Not surprising, i know. But still.<br />

<title><![CDATA[Install WINE]]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Wine (Microsoft Windows Compatibility layer) is one of the most loved softwares on Ubuntu. What it does is allows you to run Windows files on Ubuntu. Say you want to play a game which doesnt have a Linux counterpart, or say a software whose windows versions are popular, what do you do? Simple, install Wine and play the game exactly as you would on Windows!</p>
<p>So how do you install Wine? Well thankfully its in the Ubuntu repositories.</p>
<p>First up go to Ubuntu Software Center and type &#8220;Wine&#8221;, you&#8217;ll get the following search results:</p>

<p>Next select the Wine beta option (its better to select beta since it has loads of bug fixes compared to the stable version, ironically! <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' />  ) as shown in the previous pic and install it:</p>

<p>Thats it! Now whenever you come across a .exe file or any Windows supported file, just right click on it and select the option to open the file with Wine. It will then run exactly as it would on Windows.</p>

Extra Tips:</ul>
<p> </strong>Here&#8217;s some really useful info. Wine actually modifies your Firefox tahoma font and unfortunately that will make all your firefox fonts look really really weird! Eg. bold fonts would look like regular fonts etc. There&#8217;s a way to undo the damage without affecting Wine at all. What you need to do is go to System &#62; Administration &#62; Synaptic Package Manager. From there, search &#8220;ttf-tahoma-replacement&#8221; in the search bar. It will obviously be installed on your system (considering you&#8217;ve already installed Wine).

<p>To get Ubuntu <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download" target="_blank">click here</a>. Download the .iso file, and burn it to a CD/DVD.</p>
<p>One more thing, the installation instructions here are for Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala release), currently the latest version.</p>
<p><strong>Step 1:</strong> BIOS Changes &#8211;  Make sure your first boot device is set to your CD/DVD ROM. Save your settings and exit BIOS.</p>
<p><strong>Step 2:</strong> When you boot, this is the first screen you will get:</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Enter <strong>Ubuntu Tweak</strong>, a nifty and smart software which helps you install nearly all popular softwares not in the Ubuntu Repository.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">To install Ubuntu tweak, you need to select your Ubuntu version and type of processor. Download the package thats suitable for you from <a href="https://launchpad.net/ubuntu-tweak/0.4.x/0.4.9.2">here</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Save it on your hard drive and double click on the downloaded file. Click on the install option and wait for it to get completed.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ubuntu Tweak can be found in the System Tools under the GNOME Application menu.<br />
When the program loads, click on the Applications tab (of Ubuntu Tweak) and the on the Third Party Sources. Then click on the &#8220;unlock&#8221; button to unlock the programs (you might have to enter your password here). The pic elaborates it:</p>

<p>Installing a completely new operating system on your Mac sound a little daunting. <a href="http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/">VMware Fusion</a> takes out a lot of the hassle, and gives you the freedom to experiment with many operating systems. Many people use VMware Fusion or <a href="http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/">Parallels</a> to virtualize another operating system.</p>
<p>This guide will show you how to create a virtual machine, using a cool <a href="http://www.linux.org">Linux</a> distribution,</p>
<p><a href="http://www.ubuntu.com">Ubuntu 9.10: Karmic Koala</a></p>

<p>So lets get started</p>
<p>1. Download this free distribution of Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download"><strong>here</strong></a>.</p>
<p>2. Assuming you already own VMware go ahead and open it up, if not go ahead and download the demo <a href="https://www.vmware.com/tryvmware/?p=vmware-fusion&#38;lp=1"><strong>here</strong></a>.</p>

On the MenuBar click &#8220;File&#8221; then select &#8220;New&#8230;&#8221; or press Command+N</p>

<p>4. Since we downloaded Karmic Koala as a disk image (.ISO), we are going to select &#8220;Continue without disk&#8221;</p>

<p>5. You will receive another page with a few options, you&#8217;re going to want to select &#8220;Use Operating System Installation Disk Image File&#8221; and navigate to the 9.10 .ISO file.</p>

<p>6. Once you choose the right file, VMware should auto-detect the Operating System. If not, go ahead and set it to Linux, Ubuntu:</p>

The last page should come up next, it just reviews a few different options you set for the Virtual Machine. Don&#8217;t set the RAM usage too high or memory swaps will occur, and even if you&#8217;re running a multi-core machine, set it to 1 virtual processor:</p>

Once VMware Fusion creates the Operating System, you&#8217;re going to see it pop up in a list. Unless you have installed other Virtual Machines, you shouldn&#8217;t have any others on this window. I have installed <a href="http://www.thinkgos.com/">gOS</a> and <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/64bit/default.mspx">Windows XP Pro 64</a>.</p>

Go ahead and select the startup arrow button and Ubuntu will pop up in another window. Your install will start now, so unless you really like reading boring information about &#8216;How Awesome Ubuntu is&#8217; then go ahead and step away from the computer for a bit.</p>

<p>10. After a while you will have completed installing Linux Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala. Congratulations. Your Virtual Machine will reboot after the install. You will see some <a title="Ubuntu booting" href="http://michaellauden.wordpress.com/2009/10/14/disable-gui-boot-and-boot-os-x-into-console/">command line</a> flowing, followed by a log in screen:</p>

<title><![CDATA[Ubuntu Going Beyond a 'Distribution']]></title>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>I have been following the developments of the latest Ubuntu release, Ubuntu 9.10.  The release will include a <a href="http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/releasenotes/910overview">massive amount of new features</a>, extending from programming to features that benefit the end user.  It is within these new features that Ubuntu is moving beyond simply a repackaging of different Linux systems and applications to implementing features specifically created by and for the Ubuntu project.</p>
<p>One such example is the Ubuntu One feature, providing a file backup and sharing service &#8212; specifically for Ubuntu.  Another feature, a program called &#8220;Quickly,&#8221; will allow programmers to create applications for Ubuntu and share the resulting .deb files with other users.</p>
<p>The Ubuntu One feature especially catches my attention.  Not only is it officially provided by Canonical, but it also has a proprietary backend for the server.  I personally do not mind the proprietary nature of the program, but it adds an unusual twist to the distribution.  Officially a part of the installation, you have a feature that no other distribution offers or can offer in the same way.  Other distributions must provide the feature themselves, something that perhaps only Red Hat and Novell might have the capacity to do.  The rest of the community distributions are really out of luck on this feature.  Because of the proprietary nature, even the community distributions cannot even begin to implement a similar service using the code for the service as a base.</p>
<p>With the features above, Ubuntu is beginning to look different from some of the other distributions. Typically, distributions have software and features that are either the same or roughly equivalent to one another.  Ubuntu&#8217;s departure from this model is an interesting development, especially with reference to Ubuntu One.  Exactly how will the rest of the Linux community respond to Ubuntu providing features, that due to proprietary nature, cannot be used by the other distributions at all?  It will certainly be interesting to watch how these new features affect the Linux market.</p>
<p>Ubuntu 9.10 is due to be released on October 29, 2009.</p>

<p>Ο Μαρκ Σάτλουορθ κατάγεται από τη Νότια Αφρική και είναι πρόεδρος της εταιρείας <a class="zem_slink" title="Canonical Ltd." rel="homepage" href="http://www.canonical.com/">Canonical</a>, την οποία ίδρυσε το 2004. Είναι επίσης ο ιδρυτής του Ubuntu, που μεταξύ άλλων αποσκοπεί να πείσει τους καταναλωτές να χρησιμοποιούν το ελεύθερο σύστημα <a class="zem_slink" title="Linux" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux">Linux</a>. Το 1999 έγινε πλούσιος πουλώντας έναντι 575 εκατομμυρίων δολαρίων την εταιρεία του που ήταν εξειδικευμένη στην ασφάλεια στο χώρο της πληροφορικής. Τρία χρόνια αργότερα έγινε ο δεύτερος «διαστημικός τουρίστας», παραμένοντας μια εβδομάδα στον Διεθνή Διαστημικό Σταθμό. Από τότε που επέστρεψε στη Γη, ρίχτηκε σε μια φιλόδοξη περιπέτεια: να προτείνει μια δωρεάν εναλλακτική λύση στα Windows.</p>
<p>«Στην κοινότητα του ελεύθερου λογισμικού», λέει ο 36χρονος Σάτλουορθ σε συνέντευξή του στη Λιμπερασιόν, «απευθυνόμαστε σε ανθρώπους που ζουν σε οποιοδήποτε μέρος του κόσμου και είναι ειδικοί, ή απλώς ενθουσιώδεις, σε ένα συγκεκριμένο τομέα. Τους προτείνουμε να συνεργαστούν για να δημιουργήσουν ένα προϊόν που ανταποκρίνεται στην ειδίκευσή τους. Μπορεί να είναι ο πλοηγός <a class="zem_slink" title="Mozilla Firefox" rel="geolocation" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=45.1238,-123.1138&#38;spn=1.0,1.0&#38;q=45.1238,-123.1138%20%28Mozilla%20Firefox%29&#38;t=h">Firefox</a>, το σύστημα Linux ή η βάση δεδομένων <a class="zem_slink" title="MySQL" rel="homepage" href="http://www.mysql.com">MySQL</a>. Αυτό που κάνει το Ubuntu είναι να συγκεντρώνει όλα αυτά τα συστήματα και να τα θέτει στη διάθεση οποιουδήποτε πολίτη. Αυτό πολλαπλασιάζει την απήχηση του καθενός από αυτά τα συστήματα».</p>
<p>Η Canonical δεν θέλει να πάρει τη θέση της <a class="zem_slink" title="Microsoft" rel="homepage" href="http://www.microsoft.com">Microsoft</a>, λέει ο πρόεδρός της. Θέλει απλώς να αλλάξει τη βιομηχανία του λογισμικού, που είναι μια τεράστια βιομηχανία. <p><strong>Exercise 2</strong> was generally okay as well, except for some minor technical points. <p>WASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service today provided guidance for retirement plan administrators, plan participants and retirees regarding recent legislation affecting required minimum distributions. The Worker, Retiree, and Employer Recovery Act of 2008 waives required minimum distributions for 2009 from certain retirement plans.</p>
<p>Generally, a required minimum distribution is the smallest annual amount that must be withdrawn from an IRA or an employer’s plan beginning with the year the account owner reaches age 70½. The 2008 law waives required minimum distributions for 2009 for IRAs and defined contribution plans (such as 401(k)s) and allows certain amounts distributed as 2009 required minimum distributions to be rolled over into an IRA or another retirement plan. </p>
<p><a href="http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-09-82.pdf">Notice 2009-82</a> provides relief for people who have already received a 2009 required minimum distribution this year.  Individuals generally have until the later of Nov. 30, 2009, or 60 days after the date the distribution was received, to roll over the distribution. </p>
<p>The notice also provides guidance for retirement plan sponsors.  It contains two sample plan amendments that plan sponsors may adopt or use to amend their plans to either stop or continue 2009 required minimum distributions.  Both sample amendments provide that participants and beneficiaries can choose to receive or not to receive 2009 required minimum distributions.  Also, both sample amendments allow the employer to offer direct rollover options of certain 2009 required minimum distributions. </p>
<p>Plan sponsors may need to tailor the sample amendment to their plan’s particular terms and administration procedures and must adopt the amendment no later than the last day of the first plan year beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2011 (Jan. 1, 2012 for governmental plans).</p>

Ήδη έχει εισχωρήσει στα κινητά και πλέον σιγά-σιγά κερδίζει έδαφος και τα MIDs (<a class="zem_slink" title="Mobile internet device" rel="wikipedia" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_internet_device">Mobile Internet Device</a>). Και όχι απλά κερδίζει αλλά εκτοπίζει και όποιον βρεθεί μπροστά του. Ο επικεφαλής των φυλακών ζήτησε από τον κρατούμενο Douglas Havard να δημιουργήσει έναν εσωτερικό τηλεοπτικό σταθμό, ωστόσο ο Havard πήρε κάποιες πρωτοβουλίες που δεν προβλέπονταν από τη συμφωνία.<a href="http://e-pcmag.gr/news/60865">[next]</a></p></blockquote>

Λέμε «ελεύθερο» γιατί αποτελείται ως επί το πλείστον από ελεύθερο λογισμικό και βασίζεται στο <a class="zem_slink" title="Ubuntu" rel="homepage" href="http://www.ubuntu.com/">Ubuntu Linux</a> το οποίο τροποποιούμε (με μια διαδικασία που λέγεται remastering) με έξτρα πακέτα λογισμικού, για τις ανάγκες των μαθητών, αλλά και διαφορετικό γραφικό θέμα, εικονίδια και φυσικά λογότυπα, που να ταιριάζουν στο «κοινό» της διανομής.[<a href="http://www.sxolinux.gr/">next]</a></p></blockquote>
