Not too much needs to be said about Pete Rock – his production has consistently featured in some of the best rap in (insert year) for nigh on 20 years now and while the Soul Brother #1 won’t ever make an album as damn good as Mecca & the Soul Brother again, his stella work on Rakewon’s OBFCLN2 proves he’s still got a heck of hand to play in the 10s. Now that’s said, here’s maybe my fave PR joints from the 00s; tracks from Screwball, Mount Vernon’s finest reunited and a couple from the 2001 PeteStrumentals album.  Opening is two tracks that feature the UN, the latter of which, Nothin Lesser, is of my all-time favourite Pete Rock tunes. First up however is Cake, where the afforementioned and sorely underrated UN tear up Pete’s dope beat and an Isaac Hayes loop:

The cover artwork is by the NY graffiti artist Futura 2000 whose work should be well recognized by any Mo Wax/UNKLE fans.

The Bristol sound, also known as trip-hop, was born from the British hip-hop and house scenes of the mid-1990s. Artists like Massive Attack, DJ Shadow and Portishead took the hybrid genre and turned it into a hip-hop-influenced electronica that harnessed a fanbase that reached between the Atlantic. Was good to have run the restlessness out of the system. That meant it wasn’t about speed anymore.

Somehow, the slow plodding’s really blissful with DJ Krush piping into the ears in the dead of night.

Then a cool down with Moby.

I suspect DJ Krush worked because he’s dead slow.

He somehow encourages you to just go with the flow, because running the restlessness out of the system seems less to do with strength than endurance. And DJ Krush is good not because he makes a lot of sound but because he’s good with the silences.

Listening to Monday on a Sunday, she is almost as beautiful as her music.

Je citerais : Elvis Perkins In Dearland (dont j’ai acheté l’album en rentrant à 6h du mat…), DJ Krush, The Orb, Beat Torrent, Digitalism, Scratch perverts, DJ Kentaro, Tambours du Bronx… et pleins d’autres. Aussi d’excellentes animations / oeuvres d’arts numériques et pleins de choses à voir.

Mostly known as an actress, perhaps most notably in the original Ringu movies (remade as The Ring in the U.S.), Miki Nakatani has released quite a bit of music as well.

I know very little about her but it seems to me she has a “pop” sensibility, the manufactured kind, to her music, molded by the producer. I discovered her only because on this album all of the songs are remixes, including the touch of DJ Krush, DJ Cam and Andrea Parker, among others. Those names and production by Ryuichi Sakamoto give it enough of a cred stamp to try.

Much, but not all, of it is sung in Japanese. However, there is a remake of The Carpenters’ “Superstar” remixed by Andrea Parker that is pretty cool and several songs have no singing at all and feature nice grooves.

While not earth shattering, it is still an album that should be rescued from the dustbins. Check it.

Krush’s beats were meant for this kind of music. Hip-hop meets jazz. I didn’t know anything about Toshinori Kondo before this album but his trumpet playing is amazing.

Highly recommended for fans of Krush and beats in general and fans of jazz, especially of the trumpet variety.

Incredible album.
