1)Get deb:
Getdeb: http://www.getdeb.net/

Existe una extensa lista de
programas clasificados por su función.
Gnome Files: http://www.gnomefiles.org/
3) KDE apps:
KDE apps: http://www.kde-apps.org/
4) Appnr:
Appnr: http://appnr.com/
5) Distrowatch:
Distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/

6) Linuxtracker:
Linuxtracker: http://linuxtracker.org/

Check out openArtist. I frequent one of my favorite Linux websites every couple of days (Distrowatch.com) and this morning I found a link to openArtist which looks very promising for fans of open source software. Personally, I have found some really good open source software. Some of which rivals it’s commercial counterparts. I have had a blast with a mod for Gimp which sets it up to look similar to the Photoshop UI. Which makes it a little easier to transition between the two.

After looking at the package list that is included with openArtist it looks pretty promising. I am already running Ubuntu, so installing another Linux distro is probably out of my plans for the near future. But I will try to install some of these packages on my Ubuntu install for testing and let everybody know how it works out. In the meantime, if you are curious feel free to drop past their website and give it a try: openArtist.

I happened to chat with Jay Klepacs, aLinux creator, a little over a month ago (we’ve been friends since 2000s, during the PeanutLinux days).

If you’re wondering what aLinux was, it was a linux distribution derived from looplinux and was basically a hybrid of sorts (in it’s early days, it was very slackware linux inspired, but sporting rpms as it’s package format) and was featured in distrowatch years ago.

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20050829

I asked him how he was, and what’s up in aLinux land (which hasn’t seen a release for quite a while). In fact, I haven’t worked on pnutproject for quite a while either with Craig… real life since has taken over and I’ve been working quite busy for a start up company which I’ve been in for almost 3 years (never had so much fun programming and doing cool stuff with linux too!).

To make the long story short, aLinux lives, but not for distribution… yet. I don’t know if Jay would release it to the public either (it still uses KDE 3.5.x, btw which I still prefer over KDE 4.x).

Anyways, here’s the screenshot for you to enjoy. Have fun!

Peace…

Hes being reported as "lost for words". There will be no prancing around the stage in a sweaty shirt this week. Bad week for Microsoft?

So after we have seen some recent crowing by Microsoft in relation to advertising and a fishing program (who knows)?!? Now heres the not so good news. Digg is reported to have ended its exclusive advertising partnership with Microsoft over a year before it was due to expire. The deal, which began in 2007 was intended to be one for three years and one which Microsoft was (IMO) very proud of at the time.

“You’ll continue to see us be aggressive in this field,” said Steve Berkowitz at the time.

Well, you can be whatever you want. Difficult to be aggressive if youre not wanted though isnt it?

How about some more (IMO) crowing at the time by Stevie:

“Our collaboration with Digg is about bringing our advertising technology and sales force to one of the fastest-growing sites on the Web and a true innovator in user-generated content,”

One of the fastest growing sites that no longer seems to want your money, eh Microsoft?

PROPRIETARY SALES DECLINE IN FAVOR OF FOSS?

So it appears the global change in opinion is not simply limited to users being aware of alternatives? That might have been the first piece of bad news for Ballmer, second piece comes from

http://news.cnet.com/8301-13505_3-10223005-16.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

where there is an interesting article in waning sales of proprietary software and an increase in FOSS. Another change on the horizon? Since the ignorant or the MS faithful like to think that FOSS is simply Linux, we are seeing an increase in awareness and (IMO) take up of packages such as OpenOffice and who can leave out the inroads FireFox has made into IE’s market share?

Or what about this article entitled “Microsoft to open source: Please don’t compete on price!” http://digg.com/d1pC7T are we going to see some of those crocodile tears that were mentioned over at Boycott Novell recently?

Ive said repeatedly before, I am not in the habit of championing or praising rubbish. If FOSS was not (in my honest held opinion) better than the proprietary alternatives I have previously used at home, then I would not be here. I have yet to find an area of computing/IT “off limits” to me because of my choice of OS/software solutions, infact I find its quite the opposite, I am far more productive at home since I migrated to 100% FOSS a long time ago. Ive never regretted it.

If you have been considering giving Linux a go, you should consider Ubuntu as a very good place to start. This userfriendly distro allows new users to easily experience Linux (with a massive helpful community). In the next few days Ubuntu 9.04 will be released, what better time to give it go? Visit: http://www.Ubuntu.com there are of course many other distros available and in my opinion you wont go far wrong with many of the mainstream ones visit: http://www.distrowatch.com

ORACLE/SUN – BALLMER LOST FOR WORDS?

I think its quite old news that Oracle have bought Sun (reportedly to the surprise of both Microsoft and IBM)

The lovable Stevie Ballmer (who always puts me in mind of a used car salesman) was apparently lost for words when approached in Moscow by reporters and asked about his opinions on the Oracle/Sun deal. “I need to think about it,” was allegedly all he could manage, which is in stark contrast to the Ballmer we know and love: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvsboPUjrGc (Watch that Ballmer strut his stuff!)

You can read an article in regards to our “thinking” favorite CEO with links over on Cnet: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13860_3-10223089-56.html?part=rss&subj=news&tag=2547-1_3-0-20

#FAIL @ KINGS CROSS

Whilst monitoring #Microsoft over on Twitter, I bumped into this very nice chap who had taken one of the always amusing Microsoft fail photos.

After the photographer dancraig had taken this, he proudly placed it on twitpic and was announced on #microsoft by Giles Phelps . What happened next for me was interesting, since he reported on his Twitter a short while later:

“my recent tweets about #microsoft #fail at #KingsCross has gained me a follower from said company & quite a few port sniffs…?!”

Who is port sniffing Giles Phelps?

Why has he recieved a follower from Microsoft?

After this was posted he then goes on to say a short time later:

“Ok so now I have two employees of #microsoft following me… Is this corporate stalking…? I need a retweets to save me..!!! #RT”

These type of antics have been discussed on other sites, and even here I recieved the Microsoftlegal follower around the time I challenged Microsoft on the #microsoft tag within Twitter. I would like to stress that I do not know if Microsoftlegal is legit or not, which makes me think I should send an email to Microsoft informing them. If it is legit, fine. If its not, its another Optionetics type fake Ive exposed.

I have to thank dancraig for giving me permission to use his excellent photo. You can visit him on twitter: http://twitter.com/dancraig

Choosing your distro
Once you figured out if you really want to give GNU/Linux a try, you have to choose your flavor. I’ll give you a little advice along with some info from distrowatch.com.
In order to make an informed choice, you have to understand that the differences between the distros are not likely to be in the Look and feel. The main differences between most distros are:

The binary packages that they use. Most used are .deb and .rpm, tough there are some others.

How they solve dependencies. Let me explain. when you install an app in GNU/Linux, you have to install the core app package and some other packages the app requires, in most cases. Some distros, handle the installing and uninstalling of this packages y themselves. Other distros, let you have some control over it. And Other distros just expect you to handle most of this by yourself.

Compatibility with some architectures

The Desktop Enviroment they use (Look And Feel)

So, first of all pick your DE. Most popular distros use either GNOME or KDE. Some offer an alternative with Xface.

Here i depict the top used distros’s pros and cons in no particular order of preference, they are ordered by DE.

KDE by default

This distros have K Desktop Enviroment as a default DE, altough some of them offer Other DE alternatives, in most cases GNOME. Keep in mind that KDE 4,1 is still in heavy development. But Soon We’ll Have KDE 4.2.

The latest release of Ubuntu, 8.10, has just come out. The list of new features seems to be quite modest; it’s mostly upgrades to the newest upstream packages and some small tweaks like an encrypted personal folder and guest sessions. I am tempted to try it out, but I don’t need any more upcoming distractions! I haven’t touched the desktop in at least a month now–it has Sidux on it–so when exams are over and some more bugs in 8.10 have been found and fixed, I might install Ubuntu on it again.

That’s if the cd drive is still capable, though; I suspect it’s on its last legs. The last couple of burns I did on it were of questionable quality, and it is making an awful lot of noise during reading. Oh well. I don’t really like using it anymore, because I have discovered the joy of having a laptop and being able to easily relocate it.

Been too busy in real life to write here much, although I have been keeping up with Linux news every day. The distrowatch comments area is rife with KDE defenders and critics after the Distrowatch Weekly slammed KDE’s usability. I tend to agree that KDE hasn’t caught up to where it used to be in the 3.x series, but the article felt like it was dredging up old news specifically to have something to say regardless of its newsworthiness. I prefer Gnome/GTK to KDE/Qt; the latter seems to have a more restrictive range of software, though truth be told some of them are said to be better than their GTK equivalents (Rhythmbox vs. Amarok, Brasero vs. K3b, to name two typical examples). Not to mention I’ve spent a considerable amount of time trying to learn how to program in GTK already.

So that’s it for my mostly worthless blog post today.
