I have added a new section, Bivvy spots! I hate paying for campsites and although I am getting old and am catching Nigel and Phill up am not yet totally decrepid and in need of B and B’s!

I have started adding some sites that I have used, the accuracy of the sites can not be gauranteed as I may not have used them in a while but hopefully they will give the option o a convienient place to stay.

With the current economic situation, businesses are being forced to do more with less, and many mailers in the industry are looking for new opportunities to save. One option mailers are considering to improve efficiency and increase savings is to combine mailings through copalletizing and comailing. 

Copalletization allows mailers to combine separate bundles on pallets – for example, combining multi-titled magazine packages from individual presorts on pallets with common destinations. Combining multiple Periodical titles that would otherwise be prepared in sacks makes it easier to reach palletization and drop ship volumes, and save 1-3% more on origin postage. 

This is not to be confused with comailing, the combining and presorting of two or more titles into a single inducted job. This process allows mailers to eliminate sacks (expensive for mailers to produce and for the Postal Service™ to process) and reduce costs through more efficient processing. Mail that in the past may have been sacked is moved onto pallets and drop-shipped deeper into the mailstream for lower per-piece rates. This leads to more consistent and timely delivery – and as a bonus, mailpieces arrive in better condition thanks to less USPS^® handling. 

Currently, comailing for Standard Mail^® and Periodicals allows mailers to achieve the finest presort level possible for jobs in those classes, while reducing their Outside-County postage. A Mixed Class comail option is also in the pilot phase: This would increase presort discounts by moving pieces to more finely presorted bundles, decrease the use of sacks, and lead to less bundle breakage and improved drop-ship discounts.

If you’re considering adding comailing to your workflow, first examine the makeup of your mailings to see whether the process will work for you. Also, be sure to determine whether your equipment would support comailing; then consider the addressing restrictions, trim size limitations and your in-home delivery dates. (If your operation mails several non-static pieces – as news publications with several last-minute changes, for instance – comailing may not be right for you.)

As the industry moves more toward combining mailings, mailers should evaluate the opportunity to see if it can work for them. For more information on comailing, DMM sections 340 and 707 outline the standards for Standard Mail and Periodical comailing, respectively. Recentemente, obtive, joguei e terminei um dos jogos da franquia Star Wars mais esperados dos últimos anos. Produzido, como de costume, pela LucasArts (pertencente ao grupo da Lucasfilms e, por extensão final, ao Papai Papudo George Lucas) e lançado em setembro de 2008, The Force Unleashed causou um certo furor por alguns certos motivos. O game chegou para o PC com seu conteúdo expandido, intitulado Star Wars: The Force Unleashed: Ultimate Sith Edition apenas em novembro de 2009.

Parte do frisson supramencionado vem do dito revolucionário engine do jogo. Aliado ao Havok, que relaciona peso e integridade dos objetos, tem-se o sistema Euphoria, responsável pela reação dos personagens não-jogadores ao serem arremessados, eletrocutados ou o que seja, e também o sistema DMM (sigla para Digital Molecular Matter), que simula o material do qual são feitos os objetos e como reagem a ações contra eles. Por exemplo, um vidro estilhaça como um vidro, e um metal amassa como metal, com a aplicação da mesma força sobre eles. Desenvolvido pela empresa Pixelux, o sistema DMM já está sendo adotado por uma infinidade de jogos eletrônicos.

Com essa engine curiosa e inovadora, o mote do jogo entra no cenário: teoricamente, seria “a Força como nunca se viu antes” ou coisa do gênero; correlativo, evidentemente, ao próprio nome, The Force Unleashed, “A Força Livre” ou, mais literalmente, “Livre de Grilhões”. Só isso já atraiu os olhos sedentos de uma legião de gamers ao redor do globo, que queriam ver a “Força com força total”, com cenários e personagens reagindo à dita cuja. Enfim, para atrair os fãs de Star Wars houve o toque final: o enredo do jogo é canônico de acordo com George Lucas, e vale para a história da Saga.

O jogo tem como aspecto principal uma aventura em terceira pessoa, situada entre os episódios III (A Vingança dos Sith – o final da nova trilogia) e IV (Uma Nova Esperança – o começo da trilogia clássica). Você assume o controle de Starkiller, o aprendiz secreto de Darth Vader e assassino/espião sith do Império. Após uma missão de caça a um Jedi em Kashyyyk, Lorde Vader encontra um Starkiller ainda pequeno – filho do Jedi que acabou de eliminar – mas sente a Força poderosa nele, e o toma sob sua tutela. Crescido e treinado para usar o Lado Negro, Starkiller torna-se parte de uma conspiração que envolverá o Imperador em pessoa e a formação concreta da Aliança Rebelde.

Tecnicamente, o game marca presença por exuberância gráfica. A recriação de personagens e os cenários que acabam mesclando estéticas de ambas trilogias cinematográficas são de deixar boquiaberto qualquer bom apreciador da arte de se fazer jogos, e com certeza contribuem para o feeling de Star Wars que todo bom jogo da franquia deveria ter. O personagem principal muda de roupa a cada missão, e todas elas tem uma aparência interessante, que também mistura aspectos novos e velhos. A ambientação e imersão são auxiliadas por efeitos sonoros excelentes e uma trilha sonora incrível, que sempre remete aos temas clássicos que todos conhecem.

O uso dos poderes da Força, para um videogame, é bastante fascinante. E graças aos engines utilizados na programação, eles sozinhos já proporcionam um espetáculo visual. Contudo, o jogo peca com uma dificuldade irregular e com uma câmera que muitas vezes atrapalha a movimentação e jogabilidade, principalmente nas batalhas contra os chefes de fases. Durante o desenvolvimento da história existem alguns quebra-cabeças bastante fáceis de resolver, contudo, mesmo indo não muito além do “matar, pilhar e destruir”, ainda mais com uma razoável gama de poderes, o jogo é divertido e pode garantir algumas horas de distração.

Todavia, o problema entra nos termos do enredo (prepare-se, eu não vou controlar a exposição de spoilers). A história do game em si não é ruim – apesar de poder ter sido bem melhor – mas ela infere no cerne da trilogia clássica de Star Wars e acaba alterando, em muitas vezes para pior, alguns conceitos que tínhamos como certos. E, mesmo sendo Universo Expandido, o fato de ser legitimado pelo próprio George Lucas nos obriga, em tese, a rever uma porção de coisas a respeito da amada saga. Coisas que, muitas vezes, é melhor que se deixem intocadas. E os probleminhas de desenvolvimento vão todos remeter a isso: ao fato da história agora ser canônica e que algumas coisas não devem ser alteradas.

Para começo de conversa, o personagem principal, Starkiller, é excessivamente poderoso. Mesmo. Seu domínio da Força é tão grande e absoluto que ele mescla combos de sabre-de-luz com telecinésia e consegue “carregar” a lâmina luminosa com a “eletricidade da Força”. Ele também é capaz de destruir cenários inteiros com um simples empurrão em todas as direções, amassar AT-STs como se fossem isopor, arremessar Tie Fighters como bolinhas de tênis e até mesmo derrubar um Imperial Star Destroyer usando apenas a Força. Mesmo outros jogos da franquia Star Wars, como Jedi Knight, Jedi Outcast e Jedi Academy, que tinham claras demonstrações do uso da Força, não foram tão exagerados.

Evidentemente, como eu disse ali em cima, em um jogo isso funciona. Bem demais, até. Essa sensação de poder dificilmente ficaria chata enquanto jogamos. Mas o problema começa ao colidir com a Força como nós a víamos antes. Em momento algum vemos qualquer personagem fazer algo minimamente parecido com as façanhas de Starkiller. Nem representantes que sabemos ter um conhecimento e domínio da Força ridiculamente alto; superior ao de Starkiller, inclusive, como Yoda, e ainda que o Lado Negro seja mais… “purpurinado”, nunca vimos o Imperador Palpatine atuar de tal forma, também.

Isso atrapalha na própria conceituação da Força. Ela deixa de ser algo místico e misterioso, que remete ao entendimento da vida e da morte e de algo intangível, uma filosofia e uma fé, e torna-se uma demonstração inconseqüente de superpoderes. Levamo-nos a questionar como é possível que os Jedi tenham sido exterminados por meros clones, quando na realidade são supersoldados capazes de feitos absolutamente sobre-humanos. É um exemplo da supremacia do Yoda piruletante com um sabre-de-luz à mão a um Yoda calmo, reflexivo e sábio. Culpa, em parte, de George Lucas e seus malditos midichlorians.

Ainda, o enredo do jogo introduz novas idéias à história que foram feitas de maneira descuidada. Ele credita a criação da Aliança Rebelde como uma manipulação do Império para tentar abater todos os seus inimigos de uma só vez. Apesar do conceito em si não ser de todo mal, a sua execução poderia ter sido melhor. A reunião de todos os futuros líderes da Aliança fica em cargo de um já conflituoso Starkiller, que numa rara interessante reviravolta do enredo e numa reversão ao lugar-comum, está “caindo para o Lado da Luz”.

Enganado por Vader e pelo Imperador, que capturam a futura liderança da Aliança – nomes como Mon Mothma, Bail Organa e a princesa Léia fulguram entre os coadjuvantes – o vingativo Starkiller persegue seus antigos mestres até a quase completa e em fase de testes Estrela da Morte (numa missão decepcionante, devo acrescentar). É ali que se tem o desafio final: salvar seus novos amiguinhos. Você confronta Vader e, após uma longa batalha, derruba – usando a Força, claro – uma infinidade de artefatos mecânicos da Estrela da Morte sobre o Lorde Sith.

Neste ponto, você pode escolher entre o final core, canônico e bonitinho ou o final motherfucker e alternativo. No final alternativo, você segue o confronto com Vader e o destrói. No CG que se segue, o Imperador o parabeniza e ordena que execute o Mestre Kota, um Jedi sobrevivente à Ordem 66 e que faz parte, segundo o jogo, da futura liderança da Aliança. Ao invés disso, Starkiller tenta atacar o Imperador, apenas para ser rechaçado e ter seu corpo quase inteiramente destruído. O CG segue com Starkiller sendo reerguido como uma espécie de “Vader 2.0 Diplomata Turbo”, e com o Imperador dizendo que agora você está sob seu comando, e quando o momento chegar, você será substituído. É com este Starkiller que você executa duas das missões adicionais que a Ultimate Sith Edition traz: Tatooine e Hoth (que são bem legais, até).

No final canônico você precisa enfrentar o Imperador em pessoa, e após uma batalha decepcionante (chefes de missões anteriores eram muito mais desafiadores), segue o CG do sacrifício de Starkiller para salvar Mon Mothma, Bail Organa e afins. Reclusos, eles decidem “continuar o que Starkiller começou” [!!!!], leia-se a Aliança Rebelde, e adotam como estandarte o símbolo heráldico da família do falecido.

Mesmo o enredo não sendo tão ruim assim – é até bacana creditar a formação da Aliança a um Jedi – acrescentar estas coisas na história acabam sendo um tiro no pé. Faria sentido Starkiller ser um personagem que ninguém conhecesse se ele continuasse como assassino sith e aprendiz secreto de Vader e morresse assassino sith e aprendiz secreto de Vader.

Contudo, a partir do momento em que ele exerce um papel tão fundamental na formação da Aliança Rebelde – ao ponto do símbolo de sua família ser o estandarte da coligação – entra o questionamento: por que nunca ninguém ouviu falar nesse cara? Temos aí um Jedi, um cara que cacetou o Vader, que tinha um domínio ridiculamente incomum sobre a Força e que foi o responsável pela formação da facção que derrubou o Império e restaurou a República Galática. Ele seria um grande herói para a Nova República e mereceria, no mínimo, uma nota de rodapé pelos seus feitos. Ele é o primeiro mártir da Aliança. E então, cadê ele?

No final das contas, The Force Unleashed é o domínio do estilo sobre o conteúdo, da demonstração da tecnologia sobre o enredo e sobre a falta de cuidado do Universo Expandido, e do próprio George Lucas, em acrescentar novas idéias à história dos filmes que começaram tudo em primeiro lugar. Um problema que ocorre muito mais freqüentemente após a nova trilogia – Episódios I, II e III – que demonstraram pouco cuidado do próprio criador da franquia em enriquecer a história. Como jogo, realmente, funciona, entretanto, exemplos como Dark Forces, jogo lançado em 1995, mostram claramente que é possível combinar boa jogabilidade com um enredo bem encaixado e interessante, sem destituir Star Wars de conceitos que a transformaram numa das mais bem-sucedidas franquias multimídia de todos os tempos.

The Climbing dictionary is now up and running, I will aim to update this  as often as I can. I think it is fairly definitive but will seek out any words not in there!

in Climber Magazine, DMM of Wales really have outdone themselves with this revolutionary piece of kit! The system just makes so much sense!!There is a small pulley on the load bearing edge of the ‘biner, this inevitably reduces rope drag significantly and therefore stress along the whole climbing system. Even considering the size and added pulley the wire gate version weighs just 63g so you don’t sacrifice weight, or even safety, the device manages to support 24kn, this is down to the expert DMM method of ‘hot forging’.

I love this piece of kit it really does make a difference; I managed to pick mine up dead cheap from here with free postage, well worth twenty quid!

Come 31st August 2009, my Diploma course in Marketing and Sales Management will commence its classes every Monday and Thursday in the evening for 3 hours at PSB Academy. It’s gonna be added stress for me, added work, added pressure, added responsibilities, and not forgetting lesser time for bowling.

The whole course will last for 18 months, packed with assignments, projects, and the ever dreadful examinations! Hahahahaa… I couldn’t say I’m mentally prepared, or physically prepared. But I will definitely do my best to at least complete and pass the whole course, and surely, getting good results will be a bonus! =)

This coming Thursday, I will be attending the course orientation at the same campus, and hopefully, I will be able to make some friends from the class. =) Good luck to me!!! Heh!

Oh, and on a side note, today’s Stanley’s birthday! Yeah! Happy Birthday dude! I hope you enjoyed the day, be it with your family or friends, and here wishing you many happy returns! Woooott!!! =)

According to the latest from the National Association of Realtors, if you lived in Cape Coral, Florida in 2006, there’s a chance your home was one of those “average” dwellings; worth in excess of $268,000 at the time.  That number still blew my mind researching for this blog, however, that’s what real estate was valued at the time.  That same home now?   I hope you’re sitting down.  Down to $84,000 and not levelled out yet; but close.  Of course this differs if it was a Condo or multi family but for the average home in that location, wow.

Still, green shoots have been increasing.  Take, for example, a home in Buffalo, NY in ‘06 worth $97,900 is now worth $115,400.  And yet another in Dallas-Ft. Worth, $149,500 in ‘06 was down to $138,000 by the end of ‘08 and now up once again to $150,700.  Yes, green shoots.

Without making this entry five pages long, I simply wanted to point out that not all is despair and nationwide foreclosure and mention two new ETFs which began trading the end of June which are based on the Case-Shiller Home Price Index.  UMM and DMM (Macroshares Major Metro Housing Shares) are 3x leveraged ETFs which will move according to changes in the index; or in other words based on home prices increasing or decreasing over an average of 10 major metropolitan cities. 

Find out more about the Case-Shiller Index above and the ETFs themselves with your broker but I urge you to take note that they are leveraged ETFs and 3x to boot.  Definitely not the type of investment vehicle you buy and put in a drawer for a long/hold; but if you’re a trader or investor that can interpret a chart and be nimble trading in/out of a security, these may be right up your alley as housing values, hopefully, continue their recovery.

me: “owh!!! [excited]  me and a few guys from this online guitar forum are going to have some sort of a ‘pedal party’ on Friday night.  we’re going to bring our own delay pedals and meet up – have a kind of a ‘delay pedal shootout’!  i’m looking forward to that!!”

assman: “owh, you mean one of those online forums?  like one of those Battlestar Galactica-ish, nerdy online bulletin board things?  but instead of spaceships, you guys discuss guitars?”

me: “err… yeah, well.  i suppose…?”

assman: “hmmm…  well, have fun at that Tupperware party of yours, mate.  i’m going home to my wife.”

don’t even ask me where we got the name for this particular shootout series from.  it was a case of one joke gone too far, and that was that.  the idea behind this concerted effort stemmed from the fact that ‘buying’, ‘trying’, ‘disliking’, ‘re-selling’, and ‘buying something else’ is a long, painful and expensive process when you’re out to hunt for the perfect gear.  so a dude that goes by the name of moderneagle on one of the local guitar forums i frequent said, ‘hey, i’ve got an extensive pedal collection and i bet some of you do too.  so why don’t we pool our resources together and hold a shootout for the benefit of others who want to know?’  and with that, born was the mocked Tupperware party in all its glory.

we decided on the monumental task of comparing (get this) analogue delays for our first assignment.  of course we could’ve gone with the easier option of testing overdrive/distortion pedals, but where’s the fun in that, eh?  the pedals tested were as follows:-

1. BOSS DM-2
2. BOSS DM-3
3. Analogman AR20DL
4. Maxon AD9 Pro
5. Maxon AD900 (dual MN3005 chip version)
6. MXR Carbon Copy
7. Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man (with Analogman mods)

EPIC FAIL #1:  no one had a video camera so more often than not, all 9 of us would be huddled in a circle in front of the amp, each with his own strong opinion on which pedal should be heralded as King of the Analogue Delays.  arguments sometimes got heated, albeit sweetened with the odd lame joke being thrown in to keep everyone’s cool.

the whole setup was a bit chaotic at first.  we didn’t have a set of parameters to test for.  we had no clue what we were doing.  the above is a shot of the Brokeboard, where we argued on technical aspects of delay characteristics such as signal decay and BBD chip noise.  ultraman_cosmo even showed me an alternative way of wiring a 3PDT switch to minimize popping.  after about 20 mins of this, we decided on a set of test parameters and went about with it.

i won’t go into the details of the outcome of each test.  but suffice to say that you can do a whole lot worse than the MXR Carbon Copy, considering it delivers righteous analogue delay tones at a price, size and availability that’ll put a smile on anyone’s face.

what i realised that night was this, though – it doesn’t matter who you are, what race, religion or colour.  it doesn’t even matter if you’re rich or poor.  each one of us who came that night didn’t share anything else in common, except for our love for great guitar gear.  heck, we didn’t even share the same taste in music (trust me, it’s hard to convince someone who plays a Les Paul that Strats are better).  but when we started talking about gear, it was as if everyone automatically assumed their designated role in an ensemble band.  and everyone was playing their role.  in tune, on time.

i’m blessed to have friends who write and play music, and i’m equally blessed to have friends who, even though i doubt knew my real name (other than calling me murg) for the better half of the night, were kind enough to let me be part of this circle of trust.  so this one’s for you, mateys!  may we have more Brokeback Pedal Shootouts in the days to come.

There are two new ETF sthat track the housing market of the major metros in the United States. The MacroShares Major Metro Housing Down Trust (NYSEArca: DMM) moves 3x inversely with average pricing of the Single Family homes and MacroShares Major Metro Housing Up Trust (NYSEArca: UMM) moves 3x in tandem with same prices.

This is a great way to invest in the housing market, hedge or double up.

Here is how they work :

 When MacroShares Major Metro Housing Up are created, an equal number of MacroShares Major Metro Housing Down are also created.  UMM funds are invested in the ‘Major Metro Housing Up Trust.’  DMM investor funds are invested in a separate ‘Major Metro Housing Down Trust’.

Both trusts enter into a settlement contract to pledge assets to one another over time, using a predetermined formula. The trusts feature a 3x leverage factor, such that the underlying value of each is intended to track three times the cumulative percentage change, upward or downward, in U.S. single family home prices, as measured by the S&P/Case-Shiller Composite-10 Home Price Index.

The products were developed by Karl Case and Robert Shiller. According to MacroShares, the trusts ‘provide investors with access to the housing asset class, allowing for leveraged investment in either the upward or downward movement of home prices with no issuer or counterparty credit risk.’

Our new standards for letter-size booklets and folded self-mailers will include only recommendations for folded self-mailers, rather than requirements. We will continue to work with the mailing industry to test folded self-mailer designs and further explore mailing options before finalizing these standards.

The required standards will detail our changes for booklets mailed at automation and machinable letter prices. We’ll use the DMM Advisory to let you know when the requirements for letter-size booklets and recommendations for folded self-mailers are available on Postal Explorer.
