From Baile Funk back to Black Rio and beyond, Brazilian music has always proven adept at putting a unique spin on whatever musical trends and influences happen to be floating around. And as far as I can see, this trend shows no sign of letting up any time soon.

Want the proof? The Future Sound of Brasil is a new compilation from the always-excellent bbe records, showcasing some of the country’s most cutting-edge DJs and producers as they put their own twist on a variety of electronic music styles.

The album spans house, electro, drum’n'bass and techno, with contributors ranging from big names DJs like Marky to young upstarts Copacabana Club and The Twelves – who cement their reputation as ‘the Brazilian Daft Punk’ with a polished, robotic remix of Terry Poison’s Comme çi, comme ça.

The standout track, though, comes from São Paulo’s Mixhell, who blend rock guitars, electro bleeps and even Funk Carioca’s tamborzão into a sound they call ‘rock-tronica’. Boom Da is as noisy, dumb and upfront as you could possibly want music to be.

KL Jay e Marky juntos. Isso aconteceu no projeto “Música Sem Fronteiras”.  A apresentação que Kleber faz antes de começar a quebradeira é perfeita, pois ali estão dois artistas que romperam fronteiras.

KL Jay foi o homem responsável por musicar toda a poesia de Mano Brown, ele é a música que existe e sempre irá existir nos Racionais.

Marky foi um dos DJ que fez com que a tradicional musica brasileira ganhasse uma sobrevida. Mas com o passar do tempo a relação entre MPB e música eletrônica foi se pasteurizando e se tornando em mesmice.

Marky foi além e usou a música brasileira para buscar elementos. Um (ou dois) dia antes dessa apresentação o vi em ação na Clash. Ele fez um remix de Michael Jackson (“Rock With You” se não me engano) que foi destruidor.

No set que os dois mostram nesse vídeo circulam mestres como James Brown, Racionais, Elis Regina, Jorge Ben e Tim Maia.

Isso se chama educação musical.

Hmmm. I’ve definitely been quite easy going about my employment. I do apply for jobs everyday but I’ve also sort of been working for my friend and I had a severance package so I wasn’t that desperate. The work for my friend is dwindling now and my severance package has pretty much run out. I have to get my ass in gear. Fortunately I’m still not depressed. I am a person that believes everything happens for a reason. The only reason I’m writing about it today is because my mum suggested maybe coming home… gasp. And I’m actually thinking about it… gasp squared. I wouldn’t give up my flat or anything. I would just be making some money in Madison until I got myself back on my feet. My unemployment money covers my rent so that would be taken care of. I said I’m thinking about it. I’m still not really sold. I dislike Madison immensely. I find it stifling and boring as fuck. I’m just babbling about it cuz my mum brought it up this morning. We’ll see.

I need to buy some new tunes. LOL. I know I don’t have any money but there’s a whole new wave of dnb that I would like to add to my collection so I need to hussle a little more and get some spending money. I’m usually pretty content with my selection. I hadn’t really heard any tracks that I thought I would die if I didn’t own so I was ok with being poor and not being able to afford new stuff. The mixes I have been listening to lately have definitely changed my mind though so I guess we’ll have to add “Operation New Tunes” to my list too.

Blu Mar Ten - Believe Me - BMT 002

“Believe Me” is the second single from the forthcoming Blu Mar Ten all-drum-and-bass album.  This single follows the similar dual format as the last, with two tracks on the very limited edition vinyl 12″ with lovely artwork courtesy of ithinkitsnice, and a third bonus track available only as a download.

DJ support has been provided from some of the biggest names in the drum & bass scene: Marky, London Elektricity, Doc Scott, Teebee, Hype, Spectrasoul, Makoto, Apex, SPY, Craggz, DKay, Seba, Loxy, Ink, Lynx, Instra:mental, John B, ASC, Nerm & Dcode, Randomer and many others.

The title track “Believe Me” kicks off with swirling melodies and some no-nonsense punchy drums which wouldn’t sound out of place in the next Commix single , growing slowly before the bassline kicks in…. Some lovely Steve Reich-style chimes kick in shortly before the vocal from a long-deceased pop star appears, giving the track it’s title and a memorable hook.

The AA Site, “Made Of Air”, has the classic Blu Mar Ten sound, reminiscent of their highly-detailed work on the Everglades EP from a long time ago… The listener is immediately bombarded with tons & tons of sounds & textures from the very start. A dusty piano gives the track a real cinematic edge, and the general tone and atmosphere of the track really highlights the fact that these chaps have spent many years forging their own unique sound.

As per the last single, they decide to make the best track, “Overwhelm” a download-only exclusive. The track draws you from the very beginning with a beautiful keyboard line & crisp electronic drums, before a bassline reminiscent of their excellent “2046″ rumbles it’s way into your subconscious.

A genuinely interesting single that further blurs the distinction between drum & bass & electronic music in it’s purest form. Well worth checking out.

I was going to go into detail about the bad and the goods about this event, but I will settle with the good.

That s right to all of the naysayers and assholes out there…I had a chance to perform with DJ Marky THE DJ Marky…and it was awesome!

The energy that this man has on the 1s and 2s is incredible and I can honestly give kudos to him for the way that I performed.

This is a small run down of my night. Of course…nothing is professional when you are going to club to try and perform. Which is something that I need because dancing for two hours straight and then asking me to get on the microphone is NOT going to work.

So, I talked to DJ Midway who was performing at the time. I knew from the jump that I was not going to get on the microphone…because that is how DJs and Promoters are when it comes to Mcng in Chicago.

I can understand that reasoning, but at the same time give a sista a chance. So, I was waiting and waiting and waiting and when DJ Marky got on the 1s and 2s…I said fuck it…I know I am not performing now.

A newbie which no one has heard of…trying to get on the mic with DJ Marky…yeah right. So, about 15 minutes into DJ Markys set…DJ Midway finds me on the dance floor and tells me that Marky is looking for a MC…really?

This is why I LOVE international DJs. They understand what a GOOD MC can do for the crowd and also for their.  I was so ecstatic, excited, and emotional…to the point that I was fucking nervous.  So…after waiting and waiting to get the mic in my hand it was finally here and it was on.

I did what I did best and the crowd enjoyed it. Being on rhythm with the beat and releasing my flow right when the beat drops…was killa for the crowd.

I love it. I loved it even more when the fans the people in the crowd could look up and hear the music and see a BANGIN female MC putting it down. That is what I want out of this. Not the fame nor the money, but for people to see that there is talent out there. That regardless if I am a woman, black, fat…that I can get down with any male or female that can MC.

That is what I want. I want you to get crunk and feel good and have shivers down your spine when my vocals and the beat drop. I want you to feel motivated and inspired once you have seen and heard one of my sets. I want you to feel loved when I am on the microphone. I want to you to feel the wonderful light energy that I release to you. And that is what I received/gave when I performed with DJ Marky. I did not perform as long as I did at my last gig, but at least in those 30 minutes…I showed everyone that I have what it takes and that there is new female MC on the drum & bass scene GGooDei MC that is.

I’ve been at work since 6:30 a.m.

I know it’s not that old.  I was listening to it this morning.  Trying to get myself out the door.  I love Marky and Bungle together.  They make melodic rowdiness yet not overwhelmingly noisy.  Dope.

I have no idea who this is.  Found the mix on DOA.  It’s nice to listen to mixes that don’t have the same stuff on it.  Good range of tracks.
