The Telegraph has this on the suicide bomber at the CIA base:

[A] former senior intelligence official told the Associated Press that the man was being courted as an informant and that it was the first time he had been brought inside the camp.

The official said a senior and experienced CIA debriefer came from Kabul for the meeting, suggesting that the purpose of the session was to gain intelligence.

That official and another former intelligence officer with knowledge of the attack spoke to the news agency on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak publicly.

The CIA would not confirm the details, and said it was still gathering evidence.

“It’s far too early to draw conclusions about something that happened just yesterday,” said spokesman George Little.  snip

And that information sure is not in the FP article in the NYT on the bombing… which still flails around.

[T]he use of an army uniform raised the possibility that the uniform was stolen or that the Afghan National Army ranks had been infiltrated by insurgents, a potentially more serious and pervasive problem.

The attack happened close to dusk, when some people on the base were finishing their daily work and relaxing or taking a break before dinner or before returning to their offices for the evening.

A NATO official said the bomber managed to elude security and reach an area near the base’s gym. Among other questions raised was whether the bomber worked at the base and had clearance, or if a security slip allowed him to gain entry. snip

With its year in, year out clockwork precision, The Nutcracker is a balletic dish to be sampled sparingly. Too many Spanish chocolates, Sugar Plums and Candy Canes and up go your cholesterol levels. Too few and you might be the only one missing out on the best of the season’s treats. For that reason you’d better choose productions wisely. Preferably – and your arteries will thank you for this – you’d try something that delivers the goods while leaving aside the “OTT” sickly sweeties, such as Sir Peter Wright’s staging for The Birmingham Royal Ballet.

If we’ve all seen The Nut so many times why do we keep returning in the first place? Throughout the years the ballet has left its personal imprint on us, just like an old friend. We might think of the days when we would put on our prettiest dresses, like so many little girls still do, and look up to brave Clara. Her courage to turn her nightmare into dreams, defeating the mouse king (or, in this version, King Rat) to save her Nutcracker prince with bonus reward of a journey to a magical sugary land has given us much to consider about girl power.

With a firm focus on our Clara and her coming-of-age tale, Birmingham Royal Ballet’s  production had the children around us enthralled, gasping, applauding and rooting for our heroine and her Nutcracker prince. In this staging Clara is a ballet student and her mother an elegant former ballerina whose exquisite red dress is a dead giveaway for designer John Macfarlane’s source of inspiration: très chic Bergman’s Fanny and Alexander. Before her godfather Drosselmeyer shows up with the Nutcracker, Clara’s first Christmas gift is a ballerina doll which will later become the Sugar Plum Fairy and dance the Grand pas de deux with the Nutcracker Prince. In this way the Sugar Plum is a sort of dreamlike projection of what the grown-up Clara might one day become.

On Saturday matinée the role of Clara was danced by soloist Momoko Hirata, with young whiz kid Joseph Caley as her Nutcracker Prince. Both Momoko and Joseph have the advantage of looking very young which, on top of their dramatic skills, help make their characterisations all the more convincing. Momoko’s soft arms and graceful steps shape a young girl with her ballerina  dreams who blushes when close to her young suitor.  From his first dance with Clara Joseph displays his clean technique and princely lines foreshadowing his later appearance as Cavalier to the Sugar Plum Fairy – the very charming Ambra Vallo. He is a most attentive partner with a smile that could melt many a young maiden’s heart. Mothers beware.

Elsewhere in the ballet both of Tchaikovsky’s gorgeous waltzes, for Snowflakes and Flowers, showcase the company’s great energy and style, making this Nutcracker come alive in a way that the Spanish, Arabian and Chinese divertissements cannot quite match up to. Besides the lovely duo of Caley and Vallo, these are my own favorite moments, but I suspect that for kids the deal clincher might be entirely different: between the giant Christmas tree, the mice that scurry from a glowing fireplace to thunderous applause and Clara’s flight on the back of a snow goose, the youngsters are spoiled with three Christmas miracles wrapped in one beautiful Victorian package.

La présentatrice franco-japonaise Cristel Takigawa va prochainement participer à une nouvelle émission d’information baptisée Oshiete Mr. News (Enseignez-moi, Monsieur Actualité). Présentée en collaboration avec le comédien Shinya Ueda et le journaliste Akira Ikegami, ce magazine de vulgarisation, destinée à un large public, s’attachera à expliquer de façon didactique des faits d’actualité. Après avoir récemment quitté son poste de présentatrice du journal télévisé, Cristel Takigawa se dit ouverte à d’autres projets d’émissions, comme des programmes musicaux ou des documentaires.

La jeune pianiste de 14 ans, Aimi Kobayashi, qui a récemment reçu le premier prix de l’International Chopin Piano Competition dans la catégorie « junior », débutera au mois de février 2010 au Japon. Ce jeune prodige n’en est pas à sa première distinction puisqu’il avait déjà reçu un prix similaire l’année précédente. De plus, Aimi Kobayashi a eu l’immense privilège de se produire 3 fois au Carnegie Hall à New York et a récemment signé un contrat avec l’honorable maison de disque EMI CLASSICS. (Dans la deuxième vidéo, on la voit jouer à… 4 ans.)

Le 23 novembre, la chaine de télévision NHK a dévoilé les chanteurs sélectionnés pour participer à sa plus grande émission de l’année, le 60ème Kouhaku Utagassen. Cette fois, plus de 50 groupes et artistes participeront pour la première foois à ce grand show populaire, dont ARASHI, Kaera Kimura, Yusuke, Nana Mizuki, flumpool, Remioromen, FUNKY MONKEY BABYS et NYC boys.

Cosmic Box, le nouveau single de YUKI, est sorti le 18 novembre dernier. Cette chanson, spécialement composée pour le film Magare ! Spoon !, a été enregistrée en direct. La chanteuse y exprime ses sentiments en évoquant la vie d’une femme confrontée à des épreuves difficiles et déterminée à s’en sortir.

Le groupe de visuale-kei HANGRY&ANGRY a sorti son premier album le 18 novembre. Leur site MySpace, en ligne depuis le mois octobre 2008 totalise plus d’un million de visites. Encouragé par ce succès, le mini-album Kill Me Kiss Me a été diffusé au Japon, en Asie, en Europe et même aux Etats Unis. A l’origine de cette formation, on retrouve Hitomi Yoshizawa et Rika Ishikawa, ex-membres du groupe Morning Musume. Par ailleurs, le groupe bénéficie du partenariat de la marque de gotic lolita h.NAOTO et Gashicon, style Gro-Kawa (contraction de grotesque et kawaii).

Vendredi soir dernier c’était la nuit de la culture à Örebro et plein d’activités gratuites étaient offertes. De la musique classique au high school band en passant par la lecture de poème et même des cours de danse de tango.

Les spectacles se déroulaient à différents endroit dans la ville d’Örebro tels que: konserthus, kulturhuset, musikhögskolan, etc. Karin et moi sommes allés au konserthus à deux minutes à pied de notre appartement. Nous avons regardé quelques groupes de musique ensemble tandis que par la suite Karin a voulu essayer le cours d’introduction de danse tango. Dû à mon expérience avec les cours de danse Lindy Hop que j’ai pris à Stockholm, j’ai préféré aller écouter tout en buvant un petit café dans la salle d’à côté un petit orchestre, d’environ huit musiciens aux cheveux blancs, qui jouait de la musique classique mélodieusement.

La chanteuse Mari Yaguchi a présenté devant la presse son rôle dans le quatrième épisode du jeu Ryuu Ga Gotoku qui paraîtra au printemps 2010 sur la console Playstation 3. Ce jeu d’aventure et d’action immersif, destiné aux adultes, plonge le joueur dans le milieu de la mafia japonaise et lui offre toute une palette de sentiments et de valeurs passionnels et contradictoires : l’amour, la haine, la fidélité, la traîtrise. L’histoire se déroule principalement dans un quartier populaire, s’inspirant de Shinjuku, composé de bars, cabarets et autres machines à sous.

Mari Yaguchi fait partie des célèbrités, avec l’actrice Maju Ozawa et l’acteur Hiroki Narimiya, qui apparaissent dans le jeu sous les traits d’un personnage fictif. Elle y incarne une employée de salon de massage. L’expérience lui a beaucoup plu même si elle s’est étonnée de la crudité des paroles dans le jeu. Elle s’est dite par ailleurs satisfaite de sa modélisation en 3D, même si, selon elle, le corps n’est pas aussi ressemblant que la tête.

Le 12 novembre le groupe AKB48 s’est rendu à l’émission Waratte Iitomo, diffusée sur la chaine Fuji TV. 33 membres étaient présents sur le plateau. Devant la profusion d’invités, le présentateur Tamori n’a pas pu laisser le groupe présenter son actualité. En effet, l’émission s’est terminée à peine les présentations de chacun des membres finies… Tamori étaient néanmoins content d’avoir vu autant de jeunes filles en même temps.

Le film, MW, adapté d’une des oeuvres les plus sombres et violentes du mangaka Osamu Tezuka est sorti en DVD le 6 novembre dernier. Le manga qui a longtemps fait polémique, n’avait jamais pu être adapté au cinéma notamment du fait de sa très grande violence. Il raconte l’histoire d’un homme, incarné par Hiroshi Tamaki dans le film, haut cadre du secteur bancaire le jour et serial killer la nuit, qui trouve refuge auprès d’un prêtre pour se confesser de ses crimes. Un mystérieux accident sur une île 16 ans auparavant pourrait être à l’origine de ses troubles.

Le 3 novembre à Tokyo a eu lieu l’avant-première du film Ururu no mori no monogatari (histoire de la forêt de Ururu). Sur scène, face aux journalistes, étaient présents les acteurs Eiichiro Funakoshi et Kyoko Fukada. Cette comédie fantastique et familiale, au message optimiste, raconte des histoires miraculeuses rendues possibles par l’amour d’une famille. L’actrice Kyoko Fukada, qui venait de fêter son 27ème anniversaire la veille, a reçu pour cadeau une grande poupée de Ururu (le nom du chien dans ce film). Ururu no mori no monogatari sortira le 19 décembre.

Le 5 novembre, l’actrice Yui Aragaki a annoncé son rôle dans le prochain film du réalisateur Nobuhiro Doi. Elle y interprètera une jeune femme de 18 ans originaire d’Hokkaido qui étudie à l’université à Tokyo puis qui part travailler à l’étranger comme business women. Pendant toutes ces années, elle ne cessera de penser au même garçon rencontré 10 ans auparavant au lycée. Ce film raconte une grande histoire d’amour inspirée de la célèbre chanson Hanamizuki interprêtée par la chanteuse Hitotoyou. Seront également présents dans le film les acteurs Toma Ikuta et Msamu Mukai. Ce film sortira en été 2010.

Sony Computer Entertainment a dévoilé leur nouveau “PSP value pack“. Il s’agit d’un coffret comprenant une console PSP (modèle PSP-3000), un memory stick 6 GO et un étui PSP Pouch. Vendu au prix de 19800 yen, ce coffret sera disponible en plusieurs coloris : black piano, Pearl White, Radiant Red et Vibrant Blue. La commercialisation du “PSP value pack” sera limitée dans le temps. Elle débutera le 3 décembre et finira le 31 décembre 2009. Par ailleurs, le 10 décembre sortira un autre coffret, baptisé “Hunters Pack“, comprenant une PSP-3000 de couleur bleue et le jeu Monster Hunter 2nd G. Son prix est fixé à 18500 yen.

Le 17 octobre à l’Aichi Kouka Université, Masamichi Hayashi, Directeur du Centre de Recherches Océanographiques a présenté des robots capables d’évoluer dans l’eau, destinés à l’océanographie. Tous les robots sont fabriqués à l’aide d’objets recyclés récupérés dans des poubelles comme par exemple des bouteilles en plastique, des imperméables ou des parapluies. Pourtant, leur aspect final ne laisse pas deviner l’origine des composants.

L’origine de sa passion vient du fait qu’un jour il est tombé malade et a séjourné à Okinawa pour son traitement. Pour se distraire, il a ramassé des détritus échoués sur les plages et a eu l’idée d’en faire des objets en forme de poissons. Parce que des enfants lui ont demandé d’en faire des objets mobiles, il en est finalement venu à fabriquer des robots sous-marins.

hmm It occurred to me though that Maria and Arnold might want one so I thought I’d google up a fast article on the item… made by a Russian firm, Russo-Baltique..  (proceed to fret, we are being outdone in the gargantuan division – I say, thanks be to someone’s god!)

If four-wheel-drives weren’t politically incorrect enough, a Russian car maker is offering one with whale penis leather trim. By RICHARD BLACKBURN.

A Russian armoured-car builder is boasting that its latest vehicle has seats covered with “whale-penis leather”.

The €1 million ($1.6 million) Dartz Prombron Monaco Red Diamond Edition armoured car has been developed by the same company, RussoBaltique, that built armoured vehicles for Tsar Nicholas, Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky.

On its official website, the company says the whale-penis leather is the same as that used by Greek shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis on the yacht Christina O.

Onassis is rumoured to have had some of the barstools on the yacht, the world’s most expensive at the time, covered in the controversial leather.  . . . . .

…it all seems so long ago, but we should be relieved there is continuum! Lest the firmament tear!

For those wondering just how may whales may need to be harvested to outfit the special edition, the answer is not many. The penis of the Blue Whale, for example, can grow up to 2.4 metres.

Maybe they should just ship a whole one, along with the … car.  Tank.  Whatever it is.

I am under the weather… so putting up a shot of a day at the beach in Rio.  And it does look very lovely.

Well… there is this… quite by accident I clicked on Rigorous Intuition which had appeared to fall fallow many months ago.  But by luck there was a new post, from September 3 2009…
