Ignoră invizibilul pentru că nu-l poate observa, şi se ghidează numai după ce-i sare în ochi. Nu acceptă vechiul pentru că alimentele perimate miros urât. Copiilor săi le cumpără mitraliere de jucărie ca să se obişnuiască de mici cu prelungirea firească a braţelor oricărui om războinic. Se laudă că citeşte mult. Se consideră cult. Important. Îşi impune punctul de vedere logic, imbatabil. Este raţional. Nu vede dincolo de zidul conceptelor. Nu citeşte poveşti copiilor pentru că a fugit întreaga viaţă de copilărie. Perioada aia plină de fantezie prostească. Îi e ruşine să se prostească de faţă cu alţii. Numai copiii şi nebunii o fac. Are o atitudine de superioritate care îi aduce numai beneficii. Semenii lui îl respectă şi îşi doresc să ajungă ca el. Mulţi intră în competiţie cu el. Dar el, omul superior, îi devansează fără prea multe probleme. Se simte bine când învinge pentru că a umilit pe cineva. În sinea lui tremură de plăcere când umileşte. Astfel îşi dovedeşte superioritatea într-un mod Absolut. Mamma, non portarmi via la Nikon, perchè i colori sono così brillanti, e abbiamo visto estati così verdi. Mamma, guarda, uso la Kodachrome, e da quando c’è il bianco e nero non mi piace più. Simon frigna e piange, è disperato, perchè la mamma vuol portargli via la macchina fotografica,  e la pellicola. Oggi mamma Kodak fa lo stesso con noi, ma la nostalgia è puramente reazionaria, antiquata, una scomoda coda, per una volta.

Il 22 giugno 2009, Eastman Kodak Company ha annunciato che, quest’anno, verrà sospesa la vendita della pellicola a colori KODACHROME, diventata un marchio iconico nel campo della fotografia da 74 anni. Le vendite dei prodotti KODACHROME, dall’introduzione della prima pellicola a colori sul mercato mondiale nel 1935, sono diminuite notevolmente nel corso degli ultimi anni in seguito all’adozione di altre pellicole o al passaggio al digitale da parte dei fotografi. Oggi, KODACHROME rappresenta solo una frazione dell’1% delle vendite totali di Kodak nel settore delle pellicole fotografiche.

Nonostante le sue eccezionali funzioni, la pellicola KODACHROME richiede un processo di sviluppo altamente complesso che ha portato i fotografi a sperimentare e adottare altre pellicole KODAK più innovative, in grado di assicurare immagini a colori di elevata qualità tramite un flusso di lavoro più semplice.

Sebbene la pellicola KODACHROME offra caratteristiche distintive e prestazioni ineguabili da altri prodotti, gli attuali utenti sono incoraggiati a provare le altre pellicole Kodak. Recentemente, quali sono state le percentuali di vendita della pellicola KODACHROME?

KODACHROME rappresenta attualmente una frazione dell’1% delle vendite totali di Kodak nel settore delle pellicole. Sebbene KODACHROME rappresenti un marchio iconico utilizzato dai fotografi da ben 74 anni, oggi gli utenti hanno cambiato le loro abitudini e le vendite sono calate in modo significativo.

Questo è quanto. Intrufoliamoci tra le righe. Guardiamo la pellicola in contro luce. Cosa sta accadendo? Kurt Cobain, allora sviluppato in Kodachrome, se ne stava sulla copertina di Rolling Stones Usa con la sua bella maglietta “Corporate Magazines Still Suck“. Come a dire: la roba su scala industriale è il male, e dunque fa schifo. Le industrie aprono nuove produzioni. Diversificano. Creano metastasi. Si ramificano e avviluppano. Le industrie fanno cose, montano oggetti, plastificano bisogni e li consegnano all’immortalità.

Qualcuno è diverso. Qualcuno è migliore.

Procter&Gamble è il nuovo Sacro Romano Impero. Ha una struttura feudale e centralizzata allo stesso tempo. Fanno sapone, grassi da ingurgito. Producono saponi per pulire lo sporco che i loro cibi chimici lasciano incrostati sui piatti. Sono loro i prodotti chimici che ci mettiamo addosso per rimuovere l’olezzo del nostro corpo che espelle le tossine. E’ un business  semplice: in tutto l’occidente l’unica cosa a buon mercato, facilmente accessibile, e immediatamente consumabile sono i grassi e i loro composti. Non c’è molta differenza tra quelli negli snack e in quelli per insaponare le mani o quelli da rovesciare nel cesso, dopo.

E’ un mondo industriale collegato a doppio filo alla materialità delle cose che produce. E’ un mondo anni 50, in cui casalinghe dallo sguardo anfetaminico, sovraeccitato, invitano a comprare, comprare, comprare, in un sogno bulimico ed eiseneweriano dell’America che finanzia il proprio armamento atomico con la spesa per la casa. E’ un mondo conformista e chiuso, medioevale, basato sulla triade moglie-macchina-mestiere, consuma-produci-crepa, famiglia-patria-wallmart.

E’ un mondo direttamente collegato a quello di oggi. E’ un mondo generato dalla più grande vittoria militare della storia, è un mondo che sarà messo (parzialmente, momentaneamente, inutilmente) a ferro a fuoco dal proprio benessere, che consentirà, su scala industriale, di sviluppare bisogni altri rispetto a quelli basilari ed animaleschi grazie ai quali prosperava il mondo keynesiano ed atomico.

Mamma sa cucinare. Papà lavora in un ufficio. Vende tubi di ghisa o polizze di assicurazione. I negri imbustano la spesa nei supermercati. Impariamo a convivere con la bomba. Impariamo ad amarla. A scuola ci fanno vedere i cartoni. I cartoni spiegano che se domani scoppia una bomba all’idrogeno, è meglio accucciarsi dietro un muretto. Altrimenti si viene polverizzati. Le radiazioni provocano lesioni. Le lesioni non sono uniformi. Si  muore un pezzo alla volta. La signora Eisenower dice che Jack è molto caaarino, ma troooppo giovane per la Casa Bianca.

Le cose vanno bene. Conta i centesimi che diventano dollari. Conta i dollari. Dalle unità alle decine. Siamo la boom generation. Possiamo comprare oggetti. Qualcuno farà vinile per noi. Qualcuno ci darà una pellicola e una macchina fotografica per dare forma all’inverno del nostro scontento. La pellicola a colore farà arrivare l’estate. Bruceremo, in acido. Ci calmeremo e ci quieteremo. Chissà i nostri semi quando fioriranno. E’ il 1959, il 1962. E’ il 1967 e il 1969. E’ andato.

Qualcuno produce cibo di bassa qualità che ci spinge verso la trombosi e il cancro. Qualcuno produce pellicola per stampare le fotografie. La differenza tra bufalo e locomotiva, è che il bufalo può scartare di lato e cadere, mentre la locomotiva ha la strada segnata. Le Corporation del consumismo ancora producono come all’inizio. Hanno solo raffinato le esche e peggiorato la qualità. I bufali come la Kodak hanno scartato di lato e sono caduti, hanno cambiato e innovato. Hanno segnato le epoche e sono morti e cresciuti insieme a noi.

Rileggere le righe del comunicato. C’è qualcosa di diverso. E’ come se la Kodak stesse dicendo, tra le righe

Ora verrete da noi con la vostra melanconia. Vi mancheranno le pellicole ancient regime, maledirete il formato digitale, che è senza memoria, non è cool, non è vintage. Ci assalirete con i bastoni perchè abbiamo tradito. Abbiamo ceduto all’innovazione. Siamo stati, ci direte, poco filologici.

Vedete, cari ragazzi, noi siamo un’industria. Siamo sani, siamo svegli. Non produciamo snack. Produciamo pellicola. E’ tecnica, è arte, è pensiero. Ora, con questo cambiamento, perchè di cambiamento si parla, stiamo tutelando il nostro portafoglio. Ma potremmo farlo anche speculando sulla finanza del real estate.

No. Noi abbiamo una storia diversa. Facciamo soldi, sì. Tutti fanno i soldi. Noi li facciamo diversamente. La nostra produzione, i nostri prodotti, non possono essere separati da uno spirito simile a quello dei workshop rinascimentali. Noi forniamo gli strumenti all’arte, alla creatività, alla memoria e alla costruzione dell’immagine del mondo.

Non vi lamentate perchè ora stiamo cambiando. Guardate, vi stiamo indicando la strada. Stiamo imponendo lo standard del futuro. Vi siete fidati nel 1935. Dovreste farlo anche ora. Nessuno allora si strappò le vesti perchè il dagherrotipo era finito. Oggi vi suggeriamo di fare in un modo nuovo. Dovremmo sempre fare in un modo nuovo.

Se produci per un centinaio di anni stronzate, è una possibilità che tu crei un pubblico di stronzi, assuefatto alle cazzate. Se tu crei qualcosa, qualcosa che abbia un senso, un oggetto del fare, un oggetto che contenga know-how e cultura, che sia un opinel, è, dice il vecchio pastore, seduto davanti all’organo a canne, molto probabile che tu sia un buon protestante, e che la tua opera abbellisca il mondo, e renda grazia a Dio.

Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution

Questo brano è la settima traccia del disco Yield del 1998.

Il video musicale fu diretto da Kevin Altieri, conosciuto per la sua regia nella serie animata di Batman, e Todd McFarlane, conosciuto per il fumetto Spawn e il video dei Korn “Freak on a Leash”.

Il video inizia con l’evoluzione della vita, dalla cellula più piccola, all’estinzione dei dinosauri e il regno dell’uomo sapiens. Il video poi rallenta per narrare la storia dell’uomo, partendo dall’uomo primitivo, la natura violenta e i cambiamenti durante i secoli. Sono presenti anche altre tematiche, come la caccia alla balena, la vivisezione, l’inquinamento, alterazioni genetiche e (implicitamente) anche internet. Il video si conclude in quello che si ritiene essere uno scenario futuristico di auto-distruzione della razza umana, includendo un bombardamento a tappeto di un aereo futuristico, computer che dirottano le menti umane, e infine un’esplosione nucleare che lascia le città in rovina.

Il video sembra accollare la colpa della brutalità del genere umano ai leaders; con molte scene mostranti un cardinale o un prete, un presidente americano, un possibile leader del Soviet con una bandiera raffigurante un missile su uno sfondo rosso.
Qualsiasi cosa ritratta complementa la canzone e segue il significato delle parole. Per esempio, quando Eddie Vedder canta “Buying stocks on the day of the crash“, la scena mostra uomini d’affari che si suicidano saltando dagli edifici, come nel giovedì nero e nei risultanti suicidi dopo il crollo del mercato azionario di Wall Street nel 1929.

Senz’altro un video forte. Argomentazione vere, reali e molto toccanti. Purtroppo anche molto attuali.

Esse clipe é MUITO bom! É quase que uma aula de Sociologia em 4 minutos. Ele começa com big bang, dinossauros, homem das cavernas, depois tem Grécia, Roma, Revolução Francesa, Revolução Industrial, Ku Klux Klan, 1ª Guerra Mundial, Crise de 29, 2ª Guerra Mundial, enfim, toda a história do mundo num vídeo crítico, mostrando que, apesar de tudo, nada muda, enfim, tire suas conclusões.

There are reasons why some musicians are able to extend their careers decade after decade after decade. When I was a teenager I had a poster of Eddie Vedder on the ceiling directly over my bed, right next to a blue-tinted poster of a flannel wearing Jack Kerouac hitchhiking on a rural road; yes, I am old and I was a strange kid. Pearl Jam  is always just beneath my surface and will forever coerce a squeal out of me when it wafts into my car stereo during a flashback lunch; literally, I clap my hands and jump up and down in my seat like a giddy schoolgirl.  Socially conscious (if not a tad over-reaching and evangelical at times), loud without being bombastic, smooth without being suave, Pearl Jam’s music transcends age, epoch, and geography instantaneously; Pearl Jam is my past, present, and future all at the same time. It was Vedder who watched over me while I embarked on my writing career at the tender age of 13 with my first journal. It was Vedder who calmed my nerves when I drove to my first gig as a music critic. It will be Vedder who will inaugurate me into the next stage of my life, whatever the eff that brings.  And now they’re reissuing a seminal album, TEN, in a blatant grab for money (as are most of these things). *Sigh* Well, none of us are perfect, I suppose, and I took a vow when I was a tender young lass…for better or for worse, I am a Pearl Jam fan. Which is why I used this reissue as an excuse to scour Youtube for what began as a Top Five Pearl Jam Videos list, but couldn’t be constrained by numbers.

My all-time favorite Pearl Jam song is Yellow Ledbetter. This is what I term a “fan appreciation” video so its images aren’t anything special, but this is the version I prefer over anything live I’ve found so…

This video for Jeremy played incessantly during my formative MTV watching years, and credit should be given to these guys for discussing relevant issues in their music and packaging it artistically enough for MTV not to notice and flippantly feed it to thousands of unsuspecting kids…

Do the Evolution (1998) has amazingly descriptive visuals and is proof of two things: Pearl Jam was ahead of their time and a product of the greater Northwest.

Reconozco que éxitos como “Alive” o “Even flow” son excelentes, y no quiero desmerecer ningún trabajo suyo, pero su ritmo, en general… ni fu ni fa.

Por ello cuando escuché “Do the evolution” acompañada por las demoledoras imágenes del vídeo musical, sin el cual quizás el impacto no habría sido el mismo, habría jurado que no se trataba de Pearl Jam.

Otro grupo que se sale de su cauce para crear una pieza con un resultado genial, esta vez inseparable del escalofriante vídeo que ilustra su contundente mensaje.

Do you remember the days when you would set your VCR to record the latest episode of Rap City or made sure you were at your TV for the worldwide premier of the newest music video? Well, at Rhymin & Stealin, we sure do. And while we grew up during the golden age of music videos, we always had a soft spot for those of the animated variety. Over the years, their have been a bunch of excellent animated videos attached to incredible songs and we have taken the time to revisit this lost art in order to bring you the Top 10 Animated Music Videos of All-Time. Enjoy.

10) Tom Petty – Runnin’ Down a Dream

One of Tom Petty’s best songs is also one of TP’s best videos. Released in July of 1989 and directed by Jim Lenahan, this black and white video takes its visual style from the early 20th century comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland. This is a song that has aged incredibly well and the video is no exception. Compared to some of the other music videos that came out in 1989, this one is a gem. And as a bonus, Tom Petty looks far less goofy in animated form.

9) Aesop Rock – None Shall Pass

This is the title track off Aesop Rock’s 2007 album and it was directed by San Francisco’s Ordinary Kids. It features the artwork of long-time Aesop collaborator Jeremy Fish (who also did all the album artwork). The two have collaborated on many projects since 2005, and we featured one of them a couple months back. Such a unique song needed a unique video, and Jeremy Fish never disappoints.

Radiohead – Paranoid Android

Radiohead are always on the cutting edge of everything, so it’s not a surprise that their foray into animated videos is so great. Released in 1997 and directed by Magnus Carlsson, this video really hits a high note for me around the 4:40 mark, when the fat man goes to town on a lamppost only to chop himself up and sink to the ocean where he is saved by two mermaids who leave him bundled in a tree. I wonder if any drugs were consumed in the storyboard process of this video’s creation?

7) Dire Straits – Money for Nothing

This is one of the first music videos I can remember watching and it was one of the biggest videos of the ’80s, no doubt helping to propel the music video as another medium for artists to connect with fans. Directed by Steve Barron, this video was released on July 1, 1985 and went on to win numerous accolades, including Video of the Year. It was also the first video aired when MTV Europe launched in 1987. Mark Knopfler didn’t want the video to feature computer animation but he was persuaded by Steve Barron and MTV, who said they loved the song but wouldn’t play it if the video was just Dire Straits playing live. Good call.

6) Gorillaz – Clint Eastwood

Any video with zombie apes dancing like Michael Jackson in “Thriller” is fine by me. Since the Gorillaz are a “virtual band”, they pretty much have to animate all of their videos, but this was their first (and best) attempt. Released in early 2001, this video propelled the Gorillaz to massive acclaim and sales and helped them sell 7 million copies of their first album. This particular song features Del tha Funkee Homosapien, who had worked with Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn previously on Del’s classic Deltron 3030 album and which heavily influenced the Gorillaz style.

5) Beastie Boys – Shadrach

The Beastie’s abstract impressionist version of Shadrach was released in 1989 and directed by none other than Nathanial Hörnblowér (aka MCA). The video is set to a live version of Shadrach, which was originally released on Paul’s Boutique. Each frame of this video was painted by hand and its immense creativity makes it a perfect companion to an album as revolutionary as Paul’s Boutique. The Beastie Boys are the kings of great music videos, and this might be the best of them all.

4) Röyksopp – Remind Me

Everyone’s favourite Norwegian electronic duo have a few videos that qualified for this list, but “Remind Me” is the cream of the crop. Presented as a day in the life of an average London female from the perspective of an educational brochure, this gem won the 2003 MTV Europe Video Award for Best Video. It was created by French firm H5 and benefits from having a damn catchy song to accompany it. Although I’m not going to lie, the first time I heard the song was in this Geico commercial.

3) Michael Jackson – Leave Me Alone

This is one of MJ’s hidden gems and is often overlooked when people talk of the Gloved Ones hits. Bad was an awesome album and this was the eighth single. It was only included on the CD version but the video made it another hit. It was one of MJ’s first F.U.’s to the media and the tabloid imagery resonates even more when you watch it today. Highlights include Jacko dancing with the Elephant Man, the wacky Elizabeth Taylor museum and Giant Jacko busting out of the Amusement Park at the end. This video was directed by Jim Blashfield and won the Best Video Grammy in 1990.

2) Pearl Jam – Do the Evolution

When this video came out in 1998, Pearl Jam hadn’t made a video since the award-winning “Jeremy“, successfully avoiding their fear of becoming known more for their videos than music. They got back into the game with Spawn creator Todd MacFarlane directing, and the resulting collaboration took over 16 weeks of production and the work of over 100 artists. When Pearl Jam released the video they stated:

As artists we are challenged to expand the meaning of our work and by utilizing this visual medium and working with a visionary like Todd, we were able to further explore some of the themes we depicted in the song “Do the Evolution”. Basically we’ve tried to make a good stoner video.

Mission accomplished. The video explores themes such as evolution, the Holocaust, the Crusades, the Great Depression, pollution and nuclear armageddon. It was nominated for a Best Video Grammy in 1999 and is a true showcase of the animated genre.

1) A-ha – Take on Me

This was actually the second video for this song and I’m sure they are glad they did it, because it won six MTV Music Video Awards in 1986. It remains one of the most iconic music videos of all-time and was extremely influential in heping MTV in its huge rise to prominence. It was directed by Steve Barron (who also directed video #7 on this list) and features pencil-sketching over live movement to create the animated effect. You pretty much can’t even talk about great music videos without mentioning this one. And it also gave us this hilarious clip.

Pra quem não sabe a música Jeremy é baseada em fatos reais, onde o colegial Jeremy Wade Delle, de 16 anos entra na sala de aula portando uma Magnum calibre 357, olha para a professora e diz “Professora, eu peguei o que eu realmente queria pegar!”, assim coloca a arma em sua boca e dispara em frente de todos! A música do Pearl Jam não está ai para mostrar o suicídio, mais sim para mostrar que a coragem e a força esta em quem sobrevive e ajuda o mundo mudar!

Un dinosauro caccia e uccide prede, e sullo sfondo una meteora che devasta il mondo. Una scimmia uccisa da un’altra scimmia uccisa da un uomo ucciso da un altro uomo. L’evoluzione. Un uomo scrive al computer, che si ribella e lo attacca e lo annienta, legandolo a sé con i propri fili: il computer si nutre dell’uomo, di tanti uomini. Tutti dentro a piccole cabine, strette e claustrofobiche, in un mondo comandato dalle macchine. L’evoluzione. Nascono bambini sfornati da una donna meccanica, tutti timbrati con un codice a barre sulla fronte. E i medici osservano, compiaciuti e soddisfatti. Tutti uguali. L’evoluzione. Un uomo viscido e ubriaco si eccita con delle immagini virtuali. Una ragazzina piange, seduta, con un uomo che la sovrasta con tanto di cintura legata alla mano.

Le immagini scorrono via più veloci, mentre Eddie continua a urlare come un ossesso, sempre di più, sempre più forte. Come le immagini, come la musica che latra, cattiva, insieme alla voce. Lombrichi di ferro giganti divorano tutto ciò che incontrano, anche i loro simili. E distruggono ogni cosa. Immagini veloci e confuse, una dietro l’altra. Un cartello con su scritto Yield viene colpito da un proiettile. L’evoluzione.
Bombardamenti a tappeto. Distruzione totale. È l’evoluzione, baby. Fai l’evoluzione. La faccia della moretta. Il suo occhio, rosso del fuoco della devastazione. È la terra, morta. No. È una cellula.

A few days ago, a friend of a friend — maybe even a friend — mentioned that people are easily amused these days. I can see their point.

Pop-rock recording artist Avril Lavigne may never sell 126 million albums. Hell, she may never sell 126 of anything. And yet somehow, her YouTube video for her song, “Girlfriend,” has more than 126 million hits. And if you’re wondering whether this is the most views of any video ever, this list will challenge your notion of what people are interested in.

"She's like, 'So, whatever!' I'm like, 'Literate? Never!'"

I am quick to mock pop culture, and as a largely democratic form of entertainment, it is easy. (Where else can popularity determine careers in Hollywood, lifestyles of artists — from music to painters — and YouTube sensations?) Many countries can bask in the leisure of their non-hectic lives, watching television while surfing the Internet and eating a Hot Pocket (or foreign equivalent) while having a hand-held device perform sexual acts on their genitals. It’s as if Bill Gates, Jesus, Dane Cook and a unicorn had an epic tickle fight in a rainbow storm.

So we have a lot of time on our hands to watch poor-resolution videos and enjoy other leisure forms of questionable merit. So what? What’s the big deal? If you stop and think about it, this is human progress. In the grand scheme of things, it is very harmless compared to our past entertainment: burnings, lynchings and straight-up murder.

Before you vomit from the imagery, this is a good thing. For the most part, people in first- and second-world societies no longer have to worry about life and death on a daily basis. People can go to concerts, play volleyball and ogle women in strip clubs instead of fighting plague-like diseases, horrible elements and dinosaurs. And that energy once used to out-sprint Native Americans is now used to pound out poorly-spelled diatribes on the Internet because someone dissed their favorite band. Progress!

Pearl Jam saw the future of human amusement in their stellar music video (and great song), “Do the Evolution”:

While Average Joes may not be strapping on the virtual reality/3D goggles yet, plugging in for their amusement is definitely a present form of fun — way safer and less exerting than stoning people. And as long as people are amused by a music video instead of being under or raining down harm, it’s all good.

It’s hard to believe that Backspacer is Pearl Jam’s 9^th album.  Even weirder is that they’ve been in the cultural consciousness for 18 years.  7 more years and they’ll be eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. All of these things show their age, unlike the new album.  Critics are all repeating the same mantra: that this is their punkiest album yet. And they are mostly right (although I would argue that Vitalogy is up there as well).  They also are pointing out the brevity: at 36 minutes it is obvious on first listen that this is an album trimmed of all fat. I’m sure there are some great songs that didn’t make the cut, but the album is stronger as a result.  Short and punchy and to the point.

I am not sure why I continue to allow myself to get annoyed with some of the reviews in Rolling Stone.  Rob Sheffield wrote the review for Backspacer, and it’s a good review, with one major exception (It should be noted that Rob Sheffield was incapable for writing about a band for a few years without “cleverly” using some of their lyrics in an ironic (ie-stupid/lazy/boring) way. Case in point: Pearl Jam are still alive; Eddie Vedder’s thoughts arrive like butterflies; The band’s albums have all been washed in black, tattooed everything, etc…no, Rob, you cannot use those). Anyway, Mr. Sheffield’s major offense in the review was calling “Spin the Black Circle” off of Vitalogy filler. He claims that people were usually skipping those kind of songs to get to the latest torch song by the band.  While they very well may have skipped said songs, they were hardly filler.  I didn’t have the chance to see Pearl Jam on their tours for Ten or Vs, but I’ve seen enough footage to know they were a very kinetic live band, and that frenzy did show up on the recordings.  Their punky side showed up in songs like “Porch”, “Blood”, “Whipping”, “Brain of J”, “Do the Evolution”, etc.  None of these songs would be what Pearl Jam fans consider “filler”.  Stale references to lyrics and pop culture are a better definition, I think.

But I am not writing to slag on Rob Sheffield (I actually enjoy some of his writing, when he’s not trying to be too cute). I’m writing to celebrate Pearl Jam, and their longevity.  As I write this, I’m listening to the first of 2 concert downloads that came free with the purchase of the new album. It’s touches like this that really make Pearl Jam seem for the fans, by the fans. It’s well documented that Eddie Vedder pretty much had an obsession with The Who while he was growing up.  He has gone to great lengths over the years to prove he is just a fan like the rest of us. I’ll do without quoting a particularly curt line from “Satan’s Bed” off of Vitalogy that proves this. Instead, I’ll mention that on the new album there are a couple of songs where he mentions just being a human being. And after all these years, it seems to me that he and his bandmates have won the benefit of the doubt. No, they aren’t as big as they used to be. But just like Elton John in probably the most flamboyant video of the 80’s, they are still standing after all this time.  See, now I’ve fallen into the Sheffield trap. At least I dragged another artist into it, though.

   I am not an artist. I can’t really say that I have ever created anything important or beautiful, but for the past 2 years now I have begun the creation of something that has become larger than myself. You may ask yourself, what could it be? A painting? A book? A film? Nay, it is a playlist. A playlist of songs specifically selected for their relevance and fun-inducing-sensation in zombie combat situations.  They can be anything that either relates to zombies or simply pumps you up in a battle with the living dead.

What’s the use of this playlist? Well, it is a lot of fun to blast through some speakers while playing any number of zombie related video games. Of course it would also be heaps of fun if the world were to actually fall to the control of the undead.

I don’t really remember exactly where the idea came from. I do know, however, that its early stages were inspired by the movie Shaun of the Dead. One memorable scene in the movies depicts the heroes in a pub, about to be swarmed by the undead outside. Suddenly the jukebox starts blaring “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. It’s a funny scene so if you haven’t seen the movie do yourself a big zombie related favor and check out this video.

I think that I was also inspired by a fun game on a website that I frequent. I like to call it the zombie 4 but in truth the practice has no official name.

Basically, someone starts a thread setting up the following hypothetical situation: It’s the zombie apocalypse. You are the last human left on earth and you decide to go out in style, taking as many undead as you can with you. Pick the circumstances of you final stand.

It’s a fun game. If it’s true that you can get to know someone by shaking their hand, I imagine this would be the dialogue equivalent of exploratory surgery.

Mucha sorpresa me ha causado la noticia de que Warner Bros. está planeando ya el remake de la cinta clásica estelarizada por Judy Garland “El mago de Oz”, en la que se cuenta la historia de Dorothy (o Dorita como le llamaban en español a la caricatura) que, junto con sus amigos el león, el hombre de hojalata y el espantapájaros, tenía que encontrar al dichoso mago para poder regresar a casa sana y salva.

La sorpresa en sí no es que alguien tome el riesgo de rehacer la película, sino quién será el encargado de dirigirla. Hablo nada más y nada menos que de Todd McFarlane, que si el nombre no les suena, no se preocupen, Oz sería su ópera prima. Para mayores referencias, les puedo decir que él es artista gráfico y su obra cumbre es un cómic llamado “Spawn”, del que también hay película e incluso ya se prepara la segunda parte. Además, dirigió un video de Pearl Jam llamado “Do the evolution”, que a mi juicio y de muchos críticos, es uno de los 10 mejores videos musicales en la historia.

McFarlane quiere darle a Oz un toque burtoniano gótico, y entre otras curiosidades, ubicará la historia en la época actual… ¿cómo? No tengo idea, pero no puedo esperar a ver qué locura le queda en pantalla. Si le sale bien, no dudaría que fuera el heredero del legado cinematográfico que ya construye Frank Miller.

La protagonista será la dos veces ganadora del Critic’s choice award, Dakota Fanning y el estreno está planeado para los primeros meses del 2011.
