Let’s be honest: we college girls do most of our drinking out of red plastic cups. It might get the job done (and it’s usually free), but it’s far from classy. And sometimes we all need to be a little classy.

If you’re looking to add some class to your weekly routine, consider having the girls over for some wine and cheese. And add a little something special with these adorable, unique and classy wine glass rings!

While they aren’t a necessary addition to a wine glass (because wine is the only necessary addition, am I right?), I really love the extra fun these rings bring to the table. They are super classy and elegant, and they definitely look as if you bought them at Pier 1.

Plus, you can put them on anything. Since I don’t drink, I hang mine on the handles of my coffee mugs, but you can also clip them to kitchen-cabinet handles, keychains . . . the list goes on.

Each ring takes about five minutes to make, and it will only cost you about $5 in supplies to make a bundle of ‘em.

Here’s What You Need:

• Thick jewelry wire
• Thin craft wire
• Pliers (to bend the thick wire)
• Collection of small, colorful beads
• Some bigger, prettier glass beads

Here’s What You Do:

• First, use the clipper on the pliers to cut off about 3” of the thick wire.

• Use the end of the pliers to bend one end of the piece into a tiny loop to keep the beads from sliding off.

• Start putting the beads on, forming a pattern or just loading on one solid color, filling the wire half way.

• Now it’s time to get a little flashy. Cut off about 2” of the thin craft wire, string it through a big decorative glass bead, swirl a small loop at one end (you’ll use that to thread onto the thick wire), and then go crazy swirling the rest of the thin wire around the bead to make it pretty. It can be loopy, zigzaggy – whatever you like.

• When you’re done with that, use the loop you made on the thin wire to thread the glass bead onto the thick wire.

• Finish it off by filling the rest of the wire with beads, then bend the end of the thick wire forward to fasten through the first loop you made, and twist the whole thing into a circle shape.

• Clip it onto your wine glass stem, and you’re ready to roll. Bust out that chardonnay!

On Sunday, my husband and I celebrated our three month wedding anniversary. I was going through pictures and thought I would share a very small piece of our journey.

We got engaged in October 2007 in the Green Mountains in Vermont on, what I thought was an innocent hike. I was truly surprised, especially when I was admiring the rushing waterfall and noticed it was oddly quite. I turned around and he was down on one knee!!

We have always dreamed of living a peaceful, organic, happy existence and in our hearts we knew that LI could not offer us the wide open spaces we yearned for. In August 2008, we fled the suburbs and relocated to State College, PA. Here is a short summary of what happened: We were driving through PA one day on our way back from Ohio after attending a family event. We took a small detour to explore Penn State and Happy Valley after a family member gave us a tip to visit the Penn State Creamery. So we did, we stopped for a drippy, delicious cream cone, and sat outside gazing at the gorgeous mountains and sprawling farms. It was settled! We could live here, we could start a life here! We planned and plotted for two months and then early one morning in August 2008, we packed up his Oldsmobile Allero and my Jeep Wrangler and hit the road not looking back (we gave our family two weeks notice, which was plenty of time to digest our plans, right?). We did not know a soul or a thing about our new town, but it was truly the most amazing thing we ever have done.
This is our first apartment together in a basement of what turned out to be a very nice neighborhood.
Aahh in May of 2009, this is where the fun began.. We bought our first house!! And we adopted our first pet on the same day as closing. We literally closed on the house and swung by PAWS in the Uhaul truck and picked up our little cat, Mayberry. We know know why she is crazy, she has parents that are a bit off the wall.

We affectionately call our house “the box of love”.

If that was not enough excitement for one lifetime, we decided it was time to get married and and wanted to do all the planning ourselfves (we gave our families three months this time). We figured, why not? We could pull it off! On August 22, 2009, we threw a country wedding in our backyard. It was completely DIY from the invitations to the side dishes, decorations, red velvet cupcakes, you name it we did it. That is a whole other story in itself. We had the guests document the day on disposable cameras in lieu of a photographer. It turns out the pictures came out far better than I could have imagined.

We will talk about the making of a seventeen by seven and a half inches paper towel dispenser made u

We will talk about the making of a seventeen by seven and a half inches paper towel dispenser made up of wood The choice of wood you use is up to you. You can give it any kind of artistic finish that you like. Use your imagination to give it the look that matches with the ambiance of your bathroom. We will only discuss the basics.

In this project white oak was utilized for the base and arms of the paper towel dispenser while the towel was made with the help spruce. For some unspecified reasons we have utilized white oak for the base and arms of the dispenser and spruce for the towel. You can buy all that you need from your local home improvement store or a related retailer.

At your next door home improvement center or building supply warehouse you will need to acqire several items before you can construct Remember to get the right kind of lumber for yourself. Depending on whether you will paint or varnish your project, choose a higher or lower quality of wood.

Before we go further, obtain 3 feet of 1×6, a one inch wooden dowel and enough 1 ½ inches wooden screws to last the project. Keep off from knots, twists or defects. If you foresee your paper towel holder to be painted then use a particle wood. They are more erect than conventional wood and never curve.

Once you have selected a suitable wood and you bring the materials home it’s time to start cutting. Set up a circular saw and a jig saw. Remember to abide by all the safety norms while using power tools. Place the material on a pair of sawhorses or work bench.

Measure and mark the 1×6 at 17 inches. Use the circular board to cut the wood at the mark Set this board aside for now. This will be the back of the wooden holder. you can set it aside. This marks the completion of the back of the wooden paper towel dispenser.

With the two pieces of 1×6 that you have, mark them at 5 and a half inches leaving you with two perfect squares. Don’t cut them just yet. Using a compass and pencil draw a 1 inch circle at the top left hand corner of each of the squares. Place a pencil mark at about at a distance of three quarters of an inch from each corner. You will now have the 1” hole that you will make with a compass at the centre. Use a 1 inch paddle bit to drill through the 1×6. Remember to round the edges using a compass. It might be easier to trace a round object such as a soda can or water bottle.

Cut the curved angles first with a jigsaw. After you have cut out the curves, it is time to cut the straight lines with the circular saw. You now have the two brackets for the holder.

Pre-drill two cavity each with a quarter inch drill bit 1 5/8 inches and at fifteen three by eight inches from the edges and ¾ inch from the top and bottom. Next pre-drill the 2 brackets three quarter inch from the bottom and top and centered on the three fourth width of the board.

Join the two brackets to the front of the seventeen inch board. Feel free to use glue to make the bond stronger.

Trim the dowel to 17 inches and smoothen the ends. It’s not a bad idea to smoothen the towel bar and brackets at this time. Clean any loose dust or glue with a wet cloth.

Attach the paper towel holder to the wall in your restroom with two large screws into the wall studs or use two toggle screws for drywall. All you need to do is slide in a roll of paper towel and your new wooden kitchen paper towel dispenser is ready.

The original article, written by appeared in the Edmonton Journal July 13, 2009 Sonja Myllymaki made

The original article, written by appeared in the Edmonton Journal July 13, 2009

Sonja Myllymaki made a major career change this summer, from letter carrier to full-time farmer. And she didn’t leave the city to do it.

She didn’t have land of her own, but she found a way around that, too. She found vacant lots, she rented allotments and contracted space in friends’ backyards.

Myllymaki is pioneering SPIN gardening–Small Plot Intensive agriculture–a business model started in Saskatoon a few years ago. Bringing small-scale commercial gardening into the city is the latest development in the local food movement that is rapidly gaining momentum and sending shoots out in all directions.

The “eat local” campaign championed by restaurant chefs a few years ago has ballooned into a polyglot of urban farmers, average families looking for healthy food, environmentalists, social activists, provincial economists and urban planners with a new definition of a sustainable city.

On this blustery day in late June, Myllymaki digs at the inevitable weeds among the tomatoes, peas, lettuce and beans, using a backyard drip hose to water the crop. She figures she’s got 700 to 800 square metres of land, less than a half a hectare, but SPIN doesn’t require vast tracts of land.

There’s no farming in her family background and Myllymaki herself has a university degree in modern dance and occasionally performs.

But she says she’s typical of the new urban farmer–30-something, female, part idealist and pragmatic. She’s interested in eating healthy and reducing her environmental footprint, and that led her to gardening a few years ago, and then into this new venture.

Like most farmers, Myllymaki puts in long days, and it’s been back-breaking work to break up the grassy lots, get rid of the weeds and restore the soil before she could get to planting. In the SPIN model, there’s minimal mechanization and lots of hands-on work. It employs organic methods– no pesticides or chemical sprays.

She’s planning to market her produce through a new, small distribution system called Locavoria, an online network of about 20 families who buy directly from two area farmers who post their produce and families make their orders.

SPIN farming is catching on in other cities.

South of the border, Detroit started to grow vegetables on vacant lots using SPIN techniques, and some estimate they can produce more than 10 per cent of local food needs.

Edmonton could do a lot, she says, and there’s plenty of vacant land in Edmonton, in backyards, boulevards, parks and schoolyards where you could plant fruit trees and put in gardens.

Like many food activists, Myllymaki came to the local food movement via the environmental movement and concerns about food security and food safety.

Cities take their supply of imported food for granted, she says, but in a time of high energy costs that might not be a safe assumption.

“We think we’re immune to peak oil, but the global food system will be the first to feel the shortage of oil,” she says.

If those long supply lines from California or Mexico are disrupted, far better that Edmonton has a robust local supply of food, she says.

Also, the drought is already causing big headaches for farmers just outside. Part of the problem is that large-scale, export-driven agriculture is more vulnerable to a lack of rain, she says.

In fact, Camrose county in mid-June declared a state of agriculture disaster as canola and hay fields withered under the lack of rain.

Small-scale SPIN operations can store water in the soil more easily and withstand hard times, she says.

But while many environmentalists retreat to the countryside for a purer life, she says, that’s not helping to build healthy urban spaces.

“That’s just leaving the mess. We need to stay and change the way cities work, to make them sustainable. There’s plenty of vacant land for growing and the city should lease land to young urban farmers.”

SPIN gardening got started in Saskatoon. Farmer Wally Satzewich discovered he could make more money growing greens and salad crops in the city than on his rural land, mainly because he could grow three crops in a summer.

Contrary to expectations, an urban location offers many advantages for growing food–a more controlled environment, fewer pests, more warm days and instant access to market. Edmonton, with 140 frost-free days, compared to 110 outside the city, and its excellent Class 1 soil, holds great possibilities.

According to advocates, most SPINners are first-time farmers, but it also appeals to established farmers who want to diversify or downsize, as well as by part-time hobby farmers.

Thanksgiving may be only a few days away but that doesn’t mean it’s too late to decorate in a special way. Use what you have on hand…or in the yard!

napkin

I love how simple this setting is. If you can’t find printed ribbon, make your own with a permanent marker on plain ribbon. I particularly love the simplicity of the leaf with a name written on it.

You can’t beat the aroma and simplicity of freshly cut rosemary. Add a coordinated ribbon for an extra touch.

An extra cake stand topped with fresh greenery and berries looks special when a simple candle is included.

As someone who grew up in the Pineywoods of East Texas, I like to include pinecones in my seasonal decor in the fall and winter.

pinecone ideas

A gold-sprayed mini pinecone is so sweet nestled among kumquats and boxwood twigs.

Cinnamon sticks and pinecones tied with textured ribbon would also make a great addition to a holiday table. (I really love the wire basket as well!).

Use what you have…just use it in a new way with a little bit of nature’s help.

…when the corkscrew breaks. I popped open a bottle earlier this evening. Didn’t have a bit of trouble with it, but it made me laugh and think about a struggle Carey and I had one evening. I had a waiter’s style corkscrew. Looked a bit like this:

I loved it until the silly thing broke, leaving the corkscrew firmly embedded in the cork and the handle dangling worthlessly in my hand. Didn’t love it so much after that. Glared at it, in fact, and thought evil things about its quality. I also tried a few things to get the bottle open – pliers and various other tools. What we ended up doing was digging out my framing hammer (those are pretty good sized hammers), propping it up on on a paint can and a couple of 2″x4″s to make it about the same height as the bottle, and hooking it to the corkscrew. There were a couple of little nubs on its end which had anchored it to its former handle that gave the hammer a little place to grip. I gave Carey the hammer, held the bottle down firmly, turned my face as far out of the way as I could, and told her, “Pull!” Frighteningly enough, it worked, and my face is just fine, thanks. Leverage is a beautiful thing.

OMG!
i can’t believe it’s alreday November 21st! How fast do days pass now that it’s dark at 5pm here? OMG! i do still remember 3 weeks ago when i turned the page of the calendar and put the one with november on it to the front.
How can this be true? Maybe i’m just dreaming and days are passing faster and faster, but no! it’s reality! it has got something to do with growing up or so. I think. Because i remember being a child and thinking that weeks passed very slow and now.. i do stil exactly remember last christmas and now christmas is around the corner. It’s unbelievable! ok ok no stress. you do still have to do lots and lots of presents and you don’t have enough time! haha
so.. what are you thinking of getting, making as a present to your beloved ones? I’m thinking of this.

since i dont have any money, yeah i’m a poor student who goes to an expensive university and i earn 10 euro per week giving some class to a little kid. as you can see i can barely do nothing with those euros. buuuut i can do this and i’m seriously thinking of starting to do it! it’s pretty
