary of their debut Entertainment! (stone cold classic – GET IT NOW), I was excited to say the least.

Just to put in context how much this band (who released their first album the same year I was born, bear in mind) means to me, here’s a little rock and roll history.

Obviously I wasn’t around for the original release; but for a band of their time, they’re probably the single biggest influence on the group who’s album became the reason I picked up a bass in the first place.

That reason was Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik.

That album blew my head open. It introduced me not just to the force of nature that is the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but also to Rick Rubin’s career-high producing Midas touch (which still continues to this day) and the sublime talents of engineer / mixer Brendan O’Brien – another superlative producer in his own right.

The songs, the incredible performances and personalities coupled with the Zeppelin-esque recording process, all resulted in my favourite album of all time and a determination that I wanted to play music until I die.

“How does this relate to Gang Of Four?” I hear you yawn.

Well, Flea in particular, has said the original sound of the Chili Peppers was primarily influenced by Leeds’ punk-funk rogues. So much so that they got Gang Of Four axe-man, Andy Gill, to produce their first album.

Without wanting to put too fine a point on it – he made a bollocks of that album.

To be fair, it was never going to be Blood Sugar Sex Magik; but it could have easily been an underground classic.

There were a few factors involved also – last minute line up changes, the band’s inexperience, personality clashes etc.

Gill’s assertion that he “didn’t know what (he) was doing” on the Gang Of Four’s earlier albums probably didn’t lift the bands confidence either. One story, that the band left a pizza box (with a shit in it) on the mixing desk, speaks volumes.

“Typical.” was Gill’s only response to the incident, apparently.

So, based on this evidence, I have only myself to blame that I did not heed to the potential perils of hero contact.

The fact that the hero I approached on this occasion was also Andy Gill, gives me the distinct impression that I have all the foresight of a Darwin Award winner.

The after show exchange went something like this….

“Hey Andy. Sorry to bother you. Amazing gig. Thanks so much.”

“Are you Jurgen?”

“Erm, no…”

“What’s your name?”

“Niall.”

“Sorry, what? Jurgen..?”

“Uh, no, it’s Niall.”

What followed was Gill (the man whom I called a legend, from the crowd, not half an hour previous) silently turning his back and offering me the limpest, lamest, reverse reach-around handshake in the history of uncomfortablism.

Maybe if I had introduced myself by my nickname (“Disko..? Really..?”), or indeed pretended to be this Jurgen individual, my interaction may have lasted more than five seconds.

Or maybe Andy Gill is just an uppity rude fuckwit.

Naomi and my now deflated self left soon after – but not before I launched into an expletive ridden tirade as to why the original rhythm section were absent from the current line-up (my reasoning mostly centered around Andy Gill’s fuckwit credentials, as I’m sure you can imagine).

God bless Naomi and her powers of rant absorption.

And thank god I hadn’t directed it at Gill himself.

To be honest, as I (soberly) write this, it’s not really as soul crushing as I had worked it up to be on the night. I think what stung was the sudden gear shift from elated post-gig booze brain to an abrupt, uninterested dismissing.

In fact, I now feel a little guilty about the Mark Chapman death-stare (and wink for some reason, according to Naomi) I threw him as I left the place.

Andy, if you’re reading this – don’t worry; I still love ya, soda pop.

But you’re no Joe Strummer, buddy.

Disko

X

Epilogue :

The next morning I found myself (still pissed) in the Italian deli next door to Naomi’s place.

She had very considerately woken me at half nine to go get a couple of paninis.

As I swayed bleary-eyed at the counter, I turned around and saw Channel Four News’ Jon Snow enter for a Sunday morning coffee with his paper (presumably just to make sure other journalists are still not as badass as himself).

Thoughts of the universe balancing out the bad karma visited upon me the night before swam round my brain; vying for position amongst slightly less celestial concerns about whether to get a Milka Bar on the way home.

“If there’s anyone in the world who’d love a slurred declaration of admiration at a quarter to ten on a Sunday morning - it’s TV’s Jon Snow!”, I reasoned to myself.

Thankfully, at this point my inner Lilac Milka Cow looked up wearily from its grazing and mooed :

September 11th, 2009

Huzzah!

‘Tis Friday; the weather is fine and I’m in spirits of the good variety.

Even my weekly guilty pleasure of sifting through the grot of a certain independent Irish (bit of a giveaway) newspaper’s Friday “music supplement” (sounds like something you’d buy in Holland & Barrett) doesn’t elicit my usual read-rage.

This may have something to do with the fact that my girlfriend Naomi is over from London at the minute and so far she’s treated me to Steak Of The Year and a trip to see “Inglourious Basterds”.

You do the math.

Next week we reconvene to The Crane Lane Institute Of Rock (as christened by my friend Ger McDonnell; who, all things being equal, will mix the album) and hopefuly we’ll “hit the ground running”, as Doug has predicted.

I think he’ll be proven right.

Right now I’ve got itchy fingers. As tracking the album (don’t get me wrong; it’s great fun) has taken precedent over our rehearsal / jam sessions, I’m missing the unpredictable, beautiful chaos of the band making a big noise in a small room.

But who am I to complain?

It’s the weekend.

Huzzah, indeed.

dziewczęcy duet Fan Death wykombinował sobie całkiem miły numer, który zapowiada nowy singiel ‘A Coin For The Well’ a w póżniejszej kolejności long dla Pharmacy Recordings. kawałek dobrze komponuje się z moim dzisiejszym mood, so… proponuję obejrzeć klip do końca.
