La utilización de las grandes redes eléctricas de alta tensión como proveedoras de conexión de Internet no ha tenido el éxito que se esperaba de ellas. Pero en casa, se puede aprovechar la instalación eléctrica para una completa red de comunicación.

D-Link ha presentado su nuevo kit PowerLine (DHP-343) capaz de crear o ampliar una red doméstica conectando hasta cuatro dispositivos a partir de la instalación eléctrica de cualquier hogar y permite descargas de hasta 200 Mbps.

El kit PowerLine HD de D-Link incluye el nuevo switch PowerLine HD (DHP-342) de 4 puertos Ethernet y un adaptador PowerLine HD Ethernet (DHP-302) que dotan al usuario de todos los recursos necesarios para conectar fácilmente hasta cuatro dispositivos en red como pueden ser consolas de juegos, servidores de impresión, ordenadores o dispositivos de almacenamiento, sin introducir un solo cable más ni utilizar recursos de red adicionales más allá de los enchufes convencionales.

El switch PowerLine HD (DHP-342) dispone de cuatro puertos LAN para conectar equipos y ponerlos en red por toda la casa a través del cableado eléctrico. Dispone de un botón que activa la encriptación de la comunicación para así evitar posibles accesos no autorizados.

El kit es capaz de ofrecer velocidades de transferencia de hasta 200 Mbps, garantizando un óptimo rendimiento de aplicaciones que requieren un gran ancho de banda como el video streaming de alta definición, las llamadas de voz sobre IP, o sesiones de juegos online maratonianas. Además, incluye tecnología de priorización del tráfico basado en tecnología QoS (Quality of Service) que garantiza la calidad de comunicación necesaria para disfrutar de las aplicaciones multimedia más avanzadas, sin sufrir pérdidas de rendimiento aunque otros usuarios se conecten a Internet o descarguen archivos al mismo tiempo.

Este producto también aprovecha las ventajas de la tecnología D-Link Green con un modo de ahorro de energía que reduce su consumo y que mientras no se realizan transmisión de datos en un periodo de tiempo el adaptador se configura automáticamente en modo de espera de bajo consumo.

Come detto in un post precedente (questo), il bootloader ADAM2 che trovate su molti modem/router (fra i quali Dlink )  è soggetto ad una frequente “deframmentazione” della env, cioè della partizione (mtd3) contenente le variabili di sistema, e questo problema può portare il modem/router in “stallo”.

Per porre rimedio a questo problema il team routertech ha approntato nell’ultima versione del firmware (2.91.1) lo script “auto_defragenv.sh” che controlla il livello di deframmentazione rispetto ad un valore di soglia (di default 30) e se superiore, deframmenta la env.

Lo script va avviato a mano (usando la schermata “Run Command”), oppure si può settare cron in modo che avvii il controllo ad intervalli regolari.

Nel mio caso ho scelto di far eseguire il controllo ogni domenica alle 23.30, ed ho impostato il tutto eseguendo il comando:

cronjob-env.sh “auto_defragenv.sh&” “30″ “23″ “*” “*” “0″ “RT_cmd_2″

cronjob-env.sh crea un nuovo job nella crontab ed inoltre “associa” una variabile a questo nella env, nel mio caso ho dato il nome “RT_cmd_2″: in questo modo anche in caso di riavvii, l’impostazione rimane memorizzata.

In my social media class, we had a presentation from Molson’s community relations team. They gave out loads of information on how they use social media to gain feedback  and, more importantly, reach out to the community. From using tracking tools like Radian 6 to blogging releases that traditional news would not carry, Molson definatly is paving the way in social media. From what I am told, the stuff Molson is doing is being published into textbooks. Crazy.

I’ll get more in-depth on what they taught us for another post, alas I have something else on my mind.

Up late a couple nights ago, I was checking my Twitter feed and I got curious: how many of the big companies are using Twitter?

The reason I brought up Molson, was to, primarily, give a big shout out to Tonia Hammer (@MolsonTonia) and Graeme Switzer (@MolsonGraeme) for an amazing insight to corporate social media but also because they told us about a problem that I hadn’t thought of: they had trouble with a name they wanted on Twitter but another Tweeter had already been using it.

Great, I thought. So now we’ll see people registering many Twitter names, just like many do for domain names, and sell them on eBay? Well, no.

The micro-blogging site does have name squatting and impersonation policies to help companies gain their names back; however, both base infringement on the fake account’s tweets. In other words, if the account stays quiet, no harm and no foul — until the company wants the name.

Molson did end up securing that account but it was the user who had agreed to give the handle over and, apparently, got quite a bit of recognition from the company for his good deed.

Join the revolution.

It is not like 20, or even 10, years ago where the only place to vent was through letters-to-the-editor in your local newspaper. Even then you where lucky to be published.

In this day and age, everyone’s opinions matter. Twitter is a site where people can let their thoughts be known in quick 140-character sentences. It is just an amazing tool for big or small companies to monitor how their brand is fairing in the market.

With that I give you the list of giant corporations that have have a twitter account, but are not using it for some odd reason:

• @Walmart (The account already has over 1,000 followers, think people want to hear from them?)
• @Target (This could be owned by the company since it displays the logo – 18 followers)
• @Zellers (Canadian competition for Walmart, it is very similar to Target in the U.S. – six followers)
• @Loblaws (I work at this grocery store – 27 followers who want to see the company do better)
• @FutureShop (Canadian electronic store, similar to BestBuy. The account is suspended, I guess someone got caught for one of the reasons above. Why hasn’t the company contacted Twitter to use it?) [Correction: FutureShop holds the @FS_Deals, @FS_GetItFirst and @FS_Connect Twiiter accounts]
  
• @Bell & @BellCanada (This giant phone company advertises the use of Twitter on their phones, but don’t use their Twitter account. Unless it is not Bell)
• @DLink (A networking company that doesn’t network. Another suspended account)
• @LinkSys (Only one tweet – “coding…”, may not be the actual competitor to DLink – 39 followers that probably think it is)

There are probably many, many more companies out there that do not fully understand what social media can bring. Twitter as already launched it’s tips and tricks for businesses to adapt the site for customer contact. It is, also, why I am here. I intend on (learning how to) breaking down social media to the corporate suits — it is not just Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, it is a tool to gain trust among your customers.

Causas de interferencia en señal inalámbrica

Uno de los problemas más comunes que nos encontramos con las señales inalámbricas con las interferencias, a continuación describo algunas interferencias más comunes y luego algunas soluciones sencillas pero de mucha utilidad.

Interferencias:

1. Debido a que las redes inalámbricas utilizan ondas de radio para transmitir señales, es posible que los electrodomésticos típicos – como su horno de microondas, su teléfono inalámbrico e incluso el monitor para bebé y el bluetooth de un celular puedan interferir con esta señal. Asegúrese de apartar el enrutador (Router) inalámbrico de esos electrodomésticos que utilizan el mismo margen de frecuencia de 2.4GHz.

2. Otras causas de interferencia son ladrillos y paredes de block, puertas de metal, marcos de metal en ventanas y puertas, y gabinetes de metal macizo.

Soluciones:

1. Apartar el enrutador (Router)  más lejos del aparato u objeto que hace interferencia.

2. Si hay interferencia con un teléfono, usted puede cambiar el canal del teléfono o del Router.  Así se hallan en distintos canales.  Si aún hay mucha interferencia, puede que tenga que comprar un sistema de teléfono distinto que opere en 900MHz o 5GHz.

Ubique el enrutador (Router) inalámbrico en una posición central dentro de su casa como son la sala de estar o la oficina.

3.  Acomode la antena inalámbrica de la computadora de escritorio o de la laptop de modo que apunte hacia el enrutador inalámbrico.

4. Evite ubicar la antena cerca de una pared exterior (a menos que usted quiera estar afuera).

5. Si usted quiere conectarse afuera de su casa, coloque el enrutador cerca de una ventana.

6. Ubique el punto de acceso lo más alto posible. Si su red atraviesa varios pisos, intente ubicar el punto de acceso en el piso superior.

7. Cambie el canal de su enrutador inalámbrico

8. Si está experimentando una pérdida frecuente de conexiones en su red inalámbrica o interferencias de otra red puede que la causa más probable sea el uso del mismo canal. Si usted y su vecino tienen una red inalámbrica instalada en el canal 6, entonces usted puede experimentar un poco de interferencia. Intente cambiando a un canal distinto ya sea al 1 o al 11.

9. Mejore la potencia de la señal de su Router inalámbrico

La potencia de la señal inalámbrica depende de muchos factores ambientales, tales como

ventanas, paredes y muebles. El vidrio no bloquea la señal. En la medida de lo posible, ubique

el enrutador inalámbrico en el centro del área que quiere cubrir tratando de perder la menor

cantidad posible de señal a través las paredes.

Una antena de alta ganancia puede incrementar la potencia de las señales salientes y mejorar la recepción de las señales entrantes. Esta potencia y sensibilidad de señal adicional no sólo amplía el alcance de su red inalámbrica, sino que también mejora la confiabilidad de las comunicaciones de corto alcance reduciendo las retransmisiones debido a los errores por la recepción de señales débiles.

Los equipos de antena de alta ganancia han sido desarrollados para ayudar a incrementar el rango efectivo de las redes  hogareñas o de pequeñas empresas. Las soluciones de la antena incluyen un equipo de antena de alta ganancia para conexiones.  Instalar una antena de alta ganancia es fácil. Sólo desenrosque la/s antena/s actual/es de su Router, de su punto de acceso o puente y coloque la antena de alta ganancia.

10. Mejore el alcance inalámbrico

Imagine la libertad de trabajar y jugar en cualquier habitación de su hogar u oficina sin zonas muertas. Navegue por la web desde su cuarto. Juegue con juegos en línea en su sala de estar. O reproduzca música digital desde su cocina. Todo es posible cuando tiene un mayor alcance.

¿Por qué importa el alcance?

El alcance es el área de cobertura efectiva de su red inalámbrica. El alcance se verá afectado por la construcción de su casa, incluyendo las ventanas y paredes y por otros dispositivos inalámbricos – como teléfonos inalámbricos y hornos de microondas – que se encuentren cerca del enrutador.

¿Cómo incrementar su alcance?

Explore la línea Trendnet de productos para incrementar el alcance: La línea Wireless-N ofrece un alcance mayor y es más rápido que la tecnología inalámbrica estándar. Le brinda hasta cuatro veces el alcance ofreciéndole mayor flexibilidad para trabajar y jugar prácticamente en cualquier lugar de su casa o en sus alrededores: escaleras arriba, escaleras abajo o en el patio trasero junto a la piscina.

11. Utilice el adaptador adecuado para obtener el mejor desempeño de la red.

Para actualizar una computadora de escritorio piense en adquirir el adaptador USB Wireless-N de Trendnet, el cual se conecta fácilmente al puerto USB y no requiere abrir la caja de la computadora. Para laptops, utilice el adaptador para laptops Wireless-N de Trendnet. Simplemente inserte el adaptador para laptop en la ranura de tarjeta PC y estará habilitado.

Nachdem ich meinen Arbeitsplatz-Switch vergangene Woche für den Videoüberwachungsserver nebenan opfern musste, habe ich gestern den neuen DLink DGS-1008D bekommen. In Weiss. Gefällt mir nicht. Sieht doof aus. Aber das ist Green-IT, so ist das heutzutage eben.

Eigentlich hab ich ja nun einen grünen Switch. Obwohl er weiß ist. Aber es ist tatsächlich ein Green-Ethernet-Switch.

Is schon ein bisschen verrückt. Der Switch erkennt die Kabellänge und passt die Stromstärke dementsprechend an. Hm. Aha. Oha. Na sowas.
Heißt das nun also, dass ich weniger Strom verbrate, wenn ich kürzere Ethernet-Kabel einsetze? Muss ich mir jetzt Gedanken machen, wenn ich gerade kein kurzes Kabel zur Hand habe und statt dessen ein längeres benutze?

Also hab ich jetzt einen Öko-Ethernet-Anschluss hier im Büro. Schon cool sowas.

Doch, auf dem Hochglanzpappkarton sind etliche Öko-Logos, oder was man dafür halten könnte, wie den Grünen Punkt ( ) oder “Printed with Soy Ink” – Sojatinte. Natürlich darf der “Energy Star” nicht fehlen oder Hinweis auf die Einhaltung von RoHS.

Und jetzt entsorgen wir noch eben die Verpackung von dem Teil.  Den dicken massiven Hochglanz-Pappkarton, eine dicken Eierschachtelpappe innen drin, die Folie aussenrum, die schicke blaue Plastiktüte um den Switch, die Drahtplastikklammer um das Netzteil, das kleine Plastiktütchen mit den Metallschrauben und Plastikdübeln und den Plastiksteckverbindern und nicht zu vergessen natürlich noch den dicken Packen aus Hochglanzpappe, in dem sich zwei dicke Installations- und Garantieinformationen in allen Sprachen befinden, sowie eine Konformitätserklärung und dazu noch eine CD in einer Papierhülle, auf der sich die Handbücher befinden.
Sehr umweltschonend also.

Wozu überhaupt Handbücher, noch dazu auf CD? Für einen Switch?
Also ich hab das Teil ausgepackt, den Strom angestöpselt, meine Ethernet-Kabel eingestöpselt und das wars. Funktioniert einwandfrei. Ohne drüber nachzudenken….

Sei que fiquei um bom tempo sem escrever nada. Não tenho justicativas sublimes pra isso. Quero me dedicar hoje à Brasil Telecom/OI, que participou ativamente do meu fim de semana bem como dos dias que o antecederam.

Como alguns de vocês sabem, eu sou cliente da merda da Brasil Telecom há muito tempo, talvez por comodismo, talvez por medo de acabar cancelando e ter que pagar alguma taxa-castigo pro resto da vida. O fato é que comecei com uma internet singlea há alguns anos atrás, e de lá pra cá não evoluí muito. Esses dias eu estava navegando no site da OI (BR Telecom) quando notei que o preço que eu pagava (até então) na minha banda-larga de 800kbps correspondia à de 2MB. Intrigado, liguei pra merda da empresa e fui atendido uns 15 minutos depois. A mocinha, muito de saco cheio, disse que os preçinhos tinham mudado fazia um tempo, e eu perguntei porque cargas d´água não avisam ao consumidor que ele pode pagar menos e ter mais; ela disse que pra isso eu teria que ter plano de fidelização, blábláblá. Acontece que eu JÀ tinha a tal fidelização pra pagar OITENTA reais por 800kbps, e no site eles ofereciam à SESSENTA reais uma net de 2MB. No ato pedi pra ela transferir a net, sei lá o procedimento, e cadastrar a tal super fidelização por 12 meses. Ela disse que em cinco dias estaria disponível. E nesse ponto foi bem mais rápido. Ótimo. Isso foi na segunda ou terça-feira.

Bom, eu não tenho o costume de passar a madrugada na internet, mas é gritante a diferença na conexão quando passa das 23:00. Os downloads vão à 200kbps sempre, as páginas abrem rápido e o youtube é maravilhoso. Liguei na simpática empresa perguntando por que diabos só à noite consigo usufruir do que contratei. A resposta é aquela velha ladainha, primeiro eles dizem que o modem não é compativel, depois dizem que sua linha (fisicamente falando) deve ter defeito, depois falam que vão dar um jeito. Aham. Na realidade a empresa simplesmente bloqueia o tráfego de dados e o libera à noite. Isso não deveria ser feito porque o contrato é pra uma conexão na velocidade “x” 24 horas por dia. Grande idiotice. Um dos atendentes falou que talvez melhorasse se eu atualizasse o modem. Outro triste acontecimento na semana.

Desolado e inquieto, comecei a fuçar nos foruns da vida que o google me traz e vi que o meu modem não é maravilhoso nem terrível. Ele fica no limbo dos modens, e que existiria uma suposta atualização pro coitado no site da Dlink. Só pra constar, é o 2640b, com roteador wireless inclusive, que com tanto gosto configurei sozinho. Bom, confesso que fiz algo sem pensar muito, olhei o site, vi que o nome do modem batia e que havia um software novo (firmware) disponível. Baixei. Mas fui descobrir mais tarde que se trata do firm pro modelo 2640T e nao 2640B, apesar da foto estar errada, e o link também; essa diferença só é visível se você tiver a perspicácia de ir no site americano da porra da D-link (que por sua vez tem um 0800 que não funciona e um 011 que, pelo jeito, funciona até _as 20:00 quando o horário de atendimento, no site, está colocado até às 21:00).

Bom, como descobri a cagada? Na aula de sábado, com o meu querido note. Depois paguei prum tecnico me falar oque eu já sabia. Melhor comprar outro modem. Ou seja, na ânsia de conseguir tirar maior proveito doque à OI/Brasil Telecom não me oeferece, joguei no lixo R$200,00 num modem novo. Que fique de lição pra vocês, internautas assíduos e pseudo-nerds que pensam manjar de tudo um pouco. Me descuidem e por uma LETRA do modelo fiz uma grande burrada.

Agora fica a questão; por que a OI nao libera o sinal 24 horas por dia? Pir que fica rapido justamente quando estou dormidno?Por que ainda nao entrei com uma acao na justiça? Essa ultima pergunta eu respondo; estou fazendo relatorios gráficos no trafego de dados das 22:30 às 23:05 mais ou menos, pra provar como dispara a banda depois desse horário. Espero que a Anatel tome alguma atitude também.

I have a mediacenter with the brilliant EyeTV sitting in the center which accumulates a lot of video. We are also collecting quite a lot of HD video material shot with our Sony HD camera. At this moment, all the content is stored at the hard disk of my iMac and space is running out. So, I thought it was time to start looking for a centralized solution for storing and sharing the multi-media content in our house.

My wish list:

1. Sharing of music, video and photo across devices simultaneously
2. Possibility to backup both Mac and Windows systems automatically
3. Possibility to add more hard disk memory later in the future

I was thinking about an Apple Time Capsule or another dedicated NAS system. The Time Capsule is basically a wireless router and hard disk combined in one box. The great thing about it is the ease of use and the possibility to make backups of your laptop and other machines attached to the network using Apple’s Time Machine backup system. The drawbacks are that you cannot change the hard disk setup yourself so you’re limited to the 1 or 2 TB version you buy. And that content is piling up in the meantime… Furthermore, it doesn’t work as an iTunes server, which means you cannot play music on different devices simultaneously. And this is what killed this option for me. I want to be able to attach a SONOS system to my collection of music in the near future.

After doing some research I decided to go for a Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ 4TB (thanks @owisscha!) This machine does all the stuff I want to as described above. It also works with Mac and Windows based computers at the same time. And, very nice, it is also Time Machine compatible.

One thing it led to is the need for a new wireless router. Currently I have a 5-year old Linksys WRT54G running the old 802.11g standard. I recently noticed that it choked now and then when used heavily by multiple clients. The newest routers pack the new 802.11n standard  which is way faster. This comes in handy when transmitting HD video, for example. What to look for in a wireless router? Check out this article. Basically what I need is 802.11n, simultaneous dual-band, and ample 1GB ethernet ports for the different devices (modem, NAS, VOIP phone, PC and a future game machine). I went for the D-Link DIR-825.

Looking forward to the delivery of the goodies and will let you know how it works out.

I ragazzi di Routertech hanno fatto uscire un nuovo firmware “a tradimento”: la versione 2.91.1.

Fra le novità uno script che deframmenta la env automaticamente una volta superata una certa soglia: questo dovrebbe risolvere o limitare i numerosi problemi causati dalla frequente deframmentazione della env nei bootloader ADAM2 soprattutto.

Qui potete trovare il pacchetto pronto per eseguire l’update su router Dlink dsl-g604T/624T.

Da un pò di giorni è uscito la versione 2.91 del firmware Routertech.

Fra i vari aggiornamenti anche la possibilità di scegliere, tramite la scheda “RT Configurations”, quale driver dsp caricare: io ho scelto il dsp75A e va perfettamente.

As you know everything these days is wireless. But, rarely do we care how we connect, instead often just get online. A lot of wireless routers that are available offer very useful features that you probably didn’t know about. Chances are if you’ve never accessed your router’s settings, you are just running the defaults which means your neighbors or anyone who drives by could potentially access your data or perform a criminal act that points to you. However, there are times when it’s OK to take the shields down and let people leech off your network. For that reason, you may want to periodically check who is accessing it. In most routers, they have a status page to display connected computers.

To learn how to secure a wireless router there are three important things to know: SSID (Service set identification), MAC (Media Access Control) Address, and WEP(Wired Equivalent Privacy) / WPA (Wifi Protected Access), don’t worry I will not bug on this tech terms. Let me explain it in 5 simple steps..

Step 1) Access Your Wireless Router’s Configuration: log in to your wireless router administrative control panel. This is usually done by opening a browser and going to http://192.168.1.1 (for most Linksys routers) or http://192.168.0.1 (for most D-Link routers). Check the user manual or quick-start guide that came with your router if either of those do not work. (Once there change the Admin password. Most wireless routers ship with a blank password. It is essential that this is changed else a potential hacker could get into your router configuration and lock you out of your own hardware. Many Linksys wireless routers, use the word “admin” as the default password. Either way, you should change this to something only you know and never give this out to anyone.)

Step 2) Change the SSID name: The SSID is your Network Name. That is, it’s how other computers know what to look for when connecting to your wireless network. Linksys wireless routers use “linksys” as their default name. D-Link uses, get ready, “dlink” as their default. Changing this to a unique name, but not something related to a personal password or anything personally identifiable. My tip i have seen wireless networks named things like, “computer-virus” and they like to scare people off.

Step 3) Disable/Turn-off SSID broadcast: By default, almost all wireless routers broadcast the SSID name you setup above. This means that anyone within range of your router (neighbors, random strangers driving by, criminals, etc.) can find out the name of your network and thus try to connect to it. Make it a bit harder by disabling this broadcast feature. Combined with the unique name above, these two steps will certainly ward off the casual wi-fi poachers.

Step 4) Enable WPA or WPA2 encryption: This is switched off by default. There is a choice of WEP, WPA and WPA2. Currently the latest encryption method is WPA2 so use this where possible. Both your wireless router and wireless PC adaptor must be configured to use the same encryption, it is the most effective and most important part of securing your wi-fi network as well as the information you send across it.

The benefits here are 2-fold:

1) It makes access to your wireless network password-protected.
2) It encrypts all the data you send while browsing the internet (credit card numbers, email passwords, etc.).

You’ll want to use WPA2 if your wireless router gives you that option and your computer supports it. If it does not, go with WPA. Do not even bother with WEP encryption, as this has been proven to be hackable in minutes and really only offers a false sense of security. You will be required to enter a password, or “shared key,” when setting this up. For this, you’ll want to pick a long string of both capital and lowercase letters as well as numbers. Stick with a string of ten characters or more to be safe, although some security experts suggest going with something over twenty characters. Keep in mind that you might have to give this out to trusted visitors and weekend guests, so don’t make this the same as any other password you use.

Step 5) (Optional) MAC address filtering: As said this is more optional which works well on most branded routers. All hardware has a unique MAC address associated with it, including your PC adaptor card. This MAC address can be added to access control list in the wireless router. Only devices added to the router’s access control list are allowed to be connected. Why did I make it optional simple with MAC address filtering, you can tell your wireless network to only allow access from certain computers by inputting their MAC address into the router settings. However, from a hacker’s point of view, what this does is give them a list of MAC addresses that can access the network and gives them one more piece of information to help them snoop around on your network. Also other good tip with this is to Disable web access to the Control Panel. The fact is, once you set up all this stuff you rarely have to access the Control Panel anyway, so this just makes it all the more secure.

Final get some help out of your router manufacturer like update your router latest router firmware from the manufacturer’s website and installed in the router. This will hopefully fix any bugs that have been found for your router and also help with any known security flaws in the router itself., finally backup all router settings. If you reset the router back to its factory default settings even by mistake, your configuration can later be easily restored back with this.

Tip: The major wireless router manufacturers are Linksys/Cisco, D-Link, and Netgear. You will see these brands dominate in most retail stores. I finished upgrading my Dlink DNS-323 to Debian Lenny today. I followed the instruction at:

The install took quite a while, I selected the standard package list. Then because it gets quit hot here in Griffith I really wanted to have fan control back, so instruction here were also followed.

As I wanted to install to an 8GB Flash drive I had handy I first uploaded the netboot.img firmware, turned off the DNS-323, removed the hard drives and left only the flash drive inserted, then powered up and followed the installation instructions.

I like keeping root on the flash drive as the hard drives can be stopped all day when not in use to save temp and power.

Fans are also controlled by lm-sensors and the unit seems to run about 47degC most of the day.

I use the unit mostly for irc (screen/weechat), rsync backup target and samba media server. It handles all that pretty well but I do notice it bog a fair bit with only 64mb ram and hard drive transfer rates are not as good as I am used to, but on the whole a great little unit (now that it runs debian).

Recently I’ve got a chance to play around NAS (Network Attached Storage) from Dlink called DNS323.

The initial setup was relatively easy since the accompanied CD shows wizard on what are the things need to be done.

So, if you don’t want a burden of buying and maintaining servers just to serve data storage purpose, this little box could be your best friend. Some people might argue that servers are more robust, multi purpose, expandable, more configurable and sounds sexy but at the same time, it needs IT specialists, expensive and take up more spaces. I came across servers that is being neglected to the point of being burden to its owner especially to SME entity that normally doesn’t have IT guys. The choice is yours.

Estou com esse roteador agora no trabalho e já posso postar minhas impressões sobre ele em mais um review. O modelo é bem pequeno e aparenta ser bem robusto. Achei a antena um pouco pequena, de forma que o alcance não é muito grande, bem menor do que o fabricante alega. Ele suporta velocidades de até 108Mbps (802.11 g/b), apesar de só passar dos 54Mbps com equipamentos compatíveis da D-Link.

A interface de configuração é um pouco poluída visualmente, mas é rica em opções. Esse roteador conta com diversos ajustes de desempenho possíveis e tem bons recursos. É possível redirecionar portas para servidores na rede interna, como em todo roteador. O interessante é que é possível estipular horários para essa abertura de portas, garantindo um maior controle do acesso. Ele também conta com sistema de controle parental, para bloquear conteúdos impróprios. Os recursos de firewall entre outros apetrechos de segurança também são fáceis de configurar. Basta acessar pelo endereço http://192.168.0.1 para obter a interface do roteador. Ao contrário de outro modelos, ele exige poucas interrupções na conexão para configurar tudo e reinicia bem rápido.

A conexão do wireless demora mais do que eu gostaria para autenticar o usuário, sendo que eventualmente é preciso tentar uma segunda vez para conectar na rede sem fio. Outra crítica é quanto à configuração rápida, que só oferece a encriptação WEP. Para usar WPA2, é preciso configurar separadamente essa forma de segurança no menu LAN. No geral, achei bem fácil de configurar, apesar de estar tudo em inglês (para mim não é problema, mas pode gerar dúvidas). Foi fácil colocar tudo para funcionar sem encrencas, montando rapidamente uma rede para o escritório.

Apesar disso tudo, existem diversas pessoas que declaram que esse roteador deixa a conexão cair constantemente, o que é um problema sério. Pessoalmente, não sou muito chegado na D-Link. Ainda não ocorreram problemas por aqui, mas essas declarações me garantem algumas ressalvas quanto ao produto. É fácil ver na internet pessoas reclamando sobre quedas de conexão e reínicios repentinos desse roteador.

Apesar de ter bons recursos, estabilidade é fundamental. Com isso, não vejo como poderia recomendar esse modelo nesse review. Minha opinião final é: fiquem longe desse roteador. Existem modelos muito melhores pelo mesmo preço, como o Pacific PN-WR542G, que apesar de não ter tantos recursos, é muito estável e não dá problemas.

Most of us have a brief idea about how to connect a modem to a computer.The connections that involve with in a modem are very simple and router connection appears to be complicated but its simple too.The connections in a modem are as follows

1.At the back of the modem there will be four ports Dsl,Usb,Ethernet,Power port . Ethernet is the port from where a wire should be hooked up to the computer,in case if we decide to use a usb we can avoid ethernet cable instead of which the usb cable plays the role of the ethernet cable

Power port is the one where the power chord should be connected.The dsl port is the one where the wire from the splitter / filter (or) from the wall jack will be connected ,we can easily distinguish between a ethernet wire and dsl wire from the thickness.Ethernet cable will be a little bit thicker than the dsl cable and the port size of ethernet will be bigger than that of dsl.
