Are you ready b-boy?

It increasingly feels to me that the older you get, the less wonderment the world around you seems to hold. That child-like carefree awe felt towards even the simplest of things seems to slowly seep away, until everything just feels familiar and ordinary. Adventure gives way to experience.

On different levels it’s something we want to fight. Going out with my friends for a night on the town these days, I know that no amount of pints of Fosters or shots of aftershock will recreate the excitement we felt at 17 years old, trying such stuff out for the first time. At University, my friends and I would regularly frequent a house club in Newcastle called Shindig which has left us with memories that will stay with us a lifetime; but after a few years of going, that initial feeling of giddy exhilaration could never be recaptured, no matter how many times we tried to kid ourselves that we could make our next visit “just like the old days.”

Looking across the valley of the Big Chill site

And so it was at this year’s Big Chill Festival where it became apparent the wonderment had disappeared. This was the fourth successive year that me and at least two others had attended the annual event in Eastnor and, while it proved to be a great weekend that was undoubtedly one of the highlights of my year, it was just that, a great weekend. Well worth doing, little doubt it will be replicated next year. But whereas attending music festivals in my late teens would provide a buzz that would remain with me weeks after, this year the sun tan has outlasted it.

I saw some great music, I had a great laugh with my friends, I absolutely adored the chance to lie back in blazing hot sunshine with a can of cider in my hand and allow weeks of stress to fizzle away, but still something was missing which I don’t think can be reclaimed.

And that was the wonderment of the Big Chill. It was the excitement of wandering around a huge site where you’re not quite sure what’s around the corner, the surprise of seeing a groups of people dressed up as the ginger bread men or the amazement at Eastnor’s stunning scenery and dramatic shift at night-time which makes you feel like you’re at two different festivals. This year I guess I knew more than ever what would be round the next corner, that some people would pick the same day to wear daft outfits and that, when it got to the evening, seemingly hundreds of candle powered balloons would be released in the sky. All of this, and more, remains brilliant and utterly appreciated; but if I haven’t yet got to the point where I can call myself a Big Chill veteran, I’m equally no longer a Big Chill child.

As disappointing as this felt, I still returned from this year’s Big Chill largely delighted by the weekend. As it was the festival’s 15th birthday, an effort was made to improve the strength of the line up which was reflected in increased ticket prices. Basement Jaxx, Orbital and David Byrne took the headline slots and, while there’s been little wrong with previous choices once they got on stage and proved their worth, such moves were aimed at addressing regular criticisms over this apparent weakness in Big Chill line ups.

As we stood through three quarters of Basement Jaxx’s Friday headline slot, it was tempting to question the value of doing so. Basement Jaxx have been around for almost a decade, but their wonderment disappeared long after their first album crossed over to the mainstream and the subsequent series of commercially-minded and largely weak hits. I wouldn’t have entertained the idea of wasting an hour and a half of my life watching them were it not for one of our party insisting they put on a good live show. It’s true that, with a series of dancers and guest vocalists appearing and reappearing on stage to sing different songs, it was visually interesting, but it wasn’t enough to disguise the frankly averageness of their back catalogue and some appalling new songs. Somehow, despite having no expectation when they came on the stage, I left disappointed.

At least Orbital, on the Saturday night, put on a show worthy of a headline act. Late last year the duo had announced they were reforming to play at the Big Chill, though their eventual Eastor moment was somewhat dampened by the fact they’d already played a series of comeback shows inbetween. Nevertheless they came on stage 10 minutes before they were due, as though they couldn’t wait to get started. Surprisingly playing their better known songs such as ‘Belfast’ and ‘Chime’ early on, it paved the way for a second half set full of their more dancier stuff that had the field rocking. The brilliant ‘Halcyon’, with its Belinda Carlisle and Bon Jovi snippets, burst into full flow and the highlight of the weekend was upon us.

Not that a festival like Big Chill is all about the headline acts though. Over the four days we were fortunate to witness a brilliantly diverse range of laid back and up tempo music, starting on the opening night with British Sea Power’s re-scoring of the soundtrack to the film ‘Man of Aran’. I’d listened to this album a few times before the festival, and had felt disappointed. Yet one last attempt before we set off down South saw me suddenly ‘get it’ and, seeing BSP perform the music live with the film footage behind put everything firmly into place. BSP capped the night off by ending with ‘The Great Skua’ from their fantastic ‘Do you like rock music?’ album.

The crowd gets down to Friendly Fires

Friday’s highlights included an energetic set from indie dance outfit Friendly Fires, who were/are on the brink of crossing over into mainstream. Fink also impressed with some chilled guitar strumming which included tracks from the enjoyable recent album, ‘Sort of Revolution’. Noah and the Whale were distinctly average, but not in the manner I had expected. In my ignorance I assumed they were something of a novelty, quirky act, but instead they played new songs that suggested a darker, rockier side which nevertheless made little impact. In contrast Caliexco played more soft rock, but equally failed to enthrall.

On the Saturday we enjoyed the more laid back sounds of Hafdis Huld and Emmy the Great. Late at night Lamb and Spiritulized were both mesmerising and epic; particularly the latter from whom each song seemingly lasted 10 minutes but were all the better for the slow introduction and end that retained interest. A highlight on Sunday was rising folk star Andrew Bird, who alternated between playing guitar and the violin; a worthy focus of attention on a lazy day which had begun with stand up comedian Russell Howard.

Who else should be at work right now?

The Big Chill has a harder, more dancier side and it was from the DJs were some of the highlights emanated. On Saturday we enjoyed a typically laid back hip hop set from DJ Format, followed by a DJ named Parker who chose some brilliant tunes but put in some truly appalling mixes when bridging them together. The Nextmen kept the hip hop feel going and, with Krafty Kuts and A-Skillz to come after, it was hard to pull ourselves away for Lamb, Spiritulized and Orbital. Moving to the main stage did lead to an uplifting set from Justin Robertson which had the pre-Orbital crowd rocking.

And it was in the dance music which provided the greatest pleasure. Musically Orbital might have stolen it, but as feeling good goes it was hard to beat dancing like an idiot to Coyote in the Rizla Arena on Friday afternoon, especially when he launched into Underworld’s ‘Bigmouth’.

It felt so good, because this was the ultimate in escapism.

If I wasn’t here dancing in the sunshine of the Big Chill, I’d have been typically sat inside an office working hard with tight deadlines to meet. This truly was leaving everything behind and just enjoying myself in a way not much more mature than when I was child having fun on a playground.

As long as I don’t have to start wearing a tie or properly clean myself in the morning, festivals like The Big Chill will continue to provide such joy, delight and escapism. Wonderment may be forever lost from that list, but a nice tan isn’t a bad substitute.

The Big Chill is a deceptive name. After 3 days of going to bed close to 4 and being woken up by nauseating heat around 8 I am definitely more tired and less chilled than I was prior to my Big Chill experience. However, premature old age aside, it was a great weekend. The festival played host to a succession of talent both old and new allowing for nostalgia and education in equal part.

A lot of DJs played ‘festival sets’ in which they played out a lot of tunes they usually wouldn’t go anywhere near. This doesn’t really fly with me but I guess festivals are about fun and most other people seemed to love hearing Bonkers mixed into Billie Jean mixed into Where’s My Money. Some people, such as A-Skillz and The Nextmen, manage to walk the tight rope of integrity and play well known tunes without sounding like an out of date Oceana DJ but some others should definitely stick to what they know.

Bitch Over. Friday saw a line up which could easily have tied me to one stage for about 9 hours. We had Bullion and Paul White followed by Brackles and Ramadanman followed by Floating Points followed by MJ Cole followed by Tomb Crew followed By Toddla T. Pipedown favourites pretty much every single one of them, highlights came especially from Brackles and Floating Points who brought exquisite funky and two step respectively. It was also a pleasure to see garage legend MJ Cole, although after a brilliant hour succumbed to the temptation of a festival set but we’ll focus on the good bits.

Next day on the same stage was DJ Format, A-Skillz and Krafty Kuts and The Nextmen amongst others. Different vibe but still EPIC. All these guys know what they do and they do it very very well. A-Skillz can put a hip hop beat with anything and in doing so put a smile on my face. Amazingly Craig Charles of robot wars fame was also DJing! Even more amazing was that he was actually really good, did not see that one coming!

When we eventually got away from this stage there was some other really good stuff going down. Kode 9 and the Spaceape owned the club tent and clearly wanted more than one hour as did the crowd. Ludovico Einaudi and his White Tree Project were fantastic on the main stage. He’s a pianist I admire a lot and I think this outfit is the best bridge between classical and electronic music i’ve heard. Lamb played live for the first time in a several years. Their ‘What Sound EP’ is one of my favourite records and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it transfered from stereo to stage. Quantic is an artist I have a lot of time for and his live show was impressive. I must confess I thought Quantic was a man who sat in his bedroom putting funk samples together, oh how wrong I was. He led what you would have to call a jazz band which had guest vocalists and instrumentalists from all corners of the globe, unfortunately I only saw about half an hour of it.

The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble provided the best non-electronic dance music I’ve ever heard. Straight out of Chicago these 8 brothers rocked the main stage. Obviously Norman Jay was a highlight. He brought the sunshine and killed the main stage with a set of funk, soul, dnb, house and more. I’m gunna take this opportunity to slew cntrst for lying on the floor asleep for an hour and a half of this whilst Norman Jay was bringing the noise. You should drink less you drunk.

We spent more time in the ‘Words In Motion’ tent than I would have anticipated. Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze, who I’m told was the first female dub poet, had more soul than a shoe shop and a girl called Kate Tempest performed poetry that had people walking past stopping en masse.

As far as the headliners went, things were definitely on a nostalgic tip. None of them were really artists I’m following at the moment. It felt necessary to pay tribute to Orbital, Hexstatic were as fun as ever and Basement Jaxx…well. I did not expect Basement Jaxx to play Pon De Floor and Cockney Thug! They were definitely my favourite headliners of the weekend, probably because they didn’t do what I expected them to at all. That being said, Hexstatic did some interesting things with Shlomo, Capoeira and a Samba band which worked very well.

Myself and cntrst and Dubb had a long conversation about what tune of the weekend was. I was very surprised not to hear any Calvin Harris all weekend and was disappointed no-one played a remix of Animal by Miike Snow which I had marked down as a festival anthem. Tunes that constantly killed it however (other than Billie Jean which we weren’t feeling) were Party Hard by Donaeo and Pon De Floor by Major Lazer. I honestly could not say which of these tunes was bigger. We’d decided to give Norman Jay the casting vote, if he played either it would be cemented as tune of the festival. Unfortunately the Big Chill god lives in a slightly different musical stratosphere from Pipedown so we will have to call it a draw.

At risk of this turning into an advert I highly recommend the Big Chill. Its a festival with one of the best vibes I’ve ever seen and a range of artists to celebrate old masters and welcome in new talent. In the mean time you can catch some of the Big Chill vibe at the Big Chill House or Big Chill Bar.

Not only is it a great concept for a video–shot in one take, with the audio live from the same take you’re watching—but it’s also got a wide variety of good musicianship, and some decent conscious rapping from the infectiously optimistic Nyle, who spearheaded the project.

Elsewhere online gives some behind the scenes information (and footage) that’s worth reading through while you replay the video (you know you want to). Apparently they ran through it almost 40 times on the day of shooting. I’m still impressed he worked up that much official support for a project based off a Lil Wayne song….

As the Summer rolls in, thoughts fall on party plans before the scary thought of graduating from Uni

As the Summer rolls in, thoughts fall on party plans before the scary thought of graduating from University. With so many festivals to choose from nowadays, this is my attempt at making sense of it all. Two festivals have really stood out for me, Sonar festival in Barcelona and the very different Lounge on the Farm in Canterbury.

Sonar is marketed as Barcelona’s international festival of advanced music and multimedia art, making it much more than just a rave in sunny spain, (not that there’s anything wrong with that). Its positioned right in Barcelona and has world class dance and electronic music playing all day and all night, which will have you crawling back to your hostel room at 7 in the morning. You can trust Sonar to pull in some of the best names in music with appearances by Orbital, Late of the Pier, SebastiaN and a huge Ed Banger set already confirmed. Only problem is the euro/pound thing, meaning it will be pretty expensive.

http://2009.sonar.es/en/noticies.php?id=7

Lounge on the Farm presents a very different festival experience, limited to around 5000 places, and giving you an eclectic mix of music. Being in Canterbury for the past three years I have always over looked the festival, but upon hearing three of there confirmed lineup, Mr Scruff, DJ Format and the tremendous, wonderful Wild Beasts, I now feel I need to be there. Less than a week before my graduation, I can’t wait to lounge around in Kentish sun, all for a much less dearer cost than the prospect of Sonar.

http://www.loungeonthefarm.co.uk/

All this reminds me that you must check out this Wild Beasts band, their album Limbo, Panto is another big hit of last summer. Their music stands as gospel to the British twenty something, fumbling into adulthood with lyrics like ‘brave bulging bouyant clairvoyants’ and ‘warwhoopfully have wept’.

Abdominal is a artist based outta T.O that has been making dope music with his U.K connect DJ Format. His first album was Escape From The Pigeon Hole which spent a fair amount of time in the car stereo and he recently put out a new project called PedalWorkout Remix EP which features a few Remixes of his track “Pedal Pusher” as well as a Live version and a couple other tracks. The EP is available on Itunes and you can preview a few of the Remixes on his Myspace as well

For a holiday devoted to eating way too much, I was going to play this hot little DJ Format and Abdominal track that is an ode to fast food. For some reason, though, I still haven’t figured out how to upload an mp3 from my computer and I couldn’t find a video for it online. I did, however, find this other pretty great Format and Abdominal track instead. Happy Thanksgiving and enjoy…

Fania has always been considered the Mecca of Latin music, mixing traditional Latin styles and recording some of the most memorable moments in salsa, boogaloo and Afro-Cuban jazz. Here we find a stacked deck of great tracks, providing a snapshot of Fania’s glorious catalogue including original songs from Tito Puente, Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Ruben Blades, La Lupe, Ray Baretto and more. The second disc ventures into remix territory with contributions from Bugz In the Attic, DJ Format, Nicola Conte, Louie Vega and Aaron Jerome. While some of the reworks are great, the brunt of the payoff here is in the original tracks themselves, which is why this came about in the first place, right? So, I thought I would not only give you a taste of this great record, but also give you a glimpse of what Fania was all about with a look at Leon Gast’s 1972 documentary Fania All Stars: Our Latin Thing, which you can watch in 9 parts on youtube. Enjoy.

So far the most tear-jerking, earth-shattering, jelly-oozing comment I’ve ever had my name attached to is right here:

http://twitter.com/nerveending/statuses/776219191

I didn’t know whether to laugh, be pissed, piss off a stranger or buy myself a drink. So I bought myself a drink, and while laughing pissed on a pissed-off stranger.

I’ll try and gather the energy to honor some of the brave people who have spent some time with GT and blogged stuff about it. SO that’ll be probably up within the next 10 years.

Oh, and the top ten list? Will those pesky drawings ever get it made and post it online? I don’t know. Ok, yes I DO know. So here they are. But I went over some of Cain’s browser history records and apart from all the www.qmov.com bookmarks I found some of these videos. I’m going to try and figure out why he likes these. It’s hard enough that he’s imaginary, he also doesn’t have eyes. Anyway here we go. If you’re having girl problems I feel bad for you son, but if you wanna see some videos just scroll on down.

10. Drip (vocals by Beng Calma) Live at Saguijo: Swanker

The Cain Award For A-Jaw-Dropping-And-Spit-Drooling-Worthy Performance At The Same Time

It must be her voice. It must be the looks on their seemingly composed yet totally relaxed stage-savvy presence. Or it must be this vague memory I have of screaming (YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!) at Bheng’s face at a Christmas party last year. I can’t even remember if we were properly introduced to each other. I just think Cain likes it for the electrosynth bipidi-bipidi-bipidiing throughout the song, constantly expanding like a sonic rubber band.

9. TUNNG – Bullets

The Cain Award For A Holy Moment Involving Home Appliances In Space

Here’s a video that makes you feel like your God’s stoner best friend who just visited for the summer and he’s showing you the sights around the universe for 3 days and then takes you to his favorite bar at the end of the galaxy where his friends Thistlejack, Whenthewhenwordwantswarts, Carrier1 and Carrier 2 hang out and talk of the past, present, future in 14 languages all at the same time. Cain likes this sort of stuff because he says if he couldn’t be a god, he’d just be as happy as being God’s best buddy, being there for him all the time, dispensing advice while raiding his Fridge for Cheetos.

8. DJ Format – We know something you don’t know vs. Grandaddy – Nature Anthem

The Cain Award For That Nice Fuzzy Feeling

It would be totally illegal to choose which one is better.

7. HD Halo 3 Vid Doc: Cinema Paradiso

The Cain Award For Total Gaming Awesomeness

In the days of yore, it was Battle City. Then Contra. Operation Wolf. The Mario Series. Street Fighter. Etc. Fast forward to the now and it seems that Atari was electrocuted with a Prozac-addicted God of Time-Wasters and here we are with Halo 3. In the future, human babies will have larger left hands and longer fingers for keyboard clicking and right hands with nimbler pointer fingers with an express line to the brain.

6. Video explains the world’s most important 6-sec drum loop

The Cain Award For Being Truly Thorough During The A.D.H.D. Age

Can you be anymore thorough about something no one ever really thinks about but almost everyone who has bit his lower lip to a beat has already been living with for the 50 years? When a video about a peanut with a depression streak complete with testimonials relating the topic to grunge and motown music is released, Cain and I will be there to applaud it.

The Cain Award For Profundity In Small Doses

This is one of those things where you think you just wasted your time but actually, the meaning of life was just explained to you. And if you didn’t get it the first time, you, your sons and their dogs’ fleas will never get it. Forever.

4. Kent “Toast” French, The World’s Fastest Clapper

The Cain Award For Hands That Defy Normality

However, this is one of those things that you think you’re going to see something really mind-blowing but actually it really is just a guy who claps really fast. Cain loves showing this to girls right before he gropes them and screams “Talladega Nights blows, but Old School flies!” in their faces. It’s amazing.

The Cain Award For Community Fellowship For Positivity And Rice Cakes

Is it possible for a video to contain all the love, sugar-free lattes, rabbits, hellos, hugs, handshakes, brotherhood, hope and kindness in the world and still come out excellent? Yes.

2. Billy Crystal – Home Videos

The Cain Award For 80’s Comedians Who Done Good

One of those things where you say to yourself, “You know, I wish I could’ve thought this up myself.” No? Ok.

1. Seasick Steve LIVE ON JOOLS HOLLAND

The Cain Award For Iron Testicles And Fluid Style Combo

Here’s a guy who gives the world a finger and takes a 3 string guitar and names it The Transwonder, uses a real box for percussion and calls it The Mississippi Drum Machine then goes deep into his life and releases his blues hounds on the world with a name like Seasick Steve. This is Cain if he had a beard, wore plaids and never forgave you for not tattooing his name on your booty. This is “Be Yourself” immortalized.

There. Would he have arranged these videos in this order? I don’t know. I bet some of you guys don’t agree with the list even. That’s why he’s Cain and I don’t want to be Abel.

And now for something completely different.

Gestern also Stubnitz.

I think that smiling in public is against the law!
Damn, I wish I wasn’t such a whimp!
