mit daniel fx geht es endlich heiter weiter. mit ihm haben wir einen äusserst versierten musikanten an bord, der schon seit längerem im berliner nachtleben agiert und mit seiner partyserie “berliner stadtmusikanten” für die nötige aufmerksamkeit gesorgt hat. was zudem sein munteres, nach vorwärts gerichtetes set beweist, welches den dancefloor agil bezirzt und wohl einige ärsche wackeln lässt.

wobei wir nun schnell beim thema fitness wären. oder beim essen. oder doch beim verteilen des eigenen genetischen materials, beziehungsweise beim erlangen dessen? egal, ich bin äusserst schlecht beim decodieren von solchen signalen. lieber sauge ich mir erstmal daniel’s mix auf mein handliches datenwiedergabe kästchen runter und schwinge mich später auf mein mt-bike. gekocht wird später und verteilt wird gar nichts. ausser vielleicht nutzlose aber gut gemeinte ratschläge… wer will einen?

- wer bist du?
ich bin daniel. manche nennen mich auch fx oder schulze.

- wann und wieso bist du mit elektronischer musik in kontakt gekommen?
das ganze fing ziehmlich früh an. mein bruder brachte mir damals in den neunizger jahren schon immer mixtapes aus diversen clubs mit die ich rauf und runter hörte. seitdem höre ich viel und habe mir dann im jahr 1999 meine ersten 1210er und ein kleines mischpult gekauft.

- im jahr 2000 bist du nach berlin gezogen und hast die partyserie “berliner stadtmusikanten” gestartet. warum und wieso?
ja genau….ich kam aus aachen nach berlin. dort war ich 1 jahr für den zivildienst. dann wollte ich mal weg. berlin war eine idee, die ich dann verwirklichte. einmal hier angekommen habe ich mich ziehmlich schnell eingelebt und mit ein paar dj freunden, wie ahmet coskun und daniel dreier die stadtmusikanten gegründet. das ganze war eine plattform für uns als djs, wir wollten spielen und mit eigenen veranstaltungen war das alles am einfachsten für unbekannte neulinge. wir hatten sehr gut laufende afterhours wie die annabar oder die im casino garten sonntags nachmittags. ausserdem dann auch unsere residency im sternradio. so fing dann alles an

- nun ziehst du bald um und neue releases von dir sind zu erwarten. erzähl doch mal…
nun also fast 10 jahre in berlin. time for a change. ich bin schon immer sehr viel und häufig umgezogen. vielleicht kommt daher der drang öfter mal etwas neues zu haben. ausserdem bin ich seit ein paar tagen 30 und meine uni habe ich auch geschafft. berlin ist in den letzten jahren auch sehr überlaufen! das ist sicherlich auch ein grund mehr. jetzt steht antwerpen vor der tür, wo ich sicherlich auch oft auflegen werde. ausserdem bleibt mir berlin immer verbunden und ich werde auch oft dort sein zum auflegen und meine freunde zu besuchen. ganz klar.

zur zeit stehen remixe vor der tür u.a. auf labels wie museek, plexi und fabriquez. diese kommen jetzt in den nächsten 2 monaten raus. ausserdem wird dann anfang des jahres noch eine full ep folgen und ein projekt mit seelenluft steht in den startlöchern. hier produzieren wir gerade den ersten hit

- du legst schon seit vielen jahren auf. was unterscheidet dich von den anderen und wie hart empfindest du den konkurenzkampf in berlin?
ja, lege nun schon seit geraumer zeit auf. mich unterscheidet der punkt von den anderen klar der konkurenzkampf in berlin ist sehr groß. es gibt so viele gute djs. dadurch, dass ich schon eine weile hier gelebt habe habe ich ein ziemlich großes netz an freunden und bekannten aufgebaut, die mir sehr geholfen haben und viele sachen ermöglicht haben (bei denen ich mich hier auch kurz für die tolle zeit bedanken möchte!)

ich versuche immer das zu machen was mir spass macht. die musik muss soul, groove und funk haben und muss am besten variabel sein. sicherlich, sagen viele aber das ganze sollte subjektiv sein.

- ist es eine art geheimwaffe unveröffentlichtes material von freunden zu spielen?
wenn die sachen gut sind auf jeden fall gerade in berlin wo es so viele djs gibt, die am wochenende teilweise 2-3 mal spielen ist es immer von vorteil sachen zu haben die viele noch nicht kennen.

- vinyl oder mp3: bist du open minded?
seit ca 1,5 oder 2 jahren spiele ich fast nur noch cds. das ganze kam als die promomails immer mehr wurden und ich diese gebrannt habe. seitdem kaufe ich auch viel digital bei WAS oder beatport natürlich….ausserdem mag ich die cdj’s sehr und es macht ebenso viel spass wie mit vinyl.und die möglichkeiten sind größer. man ist wesentlich flexibler. ich bin kein vinyljunky. ausserdem ist es sehr angenehm nur mit dem cd case zu reisen.

- gibt’s neben musik und parties sonst noch etwas in deinem leben, was du mit leidenschaft verfolgst?
sicherlich…vieles. musik und partys sind ein großer, wichtiger und schöner teil in meinem leben, von dem ich aber auch öfter mal abstand brauche. vielleicht auch noch ein grund die partystadt berlin zu verlassen. früher vor meiner zeit als dj bin ich 10 jahre motocross gefahren, da werde ich nun in belgien wieder mit anfangen. ein super ausgleich. wie so vieles anderes was das leben lebenswert macht. es bleibt noch so viel zu entdecken in allen bereichen die einem das leben und die welt bietet ich möchte auf jeden fall so viel wie möglich davon mitnehmen und erleben.

- was kannst du besonders gut? (z.b. knödel kochen, herzen brechen, keine beziehung eingehen…?)
knödel kochen kann ich gut. kochen allgemein. ich wollte mal koch werden früher, das hatte mir mein vater damals aber verboten, mit 14

- wann hörst du am liebsten ruhige musik?
das kommt ganz auf die stimmung drauf an. zuhause höre ich nicht so viel clubmusik. eher ruhigere sachen.

So here’s my Avalon-2005 New Years’ Eve live set, a minimal-tech mix from a time when minimal wasn’t yet a sexy word or the ‘flavor of the day’. It’s only about 45 minutes long, due to the delayed sound setup. Luckily, Avalon didn’t let the peeps in until I started spinning and as soon as they flew in the dance floor was on fire. It was quite a sight because I have never before experienced anything like it. I remember not wanting to leave once I was done with my set but I had another gig to rush to…

This 19th of December edition of the Amsterdam labelnight ‘Redevice invites…’ @ Studio 80 features the scandalously underrated Sub Static and Karloff Rekordings label-boss Falko Brocksieper. In order to keep up with our reputation of providing a playground for more experimental and absurd techno approaches, we’ve also invited Vera Heindel, San Proper & Kouam Djoko. Talk about letting those dogs out.
Here’s an exclusive interview plus mix avec Falko, to get the juices flowing.

Could you tell us about the founding of Sub Static and Karloff Recordings. What was your role in both labels?

Sub Static was founded in Cologne in 2000 when I met my long-term partner MIA. Our aim was just to create a small platform for our music and ideas. However this soon became a more serious occupation, as we increasingly enjoyed to work for international content and reputation. It led to the desire to release an even wider range of electronic music we loved, so the sublabel Karloff Rekordings was established in 2003.
At times we had approaches to grow the labels to a higher business level, but after all the basis of our motivation and qualification was always just to release and promote our favourite music.
Mia and I never had clearly defined roles in the label management, so anything within A&R, promotion, administration, accounting was my daily business. I also did all of the graphic design.

One of our favorite mixes of the year is the MNML SSG MX36 you did, which features half-forgotten gems from the likes of Mouse On Mars, Robert Hood & Plaid. Could you tell us something about your musical roots and artists that have most inspired you?

What first got me into techno was trance, mostly european stuff, in the early 90’s. However at the time this wasn’t even a clearly outlined genre, neither was it cheesy or commercial. It simply meant – techno that is monotonic and trippy. When I got my first set of turntables and started to spend more time in recordshops I soon discovered the music of Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Dan Bell, Woody McBride.. alot of mid-90’s minimal techno, mostly from the states. And soon after there was stuff like Aphex Twin, Mouse on Mars, Two Lone Swordsmen, Mille Plateaux & Rephlex stuff…. also alot of electro. Then even more techno – Cristian Vogel & Brighton crew, Maurizio, Kompakt… It’s been exciting times musically, which intensified for me even more when I moved to Cologne in 1997 to study at the Academy of Media Arts.
It’s this spirit of the 2nd half of the 90’s that I tried to capture in the recent mix you mentioned. Part of the spirit is also the health, complexity and mysticism of musical culture at that time — it seems like a very short time window between the farreaching innovation of electronic music, and the start of desktop producing, discogs, downloads and information overkill.

You originate from Cologne, but you operate from Berlin since 2004. Has this move influenced your productions/DJ-sets in a significant way?

I can’t really say how much influence this or the other city has. I think for the main part, moving to another place always changes your way of thinking, and gives you a new perspective on many things — which was also what I was looking for when I decided to move.
What I can say is – approving the clichee – Berlin has been and still is a very inspiring & vibrant place to live and I have no desire to live anywhere else.

You’ve been pretty productive lately when it comes to releasing. Do you have a lot of unreleased material stored up somewhere?

No, piles of unreleased material is what i never had, unfortunately. However this year has been quite productive indeed. Last year I finally released my 2nd album and was touring with my first live set, both helping me to get a fresh approach on the new productions that came out this year.

Any future plans we should know about?

Right now I’m working on a completely new live set, enabling me to be a bit more flexible and improvisational. It’s also giving me ideas for a couple of new tracks already. You can expect some new releases of me in early 2009, but it’s too soon now to announce any particulars.
Also I’m in the studio again with Benjamin Fehr, recording new material as ‘The Result’. Our first release came out this summer on his label Catenaccio. Another EP will be out soon on Brouqade Rec, as well as remixes on TicTacToe and the remarkable NervMusic from Moscow.

As we said in our first post – we love mixtapes. There’s magic in the best ones. A story that winds through often disparate territory, connecting and revealing influences in both the DJ who mixes and the artists being mixed.
Now despite the fact that we posted Bankwell Vol.1 nearly a month ago, our original intention was to have a sort-of annotated tracklisting to accompany the mix, giving us a chance to write about the tracks and maybe reveal a little of how we mashed all of ‘em together in the first place.
So given that the tracklisting is quite long and in the interest of keeping these posts short and sweet, we’re gonna take it about three or four tracks at a time and try to tell everyone a little about the who, why and how…

Defunkt, Cameras and Rocks, Welcome

Introductions are important. Just listen to any hip hop mixtape and you’ll hear that the effort put into making the intro generally results in it trumping the rest of the tape for entertainment value. Almost to the point where it seems a shame to continue on with the actual mix.

Now you’ll notice we didn’t do any scratching in this mix. Ableton hasn’t yet developed a function which allows you to scratch (though their recent involvement with Serato could prove otherwise). However we still don’t take the business of introductions lightly. We didn’t want to blow our wads too quickly with huge basslines or beats – we just needed something that builds, intrigues and makes you want to listen on.
Some of you may know Doctor Rockit by his more widely known pseudonym Matthew Herbert. Nowadays he can mostly be heard/read from through his website where he makes highly politicised musique concrete utilising found sound and a strict manifesto for creating pure “sound” music (no drum machines!!). Seriously, check out his blog for a project involving only sounds recorded during the life cycle of a pig.
Cameras and Rocks is a far cry from such projects. Essentially it’s a nice little building synth pattern giving way to a clicky house groove that makes perfect bedding for the multi-layered hoo-ha’s of Defunkt.
I’m not gonna act like I’m the hugest fan of Defunkt and their blend of funk, punk and disco. We discovered the song via the excellently curated series New York Noise on Soul Jazz Records and it’s acapella intro hit us immediately as prime intro fodder.
The lyrics are pretty straightforward. Dance. Party. Get Down. Something I think we can all aspire to and most importantly it sets the tone rather nicely for the next half hour.
The inclusion of Art Blakey’s introductory announcement is a straight-up cue from hip hop mixtapes the world over. Splicing a little thematically appopriate dialogue to say what would frankly sound pretty corny coming from the worldly portal of my own mouth.

And there it is. We’ve been introduced.
