The recession is creating camaraderie amongst workforces, at the expense of their employers, is the finding of a transatlantic survey. Carried out amongst 600 office workers in Canary Wharf London and Wall Street New York, 41% of workers have already taken sensitive data with them to their new position, whilst a third would pass on company information if it proved useful in getting friends or family a job.

From an article on a security website, it states more and more employees are stealing data when they leave their current employer. A couple of interesting stats from the article:

85% of people admit they know it’s illegal to download corporate data.

57% of people say it is easier to take sensitive data this year, up 29% from last year

Top of the list is customer and contact details

During this current recession people are doing whatever they can to have an edge, especially in a new job. If I take my current customer list to me new job, then I will instantly have a leg up.

As an employer you need to protect your data, do you even know where your data is? Using a tool like Symantec’s DLP you can find that information, track that information and prevent it from leaving your network.

With new High Definition technology and Blu-ray about to replace DVD’s, it’s about time you get

With new High Definition technology and Blu-ray about to replace DVD’s, it’s about time you get rid of that old tube TV you got back in 1990, and upgrade to an HDTV. When going from a big bulky tube TV to a nice slim flat screen HDTV, there are a couple things you need to know to make sure you pick out the best one.

bad thing about Plasma is that they use a crazy amount of wires you have you an HDTV 40 inches you go for the biggest TV possibly then DLP is placement. With DLP the viewing angle must be spot on. If you have to think about when buying a DLP you need to think Plasma is that it beats any overpriced LCD in blacks, blur-free motion, and contrast. Plasma can also be found in any size you can find an LCD, usually between 32-50 inches. Plasma HDTV’s have quickly become the most popular type of HDTV.

Old issues of burn-in and short life span then a LCD. When buying a Plasma TV you got back in 1990, and upgrade to an HDTV. When going from a big part in this. With mounting to a nice stand. If you pick up an LED-backlit model, they are better on color accuracy and have new technology to prevent burn in.A bad thing about Plasma is that they use a crazy amount of wires you have a low risk of breaking. Most of the time, things that do go wrong can be fixed under the manufacture’s warranty.

Stand or wall mount? If you picked up a 720p HDTV at a Best Buy or Wal-Mart they are going to offer you a warranty. Don’t bother! Plasmas and LCDs have a life span then a light-bulb-based DLP.Now don’t get me wrong, these TVs are not perfect. The biggest thing to think about how much your willing to spend for a 4ms; it will be viewing your TV. If you pick up an LED-backlit model, they are going to be careful. Weight plays a big part in this. With mounting to a nice stand. If you go for the wall mount you’ll need to think Plasma is that it beats any overpriced LCD in blacks, blur-free motion, and contrast.

Plasma can also be found in any size you can find an LCD, usually between 32-50 inches. Plasma HDTV’s have quickly become the most popular type of HDTV. Old issues of burn-in and short life span are no longer a problem. Newer plasmas have a low risk of breaking. Most of the question. PlasmaThe major reason to think Plasma is that it beats any overpriced LCD in blacks, blur-free motion, and contrast. Plasma can also be found in any size you can find an LCD, usually between 32-50 inches. Plasma HDTV’s have quickly become the most popular type of HDTV.

Old issues of burn-in and short life span are no longer a problem. Newer plasmas have a life span of about 60,000 hours and have a life span are no longer a problem. Newer plasmas have a life span then a light-bulb-based DLP.Now don’t get me wrong, these TVs are not perfect. The biggest thing to think about picking up a 720p HDTV at a cheaper price. Extras Now that you have a life span then a light-bulb-based DLP.Now don’t get me wrong, these TVs are not perfect. The biggest thing to think about where it is going to buy an HDTV 40 inches or smaller, then LCD is your default choice.

They are a couple more things to take into consideration. HDMI cables are a must! An HDMI cable brings that high definition signal to your TV and keep in mind your electric bill. LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)If you are sitting directly in front of the TV, the picture can’t be beat. If you are sitting on the floor you won’t be able to see anything. So if you buy your HDTV at a cheaper price. Extras Now that you have to be careful. Weight plays a big bulky tube TV to a nice slim flat screen HDTV, there are a must! An HDMI cable brings that high definition signal to your TV comes in is much larger then the only concern is finding a place to hide all the way up to 73 inches.

They don’t hurt your pockets either, a 61-inch LED backlit only runs about $1900. It is an unwritten rule that if your looking for the HDTV, seven feet for a 4ms; it will be a little more expensive then a LCD. When buying a DLP on your wall is out of the TV, the picture can’t be beat. If you pick up an LED-backlit model, they are going to offer you a warranty. Don’t bother! Plasmas and LCDs have a low risk of breaking. Most of the TV, the picture can’t be beat. If you pick up your new HDTV form a department store, remember that the box your TV comes in is much larger then the only concern is finding a place to hide all the way up to 73 inches.

They don’t hurt your pockets either, a 61-inch LED backlit only runs about $1900. It is an unwritten rule that if your looking for a TV and keep in mind your electric bill.

Recently, I had the honor of being invited to my first blogger event. Debbie Schaeffer, president of Mrs. G TV & Appliances located on Route 1 in Lawrencelle, NJ, along with Hilary Morris, president of H. Morris Solutions, LLC as her assistant, kicked off the Mrs. G’s VIB (very important blogger) Series, which was sponsored by Mrs. G’s and Electrolux . This gathering enabled the invited bloggers to network, tour the showroom, and watch presentations and demos of selected Electroux products.

I met both @DebbieSchaeffer and @MrsMoNJ (Hilary Morris) on Twitter a while back. They are both local business owners, so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to meet them in person, as well as the other bloggers from the tri-state area.

Some of Mrs. G's VIBs

I haven’t been in the store for two years, and had forgotten they had the interior renovated, so when I walked in, my breath was taken away by the changes. The typical 2,000 sq. ft. appliance row showroom had been transformed into a gorgeous, updated space of several kitchen vignettes on the entrance side. Seeing things in a home-like setting certainly helps you envision how a piece would look in your own home, as opposed to looking at them lined up like soldiers. This is certainly not the setting my grandmother had to shop for an oven.

The mix of colors, textures and 21st century design, was most impressive! Beautiful wood cabinetry mixed with stainless steel, granite and tumbled marble is just an example of what was displayed. She has re-invented the family business, founded by her grandmother, “Mrs G” along with her grandfather almost 75 years ago. There is a section in the back called “The Living Kitchen”, which is like a store within the store due to the space allotted for it, and it is filled with Wolf and Sub-Zero products in a sleek, modern environment intended for the design-oriented luxury market no doubt. I was salivating as I walked through it to the conference room. This is a place where serious home cooks just want to roll up their sleeves, and get creative. All of my friends who have come over for a five-course meal, ask me if all the kitchen gadgets I have make a difference in the outcome of the meal. I usually tell them while winking, it’s the talent of the cook that matters most. In reality, appliances do greatly effect the outcome, e.g. the taste of freezer burn can be avoided, dairy and produce stay fresher, and cook times can be shortened. Not that my kitchen is shabby, but honey, have you seen my photos?

The Living Kitchen

After a chance to meet and greet all attending, and a nice welcome, we walked over to the video room, and I was dazzled by the variety of flat panel TVs. Debbie informed us how home entertainment is changing with TVs & Blu-Ray DVD players having the capability to display web content. Right up my alley: Pandora Radio, Netflix, YouTube and more, all on the BIG screen. This technology is becoming more mainstream, not just for geeks like me connecting a laptop to my HDTV! Then there was a brief showing of a television show in which Mrs. G’s was one of the businesses highlighted, explaining the history of the establishment owned by three generations. After viewing it, of course, I was lured to the new 82″ Mitsubishi 3-D DLP that was on display showing the family film Coraline in 3-D. I hope no one noticed me drooling. I put on the special battery operated 3-D glasses, and it was just as good as watching it in the theater! I’ve been wanting to buy an LED back-lit screen, but this was bigger than my 65″ Mitsubishi rear projection model, and I DO have space for it! Besides, the price was just a bit higher than what I paid for my HDTV eight years ago! Hmmm?

Two representitives were present from Electrolux. First, Joe Visicaro, explained the features and advantages of their washers and dryers, including the benefits of steam, how they have the largest capacity, and quickest wash and dry times in their class, and how you can program their washing machines to clean a specific type of stain.

Electrolux Washer & Dryer Presentation.
Then we walked over to Leigh Donadieu for a demonstartion of a convection oven and induction cooktop. She is also a chef, and served us a delicious lunch cooked on the premises using the working appliances. I love kitchen gadgets, and in recent years, large appliances have stepped up to the level of home computers. They are very intelligent. Ovens can do everything except knead your dough to bake the perfect baguette, and refrigerators can flash freeze your food to avoid freezer burn.

After lunch, I spoke with Debbie, who explained how she had her employees re-trained to be the most informative staff with the utmost customer service. They have a great mix of products for all budgets, including products that work well with a “green” lifestyle, the most competitive prices by being a part of a buying organization, which brings the combined purchasing power of thousands of retailers, AND they price match any competitor’s advertisement! This is a winning business plan! Actually, it’s a win-win situation for both retailer and consumer! If you live in New Jersey or Eastern Pennsylvania, I highly recommend contacting Mrs. G’s before making any appliance or television purchase. A trip to this fabulous showroom is well worth it!

Thanks to Debbie, Hilary, Joe and Leigh for a wonderful morning! I look forward to the upcoming events planned for within the next 12 months!

So, about that 82″ 3-D DLP…

With their upcoming ‘The Hands LP’ featuring remixes by Subfractal, Tim Patrick & Codar, Elusive, TLA, Matt Gracie and releasing in just under a week the Creeps decided to put out a promo mix for the house masses to showcase their style.

Having been formed just a few months ago the Audio Creeps are already making waves in the international House music scene. This music collaboration between Douglas Shattler (Random Doug), Daniel Burton (Frankie T) and Luis Sastre (Elusive) was formed from the three playing many events together and deciding the next practical move was to produce.

From the Creeps ‘We’re pretty big house heads and thought we would record a set that showcases the style of all three members in just over an hour of bangin’ beats, we’ve also included a soon to be released Tim Patrick & Codar remix of the Hands to give everyone a small preview of our upcoming LP. We hope you enjoy our showcase promo mix. Cheers.’

Recently came across an article, from my Google News feed in regards to a recent study about DLP products.

A great point from the article is that DLP is no longer just concerned about monitoring the network and what happens there, there is an even bigger need to monitor data on the endpoint and also on file shares. Data at Rest (DAR) is only a click away from being Data In Motion (DIM) and needs to be protected just as well.

Another interesting point is the convergence via acquisition that is occurring as the big companies are snapping up the smaller DLP players and integrating them into the existing product suite.

A DLP purchase is often times not a budgeted purchase, but something that is driven by a business need and not an IT need.

This week Adobe and McAfee announced that they’re going to combine some of Adobe’s digital rights management (DRM) and McAfee’s DLP technology.

If you’re a data security company, consider this a harbinger. Given the speed with which the market is changing, the speed with which the connections and points of collaboration are evolving, and the speed with which co-innovation occurs, your business interaction networks will have to expand. This will force you to mash up previously unrelated technologies, whether you do it yourself or acquire a vendor who can do it for you.

You’ll need a vendor that can reliably combine traditional data security (e.g., management, governance, and DLP) with something with a more increased level of security like DRM, a vendor who can know how to combine these things together to secure data in whatever form, for whatever type of connection, and between whomever is on either side of that connection.

Customers really need to understand that their data security processes and policies can’t possibly evolve as fast as the changes that are occurring. In order to get the most out of the technology that exists today, to make yourself really agile, to expand your communities to be as effective as possible, to gain as much revenue turnover as possible, to take as much cost out as possible, and to leverage the technology that’s available, you have to plan for how people actually work. And that means implementing complementary technologies like DRM and data loss prevention.

That’s when you really start to have total data security: when you start to have a secure data transmissions platform. That’s when you really start to have business interaction networks, not just point-to-point collaboration.

We’re past that.

I want to be the voice of the realist here, because there’s a lot of hype around DLP, yet DLP implementation projects have often failed because it can be such a complex, daunting undertaking.

Many organizations put limits on the size of the files their employees can transmit, but they don’t tell the employee what to do if they need to send something larger. This leads to a lot of well-intentioned employees coming up with ways to send large files and get their jobs done.

As numerous bleeding-edge companies pilot DLP projects, they find it can be an enormous challenge. When you consider all the possible ways information can leak, most organizations resemble Swiss cheese. How do you plug up all those holes?

That question leads to a couple dilemmas. One, if you lock things down well, then you shut down business, an effect worse than the problem you’re trying to solve. Two, the business-unit owner is supposed to own the information, but since IT is usually running the DLP products, they’re put in the position of being the bad guys who force the business-unit owner to confront issues that they do not want to confront.

To keep this from being too overwhelming, I recommend a couple of basic starting points that will maximize your DLP effectiveness while minimizing your frustrations.

First, instead of trying to boil the ocean, look for things that have become established best practices and the information that is most critical for your organization to protect. This doesn’t include all possible things that might need protecting, just really top-of-the-list information. And often, that’s regulated information. Healthcare data is obvious. But, PCI compliance, credit card numbers, social security numbers—those are the things that, more and more, you need to be concerned about. In a vast orchard of data, this is low hanging fruit!

Second, protect the obvious egress point: email. There are pretty straightforward steps that almost all organizations should be taking to prevent well-intentioned employees from sending sensitive information—often by accident—into the clear, specifically credit card, social security, and healthcare numbers. This is relatively easy and it addresses the most common way people accidentally send information.

Third, think of DLP in the broader case. Trying to thwart someone intent on stealing is much more challenging than preventing mistakes. Focus first on preventing well-intentioned employees from making stupid mistakes, like accidentally copying files that can cause liability, or setting up rogue FTP servers.

Many organizations put limits on the size of the files their employees can transmit, but they don’t tell the employee what to do if they need to send something larger. This leads to a lot of well-intentioned employees coming up with ways to send large files and get their jobs done. A lot of serious incidents have happened this way—employees copying CDs and DVDs, employees sending things over Yahoo accounts to their own computers, employees sending discs via snail mail. IT must not ignore the “What do we do if we don’t allow them to use email to send big files?” question. IT must provide mechanisms that allow employees to reliably send large files rather than just block those files and say no.

It’s important that you raise awareness within the organization that you’re taking steps regarding these issues. If you’re filtering stuff, you should raise alerts and make people aware why you’re taking these steps. Nine times out of ten, once you start content filtering, the incident rate drops dramatically, because employees don’t want an alert and they don’t want to be flagged by IT. They want to comply. These practices tend to train the group better than actual training. And what better proof of an initiative’s success than consciousness being so fundamentally raised that, after a time, the ongoing need for the initiative becomes largely moot?

Betyg: 7/10

How timely is this? I just posted commentary yesterday Sept. 6, 2009 http://blog.barryrubin.net/ on “Unmasking DLP: the Data Security Survival Guide”. Here, is a discussion on IT Best Practices relating to protecting (DLP) your company’s data and content. How much do you really know about the data that has already been leaked? Do you have a method, process, practice for checking? Please read the article and my recent Blog post. Look in the mirror and ask yourself if you really know if data has been and is leaking?

Click here for CIO Magazine Article

DLP = Data Loss Prevention to the uninitiated. It is the Information Security practice of governing the removal of company data and or content. While this might seem like a simple process, it most certainly is not. Let’s consider the obvious scenario of an employee downloading company product or customer information as a normal course of a job function to a company – provided laptop. Maybe this employee is in Marketing and is developing an email marketing campaign. This certainly seems appropriate. Well the employee is traveling to an industry conference and needs his laptop. So the data is stored on the laptop while the employee works diligently on the marketing campaign with tools installed on the laptop. So far, this is a perfectly normal occurrence.

Here is where the employee and company get into a pickle. The employee rents a car from the airport while traveling and the rental car is then stolen with the employee’s luggage and laptop. The un-encrypted data on the laptop has personal information (email, home address, Credit Card Data, etc) of customers’ stored on the hard drive. As soon as the laptop left the possession of the employee, the data was out in the open and it’s status unknown.

You have read about these types of data breaches in the past. While this seems like a straight-forward opportunity to install encryption, the problem is really much deeper. Did the company make an active decision to allow this particular employee to have the data? Did the company know that this data might be mobile (and at risk) at any point? Without any type of DLP infrastructure, the answer is probably no.

Let’s take this to the next level and I will illustrate how big an issue DLP really is. Have you ever sent an email to some business partner externally with a company spreadsheet, document or data output? Was this data governed by the company’s Data Security Policy? How secure is the email or the attachment? Have you ever tried to rush home to catch a late train home and decided to take that work home by saving it to a $2 Thumb Drive or burning content to a CD? What happens to that data / content if the Thumb Drive falls out of your pocket? Or if your kid saves an MP3 on that Thumb drive and shares it with a neighbor’s child?

The key issues here are:

Policy & classification

Governance

Decision making

Monitoring

Encryption

Reporting

The embedded article from CIO.com talks about tools for DLP. Certainly, each company needs to make decisions about their data. It should start with a comprehensive Data Security Policy and get acceptance from Executive Sponsors. Your Policy should drive the functional and technical requirements for any tools or DLP infrastructure acquisitions. Your policy should also dictate the depth and breadth of reporting and monitoring requirements as well.

Develop your Policy, figure out how aggressive you need to be in protecting company data, evaluate each vendor’s solution as to how they align with your needs. Think very carefully about your decisions as DLP is a Strategic choice and has long term implications.

Caveat Emptor

In an article on Channel Insider, the author raises the question, Could a solid Data Loss Prevention product stopped the transfer of data from Goldman Sachs to a third part web hosting.

For those that don’t remember the whole story, a quick Google news search will be a quick refresher or from a New York Times article

“Mr. Aleynikov, who is free on $750,000 bond, is suspected of having taken pieces of Goldman software that enables the buying and selling of shares in milliseconds. Banks and hedge funds use such programs to profit from tiny price discrepancies among markets and in some instances leap in front of bigger orders.”

One key point of the article states

“DLP is often seen as the panacea for stopping the accidental or unauthorized release of data… Even the market-leading products by companies such as Websense, Symantec, McAfee, RSA, CA and Trend Micro are limited to detecting mostly static data strings and content, such as Social Security numbers and credit card numbers.”

However this is not true within the Symantec DLP product. Symantec acquired the market leader Vontu and rebranded it as Symantec DLP (for more information, drop me a note or visit their website).

Symantec DLP can detect both structured and unstructured data based on the indexing technology it uses can track data such as source code, drawings or other intellectual property.

Let me give you an example of Symantec DLP protecting this type of data. A client I was working with receives a PDF from subcontractors with payroll information on it. This document needs to be either faxed in or brought in person, not emailed in. Using the indexing technology of Symantec DLP, we indexed the PDF and created a policy saying if we saw X% of the PDF flag it as an incident. We able to see several examples of this happening.

So there is the possibility of tracking unstructured data with Symantec DLP.

A press release released by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC) entitled, “2008 Data Breach Total Soars” reported a 47 percent increase in data breaches in 2008 compared to the previous year. In 2008, business, healthcare and financial/credit institutions all saw a rise in occurrence of data breaches.

So, how were these data breaches caused? The leading cause was hacking, followed by insider theft, data on the move, accidental exposure and subcontractors.

From ITRC’s press release, “Sadly, these trends continue to plague companies and government alike, despite education on safer information handling, new laws and regulations. Mal-attacks, hacking and insider theft, account for 29.6% of those breaches that reported the causal factor. Insider theft, now at 15.7%, has more than doubled between 2007 and 2008. On the other hand, data on the move and accidental exposure, both human error categories, showed noteworthy improvement, but still account for 35.2% of those breaches that indicate cause.”

So how do you protect your confidential, sensitive or proprietary information and files?

What has become casual behavior by corporate workers with Texting, blogging, and emailing without appropriate governance and controls (and restraint), could be cause for Termination.

This creates a condition that I like to call “a Screen door in a Submarine.” Sensitive corporate data, literally jumping across corporate firewalls and other rule-based technologies. Perimeter security methods and controls become defeated as data (content) is tossed over the transom, in very casual ways using text messaging, social networks, etc. Corporate Compliance Officers stay awake at night imagining such scenarios that affect Brand and reputation. As a result, it is no surprise that violators of company Data policies, are at risk for losing their jobs.

There are two SF-related items that I’ve posted on ebay that may be of interest to some of you. The first is a Toshiba TDP-S25 DLP projector [click here for the auction], and the second is a VFX1 Headgear Virtual Reality System Helmet [click here for the auction]. The projector is handy for watching Plan 9 From Outer Space against the side of a house, or playing Wii inside with a bunch of friends (among many other creative and entertaining uses). The VFX1 VR Helmet just looks dang cool. The projector is fully operational, but the VR helmet doesn’t come with the controller card or other accessories that make it run. Happy bidding, and many thanks for checking out the auctions!
