Unity in division is still division. Unity against a common enemy is still division. Fractured by our wants, and by our beliefs, we can never know a love so pure. Fractured by our hate and disdain for our fellow man, we can never know ourselves. So often man condemns his brother and sister without knowing he is truly condemning himself. What mans hates in others, he hates of himself. And in hating of himself, he feeds of the Tree of Deception.

Man proclaims himself a Christian, or a Muslim or a Jew, and yet he calls his brother enemy. He justifies his hate with the hate of another man, and then wonders why he his heart is in pain. He calls his neighbor a liar and a thief, and then wonders why his heart feels empty. He strikes out in anger and frustration and then wonders why his tears are bitter. There is no unity in division, and yet that is they way he wants it.

Serve your master or serve your heart. I have no master, for you are all my brothers and sisters.

Bill O’Reilly, the unrepentant sexual harasser and “fuck-it” guy with his buddy Ann Coulter the bigoted pusher consider themselves Christian. It is not surprising they are both part of the American Taliban (Christian Conservative Movement) and ready to fight the next religious war by joining the rhetoric of the Manhattan Declaration which they believe “is the only hope for preventing America from sliding into totalitarianism and Nazi-like dictatorship.”. It seems they haven’t studied the Nazi Socialist Movement of America that appear to support their exact same views.

We can count on Bill O’Reilly (the Christian “fuck-it” guy) to traffic in hate and work to divide America…..US verses THEM…just like the Nazi Socialist Movement and the KKK.

So of course they have not problem promoting the conservative lie that health care reform will provide subsidies for women to have abortions. Apparently, being Christian, allows them to lie without a conscience as their magical superstition named Jesus Christ forgives them invisibly as long as they show their respect and drink wine and crackers in his name.

The Roadster is the speed horse of the show ring, and these driving and riding classes are exciting to watch because of the fast pace set by competitors. Horses must be of the Standardbred breed or of the Saddlebred type, of attractive appearance, balanced in conformation and with manners which make them safe risk in the ring. There are also classes offered specifically for the popular Roadster ponies under 12.2 hands(50 inches). All Roadsters are shown at 3 different speeds of the trot: jog, road gait, and trot at speed; “breaks” (cantering/galloping) are penalized. At all speeds, the Roadster should work in form with straight and true action. Animation and show ring presence should characterize the road horse, especially at the jog and road gait. Roadsters being driven or ridden enter the ring in a clockwise direction at a jog, and are then asked to road gait, then turn to a counter clockwise direction and jog, road gait, and trot at speed. The are bike(two-wheeled vehicle) and wagon(or buggy)(four-wheeld vehicle) classes. Usually, the buggy horse is larger than the bike horse. When Roadsters are ridden under saddle, it makes for a very wild and enthusiatic crowd, which makes the class very enjoyable.

Is there a dating class? If so, how does one determine their dating class? In sports sanctioned and un, there are classes/divisions to determine your aptitude, skill, prowess, agility, and so forth, should there be dating classes/divisions as well? Are there dating classes? Should we all be dating in our own class/division or should we be reaching for the next level?

What is your class/division? How is it determined? Is it relative or solely based on perception? If perception, then whose? Yours? Others? Theirs? Or maybe past dating history? What about those that always date outside of class/division? Do they then get ranked on different criteria? Does this add or diminish their overall rating?

What about the interwebs and the total inclusion of all classes in a nameless faceless arena? Does this preclude the class/division ranking? In a society where everyone can be whoever they want on the Internet, is class/division ruled out?
Is getting to know your nameless, faceless partner the new dating class? Does it make the inevitable meet up, sharing of factual information & pics, more or less anxiety ridden?

What about those folks who share intimate details or meet with the object of their affection immediately? Deciding, all at once, to ignore division in favor of compatibility or out sheer loneliness? Does this work? Or is it just another tragic misfire in their dating escapades?

I, myself, am an equal opportunity dater. Give anyone the chance and they just may surprise you; however, that being stated, I am single at the moment.

This isn’t the post I was going to write. But, I’ll save it for another day . . .

I am at a conference in New Orleans. After a late night last night, the conference deosn’t start back up until tonight. So, today has been a productive day of catching up in a nice hotel room without the distractions of meetings and fires needing immediate “putting out.”

I just finished lunch, and was perusing my Google Reader when I came across a very thought provoking article by David Swanson on Christianity Today’s leadership blog, Out of Ur. The article was a good one, generally asking an question I often deal with about the nature of the Gospel and pure representation of it through public testimony. It was a thought provoking piece on how our methodology is affected by our theology (and vice versa).

I get to the end of the piece and was going to make a comment. That’s when I made the mistake of reading some of the other comments. They weren’t bad. Not nearly as offensive as you might see elsewhere. And they weren’t personally affrontive.

Some of them were just really critical. And not really critical of the real issue David was raising.

Two of the comments took specif issue with some of David’s characterizations of the people in the article, taking to time to sort of lecture about this or that . . .

The specifics really aren’t important. What kind of stopped me in my tracks is the realization of how critical we have become as a Church.

We have this wonderful medium, the Internet, that has been harnessed to create virtual environments where incredible knowledge is being communicated. Meaning is being created on the spot! Wonderful articles and sermons about culture, theology, praxis, and so much more occur on blogs and sites across the Internet.

But inevitably, each article ends and the comment section begins.

And here is where so often things get ugly.

In every single comment section on any meaningful post or site, there are “trolls,” people who use that little blank text box to attack and ridicule. They do not really offer any meaningful new information about the issue at hand. Many times, they will pick a tangential point made and use it to hammer home their personal soap-box speech about this or that. Instead of informing a discussion, whether it be with a dissenting viewpoint or a supporting one, they divide with their words.

One of my favorite writers, William Barclay, once wrote, “There is room in God’s Kingdom for different opinions.” I believe in the civil exchange of different ideas.

I welcome it.

What I have grown so weary of (and I mean truly weary, I cannot overstate this) is the culture of criticism that absolutely pervades Christendom. It has become a cottage industry.

I hate it. I really do. And it is almost enough to make someone despair.

Have we lost the spirit of Paul’s words in Ephesians 4:29 and 1 Thessalonians 5:11?

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up.”

There is room for healthy critique . . . but in the name and spirit of Christ.

There is room for discipline and rebuke . . . but only in accordance with the model set by Christ in Matthew 18:15-17 and Paul in Galatians 6:1.

There is absolutely no place for self-righteous criticism (aimed at another person or an entity made-up of people) that does not build up the individual or the Body.

I hate to be so blunt, but the old cliche comes to mind: If you aren’t part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Certainly it is rarely this cut and dry, but the sentiment seems appropriate for this issue.

How would your interactions with the Church, with other specific believers, change if you measured everything you say by whether or not you were building the Church up, or tearing her down? Whether or not you were encouraging someone to think abotu a different view, or attacking what you perceive to be their shortcomings.

We have been tasked by Scripture to build each other up through our words.

I wish this were a truth we, the Church, felt compelled to embrace . . .

We hear about them all the time when reading an AP report on whatever war they happen to be reportin

We hear about them all the time when reading an AP report on whatever war they happen to be reporting on. International Laws of War. These laws are well intentioned, and designed to prevent civilian casualties. As a result of these laws and global economic integration, conflicts between nation-states are becoming almost non-existent. One would argue that this is good, maybe it is, but it has a severe side effect.

People still hate each other, people are still greedy, people still (and always will) have a desire to kill their fellow man. These people have been deprived of “legal” means to do so, or rather, they have been deprived of using the nation-state to wage war, therefore we have tribes, criminal organizations, terrorist groups, militias and other such groups fighting to achieve their goals. These people don’t care about borders, and are playing a huge part in the downfall of the nation-state as we know it. Meanwhile, the nation-states are pushing to become more and more integrated with each other, economically, socially, politically and about any other way you can imagine. So in other words, they’re erasing their own borders, and handing over more and more control to the UN and the general global community.

As a result of both of these things, the nation-state is falling apart. People’s loyalties are no longer to their government, but rather to what have been called “primary loyalties”. These are things like religion, local community, family, tribes, gangs and other such things. By the way, this is how it’s been for most of history. At the end of the thirty years’ war however (treaty of Westphalia, 1648), came the rise of the nation-state. Since then, the state has been who has cared for it’s people, protected them, advanced their interests and gave them identity. People no longer trust their states. And because of modern technology (internet, cell phones, PCs etc.) they don’t have to.

We have interred an interesting age, one where the old, nation-state centered ideologies are falling away to be replaced by these primary loyalties. The US has been largely shielded so far from this fragmentation, but it’s not probable that will last much longer. We are seeing increasing division in the US, on the surface this appears to be a confrontation of ideologies (left-wing vs. right-wing), but I would propose that there are deeper things at work here then simply politics. I would say that the bone of contention has nothing really to do with politics, but people’s worldview, embodied in the primary loyalties I just mentioned. America has, over the years become increasingly diverse. You will be told that this diversity is a strength: it’s not. When push comes to shove, people are going to stand, not with their government or nation-state, but their religion, family, tribe, gang or ethnic group. Diversity drives fragmentation.

This decline of the nation-state will be the story of the 21st century. This is the direction the world is going in, those who recognize it will be ahead of the game, those who don’t will be like the people of Rome who, as their empire was falling appart and being overun with barbarians, said that Rome was invincible, and could never fall.

Watching different news channels on TV in the last few days made me wonder whether all news anchors

Watching different news channels on TV in the last few days made me wonder whether all news anchors are products of the same factory. Although some seem to be more opinionated than others. Same panelists hopping from one channel to the other, same representatives from the concerned political parties repeating the same opinion over and over again. I switched to good old Doordarshan in order to enjoy the channel with a difference. And different it certainly is. I completely understood what my non- Hindi speaking friends mean when they complain about highly sanskritised Hindi or highly arabicized Urdu news broadcast by Doordarshan.

I am all for fusion of languages and when a South Indian or anybody from a non-Hindi speaking area adulterates Hindi or Urdu it is sort of endearing and I have no issues if people don’t understand basic Hindi or Urdu words. Not everybody thinks like me although. I read a very interesting story recently- Josh Malihabadi once asked someone, aaj kaun si tareekh hai? He replied, aaj unnees (19) tareekh hai. Hearing this Josh got angry and said it should be unneeswin (19th) tareekh rather than unnees tareekh. The fact is that it is our right to speak whatever we want to speak and call that language whatever we want to. In a country where it is said the the dialect changes after every 20 kms it is unfair to expect the aam admi to speak any language correctly. My Hindi teacher in class 9 was one of those puritan types who would not tolerate mixing of even Hindi and Urdu. Once I was at the receiving end when I used the word shaadi instead of vivah in my essays. I tried to explain that Munshi Premchand who was regularly a part of our Hindi curriculum for so many years wrote in Urdu and sprinkling a few words of Urdu in Hindi shouldn’t bother anybody.

Actually it is not Hindi but Hindustani which is the national language of India. Hindi is as much our national language as hockey is our national sport. I love both Hindi and Hockey but one has to accept the reality. We can give some credit of amalgamation of Hindi and Urdu to Bollywood films. Hindustani is the hybrid spoken language spoken in most parts of Northern India and contains words from Sanskrit and Persian. The sentence structure of Hindi and Urdu are the same and the only difference is vocabulary. My father always used the word khabarain instead of news or samachar as is commonly used in Hindi. These days nobody uses the word khabarain except for the news reader of the Urdu bulletin on DD news. Hashiya is another word which seems to have disappeared from people’s vocabulary. If you consider wajah a Hindi word, bina-wajah is Hindi and bila-wajah is Urdu. There are many such words, a minor tinkering here and there could change them from Hindi to Urdu and vice versa. In fact this is true about most Indian languages. I guess this is because all of them originated from Sanskrit.

Hindi films have played a major role in promoting Hindustani. The dialogues and the songs are an amalgamation of Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Marathi and if the characters are Malayali or Tamil even words from these languages are used. Although I am not sure if the words are always from regional languages, sometimes I think imaginary words are inserted just to rhyme with the song. Recently in a talk show on a famous news channel a Shiv Sainik when asked about his views on ‘Marathi only’ in Mumbai said that Hindi was a step mother while Marathi was his real mother. I felt like advising him, at least address Hindi as Masi (sagi masi hoon koi sauteli maa nahin style from Sholay). Somebody needs to ask people forcing their language on others, what do they suggest to the central government employees posted in Mumbai. They can’t learn the language of every state they visit because they are transferred every 3 years. All one can be sure of is this language divide is here to stay at least for a few years. The positive side is that the religious divide has been put on a back burner for the moment. The divisive forces can focus on one thing at a time.

Notice the legs pulled back and heels down, back straight, arms bent slightly and hands soft yet still strong.

The Equitation division offers classes for riders who have not reached their 18th birthday and are amatuers. All classes are judged on the rider’s style and ability to control the horse; the horse is not judged or rated, although I feel the judges are definitely drawn to riders with nicer horses and the horse also completes the vision of perfect equitation and makes the over all conformation better and more enjoyable to watch.

Certain fundamentals of equitation are rigidly observed in judging. Riders are required to post (rise from the saddle) as the horse’s leg next to the fence moves forward; this is called riding on the correct “diagnol”. You also have to do this by feeling the horse underneath you instead of simply looking down. Riders must also canter the horse on the correct “lead”. Sometimes they are asked to work individually, and there are several tests a judge may choose. Some of the most frequently used: pick up reins; dismount and mount; figure eight at a trot and/or canter, use correct diagnols and canter leads; ride without stirrups; and change horses and ride. Sometimes you can tell who the better rider is by simply switching horses, but many of these tests have been banned or are simlpy not used anymore while tests stick to challenging patterns on their own horse such as no stirrups, figure eights at multiple gaits, and diagnols and canter leads. Questions regarding anatomy, tack(saddle/bridle) and equitatoin may also be asked. There are three types of equitation – Saddle Seat, Hunter Seat, and Stock Saddle Seat, but only Saddle Seat classes are offered at American Saddlebred Horse Shows.

Even common people know something about DNA, however vague it may be.
But the essence of life is contained in the liquid which fills the space inside the walls (membranes, in case of animals) of the cell. All researhers are working on DNA. This is unfortunate. Even now we know very little about the working of the individual cell.
In my view, cytoplasm holds the key to understanding life. DNA is a chemical substance. It has no life. It cannot multiply, unless it enters the cytoplasmic medium. Metabolic activity is controlled by the cytoplasm, including division of the cell. At one stage prior to division, the nucleus containing the chromosomes, which are made of “bricks ” or links called DNA, DISAPPEARS GIVING FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT to the individual chromosome threads, which move in opposite directions, allowing a partition wall to develop. This wall divides the cell into two.
This is most important. IF WE KNOW HOW CYTOPLASM IS REGULATING THE DIVISION OF CELLS, we can understand how cancerous condition develops.

Quite the disheartening performance by the Sharks in their 3-2 shootout loss against the Dallas Star

Quite the disheartening performance by the Sharks in their 3-2 shootout loss against the Dallas Stars. The Sharks looked to be on the road to victory until they broke out their trademark lazy third period performance. I’m sensing a trend, and coach Todd McClellan better address it quick.

Dany Heatley and Ryane Clowe were the goal scorers tonight. Heatley scored on a behind-the-net feed from Joe Pavelski, while Clowe scored on a wrister from the point. That’s about all the offense there is to report.

The game was all about the goalies. Dallas goalie Marty Turco is probably the luckiest man on earth. He had no right making some of the saves he did. It’s so frustrating to see a goalie beat so many times, yet fling his arms or stick out and make a save. I don’t think that’s skill at all. I can only imagine what it felt like to the Sharks players.

Ryane Clowe screens Marty Turco (From SJSHARKS.com)

Sharks goalie Evgeni Nabokov matched Turco’s saves to keep the game tight. One of the Stars’ goals was a wacky deflection that Nabby had zero chance in getting. Unfortunately, that goal came back to haunt the Sharks.

Enough about the Stars’ luck, though, this third-period collapse trend is scary. I think it was a couple years back in one of Ron Wilson’s last years, if not his last year as Sharks coach, where they could never hold onto leads well. They also got complacent and lazy, and it’s coming up again. I realize I’m not a professional hockey player, but come on. Don’t you want to beat every team 10-0 every night? Why do you want to take shifts off and not try? Please tell me.

This is a rivalry game. Pummel your opponent.

Pacific Division games are boring, I must admit. I don’t know if every fan feels this way about their teams’ division games, but they put me to sleep. Playing Los Angeles, Phoenix and Dallas is so lackluster. Anaheim is better, but I don’t feel any intensity. Maybe some of the Sharks feel that, I don’t know.

Why did Ryan Vesce only play five minutes in this game? He looks healthy and he was on that point streak before he got injured. Give him more ice time. He deserves it, and he’s earned it.

Other Notes

Hit-O-Meter: SJ 33 DAL 26; Douglas Murray had six hits. Jed Ortmeyer had five.

The Sharks earn another point by getting into a shootout to extend their point-streak to 10 games.

All five games the Sharks have played past regulation have gone to shootouts. They’re 2-3 in those games.

Next game is Saturday at St. Louis.
