Today I was asked to reverse engineer a 12 year old dll from one of our company’s product, for which an iphone app is being developed as well as a web version. Unfortunately the source of the dll was lost and the dll is packed with an annoying bug in it. The iphone developers are directly importing the dll and using it, as the source is not available. The programmer whosoever coded the dll inserted a check, where a command prompt opens up for the user  to press enter. I wonder why he has done that. Leaving that aside I was asked to look at the assembly, find the piece of code with this bug and then make a simple  jump. An alternative method has already been implemented using a robot which does the entry instead of the user when the program enters this state. But this results in an  annoying  command prompt popping up and then  fading. After a long time had some interesting stuff to do at the workplace. Got to taste IDA Pro .

To understand how these registry cleaners work, you must first understand the role of the Windows Registry. As the name suggests, the registry is a massive centralised database which stores program settings, links to crucial DLL files and resources which allow your system to run.

To create a DLL file called MathUtilities.DLL with two classes named Add.cs and Multiply.cs,

1. Compile the two classes with C# compiler.

Option /target:library specifies the compiler to output a DLL instead of an EXE file.

Option /out specifies the compiler the DLL name (in this case it is MathUtilities.DLL) followed by the class file names.

2. To reference MathUtilities.DLL in an application called SampleApplication.EXE,

CSC /out:SampleApplication.EXE /reference:MathUtilities.DLL SampleApplication.cs
Option /reference specifies the compiler to include the DLL’s or files used by the application.

First to say, I’m aware that dll purpose or libraries in general was/is to modularize programming, so you could move some, somewhat connected, stuff into one place and reuse the code in another projects/replacing just this bit without recompiling the main program, so the idea of embedding dll as a part of exe file itself seems ridiculous, but… yes… there’s but.

The case

What if you have to make sure you will be using some certain function, and that function is located in external library, for which you don’t have or simply don’t want to incorporate sources into your main program. Yes, then your option is either have such dll in resource or `sticked` to the end of your app (not recommended) extract, load, execute and delete after you’re done with it. Messy, isn’t it? First, you can’t be sure if OS will let you use hard drive for storing purposes on every machine, it may be ok in your pc, but that’s not the case in general.

The solution

I stumbled upon one handy library that allows you to load dll stored in memory as binary data, and what else delphi resources are as if not exactly such case?

The library BTMemoryModule is 4 years old already, so I’m not sure if it’ll work on newer compilers/OSes, but it still works for me. On the other hand, I’m still using delphi 9 so I’m not the one to judge
It’s always good idea to check if there’s any updated version…

In one of my recent assignments I was asked to investigate how the SMTP vuser type behaves in LoadRunner. The need was to send alot of EMail messages to a SMTP server, and specifically the CC and BCC fields where important.

As it turns out the SMTP implementation in LoadRunner (v8.1 and v9.5x) does not quite follow the standard when it comes to the CC and BCC headers.To actually test the SMTP script I first had to get myself a SMTP Dummy server (so I could send something somewhere) and after evaluating several free ones, I decided to write my own. The main reason was that now I had control over the server end too making debugging much easier.

So to test the SMTP Client implementation I took the code from the LR help file and modified it slightly to suit my needs.

Now from the raw log I can clearly see that all the recipients email addresses are sent using the RCPT TO command, but the actual mail-headers do not contain the TO, CC or BCC headers as expected. This will in effect render the built-in SMTP implementation totally useless for any serious testing of a mail server.

The only way I could get the headers to appear in the email-headers was to manually add them in the MAILOPTIONS part, thus making my code more complicated.

The other solution I came up with was to create a SMTPClient.DLL extension, that implements the SMTP protocol correctly, and also gives me the possibility to test SSL or TLS authenticated servers, but that is another story that I might blog about in the future…

Ok, I want to put something in here about dlls because they have caused me some frustration in the past. If you are in the business of software dev, I am guessing they have done the same to you. I am going to use this post as a living document that I continually document as I discover more about dlls.

A dll (Dynamic-link library) can be very useful because they allow you to access methods that someone else has made and packaged up for you.

DLL Tips:

• When accessing a dll from your application, make sure that the dll ends up in the output directory with your executable in some way or another. In visual studio you can accomplish this by right clicking your project in the Solution Explorer, –>Add Existing Item –> Find the dll and click Add. In the properties window, you will find that all files have a property ‘Copy to Output Directory’, set this to ‘Copy Always’ and you should be good to go.
• If your application is only going to be used on your computer you can just place the dll in your C:\Windows\System32 folder.
• dlls are compiled for x84 or x64 architectures. If you are using an x86 dll then your application will throw an exception if you attempt you build it for an x64 arch.
• I haven’t tried this yet but I have been told – If you have multiple dlls that you are referencing in one project, you can bundle the dlls into one file using a Microsoft utility called ILMerge. Note: it looks like ILMerge can only be used on .Net assemblies.
