The God That Never Was”).

As one of the bands that originated the Melodic Death Metal genre, I was interested in hearing some

As one of the bands that originated the Melodic Death Metal genre, I was interested in hearing some Dismember even though my love for the genre has waned somewhat over the years.

Death Metal certainly doesn’t pull any punches, it contains exactly what’s on the box. Rapid fire riffs, growled vocals (well, closer to thrashy, shouted) and a very good display of musicianship and adherence to the genre.
Highlights include the very triumphant opening track, the born-and-bred-in-Gothenburg Misanthropic and the decidedly down-tempo Stillborn Ways which has a very Hypocrisy feel to it. Each track is solid and well structured; there is groove aplenty and die-hard fans of melodic death will not go away unpleased.

The low production quality on the album is very noticeable. Everything sounds quite fuzzy, and compared to the albums that similar bands were putting out at roughly the same time (i.e. In Flames’ Whoracle) it is frankly quite shoddy. For a genre that breeds tonechasers like no other, it is quite frustrating to be faced with such poor recording quality. The other major issue I have with the album is that it is nothing new. By the release of this album, Dismember was on their fourth release, and it does not feel like it takes the genre any further. I do not have enough knowledge of their previous albums to determine whether it was a progression for the band, but it is frustrating when everyone is producing exactly the same music.

Ultimately Death Metal, despite delivering exactly what it says on the cover did not impress me much. But that is most probably because I have become distanced from the melodic death metal genre; if you’re a die-hard fan, pick this one up!

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

A young transport worker strangled a teenage schoolgirl after having sex with her, dismembered her body, flushed her remains down a toilet and then dumped her head in the sea, the High Court heard.

Ting Kai-tai, 24, denies murdering Wong Ka-mui, 16, inside his Shek Kip Mei flat on April 27 last year.

In opening the case yesterday, the prosecution said Ting had told police he met the girl on the internet.

She was allegedly involved in compensated dating – a euphemism for sexual services. The night before they met, Ting had taken soft drugs in a disco and remained “very high” when he returned home, the court heard.

The next day he met up with Wong, who identified herself as “KiKi.”

They met at Sham Shui Po MTR station at 1pm and went to Ting’s flat in Shek Kip Mei.

After they had sex, Ting strangled Wong for one to two minutes before he started to feel dizzy, the court was told.

Wong weighed only about 36 kilograms, while Ting was nearly three times her weight.

After awaking, he saw blood coming from Wong’s mouth. When he discovered she was no longer breathing, he dismembered her then sliced the flesh away from the bone, which he chopped into small pieces and flushed down the toilet.

He wrapped her head in a plastic bag, placed that in a paper bag and then took a bus to Kowloon City pier where he threw it into the sea, the prosecution said.

The jury was shown a video in which Ting told police how he had disposed of Wong.

But the video version as to what he did with the body differed from evidence given in court. In the video, he said he went to a nearby market to look for plastic bags, a foam box and trolley.

He then put the body and some bricks inside a big plastic bag, which he placed inside the foam box. He then carted the box on a trolley to the pier.

Ting was arrested after Wong was reported missing by her family.

Police traced him via Wong’s telephone records and located him on May 6, nine days after she was killed, the court was told.

Three days later, police discovered human tissue in a pipe in Ting’s building, the DNA of which matched that of Wong. Ting admitted in a police statement he did not turn himself in immediately because he feared he would be charged with murder and face life imprisonment.

However, he called a friend and told him he “had killed a girl.” He also asked the friend to tell police.

Ting told officers he wanted to deny the killing, but later felt bad as “he had no reason to kill her, but did not know why he had done it.”

The hearing continues today before High Court Judge Alan Wright.

According to MSNBC a San Antonio mother dismembered and ate parts of her 3 1/2 week old baby. Otty Sanchez claims that the devil made her do it. Police Chief, William McManus, said that the scene was so gruesome that he could not really speak about it and that everyone on the scene was shocked and could barely speak.

They found the baby dismembered in the bedroom with three of his toes chewed off, his face torn away, his head severed and his brains ripped out. When the cops showed up to the house they found the woman sitting on a couch screaming “I killed my baby!” with a wound to her chest and her throat partially slashed. She ate the babies brain and some of his body parts before stabbing herself.

The woman is being charged with capital murder for the death of her son. She was treated at the hospital and is being held on a million dollar bail.

The murder of the baby happened a week after his father moved out of the home. There were other people in the home (the woman’s sister and her other 2 children, ages 5 & 7) that were unharmed.

The woman’s aunt said that her niece had been in and out of a psychiatric ward and that a hospital called several months ago to check up on her. She also said that her niece didn’t mean to do it because she was not in her right mind.

That leads me and the writer of the article to assume that she will use postpartum depression and/or some form of psychosis as her defense. The article writer mentions 2 other mothers that are well recognized for committing henious crimes against their children. Andrea Yates who drowned her 5 children in her house back in 2001 because Satan was inside her and she had to save her children from hell. And Dena Schlosser who sliced off her 10 month old daughter’s arms, killing her, in order to give her to God. Both women were found not guilty by reason of insanity.

This really makes me point out a few things:

1) Religion is a bitch!! Sanchez killed her baby because the devil made her do it. Yates had the devil inside her and she was saving her kids from hell and Schlosser killed her baby to give her to God…… damn I will stick to being Wiccan thank you very much if this is what comes out of religion!

2) We have to obtain licenses to drive a car and to own a pet… but anyone can have a kid?!?! I’m sorry but when I read shit like this it makes me wonder why we don’t consider making women take classes and pass a test before having kids.

3) We should make those that want to ban abortions read these articles and meet abused children. That would be a nice wakeup call.

4) This is going to bring me some backlash but: should we not give the state the power to sterilize insane women in the hopes that it would stop the Yates’, Sanchez’s and Schlosser’s of the world??

5) How old was the sister that was in the house when this murder occurred? The baby must have screamed as he was being cut up, did no one hear him?

6) If her family and the baby’s father knew that she was not right in her mind, as she was in and out of the looney bin, why the hell did they not monitor her? Why would they leave a woman like her alone with 3 children since the sister is obviously either young or good for nothing?! and most importantly, why did they not make sure she was getting the help she needed?!?!?!

7) I hope that the baby died quickly so that he did not suffer much

Mid-ranged guttural vocals lead the charge for “Marching Towards Destruction” to enter the arena, while the unfaltering, no frills songwriting style is so completely solid, the punishing attack of this material easily devours the lions in said arena with conviction and a ravenous bite. The bass is ruptured in distortion and fills in the bottom end, for moshless rhythms and blastless speed to further cement death metal’s mid 90’s reanimated corpse firmly under the microscope where its spirit can live on and be in the public eye once again. The technicality and “turbo” perplexities of the modern death movement are thankfully taking a back seat to the real, evil, and far more powerful forefather of the genre. The turbo stuff had/has its place I suppose, but greatly lacks the feeling and overall human side of this beast. Old death doesn’t need the flash and speed which the modern side uses a crutch. This forces bands like Axis Powers to borrow from the older days in sound and style, BUT they have to write more memorable and meaningful songs to compensate for the annoying scales and hyperspeed regurgitation of sonic math problems. I’ll take real songs over calculus any day. “Marching…” is a welcomed addition to my collection indeed. –Marty

Not I! This material is blastless death metal in the vein of the early 90’s with a burly and warm guitar tone ala Divine Eve and a burnt out, throaty death metal vocal style stirring the sonic abyss. The mid-paced to slow plod of these songs allows the open nature of the riffs to dig in with Celtic Frostian might and catchiness. A very organic and dirty sounding EP from a project that I look forward to hearing more development from in the form of a full-length should this power trio last. –Marty

I recently bought the “Swedish Death Metal” book by Daniel Ekeroth. When I read the intr

I recently bought the “Swedish Death Metal” book by Daniel Ekeroth. When I read the introduction I was sure that I would read non-stop and finish it within a day. But, for the pleassure to last longer, I resisted this initial urge . So, now it’s been 5 days and I have only read the first 130 pages.

This moment that I write this post I am in fact listening to swedish death metal. I am listening to Evocation’s ‘Tales from the tomb’, which stinks of Entombed (Left hand path era) but you can also hear early At the Gates melodies here and there. Swedish death metal! Such a huge part of my life. All the memories and all the new feelings even today, make this scene a part of me. So far, whatever I know about the scene was contextualised by bands’ thanx lists, biographies in records (e.g. like the “Death is just the beginning” compilations), interviews in magazines, zines like the ancient ‘Slayer’ zine (this zine was GOD), and so on. Hence, I have a quite fragmented picture of the early years. Now I get the chance to find out stuff about the scene before it went mainstream.

The first chapters of Ekeroth’s book guided me through the unknown lives of early death metalers in Sweden, their relationship with underground punk, the thoughts and reactions to the emerging death and black metal scene in which all my heroes were nurtured. It was really funny to find out about the relationship between Johnny (Nihilist/Unleashed) and Nicke (Nihilist/Entombed). It is apparent than even to this day they still don’t have much respect for each other. I think that this is normal. I think that both Johnny and Nicke are powerful personalities. They need to dominate, and that is why it would be impossible to share a band! The same thing applies to Fred (Carnage/Dismember). He is a powerful personality and I think it would be impossible to co-exist inside a band with either one of the other two guys. However, I always thought of Dismember as a really democratic band in relation to all others. All band members contributed and especially in the past, everyone in the band was a very creative and active individual. That is one more reason why I respect Dismember so much.

Other awesome things I have discovered so far from this awesome book, include that Petrov (Morbid/Nihilist/Entombed/Comecon) and Cederlund (Morbid/Nihilist/Entombed/Disfear) play in the “Morbid” cd that I have and I didn’t even know! Also, I like the fact that Lindberg (Grotesque/At the gates/…/Disfear), started as a punk and now he is a punk again with the awesome Disfear! Also, there are so many interesting testimonials from scene protagonists (Ekeroth should pay Anders from Unleashed a share of the book’s earnings, seriously) and awesome pictures! I am really looking forward on getting on with the rest of the book…

Now, for some objections:

1. It is crystal clear that Ekeroth is a huge Entombed, and Nicke Andersson in specific, fan. He says so somewhere in the book himself. It is obvious that he was convinced that swedish death metal bands owe everything to Entombed and Nicke, regardless of what his research would tell him. At some point, Ola from Grave told him that they were all heavily into Carcass, and that explains their heavier turn on their second demo tape. However, Ekeroth interprets this heavier turn as the result of the Stocholm influence (at that time, the Nicke influence!). I think that in his willingness to crown Nicke the King of swedish death metal, he overlooks other important factors. It makes sense to me that the reason why bands like Entombed, Dismember, Grave, Afflicted (especially on their first album) sound similar, is because they had similar influences. It is ridiculous not to admit that “Evil dead” from the first Death album, has an intro which is the blueprint for swedish death metal! Early Autopsy as well! The beginning of “Left hand path”, the undisputed monument of swedish death metal, is 100% Bathory, especially the guitar solo! Dismember have recorded only two covers in all their career, “Beyond the unholly grave“ by Death and “Pagan saviour” by Autopsy, and I think that says it all in terms of what they fancied and what they copied! Further, in almost all testimonials within the book, from all kinds of different people, the “guys from nihilist and dismember” (or Nicke and Fred) are always acknowledged together! It therefore makes sense for people who spent so much time together, to share musical ideas and sound similar.

2. Ekeroth’s attempts to flatter Nicke produce some really misleading and unfair conlusions. For instance, at some point he says that Fred (dismember) copies Nicke’s drum playing. That is ridiculous. Nicke cannot stand still one moment!!! He changes rhythms all the time and does all kinds of different breaks and, seriously, many times he is very hard to follow, if you are an inexperienced drummer! He is a technical drummer! Fred, on the contrary, is extremely steady, he does pretty brief and straightforward breaks and he has a specific range of breaks. He does the same 3-4 kinds of breaks the whole time! He has a 100% personal style, which shines through in records like “Indecent…” and “Massive…” in specific. Also, the part about Nicke influencing everyone with his unpublished zine! How is that possible?

3. Finally, even though Ekeroth provides extremely interesting insights in the early scene, I still have questions unanswered! For instance, on the inlay of Left hand path there’s a thank list. At some point, the band thanx Carnage and inside a parenthesis it says “Milli Vannili-Fred! Thanks for the riff mate!”. They obviously refer to Fred Estby, but which riff are they referring to? Trivia like this go unanswered, although I still have not got to the part about the first swedish death albums.

to be continued…

An unnamed lady from Nikopol in the Dnipropetrovsk Region of central Ukraine has been arrested on suspicion of killing and dismembering her husband, and then disposing of his body at a reservoir. Passers-by (most likely dog walkers, they usually are) discovered the gruesome headless and limbless remains lying on the ice.

Police chief, Vitaly Kodiya is cited as saying that the man’s head and limbs were discovered shortly afterwards in a dustbin. They were soon identified as those of a former Soviet special forces paratrooper who’d fought in Afghanistan.

According to kriminal.tv, his wife killed him after he attempted to practise sambo moves on her. Sambo, a modern martial art that crosses aikido, judo and wrestling was developed in the Soviet Union as a combat sport.

It appears that he attacked her whilst in a drunken stupor and culminated his training session by lining her up against a door and throwing knives around her body, as he’d been taught in Afghanistan. Having had enough of the abuse, the lady picked up a hammer and smashed it into his head – who can blame her?

She dragged his body to their shed, and then, unsure if he was dead or alive, cut off his hands, legs and head – in that order. After popping his extremities into a trash bin, she took his torso to the reservoir and threw it over the side expecting it to sink. Unfortunately – for her that is – the body didn’t break the ice, and lay on the surface where it was spotted a short while afterwards.

Life in gaol awaits her. A sad case, really, as if she were driven to it then she’s hardly to blame. Of course, there’s no guarantee that her claims of abuse are true, but the rash endeavour to dispose of the body doesn’t suggest anything premeditated.

I know what you’re thinking: ‘premeditated’ is such a showy word. True, true. . . .

February 11, 2009. MediaTakeOut.com just received the following report from a Pakistani newspaper. This story is just too CRAZY!! The victim, identified only as Khalil (23) recently arrived in Karachi from Rahimyar Khan and works as a waiter at a restaurant in Neelum Colony, Clifton. On the night of January 27, an identified man ordered Khalil to deliver food to women sitting in a car parked outside the restaurant where he works. “After giving me the order, the man went towards the car. I took the order to the car where the women – two of whom were young and the third was middle-aged – told me that they had recently shifted to the area,” said Khalil. He said the women asked him to deliver food to their house every day, and he agreed. “They asked me to go along with them in the car … they said they wanted to show me where their house was.” Khalil said the women gave him a ‘glazed sweet’ and once they got to the house, “they gave me milk that had some drug mixed in it … I fell unconscious after drinking it”. Khalil said when he gained consciousness, he found that the women had undressed him, “and they were forcing themselves onto me”. ASP Asad Raza said the women assaulted Khalil sexually for the next four days, and then threw him near Qayyumabad River. Khalil managed to stop a passing motorist – who took him to Civil Hospital. “His condition is really bad … his genitals are bleeding and he cannot walk properly,” said Raza. Raza said the women belonged to rich families of Karachi’s Clifton area. “It’s a complicated case … but we are hoping that we will solve it soon,” he added. Hopefully these women are brought to justice…

Even bands like Entombed, someone that Dismember used to be slagged constantly for stealing their sound so many years ago, have so completely lost the faith, I rarely even remember they are still together and releasing music. Other than the one stutter step known as “Massive Killing Capacity”, where Dismember really didn’t fall apart, but concentrated more on a cleaner sound and more streamlined melodies, doesn’t in any way tarnish this bands death metal throne. “Dismember” is probably one of the best albums from this band in the past 10 years. This album is the perfect marriage of Maiden-esque melody and disease ridden Autopsy worship, swollen with the Swedish trademark, down-tuned twin axe grind. Matti Karki still possesses that dank drunk growl that makes this band so special. The production is pristine, yet full of filthy slime. “Dismember” is an effortless “fuck off” to the modern death metal bands that have taken over the genre with their machine-like speed and emotionless, out of key riff writing. 11 tracks are here, every one of them is a hook bloated statement of excellence. –Marty

Migrant worker had once said human flesh was delicious

07 January 2009

A MAN who once told neighbours that ‘human meat was delicious’ has been arrested in Guangzhou, China, after the dismembered part of a girl were found in his fridge.

The migrant worker, known as A He, is believed to be mentally ill.

He was detained after blood was discovered outside his flat in Guangzhou city late on Friday afternoon.

Detectives found seven or eight parts of a girl believed to be 4-year-old Li Lingli, reported The Hong Kong Standard.

The girl, whose parents are migrant workers from Hunan, disappeared on Friday morning while four of her family members were working or busy, the Guangzhou Daily reported.

The report said Lingli’s grandparents began the search for the missing girl that day.

The police arrived at noon and searched all 50 rental flats in the neighbourhood, but found nothing.

Fresh blood

In the late afternoon, Lingli’s grandmother saw fresh blood outside a flat belonging to Ah He, reported The South China Morning Post.

Inside the flat, she saw a bottle of dark red liquid, believed to be blood.

This convinced her that the man had something to do with her missing granddaughter.

The police agreed to search the room again and found a child’s dismembered body in the fridge.

A He, said to be in his 30s or 40s, was described as a recluse who sometimes wore women’s dresses and even underwear in public, the Guangzhou Daily reported, citing neighbours.

It is believed he worked in a garment factory.

He reportedly moved to the area about two months ago and rarely spoke to other residents, but neighbours said he would sometimes talk to himself when he became excited while watching the communal television.

He particularly enjoyed war films, said reports.

An unnamed neighbour was quoted as saying: ‘(A He) said that human meat was in fact delicious.’

A He allegedly made the comment while watching a film showing people being killed in battle.

The police refused to give more details.

Sounds like Dismember. Plain and simple. This band is the longstanding cornerstone and benchmark for Swedish death metal and to hear them in 2006 still putting out a full album worth of well sculpted material that’s just as true to their core as their debut album, is beyond an impressive feat. “The Gods that Never Was” was captured on CD by Sweden’s Dug Out studios (Meshuggah, Dark Funeral) and even though I really enjoy the full throttled attack and room ambience of the sound, the guitars seem a bit too roomy. Not enough high end bite (As found on Pieces or Like an Ever Flowing Stream for example) cuts through the mix, so the drums and vocals tend to bury the guitars. This is most noticable on the faster, note dominant riffs, but in turn, the mid paced powerchord stompers really possess a full bodied “WHUMP” when there’s crunching. I will say that as the years go by, Dismember does subtly continue to develop their sound, for each album seems to contain even more refined harmonies within the individual songs and there’s no denying David Blomqvist’s love for melodic and memorable solo work. Tracks like “Autopsy” really showcase Dismember at their most vicious and melodic where Blomqvist digs in with several very heartfelt solos that pile on the class and help elevate the detuned clamor of old style death metal out of the past and into the fiery flames of the future. Death metal doesn’t have to go 100 mph all the time –a crutch often embraced by the new school – for Dismember continue to produce impressively written albums without losing the listener with out of key riff ideas hurled into redundancy by an over the top sense of brutality. There is a fine line between blind brutality and poignant songwriting and Dismember have somehow gotten it right almost every time (I did dislike the overly simplistic Massive Killing Capacity) for 17 years now. Bravo! I liked the last album, like “The God that Never Was” and if Dismember stays on course, I’ll definitely like the next album as well. – Marty
