Wale’s output is frequent. Sometimes–I might even say–too frequent. However, after three Heinekens I decided to go-ahead and grab “Bittersweet.” I think this is one of Wale’s better bangers that he has dropped in the past year. DJ Toomp produced it and while I believe he originally gave this one to B.O.B., Wale and Colin Munroe slow it down and play with the samples better. And, just like sped-up soul samples and autotune had their limelight, I think sampling decade old alternative rock is going to be the next great resource for producers.

This is the fifth entry in a series that will review every track on Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album.

“And if you listen hard enough I say some things”

As I begin this fifth entry about Jay-Z’s collaboration effort with Young Jeezy entitled Real As It Gets, I can’t help but feel like the album is losing steam. I could definitely be wrong because I don’t listen to the radio that often and I don’t watch 106 & Park because it comes on during the 5pm broadcast of Sportscenter. According to BallerStatus.com, he has surpassed the 900,000 albums sold mark which is a monumental accomplishment in today’s music market, let alone hip hop. He has gone nearly platinum in less than four weeks.

The song Real As It Gets is another good solid effort. This was a particular point in the album where I felt like they were going for the status quo as opposed reaching for something unique. The beat reminds me of Maybach Music. It’s that “New South” sound that aims for a grand, epic sounding record in the same vein as producers like DJ Toomp and J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League. The record was done by The Inkredibles, are a production duo from Richmond, Virginia, who have had a taste of almost every new artist from the South in the last 2 years plus credits for Fat Joe, Mary J. Blige, Lloyd, Akon, Trey Songz and everyone else in between.

Lyrically the song finds Jeezy saying more with less when usually he’s saying less with less. I like the line that says, “You know I keep that 47, Uday Hussein,” which is a reference to Uday Hussein, son of Saddam, who had a youtube video of himself shooting off an AK-47 assault rifle.

Lyrically the song finds Jay-Z letting Jeezy shine (he’s been known for doing this since Renegade on Blueprint 1 with Eminem) but still tossing out effortless gems like, “Set sail, I used to duck shots but now I eat quail.” Go ahead and marinate on that one for a minute.

Good Friday Hip Hop!

So the Sam Ash Beat Battle was supposed to be yesterday. During the 2 hour ride up yesterday, I called to double check for like the 3rd or 4th time and they told me that the organizers changed the date and the judges went to Sam Ash on Wednesday instead of Thursday. They thought that nobody showed up but they probably didn’t realize that the website said Thursday August 6th not Wednesday August 5th. The good news is that they are going to try again next Wednesday August 12th.

Big shot out to Sai Bills. I found a Youtube video (check it out below) where he was in the studio with DJ Toomp spitting a sick verse. We hit him up and he actually got back to us within a day. There are guys that I work with on a regular basis who don’t email me back so I respect the professionalism there. And besides that the dude is just a lyrical freak of nature. Hopefully we’ll get something together pretty quickly. Check him out right here:

Gracias a los chicos de HipHopIsRead podemos disfrutar de estos kits de producción de productores/grupos/mc’s conocidos. Y, ¿qué es eso de ‘kit de producción‘? Pues básicamente es una compilación de kicks, snares, claps… usados por ciertos artistas. No sé si los kicks, snares y demás son los originales, es decir, si han recopilado los ’sonidos’ del programa original que usaron los artistas, si han extraido el loop de la instrumental o si lo han conseguido por otros métodos, pero lo cierto es que hay bastantes loops para usar. This album was a classic that was infused into my DNA back in the day. I had a tape with this on one side and The Hard Boys – A-Town Hard Heads on the other side. Songs like “You Gets Nothing” and “Juvenile Shit” I know by heart and I had not heard them since ‘99 at the earliest. JT Money went on to record into the late 90’s but I wonder what happened to Debonair Drugs (AKA The Devil’s Dad). Atlanta and Miami had alot of parallels in Hip-Hop history as far as music and artists. One of the original gangsta groups out the south that I used to jam that never get the credit I think they deserve. I got the zshare file below and check out the video to “Dance All Nite”. Despite what anyone says, Jeezy is still one of the hottest artists in the game and has shown to be the best go-to artist in hip-hop. He’s back in the studio working on his new album and shows everyone his new Adidas. This video is tagged up way too much, but here it is.

Quelle année pourrie ! Whaow, c’est impressionnant. Si l’underground se maintient pour le moment hors de l’eau, le mainstream boit la tasse et ne devrait pas tarder à se noyer. Si on récapitule, quel artiste signé en major nous a époustouflé en 2009 ? Plies ? Oh que non ! Soulja Boy ? Oui, bien sûr, évidemment. Jim Jones ou Flo Rida alors ? Encore moins ! Bon et bien, Jadakiss avec son Last Kiss peut être ? Non, non et non ! Même pas lui ! Nous qui avions de bons espoirs sur son retour, c’est raté. Certes, Jada n’a pas sorti une bouse infâme mais son opus reste malgré tout indigne d’un grand album de Hip Hop. Puis, en attendant le come-back de l’écurie Aftermath, rien de très alléchant ne se profile à l’horizon. A moins que Rick Ross, qui sort son troisième essai ce 21 avril, n’inverse la tendance. Avouez que ce ne serait quand même pas un luxe. Confiance donc, sachant que sur le papier, le Big Boss ne nous a jamais vraiment déçu. Puis, à en juger les premiers extraits de ce Deeper Than Rap, nous aurions de bonnes chances de retrouver le sourire. Le soleil printanier dissiperait-il la brume hivernale ? Attention quand même, il ne faut jamais crier victoire trop tôt.

A ce jour, Rick Ross se résume en trois albums : Port Of Miami, Trilla et maintenant Deeper Than Rap. A noter qu’avec les années, il a prit sérieusement confiance en lui, comme en atteste l’intitulé de son dernier bébé. A présent, Ricky n’est plus le petit hustler du hood qu’il était à ses débuts. C’est devenu quelqu’un d’important. Avec tout son argent, il a pu accroître sa collection de lunettes de soleil, s’acheter les meilleurs cigares de Floride et les plus beaux costumes de Miami. L’homme est un flambeur né, un passionné du luxe.

Pour ce troisième et nouvel essai, Rick Ross s’est endimanché. Mais jusque là, rien de bien surprenant. Quand on est un Big Boss, il est impératif de soigner sa superbe, n’est ce pas ? Mais pour Deeper Than Rap, le rappeur a souhaité avoir une image irréprochable. Costume blanc, montures proéminentes, rose en boutonnière, barbe parfaitement lustrée et taillée, la très grande classe. En toute logique, le premier single du disque retranscrit parfaitement cette notion d’élégance si chère à l’artiste. “Magnificent“, le titre est évocateur mais aucunement dénué de sens. Pour la deuxième fois consécutive, les J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League ont répondu présents à l’invitation du gros Ricky. Ici, ils livrent une production fraîche et ensoleillée, proche du style Trilla. A ce titre, on les retrouvera sur une bonne partie de l’album, notamment sur le très attendu “Mayback Music 2” feat. Lil Wayne, T-Pain et Kanye West. Même si leur travail est fort appréciable sur cette piste, ils n’empêchent pas T-Pain de tâcher la chanson de part sa présence et sa voix irritable. Comparée à la première version, véritable modèle de réussite, cette seconde est trop luxueuse, trop commerciale, trop tape à l’œil. Pour faire court, elle n’apporte rien de plus à l’originale, bien au contraire.

Malheureusement, ce constat est un peu le défaut majeur du disque. A vouloir trop parfaire son image, Rick Ross en a oublié le naturel. Deeper Than Rap regorge de soleil, de luxure, de richesse et, quelques fois, est légèrement surjoué. A qui la faute ? Certainement pas aux productions car celles-ci ont été triées sur le carreau, comme sur les albums précédents. Ce n’est pas dû, non plus, aux performances de Rick Ross car à vrai dire, il s’est amélioré à ce niveau là. En revanche, l’abondance de chanteurs R&B pourrait bien être la raison. Voyez plutôt cette liste non exhaustive : John Legend, Ne-Yo, Robin Thicke, T-Pain, Magazeen, The Dream, Foxy Brown, Avery Storm, le moins que l’on puisse dire, c’est qu’il y a de quoi faire. Et pour le coup, il en a trop fait ! Contrairement à Port Of Miami et Trilla, Deeper Than Rap est davantage orienté ballades chantonnées que streets bangers. Comme le disque est très bien produit, on passe généralement d’excellents moments (“Magnificent” feat John Legend, “Rich Off Cocaine“, “Valley Of Death“). Cependant, quand la limite est franchie et que les morceaux deviennent mielleux et édulcorés, ça saoule ! Exemple avec le mollasson “Yacht Club” et le forain “Lay Back” feat Robin Thicke que l’on croirait échappé du dernier album d’Akon. Méfiance donc, car ces refrains chantés dans les aigus peuvent très rapidement casser les oreilles si ils abondent.

Néanmoins, que les fans se rassurent, Deeper Than Rap reste un bon cru 2009. Si aucun son ne prend réellement l’empleur d’un “Hustlin’“, on trouve quand même de belles petites bombes à se mettre sous la dent, comme ce “Usual Suspects” feat. Nas. Produit par The Inkredibles, ce morceau nous replonge dans la bonne ambiance de Trilla, la touche Queensbridge en plus. Si la présence du maître Nasir Jones demeure inattendue sur un tel projet, elle mettra tout le monde d’accord en terme de qualité, le new-yorkais éclipsant même la performance du sudiste. Ceux qui adulaient le Rick Ross version dirty préféreront “Mafia Music” et “Face” (feat. Trina) à “All I Really Want” (feat. The Dream) et “Bossy Lady” (feat. Ne-Yo).

Avec ce nouvel album, le Boss Ricky Ross a réussit la passe de trois. Deeper Than Rap n’est pas inférieur à ses prédécesseurs, loin s’en faut. Très homogène dans la forme, proche de Trilla dans le fond, il vient confirmer la stature actuelle de Rick Ross dans le rap game. Les instrumentaux ensoleillés des J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League et consorts sont toujours aussi plaisants à entendre. Toutefois, le disque aurait gagné a être allégé de quelques invités, notamment Robin Thicke, pas du tout dans son élément sur “Lay Back“.
Cet opus apporte enfin un peu de lumière sur cette année rapologique désolante. Deeper Than Rap est certainement l’album mainstream le plus sympathique de l’année, et Rick Ross le premier ‘gros artiste’ (dans tous les sens du terme) à ne pas décevoir en 2009. Avant Relapse d’Eminem, Blackout 2 de Method Man et Redman et Crime Pays de Cam’Ron, ce disque fera patienter les plus impatients.
