While Austenitic Grain Size is a result of chemistry (composition), the changes that it evokes in our process are a result of material structure and properties, not just the chemical ‘ingredients.’

Steel that is fully deoxidized and grain refined is more sound, less susceptible to cracking and distorting, and more easily controlled in heat treat. Well worth it in final performance compared to the machinist’s increased tooling costs.

 Here are 5 Ways Austenitic Fine Grained steels can affect your shop:

1. Poorer Machinability than Coarse Grained Steels. (The hard oxides and nitrides resulting from deoxidation and grain refinement abrade the edge of tools and coatings- this is one reason that you go through more tooling on Fine Grained Steels.)
2. Poorer Plastic Forming than Coarse Grained Steels.
3. Less Distortion in Heat Treating than Coarse Grained Steels
4. Higher Ductility at the same hardness than Coarse Grained Steels
5. Shallower Hardenability than Coarse Grained Steels.

This is a look at Austenitic Fine Grain Steel.

Fine Austenitic Grain Size is a result of  DELIBERATELY ADDDING grain refining elements to a heat of steel. Because these grain refining elements have been added, the steel has a “Fine Austenitic Grain Size.”

In order to make steels with this Austenitic Fine Grained Structure, the steel is first deoxidized , (usually with  Silicon) and then Aluminum, or Vanadium or Niobium are added. Aluminum, Vanadium, and Niobium are called grain refiners.

 After  the Silicon has scavenged most of the Oxygen out of the  molten steel, the grain refiner is added. (In this post I’ll stick with Aluminum as the example.) The added Aluminum reacts with Nitrogen in the molten steel to form Aluminum Nitride particles. These tiny particles precipitate along the boundaries of the Austenite as well as with in the Austenite grains. This restricts the  growth of the grains.

Because the deoxidation and grain refinement  create hard abrasive oxide and nitride particles, they machine and process differently than coarse grained steels.

Fine Austenitic Grain Size appears on the material test report as an ASTM value of 5 or greater. Values of 5, 6, 7, 8, or “5 and finer”  indicate that  the material is Austenitic Fine Grained. Typically 7 or 8 was  reported for the Aluminum  Fine Grain steels that I certified.

The methods for determining Austenitic Grain Size are detailed in ASTM Standard E112, Standard Test Methods for determining Average Grain Size.

When it comes to many YouTube live concert videos, the sound quality is often pretty bad. The bass drowns out the rest of the instruments, and the sound is often too loud for the video camera to pick up without distortion.

Sometimes, though, you can use this distortion to your, the viewer’s, advantage: if the distortion actually emphasizes one instrument, like the guitar, over the others, you can better hear background guitar parts that you’ve never heard before, even on the album.

Here’s a great example of this: the bass drowns out the vocals in the live concert video of “I See Red” by  Uh Huh Her below. But, you can consequently hear the guitar part above all other instruments.

I wonder if there is a name for this because i’ve had it my whole life and recently i found someone else who got it too:  Sometimes i’ll just be sitting and i’ll notice my feet and they will appear really small or really large to me…to the point where it’s like…’what on earth…my feet look miniature’ as if i am looking at them through the wrong end of a pair of binoculars.  Another example is i’ll be hanging out in the mirror and i’ll notice a part of me and it’s like i’m looking in one of those carnival mirrors where it makes you really stout or really skinny but not in a “i need to go on a diet” kind of way but in a really curious someone’s-kidnapped-the-messenger-between-my-eyes-and-brain kind of way because i’m seeing something insanely distorted.  Other times i’ll get weird sensations, like just now i had the feeling i had to ‘take my hair off’ as if it were a wig.  Another time, a few years ago, i thought one of my hands was about to fall off and i flinched to catch it.  Several months ago me, and my friends were in the pub and out the corner of my eye i saw my friend kinda jump and he was staring at his hands.  When i turned and asked him what was wrong he said “i just realised i have hands” as if they were some alien gift that had been bestowed upon him just a few seconds earlier.  He continued to feel really alarmed at the sight of his hands for the rest of the night.  I suppose i kind of get it spiritually as well, i’ll suddenly realise i actually exist and feel as if i’m supposed to be doing something  and even though it only lasts a few minutes at the most, it’s a terrifying few minutes.  The sensation is like the feeling you get when you are about to jump off something really really high.  I just remembered something else which hasn’t happened in a while, but i get it a few times a year…sometimes it will be as if i am physically made up of several layers of me. So i’ll be running up the stairs and it’s like one or a few weren’t as fast as the first me and i’ll see a trail of ghost me’s that take literally miliseconds to catch up.  Like how you know you can set up your mouse cursor to have a trail of pointers when you move it?  It’s exactly like that and i usually say “whoa” when it happens because it looks crazy.

Maybe i have a brain tumour.

I’m not really a stickler when it comes to distortion in my images, but a flickr buddy of mine recommended PTLens to me a couple weeks go, and after giving it a try tonight, I decided to purchase it. For a mere $25, you get a program that will correct lens pincushion/barrel distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration, and perspective. You can technically achieve the same results in Photoshop, but what makes PTLens so special is how incredibly easy it is to correct an image. The first image above (top) is the corrected file from PTLens, and the second image is the original file. Notice the pretty apparent barrel distortion in the second image (vertical lines aren’t vertical), along with the perspective issues (the tops of the buildings seem to be leaning away from the camera), and how well these problems were fixed in the image above.

Here’s what the software looks like in action. PTLens has profiles set up for dozens of cameras and lenses (even for my Panasonic LX3!). It automatically pulls the camera and lens information from the image EXIF data, and based upon the lens’ unique distortion characteristics, applies the right amount of correction to barrel or pincushion distortion. I then manually dialed in a little vertical perspective correction, and that’s it! In seconds, I had corrected the image to my liking. I’m really excited about this new software, and plan to use it a whole lot for my photos, especially the ones that include architecture.

Nachdem die d16 Group in der Vergangenheit ja schon mit tollen Emulationen einiger kultiger Roland-Geräte (TR-808, TR-909 und TB-303) auftrumpfte, kam Mitte 2008 das erste Plugin aus der sog. SilverLine Collection auf den Markt.
Es erhielt den Namen Devastor und wurde fast schlagartig nur so mit Auszeichnungen überschüttet. Grund genug für den PluginHunter sich das Effekt-Plugin mal näher anzuschauen!

Das Markenzeichen der SilverLine Collection ist, wie es der Name schon vermuten lässt, das Erscheinungsbild in Silber! Aber damit nicht genug. Das Design ist derart realistisch, man könnte fast meinen es handelt sich hier um ein echtes Gerät, welches man bedient! Aber auch die Funktionalität leidet nicht unter dem anspruchsvollen Design, denn alle Regler und Knöpfe sind übersichtlich angeordnet und lassen sich gut erreichen und bedienen.

Features und Klang

Insgesamt lassen sich die Komponenten, die für den Klang zuständig sind, in drei Sektionen aufteilen.
Das Shaper-Modul, mit dem eine dynamische Vorverstärkung möglich ist, der Dioden-Clipper-Verzerrer sowie drei Filterbereiche.
Was bei den drei Filtern sehr schön gemacht wurde, ist die zusätzliche Möglichkeit mittels eines Pre- oder Post-Schalters das Signal vor oder nach der Verzerrung zu bearbeiten.
Jeder Filter besteht aus vier gleichen Reglern:

- Cutoff

- Filter Type (hier hat man die Wahl zwischen Tiefpass, Hochpass, Bandpass und Bandsperre)

- Reso/B.Width und

- Volume

Der Cutoff-Regler geht von 20Hz bis 12kHz und deckt somit alle relevanten Frequenzbereiche ab.

Im Test hatte ich eine Menge Spass, als ich den Multibandverzerrer auf Drums oder Synthsounds anwendete und so ganz entfremdete oder tolle neue Klänge erzeugen konnte.

Dabei eignet sich Devastor nicht nur für die Distortion sondern auch um die Dynamik einer Spur oder eines kompletten Songs (hier vorsichtig vorgehen!) zu bearbeiten.

Was mir auch noch sehr gut gefallen hat, ist der schön geordnete Preset-Browser. Hier sind für die einzelnen Bereiche (z.B. Drums, Acid Lines, Pianos, Pads, uvm.) schon passende Voreinstellungen hinterlegt, an denen man aber auch nach Herzenslust herumschrauben kann.

Fazit:

Devastor ist wieder einmal ein sehr gelungenes Plugin aus dem Hause d16 Group. Wie gewohnt kann man hier eine ausgezeichnete Qualität erwarten und bekommt sie auch. Ob er nun zur erweiterten Klangverformung oder einfach nur dazu benutzt wird um den Sound etwas mehr “dirty” klingen zu lassen, für Devastor ist dies alles gar kein Problem. Die mitgelieferte geordnete Preset-Auswahl trägt außerdem dazu bei, dass man schnell etwas geeignetes für jeden beliebigen Bereich findet.

Insgesamt gesehen gibt es von mir eine klare Kaufempfehlung, vor allem da man in dieser Preisklasse nichts vergleichbares findet!

HonestReporting Responds To Channel 4’s Falsified Investigation of the UK’s ‘Pro-Israel Lobby’.

On November 16, the UK Channel 4’s flagship documentary program, Dispatches, broadcast an investigation of ”one of the most powerful and influential political lobbies in Britain, which is working in support of the interests of the State of Israel”, directly attacking and smearing HonestReporting in the process.

PETER OBORNE INCITING PUBLIC TO HATE THE JEWISH NATION AND ITS PEOPLE!

“Despite wielding great influence among the highest realms of British politics and media, little is known about the individuals and groups which collectively are known as the pro-Israel lobby,” the program noted.

Aside from inventing a non-existent “lobby” that conjures up images of some of the worst forms of anti-Jewish prejudice, the documentary attempts to discredit and delegitimize HonestReporting and the thousands of its subscribers who care about accurate reporting of Israel in the media.

Julius Streicher (12 February 1885 – 16 October 1946) was a prominent Nazi prior to World War II. He was the founder and publisher of Der Stürmer newspaper, which became a central element of the Nazi propaganda machine. His publishing firm also released three anti-Semitic books for children, including the 1938 Der Giftpilz(“The Toadstool” or “The Poison-Mushroom”), one of the most widespread pieces of propaganda, which purported to warn about insidious dangers Jews posed by using the metaphor of an attractive yet deadly mushroom. After the war, he was convicted of crimes against humanity and executed.

While the program had been in the making for several months, it was only in the few weeks prior to the transmission when those UK Jewish communal and pro-Israel organizations targeted by C4 were contacted by Hardcash Productions and political commentator Peter Oborne.

We at HonestReporting found the premise of the entire program to be highly offensive and prejudiced. For, as commentator Tom Gross notes:

Whereas there is a pro-Israel lobby with some influence in the U.S. (though not the kind of influence ascribed to it by anti-Semites), contrary to what Channel 4 and others think, there is no effective pro-Israel lobby in Britain.

The complete lack of any effective pro-Israel lobby in Britain (as opposed to well organized anti-Israel groups) goes a long way to explaining why some of the coverage of Israel in the British media is among the worst in the world, and sometimes rivals the Iranian and Egyptian media for its sheer nastiness.

Others, including individuals and organisations targeted by C4 have already commented on the nature of the program, which we do not intend to dissect in its whole.

We do, however, wish to respond to the content aimed directly at HonestReporting that appears in the program from 35-42 mins .

IT ALL BEGINS A NEW!

CHANNEL 4 CONTACTS HONESTREPORTING

As the Jerusalem Post reported, the show producers sent an e-mail to HR Managing Editor Simon Plosker, asking him to justify his work.

“We would like to ask you in an interview about your role as managing editor of Honest Reporting and its part in ‘the battle for public opinion.’ We would like to ask you about its targeting of the British media, in particular e-mail campaigns against the Guardian and BBC. We would also like to ask you about your previous roles at BICOM, NGO Monitor and your work for the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit,” the letter read.

“We will be in Jerusalem on Monday and hope you will welcome the opportunity to explain your role as managing editor of Honest Reporting,” it concluded.

The e-mail was sent over Shabbat. The following Monday, the producers stormed into HonestReporting’s Jerusalem offices with cameras rolling, demanding to know where Plosker was.

“It was as if in an attempt to catch some sort of criminal activity. They demanded to know where I was, claimed that I was a ‘major player in the UK’ and asked whether I had something to hide,” Plosker told the JPost.

OBORNE’S SHODDY JOURNALISM

37 mins in, the program refers to harsh criticism of a March 2003 BBC documentary “Israel’s Secret Weapon” that set out to examine Israel’s alleged nuclear weapons capability. Oborne attributes more criticism of the BBC documentary to HonestReporting UK, despite the fact that HR UK was not actually established until 2006.

HonestReporting does not pass off the work of others as its own and neither should Oborne, who quotes from HonestReporting’s website:

The inference behind the film is that Israel would have been a more appropriate target than Iraq for coalition forces to attack.

In fact, HonestReporting never critiqued “Israel’s Secret Weapon.” The page Oborne read from was written in July 2004, more than a year afterwards. That communique, Documenting BBC Documentaries, was based on an exhaustive report by Trevor Asserson of BBC Watch: The BBC and the Middle East: The Documentary Campaign 2000-2004 and was but one paragraph of examples of Asserson’s work (which was fully attributed to Asserson by HR).

Perhaps Oborne could have found an example of where HR got it wrong over the BBC’s coverage, in an attempt to embarrass us. Instead it should be Oborne who is embarrassed. Oborne takes HR UK to task, using our criticism of Orla Guerin’s coverage of the Lebanon war (BBC’s Orla Exposed) as an illustrative example. Our critique was based on bloggers and media watchdogs comparing Guerin’s August 14, 2006 report with — of all news services – Channel 4.

Guerin and C4’s Alex Thomson were both in Bint Jbeil on the same day, yet had diametrically opposed descriptions of the scope of the town’s damage. In this case, it was Channel 4’s own coverage that revealed Guerin’s shocking reporting.

Instead, Oborne simply dismisses the critiques and responses of organizations such as HR to the BBC’s reporting. Hasn’t he, in fact, produced the evidence that our work is necessary, valuable and legitimate?

MISREPRESENTING HONESTREPORTING’S ETHOS

Oborne refers to a number of formal complaints and legal actions against the BBC during his segment on HonestReporting. In fact, while we support the efforts of others in the battle to hold the BBC accountable for its Mideast coverage, HR has never initiated any independent formal or legal actions against the BBC or any other media outlet.

The entire ethos of HR is to provide our subscribers with the information to use as they see fit. In this sense we are a purely grassroots organization rather than one that directly lobbies the media.

The many complaints to the BBC and other media outlets may be inspired by our work but they are written by individuals who have the right to be heard and to hold the media to account. If the BBC, by Oborne’s admission is forced to justify its output, then we have nothing to be ashamed of and our own subscribers can be proud that their efforts are having an effect.

UNWARRANTED INSINUATIONS

Oborne states:

It was time to find out who HonestReporting UK is, who funds it and who it represents.

Rather than insinuating that we have something to hide or operate in the shadows, Oborne, whose producer was in e-mail contact with HR’s Simon Plosker, could simply have asked. Had he done so, we would happily have explained that HR is a USA non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization as recognized by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as well as being a registered charity in Israel.

We would also have told Oborne that, aside from advertising, it is the donations of our thousands of supporters who help to keep our work going.

Turning to Plosker, Oborne said that he

admits he worked for BICOM in London and also for the Israeli Army Press Office.

Plosker doesn’t need to “admit” to anything as if it is a badge of shame. Our Managing Editor’s background is fully disclosed on our own website, where, presumably, Oborne found it.

HR regularly takes the media to task for its use of language. Oborne has deliberately changed the name of the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit to that of the “Israeli Army Press Office”. Why does this small change matter? Oborne now implies that Plosker deals directly with the foreign media in his role with the IDF. This, despite the fact that Plosker, in an e-mail to the program’s producer, stated specifically that he had never ever dealt with any media for the IDF and was, in fact, part of a separate branch of the unit.

We know that this e-mail was received and acted upon because the program quotes directly from it regarding HR’s responses to The Guardian and BBC.

Oborne is guilty of, at best, more shoddy journalism or, at worst, a deliberate distortion of the truth.

INVADING HR’S OFFICE

Bursting into HR’s Jerusalem offices with the cameras rolling displayed a particularly aggressive attitude on the part of Oborne and his producer. Following a discussion with a staff member of MediaCentral, a project of HonestReporting, Oborne insinuated a shadowy lack of physical presence from HR. This despite the fact that the MediaCentral staff member stated at the time that one member of HR’s staff is permanently working from that location.

(MediaCentral is a Jerusalem-based HonestReporting initiative, providing support services for foreign journalists. The association with HonestReporting is openly stated on MediaCentral’s web site.)

Indeed, HonestReporting could be termed a “virtual organization” simply due to the reality that in today’s world, one can set up an office from anywhere on the globe that has internet access. Is this really controversial or shadowy?

A CAMPAIGN, NOT AN INVESTIGATION

While Oborne may have been inventing a well-oiled pro-Israel lobbying machine, who was really doing the campaigning?

In a well-coordinated and specifically timed manner, an article and comment piece (by Oborne himself) appeared in The Guardian along with a full study pamphlet(again penned by Oborne) issued by the OpenDemocracy organization. The speed in which the documentary appeared on YouTube, posted by Channel 4 the day after the actual transmission, also raises eyebrows as to the impact that Oborne and C4 were hoping to produce.

ABUSING THE ANTI-SEMITISM CHARGE

Oborne’s documentary implies that many pro-Israel advocates automatically respond to anti-Israel coverage by hurling accusations of anti-Semitism against individuals or media outlets. Of course, not all criticism of Israel is anti-Semitic (although some of it is certainly motivated by such intent and it would be wrong to ignore its existence).

HonestReporting recognizes that accusing anyone, let alone a journalist or media outlet with anti-Semitism is a serious charge and is not one that we take lightly. An examination of hundreds of our communiques over the years will show that this accusation is very rarely used and only in cases where we believe that anti-Semitism is most definitely evident.

However, we also recognize that even if the intent may not be anti-Semitic, the consequences may be. Channel 4 itself has been responsible, through this documentary, for producing anti-Semitism, a prime example being Dispatches own website where the comments section on this program demonstrates some disgusting views that would not be out of place on neo-Nazi websites.

In addition, the increase in hate mail received by HonestReporting as a result of this documentary would suggest that it has had some impact on those who resort to vicious or anti-Semitic sentiments.
