Yes, they are two 17-year-old twins having fun. Collectively known as “Jedward,” I like them to the extent that they are making a mockery of the whole formulaic approach to finding talent on television. Anything that brings down shows like “X Factor” and “American Idol” is fine with me.

They are no reason to watch “X Factor,” though. Now it’s just boring singing coupled with bad singing.

That’s my rant. I had to bring it up because the media here is filled with the twins since they are from Ireland.

I’ve been doing a lot of nothing lately. It is kind of making me go crazy. When I first got to Dublin there was so much to do. Everyone wanted to hang out and explore the city. Dublin was a huge scavenger hunt.

The other day I got a little of that exploring spirit back in me and went to the Chester Beatty Library. They have tons of old religious manuscripts and books from all over the world.

Today was more of the nothing I have been experiencing as of late. I wrote 1/10 of an essay in about ten minutes and then spent the rest of the day watching various episodes of various television shows. I intermittently glanced at German nouns and verbs. I did a short workout I’ve been doing with the exercise equipment left over from past roommates. It’s actually fun to have a chin-up bar in my bedroom doorway. There’s also these handy handles for pushups.

I expected to gain more study abroad friends while here, but the school is a lot different than I expected. At the Dublin Institute of Technology students don’t pick their classes, but have a set curriculum. Only two things are chosen: a language and where they study abroad their spring semester of their junior year.

The students form tight-knit groups from being in the same classes every year. Us Americans throw a kink in the system by hopping classes.

Also, I don’t think Irish students here have as much an interest in the foreign exchange students as Americans tend to have toward foreigners. We are just an interruption, a faceless, changing rotation of students from various countries. This opinion is shared by my Irish cultural studies professor (who teaches a predominately international group), so I feel validated in stating it.

I am a shy person, which is obviously a hindrance. If I had stayed at the dorm, it might have helped. I could not afford the exorbitant prices, though. It’s a lot more romantic living off O’Connell anyways.

My roommates are at very different points in their lives. We are cordial and they make me laugh sometimes, but that is about it. Overall, we are quite a rag tag group. With a little more time and a good script, we might make it past the pilot episode.

Not to say this has been a regrettable decision. I have had some great experiences here. I am merely at a slump in the semester. School is almost over and Dublin has lost its romantic spark for me. It was never a bright spark, but it was there. Classes were less-than stimulating and held sparingly. I couldn’t get a job due to tightened restrictions after the Celtic tiger stopped roaring. I was stuck being poor with a lot of time and not a lot of things to stimulate me.

Mostly, I miss music. The scene here is thin and starving.

I am really looking forward to my girlfriend visiting in December. Everything is fine when she is around.

We are going to make a band with her friend when I get back. Our band name is Gorgeous. It will be trade-off folk and punk with everyone trading instruments and vocals. I think it is going to be epic.

This week my group is working on developing the DIT website.  None of us have ever designed a website before, but the idea is great.  It’s a community project based social website.  The goal is to reduce the “stuff” and get people involved with their neighbors. 

Ça fait plusieurs fois que je veux me faire faire les ongles d’orteils par la fille qui fait la pédicure à l’africaine.

Elle se promène avec un plateau sur la tête avec plein de pots de vernis à ongles et avec ses instruments pour faire la job.  C’est ça job, la pédicure à l’africaine.

Elle a, entre autre, un petit tabouret africain sur lequel elle met ses fesses et puis elle dépose un pagne sur ses genoux.  Le client s’assis devant elle et dépose son pied sur ses genoux.

Elle commence la job avec des ciseaux pour enlever les rainures des ongles en te tripotant chacune de tes orteils, coupe les ongles, lime les ongles, caresse les orteils en mettant de l’alcool pour désinfecter. (Ça refroidit les orteils).

Un petit coup de pinceau avec le vernis transparent.  Le vent de la mer s’occupe du reste pour le séchage.

Un beau moment au soleil…..

My first day of college was daunting; I did not know a soul. Luckily, day one of college involved what can only be termed an “integration exercise” to facilitate students’ getting to know one another. My “integration group” consisted of ten people. Everyone took part in tasks such as learning one another’s name using association games. Hours later we were blind folded and touching one another (often inappropriately), trying to guess the identity of the misfortunate subject. At the start of the day I knew no one. Hours later, I knew the name of my entire group. I even knew some random information about them.

At the end of our get-to-know-each-other-day we hit the pub. By three in the afternoon I was sitting the Hill 16 on Gardiner Street with my group, making banter over a pint of Bud. This was my first day of college. I hoped everyday thereafter would be the same as that day. As the hours creeped in, the numbers dwindled. Eventually, I was left with two red heads – Aoife and Fiona. This was the day I met Fiona, the girl I am good friends with to this very day.

Fiona has been a great friend over the years. We have never lived in one another’s pockets, but always made time for one another throughout college and our working lives. If one of us was blue, the other listened. We have had seriously funny moments in the past and will continue to do so long into the future. Fiona moved to Australia last year. I spoke to her by phone for the first time in a year on Sunday night. Although the line was bad, it was nice to hear from her. I have been thinking of her a lot since then.

She and I often make reference to the time I came out to her. This was around the end of my first academic year. I had worked through countless issues with my sexuality and was gradually revealing myself to one and all. Fiona was someone I wished to tell. The moment came late one night when Fiona and I were on the Mystery Tour*. We had been drinking almost ten hours at this stage. Booze always made the task lof coming out seem less daunting.

Fiona sat at a table with some students from my class. I shimmied in next to her. We attempted conversation over the loud music that blared through Rockin’ Robins, Carrick on Shannon. I stooped as close to her as I could without disturbing her friends.

“Fiona, I have something important to tell you?” I shouted into her ear.

“What, Steve?” Fiona clearly struggled to hear me over the music. She leaned forward, almost falling off her stool.

“I have something to tell you!”

“What?”

“I need to tell you something you probably already know. It’s important for our friendship that I tell you for the sake of it”

Fiona leaned away from me. She looked down and placed her hands on her lap as if contemplating something. “I think I know what you are going to say, Steve.”

“You do?” I asked. I was elated she would make this easier on me.

“I’ve known for a while. I have been meaning to talk to you. I know how you feel and I can honestly say I just don’t feel the same.” She looked at me sympathetically.

Shock coursed through me. “Eh, I’m gay.”

“You’re gay?” she asked in surprise.

“Yes, gay.”

Alcohol deleted my remembrance of her reaction to this news. Since I know Fiona well, I imagine she laughed uncontrollably in the incredibly contagious way she does. She probably even banged the table in front of her.

This was been a defining time in our friendship. I even laugh away to myself as I recall it. When we are alone, and I suggest we do something, Fiona will often respond by saying “sorry Steve, but I just don’t feel the same”. It never fails to induce laughter.

I miss you babe. Look after yourself.

*The Mystery Tour involved setting out around 11AM with the intention of visiting three mystery nightclubs over about fourteen hours. The freakiest moment was dancing in a nightclub in Enfield at 3PM in the afternoon. Some windows had been blacked out with bin liners. We finished up in Rockin’ Robins in Carrick on Shannon. I remember getting home at 6AM the next day. It probably took me a week to recover.

Remember the days when hipsters were wearing keffiyeh scarves, probably having no idea they were aligning themselves with militant extremists for the sake of trendiness? Let’s hope that all those cheap Urban Outfitter rags are tattered and tossed and everyone goes back to a good old-fashioned scarf that actually provides some level of warmth!

Well… not “good old-fashioned” scarves. I want a drapey continuous scarf! (I’ve typed the word “scarf” so many times now… what a silly word! scarf scarf scarf!) Seriously though, these look so cozy and squishy and sincerely snug and they’re such a nice departure from long tails catching in car doors, getting sat on and nearly choking yourself, and getting wet in public sinks. These are pretty much a no-brainer with a few different styling and warmth options.

The green one is from etsy shop I’ll be Yarned and the second is from Tortillagirl. Etsy has so many color options available but you’re paying for the handmade aspect. Knitting is no joke. (I much rather prefer a dark grey. These make me want to get my knitting needles out again. You can try your hand at a diy project- just knit your normal scarf and stitch the ends together!)

These multi-loop handmade cotton scarves from Necklush (also on etsy) have been all over the interwebs. I am in love with this concept and their richness. Here is a sweet diy tutorial to make your own out of old t-shirts.

This knit scarf from Assembly New York can also be worn as a snuggly hood but it’s tattered and worn, which gives it a lot of character. At over $100 I would rather do my own damage over time… just let my cats have a field day. This looks like it could be replicated with a old huge thrifted sweater, cut and stretched to hell.

Som du ved, min eneste blog relaterede regel er, at tiden ikke tillader mig at læse og kritik scripts. Jeg vil have til at opgive sådanne luksusforbrug som sove og spise.
