Since I last wrote in my blog, many things have happened. I got over my swine flu, but ended up miss

Since I last wrote in my blog, many things have happened.

I got over my swine flu, but ended up missing the last week of lessons and the week of exams. I was so tired due to my upside-down sleeping patterns. Not to say I slept upside down, but rather if I went to bed it was at 5am-6am in the morning and I would get up at 3pm-4pm. Occasionally I didn’t sleep at all for periods of over 24 hours.
So I met with my teacher, Kanayama-sensei, on the Friday at 4pm which was the last day of the exams. She tried to convince me to just resit the semester rather than take the exams, since I wasn’t doing very well in class anyway. Considering I was homesick, injured, depressed and tired for pretty much the entire semester ensured I couldn’t do better than scrape a pass.
Anyways, just after the meeting she mentioned that there was a party to celebrate the end of the semester, so I went along since my headache wasn’t too bad and I figured it would make me sleepy enough to sleep early.
It was a really fun party and I got to see my friends again. It was pretty cheap considering it was all you can drink and they gave us some nice-ish food. Best thing was socialising with the teachers (Song-sensei and Kanayama-sensei both sat at our table in the izakaya) and seeing Chanelle mix drinks while trying not to get caught by the izakaya staff, having brought her own selection in with the intention of mixing mojitos and pina coladas for the teachers. For some reason they had never tried them before.

I went home afterwards, having to wait half an hour for the bus (bought some cakes from the Little Mermaid bakery before it closed. They make really nice apple pies. Though maybe not as good as my nana Margaret or my little brother. Their apple pies are amazing.

I revised my butt off for the exams. Was in the library as much as I had been before I had the internet, though it was crowded a lot and I couldn’t get a good desk. I spent 6 hours there drumming causative and passive verbs into my head and writing out kanji after kanji. I even practiced speed reading, which came in so useful in my final exam, since I mistimed it and ended up having 10 minutes to finish the reading section.

I think, despite my mountains of revision, that I failed. Mostly due to my abismal performance in the speaking test. I’d just finished the 2 hour final exam and due to mistiming it I had been forced to miss out some grammar questions I would have otherwise been ablw to answer, and then had 10 minutes to read a 2 page spread of text and answer 2 pages of questions on it. I answered all the questions though, with the exception on the extended writing answer. It shook me up though, realising I had probably failed despite the fact I actually thought I did ok on the kanji and grammar until that point. I ended up with no break and went straight in to the speaking exam. My mind blanked, and the kanji readings in the text that I memorised that morning left me struggling. I made so many mistakes that I knew it was going to be a failure. I ended up getting upset and could hardly continue. I got to the interview part and got through that ok, except half way through I realised I was supposed to be using polite and humble forms and I wasn’t. So I failed again. Then I got to the roleplay. I had written out and practiced 2 of the 3 roleplays. I was better at the one on my experiences in Japan though, and knew I would do well if I got that one. But I was given the letter of reccommendation role play which I wasn’t as good at, and ended up forgetting how to speak any Japanese at all. So I gave up and didn’t finish it.

Kanayama-sensei said I only had around 50% before these exams and I need 60% to pass, so I doubt I will pass.
But she says I will be better off resitting JLP3, but it ruins my plans. I wanted to do JLP3 this semester, JLP4 next semester and intensive JLP5 and 6 in my final semester. If I have to resit, then JLP4 is the highest I can get, and it isn’t good enough to get fluent for my final year in Japanese at Newcastle University.
Also if I fail this semester, I may get my scholarship taken off me, and have to repay the 100,000yen I have already recieved. Though I can’t exactly help the fact I had influenza…

I have been pretty lonely whilst in Japan, but I am starting to get out more and make more friends. I went to Tokyo Disney Sea with the Soul Run people. I could only afford to go after 6pm (which is 3,100yen as opposed to 6,500yen for the whole day) but it was still amazing. I got to ride some fun rides and see a 3D Aladdin live show, and I bought some Minnie Mouse ears (they were 1,050yen though :S ) The fireworks were amazing. Everything was so Christmassy even though it is onlt November!
On December 2nd we are all going to Disney Land for the day. I hope I can afford it, since I am running low on money. I’m going to transfer more over this evening when the UK is up and running. I think it will be faster than last time, mostly because I actually know I need to go convert it from pounds to yen myself rather than waiting for it to happen itself. Maybe I will get a good exchange rate this time?

I went out with Gary and the guys from Canada House the other day. We went to a festival at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies not too far from ICU’s campus. We rode our bikes there, which was good because I needed the exercise. I hadn’t eaten all day but I didn’t like how small the food portion sizes were for the money they were charging. I gave in and bought some ゆず茶(Yuzu Tea) from the Korean food stall. Yuzu are a sweet citrus fruit that is very popular in Japan. It reminded me of how Lemsip would taste if it was actually yummy. Very sweet and tangy.
After the festival, some of us went off to Higashi-Koganei station’s side streets and got some Gyoza from this really nice restaurant. It only cost 500yen for 2 rows of gyoza (10 gyoza in totally I think. either 10 or 12) plus a bowl of rice, some pickles and some soup. There was free water on the table too. I had a really fun time and made new friends – some American, some Japanese.

I am hoping that I will spend the holidays going places with friends, but everyone seems busy going outside Tokyo. I can’t afford that yet. Maybe I can’t afford it until after Christmas, or perhaps not at all.

I am looking forward to Soul Run Video Night #2 (I was unaware #1 had even happened) and I really hope I have the money for Disney Land on the 2nd.

Author: Chris Elliott

Today, even disabled people can enjoy the wonder of Disneyland! If you are on crutches, you should ponder renting a Disneyland Scooter to get about the estate. The lease fee is $35 per, disney acting auditions, day, with a $20 deposit. A valid driver’s license is important, and you should be eighteen years old or older.

You can also choose to lease a wheelchair, which is not electronic. The rental fee for a wheelchair is $8 per day, with a $20 deposit.

You do not need to lease your wheelchair or Scooter from Disneyland. You can choose to rent the apparatus from a undisclosed company, and have the wheelchair or scooter delivered to your hotel room. You may discover that it is cheaper to rent from a private company, as contrary to renting from Disneyland.

Cast members and assistance personnel will be happy to help with Visitor, disney acting auditions, wheelchair, disney acting auditions, transfers, and if you should part with a wheelchair or scooter that you’ve rented from Disneyland, wholly demonstrate the ticket for the wheelchair or scooter, and Disneyland will happily supply you with another one.

Even so, if you lose a wheelchair or scooter that was rented from an outsidecompany, Disneyland will not be capable to help you replace it, and you may have to pay the rental company the full price of the chair. This is something to consider when you are attempting to decide whether to rent from Disneyland or a private company.

All of the restaurants and shops are wheelchair reachable, as are the entertainment areas. When it comes to wheelchairs, your problem will be accessing some of the rides.

Various rides are not suitable, disney acting auditions, for individuals who are in wheelchairs, while others are perfectly apt. For example, you will not be able to appreciate Donald’s Boat, Sailing Ship, or Tarzan’s Tree house.

However, there are innumerable attractions that you can appreciate, such as The Disney Gallery, Disneyland Monorail, the Disneyland Railroad, the Tiki Room, The Gold Horseshoe, It’s A Small World,, disney acting auditions, Mark Twain Riverboat, and Tom Sawyer Island.

Some attractions will require you to be transferred from your wheelchair, such as Alice in Wonderland, Indiana Jones, and the King Arthur Carrousel.

Whether or not you can enjoy a ride in your wheelchair, or you must be transferred from your wheelchair to the ride, you can in actuality enjoy most of the rides at Disneyland. Do not allow the fact that you can’t walk about the park keep you from planning a Disneyland Vacation. Now there is no more excuse not to go have fun at Disneyland!

Heyyyyyyyy I’m back!

Currently, the price for one day ticket at Disney Land is $72. That’s…a whole lot of money that I definitely don’t want to spend. Maybe Disney Land is finally recognizing that people just don’t have that kind of paper to throw around anymore so they are offering a new deal for people.

Starting January 1st, 2010, when you sign up here to volunteer a day of service with a participating organization (and your service is completed and verified) you’ll get one day admission to a Walt Disney World® or Disneyland® theme park, FREE! We want to inspire one million people to volunteer a day of service.

Myself and my wife visited Los Angeles on 22nd through 26th Aug. We had 270 miles of spectacular drive through deserts and valleys from Las Vegas. It takes around 4 hours with major part of the drive being through Mojave National Preserve. This is an unfrequented desert which doesnt even have gas stations for hours, So better keep your gas tank full before you start.

Attractions in Los Angeles

My travel itinerary was as follows,

1st Day : We were roaming around LA downtown, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Rhodeo drive till evening. In HollyWood blvd you would certainly see Historic Chinese Theater, Kodak Theater, Walk of Fame (not a great attraction) etc. You can take a city tour through Beverly hills if you are interested to have a look at Celebrity Homes and stuffs like that , I was not impressed by those tours though..

You can drive from Holly wood blvd to see Hollywood Sign which is less than 10 miles far. You cannot go near the sign since it is closed for visitors. But at least you can drive up to the point where you can take clear pictures.

I followed this Driving Direction : http://travelonthedollar.com/2009/03/26/how-to-reach-the-hollywood-sign/

If you want a risky hiking follow this http://hollywoodsigntrip.com/hollywood-sign-trail.shtml

2nd Day(Disney Land):

I would prefer to stay in Anaheim, CA 92802 because it is very near to Disney Land. You can go to Disney Land early morning and enjoy the park till midnight. If you have kids along with you, then you might need more than one day. They have an Adventure park also which is right opposite to Disneyland, it is good for adults who likes adventure. We covered both the parks in one day. Fireworks @ Disneyland was amazing. I think it was at 9 PM (Ask at information desk about this show schedule), Pls Do not miss that spectacular show…

There are plenty of immaculate hotels around this park at a very reasonable rate, I did see someone selling rooms for cheap rate(30$) in ebay too.

Important Tip : check in ebay for DisneyLand ticket. It is far less than any other internet/at the gate price. You may get 2 tickets with Fast Pass for just 90-100$/day.

3rd Day

Universal Studio, I didn’t visit this place since I had visited Florida Universal Studio earlier. I am sure it must be good. I prefer Universal Studios for adults over Disney Land. Disney Land is more focused on kid’s interests and activities.

4th Day

Beaches in Los Angeles are very beautiful. Driving along the shore line will be a nice experience , Hwy 101 from Santa Monica to Malibu looks interesting. I suggest to go to Malibu or Zuma Beach which are lonely and beautiful.

Other Attractions Around LA

Sequoia National Park : You make a one day trip (250 Miles, 4.5 Hrs) to Sequoia National Park to see big Red Wood Trees. I really like this park due to nice climate and sceneries, not only in the park but also through out the drive from LA.
Driving Directions : http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Los+Angeles,+CA&daddr=Sequoia+National+Park,+CA&hl=en&geocode=&mra=ls&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.953203,79.013672&ie=UTF8&ll=31.466154,-111.621094&spn=22.028774,39.506836&z=5

You can see the World’s largest tree( General Sherman Tree) and lot many other Big Red Wood Trees in this preserve. It is around 7000 ft above the sea level. Dont miss out the bus trip to 3 different scenic destinations from forest museum, They are worth spending time on it….
On the way to this park, we stopped at Three Rivers , Slick Rock recreational area and spent around 1 hr over there. You can swim in small river over there..(Good one)..

Important: Be very careful while driving back , Roads are a bit dangerous…Keep Max 25 MPH…

You can stay at Three Rivers or Visalia if you have plans to visit Kings Canyon National park, which is a continuation of Sequoia National Park.

Over all it was a wonderful experience in Los Angles..Thanks for reading

Some friends of ours who are artists are considering a move to Detroit and made an impromptu trip up

Some friends of ours who are artists are considering a move to Detroit and made an impromptu trip up to see the city for the first time. Andrew and I went to school and lived downtown for a few years, but we haven’t spent much time downtown since we moved back here from Delaware 9 months ago. A little overwhelmed with the idea of giving a complete tour of the city on my own, I called upon a friend who luckily had some time to help me take our visitor on a whirlwind tour of different artist communities in the city. I didn’t get as many photos to share as I would have liked, but we were moving fast.

This Hamtramck installation was done by some visiting artists. (The wood cutout over the window, not the burning.)

We drove passed the Power House Project, which has received quite a bit of press lately.

The Power House Project serves two primary goals:
[1] To develop a model home.
The house, as an architectural experiment, will work as a prototype example or model home for what is possible in the current atmosphere of cheap housing in the city. What does it take to create a truly affordable, secure, sustainable house for under $99,000?
[2] The house is a social art project. (info:phproject)

I had never known about this little block of Farnsworth Street before so was really excited to visit here. There is a vibrant community of people working to restore homes, make art and keep up a wonderful community garden.

I wish I would have put my fingers into the photo to give perspective on this tiny phone.

We quickly drove down Heidleberg Street.

The Heidelberg Project, bearing the name of the street on which it exists, was started in 1986 by Tyree Guyton.

…Guyton began by cleaning up vacant lots on Heidelberg and Elba Streets. From the refuse they collected, Guyton began to transform the street into a massive art environment. (Heidleberg Project)

and through Brush Park

Homes were built in Brush Park beginning in the 1850s and peaking in the 1870s and 1880s; one of the last homes built was constructed in 1906 by architect Albert Kahn for his personal use. Kahn lived in this home until his death in 1942, after which it was obtained by the Detroit Urban League, which still uses it today.

During the 19th century, around 300 homes were built in Brush Park, including 70 Victorian mansions. However, the neighborhood began to decline in the late 19th and early 20th century, when the advent of streetcars and then automobiles allowed prosperous citizens to live further from downtown. Early residents moved out, notably to up-and-coming neighborhoods such as Indian Village and Boston-Edison, and the neighborhood became less fashionable. During the Great Depression, many of the old mansions were subdivided into apartments, and as demand for housing fell after World War II, the homes were abandoned and fell into disrepair. (wikipedia)

I had completely forgotten about Hamtramck Disney Land, but was so glad when we noticed it poking out of the alley behind Klinger Street.

A retired gentleman named Dmytro Szylak — who came to Hamtramck from the Ukraine right after WWII — created Hamtramck Disneyland. It took him from 1997 or so until 1999 to put it all up. Several of the displays are wired-up and move when he flicks a switch. He also has lights and music wired-up. It’s in the back of an unassuming house on Klinger St. right in the alley. It looks like a carnival for gnomes.
We made a stop at CCS and also drove through Russel Industrial, Boston Edison, New Center, North End, Eastern Market, Woodbridge, Corktown, Hubbard Farms, Mexicantown and East English Village.
Just heard about a cool program that Disney has for 2010. It is Give a Day, Get A Day. Disney is giving a free park ticket for those who volunteer in selected community service projects. Sign-up begins January 1, 2010 but is you can sign up for email reminders not. I think it is a cool way to encourage community service.

(And to think I scooped Mrs. CollateralDamage – who writes the Disney focused blog Broke Hoedown – on this. WOOT!)

This is not the first time that “Just Another Band from East LA” has done the Mouse. On the great compilation Stay Awake they performed “I Wanna Be Like You” from The Jungle Book, which was recorded for the movie by the great Louis Prima (and is included on LLGD). I bought Stay Awake on vinyl back in the day (1988) and highly recommend getting the CD. It also has Sun Ra (!!!) doing “Pink Elephants On Parade” and Tom Waits’ version of “Heigh Ho (Dwarf’s Marching Song).”

Stay Awake was one of several odd and wonderful compilations that came out around then. The other one I have is “Lost In The Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill” (1985). While it does have Sting doing “Mack The Knife” this is more than balanced out by the other tracks including Lou Reed’s “September Song,” Stan Ridgeway (of Wall of Voodoo) does a sublime and terrifying version of “Canon Song,” Marianne Faithfull’s exquisitely ragged “Ballad of the Soldier’s Wife,” Todd Rundgren doing “Call From The Grave,” and many other great ones. It’s out of print, which is a shame, and used copies are selling for $23 and up. C’mon over to my house and I’ll play it for you for free.

I’ve never been to Disney World. Before you say “Oh, neither have I,” I’ve

I’ve never been to Disney World. Before you say “Oh, neither have I,” I’ve also never been to Disney Land. “You’ve never been to Disney?” people ask as if I’ve just told them I’ve never used indoor plumbing. No, I’ve never been to mother f-ing Disney.

Not that I’m too bitter, but deep in my soul, there are feelings of anger and resentment that have been harbored for 20+ years over the Disney issue. As a child, it was my dream to visit Disney World. I remember when a classmate returned from a Disney vacation with a Mickey Mouse pencil that I wanted so bad I would have sold my soul. “Maybe next year kids,” my dad would say as we packed up the car and made our 8 hour drive to the Ozarks. Instead of Disney, we had mini-golf and a little arcade called Two Bit Town that housed a row of skee-ball machines. Next year always turned into a few more years, with plenty of excuses for why it “just wasn’t a good year to go.” Two decades have passed, and I have yet to see a spinning tea cup.

My ex boss couldn’t believe I’d never been to Disney World, so she brought four albums of family vacation photos for me to look through so I could have a better feel for the park. She had been there something like six times. I’m pretty sure she thought my parents must have abused me.

Again, I’m not bitter. It’s not as if I really strike you for a person who would enjoy the happiest place on earth. Long lines, bastards running around every where, overpriced fried food, and rides…I hate rides. I can’t handle Wal*Mart, so I don’t know I would be able to handle Wal*Mart with roller coasters. Maybe it could have been magical in my youth, but as an adult it would just be a place of way too many fanny packs and overstuffed stretch pants. Besides, I’m really bothered by Mickey Mouse. That little shit has molester written all over him.

Geoff Carter is an excellent and smart writer who, among other things, produces the Disney-centered

Geoff Carter is an excellent and smart writer who, among other things, produces the Disney-centered blog YourSouvenirGuide (but don’t hold that against him). In the post Ten things Disney could have done to geek up without buying Marvel he explains both why Disney buying Spidey was a bad idea and how they could have leveraged the properties they already own.

To my mind, the purchase of Marvel is one of the few missteps the Mouse has made under Bob Iger’s reign. Disney isn’t getting a hell of a lot for its money. The theme park rights to the characters will continue to be held by Universal. And the movie properties .. will remain the properties of Sony, Fox and Paramount for the forseeable future. …. Four billion dollars spent to wait out contracts and to see if Avi Arad and Jerry Bruckeheimer will duke it out in Thunderdome.

My favorite suggestion:

9. The Disney Princesses: Teach them kung-fu and arm them with wrist-holstered blades and pistols.

Works for me.
