And while we’re on animal news, how did I miss this story over the weekend? Breeders have been accused of creating “bizarre mutant cats.” Apparently, in this weird Chernobyl of cat stylists, some of “the animals’ tears do not drain away properly and cause breathing difficulties.”

Is there anything more gratuitously evil than suffocating your cat with its own tears? It’s the sort of thing I imagine Walt Disney getting up to in between torturing Communists and luring children into his gingerbread dungeon.

I used to know someone who told me that reading that poem on the front of the paper made him decide in 1957 to go and study English literature. Sadly, in spite of winning a scholarship to the college of FR Leavis, circumstance intervened. A girl became pregnant, and he didn’t resume his studies for another four decades. Which was when I met him. I wrote a poem about him once; maybe I’ll drag it out and dust if off sometime. I might write one about the sea on Mars, but the Mirror’s lead today, “A Space Oddysea,” is somehow less motivating.

My daughter signed up to play in “Pixie Hollow” as a fairy with Tinkerbell and her friends.  Disney supplied a link to an “Arrival Day Parent Pack“.

WTF?

It has a congratulations card for me to print for my daughter for this “very special occasion” and special treats for me to make and a sign to print.

I get that Disney is a marketing machine.  They are marketing wizards but holy cow … this is an online game.  If a parent actually did all of that nonsense, what the heck would be expected for real life accomplishments?  Fireworks?

Aside from New Moon, I had a double dose of movie last week with Disney’s A Christmas Carol directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey. The movie is based from a classic Charles Dickens book about the infamous penny-pincher Ebenezer Scrooge who spends his days making money and never cared to enjoy anything else in life.

It was last Saturday afternoon when A Christmas Carol premiered in Mall of Asia’s IMAX Theater. Like the kid that I am, I was pretty excited for the IMAX experience since it was my first time to catch a full film in IMAX ever (yuh, I know I’m such a loser… the only time I was able to “experience” IMAX was in HK Disneyland–and it wasn’t even a full movie).

Anyway, I arrived at the venue just in time for the cocktails. In spite of the disappointing serving of food from Chowking (with one siomai each person), the event was pretty much amazing. It had free glitter tattoo and photo-taking going on. SM also had some chorale singers to fill the air with Christmas carol.

I loved the way Disney perfectly picked Jim Carrey to be Ebenezer. It was such a splendid comical execution, truly something both the kids and oldies will enjoy. I love how the 3 ghosts carried totally different personalities (and I personally hate the eerie Ghost of Christmas Future). Overall, A Christmas Carol is a movie that you can watch with your family on a typical Sunday afternoon.

Opening on Nov. 25 in regular theaters across the Philippines, as well as in Digital 3D cinemas and in IMAX 3D in SM Mall of Asia and SM North EDSA.

Fucking Genies, I use to think Aladdin was my favorite DISNEY movie, but wow.. I was totally wrong.

1. Description:

It was a typical night in the world of Brittany. I sat at home in my Aladdin t-shirt, cat in arms, remote control on the couch and of course Aladdin on the T.V. screen. I was so obsessed with Aladdin, it was ridiculous. If you stepped one foot into my room, you would be repulsed. Aladdin was head to toe in my room, tigers all over the bed, each character on my wall, bedspread, wallpaper, pillows, clothes, and ect. Getting to the point, I was infatuated by Aladdin the “movie”.

2. Falling Asleep:

I finished watching the movie and went to bed.

3. THE DREAM:that ruined it all.

It was a beautiful Sunday morning in Orange County, CA. Like any fucking typical day, it was hotter then hell. My brother and I were on our bikes while riding through our elementary school. We were racing to see who could get through the bicycle licensing course first, without breaking the rules. I mean hello, guess who won….I DID! Shock, right? Well anywho, back with it, Kyle was extremely angry with me so he decided to ride off, and the next thing I knew was it was dark. Somehow, I ended up in my neighbors backyard next to a pool. Who do I see in the pool, I see my brother(let me inform you, he doesn’t know how to swim). My stomach instantly sank to the bottom of the tank, I had no idea what was going on. To the right of me was the Genie from Aladdin. He was holding my brother hostage. Their was no possible reason why Genie wanted to kill him. My mind was about to explode, how could this magical creature want to kill my brother? What the fuck is going on I asked myself. I remember going at Genie forcefully with his lamp. Then he whipped up into a tornado, he was the scariest tornado I’ve ever seen. He was like smoke with a red shift, and then it turned into a black hole. The he blew a gush a wind at me and I flew through the air and hit the brick wall, damaging my scalp a little. I remember touching the back of my head and there was blood all over it. I said, “That’s it GENIE! Your going to die!” Somehow a light saber was in my hand and the only way I could kill the genie was stab him in the back and then flush the pool. Well it had to be done, it was like I was in the matrix, I went through the air like a bird soaring through the sky. I stabbed him in the back and did a back flip onto the “flusher”. The pool went crazy, it was like a whirl pool and both my brother and I got sucked in, we fought for our lives, but we ended up both dying.

4. After:

I woke up crying because not only did my brother and I die. I now look at the Genie as an evil monster. What the hell, despite the sick innuendo’s Disney offers to the young public, I thought I could count on Genie to not become such a horrible sight.

5. Fuck off Aladdin.

This was so long ago. Not a very good description, but will do for now.

It took a whole 12 days for us to post a picture of The Mouse himself. Mickey of course!! There are many places throughout the parks to meet the characters. This photo was taken at the EPCOT Character Spot. We waited in line for about 45 minutes to meet Mickey, Minnie, Pluto, & Goofy. So, less than 15 minutes per character, which is not too bad. Even though we aren’t kids anymore, it was definitely fun to meet the characters. After seeing Jen’s bride ears or our “Just Married” pins, they always congratulated us, hugged us or asked to see our rings — it was very cute and lots of fun!!

i know what you’re thinking:  these are words coming from a man who died in 1936.  what does he know? okay, maybe that’s not what you were thinking.  if it was, i love you.  if it wasn’t, let’s pretend it was so i can still love you.

language is fluid.  in 1936 fiction was most likely restricted to stories orated or told on pages; in 2009 fiction means something else entirely.

i was having a conversation with someone yesterday, and she was expressing her frustrations with two apartment mates – nothing peculiar about that.  what did strike me as curious, however, was when she explained the reason she was frustrated with them.

they watch disney channel.  they like it.  they’re naive.

she was essentially hating on them because, in her mind, grown adults should not enjoy things that are meant to be enjoyed by children.  i was so upset.  but in reaching beyond my emotional response to her mistaken beliefs, i realized that she actually had something profound to say.

that is, in 2009, fiction is naive.  it isn’t by accident that reality television dominates the schedules of every major and minor network on the air.  on mtv unplugged, lauryn hill once famously said “fantasy is what people want, but reality is what they need.”  we live in an age of skepticism.

i have to give it to lauryn – she’s right.  a lot of people are in such denial of the circumstances that are in front of them that they refuse to accept it as reality.  they ignore real life by embracing fantasy.

but doesn’t this denial include everyone?  films, clubs, campuses, the list goes on (music, ms. hill?).  perhaps we have immersed ourselves so deeply in fantasy that we cannot tell the difference anymore…like fish describing water.

and that’s precisely the point.  we don’t know that we’re drowning in fantasy because it has become the very thing that sustains us.  it has become a necessity.  and that certainly did not happen by accident.  in crying out, “give me reality or give me death”, we are left with fantasy after all.  reality television is phony yet people talk about the characters and situations as if they’re real.  and these are the same people that tell adults not to watch disney channel.

Fairy tales, are more than true.  Not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be defeated. (chesterton)

Evie has recently become obsessed with Alice in Wonderland. She has 2 slightly different versions of the Little Golden Book summary of the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland. (Kind of like a game of telephone, isn’t it? A translation of a translation.) It’s not all that surprising that she’s into it, considering it stars a little girl, a cat, and a rabbit; probably Evie’s three favorite things to hear stories about.

Imagine her delight when she found a copy of the original Lewis Carrol book on my nightstand.

I bought it at a used book sale some time ago, meaning to read it, but never quite getting around to it. Evie, however, was desperate to read it immediately. Sara and I figured that she was probably ready for chapter books and, though it’s probably not the one I would have chosen, it would do. So I started reading it to Evie before bed.

I’m not sure why Evie liked the book so much. She mostly seemed bored while we were reading it and asked for more pictures. Alice is quite a precocious little girl and most (if not all) of the story went right over Evie’s head. After we finished reading she would ask me what happened and I would try to summarize it in a way that would be more interesting to her. But every night she would demand that book, even when I tried to get her to read something else.

Now it so happens that around this time we stumbled across an Alice in Wonderland play being put on by the Chicago Kids Company. The timing was too perfect, so we had to go (in fact, Evie and I finished the last page of the book the morning of the show).

Tickets were pretty cheap, and, the day of, Evie and I were pretty excited about it. It was definitely designed for kids and was very interactive. There was yelling, counting, and even a dance section. During the dancing Evie mimicked Alice exactly, move for move. Because most of the theater was full of school kids, Evie and I ended up in the very front row. This was pretty cool, but maybe a little scary for Evie. At one point, the White Rabbit ran through the row right behind us and then down the stairs next to Evie and she about clawed my leg off trying to get into my lap away from him! Evie had insisted on bringing her stuffed bunny to the show, and, whenever the White Rabbit was on stage, she would hold her bunny up so he could “see”. Afterwards, the characters all waited out front to say hi to the kids. Evie was a little nervous, so she wouldn’t get too close, but she did show her bunny to the White Rabbit. He said that it looked like one of his cousins, and I think that was a highpoint for Evie.

I asked her what her favorite part was and she said the singing (it was a musical). She liked seeing all the characters she expected to see. The play was about an hour, and there was no question about Evie sitting still for it. She was enthralled and probably could have gone another hour, no problem. Huge attention span on that girl. (Side note: the theater company must have been a little leery about the Queen of Heart’s famous “Off with their heads!” line, because when it came time to deliver it, they decided to go with, “Off to the dungeon!” instead)

Since Evie’s main exposure to Alice was from the book and not the Disney movie (which she’s never seen), I imagine her perspective on the show was a little different than the average audience member. She kept asking for obscure characters like the Griffin, the Duchess and the Mock Turtle. Her favorite character in the book is the Griffin, which she knows has a “birdie face and lion legs”. She has decided in particular that the Griffin in Alice in Wonderland’s face is red, like a cardinal. She was not quite sure what to make of Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. I seem to remember them being a big part of the movie, but they aren’t in the book at all.

Anyway, it was a great day and I’m sure Evie will be talking about it for a long time. Already she keeps talking about “when we go back” and who we will see (she’s hoping for the Duchess). She told me, “When I grow up and become a mommy, I’ll take you to see Alice in Wonderland!” Unfortunately, I forgot the camera and didn’t buy a shirt, so memories are all we’ll have.

Ok so it’s not really a life changing situation but our Saturday nights will never be the same…yes that’s right I am talking about Jedward being booted off X-Factor on Sunday night.

Now we all know there has been a lot of controversy over these boys since they first arrived on our screens at the tender age of 17 (they have had their 18th birthday since) after they decided they had the X-Factor and so auditioned to be “the next big thing”, however I decided to be on Team Jedward, right from the start I might add, and must say I am sad to see them go.

I can honestly say I can’t remember when an X-Factor contestant got as much press as the two boys. Heat Magazine pushed the whole Jed We Can Campaign and a number of tributes poured in from celebrities over Twitter:

Peaches Geldof - “Jedward are out. I am now going to take a week out for mourning. I am in shock. It may be the end, but we witnessed something truly beautiful. Jed forever. The end of an era. But their legacy lives on in the hearts of millions, always and forever united in our battle cry of JED WE CAN!”

Little Boots - “I know they divide everyone but I love Jedward. Everyone keeps saying it’s a singing competition but I thought it was the x factor not the vocal factor?!”

Nick Grimshaw - “Never has a day been so dark or an evening so grim, my hearts bleeds and my punctured soul weeps….as Jedward become Deadward.”

I am glad so many big names got behind John and Edward because I thought it was ridiculous that they got so much bad press in the first place…and the audience booing them on stage was just rude. Thank God our Dermot decided to put them in their place one week.

I do have to say that although I was Team Jedward, I think it was right of Dannii to vote them off against Olly (finally a judge makes a decision!) It has come to that stage in the competition where it is all about making it to the final and I think we all knew deep down it wasn’t going to happen for the twins.

It’s not like they are going anywhere anyway. They were on GMTV this morning and have already been inundated with presenting offers from networks including Disney, Nickelodeon and the BBC.

They have even been dubbed the next Ant and Dec and are expected to make over £2 million in the next year or so.

Something tells me this isn’t the last we will be seeing of these cheeky chappies!

Just hearing that familiar music was enough to bring back dozens of fond memories when I saw the Toy Story 3 trailer a couple months back. If you don’t remember it or missed it the first time around, then here’s a look.

I can’t wait. The original cast returns, with the sad exception of the late Jim Varney, whose character Slinky Dog will instead be voiced by actor Blake Clark. And joining the cast are the likes of Timothy Dalton, Jeff Garlin, Whoopi Goldberg, Bonnie Hunt and a few other notable names.

With Clash of the Titans, the Wolf Man, The A-Team, Kick-Ass and now Toy Story 3, 2010 is already shaping up to be a banner year at the movies!

And of course, with the TS3 announcement, there was already excitement at the San Diego Comic Con. To capitalize on the fervor, Mattel released an Exclusive Buzz Lightyear figure that we now have available at CmdStore! Take a look!
