Kieran Hebden, oder kurz Kieran, weil sich kein schwein den vollen namen merken kann, ist FOUR TET. eine person, die schon seit zig jahren (10 jahre lang!) unser teilweise melancholie gepeinigtes gemüt mit geiler glasklarer sample attitüde füttert. die neue single, “Love Cry”, ist raus und ich finde sie klingt etwas nach den alten Kruder& Dorfmeister sachen der 90er jahre, was nicht schlecht ist.

It’s no secret that I crush on 70s and 80s-era synth lines with sexuality laden hooks. Chromeo has been, and still consistently brings them both to the table. On “Night by Night,” Dave 1 goes above and beyond on his face melting bridge, leaving P-Thugg to mop up your tears with his piano roll. If you feel Chromeo you’ll be in love within the first few seconds.

The Montreal duo Chromeo continues in hot pursuit of the funk on the latest installment of DJ-KiCKS, !K7’s acclaimed DJ mix series that has resulted in classic, definitive sets from artists like Kruder & Dorfmeister, Playgroup, Tiga, Erlend Oye and Hot Chip, to name but a few. (It’s first DJ-KiCKS, in fact, since Booka Shade’s 2007 contribution).
True to the series’ standard, Chromeo’s selection takes in sounds you’d be hard-pressed to hear almost anywhere else: early ’80s disco and R&B that sound little like the Italo and space disco currently enjoying a rise in hipster cred. Bursting with robo-funk basslines and plastic handclaps, swollen with strings and keyboards and vocals, it celebrates an oft-derided side of ’80s pop. Amidst gems from the likes of Leo Sayer, France Joli and even The Alan Parsons Project, the mix also features new tracks from current artists like Lifelike and Chateau Marmont-not to mention Chromeo’s own cover of the Eagles’ “I Can’t Tell You Why.”

‘I Can’t Tell You Why’ by Chromeo is an electronic slowy with vocorder vocals, rising bleeps and a moody beat. It’s an Eagles cover apparently – Chef’s too young to know – and leads Chromeo’s IK7 Tapes / DJ-Kicks outing that I’m looking forward to getting my hands on. Chef’s Kiss!

sorry i’ve been so quiet this week – i’ve a new job and any free time has been devoted to something which for now must be kept under wraps. all i can say is that it’s a bit special, and i’m pretty excited about it. anyway yesterday i picked up two (appropriately priced) cds which i think you should too: boys noize’s sophomore effort power, and chromeo’s contribution to the dj-kicks series. mmm. both are easing the pain of realising it’s october, already. crikey.

Es uno de los valores del deep house alemán gracias a sus aportaciones en sellos como Sonar Kollektiv y en su exitoso subsello Innervisions. Lleva ya un tiempo en las listas de productores regeneradores del house europeo que tiene al eje Berlín-Munich su centro de operaciones. Ha editado en sellos como Moodmusic, Diamonds & Pearls Music y últimamente ha triunfado mucho con su Where we at a medias con Dixon y Âme en el que se incuye un sampler vocal del gran Derrick Carter. El futuro del house de Chicago pasa por un productor con apellido alemán.

Lo cierto es que la música de DJ Cam siempre se ha parecido a lo que anunciaba su primer y no sabemos si extinto primer sello: Street jazz. Y es que, este músico con alma de jazzman, busca la calle a través de un hip hop instrumental inflado de evocadores paisajes taxidriverianos. Su material bebe mucho de DJ Premier de Gang Starr, una leyenda de la música negra a quien dedica el tema “Premier”. Paralelamente, en la muy charadiana “Espionage”, el de Paris invita al sedoso Guru para que se invente unas rimas. Todo esto hace que hoy DJ Cam pueda gustar a parte de aquél público que antes le negaba el pan, por no pertenecer a la cultura del barrio. Con los años, su sonido ha dejado de ser “sofisticado” o electrónico. Ahora, su jazzeo y sus scratchs evocan a Eric B and Rakim o a Artifacts. Incluso reincide en las parquedades del primer DJ Krush. Mención especial para el mano a mano con el detroitiano J Dilla y su funk vaporoso y espacial. Citas todas ellas conocidas, pero que refrescan la memoria y atraen a un nuevo público.

so i was supposed to have an internet-free weekend, but my kind host has left me in his university’s computer room while he does some photocopying, or something. this afternoon i trawled around london looking for phonica – printing a map might have helped – until i was helped my a kindly policeman on piccadilly circus who just happened to have a map of the capital in his pocket. sweet. so i picked up some random oddities for super cheap in the uber-cool soho record store (which just received those crazy ark 1 tees), and i also grabbed the juan maclean’s one day vinnil (with added marc romboy/emperor machine/surkin) in hmv of all places.

meanwhile, whoever isn’t at airbound is certainly keeping the bodytonic site ticking over. they’ve just announced the tracklist for chromeo’s forthcoming dj-kicks mix. i’m stumped – the only track i know is the eagles cover they’ve just released. wow. i’m excited. nice to see young shazam getting a look-in.

Chromeo, Chromeo wherefore art thou Chromeo?… Well honestly, it seems that Montreal’s multi-ethnic loverboys Dave One and Pee Thugg have been everywhere. They’ve already released two acclaimed albums: 2004’s She’s In Control and 2007’s Fancy Footwork. They’ve hit the dance floors and attacked the charts with classics such as “Needy Girl”, “Bonafied Lovin”, “You’re So Gangsta” and “Momma’s Boy”. They’ve provided exclusive remixes for the likes of Cut Copy, Feist and Vampire Weekend. But now, after spending the last couple of years jet setting and globe-trotting, there’s only one place you can find them: on the new upcoming DJ-KiCKS.

I can´t wait! It promises to be in the vain of the awesome 2005 tape Un Joli Mix Pour Toi with 80s disco, R&B and boogie.

The duos exclusive track for the mix is a cover of The Eagles I Can´t Tell You Why. Good stuff.

It’s been two years since the last DJ-Kicks compilation. Chromeo has been selected to revive the storied mix series, which has previously been helmed by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Hot Chip, and Carl Craig, among others.
