DJ Reality Show “Party Rocka”…..coming soon

Hoe snel het kan gaan met DJ’s in de muziekwereld? Dat blijkt wel als we de carrière van Demoniak onder de loep nemen. Sinds het samengaan van DJ Zof & SMB is het heel hard gegaan met deze jonge talenten. Hun debuut EP “Colontrino” klapte er duidelijk fantastisch in. Daarna ging alles in een stroomversnelling. Demoniak stond afgelopen zomer op de grootste festival als Defqon.1, Laundry Day, Q-Base én Summerfestival. Tevens draaiden ze niet in de minste discotheken. Complex, The Oh!, Zino en Le Tremplin pronkten in de agenda. De producties werden populairder, wat resulteerde in redelijk wat aanwezigheid op de beste compilatie CD’s. Al gauw kwamen ze bij Dirty Workz in beeld. Deze nieuwe “Dirty Workz Soldiers” staan zaterdag op Dirty Workz Deluxe in de Lotto Arena te Antwerpen. En in 2010 zullen ze verder gaan waar ze zijn gebleven. Hits maken en het publiek verwennen. Tijd dus om wat vragen te stellen aan dit energieke en populaire duo!

Interview Demoniak

1. Stel jullie eens kort voor? Wie zijn jullie en wat doen jullie in het dagelijks leven?

Wij zijn Geoffrey & Nico en zijn beiden afkomstig van Gavere (Jawel, bakermat van The Oh). Geoffrey is 22 & Nico 20.

2. Waar besteden jullie graag je vrije tijd aan uit?

In onze vrije tijd spenderen we graag tijd door met vrienden, de gewoonlijke dingen dus.

3. Jullie draaiden voorheen als solo DJ’s. Hoe zijn jullie bij elkaar terecht gekomen en wat heeft jullie doen besluiten om samen te gaan?

Wij hebben elkaar ontmoet in een plaatselijke platenwinkel en zijn zo aan de praat geraakt. Als snel werd duidelijk dat we dezelfde inzichten hadden en besloten om samen enkele tracks te maken. Daardoor volgden er dan ook bookings als DUO en zo hebben we eigenlijk na verloop van tijd besloten om als DJ-Duo verder te gaan.

4. Beschrijf elkaar eens en hoe zit het met jullie vriendschap buiten het draaien/produceren om?

Nico is eerder een persoon die graag alles op zich laat afkomen, terwijl Geoffrey graag de touwtjes in eigen handen neemt. Buiten het draaien/producen zijn wij ook gewoon beste maatjes die buiten de bookings om ook vaak wat chills gaan doen.

5. Wanneer zijn jullie in aanraking gekomen met Jump muziek?

Dat zal rond de periode van “Big Orgus” geweest zijn, natuurlijk als je in Gavere woont kan je het niet echt omzeilen hé.

6. Geef eens een korte uitleg voer jullie DJ carrière en wie is er belangrijk geweest voor jullie in jullie DJ carrière tot nu toe?

Voor ons zijn er toch al enkele mensen die zéér belangrijk geweest zijn, die ons altijd gesteund & geholpen hebben op bepaalde vlakken.
De mensen die we bedoelen zullen zich wel aangesproken voelen.

7. De “Colontrino EP” sloeg in als een bom. Werkelijk vette plaat! Hoe belangrijk was deze release voor jullie carrière?

Dank je wel .
Deze was enorm belangrijk achteraf bekeken… Allereerst omdat het de naamswijziging van ‘ZOF & SMB’ naar DEMONIAK met zich meebracht, maar ook omdat het natuurlijk veel deuren opende. Heel wat mensen kregen interesse in ons en dat resulteerde in heel wat bookings.

8. Jullie stijl is de laatste tijd wat veranderd. Het is wat meer richting “Hard Jump” gegaan om het een naam te geven. Meer richting het typische Dirty Workz Jump/Hardstyle crossover-sound. Waarom zijn jullie niet bij jullie eigen oude sound gebleven?

Wij hebben nooit echt een sound gehad waarvan we dachten “Ok, dit is het! En hierbij blijven we.”
Wij maken gewoon wat we leuk vinden en momenteel is dat deze stijl, maar het kan evengoed zijn dat de volgende release terug wat anders wordt.

9. Jullie “sound” gaat dus ook een beetje richting Hardstyle. Kunnen we binnenkort een Hardstyle release verwachten omdat deze stap niet echt heel groot is?

De stap is toch nog groter dan je denkt, maar voorlopig zegt echte Hardstyle ons niets om te maken, maar zeg nooit nooit in het leven.

10. Jullie staan aanstaande zaterdag op Dirty Workz Deluxe in de Lotto Arena te Antwerpen. Hoe leven jullie toe naar een dergelijk groot evenement? En wat betekent dit feest voor jullie? Al een beetje in gedachte wat de bezoekers kunnen verwachten van jullie set?

Dit is zo 1 van die feesten waarnaar je weken, maanden naar uitkijkt. Dit geldt niet enkel voor bezoekers, maar zeker ook voor ons! De sfeer en de omkadering is echt zo TOP waardoor je echt wel kan zeggen dat de dagen afgeteld worden.
De mensen mogen een typische energieke Demoniak set verwachten, met enkele sfeermomentjes er in verwerkt.

11. In hoeverre is Coone, label manager van Dirty Workz, belangrijk voor jullie geweest?

Koen, is samen met nog enkele artiesten altijd al een inspiratiebron voor ons geweest. En dat hij ons de kans gaf om op het toplabel van België ons de kans te geven ons ding te doen, zullen we zeker niet snel vergeten.

12. Produceren jullie ook echt evenveel samen of steekt de verdeling anders in elkaar?

Wij komen in de week vaak samen om in de Studio te duiken, maar het kan ook dat er al eens afzonderlijk wordt verder gewerkt aan tracks, met de nodige aanvullingen van de ander.

13. Hoe ziet een dagje of avondje produceren eruit bij jullie? Hard werken of met wodka zoals DJ Jones zei in zijn interview?

Producen is (meestal) voor ons een vorm van ontspannen, dus kan er af en toe wel eens een flesje aan te pas komen ja. Behalve als Jonas langskomt, dan is het standaard een flesje haha.

14. Wat was de reactie nadat jullie te horen kregen dat jullie op Defqon.1 mochten draaien?

“Oh my god, dat meen je niet?!” Dat zal wel zoiets geweest zijn. Dat kwam eigenlijk als een complete surprise, maar het was echt een dagje om U tegen te zeggen!

15. Demoniak stond afgelopen zomer op vele grote festivals. Naast Defqon.1 stonden jullie ook op Laundry Day, Summerfestival en The Qontinent. Welk feest gaf de beste beleving en sfeer?

Dit was duidelijk Laundry Day! Daar stonden er echt een hoop mensen voor ons die zichzelf helemaal gaven, zo’n dingen geven je kippenvel van kop tot teen.
Maar dat gevoel heb je wel bij bijna elk festival, maar Laundry Day stak er toch met kop & schouders bovenuit voor ons persoonlijk.

16. Wat is jullie mening over de digitalisering van de muziek? En wat vinden jullie dat er eindelijk steeds meer online webshops komen waar men legaal downloads kan kopen?

Dat is zeker een goede zaak, natuurlijk is het nog steeds het leukste als artiest om je eigen vinyl in je handen te hebben, maar we leven in de 21e eeuw en daar kan je nu éénmaal niet om.

17. Met welk media draaien jullie het liefst? Met Vinyl, CD of Laptop?

Wij gebruiken vooral CD toch, werkt het makkelijkst en je kan het makkelijk meesleuren ? Al vinden wij het gevoel van draaien met vinyl ook super hoor. Voor de live-act maken we ook gebruik van een laptop.

18. Wat betekent Dirty Workz voor jullie?

Het gehele Dirty Workz plaatje zit hem in het totale plaatje van de feesten, het artwork, de muziek, de deejay’s,… Waarbij alles perfect op elkaar afgestemd wordt, voor ons is het toch het leading label van België.

29. Beste (Jump/Tek) – hit van dit jaar?

Hoh dat is wel een moeilijke… Er zijn volgens ons heel wat leuke dingen uitgekomen dit jaar, waaronder onze eigen SHAKE die het best wel goed doet/deed. Een echte winnaar hebben we niet.

20. Jullie staan geregeld in discotheek Complex. Wat voor gevoel heerst daar en hoe omschrijf je deze sfeer?

Complex is een plaats waar iedere harderstyles-dj van ons landje toch wel zou willen spelen en om daar dan zo vaak te mogen spelen geeft je echt een groot gevoel van waardering. Het volk gaat er ook altijd op zijn eigen stijl heel erg los! We hebben er al menig avondjes kunnen genieten.

21. Er zit hedendaags een groot verschil in populariteit van Jump muziek tussen Nederland en België. Hebben jullie een verklaring waarom het in België wel lukt en in Nederland niet? En zien jullie kansen in Nederland?

Er was een tijd dat jump heel hot was in Nederland, maar door de commercialisering is alles een beetje fout gelopen.
Ook hebben we het gevoel dat in NL alles toch nog harder moet zijn dan hier, maar we hebben wel gemerkt op defqon & q-base dat het toch nog heel erg los ging bij onze noorderburen.

22. 2010 staat voor de deur. Hebben jullie nog bepaalde voornemens voor ogen op het gebied van produceren en draaien?

Voor ons mag 2010 even boeiend worden als 2009. Waar we heel wat leuke dingen hebben mogen beleven.

Of course I am my own favorite DJ. I listen to my own mixes, play them for others, remix a multitude of songs weekly and although my releases are not being played by every DJ or radio station, the respect by many is there. You should also know I didn’t get into this for the status just the respect and the music.

DJ culture has long been the backbone of nightlife: if you have the right DJ spinning it can be the difference between a lot of folks sitting around talking over drinks or crowds rushing in to hear the best music-regardless of the atmosphere (although flashing lights are nice).

My list is just that-my opinion, lumped in with the millions of others. Only consider these guys not just because I say so but I have heard them all spin LIVE and I have at least one or more of their mixes. Ahh, now we separate ourselves from all the other bloggers online. Yes indeed!

DJ Erick Morillo is a constant in dance music the world over. He claims NJ as home, runs one of the most respected super club brands in the world in NYC known as Pacha, and does residencies in Miami (where I hear he has been living for a while), Ibiza (THE dance music capital of the world) and endless other places. He also has a hot dance label, Subliminal and one of the most annoying dance anthems ever, “I Like To Move It” under the name Reel 2 Real. i first met this fine young man in 1997 at the bmg offices with rainbow if memory serves me correctly.

he couldn’t have been a day over 15 at the time and to see that earnest youngin turn into the well rounded dude and peer he now is puts a smile on my face.

i don’t have many close friends, and definitely not many “new” ones. It takes a special person to last 10 years in my life and in all honesty, i am just getting to really know kaelah since moving back to toronto in 2006.

congrats on making it to this first milestone, homie. i hope your 25th year is amazing and brings you perspective, growth and promise!

So yes, I’m bogus as hell. It’s been over a month since I last posted. (Did you even notice?)

Well, contrary to popular belief I haven’t been spinning my wheels and acting as if I’m on a paid vacation. Quite the opposite, I’ve been a busy little bee doing academic research chores like applying for grants, editing audio, contemplating my academic future, revising my proposal wah wah wah, woo woo woo.

So exciting right?

But it’s the holidays!! Yippee!!!

And I have a gift for you…a break from my “scholastic” existential navel gazing! I’m going to cut straight to the chase and invite you to listen and enjoy some music from three FABULOUS events I attended recently.

#1 Spreadlove: The Felabration Edition

Spreadlove is one of my favorite monthly events. It’s hosted by one of my favorite DJs, DJ Kemit. October’s installation was a tribute to the incomparable Fela Kuti. So of course that means lots of Fela music, afrobeat, and music from the African diaspora.

As if that weren’t enough to guarantee my attendance spreadlove also featured two of my absolute favorite musicians: DJ Rich Medina and the legendary Roy “everybody loves the sunshine” Ayers.

Check out this video of Mr. Ayers playing vibes and serving as high priest of soul. The feeling in that place was electric.

#2 Reclaiming the “Rock” in Black Musical Expression

The was a phenomenal conference hosted by the Archives of African American Music and Culture at Indiana University meant to explore the legacy and current climate of Black folks who are all about rock music.

Now the absolute best part of this conference is that it wasn’t a bunch of talking heads theorizing about music and meaning, but the lineup was rife with some of my favorite music journalists/bloggers such as Greg Tate and Rob Fields and musicians like Tamar Kali and Linda Tillery.

So before this conference I had heard of Tamar Kali (mainly from her appearance in Afropunk) but she did a HELLUVA concert and converted me to her fold. Man alive, her voice is AMAZING. She has the vocal control and range of your favorite soul diva and the attitude that & don’t give a fuck attitude of the punk scene. (I’m street teaming hard right?) AND she be singing about stuff of substance.

#3 Tambor Party

So last Saturday night I roll up in this downtown club called Filter (fka the Mark) and I already knew based on the DJ line up that I would be on the dance floor all night. DJs Tabone and Stan Zeff’s crew did not let me down. It was all house music ALL house music. It reminded me so much of clubs in London where we would dance all night to an amazing mix of house, broken beat, and tribal house. AMAZING.

Two musical moments stick out for me. The first was a special live by Tribe Records UK artist Nathan Adams. I was SO happy he was there because I’ve loved his song “Circles” for years and I never knew who the hell sang it!  Mystery solved.

The second is when towards the end of the night the DJ played the Quintin Harris remix of Donnie’s “Cloud 9.”  I almost broke the heels on my shoes spinning around to this song.

So those are some of the highlights of the last few weeks. Special shout out to Bugz in the Attic/Jazznova event from last week too. And although December is right around the corner, there’s so much to look forward to before 2010 gets here!

La promotion de cet événement présente différents aspects :

- des flyers disponibles dans différents points de vente

- spot télé sur les chaînes musicales
- présence sur plusieurs réseaux sociaux (Facebook, Netlog, Myspace)
- présence sur différents sites de soirées (NetEvents.be, BrusselsLife.be, NightCode.be, QueFaire.be, …)
- différents jeux concours : certains permettent de gagner des entrées gratuites et d’autres offraient la possibilité d’être LE dj qui allait ouvrir la salle Techno (fin le 4/11).

Cet event n’est pas tout à fait récent mais suscite tout de même chaque année un certain intérêt de la part des clubbers. Un concept vibrant et un line-up décoiffant, la Groove City est devenue une soirée incontournable.
Le type de promotion a bien été déterminé. La communication de cet événement s’est faite aux endroits susceptibles d’interpeller la cible. Personnellement, c’est pour le flyer que j’ai eu un coup de cœur. Il est non seulement pratique mais aussi complet (toutes les infos nécessaires s’y trouvent : points de vente, accès, programme, …).

A noter dans tous les agendas…

Au fait, si tu es né un 21 novembre : l’entrée t’est offerte !

Lockers

Er zijn lockers beschikbaar aan de ingang om je jas en spullen veilig op te bergen. Je hebt de ganse nacht toegang tot je locker. Een locker huren kost je 5€ + 5€ waarborg. De waarborg krijg je terug bij het inleveren van je sleutel.

Wieder einmal ein Abend mit einer begabten Lokalgrösse, die zu Weltruhm gekommen ist. Ursprünglich unter dem Pseudonym Kosmo als MC der legendären und gefürchteten Aarauer Rap-Crew „3.Strophe“ bekannt, tourt DJ Pagalé heutzutage mit seinem Kollegen Seniorr Raphaelé erfolgreich durch die Schweizer Clublandschaft und verdient sich dabei eine goldene Nase. Wer ihn kennt, weiss drei Dinge mit Sicherheit. Diese Nase ist riesig, sein Ego übertrifft die Grösse seiner Nase bei weitem und als DJ hat er’s derbe drauf. Genauso wichtig ist aber der musikalische Austausch, und genau darum geht es einmal mehr bei Diggin’ In The Crates: DJ Razorcut und Smooth Operator stöbern in ihren Plattenkisten und sorgen dafür, dass die Boxen nie verstummen werden. Daneben könnt Ihr selber eure Lieblingsplatten mitbringen und zeigen, was Ihr in den letzten Monaten in den Funk-, Soul-, Jazz-, HipHop-, Reggae-, Afrobeat- oder Was-auch-immer-Crates der Plattenläden dieser Welt gefunden habt: Rare und obskure Scheiben, vergessene Klassiker oder einfach aktuelle Lieblingslieder.

17.12.09 - Live! Notorious (AG)

„Notorious“ heisst das neue groovige Experiment. Die Versuchsanordnung lässt vermuten, dass es das Barfum zum Kochen bringen wird: Einige der beteiligten Experten waren schon im Sommer auf der Blaxploitation-Bühne anzutreffen und haben damals genügend überzeugende Indizien dafür geliefert.
Das Quintett mit Diandra Russo (Sax) und ihren vier Jungs, den Czaja Brothers (Piano, Bass), Sebastian Krebs (Posaune) und Nicolas Vogel (Drums), nennt die tiefe Funk- und Jazzszene als Inspirationsquelle und hat eine reiche Palette verschiedenster Vibes und Grooves am Start. Put on your dancing shoes!!

Despues de chutarnos mas de una hora de unos DJ’s con mascaritas que no eran malos pero no me rayaron, Alain M, mejor conocido como A-TRAK empezo con su set que si tubiera que definirlo en una palabra seria RARO.

El inicio estubo brutal, con mucha energia para poner a todos como loco, cuando dijo “What’s Up Mexico City” la gente grito como loca, cuando la flojera de ir al area de fumar me gano, decidi fumar dentro de la pista, la locura se sentia en cada golpe, los bits te cacheteban y el A-TRAK nos dio una catedra de como se scratchean los discos.

Me declaro fan del disco “Dirty South Dance” y todo el principio del set fue algo muy lejano a este, pero no por eso malo. De vuelta con mis compañeros de guerra, suenan los Jackson 5 y uff una serie de remixes que pasan lista a Snoop Dog, Bestie Boys y muchos mas para lo que seria el punto mas alto de la fiesta.

La discusion empieza, A-TRAK esta dando una mejor fiesta que los 2 MANY DJ’s, despues de todo su estilo se parece, pero A-TRAK es la sangre nueva, nunca habia visto que un solo DJ hiciera tanto, sin mayor ayuda que su lap y sus tornas.

El inicio de ROBOT ROCK me vuela la cabeza para lo que podriamos llamar el principio del fin, la curva de la emocion llega la nivel mas alto cuando Alain ejecuta un solo de scratch que mi unico simil seria el solo de guitarra de ANGUS YOUNG una semana antes en el concierto de AC/DC. Realmente este chamaco le ganaria a los viejos lobos de mar???

Pues como si el sr. Trak hubiera escuchado la conversacion, decide poner de forma integra el remix de los 2 Many de Robot Rock, sabe quienes son los que empezaron esto.

Alain ya tenia mi respeto pero de repente le sale lo novato, la fiesta le gana y empieza a poner rolas que solo el entiende y que hacen que la gente se de cuenta que ya es tarde y tiene que llegar a casa, las personas se empiezan a sentar y a preguntar a que hora se van a ir. Por mas que intente seguir, la weva me gano, resumo con:

Aunque  A-TRAK es la sangre nueva, le falta poder controlar la fiesta, es un niño que todavia huele a chis, pero cuidado, por que fui testigo de alguien que algunos años va redefinir lo que es la fiesta.

Twee jaar na zijn vorige succesvolle “Q-Ic & Friends” album komt Q-Ic met een tweede album. Na een lange tijd in zijn studio te hebben gewerkt is het album eindelijk af. Het album gaat “Eat This!” heten en is verkrijgbaar vanaf deze week. Het album bevat 13 tracks en bestaat uit exclusieve nieuwe solo producties en samenwerkingen met Lethal MG, Dr.Rude & Qatja S, Marco Remus, Kamikaze & Mr. Eyez en Chintoq. Ook bevat het album één bonus track, welke alleen maar verkrijgbaar zal zijn op deze CD. Naast het album komt er ook een vinyl sampler uit met vier nummers van het album. Op de CD staan allemaal full length versions. Het album zal gereleased worden op het label van Toffmusic.

Afgelopen zaterdag was de eerste release party van het album in discotheek Complex. Het andere feestje zal plaats vinden in discotheek Le Cap’tain op 4 december. Tijdens dit feestje worden er gratis CD’s en T-Shirts weggegeven.
